Sometimes I wish I could stay at seventeen. It was not a golden age, but I remember more clearly the joy and euphoria I felt than the bitterness of existing and cohabiting with people who did not fully understand me.

I loved, love, and will love my friends, but I have always been aware of the line, the palpable difference between them and me. There is something that makes me utterly different, something that makes me adapt to their needs and preferences even when I shouldn't, because they are not bad people in any way, it's just that I am the product of my father's insecurity and my mother's anger; my destiny was decided from the moment I was conceived.

I am a girl loved by many, but how many really understand me? How many are able to see that, beyond the multiple masks that I use and that I create with the same ease with which I breathe, am I just someone lost in the transition from adolescence to adulthood?

I love, I love but in a controlled way. Never giving too much, subtly distributing the fragments of my heart, those that I know no matter what will never be easily damaged. I fear abandonment, I fear closeness; I long for a hug but I run away from hands, I miss the heat of a body against mine but I don't hesitate to choose my pillows over a human being. I love like a deer, fleeing at the slightest movement, longing for warmth but burning under its touch.

The life of a faker, a coward.

And the truth is (the oh so uncomfortable truth, the one buried between my ribs that makes me want to scream) is that the only thing I have ever wanted is to be loved. And boy have I worked hard for that. I hate loneliness but my refuge is in her arms, I love company but she shuns me as if I were ghost.

All I've ever wanted is to be loved. So I changed, I practiced my smile in the mirror, I learned all the fucking names of the celebrities of the moment, I learned to speak, to lean over to appear defenseless and friendlier; I used everything to my advantage. And I did it, I made friends, there are people who genuinely love and appreciate me. I know, this is a fact.

But I don't feel comfortable.

Like wearing a soft sweater, only that it's too soft. Unreal, inadequate. There is a lack of honesty in the love that is given to me because there was dishonesty when i came to making them love me. If I don't know myself, how can I expect others to love me for who I am? I feel desolate, abandoned and helpless. The closeness makes me uncomfortable and terrifies me but I long for it, I long for it so much.

I don't feel comfortable with my friends, nor with the rest. This is the truth: I don't feel comfortable in my own skin, my soul caged in this prison that calls itself my body. Someday I will accept my sentence, or perhaps I will escape this inhospitable disguise first. Whichever comes first.

I can only blame myself.
