Notes from Blue Box Press' IG Live w/Jennifer L Armentrout (ASOAAB- 7/20/2023)

These are a culmination of the big notes I made while watching the IG live (which should be on Blue Box Press' IG if you want to watch yourself). This is for my reference going forward, but I thought y'all might enjoy it too.

-Always had planned to do a Casteel POV of From Blood and Ash

-Realized a Cas POV would've been a lot of standing around, guard duty, and bickering w/Vikter so she switched things up.

-Wanted ASOAAB to move the plot forward a bit more than your standard retelling would.

-JLA Always knew that Poppy would go into stasis at some point. We'll learn more about stasis in A Fire in the Flesh in October.

-Tried to put as much new material in ASOAAB as possible. Was difficult to fit more new material in when working within the tight timeline already present in FBAA.

-From the mouth of JLA: If you haven't read TWOTQ, somethings in ASOAAB won't make sense. If you haven't read ASOAAB, some things in the next installment won't make sense.

-The labeling/naming of the chapters was very intentional. "If Cas had to summarize that part of his life..."

-Some of JLA's favorite parts of ASOAAB: The Duke scene, the scene after they arrived at New Haven, and the opening line to the chapter 'Necessary Supplies'.

-Hardest scenes to write were formulating the justifications for Cas' actions onto paper even though she already knew them.

-As for knowing when a book ends "You just know." The story tells you. You might go in with one ending, but the story has a different plan.

-Next book is last with Poppy and Cas as narrators (mentioned briefly that they might not be the ONLY narrators in the next book). There is one more book planned after Poppy and Cas' next book that sounds like a continuation of the plot. It just won't have Poppy and Cas at the helm.

-Male POV's are easier for her to write than female.

-Sera acts first and dwells on her actions and such later whereas Poppy thinks over every little thing first before acting.

-Ash has unhinged moments but is more stable/smooth than Cas. Not a lot of knee jerk reactions from Ash.

-ASOAAB took 3 months to write.

-Readers favorite scenes tend to be the more filler scenes. "Emil's life gets threatened a lot in those scenes." These are used to flesh out secondary characters and provide humor.

-Why honeydew? It was a personal joke she inserted because a lot of older historical romance novels will describe "down there" as 'smelling like peaches'. She thought that was funny and tossed honeydew in and it stuck.

-Delano as a marshmallow started in JLAnders like Casserole and Daddy Nyktos.

-"Why do you like torturing us?" "Because it's fun?"

-Doesn't ever set out to make people cry. Wants people when they get to the last book of a series to feel like they're 'in a good place'. She will always end with a HEA. It's just that the journey to get there will hurt.

-She considers her bonus scenes she writes outside of the books 'partly out of canon'. This applies to Cupcakes & Kisses bonus scene.

-When writing about trauma and mental health, she tries to keep the characters' responses as realistic as possible. Doesn't like characters who always respond perfectly to everything because 'that's just not real!'

-Information for the Visions compendium: A lot of information comparable to an editor's bible. Told in Miss Willa's style. Visions will have diary entries from Miss Willa, information about bloodlines, gods, dieties, wolven, etc., original artwork (characters, crowns, craven, draken, thrones, etc.), bonus scenes (one with Poppy & Tawny among others), JLA interviewing Kieran ("He was a fucking asshole!" "was just not having it!".

-"Who do you plan on killing next?" "Everyone."

-Will there be a B&A/F&F crossover? "Yeah?!" (Sera is awake and when she woke, she also woke all of the other gods and "other things". Upon waking, Sera was immediately "someone's gonna get their ass whooped" and Ash gets her to back off.

-AFITF originally had a different name.

-Went right from writing ASOAAB into writing AFITF.

-"You would've thought Cas descended from Sera." [with how they act sometimes] "Vastly different characters that are sometimes similar in the things they do."

-Cas is many, many, many generations down from Attes. "Not like he's his grandad."

-JLA has a heavy hand in the covers, what she wants to see in them. She made a point of wanting poppies to be featured on ASOAAB's cover because they haven't been featured yet. Originally wanted the Atlantian crest, but that wouldn't have worked with the story. Instead the bloodstone sword and sun were chosen.

-"Pay very close attention to the maps in coming books."

-Kieran doesn't have a middle name. Most don't. It's certain elemental Atlantian's at this point who do.

this is my opinion, you can agree or not and that’s fine but this is what I think.

I think this is an unpopular opinion but I kinda hope is not. Am I the only one who wants poppy to stop using the wolven dagger?

and before someone comes for me: read.

First, Why do I think what I think?

why I don’t think Poppy should keep the dagger:

One thing was to know that the dagger was built by the bones of a wolven that died during the war, and other complete different thing is to know that those are the bones of Preela, not a nameless wolven, and that she was abused and tortured in front of her best friend before she finally died. Preela was not only Delano's sister but also Malik's best friend, who according to Casteel “Preela was his bonded wolven, and they had been as close as Kieran and I were, which was why he had forbidden her from accompanying him when he left to look for me.”. Preela was Malik's Kieran and Poppy is carrying her bones around…it’s weird. Poppy carrying around Preela's bones is the exact same thing as if Malik would be carrying Tawny's bones or Vikter's bones, or if Millie would be carrying Kieran's bones. The dagger is not built by some wolven's bones, it was made from the bones of the sister of Poppy's friend and the best friend of her brother-in-law. Poppy should give the dagger to Delano or Malik or even both of them and let THEM decide what to do with it or if she can keep it. It’s not Poppy's right to have that dagger anymore.

and in case anyone forgot how Preela died:

“She died.” That muscle below his temple ticked even faster. “But not before she made it all the way to Carsodonia. I don’t know how she managed it, but Preela made it all the way here, just to be captured.” He leaned in. “The beast who’s currently missing a head thanks to your wife killed her. Not quickly. and Poppy carries one of those daggers with her all the time and still does even now that Malik and Delano are there. I can’t be the only one who does not think this is right….

Second, “but”

“but is a symbol of poppy/FBAA”

I understand that the wolven dagger is like a “symbol” of from blood and ash/Poppy. It is in many fanarts, book covers, some incredible decorations about the book, etc. I love it as a symbol and I think that it can still be one but Poppy does not have to carry it anymore to still be a symbol. There are many symbols of FBAA that are not constantly mention or even shown anymore but they still a symbol. For example the Atlantian creaste, willa's diary, casteel two short swords, the weeping willow, honeydew, the red pearl, the veil or the atlantian crowns (I will back to this later tho) and there are even more. The wolven dagger can still be a main symbol of FBAA and not be Poppy's main weapon.

“but is all Poppy has from Vikter”

I get it, I do get that the dagger is special because is from Vikter. However, Poppy does not need it to remember Vikter, specially if Vikter is going to make an appearance in the next book as many theories say. Poppy will always have Vikter with her because he was and is part of her and her life, he trained her and loved her; she does not need the dagger to have Vikter close to her.

Third, The Atlantian crowns

This same goes to the gilded bones crowns. There is a theory that says that the Crowns are actually Nyktos's parents bones. If this was the case, then I believe that the crowns should not be used anymore or at least let be up to Nyktos what to do with his murdered parents's bones.

The War of Two Queens.

This post will have a lot of spoilers.

I read some comments about how people didn’t like this book so much, for many reasons, and, although I respect that, I disagree about some things.

I agree that this book was slow. That the surprise factor was kind of a let down! But if you think about the fact that this series will have 6 books, you realize that this book was more of a bridge and an opportunity to clarify some stuff. Of course it needed some drama and tension, so all the Casteel being taken and shit, that you could clearly see it wasn’t very well planned at all, but ok. I think this book was more like a filler than anything else. I liked it, though. 🤷🏻‍♀️

But ok, let me say some stuff.

1st, and I think most important: Casteel rescue. After the way Isbeth took him, all the shit at the end of last book and the finger delivery, I was expecting a super elaborated plot around his rescue and it ended up being pretty weak! On one hand, I kind of felt relieved because there wasn’t so much stalling around getting to him, and you gotta love a simple succession of events, but I thought it could have gone better, more thrill, or something. Either way, THANK GOD HE WAS MARGINALLY OK. And thank God he’s home again ❤️ Poppy and his reunion was pretty steamy and I love them!

2nd: Malik: Thank God this shithead helped Casteel, I think we all had a feeling he wasn’t bad or anything, and just another victim in all this chaos, but I was glad to be sure and I loved that he left Carsodonia and reunited with everyone! His reunion with Delano and Valyn? Oh, so bittersweet! I need more of him at home, remaking bonds and everything. I really didn’t like the part about him being the one who tried to kill Poppy as a child. It was really bad of him, but I understood his logic, like Poppy did. I didn’t like because for me it seemed a little forced, as if just made to be another - unnecessary - obstacle between Malik and Casteel. But, oh well, he didn’t kill her and Casteel already bit the shit out of him, so let’s move on from that.

3rd: Millicent: That was a curvy ball, and I liked that development. I like her and Malik, I think it has potential for a great storyline here. I’m still a little unsure if I LIKE the person she is, though. She seems not to be a crazy person like the mother, and tried to stop all that shitshow, and Malik appears to like her and believe her to be a good person, but we didn’t get enough of her for me to specifically like her. I bet I will like her if she doesn’t die or something, but not yet. I love the idea of Poppy having a sister, though.

4th, the Prophecy: WTF? I swear I didn’t understand that whole nonsense at all. It didn’t make sense, I’m still lost about that mess and it took such a central part of the book that I really just got annoyed that it really didn’t mean much at the end.

5th, Isbeth: Oh, her death was violent, horrific, brutal and so bloody and I’m here for all of it. Such a piece of garbage that woman. Everything that Seraphena said at that moment was so powerful and real. I was so thrilled about that crazy scene.

6th, that final crazy scene: I was losing my freaking shit. Like, everybody was dying, shit was going tits up and I was so tense and scared. That fucking scene scared the bejesus out of me, welp. When Delano died I was ready to give that book up, I swear. I love that wolf so much! But then everybody errr, resurrected? And I was so freaking thankful that I could get past that very biblical moment.

7th, the Gods shitshow: not much to say here, I really got so confused about Gods and Primals, and primal essence, and amber and one stealing the essence of the other and everybody sleeping like nothing was happening, that honestly I need the next book to help me understand all that mess.

8th, the infamous Joining: I have a lot to unpack here.

I read so much how people hated how Poppy and Kieran’s feelings grew for each other during this book, how they thought it was kind of emotional cheating on Casteel, and how they hated that Kieran kind of got in between the couple. I mean, I don’t necessary loved the growing feelings between them when Cas was away, I was really scared of what that would mean when Casteel got back, but then it got so clear for me that, although Poppy loves Kieran very much, her love for Casteel is the romantic one. I didn’t mind the Joining at all because I really felt at that moment that the bond the three of them share is so real and full of love, but not at all what Casteel and Poppy have. Those bonds are different, one not more important then the other, but different and I understand and respect. What made me really more at ease with this is seeing the love Cas and Kieran have for each other, how Cas wanted the Joining, that it wasn’t him doing it just because Poppy wanted or something like that, and that Kieran wanted to be bonded not just because of his feelings for Poppy, but because he has such strong and sincere feelings about Cas either. So, how can Kieran be between the couple if Cas and Kieran also have a bond that is just so special and strong, and uniquely theirs, too? It felt sincere for me, for them to be bonded, and not romantically so. The sex might’ve made things felt romantic, but honestly, I really believe that they just used the opportunity of the ceremony that kind of makes people horny to enjoy some naughty time hehe! I specially love how sexy Cas is about exploring sex with Poppy, and how into it he was about the joining. I get that sometimes kind of feels like everything is about Poppy. Like, she’s the most powerful, the wolven are now bonded to her, she’s a God, the chosen, the prophecy and so on, that annoys me a little that everything is about her when I would really love for it be just as much about Cas too, because I love him just as much, but the joining I really felt it was about the tree of them and very fair. It made sense either, for me, why they did it! It really settle me too, that after the joining, Cas, Poppy and Kieran were exact the same. And I particularly love that scene when Kieran joined Poppy and Cas on their tent to sleep with them and she remarks how the both of them, Poppy and Kieran, are drawn to Cas very strongly ❤️

9th, Reaver: AND THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT ONE because is a wish of my heart, ok? But I WOULD LOVE SO FUCKING MUCH if Kieran and Reaver became a couple! All that snark between them scream of sexual tension to me, and honestly, it would be SO HOT and funny the both of them together.

So, that is that, I think I talked about everything of note. I hope the next book is more complete in the sense of well constructed plans and such things, and that nobody important gets separated of their loved ones. And that nobody ever touches Delano again u.u

Ok, so. This one wasn’t the best book of the series, but between 6, some were bound to be weaker. Nonetheless, I’m already waiting for The Heart of Bone and Ash, hopefully next year?!

Nobody ever talks about Delano and Poppy’s relationship.. Not only is he funny but he’s always there and concerned for her. He was the first to hear her when she was locked in the room and he busted in thinking she was yelling, he was the first one to speak through the notam waking her out of her nightmare, he was the first one to ask her to dance at the wedding ceremony they came across, and more. He always seems to be there, wolven form or not looking out for her as a friend.
