Rocker has never doubted your loyalty, not for a single second.

This thing between the two of you may be casual but he knows you don’t have any intention of seeing anyone else, the same way that he doesn’t. Which is why he’s surprised when Stevens tells him you took home a Detective in the Robbery division the last night.

“Carter’s telling everybody what a wild time they had.” Stevens informs him as they change into their gym clothes. “It makes me want to punch him in the face.”

It makes Rocker want to punch the other man in the face too, because Carter, he’s lying. Rocker knows where you were last night, you were with him, wrapped up in his sheets, calling his name, coming on his cock. He can’t tell Stevens that because you’re keeping things low key for this exact reason.

You don’t want other cops thinking you’re an easy mark, that you’ll jump into bed with anyone of them. You’ve worked so hard to get where you are and all people will see when they look at you is the girl that fucked Carter, it makes Rocker’s blood boil.

He doesn’t manage to get you alone until much later on. You’re in the kitchen making coffee, when he leans against the work surface alongside if you, his arms crossed over his chest.

“There’s a rumour going around that you fucked David Carter.”

He sees your shoulders tense, you pause stirring your drink before you tilt your head towards him.

“He tried to buy me a drink at the bar last night.” You tell Rocker. “I told him I wasn’t interested…”

“And now he’s telling everyone you slept with him.” Rocker summarises.

He understands what happened. Carter isn’t used to being rejected and nailing you, one of LAPD’s only female SWAT officers would gain him a lot of kudos and back slaps. Rocker fucking hates it. The other man doesn’t give a shit about you or your reputation, he just wants to bolster his own.

“What do we do about this?” He asks you because Rocker, he likes to be proactive.

He wants to get in front of this, stop it in it’s tracks.

“I’ll take care of it.” You say quietly.

He opens his mouth to ask what that means but the two of you are interrupted by Luca.

It’s at the end of his shift he finds out about what happened. He’s been out on a call and returns to overhear Street and Tan discussing it as their switching out into civvies.

“She tore him a new one in front of his entire division.” Tan tells the other man. “It was brutal and epic.”

“How pathetic do you have to be to make up something like that?” Street says shaking his head. “I don’t know what was going through his head, she’s completely out of his league.”

Rocker finds the edges of his mouth tipping up into a smile. He should have known he didn’t need to worry about you or your reputation, you’ve handled it all on your own.

Going to change a few things: Our gal of the hour won’t have served with Hondo in Somalia, I was thinking Iraq or Afghanistan to make her more around Rocker’s age group. I’m also going to have them meet at Deac and Annie’s Vow renewals. And the afterparty had fireworks? I just rewatched that episode so it’s fresh in my brain. And the gif is from that episode. This is the dress I was picturing our [yn] in.

Luca had just finished helping Chris tie on name cards to all the chairs at the venue when the first guests started to arrive. Tan showed up with his new girl for everyone to meet. Mumford was next, some other of the 50 David team, and Annie and Deacon’s friends from church started trickling into the venue. Luca, being Luca, hopped around from group to group, talking with everyone, checking in, and making jokes as always. His heart stopped for a moment as the ultimate babe walked in next to Rocker. All tanned skin wrapped in a butter yellow dress. 

That’s not Rocker’s wife. Luca thought to himself.

Rocker must have said something dumb, cause next thing Luca saw was her punching his shoulder and laughing at him. Her laugh lit up her whole face, it was mesmerizing for Luca to see. He decided to approach the odd pair. “Whoa there Rocker, not smart to bring a woman who isn’t your wife around here. People might be asking questions.” 

Rocker was too stunned to speak, while he was trying to stutter out a reply, the girl in question stepped in. “I’d chop his balls off if he so much as looked at another woman, don’t worry.” She held out her hand for Luca to shake, “my name is [y/n]”

She’s sassy too. I love it. He took her hand and shook it, “named Luca. What are you doing here with a scrub like Rocker?”

Rocker finally found the words to speak. “She’s a friend of mine and [wife’s name], she just moved here about 4 months ago. [wife’s name] couldn’t come today so she thought this would be a good opportunity to have her introduced to some of our other friends.”

Luca smiled, “the more the merrier. Welcome to the party. It’s nice to meet you.”

“You as well. Do you work in SWAT with Donovan?” 

Donovan rolled his eyes, “Nah, he’s on the other squad. Not as badass as ours.”

“Oh hold up hold up, If my memory serves me right, it was 20 David that won the Dusk Till Dawn race, not 50 David.” 

[y/n] tipped her head back and cackled, “oh that’s rich.” 

Luca smiled at her, “So how did you guys meet?” 

“I teach self defense classes downtown that [wife’s name] goes to. We hit it off and we’ve been buddies since then.” 

Over Luca’s shoulder, Mumford was calling for Rocker, “Shit, do you wanna go with me or..?” 

“Nah, I’ll stay here, I’ll find you later Donvan.” 

“Alright, Luca, behave.” 

Luca rolled his eyes and shoved Rocker in Mumford’s direction, “get out of here already.” 

She chuckled, “he’s so full of it sometimes.” 

“All the time.” 

She beamed a smile, “you’re right, all the time.”

“So what got you into self-defense?”

[y/n] shrugged, “Friend of a friend was looking for a new instructor, so I decided to make the move. I’m going to school to get my health and wellness degree before moving on to something else. I just kind of go with the flow now.” 

“That’s the best way to go. Come on, I want to introduce you to some people.” Luca put his hand on her back as they maneuvered through the crowd, the silky fabric running through his fingers. She was phenomenal, quick witted and could dish it as well as receive it when talking to Luca’s friends. 

When they got to Hondo he remarked on a tattoo she had on her left forearm. “How long did you serve for?” 

What the hell is Hondo going on about? Luca looked between [y/n] and Hondo, she smiled at Luca and showed him her left forearm. A black snake was traveling along her arm, with the head ending just before the bend of her elbow. On the serpent's back the words ‘This We’ll Defend’ curved with its body. The slogan for the US Army. “I got it after my second tour in Iraq along with the rest of my squad.” 

“That’s a sick design you got there. How long did you serve?” 

“I did three tours in total before calling it 10 months ago. I never wanted to make a career out of the Army.” 

Hondo nodded, “I get that. Ever think of police work?” 

She shook her head, “I respect what you guys do, it’s brutal. I’m looking for something different for myself.” 

Deacon yelled above the crowd, “alright everyone, Annie and Jessica just got here. Places everyone.” Everyone got to their seats, Luca sat himself right beside [y/n] not wanting to leave her side. 

He leaned over to her and whispered, “have you ever been to one of these before?” 

“No, but I’m assuming they’re like any other ceremony.” 

After Annie announced that she was pregnant with her and Deacon’s fourth child the crowd cheered. [yn] looked up at Luca, “not that I’m assuming doesn’t happen often.” Luca tipped his head back and laughed at that.

The afterparty was a blast. The venue had the classics blasting and [yn] and Luca danced together for most of the night, too caught up in each other to notice the knowing smirks among the 20 and 50 david teams. 

Near the end of the event someone made an announcement for a small firework show that would take place in the next five minutes. If Luca wasn’t glued to [yn’s] side, he would have missed her tensing up. She nudged his shoulder, “I think it’s time to pack it in, I should go find Donovan so I have a ride back into town.” 

“It is getting pretty late. I’ll help you find him.” Sure he was disappointed that she had to leave, but he was revving himself up to ask for her number, or what gym she worked at so he could see her again. As they moved through the crowd, the bright smile [yn] had been wearing all night disappeared into a look of worry. Luca’s brows furrowed, “you all good?” 

[yn] kept looking around, searching for Rocker with no luck. “I’m fine Luca, I just -” 

BOOM 

Luca’s head snapped around to see the bright gold fireworks light up the night sky and spiral out among the stars. When he turned back around toward [yn] he couldn’t find her. 

Where did she go? 

Luca moved quickly through the mass of people, looking for a slip of yellow when he ran into Rocker. “Shit Luca, what happened to ‘keep your head on a swivel’?” 

“Have you seen [yn]? She disappeared when the fireworks started. She was looking for you.” 

Rocker shook his head, “no, I’ll check out here, go check inside of the venue. I’ll text you if I find her.” 

Nodding he went inside the venue, searching between tables and looking in all the open doors he found. He was really starting to get worried when he heard sniffling coming from the last door. Approaching it slowly, Luca put his ear to the wall in time to hear another muffled cry. He all but tore the door open, all to look down and see [yn] with her back against the wall and knees tucked up to her chest. 

PTSD? Luca’s mind was racing, trying to remember what Hondo had mentioned before. 

“When I first got out, the smells, the sounds, the shockwaves, would put me in fight mode… and I love fireworks. It took some time - a few years maybe, before I could enjoy a fourth of July show with my mama again.” 

Kneeling in front of her, he put his hands over hers that were muffeling her ears. He spoke as calmly as he could to her, “hey, [yn]? You’re safe, we’re at the venue remember? The sounds are only fireworks.” 

[yn] finally looked up at him, tears still in her eyes, “this is not a combat zone.” 

He shook his head, “we’re as far away as we can be.” He stood in front of her and held out his hands, “Come on, I’ll take you home ok? I’ll keep you safe.” 

She sniffled and wiped at her eyes before putting her shaky hands in his. She’ll be ok. Luca will make sure of it.

how it all began [ donovan rocker ]

⋯ SUMMARY ; donovan happens to cause an accident, not realizing that you are now overseeing a few missions within the swat headquarters. which is the starting point your relationship and how it all began // @mirabee

⋯ WARNINGS ; female!reader, slight angst [ car crashes + arguments ], general fluff [ enemies to lovers (?) + some flirting ]

donovan stepped out of the car, shock evident on his face as he looks over the damage between the two cars -- nearly grimacing at the long white pin-stripe along the length of the black coupe. 

he hadn’t been paying attention, looking down for a second only to look up and realize he strayed off course. resulting in him overcorrecting and sliding the front driver-side quarter panel along the length of the parked car.

to make matters just that much worse, while he had no clue who’s car he had just scraped along side of, he had done so in mumford’s company car -- something the older man had lended to him for the day as a little present after a few comments were made in regards to how cool the vehicle was.

“hey! what the hell did you do?!” a voice shouts over at him, causing him to whip around to find you stomping toward him from the store front you had just come from. he steps around the car, holding his hands in front of him in hopes of easing the situation as you get just a few feet in front of him, “i’m really sorry! i wasn’t paying attention and side-swiped you. uh, i have all my insurance information, and if you want to take some pictures of the damage so you can make a claim...” he trails off, usual composure instantly leaving his body the second you confront him about the state of your car.

“i want your name, insurance, and a picture of your drivers license and plates.” you state, already pulling your phone from your pocket as he scrambles to grab all that information. giving you time to walk around the cars -- snapping pictures of the damage and the plates on his car.

“here’s all my information...” he states, handing you over all the documents you’ll need in order to file the claim with your insurance, “and again, i’m really sorry. if things come back, and nothing gets covered, i’ll pay for the damage.”

you eye him suspiciously, taking a quick picture of his documents before stepping back, “well, lets just hope everything goes through. i’m not going exactly be excited if i have to have contact with you again.” donovan figures that’s far enough, not leaving the scene until you’ve gotten in the car and driven off.

the conversation with mumford doesn’t go any better, considering the man had steam practically coming out of his ears by the time he had finished yelling at the younger man. donovan had swore up and down that he would pay for the damages -- learning more after you had filed a claim with your insurance, and he realized that it didn’t cover the full amount of damage done to your car.

so, imagine the shared look of surprise that came across both your features when 20-david came into the briefing room, finding yourself and commander hicks centered around the main desk.

donovan had cursed under his breath, eyes dropping to the floor to avoid your harsh gaze before commander hicks set to making introductions of yourself to the team. of course, you were a specialist commander that can been called in on a favor a hicks -- which meant he was in a whole world of trouble.

by the end of shift, he had managed to approach you the second you came walking out into the parking lot, “i have something for you.” he states, forcing you to stop in your tracks as you turn to face him, “how can i help you sergeant?”

he grimaced at your use of his title, before pulling the white envelope from his backpack and holding it out to you, “it’s to cover the rest of the damage.” you take the envelope from his hands, eyeing him suspiciously as you tear it open and pull out the check. your eyes scan over the numbers, realization hitting you the second you see the large amount, “you didn’t have to - “ 

donovan simply waves his hand, cutting you off softly before sighing, “i told you i was going to pay for it. and from what i understand, your insurance wasn’t going to cover the rest of it. so please, just take it and fix your car.” he leaves you with a smile, trailing off towards his own car as you look over the numbers again with a small smile.

by the end of the week, you’re stepping back into headquarters once more. on a mission to find donovan as you fiddle with the white envelope between your fingers. after checking sight of him, you call out his name, jogging up to his side before holding the envelope out to him, “you gave me too much... so i’m returning the amount that wasn’t used.”

“so, everything was fixed?” he questions softly, brow raising slightly as you nod, “car’s in the shop now, just waiting for the call to go and pick up. but again, you gave me too much. so please, take the check.” you sigh, practically pushed the envelope into his hands as he chuckles and shakes his head, “please, keep it. just incase they might screw you over on repairs. i give that money to you to use, so please, use it.”

“i can’t do that. i’m already grateful enough that you even followed through on your word, can you just take the money back please?” you plead with him, shifting from foot to foot as he sighs, “how about this? i’ll take the money back, but you have to let me take you out. as an additional way for me to apologize for you even being in this situation.”

you eye him softly, holding back your smile before letting out a laugh, “why do i feel like that was an ulterior motive to get me to go on a date with you?” enjoying the way he phyiscally paled at your words before you waved you hand to show you were only joking, “i’m sorry... but i’ll take you up on that offer. only if you know a good place to do.”

donovan nods, smiling brightly, “oh, i do.” you nod, attention turning as commander hicks comes striding into the room, shouting out orders towards 20 and 50-david before sending them out to deploy on a scene. you watch donovan run off, joining up with the rest of his team -- the man shooting you a bright smile before disappearing around the corner.

and that’s how it all began.
