Anna Berington, Bib #2, at the Ceremonial Start and ReStart of Iditarod 52. March 2 & 3, 2024. Anna is one half of the team of Seeing Double Racing, a kennel she runs with her twin sister Kristy. 2024 was the first time Anna ran Iditarod without her sister running a second team. Berington was quoted as telling her friends and family just before going up to draw her starting number that she just hoped she didn't pull the first bib number... which is exactly what she did (Bib #1 is always saved for the honorary musher).
Why didn't Kristy run? Several factors played a role, a big one was Iditarod going back to 16 dogs per team (though several teams chose to start with less) and the rising costs of entering and preparing for the Iditarod. The twins chose instead to split the racing duties all season with Kristy running the Quest while Anna focused on Iditarod.

The other day sled dog guy was telling me about the race and he told me there was a young lady there running the 6 dog race that was from Florida and she had never been on a sled before. He suggested I run the 6 dog next year 😂

The four dog team that was only half my own dogs to four of my own dogs with a rather different pace, hitting 30+kmph when at top speeds, so much less time to be goofing with such things as hands in the air. Intro team was Chase and Noir in lead (my own pups), Mya and Gem (borrowed, RIP Gem) in wheel. Current four dog team, Kenai and Trapper in lead, Skadi and Zuko in wheel. I can switch their running positions around, no one is locked into a certain place, although my little black and white siberian, Trapper, is a little speed demon so if I were to try her in wheel more often I end up with tangles galore, therefore she is a pace setting lead dog, and a wonderful one at that. <3
Chase and Noir are only out on the trails socially now as they are both over 11yrs of age <3

Lmao I hate when people compare dog sledding and horse racing as if they are equivalents in animal abuse.
Horse racing centers on gambling. Dog sledding does not.
Race horses are owned by the wealthy who have trainers, grooms, and jockeys to do the work for them while they cash in on an insane amount of money from gambling/stud fees/breeding. Mushers work a second job, take sponsorships from regular joes, live off the land and get frostbite on the regular just to afford to keep their dogs fed, fit and healthy.
These are not the same.

Someone tagged that video of Eevee chasing Hermes to say that Hermes was playing chase while Eevee was herding and like THAT IS A VERY VALID CONCLUSION TO COME TO WITH THE EVIDENCE PRESENTED, I can see why you would think that, very sound logic... but it is only half correct. Hermes has very little interest in chase as a game played between dogs anymore -- which is something I've noticed a lot of pointers seem to lose interest in as they mature? -- and is much more interested in running for the sake of running or to hunt now.
You can tell the difference really obviously with him if you ever get the chance to see him do both because when he's playing chase he pays more attention to the dog chasing him than to where he's going which makes him do head empty shit like run full speed into trees (which is why I don't really like him playing chase because he has hurt himself doing that before). When he's running just to enjoy running -- like in that video -- he has his head high, actually looks forward and doesn't run into shit, and runs around in random loops and circles. He also runs at a slightly more relaxed looking pace in a weird bouncy hoppy sort of way that's a few notches below his top speed when he's running for fun like in that video, whereas when he plays chase he runs all out TOO FAST (and scares me).
Hermes would be running around exactly like that regardless of whether or not Eevee was in pursuit of him or even in the yard. When he stopped running at the end of the video where I stopped recording he completely ignored her instead of initiating wrestling or a short game of bitey face to finish off the chase which is another sign that he's not actually playing chase with her, though she may be attempting to play with or possibly herd him. The boy just really, really loves to run. If he's off leash outside he's running. It might not be in quite the same way as mushing dogs, but pointers are still dogs bred to run and to do so for hours across large distances. I would say that running is probably Hermes' favorite thing in the world after hunting and catching prey.

The 1912 Race to Claim the South Pole
Read the latest LOST IN HISTORY post on the Race to the South Pole.
Captain Robert Scott’s team on their trek to reach the South Pole first. There was a time, over a century ago, when there were still amazing feats yet to be achieved on Earth.  Being first to reach the South Pole in Antarctica was one of those coveted prizes.  Those who were first would claim international fame and have their names etched into history books.  Those who failed, often lost their…

Congrats Dallas Seavey & team
...despite receiving a two hour time penalty from race officials determined to keep him from breaking Rick Swenson's record, he still pulls off a record 6th win.

Would any of you be interested in purchasing stickers of the sled dogs at the kennel I work at by any chance? I don't expect anyone here to because we are not local to you, but we are making stickers of some of the dogs to sell and if anyone is interested I can hook you up once they've been ordered and are ready to go. But yeah if anyone is interested lmk. So far we do have lots of interest from people on Facebook. Most of the stickers feature my photos 😊

Defending champion leaves Iditarod race over health concerns
ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Brent Sass, the defending Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race champion, withdrew from this year’s race on Saturday, citing concerns for his health. Sass scratched at the Eagle Island checkpoint, a statement from the Iditarod said. Eagle Island is about 600 miles (966 kilometers) into the nearly 1,000-mile (1,609-kilometer) race. “He didn’t feel he could care for his team due to…
