shanks & buggy, and giving up on your dreams

before my latest reread/catch-up on one piece i had not given the history between buggy and shanks much thought, except to wonder a little how they went from this:

(in the chapter 19 flashback, set a day or so before buggy gets his devil fruit powers; they're at most 12 here.)

to this:

(a single panel flashback in chapter 434 to the day roger was executed; they're 15 here.)

like. what happened in the intervening (three?) years to make shanks think he might get a positive response to this request? and why is he making the request in the first place? he's the one who said they should go their own ways, originally.

six hundred fifty chapters later, we get a… partial answer. but not to shanks' side of the story.

(from the chapter 1082 flashback, of course; this panel is from an unspecified time, but it's beanie buggy so probably closer to 12 than 15)

young buggy (the littlest bug, omg ;~;) sees shanks' potential and gives up on his own dreams (of becoming the pirate king, i assume).

now, is it just that he gave up on his own dreams, or did he make a new dream out of shanks becoming pirate king? that isn't clear… but I think that must be what happened.

because after roger is executed, and shanks tells buggy he's changed his mind about going to laugh tale, buggy's shocked response and rejection feel deeply personal. but he digs up some ancient baggage between them to use as his excuse for leaving, rather than state his true feelings…

which suggests shanks didn't know buggy was so invested in shanks becoming the pirate king.

so. it seems to me. that somehow shanks became aware that buggy's goals had changed. but he did not know why, or what they'd changed to. just that they were now (supposedly) compatible with his own.

at which news I imagine he thought: this is great! now buggy can be part my crew and travel with me while we both go after our goals!

this is just enough of an answer to make me obsessed. i have not been able to stop thinking about 1082 and its implications for weeks.

Here's a thought for you re: Hob's daydream's affecting Dream.

Hob, it seems, is oral fixated today.

Dream's attention is divided between Hob's mundane chatter about his students, the attention he always saves to the Dreaming, and... the firm press against his lips, against his tongue, nearly reaching the back of his throat in it's vulgar audacity.

Hob's words trail at those moments, he sounds distracted and like he doesn't really notice the way his words repeat, his gaze dropping again and again, fist clenching when Dream swallows.

Dream huffs through his nose, very well, he will indulge him, if he must.

Subtly, he flicks his tongue across his lips, glancing just in time to see Hob frozen, words forgotten, staring intensely.

And there it is, the push against his lips, the persistent request to open his lips and take, take, take. wrote it, sent it, didn't look twice, peace

Dream’s jaw almost drops with the immediate response that garners him, not from surprise, but because he feels as if he needs to. 

Hob is hot and huge in his mouth, in his projection, stretching him open and reaching further and further. Hob helping himself to Dream like he’s allowed this– brazen, indecent. Dream swallows again, his amusement veering off course, transforming into something selfish and carnal, something Dream realizes might not work out in his favor.

But he can’t help but tease, just a little. Hoping to catch Hob off-guard and subdue him.

“Something the matter?”

Dream’s voice catches both of them by surprise. It’s low rumble sounding smothered, spoken behind closed lips, or muffled around an over-eager cock, as it were.

Hob looks Dream in the eyes, studying them, perhaps realizing that he’d fallen quiet and was staring at Dream’s lips for a fraction of a second too long, too obvious. Friends don’t look at each other’s lips, don’t stutter over their words, and certainly don’t fantasize– Christ, Dream’s knees hitting the hardwood floor and staring up at Hob, as if in worship, in supplication. 

The utter audacity.

“You seem. Distracted.” Dream is proud of how his words remain steady, even as his knees begin to sting and his mouth throbs.

“Do I?” Hob laughs, a tinge of hysteria rolling off it. He finally forces himself to relax, shaking his head, clearing the illusion. Dream’s entire body slumps forward slightly, like he’d been released from a bond that tied him straight and upright.

In superman #417, an imaginary story is told of what would have happened if Kal's rocket landed on Mars instead of Earth. He gets found by a warrior race of martians who are so impressed with this baby's strength that the leader adopts him as his son. GOD, seeing a Dream Team film adaptation tackle the Dream's Deep sequence would be such a stab to the heart, especially since it would have to also focus on Mario's reactions to Luigi's innermost thoughts

OH GOODNESS. The raw emotion that could be drawn upon from that moment 💗

Here's the thing: the Bros know each other so well. That is the important thing to keep in mind. There is no doubt in my mind that they have seen each other's good and bad sides; held each other through the worst times.

Mario knows that Luigi does have self doubt, lacks some confidence, and is clumsy - but he loves his brother regardless because he knows Luigi wants to work through it, and has so much good in him. The flaws are just a part of what makes Luigi, his other half, his brother.

However, it's one thing to know this about a person, but it's another thing to actually see it.

Dream's Deep is an emotional place for those of us who have witnessed it first-hand; I can only imagine how it would be if they adapted it into movie form:

Mario just taking in everything Luigi is thinking and feeling. His own brother's thoughts swirling around him, everything from his own pep talks to how much he loves Mario.

And Mario can feel everything. He already has a pure spiritual link to his brother...but in Dream's Deep it's like it's all become a part of him. He clasps his hand to his mouth, overwhelmed by everything he is seeing and sensing. His brother is embracing him in his dreams, and Mario just wants nothing more than to finish up as fast as possible so he can hold his brother tight, physically hold him, and never let go.

And after Dream's Deep, while travelling to the next place, Mario catches his brother's eye. Luigi knows how much Dream's Deep affected Mario. What they have both seen and been through there was heavy stuff, and they need to compose themselves and each other.

They stop, and without even saying a word they hug each other so tight, foreheads pressed together. They don't even care who's watching. They need to get this out. They need to tell each other via a loving touch that they are here for each other, no matter what. They're ok. This will never drive them apart. Nothing ever will. ❤️️💚

Luigi knows this hug is mostly for Mario...

It always bothered me that after Dream's Deep, in the game, the Bros never talk about the experience. Not even a hug after....

I love imagining Destiny and Dream interactions because Dream is so stern and prodigious, but Destiny is older and stronger than him and does not give a f*ck lol.

We can learn a lot from Jesus’ example. When we are faced with silence from God, we must trust in His plan. It can be challenging to do so, especially when we are in the midst of difficult circumstances. But we must remember that God’s ways are higher than ours, and He has a plan for our lives.

Another important lesson we can learn from Jesus’ crucifixion is the power of perseverance. Jesus endured great suffering on the cross, but He did not give up. He knew that His death would bring about salvation for all who believe in Him. It was a difficult path, but Jesus was committed to seeing it through. When we face trials and difficulties in our own lives, we must also persevere. We must hold onto our faith and trust that God will see us through. We may not understand why we are going through what we are going through, but we can have faith that God has a plan and that He will be with us every step of the way.
