New Age Manifestation Methods: How Magick is Seeping into Popular Culture and How to Utilize it to Manifest Your Dream Life
Every magickal practitioner who has even the least bit of exposure to popular culture has heard of it; New Age manifestation methods are all the rage. Not only are they nearly ubiquitous now, this niche of magick is also selling like crazy. Ask the Law of Attraction gurus that make millions from what they teach; think Bob Proctor, Deepak Chopra, and Tony Robbins. And I call this a niche in magick because it has the condition of a true magickal art: that of achieving power through changing reality. Throughout this blog post, if you can spot them, I will give you practical tips on how to enhance your magick to achieve your dream life and attract abundance and prosperity using this trend of magick!
Before we dive deep, let’s clarify what New Age stuff actually is. According to an article in pewresearch.org entitled “‘New Age’ Beliefs Common Among Both Religious and Nonreligious Americans“, New Age beliefs often constitute a belief in:
-Spiritual energy that is present in everything in the universe
-Psychics
-Astrology
-Reincarnation
In the article, it states that roughly six-in-ten Americans accept at least one of these New Age beliefs regardless of their religious affiliation or lack thereof.
Although these beliefs are inherent in religions such as Buddhism, Hinduism, and Wicca, even self-professed Christians(the largest religious demographic in the U.S.) are reported to hold some of these New Age beliefs. This includes roughly 62% of Christians, 47% of Evangelicals, and 70% of Catholics.
Among the religiously unaffiliated, 56% of Agnostics, 78% described as ‘nothing in particular,’ and 22% of atheists hold New Age beliefs. The rise of acceptance among these groups can be attributed to the scientific research that has been published of the validity of its concepts such as energy and ESP(extrasensory perception) phenomena. Scientific proponents of such phenomena include psychologist Daryl Bem, Dr. William Bengston PhD, Konstantin Buteyko, and Vlail Kaznacheev. According to an article on The Guardian titled, “CIA file on Russian ESP experiments released – but you knew that, didn’t you?”, the last two scientists above were Russian scientists who conducted experiments that tested ESP, which is described in the article as “the ability to gain information, or influence physical objects, using only the mind.” Their findings, previously classified, were declassified by the CIA in 1991 after John Greenewald filed an appeal to release the records. Some of the ESP documents remained secret, as the CIA and the Air Force refused to declassify them(https://www.theblackvault.com/documentarchive/extra-sensory-perception-esp/). The results of their experiments found that psychic energy can be concentrated and transmitted, and that images can be relayed to another person’s mind.
How is this relevant in magick? When we cast a spell or perform a ritual, we concentrate energy into our magickal objects. If the objects naturally vibrate with an energy that we are trying to use(think: lemons for solar energy, roses for Venusian energy, etc.), it only adds to the power of our spell. At the end of the spell, we make a final movement that releases this energy to the universe or to our target. ESP is something we as magicians have been practicing since the beginning of time.
ESP is one of the core explanations for the validity of New Age science, as well as the ideas of quantum mechanics and string theory; both of which support the concept of a fluid, malleable universe that can be altered with consciousness.
But science is not the only field that progressively accepts the core tenets of the New Age. In the celebrity world, bigshots are revealing that the law of attraction has helped them create the amazing life they live now. Among these celebrities are Oprah Winfrey, Jay-Z, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jim Carrey, Lady Gaga, Conor McGregor, Will Smith, Steve Harvey, LMFAO, Kerri Walsh & Misty May-Treanor, and Denzel Washington. If you want to read what they said about the law of attraction, go here.
New Age thought is also seeping into the songs of popular singers. Some examples are Lil Baby’s “Dreams 2 Reality”, The Script’s “Hall of Fame”, Black Eyed Peas’ “I Got a Feeling”, Imagine Dragons’ “On Top of the World”, and Travie McCoy’s “Billionaire”. One of my personal favorites is Ariana Grande’s “Just Like Magic,” and “Successful.” These songs make you want to imagine your dream life while you’re vibing . . . and two of the steps to the manifestation process is visualization and emotion(emotion is created when you’re moved by the song, aka ‘vibing’).
Now that we’ve covered how this New Age movement has influenced mainstream thought, let’s talk about the popular manifestation methods that it espouses.
-Affirmations
-Scripting
-Visualization
-Vision Boards
-Subliminal Messages
I omitted the law of attraction from this list, because we are talking about manifestation methods here, which are tools. The law of attraction is more of a viewpoint rather than a tool; like magickal theory rather than the procedures for a spell. However, many theories can converge on the same tool, and the tool works just the same regardless of the different theories of how it works.
In addition, a New Age law called the law of assumption is quickly replacing the law of attraction; it states that to manifest your ideal life, you assume yourself to be already living that type of life. The hole in the law of attraction is its theory that if you want something so much, the universe will conspire to bring it to you. The problem with that is the lack of detachment creates a blockage from it happening. After casting a spell, we are told to “set it and forget it.” There is a reason for that message; it’s because when we obsess over the results, the intention we wanted to send out through the spell is “bound” by our obsession. Instead of being sent out to the universe, it spirals around our energetic field like a person trapped in a roller coaster. This is why the law of assumption is more valid than the law of attraction. It assumes you already are what you want to be, so you naturally detach from the outcome.
In a sense, you will see how the following methods adhere to the law of assumption.
Affirmations
Affirmations are writing down new beliefs and repeating them to yourself over and over. You recite these to yourself in the morning, at night, while driving, or doing your daily tasks. You can also write them on sticky notes or on your bathroom wall so you see them frequently. With time, these new beliefs replace your old beliefs as you drill them into your subconscious.
Repetition is the key here. Any thought, emotion, or action becomes a habit if you persistently repeat it everyday for a few months.
If you come across a point where your conscious mind argues with the affirmations, realize that it is just your old beliefs rising up to protect its position in your subconscious. In that moment, stay true to your affirmations and don’t give up; feel the resistance and eventually it will fade as your affirmations replace the old beliefs.
2. Scripting
Scripting involves writing down in detail how you would experience having what you want. An example would be describing a day in your ideal life incorporating the five senses: see, smell, taste, hear, touch.
“Outside the window wall of my penthouse, I can see the ocean in the distance and I imagine the sound of the waves from far away. I have a hot chocolate with a smell brimming of nostalgia and the delightful taste of vanilla pinched in, and I spend the morning reading a good book on my luxurious couch with my cat on my lap.”
“I enter into the building of my company, and all my colleagues greeted me enthusiastically, ready to start another eventful day as I, the CEO, present the plans for an expansion of our company to Dubai.”
“The smell of a first class airplane ride smells delightfully elegant, and as I sit on my seat I can feel the high-quality leather as I relaxed into it. The flight attendant puts desert on the table before me and I savor the taste of chocolate and mocha. The lounge looks absolutely stunning., and the view outside the plane is breathtaking.”
You don’t have to be as wordy as the three examples above. You can use scripting to manifest something simple, like a laptop:
“My new laptop feels smooth, and its color is pink and shiny. I turn it on, and the sound came on. It smells fresh from the box and brand new.”
Your style of scripting is up to you, but it has to conjure up a clear image as you write and reread it. It needs to feel like a memory playing out in your mind.
3. Visualization
Visualization is when you form an experience of your desire in your mind. It is basically like scripting, although you don’t need to write it down. However, you need to be really immersed in the visualization and feel all the feelings as if you were actually experiencing it at that moment.
4. Vision Boards
A vision board is like a collage you put together with pictures of things you want to manifest. How you make your vision board is up to you; some people cut pictures from magazines, others create their boards digitally.
When the vision board is done, you put it in a place where you will see it often like on the wall of your room or by the kitchen table. The more you see it within the periphery of your vision, the more it embeds into your subconscious.
5. Subliminal messages
Subliminal messages are affirmations or images that are positioned in a way that you don’t take notice of them consciously. The messages reach your subconscious more easily because they bypass the conscious mind, which is the main defense mechanism of your old beliefs. Thus, choosing your subliminal messages help you rewrite old beliefs pretty quickly and replace them with the new beliefs you desire.
There are an abundance of material on subliminals on the internet. Some popular ones are subliminal videos on Youtube. You choose a topic(like becoming fit or gaining wealth), search for it on Youtube, and you will have a large amount of free subliminals to choose from. Some have music in them, some have rain sounds, and some add frequencies to the subliminal. The common thing about subliminal messages is that they have to be fast enough or quiet enough to remain undetected by the conscious mind.
The awesome part about these New Age manifestation methods is that they don’t require as much time, effort, or money to do. Whereas some folk spells require ingredients that are costly or not readily accessible, and that rituals involving circles and the Triangle of the Art can be time-consuming, these methods merely require a pen, paper, and your imagination. If you don’t have the time or money for magickal ritual, these methods of manifestation can be a good medium of magick.
Now that we near the end of my blog post, I hope you spotted the tips for using New Age thought to your benefit, other than the methods that I outlined.
One of them is the paragraph where I talked about ESP and the findings it revealed in the Russian scientists’ experiments. They found that energy can be concentrated and transmitted; this is something you must do in your spells. Rather than just doing the procedures, focus all your energy into the intention and then release it in the direction of your desire.
The other hidden nugget of wisdom is in the law of assumption. It states that you attract or manifest what you assume yourself to already have or be. Do this in your magick; cast every spell as if it is already complete. Visualize its fulfillment as you make the motions.
That said, if you’re an occultist that values traditional magick and shuns science, do not dismiss the New Age movement for its novelty, connection to science, and its mainstream influence. It is a valid current to learn from because it has its own results. And as magicians, we value results. Just because we are magicians doesn’t mean we have to go against every grain. There is a piece of wisdom that can be extracted from every path, so don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater.
The New Age movement, although it strays a bit from traditional magickal teachings, nevertheless has value in it. As a modern magician we are eclectic in our practice, taking what we learn from other paths and systems and using it for the development of our own practice. The New Age movement is rather youthful, not in its novelty, but in its optimism. It is not concerned with dogma; its main purpose is to help people live the most abundant, happy life that they can imagine. Perhaps this is why so many people from all backgrounds are attracted to the movement.

Deepak Chopra and his 30 best quotes
Tumblr media
The holistic health guru, author, and speaker Deepak Chopra is an Indian-American. He is one of the most well-known personalities in the New Age and self-help industries. He is the author of more than 80 books covering a wide range of subjects, such as awareness, mind-body wellness, and spirituality.
About Deepak Chopra
Chopra studied medicine at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences after being born in New Delhi, India, in 1946. After relocating to the US in the 1970s, he started working as a licensed doctor. In due course, he developed an interest in complementary and alternative medicine and started incorporating Eastern techniques such as yoga and meditation into his work.
Tumblr media
Chopra's teachings are predicated on the notion that our ideas and beliefs have a direct impact on our physical health and well-being and that the mind and body are inherently interconnected. Although millions of people worldwide have found his message to be compelling, his method is sometimes criticized for being overly simplistic and devoid of scientific support.
The Most Famous Book
Chopra's most famous book is "The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success," which outlines principles for achieving success and happiness in all areas of life. The book has sold millions of copies worldwide and has been translated into over 40 languages. Over his career, Chopra has also been a part of several controversies. His detractors claim that he advocates for questionable health practices and that his teachings are pseudoscientific. His utilization of Indian spiritual traditions in his art has drawn accusations of cultural appropriation from other people. Deepak Chopra is a well-known author and speaker on topics related to spirituality, health, and well-being.
Here are some of his most popular quotes:
- "The highest levels of performance come to people who are centered, intuitive, creative, and reflective - people who know to see a problem as an opportunity." - "To make the right choices in life, you have to get in touch with your soul. To do this, you need to experience solitude, which most people are afraid of, because in the silence you hear the truth and know the solutions." - "In the midst of movement and chaos, keep stillness inside of you." - "Happiness is a continuation of happenings which are not resisted." - "The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it." - "You must find the place inside yourself where nothing is impossible." - "We are not victims of aging, sickness, and death. These are part of scenery, not the seer, who is immune to any form of change. This seer is the spirit, the expression of eternal being." - "The less you open your heart to others, the more your heart suffers." - "Success comes when people act together; failure tends to happen alone." - "The intention to live as long as possible isn't one of the mind's best intentions, because quantity isn't the same as quality." - "All great changes are preceded by chaos." - "The most creative act you will ever undertake is the act of creating yourself." - "The soul is the same in all living creatures, although the body of each is different." - "You are not a drop in the ocean. You are the entire ocean in a drop." - "The past is gone, the future is not yet here, and if we do not go back to ourselves in the present moment, we cannot be in touch with life." - "Love doesn't need reason. It speaks from the irrational wisdom of the heart." - "The universe is not outside of you. Look inside yourself; everything that you want, you already are." - "Whatever relationships you have attracted in your life at this moment, are precisely the ones you need in your life at this moment. There is a hidden meaning behind all events, and this hidden meaning is serving your own evolution." - "Silence is the great teacher, and to learn its lessons, you must pay attention to it. There is no substitute for the creative inspiration, knowledge, and stability that come from knowing how to contact your core of inner silence." - "We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience." - "You alone are the judge of your worth, and your goal is to discover infinite worth in yourself, no matter what anyone else thinks." - "The secret of attraction is to love yourself. Attractive people judge neither themselves nor others. They are open to gestures of love. They think about love, and express their love in every action." - "The ultimate goal of all goals is to be happy. What makes you happy is not as important as the fact that you are happy." - "We are all co-creators of the universe. You are not a victim of circumstance; you are a partner in creation." - "The most important decision you make is to be in a good mood." - "Success and happiness root in who you are being." - "To think is to practice brain chemistry." - "The Ego, however, is not who you really are. The ego is your self-image; it is your social mask; it is the role you are playing." - "The intention to create a better life is a powerful force in the universe." - "The purpose of life is the expansion of happiness."
Conclusion
Deepak Chopra has had a significant influence on the alternative health and self-help movements, despite the controversy surrounding his teachings. His teachings on spiritual development and the mind-body link have motivated a great number of individuals to lead happier, healthier lives. There is no doubt that Deepak Chopra has had a big influence on contemporary spiritual thought and practice, regardless of one's agreement with his teachings. Read the full article

Origins of Meditation
Meditation has been practiced since time immemoria. The earliest known evidence of its practice dates back to at least 3,500 years ago.
Ancient wall art from the Indus Valley depicts individuals in a seated posture with their legs crossed and eyes narrowed – indicative of a meditative state.
The Vedic scriptures, dating 1500 BCE re-inforce this idea by mentioning “dhyana”, Sanskrit for meditation, as one part of yoga’s seven stages.
Finally, Lao-Tze is credited as being responsible for popularizing his own version based on Doaist teachings during China’s period between 300 and 600 CE.
From the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, meditation has been travelling far and wide since antiquity. As it traversed along the trading routes of the Silk Road, its journey across different cultures adapted certain aspects while maintaining elements that have spanned time.
Inspiring even religious practices such as Islam, Judaism and Christianity centuries later.
Benefits Of Focused Meditation
Modern Adaptation of Focused Meditation
Meditation has come a long way, having gone from the margins of society in the past to part of popular culture today. Its rise was spearheaded by Deepak Chopra’s 1993 book Ageless Body, Timeless Mind and its subsequent promotion on Oprah Winfrey’s show.
It isn’t only reserved for spiritualists anymore, medical science is exploring all sorts of potential benefits associated with meditating regularly as well!
The incredible practice of meditation is gaining traction with increasing speed due to its vast benefits in sustaining a state of mental and emotional wellbeing.
In the past five years, this ancient custom has experienced an impressive threefold rise among Americans alone – many opting for mindfulness as their sacrament into improved quality living.
Although various traditions have breathed life into meditative practices over time, modern enthusiasts are now spoilt for choice when it comes to arraying distinctive interpretations ranging from simple methods like breathing exercises all the way up comprehensive ones such as yoga!
Different Types of Meditation
With so many options available, the art of meditation is an individual journey that can lead to both inner and outer awareness. From quieting the mind in stillness or focusing on sounds, religious or non-religious practices, there’s a type of meditation for every personality!
The potential benefits are limitless: from improving lifestyle habits to tapping into universal understanding. Why not embark on your own discovery today?
Concentration
Concentrative meditation helps to develop and refine a sharper level of focus, giving your mind the ability to stay present on one thing for an extended period.
Developing this skill could range from visualizing in your head, looking at something tangible like counting mala beads or painting with brush strokes.
Even repeating words or phrases as part of mantra meditations is popularly practiced today by many people who turn to Transcendental Meditation practices such as Maharishi Manesh Yogi’s method.
Vipasana is an ancient Buddhist practice of meditation that unites mindful awareness with concentrated focus. It encourages finding balance in a chaotic world by honing the mental strength to center attention on one point and gain clarity about thoughts, emotions, and experiences.
Mindfulness
Mindfulness meditation has become increasingly popular in the Western world, offering an immediate and simple way to focus on one’s present moment.
By concentrating solely on their breath – inhaling and exhaling – anyone can quickly access a state of mindful reflection using either the focused-attention or open-awareness technique.
This practice allows individuals to gain insight into themselves as well as live more fully in every single moment that life brings them.
Through meditation, we can free ourselves from judgement by simply being aware of our thoughts as they pass through. We open up to a multitude of feelings and recollections that may arise in the present moment.
Creating an opportunity for us to observe objectively without any criticism or control.
Compassion
Compassion gives us the ability to see beyond ourselves, leading to a greater understanding of others and their struggles. Through compassion we can show genuine empathy for one another and help create an environment where joy is something that everyone deserves.
No matter who they are or what their circumstances may be.
Compassion meditation is a powerful practice that can bring great reward – not only in your relationships with others, but also within yourself.
Start by expressing loving energy towards yourself and repeating the mantra: “May you be happy, may you be tranquil, may you be delivered from hardship.”
Then spread this compassionate blessing to someone close to heart before gradually widening your circle of kindness further through offering it up even those who are more challenging for us.
In time, compassion meditation will bless our lives with greater joy and help forge stronger connections between all living beings around us.
Body Scan
Through body scan meditation, you can explore the inner depths of your being and gain useful insight. Starting at the toes, mindfully observe every sensation throughout each part of your body, whether it be positive or negative.
Tune into how emotions manifest in physical form; with practice, discover newfound knowledge about yourself that may help to reduce stress levels!
How to Practice a Focused Meditation
Choose something to anchor your focus on
Mindfulness meditation is a practice of intense focus and concentration. To remain present, choose an anchor point on which you can concentrate.
It might be your breath or something in the room around you. However, make sure that this “anchor” won’t pull away your attention. Otherwise any efforts to meditate will go wasted! So pick wisely – look for simple yet effective ways to keep yourself conscious throughout the mindful journey ahead.
Declutter The Mind
Ready to upgrade your focus? Declutter The Mind has you covered! With guided centred meditations in the “focus” category, from five minutes to twenty, it won’t take long for you to sharpen up.
Whether looking for mindfulness meditation on focusing intentness and staying concentrated or developing one’s focus skills through learning, start honing that attention span today with Declutter The Mind.
Breathe from Your Stomach
Anxiousness comes with shallow, chest-led breathing that is far from ideal for a focused attention meditation. To breathe more naturally and optimally.
Try redirecting breath to the abdomen as infants do instinctively. However, this doesn’t often stick around into adulthood when chest breathing becomes our default.
So if you’re looking to gain composure in times of stress or strain your mindfulness practices through deep breaths, start taking them from within your stomach instead!
Make Yourself Comfortable
Take the time to find a position that is comfortable and calming for you when meditating. Whether it’s cross-legged on the ground, sitting upright in an armchair or even lying down.
Choose what feels best so as not to be swayed by physical distractions like aches or tingles. Depending upon how long your meditation session will last, from just five minutes up to 60 minutes of mindfulness practice, remember though that if reclining too much may make staying awake tricky!
Block the Mind’s Chatter
Using focused meditation practices, it’s possible to gain control over your inner dialogue. To rein in wayward thoughts and stay on track, you can “stop” them intentionally or simply draw attention to the thinking process when distracted by an itch or other sensation by naming it aloud (“itch”).
Doing so keeps mental wandering at bay while allowing for a deeper level of concentration during meditative exercises.
Re-Focus Your Attention
Keep your awareness through the journey of meditation by continuously returning to focus on breathing or any other point that you have chosen.
Don’t be disheartened if during this process, thoughts start wandering away, it’s normal! Simply take a pause and gentlly bring yourself back in line with what you intended to accomplish.
You don’t need to start again from square one, but remember replaying is always possible when needed. With more practise comes greater control over maintaining concentration throughout.
Losing Focus is Normal
During meditation, it’s natural for the mind to wander. By commandeering our thoughts with a simple “cease,” we bring awareness back to the current task and halt any further distraction from daydreams or other wandering topics that seek out attention.
Focusing on something like breath can help keep us firmly rooted in reality. However, sometimes even this isn’t enough when determination is needed to take control of our minds again!
Use a Particular Object that Helps You Best
Engaging in meditation requires concentration and focus, as this practice allows us to observe our internal world closely.
Whether we choose to close our eyes or remain alert during meditation will depend on the individual’s preference.
You can use your breath if closing your eyes works for you, but selecting an external object such as a wall hanging or gazing out of a window may be more beneficial too.
Shutting your eyes tight might help intensify one’s contemplation. Ultimately it is up to each person to decide what source they need concentrate their energies upon!
Focus Your Attention
Whether it’s the smell of freshly baked cookies or a captivating view, stay conscious and connected to your environment. As you observe with fascination and focus on what surrounds you, try not to strain too hard, just let yourself be embraced by what lies before you!
Notice Bodily Sensations
Meditation is a great way to stay present in the moment and tune into your body.
During meditation, you may be aware of physical sensations that range from pounding headaches through to itchy skin or uneasy feelings in your gut relating to posture, all distractions if left unchecked!
But by actively engaging with these bodily reactions during meditative sessions, they can become part of the concentration process rather than disrupting it.
A useful accompaniment technique here is focusing on breathing which brings an excellent level of depth and purposeful mindfulness when practising focused meditation.
Keep in Mind Why You Started a Focused Meditation
With regular meditation, your concentration will skyrocket and stress levels plummet. Don’t let negative thoughts of work or home drag you down.
Instead, recall why you began focused meditating in the first place to motivate yourself through tough times. This powerful practice can increase psychological wellness on all fronts!
Don’t let unexpected obstacles halt your focus. Whether it’s the kids, furry friends or constant thoughts vying for attention, these are going to be an inevitable part of any meditative journey.
With perseverance and patience you will find yourself in a sea of stillness… eventually!

Tell us about yourself.: I was diagnosed with depression at the age of thirty and bipolar disorder at thirty-five. I have been living with these illnesses since 1991 and have had numerous hospitalizations. Two psychiatrists told me at age thirty-nine that I would never work full time again. I have proven them wrong. I have written two books. The F Book: 7 F’s to Creating Your Fantastic Future teaches you how incorporating these seven F’s will lead to a happier, healthier, more joy-filled life. The other is called My Journey Back to Myself which depicts my struggles and recovery from bipolar disorder. As an Inspirational Speaker I share with others my coping strategies for living with bipolar disorder and how I learned to be a productive member of society again and thrive despite how I was labelled. My talk, “7 F’s to Creating Your Fantastic Future” outlines seven words all starting with the letter F that led to my recovery. Those Fs are Family, Friends, Fun, Fitness, Fulfillment, Finances and Faith. I have spoken at hospitals, conferences, Rotary Clubs, libraries, colleges and universities. My home is in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada. In the summer I love taking care of my vegetable garden and eating fresh from it every day. Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?: I grew up on a farm one hour north of Toronto. This gave me the discipline I needed to write a book. Do you have any unusual writing habits? I write when I feel inspired. Currently I am writing speeches and blogs. What authors have influenced you? I grew up on a farm one hour north of Toronto. This gave me the discipline I needed to write a book. Do you have any advice for new authors? If you are passionate about what you are writing about the ideas will come; don't force them. What is the best advice you have ever been given? When I was very sick my mother looked me in the eye and said "Why not you?" It made me realize I would have to deal with my health issues and I wasn't immune from problems. It gave me the strength I needed to pick myself up and continue on. What are you reading now? Universal Human by Gary Zukav What's your biggest weakness? I get distracted by having fun and don't write as much as I should. What is your favorite book of all time? 5 mindfulness techniques for letting go of control
Being in constant fight-or-flight mode makes us more anxiety-prone, and getting out of that mindset requires relinquishing our need for control.
Tumblr media
BY ANISA PURBASARI HORTON
If there’s anything that’s certain in life, it’s that things will happen that are outside of our control. Sure, we can change our environments to reduce the chances of certain things happening and do our best to prepare for worst-case scenarios, but we can’t predict if (or when) they will happen.
As a result, mindfulness experts and psychologists often tout the benefit of letting go of control and accepting uncertainty. An excessive need to control can lead to unproductive stress, because it often puts people in an extended “fight or flight” mode. As authors Judah Pollack and Olivia Fox Cabane previously wrote in Fast Company, operating in this state “exhausts our nervous systems” and “leaves us wiped out, jittery, craving an end.”
THE IMPORTANCE OF LETTING OF CONTROL
When our brain is in this state, it’s fatigued and desperate to create certainty, so it tries to do just that. According to Pollack and Fox Cabane, we often try to do it in one of three ways. We jump into decisions quickly without thinking through the consequences because we want to “lock” something in, we become paralyzed and do nothing at all, or we rush to assumptions to fill the gaps in our knowledge. None of these responses leave us feeling more certain—in fact, they typically end up making us more stressed.
Deepak Chopra, a prominent alternative medicine advocate and author of Metahuman: Unleashing Your Infinite Potential, says that one of his principles that he stands by when it comes to mindfulness is completely detaching from outcomes. He says he doesn’t have any goal or hopes on whether or not his teaching will result in positive change—he simply chooses to share his ideas with those who are interested in learning about them. “At my age,” Chopra says, “I am independent of hopes and despair.”
Helen Weng, a clinical psychologist and neuroscientist at the University of California San Francisco, mirrors this sentiment, suggesting that we’re better off focusing on the intention of our actions, rather than insisting on (or “clinging to”) a certain outcome. She says, “If you practice acting with intentions that align with your values (such as compassion, helping others, creativity), that may change what is happening, but you cannot expect a certain fixed outcome. Things rarely turn out as we expect them to.”
1. IDENTIFY YOUR TRIGGERS
The first step of letting go of control is to identify what triggers your need to control things. Do you find yourself anticipating the reaction of your coworkers who have said hurtful things to you in the past? Does your friend’s success lead you to question your own life and make you stressed out about whether or not you’ll experience something similar in the future? Once you realize what they are, you can start to experiment with methods that prevent you from going down into a worry spiral. One simple method is to take a breath and remind yourself that the need to control doesn’t arise from a true “fight or flight” situation.
2. DO A “MENTAL DUMP” OF YOUR FEELINGS
Sometimes, the need to control is a reaction to unpleasant feelings. Emotions are difficult to regulate, and you might be craving a sense of certainty because you don’t want bad feelings to take over.
But unprocessed and suppressed emotions don’t help you feel a sense of contentment. In fact, they do the opposite by making you more prone to stress, anxiety, and irrational outbursts. One way to process your feelings is to write it all down and do a “mental dump” of what you’re thinking. This can help “get the negativity out of your system,” Sherry Case, author of Write for Recovery: Exercises for Heart, Mind and Spirit previously told Fast Company.
3. EMPLOY SOME DISTANCE
Sometimes, your need for control is related to other people’s thoughts and actions. A coworker might continue to make jokes that rub you the wrong way, even after you’ve requested them to stop. You might have a strong disagreement with a friend, and you’re feeling frustrated that you can’t make them see things the way that you do.
As psychology professor and Fast Company contributor Art Markman previously wrote, you need to let go of the anger that makes you want to control other people’s actions in the first place. He wrote, “Often, when you’re angry with somebody, you tend to think repeatedly about the thing they did to you, which keeps you emotionally engaged with the way you were wronged. Psychologists call this repetitious thought pattern ‘rumination,’ after the term for how cows chew their cud.”
According to Markman, the best way to deal with rumination is to create some psychological distance. For some people, that may require physical distance, but if that’s not possible, Markman suggests turning your focus to other aspects of your life, or see it from the perspective of one of your friends. “By pushing yourself to see it from the outside, you’ll be coaxing your mind to think of the situation more abstractly. As a result, the specific details of what that person did will be less available to you, and so they’ll have less influence on your emotional state.”
4. CHOOSE TO DEAL WITH IT IN THE FUTURE
If your need to control stems from what you know to be irrational worrying, perhaps one of the best ways to deal with it is to dedicate a time in the future to worry about it. When I was having trouble sleeping due to stress and anxiety, a sleep expert told me, “If the anxiety is producing worry, the best thing to do is to try to put that worry into a daytime situation or into an awake situation.”
Choosing to dedicate time to “worrying” actually made me less likely to worry, because I realized that it wasn’t worth filling my headspace with things that I don’t have any control over. In turn, it became easier for me to be more at peace with uncertainty and unpredictability.
5. LEARN TO SEE UNCERTAINTY AS A PART OF LIFE
We tend to ask questions and generate “what-ifs” as an attempt to introduce some certainty when we’re uncomfortable with the unknown. But as psychologist Simon Rego previously told Stephanie Vozza, a more mindful way to approach this is to build tolerance for uncertainty. Then, you can slowly identify which of your worries are “useful” and which are making you “unnecessarily miserable.” You can choose to let go of the latter and prepare “strategic solutions” for the former. For example, if you’re worried about a break-in, accept that someone attempting to burglarize your home isn’t something you can control. You can, however, take an action, such as installing a security system.
He goes on to say, “As we lean in, we can actually develop control over the worries. It makes it easier to let them go as they emerge, jotting them down for later, then returning our attention to what we were doing.”

This Is the Guide to Yoga and Meditation We Wish We Had Growing Up
Tumblr media
I was 9 years of ages when my parents, Rita and Deepak Chopra, learned exactly how to practice meditation. Despite the fact that they were from India, they uncovered meditation as young immigrants in Boston, where my dad was a stressed-out, miserable physician. Meditation changed their lives by offering them a tool to handle tension as well as to be a lot more in control of negative behaviors, however much more notably, to attach with their souls with experiencing silence.
For my bro as well as me, reflection was appealing because our parents’ technique improved our domesticity: We came to be a better, extra linked family. I really feel meditation was one of the most precious present my parents ever gave me, due to the fact that it provided an anchor to decrease, take a breath, and have internal confidence as I experienced phases of discovery and also uncertainty. When I ended up being a mom, I shared the lessons I gained from my parents with my little girls, their friends, as well as our community.
Meditation, mindfulness strategies, as well as yoga are old-time practices that have actually survived generations. For kids today, these methods are as relevant as ever, specifically in a time when hyperstimulation from social media sites, overscheduling, and a general loss of silence is the standard. Just breathing itself might be easy, yet it is also incredibly powerful.
Here's a simple method to assist the youngsters in your life take care of stress—the initial action to a lifelong journey of self-discovery.
Step No. 1: Speak To Kids About What Their Breathing Is Attempting to Tell Them
Breathing is nourishing to your body. When you inhale, oxygen provides your cells the energy they need to keep you healthy. Breath promotes activity and also circulation.
As you breathe out, you release carbon dioxide as well as toxins (poor chemicals) from your body. Consider it: breathing is what tells you that you are actually alive!
Your thoughts are linked to your breath. When your mind is racing with ideas, specifically when you obtain delighted (satisfied or otherwise so pleased), your breathing generally gets much faster. Think around when you are regarding to jump on a roller rollercoaster or get in a haunted residence: Do you feel like your breathing gets faster?
What regarding when you are actually dismayed due to the fact that your moms and dads got mad at you or you had a battle with your friend? In in between cries, your breathing is usually quicker, as well. Maybe you get so distressed that it seems like your breath is as well quick and you simply can’t reduce. And afterwards, instantly, you need to take a deep breath to calm down.
Or do you discover your breathing expanding faster when you feel you have excessive homework or a lot of extracurricular points to do?
When you are bewildered, you begin to experience that worried, distressed feeling—almost like butterflies trembling in your belly. Taking a breath purposefully can be one of the most handy means to get you back in control of any type of circumstance. It can also help get you all set to deal with challenges, to take a time out as well as believe before you act to make sure that you make smart decisions that feel ideal to you. Your breath is constantly with you—a good friend indeed!
Tumblr media
Step No. 2: Help Children Learn Just How to Merely Breathe
Right now, take a deep breath. Take in. And out. Once again. Breathe in and out.
Do you discover that when you are breathing your mind quits auto racing? Attempt thinking a thought as well as breathing at the exact same time. For example, claim your name in your mind and afterwards take a breath. You will discover that your mind jumps from believing your name to observing your breath. It is tough to do both at the very same time!
In in this manner, breathing aids you manage your racing ideas. You can manage what’s taking place in your head by transforming just how you breathe. When you are in control of your thoughts, you will act extra calmly, will certainly be much more relaxed, and also will usually discover you are happier.
Breathe. In. Out. Breathe again.
Think of your breath as an anchor. No issue what is taking place around you, no matter just how active you are, despite that borders you, you can constantly discover your breath. It is a stable and also protected component of you.
You take a breath when you sleep and when you dream. You likewise breathe when you meditate. Breath is the life pressure that keeps your mind and body aware and healthy.
Step No. 3: Teach Children This Breathing Meditation
Find a comfy, peaceful area. You can do this reflection anywhere and at any moment. Switch off all devices as well as the television so that you are not sidetracked. This will certainly last just one minute—you can do it!
Sit pleasantly. If you feel OK doing so, close your eyes. If you choose to maintain your eyes open, that is alright, also. Take a deep breath in with your nose. Breathe in deeply to make sure that your lungs fill up up.
As you inhale, really feel just how your stomach goes out. Time out for simply one 2nd. And also currently breathe out, blowing out gradually from your mouth.
On your following breath in, attempt to take in for 3 seconds. One. Two. 3. Currently, time out for two seconds. One. Two. As well as take a breath out for four seconds. One. 2. 3. 4. Discover the rhythm that functions best for you. Inhale. Pause. Breathe out.
After one minute, or once you feel you are done, open your eyes (if they were closed) and say thank you to yourself for offering your mind and also body this experience.
If you do this meditation regularly, it will certainly come to be a behavior and it will become a secure, satisfied time for you. You can always locate your breath no issue where you are.

The Unethical Skeptic
So, in my searches, I came across a fake skepticism site called The Ethical Skeptic.  The original article I found was “Carl Sagan was wrong.”  It claimed Carl Sagan’s Baloney Detection Kit (BDK) is misused by false (warning sign) skeptics to enact “denial, ignorance and application of ‘skepticism’ outside the context of neutrality and sincere investigation” and the BDK is flat out incorrect.   Hhhmmmm....  Now, this isn’t the first critique of Carl Sagan’s BDK, but nothing as strong as this.
The next paragraph starts, “I am a Carl Sagan fan, don’t get me wrong.”  This statement is to disarm you from anything that might prevent you from critically examining his writing, thus giving him a chance to state his case with an “open mind.”  Not unreasonable, but you have to understand - in the words of Admiral Ackbar - “It’s a trap!”  Marc Anthony used the same trick to incite the people against the conspirators who killed Caesar in William Shakespeare’s play Julius Caesar.  The people, if memory serves, hate Cesar, and Marc Anthony’s words, “I cam to bury Caesar, not praise him,” uses rhetoric to disarm the people, because they fully expect him to defend Caesar.  Marc then goes on to do exactly what he claims he’s not doing, as well as use sarcasm to describe Brutus and the conspirators by calling them “honourable men.”  It’s designed to disarm what you expect, and manipulate your emotions with the use of rhetoric.
As I perused the site, thinking initially that it might someone who misunderstood Sagan’s BDK, or was seeking to bolster the methods espoused by Sagan.  How wrong I was.  It’s a feel good site designed to use passive-aggressive means and logical fallacies to fool you into accepting it’s apparent reasonableness.
Example 1:
The False Skeptic
Tumblr media
The “false” skeptic is the “No True Scotsman” fallacy.  “I am an ‘ethical’ skeptic, and all others who disagree with me are ‘false.’”  Ethical skeptics are “open minded.”  This means not rejecting what the site’s message, which a reasonable and ethical skeptic would not.  You are a reasonable and ethical skeptic.  Are you not?
Just like my daughter says when I ask her why she doesn’t believe me when I lie, “Because your lying.”
Other things are
wholesale dismissal of what isn’t ethical skepticism, “... the poseur habits of appeal to authority masquerade and insistence on abductive/panductive inference..”  (WTF?)
Quote actually used:  “Whenever you have someone who is a professional skeptic, you should be suspicious of them” ~ Deepak Chopra”    Anyone sourcing Deepak Chopra as a means of determining skepticism should be immediately suspect.  There is nothing positive that Deepak Chopra can say that can’t be said by reliable skeptics and other trustworthy sources.
Ethical Skepticism considers anything else to be an “abuse of Cartesian Doubt as a racket of a priori simplistic predictive based knowledge, self delusion, and Methodical Cynicism.”
Anything but “Ethical Skepticism” is propaganda.
Tumblr media
But I feel at a certain point that I’m entirely correct that this is a No True Scotsman Fallacy.  The one claiming that someone else is not a “True” Scotsman (skeptic) should actually be a Scotsman himself, not a straw man.
Example 2:
Tumblr media
Open mindedness.  This was an issue early on in CSICOP (predecessor to SCI).  Marcello Truzzi felt that the members should be “open” to all things.  This is good on the face of it, but presents a problem.  At what point do you “close” the mind?  If you set out to test something, say cold fusion, and you can’t, do you immediately say cold fusion cannot exist.  The evidence points this way.  But if you say the technology doesn’t exist to prove it, are you being unrealistic, or a “true skeptic.”  If you conduct 10 test, and they’re all negative, do you stop?  50?  100?  1,000?  Do you keep testing until you prove it’s real?  We cannot say with 100% certainty that cold fusion isn’t possible, but it defies the known laws of physics.  Cold fusion as claimed today in its various mutations does not exist.  We may eventually be technologically advanced enough someday to do it.  Until then it’s, at best, a proposition.  If you can’t prove something, do you try and try again.  If a man is on trial for murder, do we try him repeatedly until he’s found guilty?  He might be guilty, but the evidence just isn’t there.
In Marcello Truzzi’s opinion, the psychic phenomenon (the occult and paranormal) was real, and if investigated enough, would eventually prove that it was real.  His problem was:
He believed it to begin with, or wanted it to be real
Considered himself “the skeptic’s skeptic,” and all other to be pseudoskeptics.
Open mindedness is about being receptive to new things.  But skepticism is about following the evidence.  Some things are shut until an extraordinary claim is proven with extraordinary evidence.  Not wishful thinking, not “trust me,” and certainly not about researching something to death, even though it’s failed thousands of times before.
Example 3:
Tumblr media
Emotion.  We are creatures of emotion.  They have places in our life, but they shouldn’t control our lives.  There is the Appeal to Emotion.  Ethical Skepticism focuses on value, i.e. “love, understanding and alleviating suffering.”
Example 4:
A misunderstanding of Skepticism
Tumblr media
The site claims that “social skeptics” bypass science, and is a priori thinking.  That doubt, belief, ignorance of risk, and “social pressure to accede to stacked provisional knowledge” are all to be suspended.  In other words, accept what I say.  Even as the site denigrates dogma.
It even quotes Steve Jobs, “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Stay hungry. Stay foolish.”  Yes, the Steve Jobs, who tried to become a Buddhist monk, that rejected medical science and relied on woo for too long to cure his pancreatic cancer.  He regretted his decision.  Steve Jobs is also seen by some as a tyrant and manipulator.  I won’t speak to these claims, but it is interesting to juxtapose that statement with the man’s behavior.
If you made it this far, congratulations, and thanks.
So the “Ethical”
Tumblr media
“Skeptic”
Tumblr media
is really anything but either, just a self-righteous hypocrite promoting uncritical acceptance.  The site is disingenuous bullshit wrapped in a facade of reasonableness, sprinkled with actual skepticism to give it an air of sincerity and packaged in passive-aggression to deliver you from the likes of those who would “rejects both you and your woo.”
The whole purpose of the site is not to promote skepticism or science, but to use skepticism against itself and fool people, and give them a reason to deny anyone who questions the woo (it even gives examples), and steer people away from critical thinking.
In short it is fake skepticism.
