Found some sprouts of dogbane while clearing my yard this weekend. I clipped a few sprigs and used the sticky sap to reinforce my protection spells, then left the rest to grow. Dogbane is indigenous to my area and my mother-in-law (gods rest her) used to maintain a patch on her homestead. We'll be keeping this patch going if we can.
Also unlocked a memory as I was pulling up huge bundles of vetchweed and clover. When I was very young, I would sing while picking flowers because Disney movies had taught me that songs could make flowers bloom. And in my 5yo mind, I believed it would help more flowers grow if I sang to them.
Soooo I guess I've been at this magic thing longer than I thought, even if it was purely accidental at the time. 😅
Anyway, another step toward the garden I've always wanted. I'll keep you posted!

Different stages of dogbane processing. Experimenting how best to clean and separate the fibers without losing a bunch and breaking down all the long lengths. I haven't carded the most recent batch, but 1. Scraping off outer bark before splitting the fibers from the pith and 2. Cleaning them with a comb instead of going straight to cards seems to be helping. Although a big part tbh was just splitting the stalks cleanly with a knife instead of breaking apart by hand.
Insane how soft they are when carded well though--hard to find specific resources (there's some youtube on a lot of these bits but not as much for washing/post spinning processing) but wondering if it'll need boiled and beat the way flax does (from what I can tell nettle too).
Experimenting is fun but hate ruining stuff the further I get in processing. I have a good stock of stems foraged and know where to get more (although they're more at risk of being degraded this far in the season) but it does take a long time for a little. I'm having fun with it and doing small bits at a time due to caution and impatience lol but if I ever want to get as far as actually making something. I will need to actually make a lot lol.

It's me again! If you want another fanon swap, could I get a fae Joe?
you absolutely can!
Tumblr media
this design of @joehills took quite a few iterations (I left several of them on the page) since I decided to steal some ideas for what the fae are from @filibusterfrog 's amazing worldbuilding concepts for fae and archfey.
I would say this is based on the dogbane leaf beetle, but really, it only was a passing influence

Prompt 18 - Dogbane Potion
@wolfstarmicrofic March 18, word count 218
“But if you don’t know what it does, why are you brewing it?” Sirius asked his brother. Regulus looked up from his cauldron and narrowed his eyes at Sirius.
“Because it’s poisonous to dogs.” He sneered before turning his attention back to the potion.
“REMUS!!! HE’S DOING IT AGAIN!!!!” Sirius called loudly to Remus, who was on the other side of the small room. Remus winced at the volume.
“Sirius! I have wolf hearing. You never have to yell. Ever.” He wandered over to calm his boyfriend.
“Regulus, why are you brewing Dogbane Potion?” Regulus smirked at Remus in a way he knew made his brother mad.
“It’s a difficult brew. I wanted to prove I could do it.” Remus nodded. It seemed like a reasonable reason. Regulus’s eyes glinted, and Remus knew he was going to add more. He rolled his eyes in exasperation before the words even left his mouth. “Plus, you never know when it might come in useful for annoying mutts.”
Remus grabbed the back of Sirius’s robes and steered him out of the dungeon classroom before he did something he would regret.
Remus popped his head back through the door.
“That had better not work on wolves, or I’m gonna be pissed.” He warned Regulus before he walked Sirius outside to cool off.

Bug of the Day
This very cool orange caterpillar is the Dogbane Saucrobotys (Saucrobotys futilalis). I typically see congregations of this species on the dogbane in my yard. This one was flying solo, perhaps because it was so close to pupating. Still eatin' tho! :-)

Dogbane leaf beetle, Chrysochus auratus, Chrysomelidae
Found in eastern North America, dogbane beetles feed on plants in the Apocynum genus. Plants in this genus contain toxins (cardenolides) that, when ingested, are fatal to many organisms, including humans, causing cardiac arrest. However, the Dogbane beetle is able to consume the plant and compartmentalize the cardenolides into glands. If threatened, the beetle can secrete the cardenolides as a defense mechanism.

Spreading dogbane (Apocynum androsaemifolium) is one of the great pollinator plants of early summer, which is no surprise given that it resides in the same family (Apocynaceae) with milkweed, another essential pollinator plant that blooms concurrently with dogbane. Both milkweed and dogbane produce a milky latex, which varies in toxicity to animals and people. But oh that nectar . . . In just the minute I stopped to take these photos, the subject plant was assailed by a lovely Virginia Ctenucha (Ctenucha virginica) moth, North America's largest wasp moth; a great spangled fritillary (Speyeria cybele); and a small skipper (Hesperiidae).
Photos taken at the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge.
