#din and grogu are absolutely adorable

Thinking about force ghost Anakin playing peekaboo with Grogu
Also Din being freaked the fuck out by the idea of a force ghost. Especially bc he can’t see them. The first time things get hot and heavy between him and Luke, Luke is all distracted and glaring into nowhere, goes bright pink when Din asks why he’s glaring into the corner mouthing something - and it turns out to be Yoda lecturing Luke on attachments. It takes a while before Din stops asking if they’re alone in between make out sessions
Or Luke’s last blue milk pudding going missing, and Din blames it on Grogu (bc nobody can ever stay mad at his sweet little face.) but Anakin, who absolutely adores Grogu, and is still of the belief that nobody is good enough for Luke, pops up to tell Luke that it was Din. That he and Obi Wan saw it with their own eyes!
And Din immediately realising what happened as soon as Luke turns to him and glares, arms crossed disappointedly. 1. For eating it. 2. For blaming their sweet, innocent son. When he leaves the room, after being assured that it would be replaced, Din is glaring around the room grumbling about being ratted out
Picturing him sneakily eating it and out loud asking that they please don’t tell Luke. He’ll talk to an empty room, bc he’s mildly uncomfortable with their presence
(Much like Mike from BBC Ghosts)
But mostly, thinking about Anakin dorkily crouched down playing peekaboo. Luke finds it endearing - feels good about seeing a soft side of his father, what he might have been like/what he was like pre-dark side. And Din one day just seeing Grogu giggling and clapping at nothing and being uncomfortable/creeped out as fuck. Like when a cat meows/stares at an empty corner of a room

#19: MY BOYS NEEDED ME
.
"i will hurt you for this. i don't know how yet, but give me time. a day will come when you think yourself safe and happy, and suddenly your joy will turn to ashes in your mouth, and you'll know the debt is paid."
-George RR Martin (A Clash of Kings)
.
Grogu was an overall well behaved kid in the grand scheme of things. Was he mischievous? Yes. A menace to any local wildlife? Absolutely. However, he was always very good about listening to Din. Well, mostly. That being said, Grogu was still a young kid mentally, and he was not immune to having complete and total toddler sized meltdowns when he felt slighted. The biggest temper tantrum Din had been witness to was ages ago when a sleep deprived Grogu lost his snack while Din was running on a hunt, and they had left the planet before Din could replace the cookies.
Today beat that in a landslide.
“Ma! Ma! Ma!” Grogu beat his silver ball against the glass repeatedly with each cry for you. The first twenty minutes of the flight had just been the child screeching in frustration, and had dissolved to this tactic when Grogu was too tired to cry. “Ma! Ma! Ma⏤”
“Grogu, stop.” Din called back.
“No! Ma!”
“Ad’ika, please⏤”
“No! Ma!” Grogu began to rapidly slap the metal ball against the glass. “Buir, digur Ma!”
“I didn’t forget her, ad’ika.” Din sighed and tried to calm him for the hundredth time. “She had to stay behind. She’ll be there when we get⏤”
Grogu swapped back to screaming angrily. Din huffed and leaned forward to activate a holocall. The child paused in his tantrum when he saw the screen pop up and began to crawl down from his perch in the droid’s seat. The call was answered and your pretty features filled his screen. Despite his frustration of having to hear his child howl and beat glass for the last half hour, his lips spread into a broad smile at the sight of you.
You grinned. “Do you miss me already, Djarin?”
“Yes.” Din blurted. Grogu crawled out onto Din’s lap and began to cry in blubbering sobs while holding his arms up as if you’d be able to scoop him up through the screen. Your eyes widened, and Din wrapped an arm around his son and rubbed his back soothingly. “He didn’t realize we were saying bye to you on the tarmac. He’s been throwing a tantrum since we left.”
“Ma!” Grogu hiccuped in his sobs.
Din watched your own lip quiver as you shook your head. “Oh, baby, I’m so sorry. It’s okay.”
He leaned back in his seat and watched in admiration as you remotely calmed the kid down. It looked like you were in the clinic right now based on the white coat you wore, and things must not have been too busy since you didn’t seem in a rush. Din stayed silent for the next fifteen minutes, scratching Grogu’s back, while you spoke to him and sang him songs. Eventually, Grogu fell asleep⏤ exhausted from his tantrum.
“Thank you.” Din sighed. “He was miserable.”
“I feel so terrible.” You set your hands on your cheeks with a frown. “I didn’t realize he didn’t know. I just assumed⏤”
“Not your fault.” Din replied. “I think we all just assumed, and he assumed you’d be coming along.”
“I didn’t think…” The words left your lips in a breath and the way you bit them back made him think you hadn’t meant to let them slip at all. “Never mind.”
Din shook his head, adjusting Grogu so his head could rest on his shoulder more comfortably, and connected the dots. “Of course he’d be upset to part from you. You’re important to him. He loves you.” Like I do, the thought drifted through his mind involuntarily but not unwelcome. Din chuckled, “You’re Ma.”
“I know. I love him too.” You mumbled and something about hearing you declare your love for his son so blatantly and without pause stroked the domestic part of him making him preen in pride. “But, he was so excited to fly again and the two of you used to do this all the time without me…”
Din wondered if you truly didn’t know how important you had come to be to him and Grogu or if an anxiety of some kind kept you from fully accepting it. Din didn’t mind reminding you every single day if he had to. He’d take on that job happily. He hummed. “Before, you didn’t exist in our lives. You changed everything when you came, ner kar’ta.”
He saw your lips twitch up into a soft smile and he let out a comfortable sigh. You shook your head. “You’re more of a sweet talker than I ever would’ve guessed, Din Djarin.” Din chuckled. Your eyes left the screen momentarily and you pushed out an annoyed grumble. “I have four patients waiting for me. There was a small collision on the tarmac after you left. Nothing too serious, but⏤”
“I didn’t know you were busy.” Din stiffened. You had been on the call with him for nearing twenty minutes now. “I didn’t mean to drag you from work. You could’ve told me⏤”
“Relax.” You replied soothingly. The smile you wore took a mischievous edge and you winked at him. “My boys needed me.” It was embarrassing the way Din’s heart pounded in his chest like he was a small child experiencing attention from his school yard crush. The stupid, silly grin he had to have been wearing was at least hidden from view. “I’ll talk to you later?”
“Of course. Have a good day, ner kar’ta.”
“Stay safe.”
Din ended the call and slumped back in his seat while rubbing Grogu’s back. Every other breath or so his small body would be racked with a shuddering sigh from all the sobbing he had gone through. Din blamed himself for this meltdown. He should’ve realized the toll this would have taken on his son. Grogu was young for his kind, but he had already seen so much loss in his life.
“Ni ceta, ad’ika.” Din murmured softly.
Tumblr media
Three days had passed since Din had left with Grogu. The worst part of it, other than just missing them as badly as you did, was living in that house alone. That’s what it felt like with them gone. Just a house, not a home. It was bad enough that you nearly caved and asked to stay with Nima for the time being. You hated getting back from work and not hearing Grogu giggle mischievously while you made dinner or hearing Din murmuring a lullaby to get the boy to sleep. It was painfully quiet and empty. Considering Nima was already worried about you though, you didn’t ask to stay with her. Instead, you had settled on sleeping in Din’s room. At least there, nestled in his sheets with his smell enveloping you, you found some mild relief. You had even dragged Grogu’s stuffed blue frog to rest with you. It was pathetic, you knew, and you were embarrassed to even mention it to Din during your calls with him.
For that reason, work had become your favorite time of day. Luckily, you had actually been a bit more busy lately than usual. Well, lucky for you. Not so lucky for the poor souls wandering in with injuries.
“I kind of thought you’d be using a cautery.” Your newest patient of the day, a man who worked with the local fire department, chuckled. He was younger than you by a few years if you had to guess. The man, named Hale, was good looking, you couldn’t deny it, but his messy, slightly curled brown hair only made your heart ache as you thought of Din. “Figured I’d end up with a gnarly scar.”
“Nope.” You chirped and continued suturing the gash across his abdomen. It wasn’t too deep, he didn’t lose enough blood to require replacement, but it definitely needed attention. “You still might scar, but it won’t be very impressive I don’t think.”
“Shame. I was hoping it’d make me look a little bit cooler. Women like guys with some macho scars, right?”
Your mind drifted to Din’s skin. The various scars that littered his torso and arms. A sigh left your lips, “Yeah. I guess we do.”
Hale nodded once. He shifted in pain, wincing, and you reassured him that you were nearly done. Just a few more stitches. He cleared his throat. “So, is there trouble brewing that we should know about at the fire department?”
“Hmm?”
“Well,” Hale titled his head across the room, “The entire security force of Nevarro is in the clinic with Peli’s best mechanic and our only doctor. Sounds like trouble.”
His words made you glance over your shoulder to see Vanth and Mayfeld arguing over maker knows what while Nima texted away on her communicator. You rolled your eyes with a shake of your head. “No. No trouble. Apparently there’s just nothing better to do in this city than annoy me.”
Hale chuckled at your reply. A lot of people seemed to linger around you as if you were a ticking time bomb. These three were the worst of them. When you asked Din about it, he said he asked a few people to just keep a close eye on you. By a 'few people' he must mean all of Nevarro. You finished your work and bandaged over the sutures before helping him sit up. Hale pulled his shirt back on then cleared his throat while you began to clean up your supplies.
“So, uh, hey,” He gave you a nervous smile, “I was wondering if you wanted to go out and get a⏤”
“Whoa!” Nima cut in before the poor guy could even finish his sentence. Despite having been clear across the room, she was suddenly at your side and fully attentive. You resisted the urge to palm your face in exhaustion. Nima pointed in his face as if her next words were a threat. “Don’t you know nothing? She’s taken, big boy. She’s dating the marshal!”
The patient’s eyes glanced over at Vanth who had paused in his argument at Nima’s outburst. Him and Mayfeld were only a few steps away. Hale raised an eyebrow, “Isn’t he a little old to be dating her?”
Vanth’s eyes widened and he stormed over while Mayfeld howled in laughter. Vanth threw his arm around your shoulder then motioned to his face. “I am not too old to be dating her, kid.”
“We’re not dating!” You threw your hands up in disbelief.
“Not because I’m too old though.” Vanth argued.
“Calm down, grandpa.” Mayfeld snickered. “You’re gonna stroke out.”
“I’m not old.” Vanth argued once more and you caved and allowed your face to fall into your hands.
Mayfeld smirked. “Your gray hair says otherwise.”
“At least, I have hair.”
“Hey!” Mayfeld’s laughs turned to outrage. “I’m not bald. This is a shaved look, is all.”
“Out!” You snapped and pointed to the door. All three of your guests shuffled to the door and you shot Hale, still sitting on the cot with wide and confused eyes, a sympathetic smile. “Give me one moment, and I’ll be back.” He nodded and you turned on your heel. Vanth, Mayfeld, and now Nima had picked up the argument out in the hall, but when you stepped out with your hands on your hips they all grew quiet. At least they had the decency to look ashamed. “What the kriff is going on?”
Nima shrugged. “What do you mean?”
“What do I⏤” You motioned to her. “I cleared you for light work in the garage, and yet you’re here hovering over my every step. And, you two,” You pointed at Vanth and Mayfeld who flinched at the end of your finger, “You two have an entire city to protect. Why the hell are you in my clinic?”
All three of them mumbled out an apologetic answer while not meeting your eyes. Nima crossed her arms and shot you a sheepish smile finally. “We just wanted to make sure you were doing okay. Keep you company!”
“And make sure no one makes a move on the marshal’s girl.” Mayfeld winked at you. Vanth added a grin at his words and offered you a cheerful thumbs up. Of course this would be the one thing these two agree on.
You pinched the bridge of your nose. “Get out of my clinic so I can get back to work.”
“You’re just gonna go back in there? He was flirting with you!” Nima argued.
“Yeah, and I think I’m gonna go in there and say yes to getting a drink.” You said and their eyes widened. You followed it up with a mocking grin. “Then, when Mando gets back and asks why I’m dating a random man from the fire department I’ll tell him it’s because you three pushed me to insanity.” Vanth winced, Nima shifted awkwardly, and Mayfeld grimaced. “How’s that?”
Mayfeld cleared his throat. “Would really love it if you didn’t do that. I don’t want Mando to try and kill me. Again.”
“Out.” You replied. The three of them rushed away and you rolled your eyes in response. It was sweet of them to care, but their lingering presence was going to drive you up a kriffing wall. You hurried back to the main room and shot Ren another apologetic smile. “I’m sorry about them. They mean well.”
He chuckled. “It’s alright. So, if not the cowboy, then the other Marshal? The Mandalorian. You’re dating him?”
“I…” You shrugged. “It’s⏤ Not officially.”
“Alright,” Hale nodded, “That means I have a chance then? Maybe?”
Thoughts of Din rolled over you in waves, as if your body was trying to remind you of who you had⏤ as if you even needed a reminder. You could hear his voice in the back of your head murmuring soft words of care. The promise that when he returned he’d be making you his in every sense of the word ringing clear. You smiled at the thought and shook your head. “No. I’m sorry.”
“That’s alright. I figured I had to try.” Hale shrugged and slid off the cot.
You instructed him on care for his injury and when to be back for you to remove the sutures. Aalya came in after he left and began to ask you questions about supplies and an injury somebody was calling the clinic about to see if they needed to come in. You found it hard to focus. Maker, you hoped they’d be back soon.

The city Daelar had run to was in a rural region of an already rural Outer Rim world named Thyreps. Din had never been here before, barely even heard of it, and from the looks he didn’t plan on making a return trip here⏤ ever. It was a dry, barren place. Hot as Tatooine, but cracked, dead ground versus rolling hills of sand. The city was moderate in size, it must have been the main population on this desolate word, but it was still small enough that if he parked the N1 on the local tarmac he’d be noticed. Din didn’t want to give Daelar the chance to run. He had places to be after all. Din wasn’t looking to drag this trip out any longer than he needed.
So, Din parked the N1 out in the middle of nowhere and hiked into the city. There was an inn on the outskirts where he rented a room. It was times like this he missed the Razor Crest. More than usual, he should say. He was laying on the bed, helmet off, and while Grogu slept in his sealed pram in the corner of the room. Daelar liked to go from his workplace to a brothel. Din planned on catching the man on his way home. Which left him with hours to kill.
Din sat up, ran a hand through his hair, and weighed the pros and cons of calling you. It was late. You were probably getting ready for bed if you weren’t sleeping already. He only hesitated a moment before grabbing his helmet. Worse case scenario, you didn't answer. Best case scenario, he got to see you and hear your voice. Two things he was missing immensely.
He made the video call and it rang for longer than usual. Din was a second away from disconnecting when your line activated. It took a second for his eyes to adjust to the dim view he had of you. From the looks of it, the holo call was being projected from your communicator which was sitting on the night stand beside the bed. The only light in the room coming from the glow the holocall gave off.
“Din?” You mumbled. Your eyes still heavy with sleep. “Is everything alright?”
“Yes, ner kar’ta. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have woken you up.” Din tried to soak in as much of your features as he could. Maker, you were gorgeous. His mind couldn’t help but drift off and think of a future where he’d get to lay next to you in bed. A future where all he’d have to do is reach out and you’d be there. “Go back to sleep.”
You shook your head. “No. I’m awake. Don’t go.”
Din chuckled, but he could tell you were coming to a bit more. Your eyes growing more focused on him. He watched you sit up enough to readjust your pillow before laying back down. Din’s eyes narrowed at the color of the sheets cocooning you. “Are you… Are you in my bed?”
Your eyes widened, truly awake now, and mumbled, “Uh… yes? I’ve been sleeping in your bed since you left. Sorry.”
“Don’t⏤” Din began, his voice firm. The thought of you simply sleeping in his bed should not be as arousing as it was, but his thoughts were running wild and the crotch of his flight suit’s pants were growing tight. “Don’t apologize.” He breathed out. “There is literally nothing you could say that I would like more, ner kar’ta.”
“Hmm.” Your lips curled into a grin. “I don’t know about that. I think there are a few other things I could say that you’d like. Want an example?” Din couldn’t find his voice, and you took that as the only approval you needed. “I’m wearing one of your shirts to sleep in. Just your shirt.”
Din let out an audible groan. His head fell back, lighting clanking against the headboard he was sitting up against, and his hand shifted down to readjust himself⏤ it didn’t help. Meanwhile, you were quietly laughing and the sound had him smiling under his helmet despite the sexual frustration grabbing hold of him.
“You’re trouble.” He shook his head.
“The sooner you get back, the sooner you can punish me for it.”
“Dank farrik.” Din groaned. One hand fisting the bed sheet to keep from touching himself. He blew out a ragged breath of air. “You’re doing this on purpose.”
“Of course, I am.” You chuckled. “I have to tempt you into coming back as fast as possible.”
“There is nothing you have to do in order to tempt me.” Din scoffed. “Just knowing you’re waiting for me in Nevarro is enough.”
“Sweet talker.” You teased. “How far are you from Mandalore? I see you stopped somewhere.” The question was a splash of ice water because he technically hadn’t explained the whole Daelar side mission to you yet. Obviously, you needed to know. For the length that he had known you though, you only knew him as the Marshal. Sure, you were aware of his past as a bounty hunter, but you hadn’t been directly exposed to that side of him yet. If there was anything that could scare you away⏤ it’d be that. “Din?”
“To be honest,” Din hesitated only for a moment, “I’m on Thyreps.”
“I’ve never even heard of that world.” Your brow furrowed.
Din nodded. “It’s pretty remote.” He knew what your next question would be and continued without you speaking up. “Daelar is here.” Your eyes widened and he watched as you slowly sat up. Revealing more of the shirt you had on⏤ his shirt. “Karga and I tracked him down. I’m planning to... make things right.” Din paused. His jaw locked and he had to force himself to relax. “Is… Is that alright?”
You stayed quiet for a moment and Din could feel his nerves fraying by the second. Finally, you nodded and there was a fire in your eyes. “Good. Make him pay.”
It was the most bloodthirsty thing he had ever heard you say, and Din felt a chill run down his spine. The start of this conversation may have dampened his mood briefly, but he was even hotter under the collar now. Maker, he wished he could touch you. The temptation to touch himself while on call with you was overwhelming. The only thing halting him being the thought that the first time he’d come undone in your actual presence he didn’t just want your eyes on him⏤ Din wanted your hands on him. He wanted you close enough that he could actually feel your skin. He’s made it this long, he supposed.
“You should get back to sleep.” Din said. It was true. You had work in the morning, and he had work in just a few hours. Your eyes softened as you mumbled for him to be careful and Din sighed before ending the call. First things first, he needed an ice cold shower. Then, skira.
Tumblr media
The sun was only just beginning to rise when Din spotted Daelar leaving the brothel. Stumbling out, more specifically. Din leaned against a wall across the street and just watched for a moment. Just the sight of the man made his skin bristle in anger. His hands balled into fists. As Daelar began to wander down the street, Din crossed the street and followed after him slowly. The side of him that enjoyed the thrill of a hunt was disappointed. This was much too easy. It wanted a challenge. However, the other side of him reminded Din that the sooner he got this done the sooner him and Grogu got home to you.
“Him.” Grogu huffed from the pram floating beside him “Him, don’t like.”
“Don’t like him.” Din corrected the order of his son’s words. “Good job, ad’ika.” Daelar turned a corner into an alley and Din sighed. Too easy. “Close your pram.”
Grogu grumbled a few words before hitting the front of the pram and letting the metal walls close over him. Din rounded the corner after the man, but came to a halt when he was greeted by three blasters. Daeler a step behind the ones holding the blasters wearing a smug grin.
“Hey, Marshal.” Daelar chuckled. “Funny seeing you in these parts.”
Din locked his jaw in irritation and shifted so Grogu’s pram hid behind him. Of the three people holding the weapons, there were two men, one human the other Rodian, and the third was a human woman. Din strategized in his head, studying the scene, and it suddenly dawned on him. He recognized that woman. Why did he recognize her? Her dark hair was tied up messily and there was an amused chaos in her blue eyes⏤ like she enjoyed that her day was starting with violence. It hit him then. Ari. The last time he had been dropping her off in Jakku. Why anyone would want to go to Jakku, Din didn’t know.
She had been a quarry initially, but the price she was willing to pay him to forgo the bounty and help her out could not be refused. Ari had given him an ingot of beskar. Karga liked to joke that Din had a bad habit of accidentally making allies across the galaxy, something he thought was far-fetched, but this was damning evidence. Helpful though.
He set his hands on his hips and tilted his head. “I see you’re still trouble.”
Ari’s eyes narrowed briefly before snapping open in shock. She lowered her blaster with a laugh and bright grin. “Mando! How the hell are ya?” Din could swear that Daelar’s face lost all color. “Dank farrik, man. Last time I saw you, your armor was shades of red, brown, and broken. Look at you now. Shiny.” Daelar, obviously able to see he was losing his ally, turned and began to sprint away. Ari snapped her fingers. “No.”
At the single, simple word, both men turned and ran after Daelar. Din hummed, mildly impressed. The woman drifted closer, holstering her blister, and pointed at him. “What’re you doing out in my corner of the galaxy? Please don’t tell me I’m on another puck.”
“Knowing you, you probably are, but I’m not here for you.”
Ari thumbed over her shoulder just as her guys dragged Daelar back kicking and screaming. “You after that guy? He’s got a bounty on him?”
“Yes, but I don’t plan on turning him in.” Din replied. His jaw locked again. He glared at Daelar and the way the man’s poor attempts to escape became more frenzied it was clear Din’s rage was understood. Helmet or not. “It’s personal.”
Ari let out a low whistle and glanced back at the man. “Shit. I knew he was dumb, but I didn’t know he was ‘piss off a Mandalorian’ dumb.”
“You’re supposed to protect me!” Daelar screamed at her. “It’s in my contract!”
Din snorted. “You hired him? You should know he’s a medical fraud⏤”
“I am not! I was the best in my field, I’ll have you know!” Daelar howled.
Ari nodded. “Oh, yeah. I know. He’s a fucking idiot.” The man stopped in his temper tantrum to stare at her with wide eyes. She shook her head at him. “Why else would I have you working in my rival’s clinic, you dumbass? I’m hoping you accidentally kill some of his crew.” Ari glanced back at Din and waved her hand at him. “I’m in the middle of a terf war. It’s a whole thing. Would take a while to explain.”
“Yeah. I don’t care.” Din replied.
“So?” Ari clapped her hands. “What do you want him for? He insult ‘The Way’?”
Din shook his head. “He tried to kill my son.”
Ari’s eyes widened in surprise then hardened into irritation. Daelar cried out. “Liar! He was fine when I left! Your wife is a dramatic bitch. She has no idea what she's talking about!” Din didn’t realize his anger could possibly worsen, but somehow it did. Daelar was digging himself deeper into a grave and Din was eager to bury him. “It was a little viral illness, the common cold⏤”
“He spiked a fever. You left him for dead. You left her to deal with it.” Din growled. That night could have ended so tragically. He nearly lost Grogu. Din hadn’t even been there as it happened. Grogu could have slipped away, gone from him forever, and Din would’ve been miles away⏤ useless to him. That loss would have destroyed him. It would have destroyed you. Din can still clearly remember the tremble in your body as you cried that night. The fear so overwhelming, wafting off you in waves, that it nearly drown him just from being near.
“I⏤I didn’t know!” Daelar tried to excuse himself.
Ari drew her blaster again and pointed it at Daelar’s face. “Want me to kill him then?”
Daelar was sobbing now, pleading, and Din shook his head. “No. He’s mine.”
“Fair.” Ari holstered her blaster again then nodded. “Mandalorian’s gonna take him to go.” The men shoved Daelar to the ground, he thrashed against them uselessly, and Din watched one of Ari’s men pull out a pair of binders. Ari drifted closer once more and crossed her arms. “Look at us. I got a crew, and you got a wife and kid. Aw.”
“She’s not actually my wife.” Din admitted.
Ari smirked. “Yeah, but I hear the word you’re leaving off that sentence, Mando. ‘Yet’, huh?”
Din grinned under his helmet and chuckled. “What are you doing out here? Jakku then Thyreps? What’s your obsession with deserted and dirty worlds?”
“I got my reasons.” Ari winked. The men dragged Daelar over and Ari nodded. “Anything else I can do for you? This is the favor I owe you so you might as well make it count.”
“Can you watch my kid?”
“Huh??”
Din stepped to the side and the pram popped open as if on cue. Grogu babbling and upset that he had been in the pram for so long. Ari cooed, “Aw. He looks just like you.” Din tilted his head at her, exasperated at the joke, and she laughed. “Yeah, alright. He’s safe with me. Be back soon though, I got places to be.”
Without another word, Din grabbed Daelar by the collar and glared down at him. Ari gave him her frequency number before disappearing with Grogu and her men. When the alley was empty, Din bared his teeth and hissed out a threat, “Ni cuy' olar par skira.”
Din slammed his fist into Daelar’s face making him crumple to the ground with a groan. He grabbed the man again and began to drag. Every time the bastard tried to slip out of his grip or yell out, Din hit him again. By the time they made it to the edge of the city, Daelar’s face was bloody and the man was limp in his hand. The sun was in the sky now and the temperature was beginning to rise. Din used his whipcord to wrap around the man’s ankle and began to drag Daelar across the cracked and hard ground.
It took thirty minutes to get Daelar out into the middle of nowhere. He stopped next to the N1 and released his whipcord. Daelar laid on the ground moaning pathetically. Din stalked over and stomped his boot on top of Daelar’s chest, he heard a crack of bone even with Daelar’s screams filling the air, and Din pressed down to keep him pinned.
“I almost lost my family because of you.” Din snapped. “That’s why this is happening.”
“It’s not my fault.” Daelar cough and Din pressed harder. The man cried, “I’m sorry, I’m sorry. Please don’t kill me. Your son is alive isn’t he? He’s fine! Don’t kill me!”
Din pulled his foot back and then knelt down beside him. He released the binders then roughly grabbed the man by the collar, dragging him up, and hissed. “He’s alive because of my wife’s quick thinking. She’s brilliant, an actual doctor unlike you, and she saved his life. Because of her, he had a chance.” Din chuckled. “So, no. I’m not going to kill you right now, Daelar.” Briefly, Din could see a flash of relief on the man’s bruised and bloodied features. “I’m going to give you a chance to save yourself. You’re a doctor. Best in your field. You should be able to do it no problem, right?”
Daelar’s eyebrows furrowed and, without preamble, his vibroblade was drawn and Din stabbed it between two of Daelar’s ribs on the right side. The man screamed and Din pulled the blade out and stood. Daelar grasped his side, blood pooling out onto the ground under him, and his breaths were growing shallow.
“You⏤ You said⏤”
“I said I wouldn’t kill you. I didn't.” Din tucked his blade away. He motioned in the direction they came from. “City is that way. Save yourself.”
Daelar shook his head, trying to grab his boots, “It’s too far. It’s⏤ I’ll bleed to death. I’ll⏤ I’ll drown in my own blood in twenty minutes. Sooner if my⏤ my lung collapses.” His breaths were shallow and panicked. “What would you⏤ you have me do?”
Din tilted his head. “Well, if I were you, I’d get to crawling.”
Daelar screamed and sobbed as Din marched to the N1 and boarded. Even with the engines going, Din could still hear the man’s cries but it did nothing but make him nod in assurance. Considering Daelar nearly took his family from him, Din felt like he was showing mercy. He gave the man a chance. Granted, it was a piss poor chance and his odds were in a very low percentile, but you had been stuck in a similar scenario. The N1 took off, angling toward the city’s tarmac so he could pick up Grogu, and Din felt relief at a job being done. More than likely, Daelar was going to die in the desert, and in Din’s opinion that was still more than he deserved.

Am I the only one who just lost any and all love for newer Star Wars material due to Jedi hate ? Like- the only merch or show or even FANDOM topic I get involved in is clone wars stuff and MAYBE TBB. Like- why would I want the watch shows who attempt to rewritte canon and portray the very heroes of Star Wars as the bad guys ?
Why would I want to watch shows that assassinate characters left and right (looking at you, Ahsoka and Sabine) ? Why would I want to buy merch of characters who I not only NOT care about, but who also are used as meta mouthpieces for stupid Jedi hate ?
I think there's TONS of good newer Star Wars material, to be honest.
I loved the Kenobi show and it is arguably one of the most pro Jedi pieces of media to have existed since the Prequels films. Aside from one itty bitty somewhat awkward word choice in one line of one episode, there is absolutely NOTHING in that show that can be used to indict the Jedi or blame them for anything and it is arguably one of the only shows to really spend time MOURNING the Jedi and recognizing the horror of what was done to them. Rebels comes closest after this, but its structure makes it a little less visceral than the Kenobi show was to me.
I really adore Visions and I recognize that this is sort-of Star Wars adjacent more than anything else, but SO LITTLE truly understands what makes Star Wars compelling as a story and really hits on those primary themes the way that Visions does. There's SO MUCH Jedi content in Visions and I remember people complaining about how much Jedi content was in Visions and other people responding that if you were given free reign to just play in the Star Wars sandbox with near zero restrictions on what you could make with it, you would probably ALSO immediately go for the psychic space wizards with laser swords. Who WOULDN'T? Visions also just genuinely has some of the most engaging and heart-wrenching stories to come out of Star Wars in a LONG while and it does it in these beautifully animated 15 minute packages. It's such a gem and I am so glad to be alive at the same time as Visions.
Rogue One is older now, but both Rogue One and Andor, despite having zero actual Jedi in them, really hinge on the themes from the Prequel trilogy about the tragedy in the Star Wars universe, stepping up when no one else will, choosing to be selfless and compassionate for the greater good, etc. Faith and hope are MASSIVE themes within these two works and even though there aren't any space wizards, good or evil, in either story, they feel like some of the most pro Jedi things Star Wars has come out with in a while based on thematic messages ALONE.
The Mandalorian's first two seasons actually have this absolutely BEAUTIFUL story about the selfless sacrifice of one man as he gives up everything in order to help this child find his way back to the culture he'd been ripped from. Everything AFTER that regarding Grogu and Din's storyline is a piece of shit (it's not explicitly anti-Jedi or anything, but it undoes a lot of the things that made their story so compelling and beautiful), but the first two seasons are genuinely GOOD and very pro Jedi in a lot of ways despite the lack of many actual Jedi characters.
The Book of Boba Fett is a terrible show for a LOT of reasons, but shockingly none of them have anything to do with its treatment of the Jedi. If it ever ends up with a season two, I desperately hope they leave Mace Windu's name the fuck out of it, but at this point it is a pretty Jedi neutral show if you're willing to deal with the rest of its bullshit.
Rebels is also somewhat older now, and it has a few lines here and there that are a tad more Jedi critical, but it is by and large VERY Jedi positive and does also follow a lot of the themes of selflessness and sacrifice that go along with being a Jedi. It also has themes of mercy and patience and facing your fears in Sabine's storyline that got entirely thrown away in her later storyline. Just thought that was worth pointing out. For reasons.
TBB is also fairly Jedi neutral, but its treatment of the clones is basically the clone version of being anti Jedi, so I'm not sure it's actually any better. It just traded hating on the Jedi to hating on the clones, and I find that just as distasteful.
I can't really speak to things like comics and novels much since I don't tend to consume them really. I've read a few of the adult novels in the High Republic Phase I and the first one was genuinely very good, but there were some relatively heavy-handed Jedi critical themes within the third book of Phase I (The Fallen Star) that put me off of it a little. I haven't continued into Phase II or III at all, so I have no idea if those themes got continued in later books. I've heard generally good things about the Padawan book, I think.
The Cal Kestis video games, Fallen Order and Survivor, also have their small Jedi critical moments, but much like Rebels, it has these massive overarching themes and messages about compassion and selflessness and sacrifice and facing your fears and mercy. They are immensely Jedi positive in a lot of ways and I really enjoyed both of them.
So out of everything I have seen (and know about) the only stuff that's truly heinously and insultingly anti-Jedi is the Ahsoka show, the Acolyte, and Tales of the Jedi. Three shows and like 30% of one book. Out of a list of like ten different shows and one film and some books and video games. It's not even really HALF of the content we've been getting recently.
A lot of people talk about the Disney era like it's ruined Star Wars, or like nothing it releases has ever been good. But it just straight up isn't true. It's a little insulting to all of the genuinely wonderful work that is being done by all of these other creators to just brush aside everything that's been coming out recently as awful and bad because some of the MOST recent things have been pretty explicitly hateful towards the Jedi. It's not fun that we had the Ahsoka show immediately followed by the Bad Batch followed by the Acolyte. I hate that, too, it feels like we're on this neverending shitshow of stories explicitly aimed at hating a group of characters for no obvious good reason. But I don't think that the last 6 months or so of bullshit should overshadow some of the really beautiful stories we HAVE gotten within the last several years.
If you feel like things are getting difficult, maybe do a "good Star Wars" marathon of sorts. Watch the Prequels, followed by the Kenobi show, then Andor, then Rebels, then Rogue One, then the Original trilogy. This one long beautiful story of people stepping up to fight against selfishness and greed and darkness no matter what.
Or go rewatch Visions or read some of your favorite fanfics and remember all the things about Star Wars that are just universally cool and compelling across the world. Hell, you can try writing something of your own! Anything! A lot of my AU concepts stemmed from spite and really helped me feel a little bit better about Star Wars when it sometimes felt like I was just surrounded by the parts of it I liked the least. Go buy yourself a cool t-shirt or some fun jewelry. Find some pretty stickers and put it on a water bottle or an enamel pin to put on a canvas tote bag or a corkboard.
Curating your fandom experience goes beyond just the internet. There's a reason I am boycotting the Acolyte and it isn't because I think Disney or its creators are going to care at all. I'm doing it for ME, because I had such a shitty time watching the Ahsoka show and it made me so miserable each week that I seriously think I will be better off just leaving it the hell alone and just absorbing whatever ends up crossing my dash from a distance. I only participate in Star Wars fandom servers that I feel safe in and only really get into discussions with personal friends who I know well. If participating in Star Wars fandom is making you sad, maybe take a step back or find a way to create your own corner of fandom that feels better. Ignore the damn Ahsoka show, pretend it never existed. Ignore the Acolyte. Ignore Tales of the Jedi. Ignore Filoni-related bullshit. Focus on the parts you DO like, or give yourself the space to remember why you liked it in the first place.

I don’t have strong opinions about dinbo, but if they did get together and if Obi-Wan and Satine were still alive, can you imagine the family functions?
Like Bo has been the “cool single aunt with a checkered past” for so long and she finally brings home a partner and it’s fucking Din and they’ve already adopted an adorable little Jedi gremlin child.
Satine would absolutely grill this man—who has a very different worldview from her, but so does Bo, so Satine will never fully understand Bo’s taste anyway—just to make sure that he reminds her to eat and go to sleep at a reasonable hour. Din lets Satine know that he has a bullet journal he follows of all the basic self-care things that Bo forgets to do sometimes.
Obi-Wan and Grogu hang out and talk about Jedi stuff and reminisce about old times because Everything Is Fine. They even do a bit of Jedi Training: Uncle Edition.
There’s also some awkward tension between hardcore Jedi Obi-Wan and hardcore zealot Mandalorian Din at first, but they respect the fact that they both somehow got on the soft side of a Kryze sister.
Bo and Satine list off all the things they don’t like about each other’s boyfriends, followed by “so he’s probably perfect for you, that explains why you’re so happy” and they sip alcohol (Satine has some nice wine from the cellar, Bo brought a beer cooler) and smile watching their boys play with Grogu.

My Top 10 Favorite Examples of Character Notices a Kid, Asks "Is anyone gonna adopt that?" and Doesn't Wait For an Answer (whether or not the kid is in need of actual adoption is not relevant information).
1.
Tumblr media
Spike and Dawn. Probably the first example that ever caught my heart. Will I ever forgive the writers for ruining the friendship between the vampire and his Nibblet? Survey says 'No'.
---
2.
Tumblr media
Alec and Madzie. HE LIKED HER GILLS. SHE TRAPPED HIM IN AN ELEVATOR SO THAT SHE WOULDN'T BE FORCED TO KILL HIM. WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT?
---
3.
Tumblr media
Anakin and Ahsoka. Or as I only and ever remember them: Snips and Skyguy. He gave her all the tools she needed to survive him and I'm going to cry about it forever.
---
4.
Tumblr media
Trixie and Mazikeen. Also known as the Demon Zoo Keeper and the President of Mars. Totally the reason Maze got that first spark that let her grow her own soul. I pity the first person who breaks that kid's heart.
---
5.
Tumblr media
Kenzi and Tamsin. Don't you just hate it when a character spends days raising the rapidly aging Valkyrie through her newest childhood and then has weird mom-feelings for the millennia old Dark Fae? I ask because I don't. I think it's THE BEST.
---
6.
Tumblr media
Penny and Don. When a character admits to being a smuggler straight to the captain of a spaceship to save the life of the kid? Instant older brother acquisition acquired. Penny go get your parents, there's a new Robinson that needs to be adopted.
---
7.
Tumblr media
Maleficent and Aurora. That unfortunate situation where one curses a toddler to fall asleep forever on their 16th birthday only to end up loving that child like a daughter and being unable to break her own curse because 'no power on Earth' can do it. Oh how the turntables turntable... 🥺. And how I just EAT THAT STUFF UP!
---
8.
Tumblr media
Crowley and Warlock. It's kinda sad how much I love this one considering there's like 5 minutes of on-screen interaction. BUT I love the angst potential of Warlock having felt abandoned by his Nanny Ashtoreth and coming across Crowley and just... recognizing him on sight.
---
9.
Tumblr media
Din and Grogu. Must I explain this one? Even putting aside absolutely every single adorable interaction... just the sheer comedy of going on a galactic 'get this kid some parents... oh wait... I'm parents?' road trip? Iconic.
---
10.
Tumblr media
Steve and... all the kids, every single one of the kids, I mean it, Steve and the whole set of the kids. Recipe for world's best babysitter - 2 tablespoons shitty advise, 1 cup protective instinct, 1 ¾ gallons nervous breakdown and a car trunk full of bats with nails.

pairing: din djarin x transmasc!reader
a/n: my apologies for such a late upload! i’ve been tired ;( also realized i made this way longer than it had to be, but oh well! i tried to take my own spin on the request!
REQUESTED BY @rottedmolarx
content: sci-fi related violence, injury, mild cursing
word count: 2.2k
premise: you and din stumble into some trouble on a bounty hunt and you get seriously hurt near the chest area. din needs to help patch you up, but he has yet to find out whatever it is that you’re hiding.
Tumblr media
Din had been out since morning returning a favor to a friend who had helped you guys out once. You knew the work involved capturing a creature of some kind and the effort would be long and strenuous.
It was dark out and you waited patiently in front of the opening with Grogu in your embrace.
The sound of the crest’s doors opening made the young one coo in your arms. He stretched his little arms out, signaling for you to put him down; someone was excited to see their father.
You smiled and carefully placed the little one down before Din came through the opening. Almost immediately, Grogu was at his feet.
“Nice to see you too, buddy.” he chuckled, tiredly through the modulator.
At once, he picked him up and you watched the adorable father and son moment.
You found their relationship to be the absolute cutest! Din was not related to the young one in any way, however that didn’t stop him from traveling and escaping to the ends of the galaxy just to protect him.
In the time that you’ve spent with Grogu, you’ve grown to feel the exact same way.
Bounty hunting for a living while also having to take care of a small child together had caused tensions to rise between the two of you. The odd family dynamic had made them bound to happen.
You would catch him stealing glances at you and even finding ways to brush up against you or put his hands on you. For instance, you passing him tools and him grabbing them from your hands and letting his fingers linger for a split second before moving on.
It wasn’t too much out of the ordinary for you to ever question, but you liked his touch.
You would stare too, though you never noticed he could see you.
You had even grown close enough for him to reveal his real name. It made you feel guilty for hiding a part of yourself, but you knew everything had to be done at its own pace.
Your eyes were laid on the mandalorian since the day you two met, but you kept to yourself. You two just completed jobs together, nothing more.
You couldn’t stop yourself from admiring him anyhow. His prowess, his strength, his monotone yet charming voice, his surprisingly humorous personality, his…quite literally everything had you thinking about him nonstop.
Not only did you admire him in those ways, but you also wished you could be a bit like him. You wished you could possess the same amount of coolness he carried.
Those two thoughts were meant to stay hidden though. You shook your head slightly as to shake away the feelings and not get caught awkwardly, staring at Din.
He looked up through his helmet and nodded as a way of greeting you. You gave him a soft smile and he carried the child to the cockpit before taking a seat in his chair. Grogu moved onto his lap, cooed again, then snuggled ever so gently into his armor. You wondered how the small one could find the beskar so comfortable.
“Got us another bounty. Hoth. This one covers weeks worth of fuel and food. You up for it?” the mandalorian asked as he turned to face the monitors and look up said bounty.
The bright, luminous screen appeared suddenly over the control panel.
You sat in the co-pilot seat and closely analyzed the bounty. She was not of human race and appeared to be of some alien species you’ve never seen before; and you’ve seen a lot.
You examined her stats and noticed there was no reason given as to why she was wanted. You figured she was affiliated with some sith lord or something.
“Yeah, what do you say we head out tomorrow?“ you asked, turning to face him.
“Alright, first thing in the morning.” he sighed as he agreed.
“You should definitely get some rest first. You’ve had a long day.” you noticed how tired he looked, even through the beskar.
“Can you really tell?” he asked incredulously.
“Oh, please. Your two sighs away from passing out.” you joked, but you both knew it was true.
“Well, you had to watch over Grogu all day. I’m sure you’re tired. Someone has to get us to Hoth.” he countered.
“Din, I may be a little tired, but I don’t mind getting us there. Like I said, you need to get some rest.” you insisted.
“Do you even know how to get us to hyperspace?” he asked in an unsure tone.
“Yes, I can manage just fine. Now go to sleep.” you ordered.
He eyed you once more, “are you sure?”
“How hard can it be?” you shrugged as you shooed him out of his seat.
Din had no choice, but to obey and he put the child to sleep before falling soundly asleep in his small cot.
༶•┈┈୨୧┈┈•༶
Only hours later, Din was awakened by Grogu’s loud cries and the crest's violent, turbulent shakes.
He immediately got out of the cot and reached for the child. He frantically searched for you before remembering you were still flying the ship.
“What’s going on?!” he shouted over the blaring alarms.
“These starcruisers started blasting us out of nowhere! I’ve been fighting them off and trying to get us to Hoth! It's not that far now!" you shouted back.
Din pressed a few buttons on the control panel, then flipped a switch that finally ended the noisy alarms.
You were struggling to keep the cruisers off and fly at the same time. Din quickly placed the child on the co-pilot seat, then took control of the huge blaster and aimed steadily as the cruisers flew in front.
"Just get us there! I got these two!" he yelled, then fired a few shots to the back of the first cruiser.
You tried to focus amidst the chaos, but with every blast the crest took, the more your worry grew and the more your concentration broke.
"We're taking too many hits!" you shouted hectically.
"We're fine!" he shouted back, not wanting to face the fact that the crest was most definitely done for.
Lucky enough, you were nearing Hoth's exosphere and Din managed to fire one final blast to the first cruiser's pilot.
The second pilot, however, remained hovering nearby and followed the crest as you dove headfirst into the planet.
The immense turbulence you faced now was nothing compared to the potent shakes you guys were experiencing just a few moments prior. You were sure you were going to crash. The crest was in horrible condition.
You tried to steer as much as you could, but to no avail. You simply let go and mindlessly, reached for Grogu and Din, so you could tightly embrace them while bracing for impact.
The crest was subjected to a harsh landing on Hoth and you three flew out of your seats.
You fell to the ground from the impact to your head and though in much pain, you smiled in relief once you noticed the child was not hurt; you held onto him pretty tight.
Din was groaning in pain beside you. He turned his head to make sure you both were okay.
"You alright?" he asked, weakly.
"Sort of, just hit my head pretty hard." you managed to respond.
He took a pause before stating, "That pilot followed us here. Bet he crashed too and is lurking around."
"I'll go." you sighed as you tried to get up, but Din placed his hand on your shoulder.
"Uh-ughn, you stay here." Din was quick to oppose.
For some odd reason, he couldn’t help the feeling of wanting to protect you even though you had put yourself in danger many times before.
"You don't look so hot, either." you scoffed, then slowly got up anyway.
Grogu cooed at your feet, and you pet his head before helping Din stand.
"Let's both get him." he said, and you couldn't agree more.
You left Grogu inside, so he wouldn't have to face the cold weather.
You gathered all the muscle strength you could while Din walked as if he felt no pain at all.
Freezing bits of snow hit your face as you two trudged through the worsening blizzard.
It was difficult to see anything; only close obstacles were in view.
Din led the way and you followed close behind, scanning for a wrecked starcruiser.
You had begun to question whether or not the pilot had really survived the fall or not. You and Din had trudged for about 3 miles already.
Suddenly, a round of blasts were fired and you took a solid hit straight to the chest. You fell onto the thick snow and Din yelled for you.
You winced in immense pain. You tried to feel for the burning flesh, but you felt almost paralyzed.
The mandalorian turned his back and surged forward before adeptly unloading his blaster and firing at the cruiser.
He heard a grunt, then trudged forward a bit to see if he was down.
“You..will never get away with the child.” the pilot breathed out.
“I already have.” Din simply said as he fired a final blow.
At once, he picked you up and trudged as fast as he could back to the crest. He was worried sick.
Your eyes were shutting as he carried you back.
He placed you on the floor of the cockpit and went to go grab the bacta spray. He came back and was ready to take off your cloak and top.
Your eyes widened before blurting out, “I’m good! I’ll apply the spray myself, Din!”
He was confused. You were injured and you always allowed him to treat you.
“You’re hurt. Let me do it.” he proceeded to lift your undershirt, but you moved his hand away.
“It’s small wound, it barely even grazed me! Now let me do it.” you excused yourself.
“It’s gonna be hard to wrap the wound yourself.” he brought up.
Shit. This is it. you thought. There’s no other way.
“Fine.” you sighed as you gave up.
Din took off your cloak first, then slowly removed your undershirt. You watched as he noticed your binder, but to your surprise he didn’t comment.
He understood now and wanted to respect your privacy.
“Here. Apply the bacta yourself, then turn around so I can patch you up.” he finally says and hands you the bacta bottle.
Your brows furrowed as you took the spray reluctantly.
“You’re not going to question me? After all this time you’ve known me?” you asked, stunned.
“You don’t have to explain to me anything if you don’t want to.” he answered, reassuringly.
“It doesn’t bother you?”
“Why would it?” he asked with furrowed brows, though you could not see.
You remained silent and slowly turned to apply the bacta yourself.
“Could you help me remove it?.”
Din complied and took off your binder for you. His hands were gloved yet his touch was still soft.
You sprayed the bacta onto your fingers and lightly massaged it on the wound. You winced as you did so.
Afterwards, Din wrapped the gauze gently around your chest and you whispered, “thank you.”
You turned back around and put your cloak on once again.
You noticed he was staring, so you spoke again, “I was not born a man and I’m sorry for not being truthful.”
Din titled his head to the side before saying, “You have nothing to be sorry for. I admire you even more for your bravery.”
You looked up at him and smiled.
“The mandalorian admires me?” you jokingly asked.
“Yes, he does.” he chuckled. “Unfortunately, he admires a strong fighter who for some reason can’t properly fly a ship.”
You rolled your eyes at him and exclaimed, “Dank ferrik, it was those cruisers’ fault, not mine!”
He let out a chuckle again and you laughed too.
“So, you admire me?”
“Your nature and determination are what I like the most.” he complimented you.
He moved from kneeling to sitting beside you on the floor.
“Without your company, I don’t know how I would’ve survived these past few months.” he confessed.
“But, you’re doing most of the saving.” you said, puzzled.
“You and Grogu saved me from a life of loneliness, c'yarika."
You smiled at the nickname, though you had no idea what it meant.
"I'm assuming that's mand'oa? What does it mean?" you asked.
"It means...darling." he replied, and your heart swelled.
"I can't believe you just called me that. Say it again." you giggled.
"C'yarika?" he wondered.
"Hmm, I like it." you admitted.
You looked into his visor for a second before placing your hand on the side of his helmet. The beskar felt cold in your grasp.
"Thank you for accepting me the way I am." you began.
"I wasn't sure if I could disclose this part of myself. The galaxy can be a cruel place."
"I see you no different than before. I like you just as you are." he confessed once more.
Before you knew it, Din had pressed his helmet so he could lift it up a bit. Only the lower half of his face could be seen.
You moved your hand and placed it on his jaw. You leaned carefully to kiss his rough lips.
He moved in and you both took in the blissful moment as your lips connected.

I absolutely love the idea of Luke being jealous of Din. He thinks Din has everything figured out, and Grogu chose him over the Jedi. So he starts off their next meeting being very standoffish towards Din. Things only get worse when Leia, Han and Chewie adore Din.
Din on the other hand thinks Luke is great. Like hey this is the guy who took care of his kid and let him go back home. The whole Luke being an asshole thing is no different than how he treats people he doesn’t know.
So the entire time it’s just Din being nice to Luke, while Luke is trying to be a jerk.

It's just a nightmare
It's a stupid thing that triggers it. A stupid, STUPID thing. And of course it is Corin's fault.
He's making dinner and gets distracted by Grogu. He completely forgets about the food until the stench of burning meat reaches his nose and reminds him with a jolt. Running back into the kitchen, Corin grabs the frying pan and mindlessly yanks it away from the heat. The intense smell of the charred remains hits him hard, makes forgotten memories stir, and causes him to abruptly drop the pan into the sink. The loud sound of metal slamming into metal combined with Din unexpectedly barging into the kitchen rather noisily to find the source of the fire makes Corin's entire body freeze. His brain lights up with blind panic for several seconds.
“Corin?” Din calls out for him, almost a little cautiously, as he takes a step closer. “Corin, are you okay?”
His heart is racing as if he's in some kind of horrible danger, which makes no kind of sense. Corin gulps for air. “I'm fine.” He mumbles, trying to pull himself together. He's acting like an idiot. “I, uh, I...” Corin clears his throat. “I burned dinner. Sorry.”
“I wasn't hungry anyway.” Din half-heartedly jokes, inching closer like he's approaching a skittish animal. “You didn't get burned, though, right?”
Corin swallows, slowly regaining control of his body again in time for him to lift his hand and look down to see the red skin where he'd held the pan. A bit of bad luck. “Nothing a little bacta can't fix.”
Din takes a hold of his hand, studies the damage done, and sighs.
A worried coo reveals the presence of the little bean. He's standing in the doorway, looking over at them with concern all over his adorable face.
“I'll fix him up, Grogu.” Din replies. “I'll look after him, I promise.”
Corin swallows down a wave of nausea. That smell... “I'm...” That smell and some loud sounds shouldn't be enough to reduce him like this. He should be stronger than this. “I'm fine.” “Yeah. I know.” Din doesn't sound convinced. He just sounds sad.
That should have been the end of it. The bacta heals Corin's hand and Din manages to make dinner that isn't set ablaze and tastes really good. Corin cuddles and rocks the little bean into a peaceful sleep. It's a stupid moment caused by his own stupid negligence, harmless and forgotten by the time Corin crawls into bed, settles on his side and Din wraps his arms around him from behind. They fall asleep curled up together. It makes absolutely no sense why, instead of sweet dreams, a horrible nightmare rages through Corin's brain, filling him with screams and blood and shadows, until he jolts awake with a gasp and his heart now racing so fast it physically hurts.
“Corin?” Din whispers from behind him.
“I'm fine.” Corin forces the words out between numb lips. He's still curled up on his side with Din behind him, which is good because that means Din can't see his face. Corin already ruined dinner today, he's not going to ruin Din's sleep as well. It was just a nightmare, after all. Not memories. Just a nightmare. There was nothing familiar about it. Just random horror. A nightmare. Bad luck. “Did I wake you? Sorry. Go back to sleep.”
“You're safe.” Din tells him instead of asking him anything. There is a light touch to Corin's shoulder. “You're here, with me, with us. You're safe, Corin.”
Corin nods, a jerky and too eager movement. “I know. I'm fine. I'm sorry.” Or, he will be fine. His heart just needs to stop racing like crazy and the dread needs to uncoil from his belly. It will pass because it always does. He's had countless nightmares before after all. It's just a nightmare.
Din strokes Corin's arm in a soothing gesture. “You're safe.” He repeats rather than contradicting Corin's words. He doesn't sound angry or annoyed, proving yet again he's among the kindest souls in the Galaxy. “Everything is okay, I promise you. You're safe now.”
Eventually Corin's breathing returns to normal and his heart calms too under Din's gentle touch and words. He tries to keep as quiet and as still as possible so not to disturb Din any more that night. Din needs his rest. But despite knowing it was just a bad dream, Corin can't get himself to close his eyes and go back to sleep. He's haunted by some irrational dread that the nightmare might start up again. There are outlines of screams removed from his brain, voices he tells himself are random or made up, and then there is that damn smell... It's been over half a day since he burned the food and yet Corin swears the smell still lingers in his nose. He stares into the darkness of their bedroom.
A couple of minutes later, Din breaks the silence with a quiet question; “Do you want to back to sleep?”
Corin hesitates. He doesn't want to make Din worry, but he simply cannot lie to him. “No.” He whispers apologetically, knowing this means Din won't sleep either because he is that good of a man.
“Okay.” Din says, still without a trace of anger or irritation. He sits up and gets out of bed, reaching out a hand towards Corin. “Come on.”
Sitting up, Corin frowns confused. “What?”
“Come.” Din wiggles his fingers and when Corin takes it, he makes him leave the bed and follow him out of the room.
“Din?” Corin asks, increasingly confused as he trails after his Mandalorian.
“I'm making you some warm tea.” Din says, with ease, as if it no big deal to do this in the middle of the night because your partner is a weak creature who can't even get sleeping right.
However, not even guilt and self-loathing stand a chance against the feelings Din brings out in him when they sit on opposite sides in the widow sill of the warm living room and look out the window. Outside they can barely make out the snowflakes, quietly falling amidst the calm darkness, while steam rises from the cup between Corin's hands. No words are spoken. Din doesn't ask him about the nightmare or try to distract him with other topics, merely sits with him in silence with nothing but their ankles touching as the sill isn't really made to fit two grown men.
Corin's gaze shifts from the snow falling outside the window over to rest on Din and his heart glows with how much he loves this man. Din is so kind, patient and selfless that not even bad luck stands a chance against him. Deprived of his sleep, Din should be annoyed, he has every right to be, but he's not. He seems perfectly content to just sit there with him, in serene silence, watching the snow fall.
And that is how, long after the tea is gone, Corin finally relaxes, the phantom smell goes away, and his eyelids grow heavy. So very heavy.
“Back to bed?” Din asks, his voice a quiet, warm caress.
Corin manages a drowsy smile and nods. He can sleep now.
“Okay.” Din gets up and surprises him yet again by backing up to him and crouching down a little. “Hop on.”
Even if he wasn't half-asleep, Corin suspects he would have been every bit as confused. Is Din seriously offering him a piggyback ride? His lips tug at a smile. “Din...” It's Corin's brain that is messed up, there's nothing wrong with his legs.
“I would carry you back bridal style, but you're heavy and I'm too tired.” Din says with a slight grin in his words.
Corin huffs a laugh. “I can walk, Din.”
“I know you can.” Din replies, but doesn't straighten up. “Now, jump on.”
Corin hesitates, as usual, torn between not wanting to burden Din further, quite literally, and the childish urge to accept the offer. He remembers when Din had carried him on his back at the Covert and how surprised he had been at meeting Din's more playful side. He really loves that side of him.
It's silly, they're too old to be acting like this, yet... Corin fights against a smile as he does as Din asks. “Don't blame me if you ruin your back.”
“You're not 'that' heavy.” Din snorts, hoisting him a little and getting a good grip on Corin's thighs with his capable hands.
Corin grins and slides his arms around him, partially to hold on and partially to simply hug him. Corin 'is' heavy, he's far from Liita-sized, but Din is strong, in so many ways, which is probably why Din carries him, physically and more, without any problem. Corin rests his cheek to Din's shoulder and smiles.
Maybe one day Corin will be able to face the root of the nightmares, maybe one day he'll be able to tell Din about them, but right now he convinces himself it was nothing but made up horrors from his stupid brain and savors Din's warm, solid presence and knows he's safe.
There are no more bad dreams that night.

Your footsteps echo with purpose as you and the Mandalorian approach the entrance of the hidden Imperial base. Beeb remains vigilant as he trails behind, his sharp sensors scanning for any signs of danger.
The air is charged with a heavy silence, and your heart is heavy with the weight of the task at hand. But you stand firm, for the Child's life is on the line, and you will not be swayed from your mission.
Your weapon feels heavy in your hand as you draw closer to the entrance, your muscles coiled with anticipation. Every step forward is a step closer to danger, but you press on with unyielding resolve.
With unwavering determination, you take each step forward, ready to confront any obstacles that may cross your path.
The entrance looms ahead, and the Mandalorian signals you to halt with a subtle hand gesture. His hands hovering over his blaster, ready to draw and shoot his eyes scanning the surroundings for any hint of danger. With a quiet motion, the Mandalorian signals for Beeb to flank to the side. Your droid moves with fluid grace, scanning the entrance for any traps or alarms with swift efficiency.
The silence is absolute, except for the soft hum of Beeb's scanners, as he moves with the stealth of a shadow. You watch with admiration as Beeb completes his task, a testament to the Mandalorian's tactical prowess.
Beeb's signal of safety prompts a nod from the Mandalorian, and you advance, taking positions on the left side of the entrance. The gravity of the mission weighs heavy on your mind, but you cast aside the distractions, concentrating solely on the objective.
Before you, the Mandalorian stands tall and unwavering, poised in front of the imposing entrance to the hidden Imperial base. His gloved hand slowly rises, rapping against the cold, unyielding metal of the door.
A scanner pops out to scan the surroundings, and without hesitation, the Mandalorian rips it apart with swift precision. The display of raw power and skill leaves you in awe, your admiration for his abilities growing stronger with each passing moment. The Mandalorian's hand clasps yours, and you two round the corner, pulling you to safety just in the nick of time. With a silent gesture, you signal Beeb to follow, and the three of you huddle in the shadows as two stormtroopers march out of the Imperial base, oblivious to your presence.
"Check the Perimeter." The Stormtrooper commands his partner trooper with authority.
With the troopers distracted, you give a subtle nod to the Mandalorian, silently communicating your plan. Your heart races with anticipation as you move with stealth, slipping into the shadows to flank the enemy. The element of surprise is on your side, and you are determined to use it to your advantage.
Your dual-phase lightsaber hums softly as you glide through the shadows, your movements a graceful dance in the darkness. The troopers remain unaware of your approach, their focus on the task at hand.
With the Force as your ally, you are like a phantom, slipping behind the troopers with ease. Your lightsaber ignites with a brilliant flash of green, its vibrant energy casting a glow across the scene.
The trooper stiffens at the sight of you, but it's too late. You move with the swiftness of a predator, your movements fluid and precise. You close the distance between you and the trooper with a single leap, your blade leading the way.
As your blade arcs through the air, the trooper raises his weapon in a futile attempt at defense. But it's no use. Your skill as a Jedi Knight surpasses his training as a mere stormtrooper, and your blade slices through his armor as if it were paper.
The trooper falls to the ground with a dull thud, his armor clanging against the metal floor. You don't pause to admire your handiwork, instead spinning on your heel to face the next target. Your senses are heightened by the Force, allowing you to anticipate the trooper's movements before he even makes them.
You dart forward with a grace that belies your deadly intent, your blade flashing in the dim light. The trooper tries to dodge, but he's too slow. Your blade connects with his armor, sending sparks flying in every direction.
In the end, the result is the same. The trooper falls, defeated, his armor no match for your skill.
The second trooper turns to face you, his own blaster raised in defense. But you are too quick for him, and you deflect his shots with ease, each bolt redirected back toward its source. The rhythmic hum of your lightsaber echoes through the silent area, a menacing sound that fills the trooper with dread.
With each deflection, you move closer to the trooper, his fear evident in his stance. Your blade dances through the air, striking fear into the trooper's heart as he desperately tries to fend off your assault.
In a moment of desperation, the trooper lunges forward, his blaster raised high. But you are a master of combat, and you easily sidestep his clumsy attack. In one fluid motion, you deliver a powerful strike that sends the trooper reeling, his weapon clattering to the ground.
Despite his defeat, the trooper does not relent, and he continues to fight with a fierce determination. But you are the embodiment of grace and skill, and you dance around his attacks with ease, your lightsaber flashing through the air like a deadly bolt of lightning.
In a final flourish of movement, you close in on the trooper and strike him down, your blade finding its mark with deadly accuracy. The trooper falls to the ground, defeated and broken. The fight is over, and you stand victorious, your heart racing with the thrill of battle.
The thud of the troopers hitting the ground reverberates through the air, and you stand still for a moment, catching your breath and calming your racing heart. But you know that time is of the essence, and you can't afford to be complacent.
With swift, calculated movements, you scan the area for any signs of alarm, making sure that your presence remains undetected. Once you're satisfied that the coast is clear, you nod to the Mandalorian, silently signaling that it's time to move forward.
You lead the way, moving with the agility and grace of a Jedi Knight. Each step you take is precise, each movement calculated as you navigate the unfamiliar terrain. The Mandalorian follows in your wake, his senses sharpened and alert to any potential threats. With a swift motion, a hinged panel opens on his side revealing the weapon, and the crackling energy dances along its length. The sight of it fills you with relief, knowing that Beeb is ready to defend against any threat that may come his and your way.
The droid rolls forward with smooth precision, placing himself between you and the Mandalorian, and the approaching stormtroopers.
His grappling cables are coiled and at the ready, glinting in the dim light of the corridor. Beeb is prepared for whatever may come, his circuits buzzing with focused energy.
The sound of marching boots alerts you to the presence of two stormtroopers, causing you to quickly grab the Mandalorian and pull him behind a nearby crate. Beeb rolls behind another crate, mirroring your stealthy movements.
The room falls silent as the Stormtroopers enter, their weapons at the ready, flashlights illuminating the darkness. You wait patiently in your hiding spot, heart racing with anticipation.
As they pass by, the Mandalorian leaps into action, his blaster blazing with deadly accuracy. The first trooper falls before he even knows what hit him, and the second meets the same fate in the blink of an eye.
Their bodies hit the ground, and the only sound left is the hum of the Mandalorian's weapon as he holsters it. You emerge from your hiding spot, ready to continue the mission.
Your keen senses pick up the sight of Beeb unleashing a jolt of electricity at the fallen stormtroopers, his optical lenses narrowing at the two troopers who had dared to threaten the safety of the Child.
"Bad guys," Beeb chides them with an electronic hum, as he continues to shock their motionless bodies. Watching his adorable antics, you can't help but let out a peal of soft laughter, a sound of amusement slipping past your lips. And is that a faint huff you hear from beneath the Mandalorian's helmet? Who knows?
Focusing on the task at hand, you pivot with swift grace, and at that very moment, another trooper steps into the room, weapon drawn and poised for attack.
You meet their gaze without hesitation, your eyes blazing with the force of your conviction. The trooper charges forward, but you are prepared.
With graceful ease, you retrieve a concealed blaster, its weight familiar in your hand. In a swift and calculated move, you unleash a lethal bolt of energy, aimed with deadly precision towards the trooper.
The blaster fires with a deafening blast, the red energy bolt streaking through the air before striking the Imperial soldier with unerring accuracy. The trooper crumples to the ground, defeated by your skill and power. Your brother-in-law Han Solo's gift proves its worth in moments like these. A sleek and deadly DL-44 blaster pistol. That man is a lifesaver at times.
You turn on your heel and catch the Mandalorian's expression of astonishment. A small smirk tugs at the corner of your lips, and you give a casual shrug of your shoulders.
The Mandalorian clearly wasn't expecting you to wield a blaster, and you relish the look of surprise on his face.
"You never know when a blaster might come in handy," you quip, a playful glint in your eyes.
The Mandalorian chuckles, his disbelief now turning into admiration. "I've seen Jedi use a lightsaber to deflect blaster fire, but you using one like that is a sight to behold." You smile at the Mandalorian's compliment, feeling a sense of satisfaction. "As a Jedi, it's important to be adaptable," you reply. "Sometimes, unconventional methods are necessary to get the job done."
The Mandalorian nods in agreement, his eyes still fixed on you. "I guess that makes sense. You Jedi are full of surprises."
A chuckle escapes your lips, the corners of your mouth upturned. "Surprises are part of our repertoire," you reply with a grin.
With your lightsaber ignited you turn to enter the other room. The Mandalorian readies his own weapons, his gaze unwavering and focused on the task ahead.
"Shall we?" Your lips curve upward in a hint of a smile as you address both Beeb and the Mandalorian.
Beeb chirps and whirs, before responding in a high-pitched tone, 'I'm always ready for action, mama.'
The Mandalorian's helmet meets your eyes, his countenance stoic, "Let's go," he says with conviction.
With conviction, you and the Mandalorian stride across the threshold into the next room. Your eyes scan the area, and you quickly spot two troopers positioned on opposite sides of the room. One stands to the right, the other to the left, their backs to you.
As you turn towards the Mandalorian, a moment of stillness hangs in the air between you. With a mutual understanding, you each take on a trooper, splitting off to opposite sides of the room. You focus on the trooper on the left, ready for battle. The Mandalorian moves to the right, his weapon at the ready.
Without a sound, you glide forward and close the distance between yourself and the stormtrooper. His back is turned to you and he is unaware of your presence. You position yourself to the side and pivot on the ball of your foot.
Your body flows with the motion as you deliver a swift kick to the back of his knee, targeting his popliteal fossa with precise accuracy.
The stormtrooper loses his balance and falls to the ground with a loud thud, his rifle clattering out of his hands. You move in quickly, taking advantage of his vulnerability, and grab his arm with both hands.
Your movements are graceful, yet purposeful, as you twist his arm behind his back, dislocating his shoulder with a swift and efficient motion.
The stormtrooper cries out in pain, but you do not relent. With a calm and focused demeanor, you apply pressure to his wrist, rendering him powerless. Your training allows you to seamlessly transition from one move to the next, leaving your opponent helpless in your grasp.
The Mandalorian and Beeb, who decided to assist the Mandalorian, make their way to your side. You stand tall, victorious over the fallen stormtrooper, your chest rising and falling with every labored breath. A whisper of the Force caresses your consciousness, and you feel the familiar tingle on the nape of your neck. Your awareness sharpens as you sense the source of the disturbance, the presence of someone pure. It is the Child. The energy in the air shifts and swirls, beckoning you to follow its trail and rescue the youngling. The energy that envelops you vibrates with a sudden intensity as if the very fabric of the Force is trying to communicate with you. And then, like a veil being lifted, a brilliant light shines through the darkness, revealing the presence of the youngling.
You can sense the Child's pure essence, a warm and comforting glow that fills you with hope and purpose. It's as if the galaxy suddenly feels less daunting, less vast, knowing that you are not alone in your journey.
Your senses flare with awareness, drawing your attention to a door. You can sense the Child's presence emanating from the other side. The Force guides your instincts, urging you to move closer to the door. With each step, the sensation grows stronger, until you can almost feel the Child's tiny heartbeat. You come to a stop, mere inches from the door, knowing that the Child is waiting just beyond.
As you stand still, attuned to the presence of the Child, you sense a slight shift in the air behind you. Suddenly, the sound of blaster fire echoes in the chamber as the Mandalorian fires upon the control panel, causing the door to slide open.
In an instant, you turn to face two stormtroopers, their blank helmets staring back at you with cold, lifeless eyes.
Beeb springs into action, unleashing his grappling cables with deadly accuracy towards the unsuspecting trooper. In a flash, he deftly rolls towards his target, unleashing a shower of crackling bolts of electricity that leave the trooper writhing in pain.
Meanwhile, the Mandalorian engages the other trooper, his movements swift and precise. His blaster roars to life, spitting out bolts of plasma that send the trooper scrambling for cover. But the Mandalorian is relentless, closing in with a fierce determination that leaves the trooper no room to escape.
You stride forward towards the man, a doctor, your gaze locked onto him. With a flick of your wrist, you summon the Force, lifting him off the ground as if he were weightless. His eyes widen in surprise and fear, and he struggles against your grasp, but you hold him steady with ease. The power of the Force surges through you, filling you with a sense of control and mastery.
"No, no, no, no, please. I didn't do anything, I kept him safe." The Doctor yells out in a panic and fear.
With a flick of your wrist, you toss the doctor aside, taking notice of a mind probe floating above the Child. Your hand rises, fingers curling into a tight fist as you focus your energy. With a surge of power, the mind probe crumples, crushed by the might of the Force.
A cacophony of metal screeching against metal resonates throughout the chamber as the fragments of the droid plummet to the ground. Doctor Pershing retreats in terror at the sight of your might, his pupils dilating in awe of your immense power. You turn towards him, your gaze unflinching.
"Explain yourself," you demand, your voice cold and commanding.
Doctor Pershing cowers from you, raising his hands in fear, "I protected him. I protected him. If it wasn't for me, he would already be dead! Please, don't hurt me. Please." A firm grip on your shoulder brings you back from the brink of your anger, and you turn to see the Mandalorian, his head slowly shaking in disapproval. As you catch your breath, you feel a gentle brush against your leg and glance down to see Beeb, his lights flickering with concern. Gradually, the overwhelming emotions that had threatened to consume you begin to ebb away, leaving behind a sense of clarity. And for the first time, you lay eyes on the Child.
Your gaze falls upon the Child, and in an instant, a flood of memories consumes you. You are transported back to a time long ago, to a distant planet where an ancient and wise Jedi Master once took you under his wing. You can almost feel the warmth of the sun on your skin and hear the sounds of the lush jungle around you. You remember the lessons, the guidance, and the wisdom of that ancient Jedi, and how it has shaped you into the person you are today.
The presence of Master Yoda courses through your veins, his teachings a part of who you are. His voice reverberates in your mind, imparting words of wisdom and guidance that resonate to this day. The air around you seems to shimmer with his essence, as if he were right there by your side, guiding you with every step. Master Yoda's voice reverberates, whispering through the very essence of the Force. "Young one, take the Child, you must. Danger here, there is."
A surge of determination wells up within you, as Master Yoda's words echo through your mind. You nod in agreement with the wise Jedi's words, feeling a deep sense of urgency to protect the innocent Child from the impending danger.
"The Empire is on its way," you declare. "Their hunger for the Child will not be satiated until they have him in their grasp. We must leave, and we must leave now. Our mission is to protect this Child at all costs."
You feel the Mandalorian's unwavering gaze upon you, despite the obscurity of his helmet. Even though you can't see his eyes, you sense the intense determination that burns within him, and it ignites a flame within your spirit. With a nod of agreement, he signals his commitment to the mission at hand, and you know that you have a steadfast ally by your side. With a swift and gentle movement, you approach the Child, feeling a sense of urgency to release him from the restraints that bind him to the hover-stretcher. Your fingers glide over the metal clamps that hold him in place, and you focus your mind on freeing him from this captivity. As you work, your heart fills with a deep sense of compassion and tenderness towards this small and innocent being, who has been so cruelly taken from his home. You pause for a moment, watching the Child's peaceful form, and you feel a surge of protective love wash over you. Without hesitation, you release the final clamp, and the Child is free.
You hold the Child tenderly against your chest, his small form a weightless burden in your arms. His little chest rises and falls in a gentle rhythm as he sleeps, his dreams a mystery to you.
Turning to face Beeb and the Mandalorian, you offer them a small smile. Though you cannot see the Mandalorian's eyes behind his beskar helmet, you know that he is watching you intently, his protective nature evident in the way he stands.
Beeb chirps softly, his mechanical whirring a soothing balm to your ears. You feel grateful for his presence, as he has been a constant companion and ally on your journey.
The Mandalorian's gloved hand rests gently on the small of your back, his touch sending a shiver through you, a feeling of safety and protection. With the Child cradled in your arms, and Beeb by your side, you follow the Mandalorian as he leads the way out of the sterile lab and into the dark, foreboding corridors of the Imperial Base.
The echoes of your footsteps fill the air as you move swiftly and quietly, every step filled with purpose and determination. You can feel the weight of the Child in your arms, his breathing steady and calm, and you're filled with a sense of responsibility, a deep need to protect him at all costs.
The Mandalorian's beskar helmet gleams in the dim light, and you can't see his eyes, but you sense his strength and resolve, his unwavering commitment to getting all of you out of there alive.
As you make your way through the winding corridors, you can feel the tension rising, the air thick with danger and the threat of discovery. But the Mandalorian's presence at your side, and Beeb's chirping encouragement, keep you focused and grounded, and you move forward with a steady pace.
Together, the four of you press on, determined to escape the Imperial Base and get the four of you to safety.

#17: CLOSE YOUR EYES, NER KAR'TA
"to be in love with you is to know that even on the days you make me so mad i could scream, i still want to kiss the hell out of your face." ⏤Beau Taplin. "it's the way you wrinkle your nose when you're disappointed in me."
a/n: y'all would not believe the trouble tumblr gave me in posting this smh anyways sorry again this is stupid long (i did warn y'all im a mouthy motherfucker) but hopefully it can make up for the absolutely heartbreaking episode we all suffered thru today :)
.
“If I asked you to kick Karga’s ass, would you?”
“Without hesitation, ner kar’ta.”
You couldn’t help but snicker under your breath at his quick answer. Din was lying reclined in the cot beside you with Grogu napping on his chest. It was an entertaining contrast. The soft father rubbing his son’s back as the child snored while promising immediate violence at a single word from you. The awkwardness of yesterday morning seemed to have dispersed after your confession to him. Add to that the fact that Nima was sleeping in a medically induced coma on the cot you sat on the edge of, and you were on cloud nine. There was still a ways to go and you hated that your close friend⏤ your family⏤ had been injured in such a traumatizing way, but her arm would be saved.
The bacta tank had healed what it needed to. It fixed bone, muscle, and tissue nearly 80%. You didn’t want to risk letting the tank manage the injury to the full 100%. Repairing hand injuries was a tricky thing simply because the tendons and muscles in the hand were so complicated. You’d rather set her hand the old fashioned way⏤ make sure she didn’t lose any function. Nima would be devastated if her dexterity was compromised. Her job, her passion, relied on her hands.
“Anything else I can add to our to-do list today other than fighting the High Magistrate of Nevarro?” Din asked with a hum.
You grinned at him. “I’ll let you know if I think of anything.”
Din nodded his head once. Your eyes glanced down at the hardware holding Nima’s hand motionless so it could heal properly. You had already adjusted them, applied a healing paste, then wrapped it, but you couldn't help but re-check your work over and over again. Your obsessive behavior came in handy when Karga had stepped in ten minutes or so ago to check in on Nima. Though his ‘checking in’ had turned into offering you a job once more. It seemed like every type of denial you had he had a counterpoint.
Your main one being that legally you weren’t allowed to practice medicine. You still had a license because the trial questioning whether or not you were ethically to blame for Soran’s death had ended in your favor. However, one stipulation⏤ which had come from a psychological evaluation the hospital made you go through after you were attacked⏤ was that until Kurt’s trial was over you shouldn’t be in the position of making medical decisions. It had been something you were more than happy to abide by as you ran from your life.
Karga’s cheeky reply had been that he was the High Magistrate and as such he could allow you to do anything you wanted to do. Especially if that thing you wanted to do was be his city’s physician.
A thought formed in your mind and you huffed out a sigh. You could see Din tilt his head toward you in question. You faced him, “Would I be crazy for considering taking Karga up on his offer?”
“I wouldn’t say crazy.” Din replied. “But why? I don’t want you to feel obligated because Karga won’t leave you alone.”
“It’s not that.” You said. The thought grew in your mind, a chaotic frenzy that wouldn’t leave you alone. “If I hadn’t been here, Nima would’ve lost her arm. She might have even died. I stopped that.” Din remained silent and let you think aloud. “I can keep making that difference. I have to. If I don’t then… If something terrible happens then isn’t that my fault?”
Din sat up, holding Grogu to his chest so the boy didn’t fall, “No. No, it’s not. Thinking like that, taking on that guilt, isn’t healthy.” He threw his legs over the side of the bed so he was sitting up and facing you. “Don’t make a decision based on guilt, ner kar’ta.”
“I guess you’re right.” You mumbled.
He stayed silent for a beat before reaching a hand out to you. You stood and took the singular step that would get you close enough to settle your hand in his. Din pulled you forward so you stood between his legs. The cot was on a lower setting which left you staring down at Din while he was forced to tilt his head to stare up at you.
“Take guilt out of it. Pretend like you’re one of many that Karga is trying to hire for this job.” Din said. You lifted the hand Din wasn’t holding so you could scratch Grogu’s head. His mid-afternoon nap would be over soon and he’d be awake and bouncing off the walls with energy. “Would getting this job make you happy?”
You pondered over the question. There was a thrill in medicine. One you quite enjoyed when you weren’t forced to care for the people who meant the most in the world to you. Plus, thinking long term, you couldn’t be Grogu’s nanny forever. It wasn’t feasible. Not that you wanted out of their lives. You were so entangled in the web of their lives that that was hardly an option anymore. But, if you wanted a real relationship with Din one day, you couldn’t be his employee. You’d have to find a different way to make credits and support yourself.
“I think so.” You nodded.
“As long as you're happy, then I think you should do it.” Din replied, but the sigh he released didn’t match the approval of his words. “I just don’t want you to make yourself sick with stress.”
“Worrywart.” You teased. Din chuckled and the rumbling in his chest must have roused Grogu. The boy began to rub his face against the metal he was lying on sleepily. You ran a finger alongside his ear. “Hi, baby boy. Was buir too loud? Did he wake you up?”
Grogu mumbled, then turned with outstretched arms. Din lifted him as you reached out. When you pulled the small child to your chest he leaned his head against your shoulder but you knew he wasn’t sleep based on the way he let his small fingers rub against your shoulder back and forth⏤ just like you and Din would do to him. Grogu was mumbling soft words you didn’t recognize.
“Mhmm, tell mama all about it.” You hummed.
Din’s hands had rested on your hips when he didn’t have Grogu to hold. His thumbs tracing circles over your shirt right above your belt. He nodded, “Do you want children of your own one day?”
Your eyes widened in surprise at his sudden question. It was the last direction you expected this conversation to go. Your jaw popped open slightly. “Uh, wh⏤what?”
“Just curious.” Din shrugged nonchalantly.
To be honest, you had never given it any thought. That was a future decision for future you to make. While in training, you told yourself it wouldn’t be something you needed to even think about until after training was over. Then when you were working in the hospital, you told yourself you needed to get settled in your job first. Finally, your life spiraled apart and during the last year that was hardly something that was on your mind. It was funny that you went full circle and all of that led you to standing in Nevarro’s clinic thinking about a future with children of your own.
Taking care of Grogu was an experience that had given you more factors and variables to consider, but still you weren’t sure what to say. You shook your head and spoke the truth. “To be honest, I haven’t thought much about it.”
“You’re so good with Grogu, is all.” Din replied.
“What about you?” You paused. “Er, that’s not what I⏤ Obviously you already have a child. You have Grogu.” Din chuckled at your babbling. “I meant, would you want… more?”
Din tilted his head and a very casual nod. “I think so. I like the idea of a big family.”
“Do you have siblings?” You asked suddenly. “I’m realizing just now that I don’t know a lot about your life before Nevarro⏤ other than Grogu and the bounty hunting.”
“No siblings.” Din shook his head. “Not by blood at least. After I was brought in by the Mandalorians, as a foundling, I grew up with a few other kids I considered to be siblings on Concordia.”
“Wait, you were a foundling? Like Grogu?”
“Yes.” Din nodded. “I was born on Aq Ventina, but when I was young… My town was destroyed in a Separatist attack. Battle droids destroyed everything. They… I lost my parents. I would’ve been killed myself if a Mandalorian hadn’t saved me.”
You stepped around him so you could sit down on the cot beside Din. He followed your movements with his t-shape visor. You lifted the hand not holding Grogu to settle on his knee. “Din, I am so sorry. I had no idea, I⏤ I wouldn’t have asked⏤ I shouldn’t have asked⏤”
“It’s alright, ner kar’ta.” Din chuckled and set his hand on top of yours. “I knew you didn’t know, but I wanted you to know. Besides, I started this line of questioning.” He squeezed his fingers around your own. “I know you said you were from Naboo. Can you tell me more? Do you still have family there?”
You fell into a casual conversation with him telling him about the family you still had there. Sharing a few memories that couldn't help but slip out when they came to mind. You felt bad that you were talking about happy memories when Din had just admitted to a tragedy, but he continued to ask question after question leading you into them. Which led to him sharing a few memories of his own from both worlds that he walked. Din lingered on a story about his parents⏤ a happy one he held close to his heart based on the soft tone he spoke in.
“How much do you remember of them?” You asked.
“Enough to know they were good parents.”
“I’m sorry you didn’t get to spend more time with them.” You replied softly.
In response, Din lifted the hand on top of yours to bury it in the hair at the nape of your neck. He leaned you toward him and set his forehead against yours. The two of you only remained that way for a moment before Grogu sat up and rested one hand on your cheek and the other on his father’s.
“Skraan.” He blurted. Din and you broke apart, laughing, but Grogu was solely serious as he repeated himself. “Skraan, skraan, skraan.”
Tumblr media
Din knew what he had to do. The part he was struggling with was the how. Oddly, in his mind, the first step was going to be the hardest bit. Steps two through whatever included taking the N1 out to Mandalore, find the living waters, bathe in said living waters, bring back proof to the Armorer, be redeemed in the eyes of his Covert, return to you as a full fledged Mandalorian rather than Apostate, and request to court you properly. Simple. Easy to remember. Din didn’t even need to write it down. However, step one involved telling you that he was leaving Nevarro and that was going to be tough.
At first he thought he’d just bring you with him, but then you told him you wanted to try being Nevarro’s physician. Din couldn’t pull you away from your home right as you had grown comfortable enough with your past to retry medicine. So, that was out. Then, when he had worked up the courage to say good-bye, Cara quit. That one had caught Din off guard. It happened days after Nima’s accident. Cara claimed she got an offer to be part of special forces with the New Republic⏤ an offer she couldn’t turn down. She even took the time to remind him that this was never a permanent thing anyways.
However, Cara left in the dead of night without even taking the time to wait until Nima woke up. Din didn’t believe that was a coincidence. He was more than familiar with the concept of running from emotions. When Nima finally did wake up, the look of heartbreak on her features when he had to answer her question of where Cara was had been tough to handle. Din reminded himself that his plan was not the same as Cara’s. He was not leaving you to stay away. Din was not running from you. If anything he was running to you. He just wanted to be the very best version of himself before propositioning you, and Din wanted to do this right.
Before he left, he was going to explain this to you⏤ in great detail. And, if you truly meant what you said about allowing him to uphold his Creed, you’d understand. Din repeated that to himself over and over again like a mantra.
Regardless of how that played out, Din was stuck. It was one thing when he was leaving Nevarro short one marshal temporarily. Now the city would be missing him and Cara, and in good conscious he couldn’t let that be.
Mayfeld, hands laced behind his head as his feet were kicked up on his desk, called out. “Come on, Mando. What? You don’t trust me to hold down the fort while you’re gone?”
“Exactly.”
“Uh, ow.” Mayfeld complained. “You could’ve at least pretended to think about it before answering so fast.”
Din chuckled under his breath. Honestly, his relationship with Mayfeld had come a long way. How he felt now was a stark difference in comparison to how badly Din wanted to shoot him in the face when they first met. After what happened on Morak, after revealing his face in front of Mayfeld, Din truly respected the man⏤ trusted him. The truth is he would never forgive himself to leave Mayfeld here to deal with all the responsibilities alone. That wasn’t fair to his friend. All those facts didn’t deter Din from mocking and mildly bullying the man though. That was much too fun to give up.
“I have a friend flying in today to baby-sit you.”
“Nice. Got me a nanny too?” Mayfeld replied. “Hope she’s as pretty as yours.”
Din knew the man was only trying to rile him up, and he technically had picked the exact topic that could do it. But, Din didn’t take the bait. He shrugged. “He’s not really my type, but I’ll let you make the call on that.”
“Alright. So I’ll be the Marshal, and he’ll be my Deputy?”
“No. He’ll be Marshal, and you’ll still be Deputy.”
Mayfeld dropped his feet off the desk, hands falling to his side, and his jaw popped open in shock. “Hold on! The new guy gets to be Marshal before I do?? You’re just gonna promote him over me? Immediately.”
“Exactly.”
The man scoffed in response and crossed his arms like a petulant child. It reminded Din of the way Grogu would pout when you told him you couldn’t snack on cookies or cakes right before dinner time or when Din would wrestle a full sized critter out of his son’s mouth before Grogu could swallow it whole. Mayfeld shoved up from his seat to cross the room and pour himself a cup of caf. Din stayed where he was⏤ leaning against Cara’s old desk.
“You tell your girl that you’re leaving yet? Or is that still a secret?”
“I’m going to tell her.” Din said firmly.
Mayfeld slurped out of his mug, purposely trying to annoy him, “You said that four days ago, then three days ago, then two⏤”
“Keep talking and I’ll demote you from Deputy.”
“Is there even a level below deputy??”
“I can make one.” Din replied dryly. A wide grin crossed Mayfeld’s face and Din shook his head with a grumble. “Today. I’ll tell her today.” Mayfeld just stared at him from above the rim of his mug. Din pushed off the desk. “I’m going to do it.”
Mayfeld shrugged in response and Din resisted the urge to throw something at the man. He huffed and turned to leave. Mayfeld called out behind him, a teasing comment, and Din threw him a crude hand gesture over his shoulder causing the man to burst out in laughter.
It barely took him any time to get from the station to the clinic. When he stepped through the front doors he was greeted by Aayla and one other worker he wasn’t familiar with. The Twi’lek waved him in and hit a button on the desk to unlock the backroom doors. It was the sound of your voice that greeted him first.
“⏤and if you pull those staples out, you’ll be dealing with me.” You stood at the end of a bed with your hands on your hips and your face drawn in concentration. Aayla had found and wrestled you into a white coat when you started and Din would be lying if he said he didn’t like the look on you. Din especially liked watching you take control of a room. You could command a scene with voice and stare alone, and Din really, really liked watching you do it.
“Baby girl,” A vaguely familiar voice chimed and Din frowned at the nickname, “Dealing with you would be my absolute pleasure.”
Din stepped further into the room to see that a worker from the hanger, a Trandoshan man he couldn’t recall the name of, was sitting on a cot with a long cut from wrist to elbow. A line of staples was holding it closed. Din crossed his arms and tilted his head. “Yeah? How about dealing with me?”
The Trandoshan looked to him at the same time you did, and he found it comical how different the reactions were. Your face split into a bright, gorgeous smile while the hangar worker stiffened up and averted his eyes.
“Well, hi there, Marshal.” You cooed and stuck your hands into the pockets of your white coat.
“Do we have a problem?” Din asked, trying to keep the amusement out of his voice.
You turned to look at your patient and raised an eyebrow in question. The Trandoshan glanced at him before looking back to you and shaking his head rapidly. You nodded and reached out to set a hand on Din’s forearm. “I think we’re okay here.”
“Can⏤ Can I⏤?” The worker pointed to the door.
“Yupp. Keep it dry. Come back in a week, and I’ll see if you’re healed enough to take the staples out.”
The Trandoshan jumped up but paused when he realized he was going to have to pass Din in order to get out. Even though Din was technically blocking the way, he kept his position so the man was forced to squeeze around him. When the man was finally out, your laugh filled the air and Din sighed in admiration. You shrugged, smile still in place, “That was kind of fun.”
“How’re you doing?” Din asked.
“I’m okay.” You nodded and then scrunched your nose once. “It’s so weird. I’m still not used to this, but at the same time I am?” You motioned around yourself. “It’s familiar, but it’s not. Am I crazy?”
Din shook his head, “Of course not.”
“Hmm,” You took a step closer to him so you had to lift your face to meet his visor, “I think you’re biased.”
He grinned under his helmet then shrugged. “Maybe.”
“So, what can I do for you, Marshal?”
“Have you had lunch yet?” He asked, and you shook your head in response. “Can I walk with you to get some? You aren’t busy are you?”
You shrugged out of your white coat and tossed it onto a cot. “That’s the beauty of working for a man who is super desperate to keep you around. I can do what I want.” Din chuckled and followed you out of the room. As you passed the front desk, you called out, “Aayla, I’m going. Just call me if any real emergencies come in. Okay?”
“You got it, doc!”
As you both stepped out, Din offered you his arm and you slipped yours through it. He nodded back toward the clinic. “Who is the new girl?”
“Miriam.” You answered. “Aayla is training her to work the front desk so I can train Aayla. She’ll be able to help me with little stuff. I think she’s got a lot of potential.” Din nodded toward a stand merchant who greeted him first. “We’ll be able to see more if I have an assistant, but we still can’t do any routine kind of work. Karga still needs to get another physician to work that side of things.”
Din hummed. “I hear he’s working on it, but I’ll… encourage him to work faster.”
“Oh, don’t worry about it.” You shook your head. “I can be plenty annoying on my own. You should’ve seen how much I bothered Admin back in Coruscant when I wanted them to buy the emergency department a whole set of ultrasounds.”
Din could imagine the scene and he wished he could’ve seen it. He’d have to make sure he had a front row seat for when you began to hound Karga for this. Without even discussing it, it seemed you both had the same sandwich place in mind⏤ the one that sold the cookies Grogu liked. Din didn’t bother ordering for himself. He wasn’t overly hungry. He mostly just wanted to spend time with you and make sure you took a break to eat. Din watched as you greeted the owners by name and after ordering your food you ordered a pack of cookies for Grogu as well. He could barely even pay attention to the conversation at hand because he was so busy watching you.
Even when the owners offered you the meal for free as a thank you for taking the job in town, you insisted on paying the full price. As you walked out, you frowned at him. “Are you sure you don’t want something to eat?”
“I’m fine, ner kar’ta.” He replied. Din planned finding a bench where you could sit and eat⏤ you had commented about how much you loved the current weather this morning⏤ but the sound of his communicator made him groan.
“What’s going on?” You asked.
Din lifted his vambrace to see he was being hailed to the hanger. “Oh. I have a, uh, friend visiting today. He’s here early.”
“Really?” Your eyes widened.
“Yeah. I’m sorry. I have to go meet him.”
Din had begun to pull his arm away, but you kept your grip around it and briefly bit down on your lower lip drawing all his attention to the shape of the lips he loved so much⏤ the lips that haunted his every dream. You pleaded, “Can I please come with you?”
“You want to?” Din was surprised.
“Yeah!” You bounced in place. “I’d love to meet your friend. I mean, if that’s okay?”
“Always. You should start eating while we walk.” Din nodded.
You snickered. “Okay. Bossy.”
Din’s eyes snapped to you, and he chuckled. The two of you changed direction toward the hanger.
It wasn’t like you weren’t going to meet Cobb Vanth eventually.

The week had gone shockingly well. Better than you could’ve hoped, but then again your expectations were incredibly low. Working in the emergency clinic was actually enjoyable. Karga had tried to rope you into doing everything, but you put a hard stop on that for obvious reasons. Nevarro was still relatively small so when it came to emergencies⏤ there really were not many emergencies. Only a patch up job here and there like with the Trandoshan this morning. Again the bar was low considering you started this job with Nima nearly losing her arm.
Nima had been doing very well physically, but, as much as she tried to hide it, emotionally she had taken a toll. You weren’t sure why Cara left so abruptly. Din and you had talked about it in depth one night after dinner and he seemed to think it was because she had cared too much for Nima too fast. The only opinion you had on the matter was that Cara had certainly gotten on your bad side. You were loyal to your oldest friend and it irked you beyond belief that the once deputy of Nevarro had left when Nima needed her most.
“Where’s your friend from?” You asked as Din and you neared the landing pad.
“Tatooine.”
“Ah, my neck of the woods.”
Din chuckled. “Were you even there long enough to call it your neck of the woods?”
“I lived in Mos Espa for at least half a year. In Tatooine years, that feels like a decade.” You replied and the laugh that left him made your cheeks warm.
He glanced over at you, your arm still looped through his, “What made you choose Tatooine, anyways?”
“It’s kind of a depressing answer. Definitely a mood killer.” You winced. Din’s feet came to an abrupt stop and he turned so he was facing you entirely. You should’ve guessed he’d have that kind of reaction. You shook your head. “I took care of a patient who said Mos Espa was where lowlifes and runaways escaped to when they had no other world to call home. So…” You shrugged. “I went to Mos Espa.”
“Ner kar’ta⏤”
“I don’t feel that way now. A lot has changed, and I’m not the person who initially fled to Tatooine,” You said quickly, “But you asked why I went, so I said.” With your next words, you kept your voice low so only he could hear you. “I promise I’m okay, Din.”
Din gave you a curt nod. With an amused shake of your head, you slipped your arm through his once more and tugged him toward the landing pad. The Mandalorian warrior let you drag him along, and you could’ve swore he was dragging his feet on purpose to make it more difficult for you. The chuckle that left his helmet confirmed this for you.
“How long is your friend staying for?” You asked, and Din stayed quiet. “And is his visit a social call? I imagine he’s heartbroken being away from the sands of Tatooine.”
Din’s feet came to a stop once more, but this time it came as a surprise. You paused with him and gave him a curious look. He tilted his head. “About that, I wanted to talk to you about⏤”
“Mando!”
You and Din both turned at the voice. Walking in your direction was a very familiar face. Cobb Vanth? The marshal of Mos Pelgo was a far way from home, but he looked no different than the day you last saw him. His signature red scarf around his neck acting as a homing beacon for your eyes. Vanth’s eyes were initially focused on Din, but then they dragged over to you and he shook his head in surprise.
“Little lady!? Is that you??” Vanth grinned.
Din and you both snapped to look at one another again rather than the new arrival. At the same time, the same words left your lips. “You know Cobb Vanth!?”
Vanth spread his arms out as he continued to approach, a large duffel bag hanging from his back, “Well, ain’t this a surprise!”
The shock wore off and it finally occurred to you that Cobb Vanth was here. Right here, right in front of you. You let out a laugh and rushed to meet him halfway. He greeted you by wrapping his arms around you in a tight grin⏤ a laugh leaving him as well. What felt like another lifetime ago, you had met Cobb Vanth on your arrival to Tatooine. Though your plan had been to settle in Mos Espa you had accidentally ended up in Mos Eisley. In an attempt to get from one place to the other you got lost in the desert briefly after the land speeder you rented ran out of fuel halfway. It had been your fault for trusting the man you got the speeder from. Rather than dying you were saved by the man you were now hugging. Vanth had even been kind enough to get you to Mos Espa eventually.
You pulled away from Vanth. “It’s so good to see you! You look great.”
“Oh, I know, darling.” Vanth winked. “But still not holding a flame to you.” You chuckled and a hand settled on your shoulder. Din had walked over and you took a step back so you stood right beside him. Vanth motioned to the Mandalorian. “You never told me you knew Mando.”
“I didn’t back when I was with you, Vanth.” You glanced between the two men. “How do you guys know each other?”
Vanth readjusted the bag around his shoulders. “Now that, little lady, is quite the story.” He continued on talking about how Din came looking for a Mandalorian and found Vanth decked out in Mandalorian armor. He followed it by describing how Din ended up flying into a krayt dragon to kill it from inside out. A detail you did not love to hear. “We’ve been best buddies since. Right, pal?”
Din didn’t respond. You were still in awe at the coincidence of it all. You missed your Mandalorian by literal months. Din had swung through Mos Pelgo right before you had. What would’ve happened if you met him then rather than now?
“Mando?” Vanth questioned. Waving his hand once in front of the helmet. “You alright?”
“I’m fine.” Din replied and you wondered where the tension in his voice had come from. You slipped your arm around his once more and he seemed to relax marginally. He cleared his throat before nodding. “How was your trip, Vanth?”
Vanth’s lips stretched back out into a charming grin. “Hey, I can’t complain. Gotta say Nevarro looks better than I thought it would. I’m excited to explore it.” He chuckled. “The weather ain’t too bad either. I was worried I’d miss that desert air.”
“Don’t worry. These lava plains are plenty hot enough.” You replied. “How long are you here for?”
“Suppose 'til Mando here gets back.”
It took a second for the words to register in your mind, but Din picked it up much faster based on the way his entire body tensed once more. Until he gets back. Gets back? You slowly pulled your arm away from so you could turn and look at him. Before your hand could fall away entirely, Din caught it with his own⏤ holding it against his arm.
“Wait⏤”
“You’re going somewhere?” You furrowed your brow in confusion. He hadn’t mentioned anything about a trip. Din paused and somehow his hesitance irritated you. “Where?”
Din sighed. “Mandalore.”
Your eyes widened, “Manda⏤ The Mandalore that may or may not be poisoned still?”
“Um. Yes.”
“Okay.” You replied. “Alright.” You pulled your hand out from under Din’s hand and shot Vanth a quick, firm smile. “It was really good to see you, Vanth. Welcome to Nevarro! I guess I’ll be seeing you around.” Din took a step toward you, his nickname for you leaving his lips, but you took a step back. “I need to get back to work, but I’ll see you at home?”
You didn’t give him the chance to answer and turned to leave. If Din called out after you, you didn’t hear him. Your footsteps were rushed as you tried to wrap your head around the information you had just learned. Were you angry? Maybe. It wasn’t a clear cut anger though⏤ it was muddled. There were too many other emotions swirling in your head, but the main one that started to push to the front was disappointment. Every time you thought you understood where you stood with Din it seemed like something happened that made you question it all. Had he just planned on leaving the planet without telling you? Or maybe he wanted to wait until the last second and just wave to you as he took off, or hang a note on the fridge for you to find the morning of. Even if you weren’t in this weird back and forth romantic thing with him, as someone who literally lived in his home and helped care for his child you were incredibly involved in his life. If you were a team, then you needed to know the plan.
More irritation boiled up in your blood, and you found yourself changing direction from the clinic to a familiar house. Your fist was banging on Nima’s door before you fully even registered what it was you wanted to say. Nima opened the door, in her pajamas, and your eyes glanced at the metal brace surrounding her right arm out of habit.
Nima deflated and whined, “Please, please, please, please tell me you’re here to clear me for work.”
“No. Two more weeks. I’m not changing my mind on that.” You replied and she groaned. “I’m here because apparently Marshal Mando is leaving the planet and hired a replacement marshal but didn’t think to tell me any of this.”
“Come on in. I have alcohol.”
Tumblr media
“I told you! I told you⏤ didn’t I tell you??” Mayfeld cried then spun to look at Vanth who was leaning against the wall. “I kriffing told him. Days ago.”
“Please stop talking.” Din groaned as he hung his head back while slouching in the seat. Din thought that the worst part of learning you and Vanth already knew one another would be the tight hug you literally ran to give him. Vanth had pulled you up off your toes in the hug, and the primal side of him yearned for a fight. His hand literally twitched toward his blaster⏤ his kriffing blaster. As if he was going to shoot down his good friend Cobb Vanth who left his town to do him a favor.
Din had a problem. He was a problem. Growing up the way he had, with the losses he faced, he tended to be possessive of what he considered his own. Din liked to think over the years he had gotten good at reigning that behavior in. He didn’t shoot Vanth, after all. Still, that side of him didn’t hesitate in rearing it’s ugly head in moments like when he watched Cobb Vanth hold you for what he considered to be a second too long. It wasn’t until your arm slipped through his, a soft smile on your face, that he felt the logical side of him slip back into control.
Then, of course, it all went downhill when Vanth accidentally admitted the thing he had yet to tell you. Watching that smile fall off your features, feeling you try to slowly pull away, felt like he had taken blunt force trauma to the chest. It physically hurt and left a raw, aching wound and it only got worse as he watched you walk away. Din put the pain pretty high on the list of ones he experienced, and this was coming from someone who had a job that led him to be stabbed repeatedly.
“I am sorry about that, Mando.” Vanth spoke up.
“It’s not your fault.” Din straightened his posture and shook his head. “I should’ve told her ages ago. That’s on me.” Vanth had apologized to him multiple times during the walk from the tarmac to the station. He’d do so between asking questions about the town that Din was supposed to be giving him a better tour on. Din rested his elbows on knees. It dawned on him that there was a question he hadn’t asked in his distress. “How do you know her?”
Vanth crossed his arms. “It was a couple months after you left, actually. She got lost between Mos Eisley and Mos Espa.” Din’s eyes widened at the thought of you getting lost in that Maker forsaken desert. Vanth chuckled. “Her land speeder ran out of fuel. It was by pure chance I ran into her. She stayed in Mos Pelgo for a few days then I took her the rest of the way to Mos Espa. We stayed in touch though⏤ here and there.”
Briefly, Din wondered what his life would’ve looked like if the two of you had been in Mos Pelgo at the same time. It was a curious thought but he knew both of you had been different people at that time. Even if it, in the great scheme of things, wasn’t that long ago. Less than a year. Then again, as quickly as you had wormed your way in his heart he couldn’t imagine meeting you months ago would’ve been that different. Din sighed and stood, he grabbed a holopad off the desk remembering that despite his dilemma in breaking your heart today he still had work to do.
“Yeah.” Vanth hummed. “Little lady and I didn’t see each other often, but she’d visit me or I’d visit her for the occasional hook up.”
Din’s head snapped to glare at Vanth and, in an attempt to ensure his hands were free, he slammed the holopad back down onto the desk⏤ ignoring the tell tale sound of cracking glass. Vanth’s lips curled up into a mischievous grin and Din was half tempted to drag him back to the tarmac and ship his ass to Tatooine. Mayfeld burst into laughter and Din just shook his head.
“Sorry, brother.” Vanth chuckled. “I saw how up in arms you got out on the tarmac. Couldn’t help myself.”
“Hilarious.” Din replied.
Eventually, Mayfeld and Vanth wandered out so the newest temporary marshal could get acquainted with the town and meet Karga. It gave Din a couple of hours to work though he spent most of it internally spiraling over the moment your entire face fell. He hated that he had been the cause of that⏤ just because he had been too scared to fess up. His communicator began to go off and Din answered it.
“Hi, Marshal?” A woman’s voice said. Din confirmed who it was. “This is Ms. Wynn, I’m in charge of Grogu’s class. Everything's still fine, but class ended about twenty minutes ago and I haven’t seen you or Soran. Is everything alright?”
Din shoved up from his desk’s chair. “I’ll be right there.”
On his way out the door, he called Aayla at the clinic to see if you had just gotten caught up with a patient, but the woman claimed she hadn’t seen you since he took you out for lunch. The clinic had been quiet otherwise. Din’s stomach churned uncomfortably as he hurried to pick up his son. Were you alright? Or were you so upset that you refused to even care for Grogu? Din knew the moment that thought crossed his mind that he was wrong. Regardless of how upset you were with him, you’d never take it out on the little boy. Din just hoped you were okay.

You narrowed your eyes at Nima as she downed the last of her beer, “Is this all you’ve been doing all day? Drinking?”
“Well, I can’t work, so…” Nima shrugged. When she offered you a drink you had turned it down, technically still on shift as the physician, but she hadn’t stopped from drinking herself. You had come here to rant about Din, but as it turned out you both had plenty to complain about. For hours, you and her had sat on the back porch of her house . The last thirty minutes or so you were trying to pry information out of Nima about how she felt about the Cara situation, but the mechanic would simply shrug it away. You knew she was hurting more than she claimed though. “Do the skies look gross to you?”
“What?” You blurted and slumped down in your seat.
“The sky. It looks…icky.”
You peered up best you could, and in her defense icky was probably the best word. The day had started clear, but the sky now had a greenish tinge to it. It reminded you of the beginnings of a storm, but you couldn’t see any clouds. You leaned out further to look and by doing so it gave you a clear view of Nima’s kitchen through a side window where you saw a clock resting against her wall. 3:37. Dank farrik. You jumped up.
“Karking⏤ Grogu!” You panicked. Shit, shit, shit. “Stop drinking, Nima.”
She mumbled a confirmation that you didn’t firmly believe then started sprinting back to the center of town. You had never, ever been late to pick up Grogu before. Guilt gnawed at you imagining Grogu looking for you in a crowd of parents and not being able to find you. Maker, how could you lose track of time like that? You got to the school in record time to find that all the kids were gone. Ms. Wynn was cleaning up around a room and she said Din had come and picked him up about ten minutes ago.
As much as you wanted to avoid Din for a little while longer, you needed to see Grogu so you could apologize to him. On your way in you passed Mayfeld and Vanth who were standing in the lobby. They both raised their hands to greet you and you blew past them without preamble. You were a woman on a mission.
“Grogu?” You called out, searching the room. Faintly, you could hear Grogu calling back to you and he waddled into the room a second later. You breathed a sigh of relief and knelt down to scoop him up into a hug. “I’m so sorry, baby. I am so, so sorry.”
“No sorry.” Grogu hummed giving your cheek a small pat making you chuckle.
The sound of a throat clearing had you glancing up to see Din leaning against the doorway that would lead back to his office. You were in an odd position because you were still upset at him from leaving you in the dark, but you were also ashamed and embarrassed at missing Grogu’s pick up time.
“Hi.” You mumbled awkwardly.
“I’m sorry.” Din blurted. Your eyes narrowed. Was he not going to address the ‘you abandoned Grogu’ thing first? “I should’ve told you sooner that Grogu and I are going to Mandalore.”
You slowly stood up with the cooing child in your arms. “You and… You’re taking Grogu?? To Mandalore??” If he heard the rising anger in your voice, he didn’t show it. “The planet that, again, we don’t know is even habitable?”
“Of course. Where I go, he goes.” Din shrugged nonchalantly. You blinked once, and Din finally seemed to catch onto at least one of the thoughts you had. “I want you to go, but I can’t pull you away from Nevarro. Not when you just started working in the clinic, and if I did choose to leave Grogu here that would just be added stress for you.”
Right. Because worrying about Din and Grogu on some wasteland of a planet wasn’t a stress factor. You locked your jaw and let out a slow breath through your nose. The boy in your arms seemed to latch onto the tension faster than his father did based on the worried looks he was bouncing between the two of you. Finally, you found your voice, “I forgot Grogu at school. I lost track of time. I⏤”
“It was an accident, I know. I’m not mad.” Din said calmly.
He wasn’t mad. Din wasn’t mad, and somehow that made you even angrier. A part of you wondered if he was purposely not showing any anger in an attempt to keep you from being angry. One mistake for another mistake. Tit for tat. Maybe he was trying to make up for the fact that he knew he upset you, but you hated the calm demeanor he still seemed to carry. It occurred to you then, that you wanted him to be angry. You wanted to argue. The Mandalorian in front of you was the picture perfect example of composure and it pissed you off.
“You’re not angry.” You enunciated each word.
“Of course not, ner kar’ta.” Din shook his head. He drifted closer. “We should talk more about this trip⏤”
“Why?” You shrugged and pasted a large smile on your face. If he wanted to be composed then you’d be composed too. “I should check on the clinic one last time before heading home. I’ll take Grogu with me. Get as much time with him as I can before you boys go on your little adventure.”
Din shifted his weight from one foot to the other, a nervous tic you usually only saw at home, “Yeah. I might be late getting back. It looks like there might be a volcanic ash storm rolling in soon. Nevarro hasn’t seen one since before the guild left here.”
“No problem.” You said. “I’ll see you at home.”
Din began to take a step toward you, but you turned on your heel to leave with Grogu. You knew you were being petty, but right now you didn’t really care. If the two of you were playing mistake for mistake then this seemed fair too. You were petty to him and he didn’t tell you that he planned to leave you alone on this planet without him or Grogu. Tit for tat.
Tumblr media
Din watched you leave with the sinking feeling that the interaction between the two of you had not gone well. Mayfeld stepped in with an incredulous look while Din continued to just stand with his arms crossed over his chest.
Mayfeld scoffed and motioned behind him, “How in the hell did you make it worse?”
Din mumbled a string of curses in every language he was familiar with and pushed past Mayfeld to leave. The man fell into step beside him. As much as he wanted to chase after you, he needed to help get the city prepped for the oncoming storm. Mayfeld, never able to take a hint, shook his head, “I mean, geez Mando. How is it you can string up a quarry in seconds, but can’t figure out how to apologize to a woman?”
“Where is Vanth?” Din asked, ignoring Mayfeld’s own line of questioning.
“Walking your girl to the clinic then home.”
Din locked his jaw. That was good to hear. He wanted to be the one to walk you and his son back to the safety of your shared home, but considering the circumstance he was just glad you weren’t alone. Din ordered Mayfeld to take the eastern side of the city and warn all citizens to bring in or tie down their outdoor belongings while he took the west.
He didn’t get it. Had you wanted him to be angry at you? Din was a little peeved, it’d be a lie to say that he wasn’t. He had to leave work to pick up Grogu despite you taking on that responsibility this morning. Since starting at the clinic, you and him had taken turns, but Din liked to know beforehand so he wasn’t just up and leaving the station. If an emergency happened, where you were needed with a patient, that was more than understandable, but that hadn’t been the case. You had just lost track of time. A very human mistake to make, and honestly it was your first when it came to Grogu. So, yes, Din was a little peeved, but he wasn’t angry.
Din pushed it out of mind. You knew the truth, and he could better explain himself tonight when he got home. Right now, he needed to focus on the task at hand.
According to Karga, the volcanic ash storms were quick but deadly. The closest volcano would spew out a hot and devastating breath of ash. It’d roll over the city, blanketing everything in darkness, but it usually was blown away and gone in a matter of hours. Din had heard plenty about them, but they had never occurred while he was planet side. As long as there was proper prep to begin with then it should be a smooth transition. Karga, ever the planner, had built the city buildings with proper metal shields to roll down over windows and doors in the case of a storm. Everybody would stay indoors for a half a day, and then they’d spend the rest cleaning up.
Din wondered if his helmet was equipped to withstand the ash. It should be. The beskar and his flight suit would keep the hot ash from burning his skin, and if his helmet worked correctly then the filter should keep out most of the dangerous ash. He only wondered in case he needed to venture out to save a citizen or two. They were making the rounds to tell everyone that staying indoors was an order, but Din knew with his luck one or two people would ignore the warning.
It took hours to ensure the entire city was ready to be locked down and make sure that Vanth found his place and that it worked for the man. Din had simply housed him in Cara’s old place. It was still furnished and it wasn’t like Vanth needed anything permanent. The storm was still being estimated at being 24 or 36 hours out. It would give Din, Mayfeld, and Vanth time in the morning and afternoon to run through the city once more for final checks.
“Hey,” Din called out as he stepped into the house with a sigh. When he rounded the corner he noted that you were in the kitchen alone and cleaning up. He glanced around, “Grogu?”
“Bathed and in bed.” You replied without missing a beat. “It’s late.”
“Yeah, sorry, getting the city prepped took longer than I thought it would.” Din groaned. “How was⏤”
“I have leftover dinner for you.” You interrupted him and motioned to the stove. “But I figure you’ll want to clean up first.”
Din nodded in relief, “Thank you.” You gave him a tight nod, a smile that didn’t reach your eyes painted your lips, and he paused before heading back to the shower. “Hey, you’re not going to bed are you? I wanted to talk.”
“I’m not going to bed.” You shook your head.
“Good.” Din turned and hurried off. From the moment Vanth let slip that he was leaving, Din had been craving to sit down next to you and explain everything. He wanted to take your hand in his and reassure you that everything was going to be okay, they wouldn't be gone long, and it killed him to leave you behind. Din wanted to explain that he was leaving to find redemption and revenge. Though, he wasn’t quite sure how you’d handle that information.
As Din washed the day off of him, he wondered how you’d feel about that? If he told you the absolute truth that he planned to find redemption in part so he could court you. If he told you that he planned on tracking down Daelar to rip the man’s throat out. He wasn’t positive how you’d handle either fact, but he was positive that he needed to tell you. Din was human, he made mistakes, but he made it a mission in life to not make the same mistake twice.
After getting dressed, Din carried all his armor, sans his helmet, into the room to set aside. He paused long enough to check in on Grogu and tuck the blanket thrown haphazardly around the hammock around the boy’s small body. “Nuhoy morut'yc, adi’ka.” Din readjusted the stuffed frog in Grogu’s hammock with a smile and left the room as quietly as possible. A nervous energy settled along his skin and he rolled his shoulders once, “Ner kar’ta?”
The kitchen was empty and Din titled his head in confusion at the finding. His eyes landed on a plate of food waiting for him on the island counter and drifted closer. Sitting beside the plate was a small note with the most passive aggressive of all smiley faces he had seen drawn.
‘Went out with Nima. Don’t wait up’.
Din aggressively tore his helmet off and the only thing that kept him from slamming it onto the counter was the knowledge that the sound would wake up Grogu. His nervous energy melted into irritation. Sure, he hadn’t clarified that he wanted to talk when he asked if you were going to bed, but Din knew his intentions had been clear. That’s why you had deliberately answered his question in such a specific manner. His hands clenched and unclenched as he took a slow and steadying breath.
He wasn’t angry. He wasn’t. Din repeated this under his breath in an attempt to convince himself of it.
Tumblr media
It was funny. The last time you sat in this cantina with Nima, in these exact chairs, the two of you had also been talking about Din. The subject last time was how awkward it was to tiptoe around him in his own home. Mashal Daddy, is what Nima had called him last time.
“Marshal Dickhead.” Nima scoffed before taking the shot in front of her. She pushed your shot glass closer to you and you tossed it back as well. The liquid burned the entire way down and you grimaced. It had been ages since you drank to this degree⏤ you were a light weight now. “That’s what he is.”
You shook your head. “No, he isn’t.”
“Okay, I need you to work on your shit talk.” Nima pointed at you. “Defending the person you’re complaining about is kind of redundant.”
You tapped your glass and the bartender wandered back over to pour the both of you another shot which you took without hesitation. Nima tried to get them to pour another, but you shook your head and ordered two mixed drinks instead. At least those had something other than straight liquor in it.
“I’m pissed at him, but I don’t wanna shit talk him.” You replied.
“Then what do you want to do?”
“I don’t know.” You sighed. “I want to fight.” Nima gave you a questionable look and you shook your head. “Not physically. Maker, I don’t have a death wish.” Picking to tussle with a Mandalorian could possibly be the stupidest choice in the galaxy. “But I want to argue with him.”
Nima narrowed her eyes. “Why?”
“Because I⏤ I⏤” Your words got caught in your throat and you tried to wash it down with a large swig of your drink, to no avail. It was dumb to want to argue, wasn’t it? Couples tried to avoid that. Not that the two of you were an official couple. You groaned and buried your face into your hands⏤ already feeling dizzy from the drinks. You wanted him to be upset with you, to feel comfortable enough around you to show that he was upset. Up until now, the two of you hadn’t had any real arguments. Sure, there were little tiffs here and there about nothing important, and it typically always ended with Din conceding the point with a shrug. Despite what most people seemed to think, you knew that towering wall of beskar had emotions. He had a lot of kriffing emotions, and you wanted to see all of them. Even the negative ones.
“I think I get it. The ‘wanting to argue’ thing.” Nima said softly. You lifted your head to look at her and she gave you a small smile. The Twi’lek reached out to set her hand on your shoulder with a comforting squeeze. “You want to have hot, angry make-up sex.”
Despite the sullen thoughts weighing you down, her words made a loud laugh slip from your lips. Nima look affronted that you were laughing at her theory, but you just shook your head and let the laughter die down to chuckles.
“I was serious.”
“I know you were. That’s why it’s funny.” You replied and took another sip of your drink. “But, I think I want to have not angry sex with him before I go for the other stuff.”
Nima’s eyes widened, “Wait, you guys haven’t⏤” You shook your head. “What the kriff are you waiting for!?”
“I don’t know.” You admitted. It was a fair question. “I think we’re going slow.”
“But, why?” Nima replied. “It’s obvious the two of you wanna jump each other’s bones. Half the city thinks you’re already married to him.”
You furrowed your brow, “Yeah, why is that? I get that the evidence stacked against us is damning, but to just assume we’re married?”
“Oh, I’ve been telling everyone the two of you are married.” Nima replied.
“What? Why??”
“I don’t know.” Nima shrugged. “Seemed fun. Figure it’ll be true one day.”
You scoffed, “Well, it won’t be if he disappears on the cursed world of Mandalore.”
The words fell out of your lips with more pain than you meant to convey. Nima’s face fell and you lifted your drink to knock back the rest of it. That was a possibility, wasn’t it? Din and Grogu leave you to never return. Then what? You live in the house you shared with them alone? Listening to the ghostly echoes of where they used to be?
“Shots.” Nima called out to the bartender. “We need more shots.”
The two of you were four more shots in when a familiar face wandered toward you. Vanth leaned against the bar on your other side with a smile that you could tell was concerned. “Hey there, ladies.”
“Whoa, whoa, whoa, buddy!” Nima drunkenly lifted herself from her seat, nearly toppling over, and pointed at Vanth. “We aren’t interested. She’s married,” Nima pointed to you then pointed back to herself, “And I like pussy.”
Vanth’s eyes widened and you dragged her back down into her seat. “First, stop telling people I’m married. Second, stop announcing to the bar that you like pussy. And, third,” You motioned for Vanth to take a seat beside you which he did, “This is Cobb Vanth. He’s a friend from Tatooine and the replacement Marshal while Di⏤ Mando is gone.”
In your own tipsy stupor, you had nearly said Din’s name aloud. Luckily, Nima was too gone to notice and Vanth didn’t seem to care. He leaned over to over his hand in greeting. “It’s nice to meet you…?”
“Nima.” She replied curtly and held her hand out like a queen offering it to a peasant. You rolled your eyes, but Vanth just changed the position of his own hand to take hers with a small shake.
“Nima.” Vanth said. “Can I buy you two drinks?”
“I insist you do.” Nima nodded and pulled her hand away.
You chuckled with a shake of your head and tossed back the rest of the one in front of you so Vanth could get you a fresh one. Nima was babbling about something mechanical that you couldn’t follow along with and directing her words to anyone who glanced her way.
“I’ve already apologized to Mando, but I feel like I owe you an apology too.” Vanth said. “I’m sorry about what happened on the tarmac.”
You snorted. “It wasn’t your fault for assuming Mando wasn’t keeping secrets.”
“I don’t know if I’d call it a secret.” Vanth shrugged, catching the bartender’s eye and holding up three fingers. He turned back to you. “I think the poor guy was just scared.”
“Mandalorians don’t feel fear.” Nima blurted out from behind you, apparently a part of the conversation now.
You shook your head. “I don’t care if he was scared as long as he tells me that he is.”
“Fair request.” Vanth shrugged. The drinks were brought over and you took a small sip of yours. The tipsy buzz floating in your skull was slowly shifting to just plain drunk, and a sadness crept in alongside it. You suddenly wished you were at home curled in bed⏤ curled in his bed. Listening to the soft snores of both him and Grogu. “So,” Vanth’s voice snapped you out of Din’s dark and safe room and back into the noisy cantina, “Where does that leave the two of you?”
“She’s dropping his ass.” Nima barked.
“Nima⏤” You whirled on her.
“You don’t need him! He’s abandoning you!” Nima cried and you took in the way her lower lip quivered for just a moment. “We don’t need either of them! They can⏤ They can go explore the kriffing galaxy or join the New Republic’s special forces team or whatever it is they want to do! We don’t care. We’re better than that. We don’t need them.” She turned and shook her head before taking a large sip of her drink. “I’m better off without her.”
You reached out, wordlessly, and pulled her hand away from the glass so you could hold it. Nima tangled her fingers with yours and squeezed once⏤ hers eyes glistening with unshed tears. You knew she had taken Cara’s departure worse than she wanted to admit. Nima was right. She didn’t need Cara. Nima was strong and beautiful and smart and incredible. Cara had been a friend but she had also been a bump in the road. She left selfishly when Nima needed her most, but Nima was going to rise above it. However, she had been wrong about you.
You did need Din. That’s why the thought of him leaving Nevarro was so jarring and painful. Coming here had been a way to escape your past and hide out, but you had never expected to find someone who would grow to be so important. Honestly, it was a bit scary if you thought about it for too long, but the truth was that you needed Din in your life. Him and Grogu. Without them, you’d have a gaping hole in your heart and you weren’t sure there was anything else in the universe that could fill that. Din hadn’t fully explained his reasoning, you hadn’t given him the chance, but you knew he wasn’t leaving you. Nima had been blindsided by Cara and left with nothing. Maybe it would’ve taken him forever, but Din wouldn’t leave without saying good-bye and you knew⏤ deep, deep down⏤ that he’d fight tooth and nail to return to you.
“I’m sorry to ruin your night, Vanth.” You said, “But I think we’re gonna call it quits.”
“Don’t be silly.” Vanth shook his head. He tossed back his drink before rising himself. “I’ll walk you ladies home.”
You gave him a thankful smile knowing you were in no state to navigate to Nima’s house in the dark, put her to rest, then find your way back home yourself. Vanth chose to help Nima walk considering you had at least a little better control over your legs. The three of you stumbled out of the cantina into the warm night air⏤ it was time to go home.
Tumblr media
Din didn’t have the time to put all his armor on, it was nearing one in the morning when his communicator went off, so he had simply thrown on the upper half of his flight suit, gloves, and boots. It left him in one of the more ridiculous outfits he wore considering his sweatpants did not match any item he adorned, but he just needed to get the door.
When he swung it open, Vanth stood on his porch with you in his arms sleeping soundly. He nodded toward your figure, “She was wide awake when we dropped off her friend, and was doing decent on the way here, but by time I reached the end of you street she was dozing off on her feet.”
“Thank you.” Din mumbled. He was quick to step forward and take you into his arms⏤ not enjoying the way you were snuggled into Vanth. Though he did appreciate the man bringing you home. “I really do appreciate this.” You shifted so you could bury your head into the crook of his neck and Din sighed. “Was she… How was she when you found her at the cantina?”
Vanth didn’t answer at first. He stared at Din for what felt like a long moment before looking at you then back to him again. Vanth chuckled, “I know I’m new to town, brother, so take this with a grain of salt.” He shook his head. “But it’s obvious she cares about you as much as you care about her. A fight now and then is normal, but don’t let it go on for too long. You don’t get time wasted back.”
“Thanks for the tip.” Din mumbled.
Vanth gave him a quick nod before turning on his heel and leaving. Din shut the front door with his foot and carried you through the quiet house until he reached your room. The thought that you spent the night drinking until you were too inebriated to get home yourself bothered him more than he wanted to admit. You were a grown woman who could do what you wanted, but you had gone to specifically avoid talking to him. He found that incredibly annoying.
It was like you were purposefully trying to rile him into lashing out, and that’s the last thing Din wanted to do. Din had a temper, but back during his bounty hunting years that was easily handled. He’d get angry, he’d go hunt a quarry and burn that emotion right out of himself. Now, he was in a setting where he didn’t have an outlet and he worked hard to keep that temper under wraps. Din had lashed out at Karga a time or two since his arrival, but that was expected and Karga was no stranger to his anger.
Din settled you on your bed and began to carefully take off your boots followed by your socks and pants. He kept his gaze off your lower half as his only goal was to make you more comfortable. He stood and pulled your covers up to tuck you in. Din paused for a moment before pulling his helmet off and tucking it under one arm. He ran a hand through his messy hair and sighed. Maker, you were driving him up the wall. You had no idea the kind of fire you were playing with. It’s not like you were in danger, Din would tear his own heart out before hurting you, but he didn’t want to yell at you.
“Ni aalar sha yaim ti gar.” Din sighed aloud. A reminder. He leaned forward to press his lips against your temple. Din would not lose his temper with you because he could not afford to lose you. He turned off your automatic alarm sitting on the night stand by the bed and wished you the same farewell he had to Grogu earlier in the night. “Nuhoy morut’yc, ner kar’ta.”
Tumblr media
The headache you woke up with was nasty, and you swore in that moment to never drink again. Probably a fruitless promise to yourself, and not the first time you had claimed it, but right now you were miserable. You groaned and rubbed your face in your pillow before sitting up with a grunt. There was a weird amount of sunlight in your room and not just in ‘my poor hungover eyes are overly sensitive’ kind of way. You rubbed your face, glancing around, and it was then you realized the alarm sitting by your bed was off.
“Shit.” You breathed and jumped out of bed. The sheets tangled around your lower leg and you hit the floor with a curse. First you forgot to pick Grogu up from school and now you’d be late to taking him to school. Maker, you were so stupid. As reliving as it had been to drink and talk to Nima last night, it hadn’t been worth it for this. The speed in which you got dressed was startling and you burst into Din’s room to find it empty.
Your hungover brain realized much too late that this could’ve been bad if Din were in here with his helmet off. “Grogu??” You hurried out of the room and into the hall. When you stepped into the kitchen you were met with the smell of food and the sound of babbling. Grogu sat in his high chair eating with his father right beside him dressed and ready for work. “Grogu.”
“Ma!” Grogu greeted briefly before diving back into his food.
Din turned to stare at you and you rubbed your face in embarrassment, “I’m sorry. I don’t know why my alarm wasn’t on.”
“I turned it off.” Din shrugged. “Vanth brought you home late. Figured you needed to sleep in.” Din rose from his seat and began to try and clean Grogu up from the mess he had made of breakfast. “You’re fine. I can take Grogu to school this morning.”
“What?” You gaped in disbelief.
“What?” Din echoed.
“You hired me to take care of Grogu while you worked and I am failing at that right now.” You spat.
Din scoffed. “Failing is a bit dramatic. You made a mistake. It happens.”
“I show up passed out from drinking on a work night, and your response was to tuck me in and turn off my alarm??” You said as your voice began to raise. “Seriously??”
“Wasn’t a work night.” Din replied calmly. “I wasn’t on schedule.”
You groaned in frustration, “That’s not the damn point, Din!”
“Then what is the point?”
“The point is you’re supposed to be upset! You’re supposed to be angry!” You snapped. Grogu cooed nervously from his seat and you bit back as much of your anger as you could. “It’s a normal human response. Why can’t you just admit that you’re angry at me!?”
Din set his hands on his hips and shook his head. “Why do you want me to be angry at you so badly?”
“Because I want you to be human around me!” You snapped.
Din stiffened, and as much as you hated the way you worded that, you thought maybe it would be the line that pushed him over the edge. Instead, he just gave you a tight shrug. “Sorry. I didn’t realize I wasn’t being human around you.”
“Really?” You laughed in broken disbelief. “You’re not even going to react to that shitty thing I just said?” Din remained silent. “Whatever. I’m taking Grogu to school.”
“You don’t have to do that⏤”
“Actually, I do.” You replied sharply and scooped the boy up from the chair. Grogu reached up to set a hand on your face and you sighed⏤ momentarily finding peace. When your gaze lifted up to spot Din once more the peace fell away. “It’s my job. Remember? Might as well do what I was hired to do while Grogu is still in Nevarro.”
Din didn’t respond. He stood stock still. Enough so that a stranger could walk in and confuse him for a droid. On your way out, you scooped up Grogu’s bag by the door and hurried out. There was a sharp, acidic tang in the air that greeted you and you flinched at the smell. The sky was uglier than it had been yesterday, but you were already late so you pressed on.
The entire rushed walk to school, you spent it apologizing to Grogu for yelling at his father in front of him. You shouldn’t have lost your temper in front of the child. As if he understood the situation entirely, Grogu babbled along with you and continued to give your face small pats of reassurance. Right outside of the school, Ms. Wynn stuck her head out to greet you.
“Hey, Wynn. I am so sorry about yesterday and for being late this⏤”
“Hurry, get in.” She grasped you by the wrist and tugged you inside. She shut the door tightly behind you and you glanced around the room to see all the children being kept busy by the other school workers. You gave Ms. Wynn a confused look and she sighed. “The storm is coming sooner than everyone thought. The watch people are estimating it to hit city center in the next twenty minutes or so. You can’t be outside.”
You shrugged, “I can get to clinic in fifteen.”
Grogu wiggled and whined in your arms so you set him down so he could run off to play with his friends. Ms. Wynn shook her head. “No. It’s not worth the risk. Volcanic ash storms are incredibly dangerous. The entire city is locking up right now.” You still thought you’d be able to make it, but before you could argue further your communicator began to beep. “I’ll let you take that. I need to start class.”
You nodded and watched her walk off before activating your communicator. “Hello⏤”
“Ner kar’ta?” Din’s voice crackled to life⏤ panic evident. “Where are you and Grogu??”
“At school. Wynn just locked us in for the storm.”
“Good.” You heard Din breathe out a breath of relief. “Just stay there until the storm passes. It should be over by this evening.” There was an awkward pause of silence before he cleared his throat. “If you need anything, call me. Please.”
“I will.” You replied. Then added, “You’ll be safe at home, right?”
“Yes.”
“Good.” You hummed. “I’ll, uh, talk to you later.”
The call ended miserably and you wandered to the side of the room where you could drop into a chair. The good news was you wouldn’t have to worry about Grogu like some parents probably worried about their kids. Minutes later, the sound of strong wind and debris rattled the metal sheet covering the window you sat by. It made you jump in alarm and you silently thanked Wynn for stopping you.
That had come much sooner than twenty minutes.
Tumblr media
You had to applaud Ms. Wynn and the other workers for their tenacity. The storm outside sounded miserable and terrifying, but the kids seemed nonplussed by it with the way the teachers distracted them. Around the end of the first hour, Aayla contacted you to ask about a few people who had wandered out into the storm and then stumbled into the clinic. Most of the injuries had been superficial⏤ the exposure short term as they came from nearby buildings. You walked her through how to mix some paste for burns.
It was during the second hour that the patients got too complicated for Aayla.
“I don’t know what to do, Doc.” Aayla’s voice shook. “I keep having him use his inhaler, but after a few minutes he ends up needing it again.”
“I’m worried he’s scorched his lungs. His asthma making it that much worse.”
“Do I mix a paste? Or⏤ Or make a solution?”
You sank in your seat. It was a solution that needed to be made, which you trusted Aayla to do, but that fluid then needed to be aerosolized. That way the patient could breathe it right into his lungs. Working with the machine that did so was tricky and even you weren’t the best at it. You hated the idea of getting Aayla to attempt it only to make a mistake and take on that guilt herself. She was still new to medicine. That kind of guilt shouldn’t be weighed on her conscience considering she hadn’t been trained for this.
“What’s his oxygen status right now?” You asked.
“It’s in the mid-80s and that’s with an oxygen mask on.”
Dank farrik. He might not make it to the end of this storm. The patient could crash much sooner than that. You gave Aayla a few orders to keep the man stable then pushed to stand. You caught Wynn’s attention and the woman drifted closer after helping a child with a small task. She gave you a warm smile, and you returned a skeptical one.
“Hi. So, I need a jacket, scarf, and some sunglasses.”
Wynn warned you against your idea, but you were dead set. You had no choice. So, ignoring her advice, you pressed on. You soaked the scarf in cold water then wrapped it a few times around your mouth and nose to use as a makeshift filter. The glasses would hopefully at least protect your eyes a little, and the jacket was to cover up the remainder of your skin. You were thankful you hadn’t worn shorts today.
You had traveled to the back door to leave that way none of the ash would slip into the same room as the kids. It would take you 15 minutes to get to the clinic. It was now or never, you supposed.
Tumblr media
Din was furious. His temper running hotter than the volcanic ash whipping around him. As it turned out, his helmet would keep out the dangerous conditions surrounding him. Grogu’s teacher had reached out to him to let him know that you had traveled out into the storm to reach a patient. She had done so to ensure that someone else was aware of the situation. Din had thanked her before rushing out himself.
He asked one thing of you today. One.
He just wanted you to stay inside the kriffing school with Grogu. It wasn’t asking a lot considering the literal fire and ash raining outside. It was common sense for someone to stay inside. Din was literally just asking you to follow common human survival instincts, yet you still left. You left, not protected in beskar as he was, but rather dressed in a wet scarf and jacket. As if that was going to help a karking thing.
Din tried to hail you over the communicator but it never got through. He told himself it was because of the storm. If even a little ash got into the communicator it’d glitch. That had to be it. Din refused to believe anything could have happened to you. Still, fear mingled with his rage, but he chose to ignore that for the time being.
Black and gray wind swirled around him, whipping his cloak in every direction, as flickers of burning ash drifted in the air. It was so thick that he could barely see a few feet in front of him. If he wasn’t careful, he could step right over you on accident and not even know it. The thick ash was beginning to settle on the ground in thick piles like the snow of Hoth. When he reached the clinic doors, he saw the metal shutters were down. Din didn’t hesitate to slam his hand against the metal as hard as he could.
If nobody opened the door soon he’d break through the shutters. Sure, ash would collect in the clinic lobby, but he’d deal with that problem later. Luckily for everyone, the shudders cracked open and Din quickly slipped through. Miriam, the new girl, had opened the door for him. Din didn’t mean to blow her off, but he sped past her. She was clever enough to open the second set of doors without him having to have asked.
Inside the room, were a few people sitting on the cots or against the wall with a pink paste rubbed into splotches on their skin. Aayla stood in front of an older man who was struggling to breathe. A nebulizer, the same kind of machine that blasted a mist of medicine for Grogu, was being held up in front of his mouth.
“Where the kriff is she?” Din snapped.
Aayla nervously stiffened in place. She pointed out of the room, “There’s a small break room down the hall. She’s⏤She’s in there.” Din spun to leave, but Aalya called out to him. He nearly ignored her until she spoke again. “I think she’s more injured than she lets on. There’s some leftover pink paste from the last batch for her skin burns. Right now, she’s using the other nebulizer.”
Din huffed out a small thanks before snatching the jar off a side table and following her instructions out of the room. He wasn’t familiar with the back halls of the clinic, but he didn’t need any more clues to find you. Halfway down the hall he could hear a barking cough. Din picked up his pace then threw the break room door open hard enough that it slammed into the wall.
You startled where you were sitting at a table with a nebulizer mask held in front of your face. Your eyes widened in surprise and you opened your mouth to begin to say his name only for you to begin coughing violently. Just for a moment, his anger subsided. Din hurried over and set a hand on your shoulder to evaluate your injuries.
“Injuries. What’s wrong?”
“Just⏤ Just some burns.” Your voice was hoarse. “Worst of it⏤,” You began to cough again, “Lungs. In my lungs. Medicine will help.”
You took a few more deep breaths of the nebulizer and Din let his eyes trace your exposed skin. There were patches of mildly burned skin on your hands and on your forehead and upper cheeks. The pattern made it clear to see the shape of the sunglasses you had worn. Din tore off his glove and threw it aside rougher than he intended. Your eyes widened but you didn’t say anything. Din dug his fingers into the paste and began to rub it over every single burn he could see on you⏤ no matter how small.
When he was appeased that he got every single injury, Din shoved the jar aside angrily and huffed, “Are you out of your damn mind?”
“No.” You replied. Your voice already sounding better. “It’s not like I had a choice.”
“Excuse me?” Din narrowed his eyes at you.
“I had a patient who needed me.” You shrugged. Then, you had the audacity to roll your eyes and mutter under your breath, “Just relax, Din.”
Din pushed to stand so fast that the chair he sat in went sprawling back and you jumped at the sound. He set his hands on the table and leaned toward you. “Relax? Did you just tell me to kriffing relax??” You stared at him silently, and Din took a step back with a shake of his head. He scoffed. “Relax.” Din felt his blood boiling under his skin. “Bic ni skana'din.”
“Din⏤”
“No.” Din snapped. “You’re going to sit there, and you’re going to listen to me.” He leaned in once more. “You wanted me angry? Well, now I’m angry! Dank farrik! What the kriff were you thinking!? I told you to stay in the school. I made myself very clear.” He slammed a hand down onto the table in frustration. “Do you realize how badly that could’ve ended?!”
You set down the nebulizer mask, “Din, I had to⏤”
He reached out to snatch the mask from the table where you set it and forced it back into your hand. Din shoved your hand up so it was holding the mask by your mouth once more. “No, you didn’t. Those patients look fine in there.”
“The old man wasn’t.” You snapped back with a glare of your own. “He might not have made it till the end of the storm.”
“Was there a chance he could’ve?”
“I mean, I guess, but there was just as equal of a chance that he wouldn’t. I⏤”
“Then that’s the risk that gets made.” Din yelled. “You don’t risk your life like that ever again. Do you hear me!?”
“I’m a physician!” You cried. “What would you have me do, Din? Risk him dying⏤”
“Yes.” Din reached out and wrapped his hand gently on the side of your face. Din was breathing hard, his rage making him shake, but he kept his touch soft as he forced you to face him. “That’s exactly what I would have you do. I don’t give two shits about him, but you I can’t live without, ner kar’ta. Is that not clear to you!?”
You shook your head. “You don’t mean that. You wouldn’t risk him dying.”
“Wouldn’t I?” Din let out a harsh laugh. He wouldn’t risk one of the citizens of his city dying. In your shoes, he probably would’ve done the same thing⏤ but that wasn’t the point. Din sucked in a sharp breath trying to get back to the point he was making. “If I tell you to stay put, in order to keep you safe, you will listen to me. Do you understand?” Your eyebrows furrowed deeper and Din understood the immediate distaste for his words, but he didn’t care. “I said, do you kriffing understand?”
The nebulizer stopped on it’s own and you tossed aside the mask before standing up with a scoff, “I understand, but I’m not promising you I won’t do the exact same thing again.” You tried to walk around the table, out of his reach, but Din mirrored your movements and met you on the other side to block you in. You shook your head. “This is my job. Helping people is what I do. I’m not going to put people at risk just because you don’t trust me to be competent enough to succeed.”
Maker, you were the most frustrating woman⏤ Din’s hands found his hips as he leaned into your space. “You think it’s a trust thing?” He barked out an angry laugh. “All it takes is one mistake, one miscalculated step, and that’s it. It’s not about competence or about trust. It’s about gambling, and I’m not going to let you gamble your life away for a stranger.”
“As if you’ve never gambled your life for a stranger before?? I highly doubt that.” You spat. “Din, you’re a good man and if you think⏤”
“No.”
You narrowed your eyes. “What?”
“I said, no. I’m not.” Din said through clenched teeth. You were going to be the death of him. He was vibrating with frustration. Fear grabbed control of him at the realization that this was who you were. You were good, to your core, and this was going to keep happening. It was clear on your face that you didn’t believe his words. You weren’t getting this, and Din wasn’t good enough with words to get you to. Resolution settled in his mind, determination, and his next words came out in a low growl. “Close your eyes.”
You blinked almost owlishly. “Huh?”
“Close your eyes, ner kar’ta.” Din demanded, his hands traveling to his helmet without pause. Your eyes widened in alarm before shutting tight. It scrunched your features up. Din tore his helmet off and slammed it onto the table before closing the space between the two of you.
Din had never kissed someone before, which seemed ridiculous considering the other acts he had performed, but the idea of it seemed easy enough. His hands found your jaw and he tilted your head up enough that he could press his lips firmly against yours. Din held them there until he felt your entire body slowly relax. He pulled back just a bit and opened his eyes to see your features had softened though your eyes remained closed. Din’s nose brushed against yours, unable to bring himself to pull away from you any further. He mumbled the next words out, exhausted, but tightened his grip around your face in hopes to get his message across loud and clear, “I am not a good man. I’m a selfish man, and there is nothing I wouldn’t do⏤ no line I wouldn’t cross⏤ to keep you and Grogu safe.” Din leaned his forehead against yours and sighed. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry I kissed you without asking permission. I just… Ner kar’ta, I cannot lose you and I didn’t know how to…”
“It’s okay.” You mumbled. “I‘ll forgive you on one condition.”
“And that is?”
“Kiss me again.” You breathed. You wrapped your arms around his neck, pulling yourself up to your toes, and Din didn’t hesitate to meet you halfway. His lips pressed against yours once more, but this time it wasn't so simple. It was messy, for lack of a better word. Your lips moved against his, furiously, and Din mimicked every action. It was as if the anger of your argument had shifted and transformed into this moment right here. Teeth clashing against teeth, tongue pressing against tongue. The kiss was desperate and felt like a battle. You versus him in a competition to devour the other, and Din was never one to back away from a challenge.
He hooked his arms under your legs, lifting and turning, so he could set you on the table. Din’s hands shoved aside the nebulizer machine that sat in the way and he heard the device clatter against the tile floor. He’d buy the clinic a new one. Din pressed into you forcing you to either catch yourself by reaching back or continue clinging to him. You chose to keep your arms around his neck, wrapping around even tighter, and Din had to readjust and wrap his arms around your waist to keep you both from collapsing onto the table.
Din took a chance by nipping on your lower lip and the moan that left you was the perfect reward. He licked into your open mouth, a similar action you had done to him, and it deepened the kiss once more. Finally, breathlessly, Din was forced to pull back just enough to get air. You were panting as well⏤ the only sound in the room being the heavy breaths you shared between one another and the howling storm outside.
“I’m sorry I forgot to pick up Grogu.” You said and the disappointment in your whispered words made his chest ache. “I’m sorry I left last night instead of staying to talk. I’m sorry for yelling at you this morning.”
“No, I’m sorry.” Din replied. “All of this could’ve been avoided if I had just told you about Mandalore. I also promise to get more angry at you if you promise it’ll always end like this.” The soft, breathy laugh that left your lips was like a reassuring melody. You were safe. You were in his arms. You were okay. Din let out a breath of relief. “Ner kar’ta…”
You tilted your mouth against his to let a soft kiss linger against his. The exact opposite of the kind of kiss the two of you had shared. You sighed, “Why did it have to come to this? Why wouldn't you just admit you were upset with me?”
“I… I was worried about scaring you away if I lost my temper.” He admitted. “Things felt so good between us, so perfect, I didn’t want to ruin it.”
“Telling me how you really feel is never going to ruin anything, Din. I want that. I want to know what you’re thinking.” You replied. “Fighting isn’t always a bad thing.”
Din pressed his lips softly against yours once⏤ twice⏤ three times. “I can see that.” Maker, maybe taking his helmet off was a bad idea. After getting to feel your lips against his it was going to be twice as difficult to maintain his control. “I need to put my helmet back on, ner kar’ta.”
You chuckled and set a soft kiss against his cheek before releasing him. Din took one more second to stare at you, unhindered by his visor, and he loved the way your lips were swollen from his. He grabbed his helmet and tugged it back on. When it was back in place he let you know. It was cute the way you peeked out of only one eye, just in case, before letting both open.
“I think I’m ready to talk about Mandalore now.” You shrugged. “Unless, you have something better to talk about?”
Din chuckled and gave you a small shrug. “We can talk about how you were my first kiss, if you’d like.”
“I am?” Your eyes widened. “Seriously?” He nervously gave you a small nod⏤ face burning under his helmet. “Oh man, I am so sorry. If I had know I would’ve⏤ would’ve⏤ I don’t know. Been gentler?” Din laughed at the concern drawn all over your face. Your lips twitched up but you gave him a small shove. “I’m serious! Maker, I was basically going for your tonsils…”
Din lifted a hand to hold your chin. “I’m not complaining.” He leaned his cold forehead against yours. “And by the way, I am proud of you. I’m so proud of everything you do. I… Can you promise to at least call me before you do something risky?”
“Yeah.” You nodded. “I can promise that.”
Din would take the victory where he could.

Anyone else low key crying over how far Grogu’s come? He feels comfortable and safe enough to act up and play and use his force abilities openly which is very different from him in season 1 because he knows that Din won’t hurt him and will encourage him (minus the acting out part lol) and it just melts my heart sorry for the ramble
It's so very wonderful to see how both him and Din have grown thanks to their relationship with each other. They've changed so much and all for the better! I absolutely adore it!

modern day private detective & assistant au dinluke
Din is a former fugitive recovery agent turned private detective after adopting Grogu, who he found during a case. He still uses his wide connections to find work big or small. He rents/freeloads/??? in a 3-story building owned by Boba. He and Grogu live on the 3rd floor, Din's detective office is 2nd floor and 1st floor is Boba's hybrid cafe-bar.
Luke, struggling college student studying folklore and mythology, works in Boba's cafe part-time. After saving Grogu by smacking a potential kidnapper in the face with his textbook, he becomes the occasional babysitter. Generally cheery and friendly, but will not hesitate to punt point a rude customer out the door. (He knows Boba won't mind)
The progression of Luke and Din's relationship is "Oh Boba's new hire" to "Cute barista that remembers my order" to "Grogu's emergency babysitter" to "Luke that comes in just at the right moment to deliver me free coffee"
Din and Luke are friends, Boba's impressed that Luke managed to befriend Din so quickly and vaguely suspects him of witchcraft (but as long as it brings in cafe customers who cares???)
Soon, Luke spends most of his break up in Din's office, with free coffee brought as an offering, chatting about casual things, and listening to Din vent about the case he's stuck on. And Luke, with his great intuition, often makes remarks that give Din his breakthrough.
Except the thing is, the supernatural exist in this world. The are creatures, there is magic, and the Force kinda exists too. Over half the things Luke is studying??? Yeah, it's real. Hidden, but real. And all those utterly baffling cases Din sometimes got??? Supernatural ties to them. And Luke??? Luke absolutely recognized that and half of his "very intuitive" remarks are him giving Din explanations or hints to gloss over the supernatural portion that Din had no way of knowing.
Eventually, Din finds out that A. magic is real and B. Grogu is not full-human. Oh and C. he attracts all these supernatural-linked cases. So, Luke becomes his supernatural expert who... also may have powers????
Please just weary, private detective Din forever reluctant to accept the supernatural with his sunshine, weirdgirl assistant Luke that will absolutely punch a demon, and the adorable toddler Grogu who clearly has pointed ears and floats shit.
Din trying to solve the missing statue that seemingly teleported across the city and Luke coming in with the supernatural lore of the week. It can be as small, fun mysteries to terrifying shit like an impossible murder caused by Monkey’s Paw. If anyone knows Tokyo Babylon or xxxHolic mix of modern day cases and mysteries with supernatural elements!!

More dark din head canon? I kinda missed ut
I love Dark Din Content! I've needed to sit back and think about this because I haven't touched it in a while...I need to get back to my horrible, feral roots of making everything terrible with this.
So, let's see...what about Dark Din who doesn't fall for Luke at first? Like how I was tempted to do with Blooms but it didn't quite go to the level of Dark I wanted cause I felt like it wouldn't have matched the story to that point and wouldn't have been fair to Luke/Readers/The Plot?
I've considered doing another multi-chapter story of where Din is like a dark (but still good) king of Mandalore and he has to work together with a Force-user to rescue Grogu...but he makes it clear he hates this guy and would gut him if he could except he needs him. Luke is just vibing along as normal. Then he just makes things click in Din's head of "oh, I can never let him leave me"--like now it's a Blooms meets Little Bird type of situation
Once in love, Din would be feral over Luke. He would plot to keep Luke trapped on Mandalore. There would be an unspoken law that Luke Skywalker can never leave the world or there would be absolute hell to pay.
Luke would just be going about enjoying his time, thinking all of this is temporary, and wow it is weird his ship keeps having trouble, and he'll be sad to leave but he needs to do stuff and this family needs time to themselves, and Mandalorians still don't like Force-users...all the while there is a marriage being plotted and he has no idea.
Now, the things this Dark Din does:
-slowly begins to replace the few pieces of clothing Luke has with prettier and things of better quality. It starts off with just tunics and pants that are more like gifts and to help him fit in and have things that are just nicer in general. But then they become prettier, more feminine, and something that just common civilians of Mandalore would wear...even better than Clan Leaders or noblemen would have.
-is trying to slowly erase his connections, as few as they may be, to anything outside of Mandalorian space. No one really needed to know of Luke Skywalker and he did not need any reason to ever try to leave.
-tries to spoil Luke rotten; wants most everything Luke owns to be something he provided for him. He wants everything to make Luke think of him and as a reminder to others and Luke himself that this is all Din's. Din did this. Din provided for him. It was all Din and everyone needs to be aware of this.
-Luke has mostly free reign of the palace but cannot set foot outside without explicit permission from Din only and needs to be accompanied by someone. It seems over the top but he doesn't have much argument. This wasn't his homewold and things got a bit...messy and now he was potentially a target of enemies. But it still felt a bit overbearing.
-does have Luke followed and will try to be the one who follows him if possible. He normally can't, cause he's king and all that, but that doesn't stop him. He gifts Luke a cute little droid as a pet (Artoo hisses at it) that rides Luke's shoulder/head or floats next to him and gives Din all sorts of updates and live feed (he is a creep, but this is dark Din and we can go all out)
-has warned Luke that there are consequences to actions. he will be very lenient with Luke and most things but in regards to his safety, things are non-negotiable and he needs to listen and follow instructions (it takes time but eventually spanking is brought in)
Honestly, my brain is just bringing up delicious lead up to one of my favorite dark Din dinluke stories of Ni Ceta Ni Alor by @aureutr--cause can you imagine the slow breakdown of Din's sanity and his need to own, protect, and control Luke. The lead up to where we get to in that story.
Because I adore stories of Din already the victor, of him already losing his mind and heart to the darkness and succeeding where Anakin didn't--I love that SO much. But I also thrive on the build up, of how did he get his victory and how did he lose himself to the Darkness to the point Luke was swept up as well?
Ugh, love it so much

New Year’s Day
pairing: din djarin x reader
warnings: pure and absolute fluff, din taking his helmet off
words: 1k prompt: "I want your midnights, but I'll be cleaning up bottles with you on New Year's Day."
Tumblr media
“You’ve never celebrated the new year?” You asked as you sat down in the passenger chair of the Razor Crest, Din taking you both to your home planet for it’s celebration of the New Year. Din shook his helmet and glanced over his shoulder at you, knees pressed to your chest, a blanket over your lap, his child cuddled into your side.
“No,” He started, trying to hide the way your domestic state clouded his mind. Even though you were his girlfriend, you were his first ever girlfriend, and his biggest fear was scaring you off with his intense feelings for you. “What do you do for it?”
“Well, it snows on my planet. So we all wait up until it’s midnight, and every year without fail, our skies are showered with comets.” The picture you painted calmed his nerves over meeting your parents, your entire world sounding like a safe haven that he still wasn’t sure he’d be allowed into. “My family and I go out into the snow and watch them until they disappear. Sometimes it’s hard to know what’s falling snow and what’s a shooting star.”
“That sounds beautiful, mesh’la.” You smiled at the tenderness in his voice, proud that since you’d come into his life, it was the only tone he ever used. “What…your parents, do they—are they expecting—“
“A Mandalorian?” You filled in with a chuckle, watching as he turned in his chair to face you, his helmet dipping as he nodded. “They know that I’m in love. That’s all that will matter.”
“Will they understand me not…taking my helmet off?” He asked a new question, smiling as you let your legs stretch out and rest over his knees.
"My people are a very open-minded people. I don't think you have any reason to worry." He chuckled through his modulator and nodded, his gloved hands running up and down your legs before you moved them away and stood up, Grogu being rested on the seat with the blanket while you walked over to Din. You straddled his lap and reached for the beskar helmet, hesitating until you felt him nod in your hands, lifting it off and setting it on the dash. You took in his soft, nervous look with a frown, running your fingers over his stubbly jaw. "They're going to love you, just like I do. Please try not to overthink everything like I know you love to do."
"I'll try," He forced out his response with a tender smile, afraid to speak too loudly and ruin the softness of the moment. He reached up and cupped your cheek, pulling you in for a kiss, his forehead pressing to yours. "I...love you. I know I don't say it much, I'm still getting used to...caring about someone like this."
"You don't have to say it, Din. You show it everyday." You whispered, pecking his lips again before hearing the navigation system beep, alerting your arrival to your home planet. You grabbed his helmet and guided it back onto his head, tracing your finger along the edge and smiling at him. "Ready?"
"Ready."
***
It took all but three seconds for your family to fall in love with Din, just like you told him. Though he didn't take part in the feast or drinks, he actually managed to let loose for once. In fact, the first time you ever saw him do anything resembling dancing was with your mother, him shifting his feet from side to side awkwardly, you and Grogu watching with amused grins.
Grogu also seemed to be the star of the night, your parents calling him their grandchild the minute they laid eyes on him. You turned red with embarrassment at the comment, but Din loved it. If Grogu was their grandchild, that made you his mother--and that's exactly how he saw you.
"It's almost midnight," You approached Din as he looked outside, no snow falling yet. "No snow."
"Just wait," You urged, slipping your arm around his waist and hugging his side. "Do you know what else we do at midnight on New Years Eve?"
"What's that?" He turned to look down at you by his side, his helmet tipping towards you.
"We share a kiss with our lover." You grinned at him, reaching up to run your finger along the beskar. "But maybe we can make an exception and have our kiss a little later, in private."
"Look, it's snowing!" Your child brother pointed out the window and rushed outside, the clock now showing that it was midnight. Din turned his eyes to the window, his jaw dropping at the extraordinary sight while you pulled him outside to join your family.
As soon as the two of you walked outside, his armor became dusted with snow, your hands reaching up to his visor to wipe it away. Din watched as comets covered the night sky, everyone pulling their partners close and shared a kiss. His heart beat fast as he considered taking the ultimate plunge and lifting his helmet so that he could do the same with you. But first...he needed one more bit of assurance.
"Y/N," He began, turning your eyes from the shooting stars to his visor. "I'm afraid...that when I wake up tomorrow, this will have all been a dream."
"Din, I'm not a dream. I won't only be around to spend my New Years Eve's with you...I'll be there to pick up the mess on New Years Day, too. And the day after that, and after that, and--"
Din tugged his helmet off like it was a prison and let it fall onto the snowy ground, his hands holding your face tightly as he dipped down and kissed you with every ounce of love in his heart. Grogu interrupted the moment, tugging on your pants, making him pull away from you in a chuckle to grab him. You chuckled with teary eyes, petting his son and smiling up at your love.
"Happy New Year, Din." You stroked his jaw, watching as he cracked a smile and leaned in to peck you once more.
"Happy New Year, mesh'la."
