actually the show is doing an incredible job of portraying percy because in every episode he’s meant to seem stupid because this is stuff annabeth and grover know already “can i ask a dumb question” but everything he says is incredibly valid and makes sense and i. something about how the fandom sees percy vs now he really is. he really is so smart.

Yeah, I know many people have talked about this already but I need to say it as well before I explode.
I love visually seeing how the campers are all age accurately cast. In the books, it didn't hit me as hard because it was something I read when I myself was around 12. Even upon rereading I just go back to my 12-year-old body and the age is just this textual evidence that I KNOW exists but it doesn't truly impact me as much as it really should.
Tumblr media
With this still, though, it's clearly visible how young all of them are. And it's scary. It's just the teaser trailer and it's already scary to think just how tiny and innocent they are, and how many hardships they have to go through at such a tender age.
But the scariest part about the scary part?
Tumblr media
The youngest campers. That little girl (sorry for the bad quality) who's sitting right behind the girl with glasses looks around 7-8 at most. She's so small, so tiny, and yet she's at a camp where she has to learn how to survive and fight off monsters 100 times her size.
And the essence of all this is exactly what the movies failed to capture. The movies had a mostly adult cast, with zero ideas of what they were doing with the plot and characterization that could make the movies as impactful as the books, and focused a little too much on getting their Percabeth ship going, with absolutely no buildup of trust or slowly falling for each other or anything.
But with this show, I'm sure it'll be a lot more emotional and real because while it is sad that they're all just little kids, it's also a reflection of reality. Not every kid has a wonderful life; we all have to fight our own monsters no matter how young we may be, because life doesn't wait to see how old you are to throw problems at you. It doesn't have an age limit for trauma and hardships. The younger you are, the harder it impacts your life, and them being this small has a much more impactful meaning to it than watching almost adults go through the same problems that often get solved in an underwhelming manner.

the thing about fashion is that you have to hold yourself with confidence for it to be successful. you can be wearing the whackiest, ugliest, tackiest fucking outfit imaginable and if you’re holding yourself like you think you’re hot shit, it’s hot couture, it’s Paris fashion week. which is part of the problem with the “is it fashion or is she just skinny?” type videos where a fat woman will reconstruct fits from instagram and come on camera shyly in low rise jeans with part of her thong showing, holding herself like ‘isn’t this outfit ridiculous, don’t I look stupid?’ no! you don’t, or you wouldn’t if you stood up straight and walked like you just saved puppies from a burning building in front of your crush.
this is a truth gender nonconforming people understand intrinsically, you liking what you wear is the most important part of wearing it, feeling sexy and confident even if society doesn’t agree, even if you are insecure in what you’re wearing, faking it until you make it, committing and doubling down, that’s what makes art. that’s a big part of fashion in the LGBT community, why campy themes are so ingrained in our fashion and art.
some people like what they’re wearing because it’s what’s trending, because it’s what everyone else is wearing and it makes them feel connected and part of the in-crowd. some people like what they’re wearing because it’s the opposite of what is trending, because it sets them apart. some people wear only what they personally like, trends be damned. some people don’t care what they wear, throw on the first outfit they grab in the morning because they don’t care what they look at and get their confidence makes them look good.
society gives thin conventionally attractive gender-conforming where women a feedback loop of positivity that gives them the confidence to choose outfits we’d never wear. that doesn’t mean those outfits are inherently bad, even if they’re understated or poorly fitting or not up to our taste.

"My heart's far, far away." - "Home" (Beauty and the Beast) "Cause my heart is wherever you are." - "Can I Have This Dance?" (High School Musical 3: Senior Year)
"One of the wonderful things about being a producing/director on a series is that you get to tell a story over time. In the image above (season 2) the steadycam move caught Ricky in the doorway for a fraction of a moment as Gina in the foreground sheds a tear for him. In the image below (season 4) Ricky and Gina, now dance together in the same angle and framing. As a director, I really like book ends and used blocking as a way of calling back to moments without directly referencing them." - Kimberly McCullough (director of 2x06, "Yes, And," and 4x03, "A Star is Reborn")

i love that the show gives reasons for the trio to wind up in places they shouldn't be in---because kids are smart, a lot of times smarter than adults because they're not tempted by dr*gs and alc*hol and s*x. plus these kids have pretty much been raised to be cautious and fearful. it is very twelve-year-old and very ADHD of them to get distracted by the lotus hotel and the arch like in the books, but it's also very twelve-year-old and very ADHD of them to be super anxious about the quest working out and not letting themselves get easily distracted

But the real root of the problem seems to be that Disney higher-ups see these characters as only dollar signs, so they gave a visionary and talented creator the bare minimum amount of time and resources to continue their stories. The show didn’t need to be good to sell merchandise, especially when the characters were already familiar to viewers, similar to how the Marvel Cinematic Universe has apparently been cutting key elements of the TV production process to churn out its many IP-stretching series. Here lies the bittersweet truth of Ahsoka — this eight-episode streaming series with one writer, the corporate pressure to maintain a streaming service’s profitability, and the responsibility of launching the future direction of the entire franchise, was doomed from the start. Whether it continues with another season, a movie, or not at all, Ahsoka is another victim of late-stage capitalism’s path of destruction through Hollywood, decimating incredible storytelling potential in its wake. Even Filoni’s considerable talent, much like that of J.J. Abrams, Rian Johnson, or any of the gifted screenwriters and directors these studios bring on for both major franchises and original prestige projects, can’t stand up to Hollywood’s intellectual property machine turning almost everything into passable “content,” good enough for merchandising and driving subscriptions. A few genuinely wonderful projects, like Andor, and compelling characters and concepts, like the Mandalorian, miraculously slip through the cracks to keep audiences interested, but this IP-squeezing race to the bottom continues. Let’s just hope that the recent gains by the WGA and rise in unionization across the industry can prevent it from continuing before more beloved characters are put through the wringer.
i wrote this piece about ahsoka, a show i'm so so sad didn't live up to it's potential, and what it says about the entertainment industry right now. i am not a total hater, and there really were things to love about this show, but i needed to get out how disappointing it all feels, and hopefully i got that across. thanks for reading!
