my personal idea of how this album works as a metaphor is keyed on the idea of discovering oneself as transgendered increasingly in time. it's probably keyed through my own experience but all art is, basically. so,
starting with coelacanth, a song named after a creature widely known as a living fossil, ie focusing on the notion of an old animal. a dying animal. the song feels lethargic throughout and mellow. "the ghost rots away through the embrace of its own gaze" something already dead rots further, further, by the way of its self perception. coelacanth is about the body as a condemning routine.
motions is about the machine-like experience of trying to feel better and find direction while stuck in the prism of other people's gaze. "motions", as in trying to move, but without a particular direction.
slip under the door is about seeking escape. i know this feeling much too well... it's pure rage and anger at realizing of not being afforded any bodily autonomy.
guitar song is about writing about these things. struggling to delineate one's experiences while feeling a burning need to express them nonetheless.
rare animal is the key to the whole album posed as a question. it's at once self acceptance, seeing oneself as a rare beast, the idea of the romantic relationship here is just a metaphor about one's relationship with gender: the song asks, is it really ok to be so attached to something that gives you nothing but a meandering sense of emptiness? DB cooper's case here is being used as a way to talk about a "previous self" disappearing. it's trying to use the image of transness as deviant to the purpose of being admonishing, something dangerous and that the wider public is unable to understand, and then trying to answer to that by saying "ok. and? i know what happened to DB cooper. he got away with the ransom." which is to say that it's underlining that the presupposed 'deviancy' is fine. not being understood by everyone is fine; you can be a rare animal if you want to be.
cul-de-sac is self-reflection; it's about interpreting one's past and trying to understand why it took so long to figure out what was figured out in rare animal. and it turns out: it's the culture of normativity that the cul-de-sac, as the idyllic american suburb ideal represents as a whole. it's a symbol of the Nuclear Family. it's also interesting to not that a cul-de-sac is topographically a dead end. it doesn't change. it does not move.
whalefall is probably the one i'm less sure about how to fit in this whole interpretation of the album... but i feel like it's specifically about, in this key about the album as a whole Transgender Metaphor, a song about being denied the resources one might need for transitioning.
puppy is about the frustration of having to negotiate your existence through the terms of other people's sense of normalcy. you have to be a puppy to be accepted; you have to stay between the bars and service the people who almost mockingly and most definitely cruelly get to decide whereas your existence is ok or not.
the killer functions as a counterpart to puppy, where the killer is specifically about what happens when you don't comply by the rules of normalcy, and are treated like an animal to be hunted. so in a way it's specifically about the idea of how society operates on this fucked up notion of policing as a necessary corrective element within it.
the CIA then is about the way us trans people have to deal with our intimacy and privacy is seen as non-existent for the sake of someone's "innocent" curiosity and desire to objectify an entire person.
200 follows the CIA but on a positive note. it's about finding comfort and privacy through someone else, be it a specific individual or through community. 'autocannibal' i think might be a reference to conflicted feelings regarding finding a venue for sexuality that involves self-acceptance of one's body or somesuch? like it reminds me when i was really early on in my own journey as a trans person i was afraid of finding other people with my kind of body attractive and of being a chaser as a trans person.
commatose is what made me realize about this whole key of understanding the album. commatose is a play on comatose and comma as a feeling of lethargy and separation, but i think specifically the sense of separation is something deeply desired. the perspective the song has is specifically about feeling lethargic and needing something new: desiring a plastic death. plastic death is underlined as being specifically about plasticity, the ability for something to change and adapt, and death. which to me says that this album was about one thing: death as a means to change. the caterpillar dies, the butterfly lives.
abyss angel is about coming out. it's about being treated with supposed sympathy and empathy by someone who also makes no effort to actually understand you. it's also about understanding how it might be strange to see someone change so radically, and knowing that it doesn't excuse being mistreated because of it. it's also about finding repose in the abyss, being ok with changing, being something different from what you were before.
ok that was much longer than i expected. i hope it's not too weird seeing this huge ask in your inbox! i'm just sort of sending this as a kind of message in a bottle to show you my interpretation of your text. regardless of whether it's correct or not (i don't think such a thing exists in art) i hope you get something about reading this, whatever it is. thank you for making this album!
wow this is a really cool interpretation! i agree there is not a “correct” one and it’s been very interesting to see what others gather from it. i actually used to love to try to create narratives out of albums - i have a theory now that many well sequenced albums unintentionally recreate the monomyth & ours is intentionally the monomyth… this is what james joyce does to the brain… i think that this sort of idea of a journey into the unknown (in this case, an internal rather than external unknown) followed the reconciliation of two worlds does speak to a kind of transgender experience. “abyss angel” is this reconciliation of two contradictory realities, an expression of love & hate at once “i want to hurt you so bad” - i think that that does speak to the feeling of coming out. at least in my experience. i love what you’ve found in the music here and while it does speak much to what we had intended i love how the narrative being conveyed can vary to much person to person but everybody seems to get the emotional story the same. thank you for letting me be weird and pretentious about this.

Clone high season 2 episode concepts that would've actually been fun/cool
Abe tries to get into "real magic" to impress Joan by hanging out with Aleister Crowley and Arthur Conan Doyle. Jokes about people being too into Harry Potter being lame, jokes about paranormal teen shows a la Sabrina, etc.
Ronald Reagan and Nixon gets JFK into presidential themed crypto
Mean Girls episode parody about the Salem Witch trials or Bloody Queen Mary. They write themselves.
Episode where the main cast keep finding dead bodies, basically tripping over them, parody of teen murder mysteries, twist ending that the bodies are all failed/early clones (like the clone equivalent of a stillbirth. there was no murder)
Yellow Jackets Parody episode. the bus is out of gas or something and they're stuck in a large parking lot but act like they're in the woods.
Traveling championship episode. Debate team has to compete against high school where all the students are robots programmed to behave like the greatest scientists/leaders of all time
Trans episode parody. Abe realizes he isn't aligned with the modern republican party anymore and is therefore a Democrat, treated as a self-aware bad analogy maybe to the point of other characters finding it tasteless/annoying/Abe looking for attention
Cyberbullying episode parody, bonus points if it's gossip girl
Secret cousin/twin parody episode --- obvious starting point would be like. Anastasia because of how many people famously claimed to be her.
Supernatural teen romance parody episode. Abe tries to become a vampire with like Edgar Allen Poe or someone to impress Joan.
"Save the community center" episode --- This could be a great Harriet focused episode about like a bake sale or something to fund the arts but everyone is over exaggerating the stakes and the drama of being/not being a good baker. "My grandmother used to bake these cookies for me.....until she DIED" "My mother baked these cookies for me everyday I was in the hospital after falling out of that helicopter and they gave me the strength to survive" "I can't bake....my mom was always too busy with her business to teach me....." etc.
Big Mouth/Sex Ed parody episode. I think it would be really funny if THIS had been their technology episode, like getting a computer virus is treated like getting a STD and the cast talk about browsing the internet like it's casual sex, etc.
parody of those tasteless episodes about how like bullying leads to school shootings. Have like Abe or Joan or someone try to reach out to Napoleon or someone because they eat alone at lunch and because they think it's silly and mean everyone is afraid of them but then they are just like a violent maniac already. the solution is to get rid of him.
this might sound dumb but remember that one episode of jimmy neutron where jimmy was banned from the science fair for being too smart and killing the morale of any other student interested in participating? What if Clone High did that but as like a parody of anti-trans sports legislation. All the cloned scientists are banned from the science fair because it's an unfair advantage. All the Politian clones are banned from debate club, etc.
Social media/parasocial relationships parody episode where like JFK and Abe become obsessed with one another's online accounts not knowing it's them, despite Joan repeatedly telling them this, it becomes completely unhealthy but then whenever they do hang out together face-to-face they hate it and decide the parasocial relationship was better actually.
PRANK YOUTUBE/TIKTOK PARODY EPISODE ABOUT DB COOPER AND HOUDINI COME ON COME ON COME ON THIS ONE IS SO FUCKING OBVIOUS

I've been searching for over a year for this picture and I'm hoping you can help me! Years ago I saw a post about D.B. Cooper and it's one of the reblogs I've been trying to find. I think someone suggested that his skeleton would be found wearing the sunglasses and parachute. And someone drew a picture of what it looked like. It was a masterpiece! Can you find this post? 🥺
at first, i couldn't find anythin' on this post. searchin' for tumblr posts on D.B. Cooper yielded no results, absolutely nothin' on this specific post. however, that's when i took to my ol' accomplice google and asked for posts on "tumblr db cooper skeleton." this search yielded the first post in the thread, but i had to find the art. scrollin' through the reblogs, i quickly found the sketch of the man himself.
trackin' this post wasn't nearly as hard as trackin' the real guy. but at the very least i found him in some way. i hope you enjoy your post! have a great day!

Do you have any advice on how to become weirder?
I do, actually! My personal advice is to get into something that the average Joe would have a surface knowledge of, but wouldn’t know everything about. Like, for example, silent films, or the origin of urban legends, or Bob Fosse! (Or the Spielberg family. Y’know, like I did.)
OR you could get into true crime. But not stuff like Bundy and Dahmer. When I say true crime, I mean the kind that doesn’t involve murder. Like the disappearance of DB Cooper, or the Watergate scandal, or art heists!
And of course, you could always get into a foreign culture! There’s that meme on TikTok that’s like “filmbros when you say you want go watch a marvel movie instead of a three hour italian movie about a day in the life of a dog during wartime”. Well, I completely encourage you to be a filmbro! Watch some classic foreign films! Yiddish cinema! French New Wave movies! Giallo films! Bollywood movies! There’s so much to discover once you get past the mentality of “Oh, it’s weird”
And music! Get into foreign music! Foreign music is a great way to find out more about a culture and its history Like, what do they value? What are they writing songs about? What are their folk songs about? Here’s an example: When Yuri Gagarin completed his flight, people were writing a bunch of songs about him! My personal favorite is a Czech jazz song called “Dobrý Den, Majore Gagarine”
Best of luck to you on your quest to weirdness!

For the latest list of ask prompts :)
Best subject in high school?
Bedtime ritual?
Do you know your blood type?
Favorite urban legend?
Best subject in high school?
Of the sort of core classes, English was strongest by a fair margin.
I was good at the music classes I took, singing and orchestra. I was good at pool which I took instead of normal gym but that's like, not hard to be good at. I was pretty decent at metal working. (We were a very unfunded public school but managed through sheer numbers and the power of capitalism literally self-fund a lot of fun art classes.)
Bedtime ritual?
I keep it basic (boring). Brush teeth, strip, read, sleep. I read my own writing and occasionally cave and make small changes/fix things, because it's predictable and easy. If I read something someone else wrote I get sucked in and I'm just going to read for hours.
Did I make a video? Forget it. I don't remember and once I'm done editing you could not pay me enough to re-watch it. Did I write a fic? I've re-read it three dozen times.
Do you know your blood type?
Embarrassingly (especially as a former EMT) I do not.
Favorite urban legend?
Every single theory about DB Cooper. Questions were from this ask game.
