"We don’t know a lot. I’m guessing the three men never met in life. Two were buried in the summer of 1915. In February 1916, the third of them died. They might have known each other before they got to Kingston — but since we don’t know where they came from, or when they arrived, there’s no way of knowing. They weren’t the only ones who died in captivity — 20 men succumbed after being confined in Kingston’s Rockwood Asylum for the Criminally Insane, also known as the Rockwood Lunatic Asylum. Eight were misidentified as “Austrians” while the other 12 were Germans. All were branded as “enemy aliens” during Canada’s first national internment operations of 1914-1920. “Dozens” of those deemed “insane,” collected from various asylums across Canada, were among the 2,000 or so “aliens” returned to Europe after the war. The first repatriates sailed in July 1919 aboard the SS Sicilian. The last batch were on the SS Melita, which steamed east from St. John in March 1920. None of them had any choice. They were deported whence they came.

The Rockwood three we know something about were named Dezső Benscura, Walter Grooham and Andreas Moritsky. Whether those are accurate renderings of their names, recorded by immigration officials or jailers who had little knowledge or interest in the languages, nations or faith groups of eastern Europe, I can’t say. As noted on Sept. 30, 1920, in a final report tabled by General Sir William Desmond Otter, the officer in charge of the Office of Internment Operations, 8,579 men along with 81 women and 156 children, were herded into 24 camps behind Canadian barbed wire. Of that number, 106, a majority of them “Austrians,” were deemed “insane” and placed in provincial institutions — at Ponoka, Alta.; Essondale, B.C.; Brandon, Man.; Hamilton, Rockwood, and Mimico, Ont.; St Jean de Dieu, Que.; with three other internees hospitalized in Nova Scotia. Only one man, an “Austrian,” died of “insanity.” What killed the other two at Rockwood is not preserved in the historical record.

Gen. Otter claimed that “great care was observed in having the cause of death established and recorded, the place of burial marked, due regard being paid to the latter ceremony, while the effects of the deceased were cared for and whenever possible their nearest of kin informed.”

Records were kept about some deaths, like the names of the six men killed attempting to escape including the dates on which they were shot. And perhaps the possessions of some of the 107 deceased internees were, somehow, returned to their families. But the three buried in Kingston were laid to rest in unmarked graves, somewhere within the confines of St Mary’s Roman Catholic Cemetery, no one knows exactly where. That they ended up in this burial ground is likely because they were Catholics, as many immigrants from the Austro-Hungarian Empire would have been. Or perhaps it was because their mortal remains were not wanted at the Cataraqui Cemetery, a territory then reserved for this city’s Anglo-Celtic and Protestant elites.

Were they buried close to each other? No one knows. Was a prayer said over each man before he was covered, as Gen. Otter wrote? I hope so. But I doubt that any of their family members or friends left in the “old country” — somewhere in that multinational, multi-confessional, and multilingual Austro-Hungarian Empire that would itself disintegrate at the end of the First World War — would ever find out what happened. These men simply disappeared. Having left their homelands hoping for a better life they never suspected that arriving with an Austro-Hungarian passport would mark them, under the terms of the War Measures Act, as “enemy aliens,” subject to detention and forced labour. Even more galling was that they knew they had done no wrong. They had immigrated legally. They were not criminals. And yet, following the outbreak of the Great War, they found themselves suddenly treated as prisoners-of-war, without just cause. Thousands of Ukrainians and other Europeans suffered various state-sanctioned indignities. The panic about skunk water is so goofy. “The doctors don’t know how to treat this because it’s a dangerous foreign chemical weapon!” Skunk water is yeast, baking soda, and water. The treatment is taking a shower, dude. Thousands of Tel Aviv protestors got skunked. Not a single one had to be hospitalized because it genuinely just makes you smell bad. That’s it.

There’s no confirmation that it was skunk water other than that the two students are Israeli. But if it was… it’s rude but harmless. It’s less dangerous than throwing an egg or tomato at someone. I'm trying to articulate a thought: while a moral reading of a text is necessary and I'd say unavoidable, a judgement of a text cannot begin and end in its value as a didactic piece for teaching morality to the reader (or reinforcing their sense of moral selves).

This doesn't mean people should read books that make apology of things the person finds morally or psychologically repulsive, just because there's some artistic value in them anyways.

But I have seen people for whom reading (and engaging with media in general) becomes a moral race in which their enjoyment of literature must be thoroughly justified by the -often only superficially ascertained- moral value of the themes and lessons of the text, and for whom the things they read are a letter of presentation of the moral principles they spouse.

In other words, instead of the moral principles of the person delineating the framework through which they approach the text, it is a checklist of things the text must explicitly contain in order to be seen as having any worth at all.

Which is a rather sad and superficial way to engage with things.

No! #Does that mean that the whole book is bad because Tolstoy was a bad husband and in general not good to women? (For reference besides Ttlotfk and Tua I have read and quite enjoyed Blacksad, all the Witcher comics, Cyberpunk 2077 Comics, Doom Patrol, modern Venom comics, also quite a bit of shounen manga and I am currently reading Paper Girls so yeah a lot of different stuff lol)

Also since many comic books are hard to get in Czech Republic I would definitely prefer ones that are not divided into issues (or that are but a collected version has been released) and that do not have too many parts, sorryyy

when you're able to earn his trust, you're really the only person he can tolerate without wanting to pick a fight, so you have to keep a close eye on him to make sure he doesn't go crazy again. you convinced the public safety commission to allow him to live on two conditions: 1) he benefit public safety somehow, and 2) he doesn't cause any problems.

you spend your time teaching him how to fight devils, trying to jog more of his memory, and teaching him how to do basic things again. he's intelligent and learns quickly, but you need to reteach him everything again, from how to speak to even remembering to eat.

“GERMAN-BORN SOLDIER GIVEN TWO YEARS,” Barrie Examiner. June 11, 1942. Page 1. --- Had Unlawful Registration Card and Failed to Register as Alien ---- CAME TO CANADA, '29) --- Convicted of unlawfully having in his possesin a registration certificate which was not issued to him, a 30-year-old soldier. Eric Horace Brandt, was given a term of two years in Portsmouth Penitentiary by Magistrate Compton Jeffs yesterday morning, and on a, second charge of failing to register as an alien between December. 1941, and  April of 1942, was given twelve: months to run concurrently.

When apprehended on April 15, he was in A-9, Canadian Armoured Corps (Advanced) Training Centre. (at Camp Borden, under the name of Reuben Schilski.

Constable James N. Clish of the" R.C.M.P. Toronto, detailed to investigate the case, told that he found that Brandt was born in Germany and came with his parents to Canada in 1929. After war broke out he enlisted in the Canadian army while living with his family at Lashtown. Sask.. in February, 1940, but was discharged in June, 1940, on a nominal excuse of being under age. At that time he was suspected of being pro-Nazi.

Witness stated that in November, 1941, he received permission to. move to Vancouver, but turned up later at North Battleford. Sask.. stayed overnight with a friend, Reuben Schilski, took the friend's registration certificate, and enlisted at Lloydminster under that name.

While at Camp Borden he had been in Toronto and registered at the Metropole Hotel as Roy Davis.. His father was believed to be in the German army.

The accused, of slight, build and normal appearance, told in detail his actions since 1927, when he claimed the family came to Canada. To the statutory question regarding church affiliation his reply. was, "My father is a Lutheran." He also told that he had been notified to return to Germany before war broke out with the assurance that after six months' labor camp and two year's army camp, he would be allowed to return to Canada, but he had decided to stay here. He had written asking for a guarantee of return but had received no reply.

To a question of Crown Attorney Frank Hammond, he stated that he had not taken the matter seriously but could easily have gone back to the German army if he had wished.

Mr. Hammond's view of the case was that the background gave it more serious proportions. The young man was not acting foolishly and if he had been doing so we could not afford to take a generous view:

"He is a potential danger," the Crown said.

Magistrate Jeffs thought that the situation looked like a need for internment.

On one hand, I think it's really obvious that Heatherstar and the rest of WindClan were looking to slowly kill tunneling as a practice, an ancient tradition, and I really don't fault him for being angry about it y'know?

Especially the part where ALL THREE of the Mist/Hare litter was made into Moor-runners with the "it's what the parents want" excuse, then the next three were also made into Moor-runners including Tallpaw... I would also call out Heatherstar.

Like, it's not just about Tallpaw. Sandgorse is looking at the extinction of a tradition he is extremely proud of.

The death of a tradition. Because it is being killed on purpose through tunnelers intentionally not being given apprentices.

ON THE OTHER HAND, he absolutely starts getting cold and distant from Tallpaw when he isn't becoming what he wants him to be, and pushes him into training waaay too young. I think the narrative does a good job at making sure you know that Sandgorse is absolutely in the wrong for how he treats his son, and the impact it has on Tallpaw.

It's a conflict I really enjoyed because it's pretty real; and Sandgorse isn't an abusive MONSTER like Rainflower or Lizardstripe. Just unsupportive. I really felt Tallpaw's pain when Sandgorse died in that cave-in, because Sandgorse wasn't an evil stereotype.

I think about that line from Bojack Horseman a lot, the one from the funeral. "It's like Becker!" How losing a shitty parent is like a TV show that you're waiting to get better, and then it ends before it ever does, and now it never will. That's how I feel about Sandgorse.

In an "oh god where am i" scenario, roo'd be a little more on edge. Too many unknown factors. It also depends on Sandro's stats (I'm not quite sure how that works over there) anything that LOOKS high / dangerous and he's staying away. (I'm sure its fine though)

Out of everyone, he'd probably gravitate towards Sandro, Horror or Swap Sans due to how 'familiar' they are. It'd take a little bit longer but he'd eventually treat sans like the normal scenario.

A Canadian minister is implying to the national news service a) that Israel is holding Canadian-linked Palestinians hostage in a war zone, b) that Canada’s foreign policy is dictated by fear of US military allies, c) that the Israeli government with US backing will kill allied residents/connections even for adopting a toothless non-binding motion in accordance with OECD norms.

It’s nothing new to know that the Canadian government is too craven to make a comment on US politicians openly threatening to bomb us as at a New York Democratic event earlier this year. It is also nothing new to see that Israel uses its murder campaigns to threaten foreign nationals or foreign-connected nationals to influence international policy, as seen in the delay in releasing Brazilian and South African citizens from Palestine.

What is bizarre is to see the Canadian government say that Canada believes wholeheartedly in supporting Israel not because of any conviction but because we are certain that Biden and the US will initiate or arm retaliation against Canadians’ families for our independent policy movements.

The key and only important power dynamic in this situation is the genocide of Palestinians by the colonizer states US and Israel. One weird sideshow is that the US is taking this opportunity to exercise its de facto colonial possession of fellow colonial power Canada. The events aren’t unusual. The semi-half-open-mostly-implied discussion of it is.
