unpopular opinion: i lowkey miss disney cheapquels. i think at this point we all agree that while they aren’t the best part of the disney catalogue, some of them were actually really nice to watch, with good storylines and cool animation (tlk 2 and 3, cinderella 3, bambi 2… tlm 3 and tarzan 2 have insanely good animation, but the plot was just… meh). they just should have managed better which movie needed which sequel

Animated 1: Cinderella III: A Twist in Time v Pocahontas 2: Journey to a New World
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cinderella III {original-Cinderella (1950)}
Cinderella gets a more active role, The Prince gets a personality, and Anastasia gets a character arc! Plus the Prince is hilarious.
Such void character development and helps provide some explanation for the plot holes in the original.
Dude, it's so good at developing the characters. Prince Charming has some funny moments (him jumping out the window is iconic), Cinderella is shown to be clever (she sneaks into the castle, and Anastasia get some sweet moments. While the original is a classic, this sequel has something that it doesn't.
Pocahontas 2 {original-Pocahontas (1998)}

Do you have any ideas/headcanons for what Melody's relationships with her grandfather and six aunts are like? Also, do you have any ideas/headcanons about Ariel's Sisters/Melody's Aunts and whether or not any of them got married and had kids of their own?
A few yeah! I dont have anything really super thought out but I've always wished we saw more of Ariel's sisters in the sequal and honestly wish those three Mer-kids Melody met were written to have been her cousins:
Tumblr media
I feel like it would have given greater depth to both why Melody would want to stay a mermaid if she'd had actual time to bond with these mer-kids, (as it didn't look like she really had any friends her age on land) and then having them turn out to be her family she didn't know about would have added great pathos to the separation of the family.
(Honestly in my head the brunette girl and the Asian boy are her cousins, and blondie is Urchin from the tv show's son)
I also realized I never had shown my Canon Descendants design for Arabella, a Descendant who's mentioned in the books as Ariel's neice. I decided to make her the daughter of Attina as she's heir to the thrown and thus it makes sense for her daughter to have a more prominent role as well.
Tumblr media
And fun fact! Attina is actually the first sister we have (semi) canon confirmation is actually married! Another reason why I choose to keep TLM's 3 ordwr of the sisters birth, if nothing else from it. Attina always struck me as the oldest (It's the big crown ;) and having her be the first married just makes sense.
There was a short comic where Ariel helped stop Ursula from ruining Attina's wedding to this Prince Eric look alike (like seriously people you didn't even try xD also why are the merfolk wearing clothes under water??)
(Also sorry this is as good as the quality gets for this pic its very zoomed in)
Tumblr media
However shockingly we actually see the two together in the end of The Little Mermaid 2 (or at least two people who look shockingly like them) so yeah, I'll take Attina being married at the time of the first movie as canon for the DisneyVerse.
Tumblr media
Actually it makes way more sense for at least a few of Ariel's older sisters to already be married off or seriously involved at the time of the first movie. We'll just say their significant others are off screen xD

On a much brighter and lighter topic!
I originally wanted to make this post on my side-blog about fairytales, but I'll do it here thanks to having a wider audience. Because I have not seen people talk about this when I think it should?
I want to talk about Disney's Enchanted and its sequel, Disenchanted.
Tumblr media
So we all know that Enchanted is Disney's self-homage and parody of all the classical Disney fairytale movies. It is the quintessential boil down and humoristic summary of Snow-White, and Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty, and the Little Mermaid, and so forth and so on... It is all their tropes and archetypes and the like. That has been well established, well analyzed, well discussed upon.
Tumblr media
But when it comes to Disenchanted, Enchanted's sequel, there is I think something people completely missed... Haven't you noticed that this movie had the quintessential feel of a "Disney sequel"?
Literaly and figuratively. They pull tropes and ideas and concepts from all the Disney sequels, from The Little Mermaid 2 to Cinderella 3. And by extension, when you look at Disenchanted as a whole, you actually get this very unique and distinct feeling of a Disney sequel. This feeling hard to put into words but that you have upon looking at The Lion King II, or Aladdin II, or the 101 Dalmatians II.
Tumblr media
You know the feeling. You know the type of thing I am talking about.
The movie is not as great as the first one and can only be compared badly to it, but it is still a fine and enjoyable product on its own right.
The movie expands the universe set by the original, and yet it feels like this new story is of a much smaller scope than the first.
It explores the consequences and the aftermaths of the first movie, usually through a "next generation".
It feels weird somehow. Not "uncomfortable" weird, but somewhere between "funny" weird and "bizarre" weird.
Or is it just me? Whereas Enchanted is the essence of typical Disney "classics"... Disenchanted really managed to recreate and sum up perfectly the feel of a "Disney sequel".

My prediction for Zootopia 2
So as I’ve mentioned in a previous post, there’s an interesting Wildehopps dynamic where Judy is more case-focused while Nick prioritizes safety, which I can maybe see being used for conflict in the next movie. (Cuz if there’s going to be conflict, it needs to be done right for development and not just for the sake of having characters argue…please take notes, Disney)
I imagine the movie starting out with the two of them working flawlessly. They know just how to take down criminals together without exchanging a word. Then one day they’re given a simple interrogation case that quickly escalates and long story short Judy ends up getting hurt. Nick rushes to help her, and she urges him to go after the criminal. He hesitates, but he doesn’t relent and ends up taking her to a first aid kit, frantically bandages her wound, then pursues the criminal along with backup. But by then it’s too late, the culprit is nowhere to be found. At first Judy’s a little frustrated, but she can’t be too mad at him for saving her. Chief Bogo, however, will be furious, and while he is sympathetic about the specific situation they were in, there’s still a dangerous mastermind on the loose. (And then there’s some kind of lecture about balancing work and safety of your partner, etc etc)
Throughout the movie there’s a sort of back-and-forth between “which is more important”, as well as some budding romance because yes. And then at some point the two are forcibly separated by The Bad Guys™️ and are forced to find a way back to each other. However these mammals have done their research. They didn’t just choose two random cops to kidnap for fun. They know who Judy and Nick are and plan to use their dependency on each other against them. For the sake of evil plot and angst the Bad People demand that Judy tell them some Important Information about whatever and when she refuses, they pull the old “if you don’t give us what we want you can say goodbye to your partner”. Naturally Judy’s intimidated by the threat, but she knows they’re just saying it to get in her head. Never let them see that they get to you, after all.
It isn’t until The Big Fight when she finds out they were not bluffing, as when she refuses again one of them ends up attacking Nick right in front of her. She frantically rushes to his side, trying not to panic as she hears the cruel words of their captors; “We warned you. It’s sad, isn’t it? Having to choose between our missions and the ones we love most? We fail either way. That’s why you’re better off working alone”
Then some kind of trap is activated in the room, with limited time until it sets off, and the Bad Bitches escape leaving the two to die tragically. Judy tries to push Nick up, but his injuries are more fatal than they appeared. He can’t move, he knows this. He urges Judy to leave while she can, to stop the criminals and return home safely. And it’s at this point Judy finally understands his point of view. If the roles were reversed he would be carrying her to safety, regardless of the matter at hand. She can’t leave him. She won’t leave him. So she helplessly begins dragging him with all her strength, forcing back tears as there’s a tiny voice in the back of her mind telling her it’s pointless and that they’ll never make it out alive together. (Insert some kind of dramatic “I can’t leave you! I love you!” scene here or something)
Somehow they’d make it out obviously, and they’d have some kind of heart-to-heart moment while he’s getting treated for his injuries. Ultimately they decide that no matter what happens from that point that they’ll put their fears aside and work together to take down the Big Bad, because that’s what they’ve always done.

Let's jazz things up a little....
BRING OUT YOUR SALT LET'S GOOOOOOOO 🧂👀👀👀
(Yes, I included some popular/beloved sequels here, not because I dislike them - hell, I downright love a couple! - but because these are literally ALL of the "Disney Princess" sequels that came out in the 90s and early 2000s. Don't @ me, just have fun voting lol)
Disclaimer: With these sequel polls, I will NOT include ones from the Walt Disney Animation Studios, which are as of June 1, 2023: The Rescuers Down Under, Fantasia 2000, Ralph Breaks the Internet, and Frozen 2.
Have fun voting and try not to start any fights over your personal faves! 😘

The way movies like Disenchanted (2022) and Wish (2023) have been welcomed by the Disney fandom makes it more and more evident those people don’t actually want what they claim they do:
They don’t want 2D animation;
They don’t want experimental animation techniques;
They don’t want simpler plots;
They don’t want old fashioned villains;
They probably wouldn’t want a love story if Disney gave them one because it’s not between the characters they want (people are literally rioting already because they want Helsa in Frozen III and IV)
Everything they want from Disney movies is for them to make them feel the same joy and wonder they felt while watching them at five years old. Otherwise, why would the entire 90s generation (me included) love Disney sequels to pieces although they’re so cheaply made?
But the thing is, that joy is never coming back. And even though you would never admit it to yourself, you actually dig the layered, Marvel-style plots and sharp, computer-made graphics that even animated movies have adopted nowadays. That’s why Miles Morales’ Spider-Man saga and TV shows like Arcane are being so successful now. The only reason why you think you want to bring back the elements I mentioned above is nostalgia. But the truth is that you don’t like them that much, and you would rather watch movies with Marvel-style plots and sharp, computer-made graphics, than whatever you used to enjoy in your childhood. And that’s okay!
But please, don’t cry outrage when a movie that’s actually different gets released. And most importantly, don’t pester people who like that movie with what you wanted it to be.
Sincerely.

I love the sequel trilogy, but I wish that they had done more with Kylo/Ben’s relationship to his parents. When I watched the movies, I always thought that was his most compelling arc. His guilt over killing his father, the strained relationship with his mother and her belief that he is not beyond redemption! I wanted so much more of that. I think this is because so much of his storyline in TFA was about Han Solo, and the interactions with Rey almost seemed to be way more about Han than any romantic tension they had. (“And Han Solo. You feel like he's the father you never had. He would have disappointed you.” Anyone?) This seems to be a case where Hollywood’s tendency to emphasize romantic relationships over all other relationships did a real disservice to a character.
