What is the most interesting end for Mizu in your opinion and if you could guess, what do you think the writers will do?

1. Doomed by the narrative all the way (her story starts sad and ends in a even bigger inevitable tragedy)

2.She gets what she wants but will never find true happiness (maybe lose someone she loves in the way)

3.Gets what she wants and finds contentment and even happiness.

OOOH this is an interesting one, and right out the gate I would 100% immediately choose Option 3 here, which is that Mizu gets what she wants and finds happiness and contentment.

Now I am a SUCKER for tragedy and bittersweet endings, they are soooo juicy like don't get me wrong (the novel manuscript I'm working on is literally a doomed-by-the-narrative type story!) but in my opinion, though all stories can be tragedies, not all stories necessarily should be.

This is because a story's ending, and what makes an ending satisfactory, is heavily reliant on the promise that it sets at the very beginning.

A narrative promise is essentially what the story is telling us to expect when we start the first episode or read the first chapter or click the start button on a game. As such, the promise is usually given to us in two primary ways.

First is the story's tone. What sort of language does it use? What sort of art direction does it employ? Its music, its camera angles?

In BES, the story starts off with some dynamic long shots of Mizu walking with her back turned to the camera through the snow, the wind whooshing and dramatic music in the background, while words fade in and out on the screen:

In 1633, Japan closed its borders to the outside world. Citizens would never see a white face, nor any face that was not Japanese. A child born mixed race would be considered less than human. Pitiable. Monstrous. From these times rose a legend. Of a swordsman. Of a sword. Of revenge.

The music ends in an epic crescendo. Cue title screen.

From the above line, we can already see that the tone is that of a dramatic, epic, action-filled story about revenge. From that first scene, we see Mizu's confrontation with Hachi, and from this we already see the promise that this is a heavily-stylised action martial arts series that will be violent and gritty.

On that note, its fight sequences also follow video game logic a lot of times, and overallm a lot of things are not very realistic or necessarily 100% historically-accurate. This, together with a lot of casual dialogue and humour littered throughout, makes it a story that doesn't take itself too seriously. It's rather blockbuster-ish in that sense, and while very well written and rife with beautiful imagery, symbolism, and nuanced characters and themes, it is not intended to be high literary work by any means.

And while Mizu's backstory is indeed very tragic, the story we see in the present is very tonally different, chock-full of one liners and silly lines (thank you, Ringo and Taigen, my silly boys, for that) as well as flashy action scenes and montages set to rock music. The tonal shift between the past and present stories is also in part what makes The Tale of the Ronin and the Bride stand out so prominently among the 8 episodes.

Besides the tone, a story also delivers its the promise through its character arc, which is presented to the audience by showing us a variety of things related to the protagonist, such as:

what the character is missing in their life: for Mizu, it is love and acceptance;

their desires: revenge, because as we see from her backstory, she has been unable to obtain love/acceptance;

what's preventing them from achieving it: Mizu adamantly believes that she is a monster who is not capable of loving or being loved, and this is why she pushes Ringo and Taigen away in present day;

and their flaws: Mizu is stubborn, narrow-minded, and is driven purely by hate and anger. Taigen tells the viewers this very clearly in Ep7 when he says she's killing Fowler "Not for honour. For hate." And also in Ep8 when he says to Ringo, "Mizu doesn't care about anyone but himself and his revenge." Mizu's "ember" is her anger and desire for vengeance.

Thus, from all this, we can come to a conclusion that the show's promise is something along the lines of

Mizu gets her revenge +

Mizu unlearns her self-hatred and stops letting her anger be the only thing guiding her +

Mizu stops running from people who care about her so she can finally get the love and acceptance she's always craved.

IMO, only by fulfilling all three of these promises would the story have a satisfying payoff.

Whether the revenge will be directed to the white men, though, is up for debate, as there are a lot of theories going around that maybe the white men aren't as evil as she thought and none of them are even her fathers, that Mizu's true enemy is Lady Itoh and the shogunate, etc. The third point, regarding love and acceptance, is also a point of discourse, because we don't know who she'll end up with, or if she'll end up with anyone romantically at all, whereby the story opts to make it an open ending focusing on platonic/found-family bonds rather than any romantic one.

Whatever the case, it doesn't necessarily matter, and I'm open to pretty much all directions the writers may take us as long as SOME revenge is achieved, blood is spilled, colonisers get their dues, AND Mizu gets to be loved and happy.

BUT if you ask me for my ideal version of that payoff... I think it's no surprise to anyone when I say I want Mizu to live a nice peaceful and secluded life, in which all her past adventures fade into myth and legend (as implied in the opening text).

Because while I'm almost certain Mizu is related to some royal or important bloodline, I don't think Mizu would find happiness in a life in the palace. She has never wanted greatness, has never even hinted at wanting power or anything like it. She craves belonging and the freedom to be herself, and to be loved for all her flaws and dualities. These are things she needs to grow and be a better person as well. A life of politics and intrigue inherent in being a royal heir, or in being a samurai loyal to the shogunate (even if it is under Akemi's future administration) would offer no such freedom or sense of peace for Mizu.

So yeah! Peace and quiet and happiness, maybe living on a farm like she did with Mikio. But of course that life wouldn't mean anything if she were to live it alone, because remember she wants and needs love and belonging. As such, I think the one most suited to give her that would be Taigen (for a variety of reasons).

This life could be with or without their bestie Ringo, depending on if Ringo decides to travel and find his own greatness, and it is implied that Ringo does leave Mizu's side to go on his own adventures, as hinted by the creators wanting a spin-off centered around him.

And also Mizu and Taigen go to visit their mutual ex-girlfriend Akemi sometimes for like special occasions or something.

the Donquixote brothers are yet another fucking tragedy, hell their blood line is. Doflamingo’s alias is the ‘joker’, while Rosinante (the better brother) resembles a clown or in my opinion a jester. These brothers represent a Jester and a Joker, here’s why:

Jester (Rosinante) - in the medieval times, a jester symbolizes common sense and honestly, and was often giving insight or advice on the monarch. While Rosinante doesn’t give advice on how to run his brothers crew (because he was thought of as mute and undercover), he does have a higher position and ‘protection’ (ig) because he is Doflamingo’s brother. Jesters also have another role, psychological warfare, often riding in front of enemies to mock them, this fits better, considering Rosinante was a double agent. But jesters are also characterized as destructive and with a mean streak, this could be seen with Law, as it showed Rosinante doing anything to get a cure for him and eventually ending with him sacrificing his life so Law could live and escape his brother.

Joker (Doflamingo) - a joker is chaotic and unpredictable with intelligence, they also can be depicted as a ‘one bad day away’ scenario. Doflamingo, always one for looking towards the future and how to grow empire, making most of the decisions wild, but not undoable. As for the ‘one bad day away’, that is down with the fact that he killed his own blood family, with the father it was more of karma. With Rosinante, it was out of a sense of betrayal, first he ‘leaves’ or disappears when they were just children, then Rosinante left again with law and stole the Devils fruit, which he probably thought was rightfully his. I will say that that the deaths were caused with future goals in mind, if he loved more in the present, then 50/50 at least Rosinante lives….

Rosinante probably has more because I like him better and know more about him than doflamingo but I am a sucker for angst and tragedy.

I want to talk about this part of my Good Omens brainrot quiz (or, rather, diagnostic tool);

“[ ] I have been sad that I am not an immortal, celestial being fighting for the opportunity to finally be with my soulmate and lover, another immortal, celestial being forced to work for a rival oppressive government, after 6000 years of queer yearning and forbidden desire. Because this one felt really personal and specific when I typed it - yet it seems that many of you checked this box. It tells me that we are, at our cores, yearners. We might not even have an object to yearn for, and that’s painful enough in itself - but we yearn for impossible and unconditional, eternal love. It’s safe to say there is a lot of neurodivergence in this fandom, and neurodivergent folks have generally had their fair share of trauma; we’ve been ostracized, criticized, bullied, ridiculed, betrayed. No wonder we desire this.

Ancient Greeks were into the ideal, the origins of our ideas - and they were very much interested in matters of the soul and love (put very simply). If we yearn for something that seems impossible, where does that yearning come from? Humans have always been suckers for great and tragic love stories, and (fleabag.gif) Good Omens is a love story. One of the longest, most tragic and yearnful ever written. I mean, Romeo and Juliet were what, 13? Saw each other once? Twice? (Don’t remember) - oh, boohoo. Try 6000 years of queer, forbidden longing for your hereditary enemy and NOT offing yourself when they run off to Heaven.

Of course we want that. We want to be these two guys so bad, even with their six millennia of going slowly insane for each other, because no matter what, they know. They KNOW, right, and all they really need is the other one. There is no “oh no, I slept with my ex” or “I’m not sure about moving in together anymore” or “my coworker is so nice, we have so much fun at work” - no, these guys only love and need. each other. They might not be allowed to be together, but there is no doubt in their minds, is there? How simple, in all its tragedy! Wouldn’t we all choose 6000 years of painful knowing, rather than our partner suddenly dumping us for our best friend or [insert your personal relationship trauma here]?

I think I would.

While I am not in the least shipping Chu Qiao with YY this time around, I do like him as a character a lot. And I think the main reason is he is a rare person who accepts responsibility for his fuck ups and outcomes of his actions or inactions.

Think of the scene when he visits Yan Xun in jail. YX, desperately, keeps asking him whether he did X, Y, and Z - all actions that contributed to the platform tragedy (not warning him, preventing his escape etc etc etc.) And YY admits to it all even though there are explanations or excuses for each and every one of these.

He provides none of those explanations or excuses because he gets something most people do not - that all those explanations and excuses would be insults to Yan Xun, that all they would be is attempt for YY to justify himself as not that bad, but none of them would change the ultimate fact - his actions and his inactions (even if different in gradation or kind from what YX believes they are) all led to Yan Xun on that platform, being broken over and over. Trying to justify himself would be trying to go "I am also suffering! see, I also have pain" to the actual victim.

The closest he comes to that is this:

But he stops after that one sentence escapes him. Because ultimately whatever he did or didn't do, he realizes it all comes to this:

He protects them from outside prison (the only way YX and CQ survive the waves of assassins is because of him) but once again, neither knows because for all his coldness, for all his passivity, YY understands what is fair and what is deserved for him, and does not deviate.

PS As I was telling @aysekira, I have pictured LGX as my Mo Xi from Yuwu for years and years but never could figure out who I wanted for Gu Mang. And now I am going - aaaaaaa just have Shawn Dou be Gu Mang in my head cast. The look, the vibe, hell even the fact that he's a little shorter than LGX all work. And hey, they totally were great at both jumping into beds or fighting to the death. So mmmm.

PPS I normally loathe love triangles, but rewatching PA made me realize something - I don't really hate the trope, it's just that it's almost never done to my satisfaction. It's always ML and SML clearly delineated so you know the outcome/importance so what is the point. Also, it's either an OTP and an annoying interloper who has no chance or FL is waffling and if she doesn't care enough to pick, why should I? BUT!!!!! The very few times it's done right, I lose my mind - this, Bu Bu Jing Xin, Lost You Forever. By that I mean, both choices have to have equal narrative importance and arcs and time (PA for example, is definitely a dual ML drama in the traditional, not "we are putting a fig leaf over a danmei adaptation" form), but also I am a sucker of there is a possibility for either depending on reactions and the world and/or FL loves both differently for different reasons during different points in her life. This is vvvvvvvv hard to pull off right but when they do, mmmmm!

PPPS I don't usually go "threesome would solve all your problems" (and here it definitely won't since YX's issues are not of the type to be healed by love) but it would be at least worth a try? Chu Qiao definitely has enough energy for both of her dudes, YY is icy enough he needs two people to melt him and clearly poor YX needs double the TLC. win win win, say I.

Say, mind doing a fanfic of (My TADC OC) Mooz’s Friendly Relationship with Kaufmo before Pomni’s Arrival where they are like best pals, and maybe add a scene where he just stands at Kaufmo’s Door after the events of the pilot episode had happened, please?

Here you go. It is going to take place when Mooz first arrived into the Digital World. Hope you don't mind if my oc does appear in this.

A new being popped up onto a stage, suddenly looking around in a state of confusion and panic. Music was playing while a bunch of objects floated around. The being quickly dodged the objects while backing away.

However, he soon found himself accidentally bumping into someone. The being jumped as he watched a purple jackrabbit in magenta overalls, a tall, white king chess piece in a purple robe, and a ribbon-like creature stumble down. The ribbon creature's comedy mask broke, revealing her tragedy face.

The music stopped as everyone turned to look at the being. "Caine, is this one of your NPCs or is this a new sucker?" The jackrabbit asked. "Because if it's a new character, we're gonna have to redo this whole theme song." He had a rather mischievous grin on his face.

"I'm not doing that again," A mix-and-match toy said to the jackrabbit, her arms crossed while she looked unamused.

"Serious, newbie…" A humanoid wax figurine stared at the being. "Please be careful next time. Do you have any idea as to how long it took for us to rehearse that?" She placed her hands on her hips.

"Calm down, snow princess~." The jackrabbit said her, grinning.

"Uh, who are you people?" The being asked. "Where exactly am I?"

"Take it easy, new stuff," A ragdoll said. "We've all been there on our first day of coming here. But you eventually get used to this."

"My, my!" A floating AI whose "face" resembled teeth flew down to the being. "It appears that a new human has entered this realm! And what is your name!?"

"My name…?" The being tried to say something. But then he realized that he couldn't remember his real name. "I-I can't remember! Why?"

"Nobody remembers their name when they arrive here," A being in a yellow clown outfit said. "I'm Kaufmo, by the way. Perhaps I can help you pick out a name?"

"Uh, sure?" The being asked. "What name do you have in mind, Kaufmo?"

"How about…Mooz?" Kaufmo suggested.

"Mooz?" The jackrabbit scoffed. "Is that all you could come up with, Kaufy?"

"Shut it, Jax!" The mix-and-match toy said, glaring at Jax before turning to Mooz. "But welcome to your new home, Mooz… Zooble, by the way… Over there is Gangle…" She nodded to the ribbonoid creature. "…Kinger…" Next to her was the white king chess piece. "…And Ragatha." She nodded at the ragdoll. "Crystal must have left to go guard." She noticed that the aformentioned wax figurine had left.

"I see you met Kaufmo," Ragatha said. "Maybe he can introduce you to the others." A smile was on her face.

"My comedy mask is broken," Gangle sobbed.

"GAH!" Kinger yelped at the sight of Gangle before calming himself down. "Oh, Gangle! You startled me!"

Time went by for Mooz. He had gotten used to how things worked around in the Digital World. Plus, he and Kaufmo became the bestest of friends.

The two did everything together. Whether it would be something as simple as cracking jokes or doing one of Caine's in-house adventures, they always had fun.

Life in the Digital World was fun for them. Until one evening, Mooz decided to ask his friend something.

"Kaufmo, as crazy as this may sound, do you believe that there's an exit?" Mooz asked.

Kaufmo went silent for a bit. He thought about it rather deeply. "Huh, up until now, I never gave it much thought," Kaufmo admitted. "I would ask Caine, but you know how he is. However, if it makes you feel better, I can try to find out if there really is one."

"You mean this wholeheartedly?" Mooz asked.

"You bet!" Kaufmo flashed a smile. "That's what friends are for!"

(Present)

Mooz now stood in front of the door to Kaufmo's now vacant room. The only difference was that his friend's face now had a red x over it. He only visited this place whenever nobody else was around.

"Hey, Kaufmo," Mooz softly said to himself. "Though, I know you're no longer here, I just wanted to tell you about this new member. Her name is Pomni. She's a bit shaken up, but if you had met her, you would have helped her get used to things around here."

He gave a sad sigh, slight regret appearing on his face. Why did he have ask Kaufmo about an exit? After asking, his clown friend became determined to find one. And at the cost of his sanity.

The day that Pomni arrived was also the day that Kaufmo abstracted. And to think that Ragatha was looking forward to introducing him to Pomni…

Maybe if he hadn't said anything about an exit, Kaufmo would still be here. The majority of his friends have since been abstracted for the same reason and are now in the cellar.

"I'll miss you always, Kaufmo." Mooz turned around to face away from the door. "There may be a day where we will be reunited. Along with our other friends. If possible, I look forward to it. I'll keep smiling and making others for you, my best friend."

Without another word, Mooz walked down the hallway, leaving Kaufmo's door behind.

I'M GLAD YOU AGREE WITH BILL. I LITERALLY SHIP HIM AND RYAN LIKE CRAZY

I mean, like,

Okay. So we know how Ryan is kinda some way about relationships. He's like "I like you but you're too much work but I'm not gonna tell you that because then you'll leave me and sometimes I want to leave you but I'm not gonna because then I'd be lonely and a loser so I'm not gonna tell you anything so you'll stay and I'll pretend to like you always in the best way I can even" about people and ends up an asshole most occasions. He's genuine multiple times but not enough and to not enough people in his self imposed rolodex and you can see that in the games and the book, and it's not just Diane or Cohen. He's like that with Sullivan, who I think he cares for, but because he can't understand Sullivan all of the time and wishes he would stop being Sullivan on some occasions, he ends up undermining and underestimating his judgement. And it hurts him when Sully dies, you know, or at least that's what I gather from the book; whether that's a blow to his pride that the rolodex is thinning out or because of actual genuine emotional attachment is up in the air, but the blow is a blow.

Bill is the same. Bill, maybe Greavy too before he died. Ryan likes Bill a hell of a lot more than almost everyone else. Bill's death is the same clinical detachment as all other deaths in the games with Ryan, but in the book, well. Karlosky says it best:

He didn't see Bill die, like he didn't with Sullivan, but this time it was voluntary. This is more than a blow to pride. Bill was like his safe space, in some instances. Like in the dinner scene at Kashmir at the start, when he isn't thinking about going off to Jasmine, he's wishing Bill were there at the table and is even elated when he gets called away, presuming Bill is already on top of the situation.

(also in this scene is the tidbit where Ryan laments on having already been married and "Never again," is his end to that narration, and nobody talks about that I am chewing through drywall—)

Bill is the closest thing Ryan has to a friend, which is still a long ass stretch. Ryan likes Bill, but Ryan is Ryan, and that is the entire tragedy on the matter. No matter how much he's gone and loved, gotten himself attached, genuinely feels for a person, pride comes first. Pride, not even Rapture, not even the ghosts he was running from from the outside world, he doesn't even care when he becomes the very monster that killed his aunt and uncle on that train platform and forced him and his father into hiding, if only under a different name, which is entirely too fitting. Bill, Diane, Greavy, Sullivan, Jasmine, and even Cohen, presumably, end up dying because Andrew Ryan is a man who does not buckle, does not compromise even when he should.

You would wonder if he were a different man, maybe the sort who would build a city under the ocean not to run from taxes, but from the biased and alienist regimes of the government above, who didn't value capitalism over humanity, who actually lived up to the whole "no gods, no kings" bit, if we could have had him and Bill in that office where Bill quietly admits to himself that Ryan is lovely when he's just sitting at his desk with his glasses lost in work, if he would have let go of Diane and didn't hang her on a string, if he listened to Sullivan about the plasmids and Fontaine and Culpeper.

But that is the tragedy of Rapture, and I'm a sucker for tragedies and alternate timelines where things are different and Ryan reads fairytales to Jack in his native tongue and tells him about the things he will never have to face ever so long as Ryan is alive as he falls asleep, whilst Bill watches from the door, reminiscing on how far they've come.

Or alternatively where he meets a stranded Robert House in 1933 and gets his ass handed to him by an apocalypse approved civil engineer and Rapture looks like an art deco reef instead of just New York on green filter.

Or he's a vessel for some kind of Cthulu and Bill has to handle that and Fontaine is freaking out because the feds didn't tell him this op has eldritch monsters peeking in from the windows and half of everyone is stuck here under Ryan's dead eyes being slowly fattened up to feed to some kind of monster lurking just under Persephone and who's like "alright yes you can have the plumber and all these others for yourselves pet, but remember you have to feed the slugs." and the little sisters once turned become his children. you know. usual shenanigans.

TLDR; yes, I love the lion and plumber ship because the lion is just a big awkward nervous housecat when the plumber walks in the room and the plumber is surprisingly territorial like wow Bill, chill, Cohen's like this with everyone, hold your wrenches—

WE'RE FINALLY HERE. WE'RE FINALLY AT S3E7 - FRESH BLOOD

And you KNOW ya girl has a lot more to say about this one so let's just get this party started shall we.

And now that I have CONTEXT I have THOUGHTS

The tragedy of this character is awful. But I'm appreciative for what it allows as a narrative device (as much as it is a shame that this random woman is negated to being that, and only that; a device) - after they've SEEN vampires be good and live a peaceful life. It's harsh that they just cull her off and decide that its a decision they are allowed to make.

This will surely not come back to haunt them when Dean gets infected in three seasons time.

I am a big sucker for anytime this show has them Decide something for others, only to be hit with "Oh no now its happening to us" and the immense emotional turmoil that causes.

Going to lean into this a lot more in the fic I think.

Bella hon I love you, but seeing Dean give a genuine threat because the man's got one thing to lose now and he's not letting anything take it away while he's still alive; marvelous.

Throw one too many low blow shots about him being no better than you and maybe just maybe he starts to act like it.

Now I did skip to watch this episode cause I can't help myself, I like vampires too much and spn hits the spot. Having said that re-watching this with context on GORDON has made it a lot more interesting.

Now I really. Like. Gordon. He's a great antagonist. His voice, his mannerisms, the way he is so uncomfortably unsettlingly calm. Phenomenal. He has some really iconic lines and moments in this show and he's such a good foil to Dean.

Absolute epitome of "become the thing you despise" but deep end side of it. Like he's become so consumed by obsession and righteousness in his actions and his drive is just too strong.

I enjoyed that this ep looks at the primal survival instinct. And the duality of the Winchester's (mostly Sam) attitude towards Gordon being; man's gotta go, contrasted with the way Gordon talks to the Vampire. It's the gradual build up of detachment. Gordon is a monster. So are the Winchesters. None of them want to see that in themselves. The Vampire is too. They're all just coming at it from different angles. Each party has deep rooted trauma and pain, and each are dealing with it in a terrible way.

Sam's uncomfortable attitude shift of "It's Gordon or us" is harrowing. Dean being the more hesitant one is interesting. He's the first to chop off the head of a infected woman who's confused, upset, and pleading for help - but Gordon makes him uncomfortable (despite everything) and Sam's cold cut attitude doesn't help. I mean they've left him alive twice and each time he's only gotten more ruthless.

Dean cracks a joke about Sam not pushing back against killing him, but that feels far more like Dean fishing for Sam's conscience because he's unsure what the right thing to do is because Gordon isn't by definition an 'evil thing' in the lore books. Sam's no longer the grounding rock.

Oh if it were so easy.

You can really see they were dabbling with the transformation scenes in this and they just came in SWINGING when S6 rolled around.

Ok so. This really begs the question. How much willpower does it take to resist. How much does that differ, per person? Is this Gordon just full SNAPPING upon being turned? Does he just immediately relent due to him already being on the brink? He has the most intense and unhinged attitude of all the hunter's that've been given primary screen time, so maybe its fair to say that part of him just completely caved in once he got hit with the overstimulation + hunger combo.

I think back to his introduction episode and how he talked to Dean about the hole inside yourself, like the pit or void you'll never fill or satisfy. How he used that to drive himself forward. Working solo, without a rock to anchor himself to (Dean has Sam) maybe Gordon just completely lost himself in this initial phase after turning.

This also echoes the S6 moment when Dean visits Lisa and also gets violent. Dean also loses control but ALMOST bites her. He still throws her and Ben around like they're ragdolls, which he clearly never intended to do.

Once again, great shots in this show. However I do wonder if its just my personal bias, or if there is a bit of an imbalance of woman corpse. Don't want to throw a stone from a glass house though. Just feels weird not mentioning it when I'm like "WOW SICK SHOT" and its. This picture.

Anyway. More to the point. "You don't understand. I was desperate. You ever felt desperate? I've lost everyone I ever loved. I'm staring down eternity alone."

Now THIS is what I'm talking about. It's so fucking human. What a shame, we're forced to see ourselves in something we deeply and truly want to believe isn't like us at all. Oh Dear. Reconcile THAT Dean you little shit.

This is so nicely echoed in S6 - the vampire is done, he's lost everything and he'd just rather have it end. The nihilism, the bottom of the pit. The end of the downward spiral.

Gordon's turn on Eternal Damnation and he wants to get off.

Once again I deeply enjoy the way the Hunters just drop everything so cold when something happens to someone. Including Sam and Dean in that, they struggle cause they're younger, less experienced, less jaded. The older hunters are fucking brutal. Gordon's partner, despite genuinely believing Sam has to die, just full send tells Gordon "No I can't let you take out Sam first. I need to kill you right now."

Despite everything, the common goal that they both wholeheartedly believed in, that they both gunned for so hard, thrown out the window when one is turned. Hung out to dry.

And how quickly they all turn on each other when this happens.

Anyway I think lore wise the vampires get stronger once turned, but I'm guessing drinking human blood enhances this further. Making notes for myself cause Dean's on a strictly vegetarian diet and this complicates matters for him of course.

But yeah, jesus, Gordon.

Anyway

Now THIS is something I gotta remember - Dean becomes a fucking menace when he's scared. Jokes get more intense, he has no filter, does not stop at nothing even despite the increasing protesting of the people around and closest to him and he full disconnects from loved ones.

"No. I'm a monster."

UGH. Compels me.

It's the resignation that's so fun I think. Like he just snaps, decided Yeah, this is it. Eats some people, then goes back to the original plan of Kill Sam. But its the way he leans into being the monster. Gordon was a mess before, but now its like he's truly just let go of a part of himself as he truly believes there's no alternative. Every vampire he's met and killed he saw as a monster and nothing more. Despite one, in front of him, exercising self control, he's still committed to viewing them as only monsters.

Once turned he can only accept the singular reality that he is a monster, and so, he does nothing to combat it. He embraces it.

Is it easier to kill him when he's a vampire? Or was it a further reminder that he was, and still is, a person?

Closing thoughts: good ep, easily one of my favorites. But you already knew that.

Now, for my question, as we know that OGs and more specifically CGI movies are only canon to them, the new approach Capcom took with Leon's relationship with Ada starting RE2R to RE4R and how he's basically done with her at the end, there's a vaaast difference there imo it's practically unmissable and even Nick was talking how Leon is "done with her shit" to put it bluntly. So it really does seem like there's a different approach to Leon's entire relationship with her. And when we combine all that, it makes sense that Damnation is cut out of this because it's just not gonna fit... the entire concept and point of this game is Leon moving past his trauma that includes Raccoon City and Ada both, and he does that by forming a bond with another human being that he rescues but also Luis. There's so many different things and the way they play out that to me personally this is absolutely a different take on Leon. They're now two different people/characters. Which is why i am so excited and ready to see how RE6R will play out especially with Ada where we get the utmost closure.

Again, this is my two cents. But i really love your takes and i wish you continue. There's so many misinformation out there that's being spread on an almost daily basis that this fandom deserves some clearance. Stay strong and take care !! <3

Oh I absolutely agree!!! Capcom's definitely taking a new approach to Leon and Ada this time around with the remakes. Admittedly, I'm not the biggest fan of the vilification of Ada in the remakes, but then I've never been a big enough fan of her to have a strong opinion on it either way? Especially since they're just heavily leaning into what was already there in the original games, so I'm all here for this different perspective. Leon's feelings towards Ada in RE4R are completely justifiable and feel very realistic and genuine. Also I'm a HUGE sucker for narratives where two characters grow through their experiences with one another, so the way that Ashley and Leon do just that in the RE4R makes my heart melt. I'm really glad Capcom decided to approach Leon's Raccoon City trauma in the way they did — with his relationships with Ashley, Luis, as well as Ada and Krauser, being representative of him processing his inner turmoil and moving forward.

I think a lot of the misinformation floating around is just misguided, ya know? I don't think a lot of people are satisfied with the information provided to them (regarding anything prior to the remakes), so they're constantly digging for more and can easily find themselves believing something that's not necessarily true because that's what they want to believe. They want there to be more depth laid out in front of them than what's already there, they want a certain level of tragedy to be properly explored with good writing, etc.

Then the other part of it is that I think that younger/newer fans just take issue with OG Leon when they're not sexualizing him (which I'm not saying is wrong, mind you). Almost like people are threatened by the idea of their favorite character being flawed in a way that they don't deem as acceptable. Leon's flaws are relatively minimal and often come at the detriment of himself rather than others, but that doesn't mean that he is without any flaws that impact those around him. OG Leon wasn't/still isn't written with gen-z kids in mind, so I feel like it's natural for younger people to gravitate towards remake Leon because he's more palatable. He feels safer, so-to-speak. I think that's perfectly reasonable. However, I think the general bias skews peoples' perspectives when taking OG Leon into account.

Also I think people are just confused lol because of how murky lore shit can be, and again, people are want to believe anything that makes them think that there's more depth than what's being provided in canonical material.

That's why I'm happy to share my own meta/knowledge/whatever, because I think it's nice to offer another perspective into the mix!!

1.) I literally love Grim and her entire premise, story, character, etc, etc. It's all super cool and I wish I thought of it first (/j)

A.) I want to sit her down on one of those therapy chairs and just.. pick apart her brain like I'm doing surgery

B.) For the romance plot: yes, but horrifically traumatized as she learns what it means to be human and actual emotion because The Voice ruined that for her (before inevitably turning back into a statue because, assumedly, The Voice is no longer with her). Because I love tragedy: no.

2.) I mean this positively, but The Voice really reminds me of the fucked up angel from The Mandela Catalogue or Rher and Per'kele from Fear and Hunger and I am a sucker for divine characters using fear/terror/other means for their own, twisted purposes

A.) If you were to put me and The Voice in a room, they are walking out in a straitjacket with multiple nurses on each side (:

A.) I absolutely love Lolnye, but I really did not expect her AT ALL as Grim's love interest

B.) I personally think Grim is around 26-27, so that in turn makes me think Lolnye is around 23-25? Based on her gifted kid status, it kind of makes me think Lolnye would be younger

4.) Since I haven't been in the room where it happens, I don't have a lot of theories or thoughts surrounding Grim, but I am really curious about where you're going with her character and what her views on different things the world both with and without The Voices shades on

1.) To preface, there are 4 goddesses in the venomverse, Nayru, Farore, Din, and Nabooru. Nabooru merged with a demon as a marriage (of flesh) and became Demise. Below them are deities; Hylia-- Zelda, Aram-- Fierce Deity/Link, and Ifetu-- S'avahili. There are more but they're the only ones worth mentioning.

Because of S'avahili's (then Ifetu, when she was originally cursed) connection to anything heat related (the sun goddess, Din, and flaming, burning, hatred incarnate itself, Demise, who formed the Gerudo Deserts and Death Mountain), Zelda (then Hylia) thought to curse her by making her perpetually cold.

Aside from making it near impossible for her to feel warmth (she can feel it, but doesn't do anything for her body temperature) it: flares up when in specific areas (anywhere near saltwater/the ocean or Rito Mountains) giving her chronic pains in her joints, the chills almost entirely freeze her vocal chords, gives her chronic fatigue from the pain and constant amounts of magical energy it takes to keep her from completely freezing over (which can possibly cause worsening degrees of frostbite if not in "safe areas," which can lead to amputation), and make her vulnerable to the Master Sword and light magic.

A.) Hylia originally cursed Ifetu because Nayru and Farore created her as a means to end (or repeatedly defeat) Demise.

(I swear this is all relevant.)

Long story short; Hylia's sleeper agent mind wakes up upon finding out Aram and Ifetu were in a situationship, Sleeper agent! Hylia takes it as Ifetu trying to further "corrupt" Aram and become a marriage of flesh like Demise, Hylia curses Ifetu, and throughout their non-deity reincarnations Zelda just never got rid of it because they both still "hate" each other.

Short story with more information; Hylia and Aram were created by Nayru and Farore while Ifetu and Ganondorf (I don't know his pre-reincarnation name yet 😁) were created by Din and Demise, all four at the height of the gods' war. Hylia and Ifetu were married for a few thousand years prior to the betrayal (Zelda still keeps and wears Ifetu/S'avahili's proposal gifts. The war had entered more of a Cold War state by the time they got together), Aram is officially introduced to Ifetu and they hit it off, Aram awkwardly courts Ifetu (unaware of their relationship, she was not aware he was trying to court her), then sleeper agent Hylia wakes up.

B.) When I first made S'avahili (2015), I had an obsession with making characters that had white hair and characters that were villains' little sisters.

Originally, she only had white hair because I gave Yasehiro (now Yusef) Gerudo-red hair as the prince of Hyrule (Zelda's older brother).

They were supposed to be inverses and then I realized I hated that concept but still wanted her (both of them but this ain't about him) to have a unique appearance that set her apart from other Gerudo.

All that to say: now the answer is yes, her difference in appearance is because of the curse.

In one of the act introductions, it says "The Gerudo had (..) hair made of the same sun she (Din) ruled over," so I figured if the rest of her race would represent the sun and fire in a positive/healthy light, S'avahili would represent the moon and ice in a negative one.

C.) It is possible for S'avahili to remove the curse, but it requires Link.

When S'avahili's presented itself as cuffs around her neck, elbows, and wrists (images below) rather than mainly invisible until prompted, Link needed to carefully cut them off of her in order for the curse to be removed in that lifetime.

Hylia's thoughts regarding the cuffs were "if you trust him so much, you'll have no issue with him putting the Master Sword so close to something so vital."

After deciding to retcon the cuffs, the way to remove the curse instead changed to S'avahili forgetting how to do so once reincarnated and being forced to have someone who does (Koume, Kotake, Ganondorf, and Yusef) to help her and Link do the correct "ritual" to remove it.

Now S'avahili, Link, and whoever remembers has to travel to a specific oasis deep within the deserts, do a prayer, basically drown themselves, and then wake up a few days later with the curse removed.

The only catch is that due to the deserts' two suns (one exclusive to that area), it makes it almost impossible for any race outside the Gerudo and Goron to enter.

They get around that by going at night.

After the curse is removed, it is possible for Link to traverse the deserts without harm (essential for going through the Sand Temple-- Ifetu and Aram's old, abandoned temple) and makes it possible for S'avahili to touch the Master Sword without harm.

The fatigue stays around until her death, unfortunately.

2.) Hylia still had enough common sense so as to not straight up ruin Ifetu's life when she cursed her, which is why she instead made it a progression/timeline.

The beginning is just fatigue, the early stages (upon leaving her "safe zones") are pains in her joints, the middle shows up as frostnip and superficial frostbite, and late stage is deep frostbite or amputation.

Ifetu learned how to avoid worsening the stages of the curse before she died and reborn, allowing the knowledge to be passed into S'avahili.

The only case that has led to amputation (so far) is in Wind Waker, but even that's in specific scenarios.

3.) S'avahili and Ganondorf only have animal traits (a rabbit and boar, respectively) because those were the traits they expressed/representative animals from when they were deities, but they are entirely Gerudo.

(Also because I like drawing characters with animal traits.)

Their ears, tails, (Ganondorf's) horns, and (occasionally) feet serve as a reminder to those outside of the Gerudo (and Goron) that they are Din and Demise's deity children reborn.

(Also because they like them.)

On a related note, their situation are similar to that of the Twili who took their wolfish features from Aram and just never evolved out of them.

A.) The only thing about S'avahili that doesn't change is the fact she's Gerudo, her white hair, and her rabbit features.

It's similar to how Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf reincarnate every life with different looks, but always have key features.

(She can turn into a rabbit though. That's fun.)

B.) Ifetu only died because her brother (deity ganondorf) had been killed, Demise had been sealed away, the other three goddesses had sealed themselves within their elements, she still had horrible feelings towards Hylia, Aram was basically dead, and the rest of the world was beginning to move into a new era which made her figure there really wasn't a use for her anymore.

Ifetu and Aram were only reborn as S'avahili and Link because Aram swore that they'd meet again, he'd never leave her, he'd always protect her, he'd always love her, and other devoted couple nonsense before she put him in his coma and sealed him in the mask.

Upon realizing he had essentially cursed her (because he had not, in fact, devote himself in most of those lifetimes) and because she had abandonment issues, she got the rest of her deity friends to take a vow of reincarnation so she wouldn't have to be alone while she waited to meet Aram again.

(They do not.)

So to answer the question, it's all Aram's fault and he couldn't even make it worthwhile.

(Ganondorf and S'avahili come as a packaged biological big brother-little sister deal because Din and Demise literally made them each others' support.)

Merlin Week Day 5: Free

There are so many reasons to love BBC Merlin. I’ve written extensive meta for all the other days, so for this it’s just going to be a bullet pointed list.

The Casting: there is not a single actor on that show whose chemistry with the other actors stumbles. There is a reason BBC Merlin generated so many ships, and that’s because even if you don’t ship it, you can pretty easily see how someone got there. The cast bounces off each other so well.

The Story: I do genuinely believe BBC Merlin is one of the best done tragedies. The seeds of the downfall are sewn as far back as season 1, but we love the characters so much that we keep watching even as they stray into darker circumstances.

The Comedy: I think the somewhat goofy nature of the show and the dynamics between characters actually serves to highlight the tragedy of the story. There is so much genuine love and affection between characters that when the heartbreak happens, it hits much harder than it would have otherwise. A tragedy is not the absence of happiness, but the inevitable fate of the characters we root for. By giving the characters time to feel like real people with connections to each other, it hurts all the more when that connection and love is the reason for the downfall.

The Costuming: part of this was talked about in my meta concerning how the costumes reflect the story, but also the costumes are *chefs kiss*. Do they borrow heavily from the early 2000s aesthetic? Yes. (I mean Merlin dresses like a medieval hipster)  Do every single one of Morgana’s outfits slap? Yes. Her green dress? Her season 4 black coat? Ugh. 12/10. Also, I am just a sucker for capes and cloaks and by god does this show know how to make a dramatic, flowing cape/cloak.

This show brings me so much joy. I’m on my fifth rewatch since 2020, and I’ve gotten three friends into it since that time. I have loved it for years, but the pandemic turned it into an obsession. I will never be able to express how grateful I am to it for being there when I needed it most.

Hozier is talking about Jegulus in this song and I love that for him (and for me). The same logic, Regulus is fighting for that light he didn't knew he could have and was willing to sacrifice his life for it. I love him so much.

Top 5/Bottom 5 Girls in the supporting cast? i.e. Girls with 30xx in their ID

I'll start with my Top 5 first:

5. Mizuki Rui: 5th place was a toss-up between her and Chika, but I'm gonna go with Rui this time! I love how she keeps pinging between "emo kid who wears chainmail under her school uniform and spouts edgy quotes about demons" to "oh god why did i say that??? brb crawling into a hole", haha. Her magical girl outfit with a million belts is fun, and her awkward nerd friendship with Miyuri is heartwarming.

4. Yukino Kanae: I've been fond of her ever since the NA server days, and I will never not feel robbed that she's been dead since before the story even started. ;; She's like a big raggedy alley tomcat in the form of a delinquent girl-- yeah, she looks like she gets into fights all the time (and she does), but she never goes looking for trouble, and she's a huge sweetheart when you get to know her. How emotional she got when Yachiyo's grandma started doting on her... augh. All she really wants is love, deep down.

The fact that she was so willing and almost eager to throw her life away to save her friends from a witch carries some pretty depressing implications, and it's a shame that she died before the story could explore any of that. :{ I think she could've had an interesting connection with Ren. As far as Kanae's canon relationships go, I love her brief almost-friendship with Kanagi. They have a good dynamic!

3. Natsu Ryouko: Probably my favorite Tokime girl next to Shizuka herself! I love how sincere she is-- the girl can't lie her way out of a wet paper bag, and she knows it. Unfortunately, this means she's honest about things that she probably could've kept to herself (sorry Sakuya), but at least she means well. I've got a soft spot for characters who are short-tempered but protective-- she'll get mad and butt into situations that have nothing to do with her because she can't just sit on her hands while someone is suffering.

I also find it very funny that she's like "yeah I was raised in a Buddhist temple, and I pray and meditate daily, but I'm not a monk or nothin', so I can be horny for hot girls and eat meat. it's all good don't worry about it buddy" and the other characters just... try not to think about how vaguely sacrilegious it feels to grill meat next to some bald old monks

2. Suzuka Sakuya: Taken from us too soon... ;_; Working on her MSS and Another Story ch.3 really made her grow on me. She's such a good girl! I like how she's torn between her duty- helping Promised Blood seize the APS from Kamihama- and her own morals (as well as the PTSD she has from killing her girlfriend "dearest, most beloved best friend" with her own hands in the Blood Tragedy). She tries to act tough and harsh, but she's so gentle at heart that she caves way too easily.

The scene in AS3 where she says that if it ever seems like Yuna is going to lose herself to vengeance, she'll keep Yuna's heart safe until the darkness breaks and the sun rises over Futatsugi again, gets me every time. Especially in hindsight of MS7... ;; I love Sakuya's relationships with Ryouko and the rest of PB, too-- it's all so good!

1. Chizu Ranka: She's one of my top 3 characters in the game in general, main cast included. My baby, my chew toy, my shitty little purse dog... She can be aggressive, underhanded, and cowardly, but she can also be playful, affectionate, and supportive of her friends. She'll call Juri a dumb sack of bricks not to make her feel bad, but because it's true she knows Juri can do better and doesn't wanna just sit by and watch her fuck up. I guess you could say Ranka is kind, but not nice? It's a fun contrast.

And I am still gnawing on the way her guilt, weakness, and fear form an endless cycle of bad decisions. I'm a huge sucker for that "rat in a cage" type of characterization, and how her trauma continues to affect her even long after Juri got her out of Monzenbashi. There is SO much to dig into with her character from all sorts of angles; I'll be here all day if I don't cut this off now. :') BUT I must also say that she's super cute, so extra points for that!!

The vast majority of the supporting cast is just kinda... forgettable to me. I don't actively dislike most of them, but I literally never think about them, either. If I had to name names, though:

5. Sakurako: I guess?? idk why but she bugs me a little. I wish I could explain, but alas... Probably doesn't help that I'm not a fan of Touka or Nemu, and she's pretty intrinsically linked to them.

4. Natsuke Kako: Too generic moeblob for me. Also really not a fan of her artist or design, which I will elaborate on in a sec.

3. Kirino Sae: I don't like her design (her mask is neat, though), and something about her personality annoys me. I can't quite put my finger on what...

2. Irina Kushu: I'll be honest, it's mostly her character design. If she was drawn by someone else, she'd simply be forgettable, but... Have you ever looked at someone's art style and you just know they draw lolicon? Well, it's true in this case. 7. Who is your least favorite character?

I will accept no hate for this but Zhongli. something about his character pissed me off and I never lose the original hatred I had despite accepting him as a necessary character... maybe it's something along the lines of he gave up a huge amount of responsibility without much of a safety net, and because of that he could have caused the deaths of hundreds of innocent people. supposedly he would have saved them all but we'll never know how that would have held up if push came to shove

8 + 9. Favorite nation and least favorite nation?

I'm answering both questions here since I don't have favorites or least favorites. every nation had it's issues for me, and each nation had its upsides.

Mondstadt feels like home, but I found its main storyline to be a touch boring and I dislike how much of the interesting lore and storylines are in limited time events. however, the characters endeared themselves to me quite strongly, and I can't say there's a playable Mondstadt character I dislike in any way- lore, playstyle, general personality, ect.

Liyue is probably lower on my list, mostly because none of the characters really endeared themselves to me, and my overall dislike of Zhongli, who was a major part of the entire quest. (not to say I didn't find the quest interesting. I loved the lore and storyline of it... although the double boss fight one after another tired me out to no end). Ninguang and Beidou mean a lot to me, as do the younger crew (Xiangling, Xinyan, Yunjin, Xingqiu, Chongyun), but as they didn't have major parts in Liyue quests (or parts at all... poor Xinyan...) they don't make the nation better to me.

Inazuma has a special place in my heart, but like everyone else, I had problems with the storyline. it was weak in places, there were glaring plot holes, and some parts of it just didn't make sense. however, it gave us Teppei, so kudos to them. It was a much more emotional storyline than either Mond or Liyue was, and I appreciated that. The sequence after Signora's death was a beautiful moment. I greatly enjoyed almost every single cutscene. Kokomi deserved more, (read, she should have been more of a badass).

the Sumeru quest isn't finished yet, so I don't have a full opinion on it yet, and will be leaving it off the list.

actually, scratch what I said above. Enkanomiya is my favorite nation for the combat ost alone. not to mention the lore and inherent tragedy are gorgeous. i don't think it counts as a nation, though, so-

i am an absolute sucker for hurt/comfort and your most recent fic took me out and made me feel mushy emotions.

i got to daydreaming ab college mattfoggy. we all know the flashback where foggy seemed kinda shocked when matt explained he stitched his dad up. i’m picturing a night where the boys are just a lil tipsy and it’d be oh so painful and fluffy at the same time if foggy started to press more ab matt’s dad and we get to hear some fluff and tragedy bc that’s what matt’s childhood with his dad was like. i think that foggy is an incredible listener and hearing matt pour his heart out about his dad so passionately has foggy feeling the feels (some romantic ones if you’re catching my drift lmao)

this prompt was so cute i just had to write something for it immediately. don't ask me where all this insane writing motivation has come from in the last few weeks, i have no idea lol

Foggy’s buzz is just starting to be replaced by a dull throbbing in his head by the time they make it back to the dorm. Tonight felt like it meant something, like some sort of butterfly effect puzzle piece had just slotted into place, and now Foggy’s life is set on a new path, one that Matt’s guaranteed to be in. As Foggy closes the door behind him, Matt’s already sitting on the floor, back against his bed with his long legs splayed out in front of him. It’s adorable and sincere and Foggy’s inhibitions are still lowered just enough that he slumps right down next to him, sitting criss-cross applesauce like he’s in kindergarten again. 

Foggy leans his head on Matt’s shoulder, and Matt leans his head on Foggy’s head, and Foggy chuckles a little at the Jenga tower of heads they’re making. And then he stops laughing because wow, that’s actually kind of a horrifying image.

Matt reaches up and takes off his glasses, toeing off his shoes clumsily as he does it. “What’re you laughing about?”

Foggy can’t really find a way to congeal all the grotesque images his brain has conjured up into one sentence, so he just settles on, “Heads.”

“Heads?” Matt laughs. “Like, just heads, no bodies? That’s dark, Fogs.”

Foggy takes in a deep breath and settles into Matt’s shoulder a little more. “No, you see, it’s actually a metaphor for… the effects of capitalism on the… wig… industry.”

“Sure,” Matt agrees skeptically, and Foggy hangs on to the low melody of it, letting Matt’s voice run along his skin like wind, leaving goosebumps in its wake.

Foggy’s not totally oblivious. He knows that Matt’s hot, he knows that he knows that Matt’s hot. Fuck, fine, he knows that Matt’s more than hot, that he’s kind and ambitious and funny and smart as they come. And leaning into Matt’s shoulder like this, Foggy feels like a traitor, not to himself but to Matt. Because this has got to be taking advantage of him, right? Foggy’s indulging his dumbass schoolboy crush and blaming it on all the booze and no matter what comes of it, one of them will end up hurt. Either Foggy tells Matt that he’s a little bit, sort of, very, extremely in love with him, and Matt goes into a heterosexual tizzy and leaves Foggy behind, heartbroken.

Or Foggy doesn’t tell him. He keeps it locked up inside and follows Matt around for the rest of their lives like a lost puppy and lets the love and admiration and hopelessness fester inside him until he dies and Matt will never know just how much he means to Foggy, never know that Foggy would follow him to the ends of the earth if it meant he’d get to see him do those little happy jumps again.

Foggy stares at the veins on Matt’s hand, at the way his calves curve in his pants, at the soft, relaxed smile, on his face and decides that, if it means he gets to stay this close forever, he’s fine keeping a secret. 

Shit, if Foggy keeps thinking about this the sadness is probably gonna start leaking out of him and staining the carpet. He changes the subject. “God, man, nine years old when you had your first drink? That’s badass.”

Matt chuckles a little, holding something back behind it. “Yeah, after that I’d always get a shot or two of whiskey whenever my dad needed patching up. It was always our thing, you know? Our boys’ night. I’d listen to my dad fight, he’d come home, we’d clink our glasses and throw a couple shots back, and then I’d get to work sewing him back up.” Matt says it with this wistful note in his voice, nonchalant and nostalgic as if he were recounting something completely mundane like family picnics or something.

Foggy sits up from Matt’s shoulder and examines his face. His eyes are heavy lidded, that same relaxed smile still sitting on his face, and Foggy’s heart breaks a little. “Shit, Matt, I’m sorry you had to go through that. You… you know that that’s not really, like, a normal father-son bonding thing, right?” It’s probably not the right thing to say, Foggy’s mother would probably scold him for being so blunt, but they’re both drunk and loopy and now a little sad so Foggy thinks he gets a free pass.

Once Foggy says it, the smile drops from Matt’s face and something behind his eyes goes a little cold. “... Yeah,” he says, chewing on the inside of his lip. “There was this one time, only a couple months before he… you know. He was supposed to go down in the ninth round, they wanted to keep up the suspense, you know? That just meant that my dad had more time to get beat on, though. By the time he got home, he was cut up all over and he… reeked of blood. I stayed up past sunrise patching him up. I tried to wash it all off of my hands afterwards, but when I went to school, I… I still had blood under my fingernails.”

Foggy is silent. He puts a pin in the questions he had, questions of how someone could “reek” of blood, or how Matt knew there was blood under his fingernails if he couldn’t see them. Instead, he just lays a hand on top of Matt’s where it rests on the floor between them, and whispers, “I’m sorry.”

Matt takes in a quick, deep breath and blinks a couple times. “Yeah, you know, I– I’ve taken off the rose-colored glasses in the last couple years, and I… I don’t think he was really that great of a dad. Don’t get me wrong, he did the best he could, and he was a good man, but… I don’t think a good dad would make his son do that. Maybe under other circumstances, he could have been better, but… he shouldn’t have let me get so much of his blood on my hands.”

Apparently, Matt has sobered up quite a bit since they got back to the dorm if he was able to deliver such a verbal knock-out. Foggy swallows through the tightness in his throat and turns Matt’s hand over, lacing their fingers together and squeezing slightly. Emotional honesty had never come easy to Matt, at least, not in the three years that Foggy had known him, and now he felt like he owed Matt something in return. Maybe if Matt could survive all that with his dad, then Foggy’s secret wouldn’t be so monumental in comparison. 

“I already said it,” Foggy whispers, “but I’m sorry you went through all that.”

Matt just turns his face a little towards Foggy and puts on a small, sad smile. “It’s okay, Foggy,” he says. “I think things are better now. Now I have you.”

Fuck, if there wasn’t a lump in Foggy’s throat before, there sure is now. He takes a deep breath and lets himself close his eyes in anticipation, knowing that Matt can’t see him do it. “I love you, man,” he says, and hopes it’s not too casual, hopes that Matt won’t misunderstand and make him say it again.

“I love you, too, Fogs,” Matt says, and Foggy feels his heartbeat echo through his whole body because now he has to say it again. He can’t let Matt go through life orphaned and still feeling his father’s blood under his fingernails and not knowing how big Foggy’s heart gets whenever Matt’s near.

Foggy jumps out of the frying pan and prays he doesn’t get burned too bad. “No, Matt, I–”

“It’s okay, Foggy,” Matt cuts him off before he can finish. “I know.”

Matt brings their interlaced hands up to his face and presses a kiss, the most gentle and light and honest kiss Foggy’s ever felt, to Foggy’s knuckles. The fire is certainly hotter than the frying pan, but Foggy isn’t getting burned, he’s getting perfectly warmed through and through. Without another word, Matt lets go of Foggy’s hand, strips off his scarf and jacket and crawls into his bed, still in his street clothes. 

Foggy sits on the floor, back pressed up against Matt’s bed where he can hear his breathing already leveling off, and runs a finger across his knuckles. 

Definitely a better outcome than he was predicting, then.

kaz i just love him so much, he's gotta be first. he's so appealing as a character because of that awesome badass way he appears to have everything under control at all times, rolling with every new punch and listening and watching for the openings. and then you get to know him more and he's a drama queen who barely knows what he's doing and just trying to stay alive and maybe say one word to the girl he likes and...so relatable. i love him 2. wylan wylan is great because he snuck up on me--not the most loud or flourished of the characters, it took me a while to get to know him and then it was off to the races. he's quiet, he's underestimated, but he's dangerous and smart and brave. i love love love his relationship with kaz and all the others, and his bravery toward overcoming his own battles! also he's a musician 👌👌 3. inej gosh this is hard--but i decided to put inej third, because although i don't resonate much with her either, she does mean a lot to me. firstly, badass assassin with a hurting heart--my favorite kind of character. kill a man and spend months grieving it, ooh YEAH. :) also she was one of the first ya female characters i met that said "no i won't wait around to fix you, you can fix yourself or you can leave" and that meant so much to lil 17 year old me. also i love how her religion is such a part of her and her growth and journey back too herself *chef's kiss* and i AM a kaz/inej sucker and woooooo does that stuff hit good 4. matthias! ugh. stupid conflicted orphaned soldier. i adore. god the poor dude is ripped away from everything he's ever known, apparently betrayed by a friend, thrown in jail for two years and then taken back to break and enter to his home...and still he's trying to do the right thing. but he can't! he can't go back home like it used to be, he can't. the tragedy of it! and his grudging appreciation for his crew, his new home, and the way he can't help but fall more and more in love with nina...sheer poetry 5. jesper jesper's steadfastness is the most appealing thing about him to me, i think. like yes the man will lose all your money, but he'll always be looking over his shoulder to make sure you're alright, and he'll drop everything to help you kill somebody, and that's just friendship goals. the whole secret stuff goin on with his illness and all that is just delicious too, and again, his arc is just...woooo nina 6. nina made me really emotional when i first met her, i remember. here's a female hero who is badass and powerful and moves through the world like a queen and she's not petite and stick thin. and it's mentioned a few times in relation to her change of clothes or whatever, and nothing else. it doesn't change a thing about her abilities or her life and...that was so important for me and all young girls to hear and on top of it she's funny and caring and deeply deeply flawed...i will eat her like a waffle 7. kuwei i'm sorry to put him last, but i don't know him as well! i like what i've seen though, and his whole pretending not to speak kerch thing and pretending to be wylan definitely speaks to a layer of jokes and explosions i'm sure the future will bring. :D so good for him of course that got really long--but boy was it fun! thanks again for the ask!
