tips on how to draw raph? :3

I’m a raph lover but he is so hard to draw 😔

hey an!! listen i get u completely, this big spikey boy can be a real challenge

my main advice would probably be to recognise raph’s structure? his shapes and how he’s formed, etc. and the best way for that imo are references! i have a tag for this actually

and here’s some raph refs!

if u wanna know how to draw the entirety of the best boy this post wouldn’t do it justice so here’s some main things:

if you’re trying to replicate the show’s style keep in mind how angular everything is. raph's main shape is a square because of how bulky and rigid he is (helps to encourage his character's role too! love that they made him such a fucken tank)

raph’s head shape is basically if you widened leo’s head- they’re both pointed too

one main thing i do for any head really is keep in mind the eye placement and the cheeks

if u happen to draw faces with the fabled circle and two lines- i use the horizontal line to mark where the bottom of the eyes are- and where the start of the cheek begins (i’m doing my best not to make this into a ‘now draw the rest of the owl’ moment)

if that makes any sense. heres a really shoddy 'tutorial'

i kinda just blank out on my canvas and raph appears out of sheer will

but also just like.

figure out how you like raph's head to look (maybe u want his snout longer, or his jaw shorter, etc etc)

figure out where his brow ridges are located and how they're moving (is he grumpy? is he angry??)

make a mask for his eyes to go in (jebus take the wheel)

pronounce snout (it protrudes, which makes it easy to figure out his facial planes)

do whatever feels right for his mouth- im not exactly rigid with how i draw as of rn, i just do what feels right

ive drawn raph with a more pronounced snout too, and oscillate between designs if i feel like it (truthfully i also sometimes begin his head shape with a square (i mean if im doing a different style), feel free to do that if it helps i dunno-)

if you want to draw his shell and plastron here’s what i do:

being able to carve out 3D shapes will help a lot with the border of his shell

by blocking out the main shape and then carving away at it you can then see how raph’s shell is structured (just. try decipher my sketch if u can pfghjhj)

for the actual shell itself it’s a lot like mikey and leo’s where it has a big curve and then dips at his midsection (where his belt goes!) also keep in mind the spikes of his shell follow those same curves (ft. dr belle)

with his plastron (chest plate) i basically make sure it’s the same length of his clavicle? the jagged edges of it i mean. it helps a lot to map out where his shoulders meet his arms

(pls keep in mind my art’s inconsistent and i don’t even follow my advice- the hole in his shell changes every time i draw it 💀)

his body shape is also just in general wider and stockier- if i ever see people draw him skinnier than he is you'd be able to hear my soul exiting my body

all of him is wider in general! hes bigger than the rest of his brothers so dont forget to show it instead of just giving him a height difference. he BEEG.

i’m not sure how else to describe the process of drawing him other than just. draw him?? 😅 my best advice would be to draw him repeatedly based on references- and study your favourite raph artists’ way of drawing him (mine would be jacocoon and itz_jazzy_jazzin)

and it helps to study bc it can answer these questions

how do you want to draw him? do you like the way a specific artist stylises his features? do you want him more spikey? more sharp? maybe you want to draw him bigger! (i myself like to give him a tail, extra markings on his spikes + a few scars post movie and his mismatched eyes)

repetition is super important to get it all engrained in your brain- and it’s why i don’t really even use refs for him anymore fldjs

dont forget a very important rule: appreciate the big boy in all his glory

the dimly lit common room felt more peaceful tonight than most other nights, most of the other gryffindors were already delicately tucked in for the night.

typically the marauders, mainly james and sirius, wouldve kept the whole house up. however, tomorrow called for james— early quidditch practice, whilst sirius found himself boredly keeping you company.

he would let out an exaggerated sigh every couple of minutes, trying to get your attention, which had failed till just about now.

"sirius, youre driving me bloody insane. what do you want?"

your eyes barely left the fire to glare at him, only to see him stand up and wander off. though odd, sirius was always odd. therefore you did not bother to call after him, nor even look fully his way.

making my own post on the "crazy together causing byler doubt" thing.

and i have advice: you ppl need to stop taking any symbolism or parallels or whatever too literally and seriously. like, actually look at the scenes and not just go "well they are certainly saying words".

we agreed that crazy = (romantic) love, and love makes you crazy. that is true. but its not that simple. all three instances of it, are in three completely different contexts and situations.

jonathan tries to get nancy to leave but attacks steve after he taunts him about his family and insults not only him but the ppl he loves. he’s not just defending nancy from being slutshamed.

"only love makes you that crazy, sweetheart" - the crazy = love thing is made all romantic because the series tries to put the focus on the fact jonathan has feelings for nancy. its a tool. but theres context for it, and that is the fact that jonathan went crazy because of his love for joyce, will, not only nancy. they are treated as side characters of sorts here, though, because the show focuses on the romantic implications of that scene and how it involves jonathan and nancy, plus a character with no knowledge of jonathan’s issues making assumptions. this particular line isnt about jonathans family.

"crazy together", is another instance, and again you cant take it too literally. jonathan went after steve because of his family not just nancy but the show is trying to make going crazy symbolize romantic love specifically. they make it about jonathan and nancy for sake of this. same with byler. its a scene between the two discussing their traumas. in this instance the things that make them go crazy arent romantic!! what makes will go crazy is literally UD visions come on. and mike’s issue is feeling he sees el etc. he is just a child going thru survivors guilt. mike constantly calling el and having hope she survived isnt him being in love and peak romance. just like, i remind you, mike being devoted to finding will isnt proof of him being romantically in love with him. remember lucas risking it all to find will? yh its a weak argument. the romantic thing about it all is them saying they’ll go crazy TOGETHER.

in short jonathan sorta went crazy over joyce and will too but the duffers went for making it about jancy and the family love thing is shoved in the bg in favor of presenting the romantic love makes you crazy thing.

will went crazy over ud visions, mike went crazy over the situation with el. but thats not the romantic parts. its them going crazy together.

and third - "they do say it makes you crazy" which again isnt meant to be taken 100% srsly as proof mike loves el or whatever. context, context, it matters. this is supposed to show us that oh crazy together wasnt so friendly, mike himself mentions love makes you crazy so —-

It's August 1st and my first ritual (and first concert literally ever) is in 29 days. I'm practicly VIBRATING I'm so excited but I'm also stupid nervous. I have breezy clothes, ear plugs, tickets ready to be downloaded, I'm good on that, I'm just so worried with this being my first concert I'm going to forget something or mess something up? I wanted to draw all the ghouls and give them to them but found out they weren't doing a meet and greet when I bought the tickets so that's some anxiety I don't have to worry about but I seen someone said they accept stuff at the merch booth?? I didn't even know merch booths was a thing really

okay first things first; you are NOT alone in feeling nervous, let me start with that. ive been to many a concert, and for some reason this one's making me quite anxious too (mines on the 12th! ahh!)! but listen, ghost as your first concert? that is GREAT choice

some things to consider; look up your venue's policy on bags, what can you bring/not bring? some venues have weird things on there, so you might want to double check that. for example, someone in front of me had to throw away their chain from their wallet, couldn't wear it in. only bring it what you really need. last time i only brought my id, credit card, car keys (JUST the car key, my other keys were IN the car lol) and your phone (where i presume your ticket will also be). i recommend pockets when you can, a small back without too many pockets for quick check-in as you go through security. for your sake and theirs!

if you're gonna be in direct sun; SUNSCREEN. PLS. FOR THE LOVE OF SATAN. protecting your skin is super important.

ear plugs are IMPORTANT TOO! im glad you have them. you will absolutely be able to hear everything, dont fret about that.

i might also recommend sturdy/closed toed/comfy shoes. its so easy to get your feet stepped on accidentally for whatever reason , no matter if youre in the pit or have a seat. and you dont want your feet to hurt halfway through either

i also wouldnt bother with complicated accessories or things that are easily lost/pulled (i.e. long necklaces, dangly earrings, lots of rings), they just become a hassle. to me, anyway.

as far as the drawings go, i havent heard about being able to gift anything via the merch table (usually theyre situated by the entrance to the venue where they sell all the cool stuff!). lots of people test their luck by throwing shit on stage at the end of the show but, personally, im not the biggest fan of doing that. also i cant throw for shit lol. i know a lot of people are sad about the no papa meet and greet. i wish the ghouls still participated in those like they used to way back when, but once cardi came about i believe that stopped.

bottom line is, dress comfy and have a good time! let me know if you have any more specific questions

how do i forgive myself for ignoring my friends' texts and reaching out to check on me, when i was very depressed and dealing with multiple crisis? I stayed away and didnt ask for support and then ghost them. I also didnt connect with other people or post on social media where they could see it and get hurt by me ignoring them.

I just laid low and licked my wounds in private. My issues were not things they could help with (like my marriage having huge fights, unemployment , being sick, my mom being hospitalized)

But i dont know if i deserve to be their friend still?

I feel so overwhelmed with guilt that i dont know how to reconnect with them or how to reply.

Especially when i read posts that say "cut out people who disappear on you" or "its time to drop ppl who dont make an effort to meet u halfway " when i read stuff like this i feel stricken with panic and i afraid that my friends will buy into this narrative or be convinced that i deserve to be cut out.

I feel ashamed and lonely.

More info: the last time we were in touch i used to be there for them and listen to them a lot and host them and take them out when i could. So im not a very useless friend (i think). But im just very bad at keeping in touch when im overwhelmed n hurt by my own life.

Please will you or your followers give me some peace? If you were in my friends' shoes, would you forgive someone like me ? Would you be okay with me reappearing after 2 months?

(Btw me and these friends all reside in different cities so these are all long distance friendships based solely on texting).

Hey love, sorry to hear you’re going through all of this. And i’m sorry to hear ab all the difficulties you’re facing.

I know some people like to lay low and deal w their issues first before going to others for support. (i do the same thing!) and as a result, distancing yourself from relationships can make sense.

It’s totally understandable to feel guilty and lonely as a result of all of this.

And regarding the internet’s thinking on relationships & cutting people off - it’s so false. I think it makes sense to end a relationship when it’s abusive/unhealthy - that’s real yknow. But it’s such black and white thinking. Don’t listen to the internet. And i certainly don’t think it applies in this scenario.

You clearly value your friendships and i’m sure they value you and care ab you. Honestly? Shoot them a message, explain what’s been going on. Don’t hold back. Arrange a dedicated time to talk if you can.

We all need friends. And yeah you may feel ashamed and guilty but don’t let it prevent you from reaching out. You need a good support system around you and you don’t want to lose your friends, especially in a time when you’re facing difficulty. Support and community is essential. We all need it. We all need love.

Be honest, and tell them how you feel.

If this was my loved one, i would be concerned more than anything. I love all my friends deeply. I’d want to hear from them and ensure they are okay. I wouldn’t hold it against them if they are already going through a tough time. I’d offer them compassion & empathy.

And you’re not a bad friend. Don’t believe that thought. The fact you asked this shows you care.

Please take care of yourself. Ensure you are leaning on your support system. If therapy is available to you, it may also be worth considering. Sometimes you need a safe space to process what is going on. It sounds like you’re going through a lot of stress.
