Once the new fascination with vampire hybrids dies down, what do you think will be the next big project/threat for the Volturi to manage?

I think once the fascination with dhampirs hybrids dies down, it will be replaced with fear and anxiety. I like the idea that vampirism is a virus, and like @kyilliki has pointed out, there must have been multiple strands of it at some point (or at least I think this was you?? I couldn’t find the exact post, unfortunately :c). For whatever reason, the strand we see in canon is the one that ~won over the other varieties. With the “recent” discovery of hybrids, it may be worrisome that the current strand of vampirism may become “inferior.”

For example-

Hybrids blend into society as a whole much better than vampires. Not only do they appear more human (the flush of blood in their cheeks, they can eat human food, etc), they may be less alarming to humans than vampires. Although the Cullens are described as being incredibly attractive, some primitive/subconscious part of the human brain in made uncomfortable by them. I’m assuming hybrids would set off less of these “alarms.” Vampires have stronger gifts and abilities than hybrids, but those traits aren’t necessary for a hybrid to successfully hunt and kill humans. Vampires in the twilight-universe are ridiculously overpowered compared to humans. This totally isn’t a bad thing, but a hybrids lower strength/agility/etc will not affect their ability to successfully hunt. In addition, if blood ever ran out (whether a mass plague like in Daybreakers occurred or humans whipped themselves + animals out), they can sustain themselves on human food. Hybrids also have the potential to reproduce and pass on their genes to create ~really special vampires (think what SM could have in mind for Renesmee and Jacob’s wolf/vampire/human babies with magical powers, considering both of their gifted lineages).

Because of this, I worry that a sort of war could break out between vampires and hybrids. There could be some hybrids that pull a Blade and hunt down vampires (especially because they are naturally going to be more connected to their humanity than vampires).That was probably one of the Volturi’s concerns when they asked about Renesmee’s diet. There could also be some vampires that think hybrids are an abomination and seek to destroy them. Either way- I think it’s going to…cause a lot of problems to say the least.

If you wanted a totally different topic, I think the next large project will be finding a blood substitute just in case. Although I tend to ignore Breaking Dawn as a whole, I do think Aro, as well as the other members, worrying about the technological advances of humans. If a nuclear war broke out, humans and animals could be annihilated. With that, vampires would sink into a slow, but certain insanity. It would be foolish to not begin research on a substitute, or perhaps change a few scientists with an interest in hematology.
