This novel follows one eventful summer in the life of Saffiatou Senghore, known to most as Saffie.

Saffie has been suspended from her first year of her courses at Balliol College, at the University of Oxford, after suffering from a mental breakdown. Full of fear and shame, she has returned to the Islamic Republican Kingdom of Kau'ur. The country is under the brutal dictatorship (or glorious liberation, to hear some tell it) of Mohammedan Bougarabou.

Saffie, secluded in her mother's compound in the capital city of Rakhat, becomes more and more interested in the political world outside of the walls she is confined within. Saffie creates an unexpected, close-knit circle of friends, and together the five teens spend much of the summer reading, bickering, eating, swimming... and plotting to overthrow the government. Can they incite a revolution? Or are they a bunch of teens misreading Machiavelli?

In the middle of this chaos is a country-wide witch-hunt, an officious council of marabouts, a philosophy professor-turned-Head-Witch-hunter, and a brutal and ruthless dictator who is careening into the depths of insanity.
