This is not my usual content, but I just finished Disenchanted, the new Enchanted sequel, and I was so so so disappointed with it and as someone who loves the original I want to express that.
Enchanted was a childhood classic for me, one of my favorite movies it was so good and clever, and the songs were so good. This just feels like a sad knock-off.
The most disappointing thing to me though was the animated segments that were meant to mimic the original. It looked phenomenally bad, and that is either due to a limited budget or no time for the animators, so please don't blame the animators for this. The heads of this project just did not care to make these parts look good and it shows.
Just save your time, watch the original again if you want that nostalgia. Don't watch Disenchanted.

The new 2023 Haunted Mansion was Awesome!!! It was so funny! My family and I were having a great time in the theater.
And it was Spooky! I loved the genuine jumpscares I had. Don't get me wrong I wasn't out of my wits terrified. But the ghosts designs were right up my alley. And I genuinely jumped or gasped when some of the ghosts appeared, or lunged at the living. I felt like I was in the Haunted Mansion ride when the cart suddenly makes a sharp turn and you get a jolt of adrenaline. I LOVE that I felt that way. It was so cool that the movie made me feel like I was on a wonderful Disney ride.
Tumblr media
!!!!SPOILERS!!!!SPOILERS!!!!SPOILERS!!!!
The set was amazing, and the costumes were stunning. And the ART! All the paintings on the wall being exactly how they usually are, and the police sketch! It was a perfect touch!
And the background lore of the Mansion was perfect. I love that they gave a different version of events then the 2003 Haunted Mansion. Don't get me wrong I love the first Haunted Mansion. It will always be beloved to me, because of how much I watched and enjoyed the movie growing up. But the two movies other then the setting really aren't comparable. The 2003 version is about a family struggling to appreciate eachother. The parents don't have time for eachother or their kids. And its only when the ghosts threaten to tear their family apart do they realize what they have. The 2023 story is all about already losing people. And how the living is struggling to move on, much like the ghosts. Both are trapped in a world of grief and are fighting for peace. I know that Gracey loosing his beloved was also a part of the original film, but it was really focused on now.
All in all giving us a fresh story with no heavy connection with the previous one is awesome. This new Haunted Mansion isn't just recycling, it's given us something new, but with a warm familiar feeling. I am so glad that this movie really holds its own.
Disney has had a bad habit of taking a story and recreating the same tale with the same heros and the same outcome. These movies just feel like something old, and bland. They lack the magic and charm that the originals had. But this story had different heros, a different Villan. And every bit as charming and lively as a Disney Tale should be. Overall it felt like a beautiful addition to a wonderful world.
And I can't forget how wonderfully sweet it is. It is jam packed with grief. The actors really know how to show their characters pain. And it shows healing. The characters acknowledge their grief, confront it, learn that they arent alone, and how to live again and find friendship and family. I loved every character, and they were all played to perfection.
I am extremely delighted with this movie and it's definitely a movie I will watch again and again. Every spooky season, and on those days that I just want something fun and good.

I do not think we have ever before had a Disney live action redux, as much debated about as “The Little Mermaid”.
Ariel has always been my favourite princess, mostly because of her story - that she’s a dreamer, a risk taker, and her longing to be a “part of that world” moves me on a deep emotional level. What she looks like (ethnicity, hair or skin colour, waist size) never mattered to me. She’s Ariel because of THAT story and THAT message. Even we, as human beings (not fantasy mermaids), are made up of OUR stories (not our skin colour, not our appearance, outer shell or size).
So I think it is sad that people fail to see that THAT is the message of “The Little Mermaid”. It is about acceptance. It is about breaking boundaries between worlds. It is about allowing someone to just be - to listen to WHO THEY ARE INSIDE, and not restrict another to a specific zone just because of “how they look” (fins or feet, black or white)…
If you still fail to see beyond Ariel’s appearance, then you never truly understand Ariel or the story or the message and everything this beautiful tale stands for.

The new Little Mermaid movie is gonna be so bad but so good 🥲. As it’s own movie, it’ll be great, everyone will love it. As a live action version of the original little mermaid, it’s gonna be shit and everyone’s going to hate it.
It’s like the Jumanji movies, the original, a masterpiece, the so called sequel with The Rock? As it’s own movie it’s great, but it’s not Jumanji and I will never count it as a sequel, it is its own movie, just like this little mermaid is gonna be.
Anyways here’s a rant of what we know so far ♥️
Y’all can’t tell me not only did you make King Tritan a manwh*re and all his kids different ethnicities, but you renamed them. So fine, ignoring that all of his daughters have different mothers, why did you rename them? Like now you’re overcompensating on “inclusion”. It was one thing to cast Halle Bailey, I love her and her acting, her voice is amazing, but if they did a live action of The Princess and The Frog and cast someone like Blake Lively or Anna Kendrick as Tiana? That wouldn’t be considered inclusion. Why do black actors and actress have to settle for being an after thought and getting the leftovers of white characters? Why not create new characters of colour? We still only have one black princess, so let’s be real, they’re not being inclusive, they’re just trying to make it look like they are.
They say this is a live action remake, and just like Mulan, it’s not. It’s a whole new movie. The live actions of Cinderella, and Beauty and The Beast, stuck to the original movie, those were live action remakes. Aladdin was close, but they still changed the story quite a bit.

Elemental is one of the best animated films I've seen in a long time. The animation is beautiful and mesmerizing like a explosion color every second I love the story line and the characters. it's one of those movies I wish I could watch it for the first time, it was so good I can't wait to see it again

Me about halfway through watching Disenchanted:
"I bet $10 that at the end of the film everything is going to go terribly wrong and Morgan will try to go to the ball but evil Giselle will stop her and Morgan will end up going to try and save everything and she'll use the wand because she actually is a true daughter of Andolasia and everything will be fine."
The end of Disenchanted:
everything goes terribly wrong and Morgan tries to go to the ball but evil Giselle stops her and Morgan ends up going to try and save everything and she uses the wand because she actually is a true daughter of Andolasia and everything is fine.
WHERE IS MY $10

Wish
Okay, so yesterday, as per my tradition on Black Friday, I went to see Wish. I typically try to avoid spoilers or reviews before seeing the movie myself, but that was kind of difficult this time because people seem to have a lot of strong opinions about this movie.
I don't think my opinions are that strong, but I do have them.
Spoilers below
Firstly, I would like to say that my cousin took her eight-year-old to see the movie, as well. I live in New York and they live in Texas, so we couldn't see it together. My little cousin (the 8yo) loved it. She loves animals, so the part where all the animals start speaking was the best part for her. She also really liked all the characters and all the bright colors. So it gets her stamp of approval, which is - to me - probably the most important part. Because this IS a movie for kids. The kids that surrounded my friend and I in the theater also seemed to like it.
So there's that.
Secondly, I didn't hate the movie. The storyline was solid. It had the classic Disney formula of "character wants something. character encounters a problem. character tries to fix problem. everything gets worse. character calls on friends to help. antagonist finds temporary victory. character and friends come together to defeat antagonist. happily ever after" that most kids' movies have.
I honestly don't think that it was "miscast" exactly, but they could have chosen different actors and it might have been more enjoyable. I do like Ariana DeBose and Chris Pine and I believe they did a decent job. Ariana is a Broadway girl and an Oscar winner for a movie musical, so obviously she can sing. Chris Pine has a good, solid voice, BUT the music in this movie was lacking. I agree with that criticism. I am not sure where they went wrong, but I am certain that it is more the company's fault than the people who wrote the music. The composers can only do so much when Disney is bossing them around. I think there also may have been an issue at my movie theater because the voices were so low that my hearing impaired ass was STRUGGLING to make out what they were saying half the time (did anybody else experience this?), but my cousin said she could hear everything just fine. idk.
I feel like this movie was made solely to make as many references to other Disney movies as they possibly could. Like they had Peter Pan, Asha is obviously Cinderella's Fairy Godmother, the goat speaks about making Zootopia, the king becomes the Mirror on the Wall, and Asha's friends are LITERALLY the seven dwarves. There are probably a lot more references that I didn't catch (because I couldn't hear SHIT), but this felt like a money grab.
And it was short! It was the standard 90 minute Disney movie, but DAMN. There was no short before the movie, which I found odd, and there was very little action. The musical numbers seemed out of place and more like those parodies of musicals where somebody will be speaking normally and then the next person just randomly starts singing. Like in the Central Park scene in Enchanted, but without the comedy of Patrick Dempsey's WTF face.
One thing I really enjoyed, however, was Star. The star was THE BEST CHARACTER in the entire movie. It had no lines, but it had a ton of personality, and it was fucking FUNNY. All it wanted to do throughout the movie was grant wishes and/or set them free for the people who made them. It hated the king, for obvious reasons, and how he wanted to possess all the wishes and keep them for his own selfish reasons. That star was one of the redeeming factors of the movie, but it couldn't have made that much of a different in the grand scheme of things, unfortunately. The movie still just...fell flat.
The king was also an interesting character (I cannot recall his name, nor do I care about him in the very least). He, like most major Disney villains, was a narcissistic asshole. He feeds the kingdom a story about wanting to grant their wishes and make them all happy, but he will not grant wishes if there's even the remote possibility of himself getting dethroned. There's a plot line in the movie about Asha's grandfather (who is 100yo btw) wanting to finally get his wish granted and when she asks him if that can happen, he looks at the wish (gramps playing guitar to a group of people, wishing to "inspire the next generation") and says that it's too dangerous because "what does he want to inspire them to do? rise up against me?" which is the BIGGEST REACH like???? He's so paranoid about people wanting to dethrone him even though literally everybody loves him and tells him constantly how much they love him until he shows his face in the last half hour of the movie. He even has his wife fooled.
But also, he is like a caricature of a narcissistic villain. He has very few redeeming qualities, if any. We don't have enough specific history from him to know what kind of childhood trauma he's dealing with or what is really driving him. He makes a comment that he 'lost my entire family' but not how or what it has to do with the fact that he's the only one allowed to use magic. He has a dark magic book for some reason, which ultimately leads to his villain arc. He descends into madness so quickly, too. Like one day he is this loving, lovable, generous king and then LITERALLY IN LESS THAN 24HR he is evil and consuming all the wishes, like????????? It just moves so quickly. I don't understand it.
Usually, the villains we see in Disney movies are already obviously evil, even when they're trying to hide it. Hans is one of the exceptions, but this king wasn't like Hans. They show us in the previews and the promotional material for the movie that this king is going to be evil. I feel like if we got a Hans-like reveal, then it would hold a lot more punch. But I guess that's the one reference Disney was unwilling to make because then they couldn't have shown off their sub-par, catchy villain tune. It's a shame, really.
Lastly, I am not against Asha being revealed as the "Fairy Godmother" because honestly that would have been a cool reference...if that was the only reference they made. But, like I said, they just did too much with this film. The end sequence even looks like the beginning sequence of all Disney films since Cinderella (with the arch going over the castle and all the fireworks.)
I was really excited when this film was first announced because I love Ariana DeBose and I was excited for another Latina princess (even though she and Mirabel are not technically princesses) to have her own movie, but it just fell so flat.
A lot of people have blamed Lin-Manuel Miranda for the pop music, but he had no part in this film. If he had, maybe the music would have at least been more....seasoned? idk
I give this movie a 4/10 overall. Disappointing, but not entirely bad.

Why Cars 2 is a Cinematic Masterpiece
Tumblr media
The beginning movie does a great job establishing the tone of movie; seeing the blue car spy on the evil mafia cars as he just barely escapes with his life shows how this will be easily the darkest Disney movie since Hunchback and the rest of the movie follows through on this. When Toe Maitor is recruited as a spy and then him & the blue car are chased by the evil cars they use explosions! They almost died that’s so fucking crazy! Fortunately, there’s a funny scene later on where Toe Maitor has to go pee and it helps release the tension, since I’ve already proven this is a very intense movie.
Making Toe Maitor more of main character was a good move because of how his funny moments help us, the audience, not be so stressed out for the entire movie worrying if our dear heroes will survive this brutal, dystopian world; everyone wants them dead and the film does a great job showing how they struggle to be able to trust and confide in anyone in a world that’s actively rooting against them. The movie also has a great subversion of expectations with how we expect Lighting McQueer to be the main character, but it’s actually Toe Maitor! When that plot twist hit me in theaters, I lost my shit and was screaming! They then kicked me out, but I later bought the movie on DVD to finish this masterpiece, and it was worth the wait!
Speaking of Lighting, his subplot is that he wants to win a race, but this time terrorist cars are threatening to blow him up with a bomb on him, killing him! Now you see how scary and intense Cars 2 is? This obviously makes Toe want to save his forbidden lover (it’s subtext btw) and so he becomes a spy! A spy! I was cheering for him on my couch knowing he has made it in life; tears of joy were rolling down my face. Anyway, by the end of the movie he does succeed by using his wits and in a cut scene found exclusively on the Blu Ray version, I got to see it thanks to me having to buy the DVD, Toe and Lightning make out in front of everyone as the screen fades to black and the movie ends. That ending also made me cry. Oh yeah and also the blue and purple cars they won too I guess but they were kinda lame; they’re easily the weakest part and the only actual bad thing about the movie. Other than that, this is an easy 9.5/10. If more Pixar films were like this, it would be back to making absolute masterpieces.
Conclusion:
Cars 2 is an almost perfect masterpiece with only one minor flaw.

I love The Little Mermaid so much. 😭😭😭
Plot - 9/10
-Love Ariel’s coming of age, journey-ing to be a human arc. Her transition from non-human to human was treated w respect without dissing her origins. Which was consistent with the original classic as well. Love the mermaid tears arc. Love the father-daughter bond. The romance was fucking impeccable.
Pacing - 9/10
-very straight to the point, fleshed out world with just the right amount of tasteful exposition.
Characters - 9/10
-Ariel and Eric were perfection I won’t stand for slander. Anyone who’s saying Ariel transitioned for a man should be given the right smack. Did y’all not see her consistent pining was about the human world, wanting to be human and her thirst to know more and explore it all?! Her love for Eric was a separate thing thats only theirs!! She takes what she wants while acknowledging the consequences! She took a stand and fought not just because Eric was in danger but for her dad!!
Eric is the best Disney Prince. I have earned Wisdom. Live action Eric gave me best hindsight that Eric’s personality was already there in the original film. Just fleshed out now match Ariel. Those soulful eyes, that soulful heart that may make him look like a flighty royal to outsiders but it’s a consistent fact that besides his thirst for knowledge is a steady heart that wants to do his best for his country. Love that guy.
Triton. My god I think I’d gladly drown in Triton’s voice ngl. I was like can it get any lower?! Them: Yes. But fr love his arc of putting aside his prejudices for his daughter’s happiness in the end. Like that’s a bare minimum some fathers just can’t even manage to reach sometimes.
*insert fun fact here of consistently calling him daddy instead of his name NOT FOR REASONS YOU THINK (or maybe it is who knows) but because I keep mispronouncing Triton and trident. I know, i know 😭
Ursula. That overly dramatic witch. So camp. Love that for her. I have trouble listening to Melissa’s enunciation sometimes but it’s cool. She’s a functional antagonist.
The sentient animal friend: their good. Best wing(heh)men u could ever ask more. Sebastian’s journey from Yes man to “Hm. Actually.” was pretty good as before.
The romance and character parallels of Ariel and Eric happened because of Max. Everybody say thank you to Max. He’s a good boi. 🐶
Casting - 10/10
Great job as far as I can tell.
Cinematography - 9/10
-i have to squint sometimes but the visuals are pretty effing stunning.
Scoring - 7.5/10
-can never beat the classics, but I love the range of emotions the characters put into it. And the new songs SLAP. But minus points for the Scuttlebutt song that was so bad, sorry I can’t even call it Mid. That song was the official bathroom break for me.
Overall: 8.5/10 for me. It was satisfying!
