Resources: Books for Networking
Books to build your networking skills shouldn’t just be soft skill books on communication and small talk. You may meet people of different backgrounds and cultures. You might be attending a diverse networking conference; studying at a multi-cultural university; or dealing with clients from all over the world. How do you connect to them? You need to know a little history of where the other person is from, to able to have a great initial conversation. It shows interest and respect.
I highly recommend this book (pictured below). Yes, its a little textbook-y but its short, crisp and to the point.
It’s essentially just quick info on every single country. If you go through it diligently and meet someone say from Latvia, you may be able to recall that Latvia was annexed by the Soviet Union in the 40s, majorly practice Lutheran and mainly export timber, metals and garments. If you can use these facts smartly in a conversation with the other person, there will be a feeling of genuine joy of knowing at least a little bit of their country and they’ll be eager to share more with you. You’ll be able to ask interesting questions and get to learn things from the other person. There’s a good chance of the person remembering you for knowing even 0.5% of where they’re from.
History, culture and religion draw people to each other more than you think. What’s important is being respectful of everyone’s opinions, understanding the world doesn’t revolve around you and being open to hearing the other person’s experience. What the media shows vs what the citizen experiences, you may realise, are two completely different things.

reminders for making diverse picrews
locs, cornrows, twists, and other Black braids do not reflect light as sharply as straight hair does when it's down. If you aim for realism, don't make them super shiny.
freckles are not a bunch of tiny dark dots all over someone's face. they vary in size and color and are not usually completely random. also, if you have darker skin tones in the picrew, don't forget to make the freckles darker too!
if there are different body type options, make sure there are different face and feature options that will make sense (by this i mean, I see a lot of picrews with plus size body options but only slim face shapes and features)
two-toned lip options >
also for lips, its nice to have different shapes and thickness options.
different blush colors are necessary for different skin colors! In the picrews I've seen, light pink doesn't work on dark skin.
stop making dark skin tones grayish and ashy-looking! don't just dim down the brightness on pale skin!
please have more than one brown eye option! and don't make all of them light brown! Add some dark brown and brown-black color options. most dark skin people don't have light eyes.
curly hair options need more than just loose curls. where's the type 4 hair? (._.)
dark skin doesn't just come in medium brown and dark brown. lots of different colors!
if you have a chance, I know a lot of people who would appreciate a hazel eye color option <3
this post explains how to color scars on different skin tones
hijab options are NECESSARY for a lot of folks
I've never seen picrews with options for partial heterochromia, so that would be cool, but I understand if that's not a priority for most, since its pretty rare.
YOU CAN AVOID SO MANY OF THESE THINGS BY LOOKING AT REFERENCE PHOTOS!!!
coming from a white person so feel free to correct

Please, for the love of all that is creative and beautiful:
Never limit your interests because they don't coincide or seem logical to entertain simultaneously. Knitting and fencing? Absolute perfection. Philosophy and skydiving? Magical. Baking and football? What is holding you back??
Don't tape a box together around yourself when it should never have existed in the first place.

Genderful Pride Flag
Tumblr media
Genderful or gender-ful: acknowledging that one's full spectrum self is unique to the individual; full of gender, as opposed to genderless; anything or anyone who dismantles stereotypes of social roles based on gender; encompassing the plurality of an individual’s presented identity, and encouraging positivity within the spectrum of gender presentations and expressions

“I watched Twigs and Hearts be worked and reworked over three years. To me, it has coalesced into a story that is diverse and beautiful. It speaks of love, friendship, and family, although maybe not in the way we expect those themes to be portrayed. Even though I am not one of its creators, it is a project that is very dear to me, and being part of it makes me incredibly proud.” - Cam Ryan P (they/he/she), sensitivity reader & voice actor

OKAY SO-- from top to bottom
my liked songs; basically what I listen to 90% of the time when I don't have a specific mood or vision
etherealism; my soft girl songs. lana del rey, mitski, peach pit, stuff like that. if I want to feel like the pretty troubled being that I am, I listen to this.
bazooka; yk stuff that like,, scratches your brain in a way?? yeah. that's this. freddie dredd, juno, lots of phonk, dark rap, etc.
my discover weekly for when I want to hear new stuff!
phonk; also known as drifting music! ironic as fuck because I can't drive lmao. when I want to stomp through the streets on my way to somewhere, this is what I put on. also great workout music!
RAHH; my loud guitar songs! my favourite band is destroy boys, and they're heavily featured on here. I'm a big fan of riot grrrl music, also royal blood, baby bugs, all that good stuff.
