I just stumbled across another Darcy Has Amnesia and Has Been Living as a Lower Class X and I need to say this:

DARCY WOULD BE IDENTIFED AS RICH BEFORE HE WOKE UP!

First, clothes. In Jane Eyre, despite her tramping through a bog, they knew her clothes are upper/middle class before she woke up. If Darcy is wearing anything he's gentry or merchant class on sight.

So lets say he's naked. People today kind of just look like people, but in the past, no. Lower class men in this era especially would wear their profession on their skin. Fishermen and farm workers would be tanned like crazy, carpenters would have lost bits of finger, blacksmiths burn marks and developed muscles. Do you know that winemaking can stain your hands purple for weeks? Aside from profession, Darcy would look soft to lower class people, but at the same time well fed. The lower classes were struggling with food insecurity during this era or for all time...

And then he wakes up, now I am not sure if they trained provincial accents out of kids in this era, BUT HAVE YOU HEARD DARCY TALK? Jane Austen doesn't have many servants talk, but sound like Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy they do not! He has perfect grammar and a huge vocabulary! He will be known as a clergyman, lawyer, merchant, gentry or even an aristocrat the second he speaks.

So what then? These are poor people, they aren't dumb. They would advertise that they have found a rich injured person and hope for a reward. Darcy would be fairly well known by face and they have artists and newspapers and printing presses. He also would be known to be missing, he has a family, he writes his sister on a regular basis.

I give it a month tops before he's safely back home.

And that's not even getting into the fact that erasing a person's entire memory is basically neurologically impossible...

The wonderful @jennelikejennay has recently written a Spirk adaptation of Pride and Prejudice called ‘Logic and Prejudice’. And although the characters in the fic don’t wear period dress (they’re in Vulcan robes and Starfleet uniforms as you’d expect) it inspired me to recreate the famous picture of Mr Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet with our boys. Don’t they look dashing 😁😂

just finished hesrtstopper s2 and god i have so many thoughts i may or may not vocalize later but i do want to say darcy’s arc hit HARD and it was the first time i had seen a character come even close to my personal experience being queer in that way and she came CLOSE. and having her be accepted and given love with open arms by someone who loves her and her amazing friends is just very sweet. i fucking sobbed. im out at school but can’t tell my parents, im usually masking in a fake personality so much that for a long time i didn’t think i had a real Self or that anyone could really care about me because of it. and while now its a lot better, seeing a character in the exact same place verbalize it so perfectly and be met with all that was fucking lovely and i just needed the world to know.

Fanfic writers of Tumblr, please know that I love you and I want to read your works. But some of y'all make it so damn hard to read your fics!

PLEASE, I AM BEGGING YOU, LINK YOUR CHAPTERS TOGETHER IN SOME WAY!

I can't tell you how many times I've come across the second, third, fourth, or tenth chapter of what I can tell is an amazing fic, only to not be able to read it because I can never freaking find the previous chapters on the writer's blog. YOU HAVE GOT TO LINK YOUR CHAPTERS TOGETHER!!!

There are several ways to do so that will make your fics so much easier for people to read and follow.

1) Create a masterpost A masterpost is one post that you keep updated with links to the newest part of your fic. Most people also usually pin them to the top of their blog so they're easy to find and see if they've been updated recently. They tend to look something like this: An Optional Moodboard/Fic Banner Fic Title Ship(s)/Relationship(s) or Just A List Of Characters Word Count Rating Any Warnings or Tags Summary/Synopsis of Fic Author's Notes Chapter One Chapter Two Chapter Three ect, with each chapter listed having a direct link to said chapter

2) Linking your chapters together The best way I've seen this done looks like one of these: PREVIOUS CHAPTER | CURRENT CHAPTER | NEXT CHAPTER or Chapter One | Chapter Two | Chapter Three You post that at the top of the current chapter with 'previous chapter' linking back to, obviously, the previous chapter, and 'next chapter' linking to, obviously, the next chapter. So if the first post of your fic that I come across is chapter 6, I can then keep clicking on 'previous chapter' until I get to chapter one! Sometimes I've seen writers do both this one and a masterpost and in each chapter, they also link back to the masterpost as well.

3) Using a dedicated & unique tag This is the quickest and simplest way to make it easier to find the other chapters on your blog. Just create a unique tag just for that particular fic and make sure you use it on every part you post.

Also, while I have your attention, I'm also begging some of y'all to use the 'keep reading' function! Because I can't tell you how frustrating and annoying it can be to be searching through a tag only to have that tag clogged up with long walls of fic. So if your fic is going to be more than say, three or four paragraphs, put the rest of it under a 'keep reading'.

To add this to your post (when using the desktop version of Tumblr), you click on this little thing here when you're ready to add it (ignore the Grammarly thing behind mine):

This is what you'll then see and everything you type after that will be under the 'keep reading' link that people will have to click on to expand your post to read the whole thing.

This is what the readers will see on their end. Clicking the blue words will then expand the post so they can read the whole thing.

Doing this when posting fic on there just keeps all of the tags nice and organized! If you'd like more specific examples of any of these, feel free to send me a message and I'll point you in the direction you need!

I really hope I've made it clear that this post comes from a place of love and not hate when it comes to posting fic here on Tumblr. I know there is so much amazing fanfic on here in so many different fandoms and I just want to help make it as easy as possible for people to find it, read it, and share it!

Hello!

I liked your post about Anne de Bourgh probably just being sick, and another question came to my mind with regard to her.

I am quite astonished to see, that in a lot of JAFF, when he can't get Elizabeth, Darcy marries Anne de Bourgh. Usually there is some hidden motivation behind that: for example she is pregnant and he wants to save her reputation, or he wants to give her an opportunity to escape from Lady Catherine (relying on the non-canon assumption, that Anne is suffering under her mother's care) etc. For me it is a big question whether Darcy would marry her under any circumstances, and I am curious to hear your opinion about that. I always love your thoughtful answers!

As a general rule, I think that if Darcy meant to marry Anne de Bourgh, he would have already done it. So no, I don't think he'd marry her.

Anne's age is unclear, but the cradles line implies that she and Darcy are close in age, which is around twenty-eight. That isn't terribly old for Darcy, but it is for Anne if she's expecting to produce some children. I do think Anne being around Darcy's age makes sense, because it makes Lady Catherine more desperate. She's probably been previously thinking to herself, "Darcy is enjoying his youth, lots of time to marry" but now the deadline is feeling near and she's starting to wonder when Darcy will do his duty... (because obviously he's not going to squelch on her, right? RIGHT?)

Often I'll see in JAFF Darcy giving up on love after Elizabeth and marrying Anne out of duty, but that seems out of character to me. There are lots of women out there, I feel like Darcy would just try again. He's only twenty-eight, he can find someone else he loves! I really think that before he met Elizabeth at Pemberley, he was planning on doing just that. He thought it was over.

As for saving Anne from her mother, which I don't think is a real concern, there are other ways to do that if Darcy really thought it was a problem. He could invite Anne for a visit to Pemberley or his house in London. He could talk to his uncle, who would have more standing to talk to his sister about it. But it's unlikely he would see this as his duty or even as something he interfere with. Lady Catherine is Anne's mother, he is the nephew, it's not his place. Those hierarchies were very important in that era.

If Anne were pregnant or something... this one bothers me so much! It's SO OUT OF CHARACTER! Darcy cares about Pemberley, he would not want some random kid as his possible heir! If he has already rejected Anne as a suitable wife, why would he accept her now that she is "ruined"? If he really cares about Anne, he could find her a suitable husband with his money, power, and connections, he doesn't have to marry her himself. And again, this isn't his problem. This is Lady Catherine's responsibility.

(Not to mention how freaking misogynistic it is for JAFF to imply that Lady Catherine is so incompetent that Darcy has to help her run her estate. Women can run their own freaking estates!!!)

So to sum up: No, Darcy would not marry Anne, under any circumstances. Maybe if Lady Catherine kidnapped Georgiana and held her for ransom. (Don't write that, I beg of you)

I haven’t fallen in love with fictional characters and the world that they inhabit the way I have with Victoriocity in YEARS. It genuinely makes me feel like a kid again, the way I got when I was reading Harry Potter for the first time and the universe just was slowly unfolding and I wanted to know everything about it outside of the main storyline. And then you have the pitch perfect humor and characters I AM VERY DEEPLY INVESTED IN that are in the most perfect Victorian slow burn of all time where I KNOW SOMETHING IS GOING TO HAPPEN EVENTUALLY BUT ITS GOING TO TAKE YEARS AND ILL BE HANGING ON TO A DARCY HAND FLEX MOMENT FOR DEAR LIFE UNTIL IT DOES, and you got me hook, line and sinker.

But seriously, it’s well written. It engages in some trope but does so in a way that only good writing can where expectation is subverted and then not that that is surprising and delightful, The pacing is excellent. The world they’ve created is completely original but totally familiar which grounds the characters and the plot.

Anyway, I bought three copies of High Vaultage (audio, ebook and special edition hard copy of course), finished it, binged season three and now I need the link to the kickstarter for the next project because I NEED MORE. This is just going to be a fan account until then.

I have a few questions for Jane Austen fans about one important scene in Pride and Prejudice.

I still remember the post that circulated some time ago about the fact that when Darcy makes his first proposal, he finds Elizabeth alone because she's stayed behind with a headache while the others have gone to Rosings for tea. A stress headache caused by her overwhelming rage at the reveal that it was Darcy who persuaded Bingley not to marry Jane. Which gives her even more reason for responding to his insulting proposal by verbally ripping him to shreds.

I was surprised by how many people responded to that post by saying that they always thought Elizabeth just pretended to have a headache to avoid seeing Darcy at Rosings.

The text doesn't seem ambiguous to me: the omniscient narrator states that Elizabeth had a headache caused by her stress, which combined with her reluctance to see Darcy to make her stay behind:

The agitation and tears which the subject occasioned brought on a headache; and it grew so much worse towards the evening that, added to her unwillingness to see Mr. Darcy, it determined her not to attend her cousins to Rosings, where they were engaged to drink tea

But some people would argue that Austen is just being playful. She often makes sarcastic statements that blatantly aren't true, so maybe the above is just her playful way of stating that Elizabeth faked a headache to avoid seeing Darcy. It doesn't come across that way to me, but then I'm on the autism spectrum and don't always understand subtext either in real life or in fiction.

I already wrote a post asking people how they interpret this passage, but I thought I'd ask it again. Real headache or fake headache?

Then, of course, Darcy arrives. I've been wondering: how do other readers interpret his choice to visit and propose to Elizabeth then and there? Here's the text:

In a hurried manner he immediately began an inquiry after her health, imputing his visit to a wish of hearing that she were better. She answered him with cold civility. He sat down for a few moments, and then getting up walked about the room. Elizabeth was surprised, but said not a word. After a silence of several minutes, he came towards her in an agitated manner, and thus began:—

“In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.”

In the small amount of commentary I've read so far, I've come across three interpretations of Darcy's actions at this point.

(a) The most generous: He visits out of genuine concern for Elizabeth, and upon seeing that she's feeling better, he decides that now is as good a time as any to propose.

(b) Slightly less generous: When he hears that she's alone with a headache, he decides to seize the opportunity to go and propose, using "inquiry after her health" as an excuse.

(c) The least generous: When he hears that she's alone with a headache, since he thinks she knows his interest in her and has been encouraging him, he assumes she must be faking the headache to give him the chance to find her alone and propose.

Unless I'm forgetting some line or other, the last suggestion seems a little bit far-fetched to me – not that he thinks she's been encouraging him, that of course is true, but that he should think she's faking the headache just to make him visit her.

But I could believe either the first or the second interpretation. Does anyone else have any views on the subject?
