Sorry, parents: The American dream is only for DINKS
Homebuyers with kids will likely spend 66% of their income on a mortgage and childcare this year.
Parents in Los Angeles and San Diego can expect to spend as much as 121% and 113%, respectively.
Some Californians have moved across the country to afford to buy a home.
Thinking about buying a home this year with kids already in the picture? Get ready to dig deep.
A recent study from Zillow found that potential homebuyers with children are likely to spend 66% of their income on mortgage payments and childcare expenses — an increase of nearly 50% from 2019.
The real-estate company estimated city- and state-level childcare costs from 2009 to 2022 for the typical American family with 1.94 children by analyzing data from the Women’s Bureau of the US Department of Labor and advocacy group Child Care Aware.
According to Zillow’s analysis, in 31 of the largest 50 US metropolitan areas with available childcare cost data, families looking to buy a home can expect to spend more than 60% of their income on mortgage and childcare costs.
Some areas are even costlier, with parents in cities like Los Angeles and San Diego needing to dedicate as much as 121% and 113%, respectively. (In those areas, the cost of buying a typical home and childcare is so big relative to the median income that Zillow's calculation results in figures over 100%.)
Zillow determined that a family earning a median household income of $6,640 per month can expect to allocate $1,984 of that to childcare. If the family purchased a house at a 6.61% interest rate — the rate in early January, when the US Department of Labor released its latest data on childcare costs — and made a 10% down payment, their monthly mortgage would amount to $1,973.
That leaves just $2,683 for additional expenses like food, transportation, and healthcare. This means many households with kids are financially strained; they're likely spending more than 30% of their income on housing, well above what experts recommend.
It all adds up to a costly reality that's making the American dream of homeownership seem farther out of reach for parents than ever before.
Parents can blame a yearslong battle with inflation, as well as stubbornly high home prices and mortgage rates, for contributing to their predicament.
Based on the study, a new buyer household in the United States, making the median income, would spend 30% of it on housing. It's paying for childcare, then, that adds so much on top of the housing budget.
The upshot: Another group, less encumbered financially, appears better poised to realize the dream of homeownership: "DINKS," an acronym that stands for "dual income, no kids."
Some child-free DINKS — who boast a median net worth above $200,000 according to the Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finances — devote their disposable income to luxuries like boats and expensive cars.
Without the financial obligations of raising children, such as covering medical expenses or enrolling them in daycare or private school, DINKS can save thousands of dollars a year and build greater long-term wealth.
Some DINKS use their savings to finance vacations and travel the world, like Elizabeth Johnson and her husband, who, over the past couple of years, have hiked in the Swiss Alps, snorkeled in Hawaii, and enjoyed leaf peeping in Canada.
"We hang out with other people's kids every once in a while," Johnson previously told Business Insider's Bartie Scott and Juliana Kaplan, "but then we happily just give them back to their parents."
Some Americans with kids move to places where their money goes further
One solution to the high cost of both buying a home and raising a family?
Move.
In recent years, young Americans in higher-cost states have decided to move to places that offer them a cheaper cost of living.
Janelle Crossan moved to New Braunfels, Texas, from Costa Mesa, California, in 2020 following a divorce.
She was able to become a first-time homebuyer and found a safe community to raise her son.
"I paid $1,750 for rent in a crappy little apartment in California," Crossan told BI earlier this year. "Now, three years later, my whole payment, including mortgage and property taxes, is $1,800 a month for my three-bedroom house."
Pengyu Cheng, a program manager for a tech company, told BI in 2023 that moving from California to Texas allowed him and his wife to afford their first home, giving them the confidence and security to have their first child.
"Living in California has always been expensive," Cheng said. "I knew that when my wife and I eventually expanded our family, we wouldn't be able to afford San Francisco or the Bay Area in general — even though we both earn good salaries."

According to Deadline, Michael Waldron—who served as head writer for season 1 of the Disney Plus series Loki and wrote the script for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness—has been tapped to write Avengers 6: Secret Wars, which will premiere on November 8, 2025 and conclude Marvel’s Multiverse Saga. What does this new development mean for Secret Wars—and the rest of the Multiverse Saga? Here are some theories!
All about the Multiverse Saga
Tumblr media
Marvel’s Multiverse Saga comprises Phases 4, 5, and 6 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The multiverse itself was born in the season finale of Loki Season 1, in which Loki variant Sylvie (Sophia di Martino) kills He Who Remains, the leader of the Time Variance Authority, and allows the Sacred Timeline to branch into infinite parallel realities. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness explores the multiverse further by introducing the concept of multiversal travel and the universe-destroying collisions called incursions.
Even before Secret Wars was officially announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2022, fans suspected that it was in the works. In the original Secret Wars comics (both in 1984 and the 2015 remake), universes collide to form a patchwork planet called Battleworld, and with both the multiverse and incursions having been established in the MCU, it seemed like only a matter of time before Secret Wars made its big-screen debut.
Secret Wars will be preceded by Avengers 5: The Kang Dynasty, written by Jeff Loveness and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. Kang (Jonathan Majors) made his first appearance in Loki as He Who Remains, and he’ll appear again in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, coming out February 17, 2023.
Theory 1: Secret Wars will be weirder, and maybe even funnier, than Infinity War and Endgame
Tumblr media
Marvel movies vary a lot in tone, with some of them more serious than others, but Waldron’s mark on the MCU has been decidedly funnier than many other projects. From the Kafka-esque antics at the TVA to Multiverse of Madness’s campy tone (admittedly aided by director Sam Raimi), Waldron’s writing style is offbeat and often absurdist. The fact that Marvel has tapped him to write Secret Wars could mean that’s the style they’re seeking for the Multiverse Saga’s conclusion.
Infinity War and Endgame dealt with the genocide of half the universe, so the tone of those two films was suitably dark. One would think The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars would be even darker, with entire universes being obliterated, but it looks like Marvel may be looking to keep its sagas from getting too repetitive by giving Secret Wars a weirder—and maybe even funnier—tone than its previous team-up films. After all, Marvel has already hired comedic writing duo Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer to write the script for Fantastic Four.
That change in tone isn’t as weird a choice as it might seem on the surface. After all, the first Secret Wars story arc in the ’80s was a thinly-veiled gimmick to sell action figures. Here’s hoping Waldron can leverage the weirdness of the multiverse while keeping the high stakes that made Infinity War and Endgame so engrossing.
Theory 2: Loki, Doctor Strange, and Scott Lang will feature prominently in Secret Wars
Tumblr media
It’s no coincidence that Marvel has hired one of the writers most familiar with how the multiverse works—and the characters who are embroiled in it—to write the climax of its story.
Thanks to his time at the TVA, Loki knows the mechanics of how the multiverse works and what triggers the formation of a new reality. He also knows how Kang’s multiversal war is likely to play out, thanks to He Who Remains’s monologue in the season finale. The Loki season 2 trailer, which was shown to attendees at Disney’s 2022 D23 Expo, hints that Loki will be working to stop that war from occurring. Meanwhile, Doctor Strange has seen the multiverse for himself and learned about the danger of incursions. That puts Loki and Strange in prime positions to be the MCU’s resident multiverse experts, and giving Waldron the reins makes it very likely that they’ll serve that very purpose in Secret Wars.
And what about Scott Lang, who will have to fight one of Kang’s malevolent variants in Quantumania? Quantumania’s script was penned by Jeff Loveness, who’s also writing The Kang Dynasty, so we’re likely to see a throughline there, too. With The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars coming out only 6 months apart, their stories will most likely be tightly connected.
Theory 3: Waldron can make up for Wanda Maximoff’s rushed character arc in Multiverse of Madness
Tumblr media
This is admittedly a controversial take, but many fans were angry at Wanda Maximoff’s abrupt turn toward villainy in Multiverse of Madness, along with what looked like her death at the end of the movie. Even Elizabeth Olsen was surprised at the radical new direction for Wanda, which didn’t feel earned after her nuanced character development in WandaVision. If Wanda comes back in Secret Wars, then Waldron, who is certainly aware of how fans feel about what happened, has a chance to make things right—but we’ll have to wait until 2025 to find out.

So I Finally Watched Goncharov (1973) - WHAT NOW?
First off, congratulations on breaking out the Laserdisc player. Or low-quality MP4 rip or whatever. I hope you enjoyed what is arguably one of the best (and low-key queerest) mafia thrillers of all time.
BUT RIGHT, what do you watch now that you’ve whetted your whistle for weird semi-gay mob violence? Well, here’s a list of eight recommendations (why 8? I couldn’t think of ten that were quite good enough, that’s why) to get you going.
8. AKAGI, 2015.
Underground gambling, incredible intensity, betting your own blood on mahjong... this one’s heavy on the gambling terminology, and can be a little hard to follow if you don’t know about the game, but it’s worth it.
7. UN ASONTO DE PLATA Y PLOMO, 1988
“An Affair of Silver and Lead” is one of the best proto-narcocorridas out there. A borderline rock opera (with a gloriously copyright-infringing soundtrack), Un Asonto took a look at Scarface and said “yeah, but what if we play how awesome being a gangster is straight?” Compared to Goncharov it’s devoid of nuance, but the cinematography and violence is beautiful, and the characters are brilliant. If you aren’t cheering after watching Fuego Caliente gets his ass handed to him by Diego De La Montoya, check your pulse.
6. WELCOME TO WABASH, 1992
Despite the small town Indiana setting, this gets very dark, very intense, and very weird very quickly. Interesting for many reasons, not the least of which is because it blew a hole in the “war on drugs” rhetoric of the era (one of many reasons it didn’t get a wide release). Wet Charlie’s story is a hell of a tearjerker, and the background “we can’t call it a romance but it’s totally a romance” between Jen and Big Linda is a remarkably heartwarming thread in a movie that ends with 80% of the cast dead.
(Jen and Big Linda survive. That’s not a spoiler, you find that out in the first scene, thank you nonlinear storytelling.)
5. BURIED IN MUD, BURIED IN BLOOD, 1960
If Goncharov had more beatniks... it wouldn’t be this, but it’d be kinda close. A knee-jerk gritty backhand-response to the stylish heist movies of the era, BIMBIB is a tale of desperate thieves trying to unload a stolen Renaissance painting before they get fingered - or worse, before the bill for everything they used to steal the painting comes due. Spoiler: SHIT GOES BAD QUICKLY. Might have been partial inspiration for Guy Ritchie’s later work. Fair warning: If you’re allergic to bongos, watch it with the subtitles on and sound off. And no, the title makes no sense, but the studio insisted on using it.
4. SHOOT THE SHAGGY DOG, 2002
A bargain-bin treasure, STSD was a direct to video release that should have at least gotten an arthouse release. Half the actors are wooden and overly stoic, the sets are obviously sub-zero-budget, the cinematography is a joke, but the plot will keep you on the edge of your seat, and the few good actors - notably Chaim Wallace’s turn as Frankie - have enough gravitas to pull the rest along. “Gang wars are always brutal, kid. When the other gang’s the police, that doesn’t change anything.” Goosebumps, every time.
3. THE GODFATHER, PART 2, 1974
I mean, if you’re gonna watch Goncharov, you might as well, right?
2. ÖFEKLI KAPLAN VE SONSUZ GüN, 1989
It’s TURKISH GONCHAROV! I’m not actually kidding. “The Furious Tiger and the Endless Day” started out as a remake of Goncharov, before the director took it hard in another direction. Hence why the Goncharov expy, Avci, dies halfway through the movie, and the equivalent of our favorite ice-pick wielding “little guy”, Demirci, is the one to tie up the loose ends with his own flavor of brutality. If you’re of a certain age, you might have seen part of it already - it got shared on Kazaa and Limewire a lot, usually with filenames that suggested it was porn. Not GOOD, but surreal as hell, especially if you’ve just watched the actual Goncharov.
1. FACE EATERS FROM DIMENSION X, 1990
Don’t let the B-movie title dissuade you. Once you get past the Troma-typical gorn and sex, you’re left with a remarkably tight crime story about warring families, the inevitable breakdown of diplomacy, and a stinging rebuke of the concept of the Nash Equilibrium. Also the titular Face Eaters are freaky as hell and I want one as a plush toy.

UCONN MATT WOOD SELECTED IN NHL DRAFT
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - On the first day of the NHL draft, the Nashville Predators selected UConn's Matt Wood at number 15. Wood slipped down a bit further than he was expected to be selected partly because Anaheim, picking at number two, and the Arizona Coyotes at number six, made surprise choices that gave some other teams an opening to select differently than they had wanted or planned to. Speaking to ESPN's Emily Kaplan right afterward, Wood was very complimentary of his UCONN coaches led by Mike Cavanaugh. "(I was) really happy to be there and play for my coaches and they helped me to get ready for this." Wood was the fifth UCONN player since joining Hockey East to be drafted. He wore #71 for his idol Evgeni Malkin. In speaking to Kaplan, incoming Nashville GM Barry Trotz, who's replacing the retiring David Poile, was succinct in his initial evaluation, "Short term, we'll let him develop (back at UCONN). We look at the profile; he's a big body that can score. He's got a long way to go. If you wanna go far in the playoffs, you gotta score. We hope he'll exhibit (his scoring) and he checks all the boxes." Nashville has two former Huskies under their umbrella, Czechs Jachym Kondelik, the Huskies all time-assist leader, and goalie Tomas Vomacka, who they both drafted and played in the minors with the Milwaukee Admirals (AHL) and the Florida Everblades (ECHL), respectively. Wood played very solidly as a 17-year-old freshman. He led the Huskies in scoring with 34 points in 35 games. Wood was superb in the IIHF U-18 bronze medal game for Canada with the game-tying goal in the last minute with the goalie pulled and made a beautiful feathered short pass to Macklin Celebrini for the game-winner in OT 4-3 win over Slovakia. Wood had a three-point performance, garnering a plus-12 and 13 points in just seven games in the tournament. He will return to Storrs next season, be among the top players in Hockey East, and is WJC eligible for Canada. He turned down an offer from the WHL Regina Pats, who drafted him and ex-Pack championship head coach, the current Regina head coach and VP of Hockey Operations John Paddock, to play there and with the first overall selection, Connor Bedard. Instead, Wood chose to come to UCONN and chart his course. At 6'4, he surpassed Tage Thompson as the highest-drafted Husky ever. A total of 10 Huskies have been drafted in the short Hockey East history of the program. RANGERS SELECTIONS The Rangers drafted 23rd overall and selected were able to have a strong player fall to them in Gabriel (Gabe) Perreault. He has lots of offensive upside potential and is heading to Boston College (HE) with linemates Will Smith (San Jose) and Ryan Leonard (Washington). They were together on the USNDTP (USHL) last fall. All three will face Wood at the XL Center when BC comes to play UConn at the XL Center in a marquee matchup. Perreault broke the team record for scoring held by Auston Matthews with 159 points. "It's cool because he's one of the guys I look up to and one of those guys to look up above you," said Perreault to ESPN. Hockey is a big part of the Perreault family. His sister Liliane just completed her collegiate career at Mercyhurst (Erie, PA) (AHA), and his brother Jacon plays with San Diego. His father, Yanic Perreault, is the skills development coach in Chicago and, for eight consecutive seasons, held the NHL's best faceoff percentage at an average of 62.89%. He played 859 games with three tours in Toronto, LA, Nashville, and his hometown Montreal. NOTES: UCONN got another commit for next season in New Hampshire native LW Ben Muthersbaugh, who played for the NJ Titans (NAHL) last year after spending time previously at Tilton School (NHPREP). Ex-Sound Tiger Paul Flache takes a second stab as an assistant coach with the Flint Firebirds (OHL) after being with Atlanta (USPHL Premier) for the last three years. Joining him is a former Ranger from the early-to-mid 1980s and two-time Stanley Cup winner in Edmonton making his North American return is Reijo Ruotsalainen. The 63-year-old Ruotsalainen had been coaching in Europe, though not over the last three years. His previous coaching assignment was with, Kiekko-Vantaa (Finland-Mestis) as an assistant coach. While he had a successful NHL career of 443 games and 344 points and was voted the best defenseman in the 1980 WJC (his third) tourney, had he been playing hockey today, he would rival Erik Carlsson of the San Jose Sharks in the skill game from the blueline in this more free-wheeling era of hockey. After leaving the NHL, he played in three World Championships, one Olympic tournament for Finland, and another 402 games in Europe (Switzerland, Sweden, and Finland). He hasn't been to North America since 2001 as an assistant coach with the long-defunct New Orleans Brass (ECHL), featured one-time Rangers head coach Ted Sator at the helm, and had former New Haven Senator Jeff Lazaro as a player. Ross Colton (Taft Prep), who scored the game-winning Cup-clinching goal three years ago for the Tampa Bay Lightning, was traded to the Colorado Avalanche. Connor Doherty (Sacred Heart University) re-signs with the Maine Mariners (ECHL). After four years in Denmark and nine in Europe, Mike Little of Enfield, the SonderyskE team captain last season, has left the team. Is this the end of the road for the 35-year-old, or is he likely to play a few more years in a new destination? Derek Barach (Salisbury School) heads from Ässät Pori (Finland-FEL) and takes the risky proposition and signs with Vityaz Moscow (Russia-KHL) to continue his European-only career. The newest college hockey program was announced at the Bridgestone Arena in Tennessee, the site of the NHL Draft. It will be the first at a historically black college and university (HBCU). The club will be Tennessee State and play at the ACHA club hockey division level. The coaching staff is yet to be determined. The project was an all-in process as the NHL, NHLPLA, and College Hockey Inc. were all involved. The program will start in the 2024-25 season with a look toward going varsity Division-1 level down the road, and it will be the first hockey at an HCBU, hopefully leading to more significant participation of Blacks, Latinos, and other ethnic groups in the sport of hockey in the US and around the world. The college hockey season is over by nearly three months activity continues as Quinnipiac University stands at the mountaintop. UCONN HOCKEY HOME Read the full article

Broadway in Victoria's COME FROM AWAY adds 4 more shows
Broadway in Victoria is bringing COME FROM AWAY to Victoria’s Royal Theatre this May. The productions original 16 show run May 10 - 21, has set ticket sale records for live entertainment in Victoria and is now sold out. As a result of this huge public demand the New York Producers of COME FROM AWAY have agreed to add 4 more shows to the Royal Theatre run.

The North American Tour of Come From Away Photo: Matthew Murphy The added 4 shows will be presented on: Wednesday, May 17th at 2pm; Tuesday, May 23rd at 2pm; Tuesday, May 23rd at 7pm and Wednesday, May 24th at 2pm. Tickets for the 4 added COME FROM AWAY shows go on sale, today, Friday, March 10, 2023 at noon. Tickets will be available online at RMTS.BC.CA or in-person from the box office at the Royal Theatre, 805 Broughton Street, Victoria or McPherson Theatre, 3 Centennial Square, Victoria, also by phone at 250-386-6121.  Further extensions for this Broadway in Victoria limited run production will not be possible so this is the last chance for this tour stop.  Many of us on the West Coast recall what happened September 11, 2001 when Vancouver Airport welcomed dozens of flights and thousands of diverted passengers, but what happened on the East Coast? COME FROM AWAY tells the remarkable true story of 7,000 stranded passengers and the small town of just 10,000, Gander, Newfoundland that welcomed the ‘come from aways’. Cultures clashed and nerves ran high, but uneasiness turned into trust, music soared into the night, and gratitude grew into enduring friendships. On September 11, 2001 the world stopped. On September 12, their stories moved us all. Since its San Diego out-of-town tryouts in 2015 to its 2017 full production Broadway debut, COME FROM AWAY has been winning awards all around the world.  Accolades include the Tony Award for “Best Direction of a Musical” (Christopher Ashley), 4 Olivier Awards (London) including “Best New Musical,” 5 Outer Critics Circle Awards (NYC) including “Outstanding New Broadway Musical,” 3 Drama Desk Awards (NYC) including “Outstanding Musical,” 4 Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Awards (North American Tour) including “Best Production,” 4 Helen Hayes Awards (D.C.) including “Outstanding Production of a Musical,” 4 Gypsy Rose Lee Awards (Seattle) including “Excellence in Production of a Musical,” 6 San Diego Critics Circle Awards including “Outstanding New Musical,” 3 Toronto Theatre Critics Awards including “Best New Musical,” 3 Dora Awards (Toronto) including “Outstanding New Musical/Opera” and “Outstanding Production,” and the 2017 Jon Kaplan Audience Choice Award (Toronto). Don’t miss your chance to see this Canadian musical, based on a remarkable true story when COME FROM AWAY plays Victoria’s Royal Theatre May 10 - 24, 2023. Tickets online at RMTS.BC.CA or in-person at theatre box office or by phone.
