Where to Find Doraemon in English
Without a doubt, one of the main reasons that Doraemon is generally unknown in the English-speaking world is that most of the franchise is not widely available in English. However, English versions of some Doraemon media do exist, and in this post I will review how to obtain several of them. The “core components” of the franchise considered here are the original manga (1969–1996), the classic anime series (1979–2005), and the rebooted anime series (2005–present).
A selection of Doraemon manga chapters have been translated into English as a 10-volume series. These volumes were released as educational material to help Japanese speakers learn English, so they also include the original Japanese text printed above the manga panels. All the volumes in the series can be ordered from Japanese Amazon, which does ship internationally, at least to many places.
Tumblr media
A second English series of selected manga chapters has been released in a similar format, though this time as six volumes and organized by specific themes. The stories compiled in this series do not overlap with those in the previous one, so both can be read without encountering any duplicate chapters. These volumes can also be ordered from Japanese Amazon.
Tumblr media
An even greater range of manga chapters has actually been localized into English... however, these are only available on Kindle in the United States and Canada.
Tumblr media
An English dub of the 2005 anime series aired in the USA between 2014–2015, covering 95 individual stories (52 half-hour episodes). It has not been officially released on home media or streaming services, but can be found archived online. From what little I’ve seen, the dubbing itself appears to be reasonably well done, though it should be noted that this dub contains numerous edits meant to "Americanize" the content, so it is quite heavily modified from the Japanese original.
Tumblr media
A different English dub of the 2005 series aired in the UK between 2015–2016. It includes some episodes that were not adapted for the American dub (and vice versa). However, it has not been released on home media either and many of the episodes are currently lost, which I find surprising given how recently it was on air. In fact, the complete list of episodes it includes is apparently unconfirmed, though it has been inferred that it most likely consists of the first 26 episodes from the Japanese version. In any case, surviving episodes from this dub have been archived online. I also haven’t watched much of it, but the voices seem fine and it contains far fewer edits to the original material compared to the US dub. As far as official Doraemon English dubs with accessible full episodes go, this one is probably the most faithful to the Japanese version. (It even dubbed the theme song!)
Tumblr media
Two movies, Stand by Me Doraemon and Stand by Me Doraemon 2, are currently on at least American and British Netflix with English dubbing (featuring the voice cast from the US English dub) and subtitling available. I’m not the biggest fan of these films (especially the first one) and don’t recommend them as an entry point into the franchise, though plenty of Doraemon fans would probably disagree with me on that point.
Tumblr media
Despite the relative obscurity of Doraemon in most of the Anglosphere, there is actually a long and complex history of Doraemon English media beyond what I’ve described above. If you’re interested in learning more, here is a detailed video series on that subject!
As for unofficial translations, all I’ll say is that fanmade English subtitles of variable quality exist for the remaining Doraemon movies (excepting this year’s movie that, as of the time of writing, was just released in Japanese theaters) and some episodes of both the 1979 and 2005 series. There are even fanmade English dubs of a few episodes out there. However, numerous episodes (especially from the 1979 series) remain unavailable in English in any capacity. Maybe one day...

just when i thought stand by me and the reboot were changing things up for no reason...
i find out it's the 1979 anime who did and those two are actually coherent with the manga.
☆ adult suneo's appearance
if you've watched stand by me you were probably wondering why they made suneo's hair like that, because no one saw that coming and it really seems so out of the blue, right? especially after seeing him look completely different in the anime.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
stand by me doraemon 2 (2020), nobita's the night before a wedding (1999)
well, technically, it would be more correct to represent adult suneo with curly hair, as that's how he appears in the manga (aka the original work).
Tumblr media
nobita's wedding eve (1969, unsure about it though)
☆ suneki or sunetaro?
i think my preference for the 1979 is pretty obvious at this point. in fact, i thought suneo's son was actually named suneki because that's how they refer to him in mini-dora sos!!!, so when i watched the 2005 anime episode where nobita goes to the future and i heard "sunetarō" i rolled my eyes thinking "why would they change his name for no reason?". well turns out sunetarō is how he's named in the manga.
Tumblr media
doraemon in-depth guide (2006)
while in the 2005 anime it's confirmed that he has a son named sunetarō, here you can see a question mark next to his name. personally, i prefer the name suneki!

¿Is Doraemon a good first step into manga and series?
In my last post I said that I wasn't aware of manga and anime, it turns out that I was really into it, I just didn't know that the shows I liked in my childhood belonged to this genre.
When I was about 3 to 5 years old, I used to watch TV with my brother, since I was too young, my brother was the one who chose the channel. As expected, he always chose war and action shows. And so we both ended up watching Doraemon, Sailor Moon and The Knights of the Zodiac on Chilevisión. Also, thanks to my brother, I ended up loving Doraemon, Transformers and Pokemon (I'm not sure if the last two were on the same channel, though).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doraemon#/media/File:Doraemon_volume_1_cover.jpg
So, Doraemon (ドラえもん) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Fujiko F. Fujio. The manga was first serialized in December 1969. And it was released in Chile from the year 2000 to 2004 through Chilevisión channel, and especially during the broadcast of the program "El Club de los Tigritos".
fun fact: Doraemon's magic number is 1293. Because he can run 129.3km/h when scared. He can jump 129.3cm too. He has maximum power of 129.3hp and his birthday is September 3, 2112 (12/9/3)..
¿Is Doraemon my recommendation for someone who doesn't really know or like manga? Yes, it is.
Unlike the other shows I mentioned (which are also suitable for children), Doraemon has no fighting, death or blood scenes (I don't think this is a bad thing, but it makes it even more family friendly).
Nobita is a ten-year-old Japanese school boy, who is kind-hearted and honest, but also lazy, unlucky, weak, gets bad grades and is bad at sports. One day, a robot cat from the 22nd century named Doraemon is sent back to the past by Nobita's future grandchild, Sewashi Nobi, to take care of Nobita so that his descendants can have a better life. Doraemon has a four-dimensional pouch in which he stores tools, inventions, and gadgets from the future to aid Nobita whenever he is faced with a problem. (Although Doraemon is a cat robot, he has a fear of mice because of an incident where robotic mice chewed off his ears. This is why Doraemon lost his original yellow color and turned blue, from sadness).
All this makes you identify with Nobita (except for the part of the magic cat), but what I remember most is his mother yelling at him for not leaving his shoes at the door, the funny fights with his friends, and his secret love for one of his friends.
In conclusion, I would encourage everyone to watch Doraemon because it is an accurate story, makes you empathize with the character and teaches you to always choose empathy, kindness and good acting. Also, the animation, music, and dialog make it a show you can't miss.

Gian and Suneo often bully Nobita, but are also shown as Nobita's friends in certain episodes, and especially in the movies. Doraemon has a four-dimensional pouch in which he stores unexpected gadgets he uses to aid Nobita. Most stories of Doraemon revolve the young Nobita Nobi, who receives poor grades and is frequently bullied by his two classmates, Takeshi Goda (nicknamed "Gian") and Suneo Honekawa (Gian's sidekick). At present, Nobita is a man who always fails in class, and whose company goes bankrupt, causing his family and sons to face financial difficulties. Can someone tell me why does nobody talks about Doraemon? I mean yeah it's an old cartoon for kids but it's The Fairly OddParents level dark and NO ONE TALKS ABOUT IT?! Like there is this TEN YEARS OLD protagonist with signs of dyslexia (not being able to read or write properly, hating books but loving comics, always getting bad grades, being bad at catching or throwing things, etc.) AND depression (he takes a nap at any chance he gets and spends most of the day sleeping which is a BIG sign of depression) AND STILL NO ONE ON THE INTERNET GIVES A SHIT?! WAS IT NOT AS POPULAR IN AMERICA OR EUROPE? DID IT NOT EVEN AIR IN DISNEY? Doraemon is a Japanese manga/ cartoon series about a 10-year-old kid named Nobita. He is a "bad student". He always gets a zero in every lesson and hides the exams so his mom won't see it (do I even need to say this never works?). His grand-grand-grand-grand-grandson Sewashi (He is from 2112) sends Doraemon (a robot that looks like everything BUT a cat) back in time to help Nobita have a better future. Doraemon has an interdimensional pocket in each episode he pulls out a different gadget from the future to help Nobita (Which mostly leads out to bigger problems or doesn't help at all).
Introducing Every Character With 1 Sentence Go!
Nobita: A "lazy" student who fails at everything he tries. Doraemon: "Future gadgets can't solve all your problems!" he says as he hands over the future gadget that solves every problem. Sewashi: "You fucked up so bad we're still trying to pay your debts 100 years later" Shizuka: The love interest. Gian: "Tell me your honest opinion" = I'mma kill you if you have a bad opinion. Jaiko: Gian's sister. Suneo: The rich kid. Dekisugi: The golden child the show only brings up to compare to Nobita. Dorami: The spare Doraemon. Tamako: Nobita's mom( a.k.a.: YOU GOT A 0?! AGAIN?!) Nobisuke: Nobita's dad Mr. S: The teacher. Anyway I was planning to talk about how messed up the show is but Then I got curious and looked up how many episodes it had, I found out that it started off as a manga. I made a little reshaerch and learned that 16 days ago (5 March 2021) it was the 51st anniversary of the manga's start. AND THEN I FOUND OUT IT WAS STILL GOING ON! There is a total of 200 volumes of the manga right now. (I may be wrong 'cause the google reaserch was a mess) So this big mess has; 200 volumes of manga, about 2000 episodes and 54 movies! The first manga's release year: 1969 The first episode's release year: 1979 The first movie release year: 1980 (Nobita's dinosaur) I'm not sure if they ended or not. Everything I said might be wrong, I don't know what's going on every article and Wikipedia page says something else. I SPEND 3 HOURS SEARCHING ABOUT THIS MESS AND I STILL HAVE NO IDEA WHAT'S GOING ON I'm gonna try and rewatch it asap.

Doraemon Vol. 1 from The Complete Works of Fujiko F. Fujio
Planning to go through the complete collection of Doraemon manga, so I’ll drop some of my impressions here. These won’t be reviews per se, more haphazard musings and observations.
Tumblr media
Although the Doraemon manga has been compiled into multiple print series, The Complete Works of Fujiko F. Fujio is the only one that reprints all of the original stories. The series is organized in an unusual way, intended to replicate the experience of an elementary school student reading the magazines that the manga was originally published in. For example, a Japanese student who started elementary school in 1969 would have read the Shogaku Ichinensei magazine for first graders during that year, then gone on to Shogaku Ninensei for second graders in 1970, and so on. The Doraemon stories in volumes 1–17 of this series are arranged in the sequence that students who began going to school in a particular year would have read them in. Volumes 18–20 compile additional stories that were printed in magazines other than the grade-based titles published by Shogakukan. As a result, the series does not follow a strict chronological order, with stories released during the same year scattered across multiple volumes. Nonetheless, the stories collected in volume 1 are some of the oldest in the Doraemon series, having been originally published between 1969–1974.
What strikes me about early Doraemon stories is that the Doraemon–Nobita dynamic is very different from later depictions in the franchise. Early manga Doraemon is actually something of a bad influence—most notably, when Nobita finds out that his future spouse will be Gian’s sister Jaiko, who he doesn't like, one story has Doraemon encouraging him to insult and hit her so she'll end up disliking him! Meanwhile, Nobita comes across as slightly more virtuous than he usually does later on (as here he often doubts Doraemon's bad advice). It's something of a role reversal from their more familiar interactions.
Doraemon is also much more clueless in early stories. Later Doraemon can be careless and insensitive at times, but early stories play up the “robot from the future doesn't know how things work” angle a lot more. For example, one chapter has Doraemon demanding that an electronics store put Nobita on television, not knowing how television programs are actually made.
Nobita’s relationship with his parents is quite different, too. It's implied that Nobita's misfortunes partly result from being coddled by his parents, which is certainly not the case later on.
Time travel has been a major theme of the series from the beginning, and this volume contains many time travel stories with numerous variations (including the classic storyline of “protagonists traveling back in time to catch a wrongdoer only to find out that they're the ones responsible”).
There aren’t many stories focused on Nobita’s friends, but several chapters have the familiar group of four hanging out and their general roles are established early on: Suneo as a braggart who induces envy in the others, Gian as a bully who picks on the others, and Shizuka... doesn’t get much characterization, but is clearly intended to be Nobita’s love interest. The running gag of Gian forcing everyone else to attend his apparently awful singing recitals is introduced.
Some of the most iconic Doraemon stories in this volume (as determined by my personal experience and biases):
“未来の国からはるばると” (“All the Way from the Future”, 1970): The introductory story where Doraemon arrives from the future and Nobita meets him for the first time. (There are actually six different versions of this narrative, of which three are collected in this volume, but this is the most famous one.)
“おばあちゃんのおもいで” (“Memories of Grandma”, 1970): Nobita travels in back in time to see his grandmother, who passed away when he was in kindergarten. (This story bears the distinction of having had more anime adaptations than any other Doraemon chapter.)
“かげがり” (“Shadow Catching”, 1971): Nobita separates his shadow from himself so it can run errands for him, but the shadow gains sentience and threatens to take his place.
“ロボ子が愛してる” (“Roboko’s Love”, 1971): Doraemon brings Nobita a robot girlfriend who is programmed to love him unconditionally, but she gets jealous easily and has superhuman strength, so things don't end well...
“プロポーズ作戦” (“Operation Proposal”, 1971): Nobita’s parents can’t agree on the circumstances of how they got together, so Doraemon and Nobita travel back in time to see what really happened.
“のび太のおよめさん” (“Nobita’s Bride”, 1972): Nobita travels to the future and finds out that, following Doraemon's arrival, he is now fated to marry Shizuka.
“一生に一度は百点を...” (“Getting 100 Points for Once”, 1973): Doraemon lends Nobita the Computer Pencil, which can automatically solve his homework problems. Nobita is tempted to use it to cheat on an exam.

Why Osomatsu-san is an amazing tribute to Fujio Akatsuka
Before talking about Osomatsu-san, it is necessary to talk about Osomatsu-kun. It was a comedy manga series that started in 1962 by the mangaka Fujio Akatsuka and had an anime adaptation (black and white) in the years 1966-1967. Later, in 1989, it had a second adaptation, but this time in full color.
Tumblr media
(The sextuplets have a photo of Fujio Akatsuka in their room)
The story of Osomatsu-kun follows the lives of the Matsuro sextuplets: Osomatsu, Karamatsu, Choromatsu, Ichimatsu, Jyushimatsu and Todomatsu. They are kids that live the adventures and misadventures of being six, but they have their parents and many friends to accompany them.
The manga and anime series had a lot of success when it first aired in Japan, and the Matsuro brothers became popular and recognizable from the Showa Era.
Tumblr media
Many years later, in 2015, Pierrot Studio adapted the manga to an anime to celebrate Akatsuka's eightieth birthday and named it Osomatsu-san. This new adaptation showed the Matsuno brothers as adults in their mid-twenties that are “NEET”, a concept referred to the people that are “Not in Education, Employment, or Training”, meaning that they just don’t do anything and live of the money from their parents. That kind of summaries the plot of the series, because they struggle to find jobs because they are too lazy or don’t care for doing anything than having a good time.
The interesting thing about this new series compared to the first two is that the sextuplets have very strong personality traits that difference themselves from the others (even to the point that every one of them has a color to identify with), when the first adaptations only focused on the six and did little to have individuality.
Tumblr media
(From left: Osomatsu, Karamatsu, Choromatsu, Ichimatsu, Jyushimatsu y Todomatsu)
What is so great about the 2015’s adaptation is that it takes the essence of the first and second and brings it to the new century. The writers are aware of the respect they must have for the work of Fujio Akatsuka (who died in 2008) and they mantain the original aspects that made Osomatsu-kun so great and funny, and give it a fresh air of modernity. The sextuplets are everything to this show: Their fights, their funny moments, their internal conflict and friendships, their love interests and personal likes, everything is so very well calculated and thought to make a tribute to what they were, but leaving space for growth to the characters. They even make jokes breaking the 4th wall and laugh about themselves for being so old.
It’s no surprise that Osomatsu-san has 2 seasons and a movie. It was a real success in Japan, they even had stores dedicated to the sextuplets!
Tumblr media
PS: A fun fact about Osomatsu is that the sextuplets are often compared to Nobita from the Doraemon series, there’s even people saying that they are a copy, but it’s on the contrary! Doraemon first manga was published in 1969, 7 years later than Osomatsu-kun, and it was heavily inspired by it.
