Do you think if the writers intended to make derek and casey endgame would we still have sally and Truman as love interests? And if we still had them do you think they would write sally and Derek's story differently?

Aww, thanks for the ask!!

So, dunno if I fully understand your question here but I'd say Sally is an interesting character, and the fact she's a well done nice-girl-next-door type, I'm very content she made it into the show. Sally is what Casey thinks she is but simply isn't.

(And maybe unpopular opinion, I don't believe Casey and Sally are that alike).

Now, Truman. Truman is the bad boy type Derek thinks he is in his head lol. Derek is too much of a softie for that. And while Truman is not a lovable character by any means, I kind of like all the episodes he is in??? Not because of him specifically--don't get me wrong--I just generally like them.

About the writers' decisions and dasey endgame/the introduction of Sally and Truman, I agree partly with this hilarious fic:

I don’t know if you’ve read all 6 chapters of “The Bet.” Uploader for some reason updates each new chapter with a new listing lol. But I love the idea of them dating on a bet. I like this fic because for once they’re acting like real college students lmao. I also like how Derek specifies that he will watch a romantic comedy with her now because she is his girlfriend. The whole analogy of her being upgraded from stepsister to girlfriend and now having perks. Because I like to imagine that Derek would surprise her by stepping up his behavior when they start dating. Of course he would never totally change the way he acts around her but the idea of him putting in effort to be a good boyfriend.. like some of that stepbro shit ain’t gonna fly now so he’s gotta grow for her and he’s willing to do that. And Casey seeing him transform from Derek the asshole stepbrother to Derek the sometimes charming boyfriend.. *chefs kiss*

It's sooooooo good. I love the idea that the best way for him to get Casey to relax is to annoy her (because it's true), I love how he's still teasing and mocking her, but his actions are so soft; I love how he's not pushing her regarding physical affection (i.e. kisses and more) but he's not still or a pushover either: he brushes his fingers over her skin, he pokes her sides, he offers himself up as a pillow...

And he lets her freakout for so long and then no longer; and that's exactly how I see him: giving her some time but not too much, and knowing almost instinctively where the limits are... Ugh. So so good.

Okay, maybe not everything but Casey was sure that most things had a logical explanation. Even if those things involved a not quite as obnoxious as he used to be but still pretty damn obnoxious step-brother and a slightly trashy, backstabbing cousin. Right? RIGHT?!? (Or the one where Casey and Derek pretend to be dating and end up dating.)

To Get To Know Your Heart - She had a series of ideas and plans on how her life should look like right now. And somehow, she had managed to fuck up every single one of them. Not on her own, though. Or: The Casey McDonald College Experience.

Dasey fic recs from 2008-2010

 I’ve been procrastinating and somehow this led me down the rabbit hole of digging up old Dasey fics. Here’s a short and very random rec list of some of those. (Definitely not exhaustive; this fandom has a disproportionate number of great fics.) I provided AO3 links where they exist because, wow, fanfiction.net is decaying before our eyes.

How Emily Davis Got Her Groove Back by unoriginal_liz (43k, T); read on AO3 or fanfiction.net: "I'm beyond a Shleppette! I'm the uber-Shleppette! There are no depths to which I will not Shlep!"

This is, like, THE fic. It is even better than I remembered. Rereading it in 2021, I laughed and felt all the feelings and was utterly delighted by the whole thing. This should be required reading. Dasey is a background ship but it’s an amazing Dasey subplot. (There seems to be some issue with some missing text in the AO3 version, but it doesn’t really mess up anything but the flow.)

Tapedeck by sparzelli (6.5k, T): She experiences the most curious emotion then. She can feel something slide into place in her head, and then it’s like they’ve been this way their whole lives. It's not real, but it sort of feels like comfort. CxD

I always remember this fic for being a little angsty and having a strong atmosphere. It’s still quite vivid and a different Casey characterization than I often see/write, and the tension threaded through the fic is so good.

The Perils of Alphabetical Seating by TheBucketWoman (3k, T): "They'd agreed to be “friends” which, everyone but Casey knew, didn't mean that they would ever really be at ease with each other." Dasey and featuring, well, someone who used to be with Casey.

This is a Max POV story and it’s really well done. I love how it encapsulates a particular moment and gives such a strong feeling of high school. Dasey through someone else’s eyes is always good, too.

What We Did On Our Summer Vacation by hayseed42 (74.5k, M mostly for language): Nora said their summer trip to the country was going to be an adventure. She didn't mean it quite so literally, but when have Casey and Derek ever been any good at doing what they're told? A slow-building Dasey.

This is a fantasy adventure fic that I’ve never forgotten, but I had to do some digging to find again. It’s just as fun and fast-paced as I remembered, and with great character and ship development. (Content warning for one instance of offensive language referring to disability in Chp. 7.)

A Study in Desire by WhenLightningStrikes / youcallitwinter (1.5k, T); read on AO3 or fanfiction.net: Someone should really look into naming a pathological condition after her. 

One thing I really miss from fandom in the past was these smaller character study-type pieces. This one really achieves a lot in grounding the plot in Casey’s headspace, and the ending strikes the perfect note.

Two Ways It Could Have Happened, One Way It Did by justfallapart (700 words, K+): Two ways Derek Venturi could have met Casey McDonald, and the way he actually did.

Like I just mentioned, I miss these smaller character studies. This one explores the common agreement in this fandom that Derek Venturi fell in love first, and in just 700 words encapsulates all the angst you feel because of that.

back to the border by avocadomoon (4k, T): Casey makes the Dean's list. Derek takes up smoking.

I mean, everyone’s read this fic, right? But it was so definitive for the fandom that a Ye Olde Dasey Fic Recs post (even a short, random, and non-comprehensive one) would be incomplete without it. I still remember reading this for the first time. Each scene is so well-drawn, both perfectly connected to the show and establishing its own universe and tone. It’s efficient and elegant and amazing.

I don't really do recs, tbh, mostly because I've only fallen into the Dasey blackhole in the last year and a half. That being said, if I was looking for Dasey high school/show-verse fics, I would brave the dangerous wasteland that is FanFiction.Net because THAT was the main site for fics when the show was airing. I think if you organized the stories by review or bookmark instead of by date, you may actually find something? Be warned, there IS a lot of ads there now, unfortunately.

Sorry I can't offer more help! If any of my other Dasey followers know of some good Dasey high school recs and want to share/help, uh... This is a call out, I guess?

Only our quiet (well, quiet-ish) nights are honest (well, honest-ish, with the exception of a few words).

The fighting, the arguing, what if it was all an act? It’s fluffy AND smutty. A perfectly blended mix, by the hand of a master. I don’t know this author but I think they’re neat.

“So, basically, you just want to reenact Clueless,” Emmy says flatly, tapping their worksheet once again.

Laurel ignores her tone and waves her hands around excitedly. “We can go shopping this weekend and buy some outfits! Dibs being Dionne since, you know, Black Girl power. You’re white and blonde, so you can totally pull off being Cher.”

“Girls,” Casey warns, aware that the duo hasn’t touched their worksheet for the last ten minutes. “I expect that to be finished by the end of period.”

“Yeah, sure, Ms McDonald,” Laurel replies. She turns towards Emmy and lowers her voice. “I’ll make a discord group chat. Operation Clueless is a go.”

This fic is so many things and it is everything. I’m not recommending it because it was written for me, but I guess that could be one reason I love it so much. It hits ALL the marks. It’s so goooood! Once I started it I could not put it down! The pacing and the humor are otherworldy is how good it is. Derek is at his best here as a scheming devil and, meanwhile, Casey is mostly oblivious to the fact that he is trying to date her. *Chef’s kiss*
