Friendly reminder that last year (2021) in Italy, a group of politicians (among who was Mrs. Cirinnà, the woman who proposed and passed the law on gay civil unions) was trying to pass a law that would protect queer people, disabled people and women from hate crimes.

And you know who opposed it (aside from the right wing)? TERFs.

Because they didn't want to band together with trans people.

And the right wingers brought them up as a "gotcha!" to the other evil queers, and then tried to get trans people removed from the legislation, so we wouldn't be protected.

To my knowledge, the group said no.

In the end, the law wasn't passed anyways.

Out of pure hatred for trans people, TERFs (so-called feminists) went against a law that would have protected cishet women as well.

They are not your friends and they don't want to protect you.

Cloe Bianco was an Italian transgender teacher. Because of her coming out to her students, she was suspended from teaching, mocked and insulted by politicians on the news, and kept away from the students she loved so much. Cloe Bianco recently killed herself by setting fire to the roulotte where she lived. This is my best attempt at translating her last blog post in English, certainly missing all the nuance and depth of the original piece. Trans lives matter.

An ugly woman does not have the opportunities to recount about themselves that life offers to other people available to her, except just for a very small hole from which to manifest her own existence. An ugly woman cannot express and live her own desires in a carefree manner. It's better to go where one goes mostly unnoticed. The "possible" for an ugly woman is so strict that it takes the breath away. It's about always existing softly, in the dim light, on the tip of your toes, always to the sides of the social periphery.

I am ugly, decidedly ugly, I'm a transgender woman. I'm an offense against my gender, an offense against the female gender. I'm not even pityful, not even that.

Today, my free death, so ends everything about me.

Immediately after the publication of this announcement, I will begin my autochiria, even better defined as my free death. In this last day, I celebrated with a delicious meal and great Bacchus's nectars, tasting for the last time wines and foods I enjoy. This simple celebration for the end of my life has been accompanied with the listening of some good music in my little wheeled house, where I will now stay. This is the most aulic way of living my life at its best and ending it with the same style. Here ends all.

Se ti sei sentita in causa, significa che il mio post ha raggiunto il suo scopo. E di questo mi compiaccio, ma allo stesso tempo mi urta. Ma sai una cosa? Ho sofferto di bullismo a scuola, l'odio che mi viene rivolto è una cosa che ha smesso di scalfirmi da tempo, non ci do più peso (e per questo da un lato ringrazio i miei bulli, mi hanno insegnato ad essere forte e, nonostante i miei 1.53 d'altezza, ad essere grande). Ma immagino il caso in cui tu avessi inviato questo messaggio ad una persona più fragile di me, più insicura di me (ed io lo sono), immagina ricevere un insulto per una cosa che non hai deciso tu, una cosa che non è una tua scelta. A me piacciono le rose a te i tulipani, a me piacciono i broccoli a te no. A me piacciono le donne, a te gli uomini. È una cosa normale, esistente nell'uomo da quando è apparso sulla Terra. "Per Dio è contro natura" no! Dio ha creato (per chi crede) ogni creatura, in ogni sua forma.

Il tuo messaggio è stata la prova tangente, del motivo per cui servisse una legge simile. Frequento l'università, una volta finito, lavorerò, pagherò le tasse allo Stato di tasca mia... Eppure, a quanto pare, non ho il diritto ad essere tutelata.

L'aggressione omofoba è "futili motivi", il tentato suicidio non merita nemmeno una menzione, ci fosse qualcuno che gli ha chiesto come si vive sta cosa di avere Manuel ogni giorno sotto gli occhi nonostante tutti sappiano di cosa è successo. Since the triumph of the right-wing alliance in Italy's general election, advocates for women and the LGBTQ community are worried about their future.

Many fear far-right leader Giorgia Meloni, who is set to become the next Prime Minister, could adopt anti-queer and anti-abortion policies.

She gained prominence with a 2019 speech declaring "I am a Giorgia, I am a mother, I am Christian, and you cannot take that away from me."

Her party's program states it is against marriage equality, gay parents adopting children, and surrogate motherhood.

Alessia Crocini is President of Italy's Rainbow Families, an association with 5,000 members.

She had to go outside Italy with her former partner to get artificial insemination treatment so they could have a child together.

But back in Italy, only her partner, who gave birth to her son, is recognized as his parent. Crocini has no legal rights as the parent of her son under Italian law.

"It is terrible news that we were expecting," she said about the victory of Giorgia Meloni and the Brothers of Italy party.

"The polls were clear. But when something like this materializes, becomes real, it is pretty shocking."

Crocini said following the victory she began receiving messages from members of her association. "There are people who I do not know who today are writing to me on Instagram 'I am afraid', 'I don't know what to do', 'I am very worried', I want to cry," she said.

Italy ranks 23rd in the EU when it comes to protections for LGBTQ people. It is the only major country in Western Europe that is yet to legalise same-sex marriage

After many failed attempts to find a legal path for homosexuals to marry, in 2016 the Italian parliament approved a law on "civil unions" between couples of the same sex.

The law does not grant the same rights as same sex marriage, denying them any parental rights and making it impossible for homosexual couples to adopt.

Fears over women's rights in Italy

Other activists fear that Meloni's stance will impact women's access to abortions.

In the eastern region of Marche, which has been governed by Meloni's party for a few years, abortion rights have already been eroding on the local level. 

The small town of Ascoli remains the only place where women can receive an abortion because many doctors refuse to carry out the procedure in the area due to ethical beliefs. 

"We have plenty of stories like these, too many. Elsewhere, women are forced to move to another region, others have to get an illegal abortion, some go abroad or other women dont even have the option of an abortion," explained a family planning officer in Ascoli. 

Certain experts fear that Meloni's future policies could bring a general setback for civil rights.

"I think the single most dangerous element of Giorgia Meloni is not a return to fascism in Italy but a cutting down of civil rights for women, for gay people, for people who are not white immigrants," said Alain Fridman, a US political analyst in an interview with Euronews.

"I think Giorgia Meloni has a social policy that is perfectly similar to Donald Trump... I think she will take away or try to take away many civil rights"

Potevano mettere in piedi un governo di centrosinistra, ma avrebbe avuto contro il 60% dei potenziali elettori. Potevano farne uno tecnico, ma avrebbe subito l’ostilità del 40% dei cittadini con diritto di voto. E allora?
