The weight of the ring box was heavy in Loki’s jacket pocket. He was currently seated across from you at Le Jules Verne, one of the best restaurants the city of Paris had to offer. You’d just finished dessert, and he was taking the last sips of his wine. Unfortunately, it was the Midgardian kind, so it did not quite take the edge off of his nerves as he had been hoping.
“Merci,” he said to the waiter that brought him the check.
“So, after this we’re going to go to the top of the tower, right?” you asked, eyes wide with anticipation. “And then I’m thinking we stop at that little bakery near our hotel. You know, the one that has those delicious macarons. And then tomorrow is our last day here. Can you believe it? I feel like it went so fast.”
“Indeed, my darling, it sounds like a wonderful plan. As for when our last day is, we could always take more time if that is what you desire.”
“I’m pretty sure Fury would kill us.”
“Well, I would like to see him try. You forget, I am a god.”
You laughed as the waiter came back to collect the check. A few minutes later, you and Loki were on your way to the top of the Eiffel Tower, hand in hand, both of you smiling uncontrollably. Reaching your destination, you stood by the railing and looked out over the beautiful city, talking about everything and nothing. Eventually, the conversation fizzled out, and you fell into silence, the kind that is just as meaningful as talking. You rested your head on Loki’s shoulder, and his thumb rubbed circles onto the back of your hand, still clasped together with his. Your beauty in the moonlight and the smile on your face made his heart swell with love for you. There was no doubt in his mind that he was making the right move. Loki said your name and gently pulled away from you.
“What is it?” you asked.
“There’s something I have been wanting to say for a long time now. Do you remember what you said to me three years ago today?”
“Sure I do. It was the night of our first date. You’d been so nervous you hardly said anything, and I thought you’d just said yes to me out of pity. When I asked you about it, though, you told me that it was because you were unworthy, a monster. Then I told you that you were no monster, that it’s all perspective, and the true monsters would never admit themselves one. The fact that you thought yourself so unworthy actually proved the opposite. You were beautiful then Loki. You’re still beautiful now. Why do you ask?”
“Because that was the day I knew I wanted to marry you.”
He got down on one knee and brought out the box, popping it open to reveal a beautiful ring. You let out an audible gasp, your hands flying up to cover your mouth. You stammered his name, trying to find the words to describe what you were feeling right now. For a brief second, you wondered if this was a dream, if you’d fallen asleep resting against Loki. Maybe he had teleported you back to the hotel and was currently tucking you in, placing a kiss to your forehead before climbing in beside you. But no, his eyes were too vivid, that hard to place color that never was exactly as sharp in your dreams. This was real. This was the happiest day of your life.
“Darling,” he began, “I cannot properly express how much I love you. You are the air I breathe. My very heart, that steady beat you provide giving me life. I do not know how else to say it except to call you my everything. I want to devote myself to you, unite our lives forever. My dearest darling, will you do me the incredible honor of marrying me?”
“I- Loki, of course I will,” you said, happy tears threatening to spill from your eyes. “Yes, of course. Nothing in this world could ever make me happier.”
Arising from his position on the floor, Loki slid the ring onto your finger. You pulled him in for a kiss, his arms wrapping around your waist and yours behind his neck. After breaking apart, you admired the ring and released a dreamy sigh.
“It’s perfect, Loki. Let’s take a picture so we always remem-”
Your sentence cut off abruptly, and you sucked in a sharp breath, your entire body going stiff as you looked at the screen of your phone. You typed something into it, hands now shaking. A second later, it rang. Pressing accept, you raised it to your ear.
“Please tell me it’s not true,” you whispered to whoever was on the other end.
Loki strained, trying to hear what was being said. He could make out a few of the words your mother’s hysterical voice uttered. Accident... Brother... Dying. You were crying now, though it was no longer from joy. A few moments later, you hung up. Your hand fell to your side, and Loki was quick to crush your body against his in a hug.
“I’m so sorry, Loki,” you said. “We have to go. Now. I have to book a flight. Quick. I- I have to.”
Loki shushed you as silent sobs wracked your body. “No need to apologize, darling. Just tell me where you need to go.”
You numbly rattled off the address of the hospital your brother had been brought to. Still holding you tight, Loki instantly transported you there, before even your parents could arrive. Minutes later, they came rushing in, and you and your mother hugged each other, becoming one sobbing mess.
“Loki,” your father greeted, sounding more dead than alive.
“Sir, I am sorry to hear the news,” he solemnly replied, giving his hand a firm shake. “Please, let me know if there is anything I can do.”
All he was met with was a small nod of the head from your father who was too close to tears to choke anything else out. Eventually, you sat down in the waiting room, your tears spent for the moment. It was still unclear what exactly had happened, you just knew that there had been a bad car crash. Your brother was in fatal condition, barely hanging on to life. The doctors were doing everything they could, but things were looking bleak.
“Darling, look at me,” Loki gently ordered, pulling you into his lap. He took your hand and placed a soft kiss to your knuckles. “He will survive; he is a fighter. Your Midgardian doctors are very talented, and I have every faith they will save him. You must not give up hope.”
“He could die, though. They said he’s in a bad condition. I... I don’t know if he’s going to make it, Loki, and I can’t stand that thought.”
“Bad condition, yes, but not dead. He will recover, I am sure of it. Your belief in that can make all the difference. Please, darling, hold on.”
“Ok,” you whispered, trying to be as strong as Loki, your pillar of light in this dark tragedy. “I’ll try.”
The waiting felt like it was lasting forever. You cried in short bursts for the next hour, all the while Loki rubbed comforting patterns on your back. You didn’t know it, but they were runes for protection, comfort, clarity, and love. He kept whispering words in your ear, both Midgardian and Asgardian, trying to make you feel better. The fact that he was there at all helped a great deal.
Finally, just when you thought you couldn’t take the suspense anymore, the doctor came out with an unreadable face. You all held in a breath, fearing the worst but praying for the best.
“He’s alright for now,” the doctor said. “He’s stable for the moment, but we have concerns. He’ll need to stay in the hospital for a while longer.”
Your mother burst out crying again, this time from relief, thanking the doctor profusely. After talking to him for a few more minutes, you were allowed to go back and see your brother. Loki, however, was not yet allowed to visit on account of he wasn’t family.
Settling back down into a waiting room chair, Loki sighed in relief. For all his bold, confident words, he wasn’t all that sure your brother would survive. Thankfully, though, he was fine, and Loki could rest easy knowing your concern would be greatly lessened.
“Hey,” you said a while later, coming back into the waiting area. “You didn’t have to wait here for me. I could have caught a ride with my parents.”
“But the thing is, my darling, I wanted to stay to make sure you were going to be ok. I did have to stay because my heart, my love, tethers me to you. I needed to be here for you.”
“I love you, Loki.”
You cupped his cheek and kissed him sweetly. Moving back, he grabbed your hand and carefully removed your ring. You gave him a quizzical look, but before you could question him, he was getting on one knee, and you began to catch on.
“I cannot imagine my life without you in it,” he said. “Through our triumphs and our failures, our gains and our losses, through all that this world can throw at us, I want to be by your side. Darling, I feel the need to ask you again, so the moment may live in unreserved bliss: Will you marry me?”
“Oh, Loki. Absolutely yes. I can’t imagine living without you, either, and I never want to!”
Once again, he brought the ring to reside on your finger, and you kissed again. Though it was true that not everything was completely perfect, you felt safe and happy. You knew that with Loki, everything would be alright.

“Killian, I think you need to try dating again.”
The man in question raised his eyebrow to his sister-in-law and simply shook his head. “Nope. Thanks, love, but I’m good.”
Elsa pouted. It didn’t have the same effect on him as it did on his older brother. “But Killian—”
“No ‘buts,’” he quickly interrupts, holding up a finger. He puts it down after she glares at it before glaring at him. “Elsa, love, I’m fine. Really.”
“One date,” she insists holding up one finger. And again with the pout. She must think that all Jones men have a weakness against her pout when really, it’s just her husband. He can understand why his brother fell for her almost instantly – Elsa truly is a beauty. With long pale blonde hair, that’s almost always in a braid of some kind, and light blue eyes, she looks almost like a icy queen until you realize that she is just a loving, caring person.
A loving, caring person who can’t stop putting her nose into her brother-in-law’s love life. Why couldn’t he get a sister-in-law who could care less about him, or could care less if he dates? Honestly, Liam had to marry the one woman in the world who cares whether or not Killian Jones has a date on Friday night.
“Killian, please?” she begs. “Belle is a wonderful person, I’m sure—”
“Elsa, I said no.”
She keeps this up for a week.
She pouts.
He finally says yes.
(He might see why his brother is powerless to the pout. But honestly it wasn’t the pout that got him. He just wanted her to stop).
~*~*~*~
Belle is lovely, and charming, and beautiful. She has hazel green eyes, and long brown hair. Her smile is nice, and though he can’t quite place her accent (he’s going to go with Australia, but he could be wrong), he enjoys spending time with her.
“You ever been sailing, love?” he asks as their entrees arrive. He picked out a place not too far from where she works (she’s a librarian), but also close to where his brother works in case he needs to make a quick get-away. He doesn’t.
“No, but I would love to,” she sighs dreamily. “I justI want adventures, you know?”
He does. He smiles and nods. And okay, she’s not the worst person in the world, and he can already see Elsa doing a fist pump in the air, but he’ll let her have this one. Because Belle is…well, she’s something.
And as charmed as he is by her, there’s just something…not there. He would hate to think that it’s a lack of spark, because he doesn’t believe in that kind of thing. He doesn’t. Sparks in a relationship are for people who read too much Nicholas Sparks or think that 10 Things I Hate About You is the best romantic comedy ever created.
(It wasn’t. You’ve Got Mail is the best one he’s seen, and yes, he will fight you on that.)
As they eat dessert (yes, this is going better than he planned), she starts asking him, “Have you read Pride and Prejudice?”
“I think it’s a bit underwhelming, to be honest,” he says as he using his fork to cut the piece of cheesecake. So he doesn’t see her shoulder drop, but he does hear her small, “Oh.”
He shrugs as he says, “I’m just not a fan of Austen. She’s a bit of a bore for me.”
Belle remains friendly enough, but that spark is definitely missing now, and Killian can’t help but wonder if perhaps they weren’t getting along as well as he thought.
But when he drops her off at her apartment building, she lets him walk her to the door and they give a small kiss.
Yeah. No spark.
He’s about to write this one off, when he sees an advertisement for the new Emma movie and asks if she would like to accompany him. “Try to make me an Austen fan, love.”
They go. It’s alright.
Even Belle wasn’t too impressed with it.
“I’ve seen better,” she said as they walk out of the theatre. “There’s a mini series that’s just gorgeous, with Johnny Lee Miller and Romola Garai. That one is good.”
“I’ll take your word for it, love.”
He gives her more of a peck than a kiss. She doesn’t argue.
There’s a book reading at her library and she asks if he wants to go. He kind of does, so he goes. Belle sits next to him as the author is reading their book, and she leans over to whisper something in his ear and his heart doesn’t pound, his blood is not racing, and he has no urge to grab her hand. He smiles and chuckles at her observation and comes to a realization. One that he brings to her attention later that evening.
“Belle, love, I think we need to talk.”
She sighs, like she knew this was coming. “You don’t feel it either, do you?”
Now he sighs. “I’m sorry, love.”
She waves him off. “No, please, don’t beat yourself over it.” She’s quite for a moment before she says, “But I do like you, Killian. Just not like that.”
He chuckles. “I feel the same way.”
She shakes her head slightly before saying, “Can we be friends instead?”
“Besides Elsa, I don’t I’ve ever had a friend that was a girl.”
She gives a playful shrug as she responds, “True something new.”
He laughs. “Okay. Friends.” He holds out his hand, which she takes and they give one big shake.
“Friends.” She turns to put her key in the door before asking, “We should get coffee sometime. You know. As friends.”
Coffee with Belle sounds wonderful, actually. “I’d love that.”
So that’s what they do. Every few weeks, they get a coffee and catch up on their lives.
Elsa, however, is less than thrilled.
“Seriously? It didn’t work out? I could have sworn that you two would have been perfect for each other!” she insists.
“Leave the poor boy alone,” Liam says from the couch, looking over his phone. “Sweetheart, when he’s ready, he’ll date.”
Yeah. That didn’t stop her. Nor does it stop Belle, apparently.
“I agree with Elsa,” she tells him one day after he’s complained that Elsa wants to set him up on another blind date. “I think you do need someone.”
“I don’t need anyone.”
Belle gave a small, sad smile. “I think you do.”
Which is how he ended up on a blind date with a woman named Ariel. She’s friendly, a little too friendly for him, but she also seems a bit…well….
She gets distracted easily. Everything seems to fascinate her, except him, apparently.
Their waiter, Eric, well he certainly has her attention. She checks him out more than she looks Killian in the eye.
He walks her to her car, and doesn’t hear from her again.
“She’s dating Eric,” Belle tells him two weeks later when they both have a chance to rehash that disastrous date.
“Doesn’t surprise me,” he says with no trace of anger or disappointment in his voice. “She really did seem quite taken by him.”
Elsa announces later that week that she knows someone else that Killian will like.
“Please, God no.”
He goes.
Tink is bubbly and funny and sarcastic and he kind of likes her. She’s blonde, tiny, almost like a pixie, and isn’t afraid to show her emotions. They talk throughout their entire meal, and Killian actually wants to take her out again.
But he must have missed a sign or signal or something because he calls and she doesn’t pick up. He asks Elsa if something happened, and she says she that she doesn’t think so.
Oh.
He’s a tad disappointed, but 24 hours later he’s completely over it and ready to move on.
And so is Elsa and Belle, apparently.
“No, I’m determined to get you a girlfriend,” Belle says going through her contacts.
“Belle, please, if you loved me, you would stop this and stop encouraging my sister-in-law.”
“Oh!” she says, looking up from her contact list with her eyes wide. “Of course. Anna!”
Anna. As in Elsa’s younger sister. As in his sister-in-law. As in the girl who literally gave a 15 minutes Maid of Honor’s toast (yes, he timed it.). Anna, who’s sweet, but talks too bloody much for his liking.
“No. Absolutely not. I’m putting my foot down on this one.”
“But Killian—”
“Belle. No.”
She doesn’t suggest it again.
(Except as a joke.)
But when she mentions Mulan, a woman she knows from her gym, she insists. “She’s tough, Killian,” Belle informs him. “She’s not a talker and she doesn’t beat about the bush. You’ll like her.”
As soon as Mulan arrives at the bar (she insisted; he didn’t argue), she informs him, “Look, I’m here because Belle is my friend. But I’m going to be honest. I like her. But in a different way than you do.”
Killian is a little surprised by that announcement, but shrugs before saying, “Fair enough. But listen, I’m hungry and those potato skins look really good. Want to split some appetizers and I’ll tell you how you can get Belle’s attention?”
Honestly, it was the best date that he’s had in a while.
But then, then, he sees her.
It’s about three weeks after his date with Mulan (he didn’t tell Belle why it didn’t work out. He figured that she would realize soon enough) and he’s working at his bar when she walks in.
And as much as he hates romantic comedies (okay, he doesn’t hate them, but he’s trying to make a point) and he thinks they’re cliché, time really does seem to slow down when he notices her across the bar.
With her long blonde hair that grazing the middle of her back, a tight red leather jacket over a dark gray shirt, with even tighter jeans and black boots, Killian thinks his tongue might be on the floor.
She’s meeting a group of friends (and he hates that he likes that it’s all women) before she walks over to the bar. He almost trips over himself to make sure she’s not waiting too long.
“Rum and coke,” she says, “Apple martini, and…” she pauses, looks down, “God, what in hell did Ruby want?” she thinks as she taps her fingers on the bar.
He should be upset that she’s taking up his time, but honestly he just wants to put his chin in his hand and look at her some more, because her eyes are the most beautiful shade of green he has ever seen, and he thinks he suddenly knows why Tom Hanks keep tripping up every time he gets near Meg Ryan.
She looks up at him when she finally remembers, “Oh, right! And a bees knees.” She raises an eyebrow. “Is that a real drink?”
He smirks. “Aye, actually. Made with lemon, honey, and gin. I believe that it was created in the prohibition era, to cover up the fact that people were making illegal drinks at home.”
She shakes her head, but gives a small smile. “Come to a bar, and get a history lesson. Didn’t expect that.”
“Always expect the unexpected,” he grins before getting work on her drinks.
He places them on the bar and she hands over her credit card. He can’t help but take a look at her name.
“We’ll have a tab going all night,” she informed him as she sets the drinks up so she’ll be able to carry them.
“Got it. Swan.”
She rolls her eyes, but otherwise says nothing as she leaves.
If he keeps an eye on her all night, that’s something between him and God.
They don’t order to many more drinks and when she comes to get her card and sigh the receipt, he makes sure that she has a ride home.
She smiles before telling him that the husband of one of her friends is on his way.
He takes a sigh of relief and wonders if he’ll ever see her again as she steps out of the bar.
He doesn’t need to wonder that too long. The next day (Sunday), he walks into the café that he and Belle have come to over the course of the last year and turns bright red when he sees her in the corner reading a book.
He sits facing her (Belle was sitting in the opposite chair when he arrived, he swears he didn’t plan it). His eyes keep looking over at her as she sips her drink and turns the pages of the book so carefully, almost like she caressing the pages.
Okay, so he might be romanticizing her, but he can’t seem to help it. He barely knows her and he’s captivate by her.
(Belle would say “smitten” if she knew. She doesn’t.
Yet.)
He barely hears Belle, his attention going over to Emma (yes, he also remembers her name from the credit card, sue him), until she says, “So, then I realized that I should just pierce my lip and dye my hair.”
Well, that got his attention. His eyes quickly look back at her and see that she’s smirking at him.
“What’s got your attention?” she asks.
He quickly looks down at his coffee cup. “Nothing.”
“Killian,” she warns.
“Belle, trust me. It’s nothing. Just…forget it.”
She huffs. “I can’t forget something when I don’t even know what that ‘something’ is!” She turns around to see what’s got his attention, but Emma’s not there and he takes a sigh of relief.
She turns back. “I’m going to figure it out.”
He nods. “You do that. I’m going to go to the bathroom.”
When he comes out, he bumps into someone and without thinking about it, grabs onto their arms to steady them.
Oh. It’s Emma.
“Oh,” she says when she looks at his face. “It’s you.”
And the fact that she kind of, might actually remember him makes his face feel ten degrees warmer and his heart pound a little harder.
“It’s you,” he sighs as he drops his hands.
(Hopefully he didn’t sigh, but he’s pretty sure he did. God damn, if he could smack himself right now, he would).
He clears his throat before commenting, “I see you must have gotten home safely.”
She raises an eyebrow. “You do realize that I don’t live in this café.”
He blushes even harder and looks down. “Right. Of course.”
She laughs. “It’s nice to know that you care, though. Don’t see that in too many bartenders.”
He looks back up at her. God, she’s pretty. “Really?”
She shrugs but gives a small smile. “Don’t know, really. I don’t usually see the bartender the next day.”
He chuckles before rubbing the back of his neck. “I guess…Yeah, I guess you wouldn’t.”
“I know that you know my name from the credit card, but I don’t think I caught your name.”
“Killian. Killian Jones.”
“Well, Killian, Killian, Jones,” she mocks and he laughs, “it’s was nice seeing you again.”
“You as well.”
She smiles as she walks around him to get to the exit.
Killian sits down, a smile on his face refusing to go away, and Belle sits back with her arms crossed and her bottom lip jutting out a little.
“What?”
She shakes her head, but says nothing.
When they come back the next week, Emma arrives after they do, but gets the same table. Killian is once again distracted, but this time Belle watches as a young blonde woman walks past them, and Killian’s eyes won’t stop watching her.
Belle gets an idea.
Killian gets a phone number.
(It happened when she came back to bar that following Friday. He kept smiling at her and she kept grinning at him and when she signed the receipt, there was a napkin with her number on it. He messages her the next day, because as much as he didn’t want to seem overly excited, damn it, he was.)
They message each other constantly, and twice she’s called him and they’ve spoken on the phone for hours (one time he went to work with only 3 hours of sleep in him. He was dead on his feet the entire time, a headache forming in the back of his eyes, but he wouldn’t trade one minute of it.)
He daydreams about kissing her. Kissing her on his couch. Kissing her on the bar. Kissing her in car.
(Honestly, his dreams are way worse. And by that, he means they are way better).
If he didn’t know himself better, he’d think he was half in love with her already. But he can’t ask her out. Because she’s been burnt in the past, and she doesn’t trust easily, and he knows that and understands that and respects that. So he’s going to bid his time, make sure she understands that he’s not going anywhere. That she can trust him. Rely on him. But that kind of thing takes time, and you know what? For her, he’s got all the time in the world.
Belle, however, has other ideas.
“Just one more blind date,” she tells him.
He can’t even think of looking at another woman, let alone go on a date with one. He only wants to go out with Emma. No one else.
Elsa agrees with Belle.
“One more date, Killian. If this one doesn’t work out, I’ll drop the entire thing.”
Belle, more or less, says the same thing.
Killian really doesn’t want to. But they persist. Both of them. At one point, they both came into his bar right before his shift to convince him why he needs to keep dating.
“I don’t want to date!” he wants to shout at them. But then they would ask him why, and he doesn’t want to talk about Emma, and why he can’t date her. Her past is her past, and that is her business. The fact that she told him this much information about herself is already mind-blowing to him. But it’s not his story to tell, so he won’t.
But they won’t shut up about it.
Belle insists. Elsa insists. They actually get his brother in on it too.
He relents. Again, if nothing else than to shut them up.
Belle tells him the girl’s name is Jane Fairfax, and that name sounds somewhat familiar, but he can’t place from where. Maybe she’s mentioned her to Killian before?
Anyway, to say that Killian is not looking forward to this date would be like saying that root canal work is fun. Unfortunately for him, he’s the only one that feels that way. But he’ll go on this date and then he’ll come back to his apartment and message Emma until he literally falls asleep with the phone in his hand (has happened more times that he cares to admit at this point).
Elsa sets it up at Tony’s, which seems a bit extreme for a first date—not to mention a blind first date—but Killian just wants to meet this Jane, eat his food, and get the hell out that he doesn’t care where they are right now.
His date is not there yet, so he goes over to the bar and sits down. He orders a rum straight up because it’s going to be a long night.
“Is this seat taken?”
That voice almost shatters him, because it can’t be…
It just can’t.
It is.
“Emma?” he asks, his eyes wide, slowly getting up from the bar stool (okay, more like sliding down the bar stool), his arms out to make sure she’s really there.
“Hi,” she smirks.
“What are you doing here?”
“I’m here to meet a Frank Churchill. Name sound familiar?”
And it does.  It really does. And he wants to smack himself in the forehead for not picking up on it earlier. Jane Fairfax. Frank Churchill. Those are characters from…
“Emma,” he laughs.
She chuckles too. “Yeah. You’re friend, Belle? Yeah, she contacted me.”
“How?”
“She got me when I was leaving the café one day. You left earlier and she…” Emma looked down, almost embarrassed, and he’s never seen her embarrassed before he wants to hug her so badly. “She told that you want to date me, but you’re too shy.” She looks up and seems unsure. “Is that true?”
His mouth is so dry. His palms are soaked. He nods.
She smiles and shakes her head. “Why didn’t you just ask? I would have said yes.”
“I was worried,” he manages to get out. “I know…about your past, and I just…I wanted to make sure you could trust me.”
She puts her hands on his arms and he can feel it. Sparks. “I do trust you, Killian. I thought you figured that out a while ago.”
He looks down and gives a small chuckle. “I did not.”
She shakes her head as her hands go up his arms to go around his neck. “When Belle approached me, she said that we were going to play a small game on you. She was wondering if you’d figure out who Jane Fairfax is.”
“I didn’t.”
She smiled. “I got that.”
“But I do know who Emma is,” he said leaning closer to her.
She let out a light chuckle that he could feel on his lips and chin. “Really now.”
He mutters, “I much prefer you.”
Her lips are on his after she says, “Thank God.”
~*~*~
Killian releases Elsa from their hug and she turns to her new sister-in-law and gives her a huge hug.
“I’m so glad that you two found each other.”
Killian watches as Mulan goes over to Belle from across the room and places a small kiss on her girlfriend’s cheek before handing her a glass of wine.
He looked down at his wife (his wife) and smiled.
“Me too.”

why are you being like this?
people i’ve met...they’re not like you.  they don’t care.  i don’t matter.
don’t ever think that.  we all matter.
i have to talk about merlin in ‘the hollow queen,’ which is an episode i really do appreciate, despite the fact that it’s part of the enchanted!gwen arc, which isn’t my favorite.
the usual disclaimer applies: i am doing this rewatch because i never finished season 5.  i don’t know how this show ends.  if you are reading this and want to engage with me, please be gentle and avoid spoilers for the last four episodes of this season - i appreciate you all very much for protecting my very late discovery of this show!  <3
and now, to the point, which is this:
merlin looks happier walking around with this “druid” kid in the woods than he ever does in camelot at any other time this season.
and granted, maybe “happy” isn’t quite the right word to use, because "happy” for merlin now doesn’t even come close to what it was even just two seasons ago - but there is this quiet enjoyment to what he’s doing.  there’s a contentment.  he smiles a lot in these scenes, when we can practically count on one hand the number of times he’s smiled in episodes 1 through 7.  he’s smiling when he shows up in the woods and tosses daegal a packet of breakfast, when daegal insists that his arm doesn’t need treating, when they’re sitting on the log talking about gaius, when merlin tosses him the extra apples - even when merlin is showing him how to bandage his leg, after merlin has already been betrayed to morgana and subsequently rescued.
i think there’s something to be said about this, in terms of where merlin is in season 5 vs where he actually wishes he was.  in terms of what he’s doing, and what he actually enjoys doing.  in terms of what he has to be, and what he could be, if he were only given the space.
this episode really makes me think, but i’m not sure i’m going to be able to articulate my thoughts in a way that makes sense.  it’s just - the thing that this episode makes so clear is that - merlin is so obviously gifted at other things than his mandate to ‘make sure arthur doesn’t die,’ and he so obviously has other things that he cares about, things that his “mission” has made it impossible for him to pay enough attention to.  for example - he’s forced to spend all his time and energy protecting a regime that hates him, and there are a lot of downsides to that, but one of them is that he hardly ever gets to connect with his own people.  and merlin so obviously cares about them, like - every time he comes across someone who is the slightest bit like him - freya, little mordred, gilli, this new kid daegal - he feels an automatic sense of responsibility for their safety, an automatic kinship with them.  he wants to help them.  he belongs with them.  but it has always been difficult for him to help them the way he wants to, just by virtue of his situation.  and in season 5, it’s doubly hard, because he just doesn’t feel like it’s within his mandate anymore.
merlin in season 5 has no room in his life for anything besides ‘make sure arthur doesn’t die.’  and even before season 5, his life had been slowly constricting around him, until it couldn’t accommodate anything other than his “destiny.”  but merlin’s commitment to that destiny has stolen so much away from him, so many opportunities - and it’s easy to forget that his life could be more.  that he has more to offer than just ‘make sure arthur doesn’t die.’  merlin forgets it himself - after all, he initially resists going to help daegal’s sister because he just doesn’t feel like he can.  he doesn’t feel like he can fit this into his life, however much he wants to.  he can’t leave arthur alone.
but once he’s out in the woods, he’s so much more...at ease.  he’s happy to sit and patch up this kid’s wounds and talk to him about living in camelot with gaius.  he’s happy to give this kid all of the apples he has in his bag.  he gets a kind of quiet fulfillment from walking this kid through bandaging a leg wound and telling him he’s done it well.  he laughs when this hapless young person walking next to him is snapping his fingers at bugs like, “if i catch this fly, i’m going to eat it.”
this episode makes it so clear that merlin has gifts outside of ‘making sure arthur doesn’t die.’  he’s become a studied healer, for all that he keeps claiming “i’m not a physician.”  he’s a born teacher - an absolute natural.  he has an obvious gift for connecting with people, and he even more obviously loves doing this kind of work - it’s something that comes easily to him.  it makes him happy.  it fulfills him.  this - traveling to help someone who is ill, encouraging a self-hating young kid to discover the good he can do in this world, teaching someone to do something as simple as bandaging a wound - this is work he can feel good about.
i don’t think merlin always feels good about what he’s doing in camelot.
he feels that what he’s doing in camelot is important, yes.  he feels that what he’s doing in camelot is necessary.  he also feels that what he’s doing in camelot is going to end up killing him, one day, and that if his visions are true and things keep proceeding the way they’re going this season, then all his pain and sacrifice might ultimately come to nothing.
merlin loves camelot.  he wants arthur to live.  he wants all his friends to thrive.  but he also wants to be helping people - his people, in particular, and that is the one specific thing his mission in camelot prevents him from doing.  he’s supposed to be doing it by helping arthur, or so people keep telling him, but it doesn’t feel like that, sometimes.  how many years has it been, for so little to have changed?
i don’t think that feels good for him.  it’s the same inherent contradiction he’s faced since he first arrived in camelot and stumbled into uther’s service.  the cognitive dissonance is the same.  he has an externally imposed responsibility to arthur, and an intrinsic desire to help his own people, and he doesn’t feel like he can fulfill both of these demands at the same time.
it’s easy to forget, because of the omnipresence of the legend, and because of the entire premise of the show, that merlin is more than his duty to protect arthur.  that merlin was somebody before he met arthur, somebody who already had thoughts and ideas and imaginings about where he might go in this world, about what his life might be, about what mattered to him.  it’s so easy to forget that he was a whole person long before he came to camelot, that he continues to be a whole person, whether arthur is present or not.
it’s...a hard feeling for me to put into words, but i think the closest i can get to explaining it in this particular episode is with the smallest thing, which is when merlin gives daegal both of the apples, and daegal says “don’t you like them?” and merlin replies, “they’re my favorite.”
it’s such a simple little thing, that, but it just - opens up a door to something you’ve never had reason to think about before.  apples are merlin’s favorite fruit.
and it hits you then, what you normally aren’t expected to remember, that merlin is a whole person, one who exists outside the context of his mission, who existed long before he ever came to camelot, who continues to exist in all his glorious fullness even as “destiny” tries to hammer his existence into this one single shatterpoint.  every tiny thing that makes up a person - all the beautiful, innumerable things that make each and every one of us so impossibly singular and irreplaceable, unique among billions - all of this was in place, long before merlin ever came to camelot.  he has always been somebody, a whole somebody, somebody whose favorite fruit is apples.
merlin is more than his duty to arthur pendragon.  he has always been more than that.  he existed before he met arthur, and he continues to exist now, on his own merits, as richly whole and perfectly individual as any of his compatriots in camelot.  he loves books.  he hates hunting.  he can’t hold his liquor.  he gets hiccups when he eats too fast.  he has a favorite pudding gaius makes for him.  he has a grudge against the royal cook.  he can’t keep his own room clean.  he has always had hopes, dreams, wonderings, plans, things he’s curious about, things he’s afraid of, things more mundane than ‘i might fail at fulfilling my destiny’ - things like ghosts, or leeches, or giant naked rats that eat you alive.  he has always had likes, dislikes, pet peeves, favorite sounds, least-favorite tastes, places he likes to go in the hour before supper when he’s supposed to be doing chores.  he has a favorite memory of ealdor.  he has a side he prefers to sleep on.  he has a leather bracelet he’s worn on the same wrist for years.  these things were true before he came to camelot, and they are still true now, even when the universe doesn’t want him to remember it.
he deserves a life of his own.  he deserves better than a life that only exists for someone else’s sake.  we can see, in this episode especially, how good he is at other things - at teaching, at healing, at connecting with people and helping them feel better about themselves and find their place in the world.  we can see how...therapeutic, it is for him, to be doing work he can believe in.  how much more relaxed he feels, in those brief scenes in the woods, when he is allowed to be out doing what he wants to do, when he is allowed to be in community with his kinfolk, when he isn’t hiding.  when he is allowed to help people - his people - as opposed to drowning himself in the unending, merciless sea of suffering and fear that camelot has become for him.
it isn’t right, that he can’t have a life that makes him happy, a life that honors all of his existence, not just the bits of him that work to make sure arthur doesn’t die.  merlin deserves a life where he can be more than just a ready sacrifice on the altar of albion’s future.
he deserves a life where somebody knows that apples are his favorite fruit.

Tumblr media
Part One // bad reputation (raleigh x mc)
Book:
 Platinum Pairing:
(m raleigh x mc) (Ella Andrews) Rating:
PG-17; sexual themes and language Word Count: 2,273
TAGS: @zodiacsign1 @owleyes374 @lovedrakewalker @averysheart-raleighsdick @cordoniasmost
NOTE: All characters belong to Pixelberry Studios (minus, for the most part, Ella Andrews), I’m just borrowing them. I also do not own the image. Image found on weheartit.
Summary: This takes place in Chapter Seven of Platinum where MC and Raleigh attend the charity gala, and then sneak off to an abandoned building (which later turns out to be Raleigh’s).
DISCLAIMER: Some of what happens in this story is not the same as what happens in the Choices version (example: in this adaptation, what Ella wears is different than what she wears in Choices). This is just a creative adaptation rather than a direct copy. ALSO: I know that they escaped on a motorcycle to the abandoned building, but since Raleigh was drunk in this chapter, it was a no go.
--
A gala. A fucking gala. How had he been convinced to attend a GALA? He pursed his lips and swept his hair back, staring at his reflection in the mirror. He leaned over the sink, his strong biceps holding up his weight against the porcelain. His dark eyes stared back at him, as though awaiting his decision to speak.
"You are Raleigh Carrera," he nearly growled. "You are God's greatest punishment to women, you are every woman's biggest regret, you hate commitment, and you do not have feelings for Ella Andrews." Even he didn't buy it. Shit.
He took another swig of whiskey from his flask. Was he really going to show up drunk to this thing? Abso-fucking-lutely. Right on brand.
--
Ella stood outside the building, posing for pictures and offering autographs to anyone who wanted them. She had nothing better to do as she waited for her very late fake boyfriend, and the summer air was nice and warm against her skin. Letting out a shaky sigh, she gave another smile, blew another kiss, and made her way to the entrance one slow step at a time.
"Ella, how's songwriting going?" "Are you writing any songs about Raleigh?" "Ella, what was your inspiration for the gown?" "Ella, what made you choose to sponsor a wildlife conservation charity?"
I should at least answer this one, she thought, standing a little straighter. "Wildlife conservation has always been important to me. No one seems to focus enough on preserving our world or the life that lives in it. Animals go extinct every day from poaching, several tons of plastic are dumped into our oceans, destroying the life that lives in them. Coral reefs are dying and, in the meantime, we're just letting it happen. There needs to be more awareness on the matter, and so when I happened upon the charity, giving back to it was a no-brainer."
"Can I quote you on that?" Ella nodded briefly, gave one last smile, and decided to head toward the entrance. Just as she made it past the foyer, she ran headfirst into her "lover's" arms. Something about their last day together had diminished her feelings; not by much, though, and especially not when looking at Raleigh's muscular physique in a tuxedo. Her eyes met his, and she cocked her head as she noticed the tint of red in them, and the rose color to his cheeks to match.
"Nice of you to join," she commented wryly, giving him a gentle kiss on the lips. How did something so innocent send waves of electricity shuddering through her body? He seemed to drink in her presence, his eyes trailing down her collarbone to her heels, and back up again. There was something else hidden in those deep brown irises; heat, maybe?
"Sorry, I was occupied," he slurred finally, offering her his arm. "Shall we?" They walked in through the foyer and to the gourmet food stands nestled in the back. Ella filled up a plate of rolls, honey baked ham, and chicken. At the end of the line, she grabbed a heaping cup of coffee along with a glass of water and tugged Raleigh along to find their assigned seats. It was a good thing waitressing had given her such a talent. "God, can you really eat that much?"
She shot him a look and pushed the food over to him, along with the giant mug and large glass. "This is for you. Something tells me you need to sober up."
"Pshh, I'm not-I'm not drunk," he stammered, ending the sentence with a hiccup. He chuckled and not-so-politely shoved the bread into his mouth.
"Ms. Andrews, how lovely to see you!" Ella turned to a smaller, older man in a dark blue suit. She stood and held out her hand, keeping up her poised and etiquette performance. "Pardon me, I'm John Tellar, one of the creators of the project." She did everything to avoid her wince as she felt Raleigh clumsily rise behind her. "Ah, and Mr. Carrera, it is an absolute privilege that you would grace us with your presence."
"That sounds likely," he agreed.
"What he means," she replied, grabbing onto his hand and giving him a warning squeeze. "Is that it is such an honor to have been invited to an event like this. Wildlife conservation is an issue so close to my heart."
"Ah, yes," he replied. "Conservation is a great thing. Anyhow, I believe I see someone waving me over. So lovely to meet you both." He dismissed himself with a grin and made his way through the crowd.
"What the hell was that Carrera?" she asked, spinning on her heel. As she did so, she instantly regretted it, seeing as though there was hardly an inch between them. His cologne seemed to cloud her senses, faltering her angry expression.
"Ella," his voice was calm and patient. "Where do you think they received the money for this event?" She looked around her; down at the marble floors, up at the gold accents, around at the gorgeous tables, also accented with marble and gold. Her eyes widened, realization dawning on her for the first time.
"Oh my God," she whispered. "How much of the proceeds even go to wildlife conservation?"
"Less than 10%," he replied, his voice growing angry once again. "Remember that scandal that came out about me a few months ago? About how I don't support charities or some shit like that? This is why." She swallowed hard. How had she been so stupid? Before she could react, Raleigh began to make his way to the stage, determined. While her nerves remained, she decided that she wasn't going to stop him.
"Hey," his voice boomed into the microphone. Everyone stopped, turning their attention to the slightly swaying Raleigh Carrera. "You all are frauds, you know that? You want to know why I don't contribute to your shitty charities?" Oh, God. "Because you don't fucking care. And...you. You tried to turn my girlfriend into a fraud. But you know what? She does care. She does give a fuck." The way he said girlfriend without hesitation nearly brought Ella's jaw to a drop. But he had had so many fake relationships, he was used to them. Right? Her cheeks flushed as the audience turned to look at her.
"She's too good for you," he said. "She's too good for all of us." He stepped down and stormed out the exit. Ella followed, her thoughts racing. What the hell did that mean? Did he just reveal some trace of his feelings connected for her? She bit down on her cheek and stopped just short of him when she found him leaning up against a tree, his eyes staring at the sunset. Nothing was said for a while until he let in a deep breath. "Ella-I...I'm sorry if I embarrassed you up there."
Instead of saying anything, she walked over and wrapped her arms around his neck, her eyes flickering to his lips. He pulled her in hard and kissed her, his tongue exploring her mouth and then pausing to kiss down her neck and to her chest. She let out a small moan and pulled back, pressing her forehead to his.
"Let's get the hell out of here."
--
"Oh no, this is where you kill me, right?" she laughed as they pulled up to an abandoned building. Everything about it said, "Will fall on top of you and crush your dreams; figuratively and literally." Raleigh grinned and nodded at the limo driver, prompting his leave.
"Nah, I don't plan on killing you. You're my fake girlfriend, after all," he winked. There was that word again. Fake. She tried to hide her disappointment with a small smile. Clearly, it had worked because he walked straight on past her and to the door. The knob refused to move as he attempted to turn it. “Shit.”
Ella stood beside him and fumbled with her hair as she glanced up at the now dusty grey sky. She nudged him and slid a bobby pin in his hand. He cocked an eyebrow. “You’re going to help me break in?” She shrugged.
“Why not? Worst case I’ll just cut my hair short and date a goodie-two-shoes celebrity to boost my image,” she smirked, her thoughts relaying to their first conversation.
“You certainly live up to your reputation as a jerk,” Ella had smiled coyly, tugging her guitar at her side, as though shielding her from this alternate world set before her.
Raleigh flashed that million-dollar smile of his and hooked his thumbs into his back pockets. “So you do know who I am.”
Ella shrugged. “I’ve heard your songs and seen the tabloids. The lightbulb went off after I put your face to the name.” He eyed her curiously and flicked his tongue across his bottom lip. “You’re kind of notorious, Raleigh Carrera.”
“Notorious,” he repeated slowly.
“I’m used to your hair being longer, though.”
He chuckled, “My crisis PR team made me get it cut. Going for a more...responsible image. Do you like it?”
Ella paused before answering. She liked it. She liked it too much. “Pretty sad that you have a PR crisis management team, Carrera.”
She shook herself from the memory and watched as he meticulously unlocked the door with a few turns of the pin. “Got it in one.” Raleigh held out his hand to Ella, and she took it as they rushed up the broken steps and out onto the flat roof. The view stopped her in her tracks.
City lights spanned on for miles, twinkling romantically and winking at all who watched. Cars buzzed by in the distance and the honking of angry cabs echoed out in front of them. Raleigh paused and pulled out a bottle of liquor and two glasses before taking a seat on the roof’s edge. He looked back at her and patted the spot beside him.
“This place is yours, isn’t it?” Ella asked with a smirk, taking the glass in front of her and pounding it down. She winced as it burned down her throat.
“Guilty,” he grinned. She gazed out and sighed blissfully. “I used to come here a lot. You know, for nostalgia purposes, after they plucked me from Peurto Rico to join Sunset Skatepark. Things were...crazy in New York.” He took a swig from the bottle and grimaced. “This was where I’d escape.”
He rubbed the back of his neck, uncomfortably. “I uh...” he paused. “I don’t take anyone up here.”
“I bet you say that to all the girls.”
“No,” he said, his voice suddenly sober. “No, I uh. I don’t.” She looked at him, her heart suddenly racing. The winking lights reflected beautifully in Raleigh’s eyes as he stared at her with...longing? “You make me want to tell you things.” Heat flared as he closed the distance between them, holding her carefully against his side. The kisses were tender, yet passionate and desperate; as though they held the answers both were desperately seeking.
Raleigh swung his legs over and jumped down from the ledge, his desire growing as Ella jumped into his arms, gown flowing as she wrapped her legs around his waist and arms around his neck. The kisses persisted, harder and faster. He lowered the both of them to the warm concrete and slid a blanket out from behind a box, laying her down onto the soft fabric.
He kneeled on top of her, caressing her exposed legs as his mouth sought her collarbone. She let out a quiet moan as she guided him up higher, needing him to touch her; needing him to make her quiver. Her hands played with the hem of his pants, gently stroking the skin below. His breath hitched, and he abruptly stopped her. “Before we do this,” he whispered. “I...I need you to know that it can’t mean anything.”
Her heart dropped. “Can’t mean anything?” Was he serious? What about how he looked at her? How he held her? How he...how he touched her? God, she was so stupid. Of course. She was just another notch on Raleigh Carrera’s belt.
“It’s just a bit of fun,” he repeated, but the meaning of the words didn’t quite meet his eyes. She was such an idiot. Ella pushed him off of her, refusing to let him see the tears threatening to run down her cheeks. “Ella, wait-” She shook her head.
“I’m not just a bit of fun, Raleigh Carrera,” she replied to behind her, her voice breaking. Shit. The stinging became too much and she wiped her eyes, knowing that the mascara had smeared over her perfectly made-up skin. She quickly dialed Hank’s number, the need to get away from Raleigh tearing her insides apart.
Though he called for her, Raleigh didn’t follow as she made her way out of the building and down to the sidewalk. He stood watching her shoulders heave up and down as sobs began to choke out of her. He wanted to hold her; wanted to be there. Wanted to apologize; wanted to say he didn’t mean it. Wanted to say he was scared, no, terrified of how he felt about her.
But instead, he just watched as her limo driver came up to the sidewalk, pulling him into his strong arms and glaring up at Raleigh. He rubbed his hand down his face, wetness spilling down from his eyes to his cheeks. It was for her own good, he told himself. I’m no good.

Should You Fight Them: The 7KPP Edition
This smacked me over the head today and so I had to write them all out, featuring all the current LIs, the other main delegates, and your servants, organized by kingdom. Disclaimer: These are all my opinions and are not meant to be taken seriously.
Princess Ana
Oh, we all know Ana would love to fight you, and frankly, she’ll kick your ass but she’ll enjoy doing it, especially if you have some skill. Plus, if you’re a girl, she’ll be so proud of you for even trying some stuff that she’s tried to teach you and if you get a few blows in, even better. Heck, she might even consider it foreplay. Which, hey, if you’re into that sort of thing, then all the better for you. Basically, go for it, fight Ana, but know what you’re getting yourself into.
Prince Zarad
See, the thing about Zarad is that for all he says he can’t fight people off, we all know he’s full of shit. Being disingenuous is sort of his whole schtick, meaning if you sauntered in thinking you could knock him down in a single blow, he’d probably hand you your ass without even mussing his hair. Plus, the boy is super graceful so if nothing else, he’ll be able to keep moving enough that he’d probably tire you out and then be able to come in for the final blow. On the other hand, if you have a good sense of what you’re doing and can read him/hold your own, he’d probably genuinely enjoy it, so you know what? There are definitely worse things in the world than fighting Zarad.
Lord Blain
You can absolutely kick Blain’s ass. It wouldn’t even be hard, if the play was any indication. Just get one punch in on his pretty little face and he’d be too distraught to even stop you or fight back in any way. For that matter, you’d probably have much of Corval’s support if you did, and there is absolutely no doubt that Ana and Zarad would eat popcorn and shout encouragement from the sidelines. There would be virtually no ramifications and pretty much everyone would get a kick out of it. Obliterate Lord Blain.
Prince Hamin
Man, Hamin’s another case where you technically COULD fight Hamin and frankly, some people might even appreciate you stopping his nonsense for a bit—here’s looking at you, Cordelia and Jasper, but he’s also undoubtedly trained in fighting, and especially trained in Hisean fighting, which would never in a million years be entirely sportsmanly. All in all, he could probably take you pretty easily, though to his credit, he’d probably appreciate both your chutzpah and your giving him a story to tell in the future. Basically, fight Hamin if you really want to but be wary.
Princess Cordelia
The thing about Cordelia is that while she may look like a proper princess and have the lineage of one, she was also raised in Hise and no doubt has the training of one. My dude. My pal. She may be restrained and unerringly polite but we all know that if you mess with her, she could probably hold her own and then ruin your entire life later with her usual polite smile and without ever stepping out of the bounds of propriety. A word to the wise: Do not fuck with Princess Cordelia.
Earl Emmett
Really? You want to fight Emmett, of all people? Come on, dude, I know it’d be an easy fight for anyone but what’s the point? It’d be like kicking a puppy. All he cares about is your happiness. You wouldn’t even feel good about beating him after you finished because of how unfair of a fight it is. Hell, he’d probably let you kick his ass while you’re at it, especially if you give him any indication that you think he deserves it. So yeah, sure, you could definitely do it and win, but at what cost?
Duke Lyon
With Lyon, it’s a bit tricky. On the one hand, the guy barely eats or gets his head out of a book, so I don’t think he’d be too hard to take on. Sure, he might have his height going for him but a good blow to the knees will probably bring him down to your level and then it can’t possibly be too hard. On the other hand, the boy has read A Lot and he’s probably learned something about self-defense from them, so if you let him get his bearings and actually think about things, you might have a bit more trouble, especially, I would guess, if you threaten books in any way. He’s a pretty quick thinker, after all. Basically, it’s probably doable but there’s no guarantee you’ll get out completely unscathed.
Lady Avalie
Dear god, if you have any sense of self-preservation, be careful around Avalie. She is one of the most cunning people on this entire list and definitely one of the most determined. If you don’t have a healthy fear of Lady Avalie, you’re either very brave or very foolish. Or both. Sure, she might not look all too physically imposing but I dare you to try and tell me that she can’t outthink you in the time it takes you to even plan your first move. And then she’d probably find a way to spin it to her own benefit and completely destroy you in the same breath, all with that bright sparkle and unreadable expression. Beware of Avalie.
Prince Lisle
I’m sorry, but what are you even doing? Seriously, you want to fight Lisle? Whatever did he do to you? The poor boy wouldn’t hurt a fly and is so dutiful that he puts his kingdom over his heart without blinking. I mean, yeah, he’s so proper and gentle and soft-spoken that he could probably be pretty easy to beat in a fight, especially if you fight dirty, but it’s like taking candy from a baby but worse because the baby at least might have annoyed you by crying or something and Lisle could never have done anything to you! For shame!
Princess Penelope
Look, Penelope is one of the few people on this list you should fight LESS than Lisle. How could you ever do that to her? All she wants is to make friends and you want to come to blows with her? DUDE. She’d probably just look at you and not even make any move to defend herself. Do you really think you could handle that on your conscience? And then you’d have to deal with Lisle and probably all of Wellin while we’re at it. And you know what? You’d have to deal with me as well. How DARE you even consider it. HOW DARE.
Stranger Danger Grand Duke Woodly
On one hand, Woodly is getting on there in age and doesn’t seem like the most fit person in the world, considering he seems much more inclined to getting things done by manipulation and communication. In that sense, his physical prowess won’t be the best. However, that age doubtless also comes with plenty of experience and we already know he likes messing with people just to see what happens so he probably also has that sort of mindset, as well as a group of people he could probably manipulate into protecting him. But also, I understand, it’s just so damn TEMPTING. So go ahead, give Stranger Danger that punch you’ve been tempted to deliver, but be careful; it’s probably harder than it looks.
Sayra
The thing about Sayra is that she’s cautious and knows her own strengths. This means that she may not have the same training as some people but she doubtless can hold her own if she needs to. She also has the guts to stand up for what is right, so if you so much as threaten the other servants, you will invoke her righteous wrath and if nothing else, she’ll be able to hold you off until support arrives… and it will. Do not fight Sayra unless you want the world—or, at least, the entirety of Vail Isle—to know your mistake.
Ria
Okay, let’s get one thing straight, here. How dare you even THINK about fighting Ria? What has she ever done to you except love and support you? I mean, yeah, you would almost definitely kick her ass, no matter how much background in fighting you have, but like. This is Ria we’re talking about. HOW DARE YOU? So yeah, you’d win, but at what cost? Plus, you’d have Sayra and Jasper after your ass and you’d absolutely deserve it YOU ACTUAL MONSTER.
Jasper
Excuse me, are you crazy? This is Jasper we’re talking about, your own butler. If anyone here has been unerringly on your side, doing his best to help you through anything, it’s Jasper. Also, this guy is a beast? He’s utterly unflappable. He can take on arguing/fighting delegates outside your door without breaking a sweat. The man could probably handedly destroy someone in a fisticuffs and then show up at your door without having so much as spilled a drop of tea, and you think you can take him? Think again. Besides, you’d have the narrator on your ass and given everything they know, that’s probably an absolutely terrible position to be in. Do NOT fight Jasper.
Lord Clarmont
You know what? I would say that Clarmont would definitely be able to at least hold his own against you, but it really depends on the situation. I mean, the boy is preparing to help lead a revolution against the current leaders of Revaire. He’s got to know some combat, and I doubt it’s the particularly honorable kind. On the other hand, though, Clarmont can be a total gentleman so like. If he likes you, he might just let you win, or at the very least, go a lot easier on you. Probably grinning and giving you advice as if it were a sparring match, damn the guy and his good heart. But also, he’s so sweet? Why would you fight Clarmont? Hasn’t he already gone through enough in his life? Don’t fight Clarmont.
Princess Gisette
I feel like when it comes to Gisette, the phrase “appearances can be deceiving” is very very appropriate. Sure, she might seem like a strong wind might blow her over, but she’s survived being Jarrude’s sibling for years and almost definitely has had a part in the Revairan overthrow. She has all the manipulative skills of Woodly or Avalie with no morality and the added bonus of probably being constantly underestimated. Hell, if she catches wind of what you’re planning, she might even preemptively pay someone to take you out before you’re even an actual thorn in her side. All in all, be very cautious, lest she destroy you without so much as a warning.
Jarrude Prince Jarrod
Please for the love of god, fight Jarrude. It is your moral obligation. Do it for us all. Punch him in his stupid smug face, knee him in the groin, and take him down a peg or ten. Oh, sure, the boy probably does know how to fight and absolutely has anger issues that would make him extremely violent, not to mention you might have the entire Revairan army after your ass as you try to escape, but look me in the eyes and tell me it wouldn’t be worth it. That’s right, you can’t. Because it would ABSOLUTELY be worth it. BE OUR CHAMPION AND FIGHT JARRUDE.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars ⭐️

1422 Ulva Isle Is the Norse name for Wolf Isle.
The premise of this series is that this clan is cursed by an old crone. The first Macquarie Chieftain, got a lass pregnant with no offer of marriage and married another due to a clan alliance. Well this lass was so broken she took her own life. So her powerful witch mother cursed the entire Macquarie clan to stop creating illegitimate children forcing them in a cruel world alone. Now they won’t be able to populate and get any lass pregnant, not until the clan really comprehends what true love really is! Plus the mates they chose can’t be from illegitimate births or again the curse can’t be broken, However this includes all Macquarie properties and everyone living on them will live in infertility and contagious illness. Plus it will affect every living thing not just the clan, but also the livestock and harvest as everything will die and nothing will exist. It will be a cold, miserable, barren, existence! The witch then stuck her blade into the tree covered in blood which made the tree cry forever for the Macquarie clan of Ulva Isle! This tree can’t be cut down or remove the dagger or they would be cursed forever and never have any chance for love and to populate with bairns. Now things were starting to change as the oldest brother Adam married Lark and the first buds appeared on the tree. It was a start and the next chapter begins centering on Beck Macquarie….
Scotl,and, 1547
This book centers on Beck Macquarie who doesn’t really believe in this ridiculous family curse. The only things he loves is his brothers Adam, Callum, Drostan, Eagan, and sister-in-law Lark, his clan and the boat he name The Calypso. He had been building with his own two hands for the past two years with all the love in his heart! Now he is a pirate hunter with his speed worthy boat. The thing he hates most is pirates, especially the notorious Claude Jandeau who abducts and brutalizes women and children and sells them into slavery! He nearly did that to his sister-in-law Lark two years ago (The Highlander’s Unexpected Proposal) but luckily they got her in time! He has been trying to catch this slippery weasel Jandeau to kill him with no success!
On Eilean Mòr Isle in the Sound of Jura, Beck meets the beautiful Erica Wentworth and her small entourage who is near starving! This is her family not by blood, but still a family. This family consisted of the middle aged Alice, thirteen year old Anders, eight year old Pip and Hester who was about three years old. Each of them were rescued by the pirate who is like a father to Erica, Captain John Pritchert, another privateer, for King Henry of England. He had saved Erica at twelve years of age, after the wicked Pirate Jandeau and his crew of fifty evil pirates on his ship, The Borreau, that brutally murdered her parents right in front of Erica! Jandeau was planning on selling Erica into slavery and Captain John luckily saved her. Captain John even killed two of his own crew who tried to later attack her! Even though Erica was in shock, she feels very guilty for not saving her baby brother who was also a prisoner she assumes on Jandeau’s ship! She has no idea if her brother who was three years old is dead, alive or a slave! Because of this Erica has dedicated her life to helping saving other lost children.
Beck sees Erica doesn’t trust easily and lies easily, but she is different than any other woman he has ever met. Not that he has met many woman living on Wolf Isle! Erica doesn’t trust men at all after all she has been through in her young life . Yet notices how different Beck is than most men, besides being drop dead gorgeous! She is so worried about Captain John and his crew on his ship, The Devils Blood, as they should of picked her up by now. Besides the fact they were near starving.
Beck saves Erica and her entourage and brings them to Wolf Isle, the attraction between Beck and Eliza is quite obvious. As they are like a moth to a flame and the chemistry between them is sizzling hot! Erica decides she wants the honorable Beck Macquarie to teach her about passion and give her lessons in bed. As Eliza doesn’t want to ever get married and be any man’s possession. Beck knows he can’t get her pregnant or he might curse his family forever. They both want Jandeau dead! The one thing Jandeau wants is Erica, the one that slipped through his fingers and soon Eliza is going to have to make a decision between the free and secure life she has lived or sacrificing everything for the people she loves! What shall she choose?
As Beck and Erica are like a a moth to a flame, for these star crossed lovers this attraction turns into love. Can Beck convince this Lass who might have some royal British bloodlines to stay with him forever? A Lass who curses like a sailor, who is more comfortable in sailors clothes than in frilly dresses and petticoats. A woman who loves the freedom of the sea and the spray of the ocean breeze as much as Beck, Except Erica tries to steal the one thing he loves as much as his family. Is it the ultimate betrayal? Does Erica ever find out what happened to Captain John the man who is like a second father to her and his missing pirate crew? Does she ever discover the fate of her baby brother and will she ever forgive herself for not saving him? Will Jandeau ever get his hands on the beautiful Erica to torment and pillage? Can Beck convince Erica to stay with him on Wolf Isle and let him love her forever? Read and find out the answers of so many questions in this breathtaking story!
I have been a long fan of this author Heather McCollum’s for over five years and have read and loved every book she has ever written to be honest. Yet this book absolutely blew me away! It is definitely her best work in my opinion. A book I definitely could not put down! It has everything readers will love: a swoon worthy hero, a heroine who has witnessed many horrors in life yet has a worthy goodness in her and a gentle heart. A black hearted evil villain that will give you chills and squirm in your seat! Plus the wonderful Macquarie family that you want to just become a part of.
Now if you want to talk about plotting this had plots within plots where I definitely was holding onto my seat and gasping for air! Definitely was causing some heart palpitations in this reader as I was swept away in a definite literary masterpiece that I absolutely wholeheartedly loved! These characters both good and bad are absolutely awe inspiring and unforgettable. It is one of those books you don’t want to see end! Probably one of my favorite books that I have read in the past decade! Yes I loved The Highlander’s Pirate Lass that much as it was totally brilliant! A book historical readers definitely don’t want to miss! I can’t recommend this book enough as every page from start to finish was an absolute masterpiece! I would give this book a bazillion stars if I could as 5 stars does not seem nearly enough! Woohoo, I am so excited and looking forward to reading Callum Macquarie’s story next in the third book in the Brothers of Wolf Isle series!

Interview With The Author
What initially got you interested in writing?
All writers are, by nature, readers first. As Richard Peck once said, “We write by the light of every story we have ever read.” After visiting bookstores and dreaming of my name on the spine of a book, I decided to take the first step – to write a scene. That led to a whole chapter, and then a book – plus five more before I became published. Learning the craft is the toughest part of the journey, of course.
What genres do you write in?
A friend once said a writer can write anything. I prefer reading genre fiction to literary fiction – those vague endings or runaround plots annoy me at times. And while I have dabbled in sf/f, YA, and children’s stories, I prefer writing historical and cozy mystery.
What drew you to writing these specific genres?
Reading Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes plus Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. I love Christie’s mystery plots. When I decided to earn a Masters in the Writing Popular Fiction program at Seton Hill University, I chose to study historical mystery and hone my skills in plotting, characterizations, etc. The real world may not deliver, but readers absolutely want that sense of justice in the mystery genre.
How did you break into the field?
I wrote a historical western mystery – my version of Charles Portis’s True Grit but set on the 1869 transcontinental railroad. Double Crossing won the Western Writer’s of America Spur Award for Best First Novel in 2012. Quite a surprise for me, since I knew the contest would be tough – and I feel honored to be included among the best.
What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?
A sense of place and a satisfying story. My writing partner, Sharon Farrow, and I have a wonderful time re-creating G.B. Shaw’s Pygmalion witty characters Eliza Doolittle and Henry Higgins and bringing them to life in historical mysteries. For my teddy bear cozy mysteries, I hope readers identify and laugh with my amateur sleuth while she works to restore order to her small town after tracking down the murderer.
What do you find most rewarding about writing?
Creating a believable place, I think – I’d love to visit my setting of Silver Hollow!
What do you find most challenging about writing?
Keeping to the discipline of writing every day. Life gets in the way at times, but deadlines happen! It’s always tough to know if people will enjoy a story, too.
What advice would you give to people wanting to enter the field?
Take the time to learn the craft. Write, revise, revise, revise again. Proofread. Hire an editor or learn to edit your own work, and thoroughly proofread again. Keep reading.
What type of books do you enjoy reading?
I love mysteries, but also biographies, science fiction and fantasy, YA and a well written children’s picture book that makes me laugh!
Is there anything else besides writing you think people would find interesting about you?
I’m an artist – with little time to paint or do crafts, but I try to squeeze that in whenever possible and visit artist markets. Creativity in any form helps writing. I’m a classic music fan, and love movies with Audrey Hepburn or Cary Grant, plus most Alfred Hitchcock movies. But I’m a also a huge fan of J.R.R. Tolkien and J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter.
What are the best ways to connect with you, or find out more about your work?
Facebook and Twitter – like my author pages and follow my tweets! I’m also on Pinterest, which is like a visual corkboard, a feast for the eyes.

Book: Highland Warrior by Heather McCollum
Series: Sons of Sinclair, Book 2
Publisher: Entangled
Release Date: April 27, 2021
Overall Rating: 5/5 stars
True history: Robert Stuart/ Stewart is the 1st Earl of Orkney and Lord of Zetland was a recognised illegitimate son of James V, King of Scotland, and his mistress Eupheme Elphinstone.
Orkney Isle, Scotland
1589
The hero: Joshua Sinclair, was the second male born in his family and also known as the horseman of war. He had been trained by his father to put war before anything else, this was due his father grieving his mother’s loss. Now his father was dead and his brother is the clan chief: Joshua previously had been upset by the way his brother is leading their clan as the new chieftain, as Cain ( Book #1) he is bringing peace and solitude to the land instead of planning battles and war to rule all of Scotland. In this you see Joshua’s immaturity and bloodlust for warfare seeing how he only desires power and felt the Sinclair clan was powerful and strong enough to rule all of Scotland! Yet his brother the new Chief is seeing other peaceful alternatives and saving lives.
Unhappy Joshua leaves his clan to become a mercenary, training men for gold in other clans. His current assignment is in the Isle of Orkney, training Robert Stuart’s men to defend themselves and turning into warriors. Also since this was a noble clan Joshua had to be very careful or he could end up having his own head lopped off- due to Robert Stuart’s royal connections. As he is Uncle to King of Scotland King James VI and I.
Now Joshus was starting to see things from his eldest brother’s view especially after a young boy from a recent battle is killed. As his side supposedly won which was giving Joshua a bad taste for war! In addition, he had enough of working for this oppressing Earl, including training side by side with an enemy from his previous battle. This mercenary was nicknamed “the Brute” by the local islanders, but his real name is John Dishington, who never felt any remorse-no matter if it was a man or a child who was killed. It was definitely time for Joshua to leave this life and return to his family at Girnigoe Castle, at the mainland of Scotland.
The. heroine: Kára Flett daughter of murdered Norse King, who is young widow with a nine year old son, Geir. Tára’s son actually tries to steal Joshua’s warhorse, Fuil who loves turnips. She also knew Joshua Sinclair (Horseman of War) was the leader training Robert Stuart’s warriors to butcher her people, as if they hadn’t already done enough against them already! This includes taking their King! So luck comes calling as he comes to their deserted village tavern on his way home. As he wants to be home on the mainland of Scotland in Caithness, at Girnigoe Castle, for Samhain to honor loved ones who had died this year. Joshua wanted to honor his deceased father’s spirit for this occasion. So Kára comes up with an idea to seduce him and get her with a child. It was a way to connect him to her clan, as they are desperate as they recently took King Eric into custody not even knowing if he was dead or alive! Now she must convince him to stay and train her people so they can defend themselves. Robert Stuart and his warriors have destroyed Kára’s clan by starving them by stealing their food, livestock especially their horses and abducting their women. Now they are in ‘hiding and need someone to train them desperately! The problem is Robert has noble family connections which could bring war right to Clan Sinclair’s door. His clan could lose their castle, property and cherished horses. As this would be considered treason!
Joshua is immediately attracted to Kára and finds her very enthusiastic in bed, well she was actually the best bed partner he’s ever had and thinks she’s ruined him for other women. Yet he sees through her manipulation and he does not like being deceived and feels that is it exactly. He is disappointed feeling she is using him like so many other women. Until he realizes it is desperation as he did not realize how Robert Stuart has been mistreating and abusing her people not allowing them to hunt, forcing free labor on his grounds, abducting women, even their healer and stealing their livestock. The treatment of the islanders is horrible so he does show them self defense and makes an offer instead of fighting. Unfortunately that is what they really want for to lead them in this fight. Will he stay or leave? Has a women who never wants to wed captured his heart? Plus Kára as many in her clan wanted her to marry Torben who only wants her for her title. She feels nothing for him plus her heart has been closed since her husband died. Now she is very attracted to Joshua Sinclair besides knowing how to operate her body he seems to answer her mind too. So will she get him to stay or will he catch the next ship to Caithness? Will Kára’s heart be broken when he leaves? Has a warrior Queen finally captured the heart of the Horseman of War? What lengths these two will go to realize love really does conquer all!
This book totally captured my heart-a magnificent read from start to finish. I can’t recommend it enough. One of my favorite reads of 2021. Heather McCollum is one of my go to authors. I have read every book this author has written, but I must say I think “Highland Warrior” is my absolute favorite! Plus the lengths Joshua and Kára go through to save her people and try to find a better life is definitely mind blowing! This includes my favorite style of reading true history with a fictional romance and Robert Stuart, first Earl of Orkney was a real person in history who was an illegitimate son of King James V and had nine legitimate children, including many illegitimate children from mistresses, plus he treated the island people horribly. He definitely was a monster, so not the best role model for his children. So a big BRAVO to author, Heather McCollum for writing an incredible book that really touched this readers heart. Mòran taing which means many thanks in Scottish Gaelic.
This book is definitely one to put on the shelf keeper and to read again. It’s has all the elements that historical readers love from weaving true historical facts with an extraordinary fictional romance. Each chapter starts with a quote from ancient military strategist Sun Tzu. It was filled with a breathtaking setting and dialogue including superb characters but I think it was the plotting that gripped me the most. The plotting I felt was so inventive yet astonishing never knowing when the next bomb was going to explode or where. To me it was what made this book so much fun to read plus the chemistry between Joshua and Kára was off the charts! A book I definitely recommend and one readers do not want to miss!
I can’t wait and look forward for book #3 Gideon Sinclair ‘s story who is the Horseman of Justice.
