12, 15 and 25 for Vanica, Dante and Zenon :D
HELLL YEAHHHHH THE BITCHES LETS GOOO. HI CY :DDD
12. What's a Headcanon you have for this character?
Dante: He can't cook for SHIT. like as much as I love him (which is more then I will ever openly admit) bro can't make a sandwich or boil and egg so Vanica runs him out the kitchen with a wooden spoon. Also he can't drink. Homie is a lightweight and he hates that so much
Zenon: He really likes dancing! Though no one (except Allen) knows about it. Not even Vani and Dante. Plus he has a REALLY big sweet tooth, if their is a box of sweets in his field of vision he will leave nothing for the rest the siblings (this annoys Dante beyond belief )
Vanica: She is (somehow) a really great cook! She kicked Lucius out of cooking duty a month after she learned the basics. Dante has made the "Haha, your a woman and you cook" joke only once in his whole life because Vanica put rat poison in his food and uhhh it wasn't a nice experience. And she can sing too! Most of the time she acts like she can't just to annoy ppl
15. What's your favorite ship with this character? ( Doesn't matter if it's canon or not)
Dante: OHHHHHH BOYYYY UHHH. Sweet rat man, I love you (regrettably) but your ass is so fucking bitchless. The closest thing he has to a relationship is the fact that he is fuckbuddys with Lucifero, I won't count Yami x Dante as a ship bc it's literally just rat man being a weird ass mother fucker and getting his ass beat which is funny as shit. However I will say he is pansexual and he will get into a relationship with literally anything and anyone.
Zenon: There is only one correct answer. Allen x Zenon for LIFE. Because come on BC fandom that man is not attached to Wemon in any way, only thing he feels for them is fear bc of Vanica and his Mom. But moving on they are soulmate-coded and I will die on that, Golden retriever bf and Black cat bf
Vanica: Listen, all of Vanica ships are fucking soulmate coded ok??? (I'm dilulu shut UP) and I love them with my heart (except Vanica x Acier, not soulmate-coded but annoying cat x Tired mother of 4). I have three I would die for bc I am insane. 1) Vanica x Megicula and Vanica x Lolopechka really they give off SUCH old married couple energy I wanna DIE. 2) Vanica x Lolo x Gajah, it's the "We can fix her" mentality AND THEY SECSIDED THE MOTHER FUCKERS. They are very funny and funky but not everyone's cup of tea but it's ok.
25. What was your first impression of this character? How about now?
Dante: My first impression was "OHHHH, he looks cool! (I also like the beard shot me) wonder what he can do" and now it's "Cring ass motherfucker pls stop being weird for the love of god (affectionately, I'm afraid), can you not have beef with an 18 year old?". Can you tell that I like him but wanna throw him of a clif?
Zenon: First impression "Emo boy, with a sad backstory incoming" I didn't care about bonehead at the start, I thought he had BANING magic but beyond that meh. And now "UHHH BABY BOY LIL WET CAT MAN BONE ASS IDIOT. can someone get this mans husband pls?" now I put him in my pocket and take him as far for house Zogratis as I can
Vanica: First impression "WEEEEEEE WEMON, IF HOT WHY EVIL???" I was uhh it was love at first sight honestly, same with Lolopechka so now I call them BOTH baby girls. Now "Oh baby- I would feel bad for what I put you through BUT I DONT SUFFER, then I wack her with the angst stick in almost all my Aus" really can you get more baby girl then Vanica? ( yes you can but SHUT up) she is both insane and has her mental health hanging on a thread, she really needs some tits to lean on and a tea to drink.
Thank you for the asks Cr!!
Asks for this are always open for any fandom I'm in!!

Album Review: 'This is Why' - Paramore
Tumblr media
The disco! is dead. Fall Out Boy are... whatever the hell Fall Out Boy are these days. But Paramore continues to endure.
Influencing everyone from Soccer Mommy to Lil Uzi Vert to Billie Eilish to WILLOW to Olivia Rodrigo (who famously gave writing credits to Hayley Williams and ex-guitarist Josh Farro on her hit single, ‘good 4 u’). 16 years later, ‘Misery Business’ will still get the room pumping. Paramore has almost single-handedly upended the emo/pop punk landscape.
Interestingly, though, the band hasn’t dabbled much in emo or pop punk since the release of 2017’s After Laughter, an emotionally fraught record filled with jangling New Wave and day-glo synths. You can trace their pop pivot back even further with tracks like ‘Ain’t It Fun’ and ‘Still Into You’ from their 2013 self-titled album.
So it’s only natural for the Tennessee trio to make yet another sonic shift on their latest album, this time in the form of post-punk and 2000s indie sleaze. Born out of post-lockdown malaise, This is Why is a record of two halves: the first half spiky and angular, powered by jittery sort of energy; the second half subdued and rather longing.
The title track restlessly twists and turns like a snake in the desert heat until it explodes into a leery dance-punk chorus, Williams’ fierce demands coming off like seductive taunts. ‘The News’ is menacing and kinetic, echoing the all-consuming anxiety we feel at the 24-hour news cycle. ‘C’est Comme Ça’ has a snarky na-na-na-like energy that proves infectious, as divisive as it was upon release.
‘Running Out of Time’ turns perpetual lateness into a funky 80s bop, Williams asking ‘What if I'm just a selfish prick? On highlight ‘You First’ she’s both ' the killer and the final girl,’ recalling the brooding and intense nature of Petals for Armor.
Williams spends a lot of This is Why beating herself up: For not caring enough, for caring too much, for not owning up to her feelings, for wanting to relive more carefree times. She craves nostalgia; she scolds herself for attracting ‘broken people.’ She seemingly envies the ‘smooth operator in a shit-stained suit,’ the man who can pick up where he left off with no real consequences after causing a scandal. On ‘Liar,’ she struggles to admit her feelings to bandmate Taylor York. Even on ‘C’est Comme Ça,’ she finds adulthood a bore, wryly telling the listener that ‘it’s my dependence on the friction that really hinders my progression.’
Her sentiments are nothing new, her mixed feelings towards Paramore’s biggest hit probably the best example of this. Four years on, the singer still feels compelled to justify her more enlightened position on ‘Misery Business,’ even when no one asked.
I’m inclined to agree with Spectrum Pulse, that it’s much more interesting to examine its ‘ugly emotional truth’ rather than try to distance yourself from it, especially from a feminist perspective. You don’t see Avril disowning ‘Girlfriend,’ not too dissimilar to ‘Misery Business’ in terms of romantic angst.
Coming in at a tight 36 minutes, many have called This is Why Paramore’s most mature album yet and praised the band for supposedly growing out of their bratty punk phase, as if they only became jaded elder millennials just recently. But that’s kinda selling the trio short: They’ve always had a knack for sonic reinvention and have long possessed a maturity and jadedness beyond their years, culminating in their magnum opus, After Laughter, which almost saw them break up. For every snarky pop punk anthem like ‘Misery Business,’ there’s a ‘Brick by Boring Brick’ or ‘Hard Times.’
Though the record is not without its flaws. The post-punk influence is rather overstated and doesn’t really go beyond a handful of tracks. It also feels thematically scattered, placing personal introspection alongside rather vague and sometimes dated political statements.
What else is there to say about pandemic-era politics that hasn’t already been said? How can William be so shocked and horrified at the stream of bad news that’s plagued us these past few years, then just... turn off the TV? Even this refrain from ‘The News’ – ‘Exploitative, performative, rhetorical… deplorable’ – feels like a bunch of buzzwords ripped straight from Twitter or the Tumblr blog of some smug teenage know-it-all circa 2014, crammed between a bunch of Sherlock and Supernatural gifs. For someone who’s been so politically vocal in recent years, who bared her soul so brilliantly on her solo work, Williams is oddly restrained on This is Why.
Sonically, though, the album is pristine, delivering pop punk nostalgia and sleek rock grooves in equal measure. Notable mentions go to York’s indie stylings on ‘You First,’ Williams’ lush harmonies on ‘Liar’ and Zac Farro’s punchy drumwork on ‘Running Out of Time.’
While After Laughter saw a band on the verge of collapse, This is Why sees Paramore triumphantly bounce back. It might lack the sardonic wit and righteous fury of After Laughter or even Paramore, but it does remind us just how beautifully chaotic this band can truly be…

(Possibly) rude thoughts on finalists
Cyprus - Satanists automatically get a pass from me. also neighbours
Albania - Good voice, probably best solo female vocals
Israel - In light of the "current situation", submitting a song called "Set me free" might not have been the best choice. shes adorable tho no shade to her personally
Belgium - Don't even remember the song tbh
Russia - Not a big fan of one-the-nose empowerment pieces but BORYUTSYA BORYUTSYA bit does make me feel like a strong, independent, slav woman
Malta - Same problem with Russia, very catchy chorus tho, very 2010s
Portugal - Ya kno what. I love it. No I will not elaborate
Serbia - I am not immune to legs
United Kingdom - It's ok. Which is like the greatest compliment anyone can give to UK's entries
Greece - They had dancing pants guys-- dancing pants. Very generic song, saved by ace rights
Switzerland - In this case knowing a bit of french actually worked against me because I have no idea what he's singing about and I'm not sure if I'm missing the message or if it's just random verses mushed together to give off the illusion of depth. Good voice, good performance, not too bad for a ballad. Still wish there weren't any.
Iceland - How does it keep getting better? This is all want from Eurovision. Just. *chefs kiss* those funky lil dudes get me
Spain - Moon's not gonna save you
Moldova - Better hope Kirkorov's pockets don't run dry until finals
Germany - Finally, a proper song to cringe to
Finland - 🤘😩 crowd chanting during the results got me very... emo. At least the general public has some taste
Bulgaria - I love her lack of energy! go girl! give us nothing!
Lithuania - YEA BOI This song is what Eurovision's all about. This right there. More of this.
Ukraine - I know the word zelenina in czech and I am convinced that she's singing about vegetables. Great song, too good for Eurovision and probably won't be appreciated. This is my jam, seriously, ive been listening on repeat and now I feel strong enough to eat my vegetables
France - Name dropping Jacques Brel and Charles Aznavour as inspiration is... cute. It's a nice song and she's a very french looking lass. That's all I can say, I'm not too fond of classical french without the element of nostalgia and I can't say it made me feel nostalgic
Azerbaijan - As a turk I am not allowed to say anything bad. I never thought I'd see a day people dance halay(idk what its called in eng, that circle thing they did) in a sexual way, that's for sure
Norway - If only this song came out 10 years ago at the high of Supernatural craze. I just love how cheesy it is
Netherlands - Not one of the bests but it's good. I have nothing bad to say about it
Italy - This has me feeling some type of way. Not only thirst but I always loved glam rock and I am brought to tears at seeing Maneskin do it so much justice. They deserve to win. My man's out there tiddies out in leather overalls he needs a win
Sweden - As a generic pop song it's quality is top notch like if a pop song's to win I wouldn't mind it be swedes
San Marino - Very catchy, I'm vibin in my apple bottom jeans and boots with fur. I don't care that they snatched an Americain, it's a good song with or without Mister Rida. Not exactly what I want from Eurovision but on the basis of quality it gets a shining B from me

Heya Quinn! What’s your full opinion on that new season of TUA?
oh my GOD i love it SO MUCH (spoilers ahead)
luther has none of my respect at all. fucking hate him. he nearly killed vanya at the beginning of the season???? and then tried to find his ex girlfriend / sister who was already married and cried to her husband about it?????? he’s just. ew.
onto diego! he was fun this season, i will admit that he’s a lil hot with a beard but also he just. the fact that david castañeda couldn’t stop laughing during the elevator scene just makes me appreciate him so much. also “hell yeah! i made that machine my bitch!” was my favorite line of his
allison is an absolute hero, she did so good this season!!! i just love her so much, and i’m glad she stood up for what she knew was right and also got married which was dope!! ray is much better than apeman :) (which by the way when she explained everything about 2019 to him he went “we have a black president?” which fits his character perfectly but he doesn’t even REACT to the whole umbrella academy dhfkfj he’s just like “i can excuse superpowered children but a black president, man....” but yeah i love ray anyway) yeah she’s just super amazing and i appreciate her
KLAUS!! he is my favorite i can’t explain how much i love him! i feel like he was just used for cheap puns this season, they could’ve elaborated more on him being able to physically interact with ben or the whole possession aspect but it was just used for a crappy v*mit joke that sent my anxiety through the roof which was Not Funky!  anyway i loved that everyone was like “haha klaus would start a cult” and gerard way went “i hear you” but also the whole plot line with dave was so sad and i feel terrible for him. ALSO! i hope in a possible season 3 they elaborate more on how he’s dealing with ben being gone. he’s had ben with him all his life, so he never really had to say goodbye like the others did, but now ben is gone forever and i really hope klaus is okay :(
five is a badass as usual, the episode where he meets up with his old-bodied self was truly iconic and gave us the classic line of “I’M THE DADDY HERE!” so we love that, but it really was a good episode besides that and his character was once again really important to the plot and all that! good lad!
ben......... i miss this man :( his scene with vanya made me absolutely bawl, he’s so sweet and was truly an amazing sibling to her and klaus. even if they fought sometimes, him and klaus were each other’s friends. however. i do think that his scene with vanya needed to be done with vanya, not klaus. him and klaus weren’t really able to get deep into their feelings with each other, but vanya and him were both the kinda ignored siblings, so to speak, with ben being dead and vanya being literally ignored, so i think their scene together was more meaningful and emotional than it would’ve been otherwise. anyway i can’t WAIT to see emo ben in the sparrow academy that FUCKED ME UP dgfjfh
VANYA I LOVE HER,,,,,,, im so glad that she was finally happy this season she deserved it!!! her and sissy were absolutely perfect together and i’m so glad that she was able to help harlan in any way she could. plus like. saving him from death kinda helps dgfjhf but anyway she just. she’s so great bro. i don’t know what to say about her ngl,,,,,, one of my three favorite characters (the others being klaus and allison!)
so there’s a separate paragraph for the scene with klaus, allison, and vanya all together because that was my absolute favorite scene ever. i’m so glad we got to see them bonding and just. acting like actual siblings!! they weren’t worrying about saving the world, just vibing together!! i loved that klaus called allison OUT with that whole “if you have to say technically you’re already not doing great” and the dancing scene was so sweet,,,,,, there was one moment where vanya jumps up and down before she hugs allison and klaus and it’s just so SWEET because technically (due to the time travel thing that happened) she’s the youngest sibling and just...... i have so many feelings dude
anyway thank you for letting me infodump!!!!!!!!

Top 25 songs of 2020: Honorable mentions
2020 was not a good year in many respects. But despite the world collapsing around us, there was a shocking amount of great new music.
Some of 2020′s best songs were a good fit for this terrifying year — we’ll get to those ones much, much later in the countdown. But 2020 also gave us gorgeous folk ballads, euphoric dance music and infectiously fun pop and hip-hop that had nothing to do with COVID-19 or any other awful aspects of the year.
Before we get to the proper list, here are 15 nearly-as-good songs that juuuust missed the cut, listed in alphabetical order by the artist’s name.
Tumblr media
“Shimmy” by Aminé
Oregon’s most prominent rapper — okay, fine, Oregon’s only prominent rapper — came out of the gates blazing this year with “Shimmy.”
Aminé may have heavily sampled Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s classic “Shimmy Shimmy Ya” on his second album’s leadoff single, but he replaces ODB’s chaotic vibes with a cold, snarling precision. He almost evokes Pusha T in his gleeful takedown of his rivals over the ice-cold beat. Pair this banger with one of the year’s best music videos, and there’s no doubt it would sneak onto this list.
Tumblr media
“Dakiti” by Bad Bunny and Jhay Cortez
I am all about this nocturnal, new wave-y style of reggaeton. The melody is catchy as hell, yet the production has a sinister, chilly vibe that wouldn’t sound out of place on an Italians Do It Better complication.
Megastar Bad Bunny’s husky vocals and Jhay Cortez’s more nasally voice make for a fun contrast as they trade verses. It’s a winning and charismatic combination!
Tumblr media
“Boomer” by Bartees Strange
When you hear the phrase “rap-rock,” you’re likely shuddering at the thought of Limp Bizkit. But that style can work, as promising new artist Bartees Strange — stage name of D.C. alt-rocker Bartees Leon Cox — proves on “Boomer.”
Cox spices up a solid mall-punk banger with some rap verses. And unlike the Fred Dursts of the world, he can actually, you know, rap.
But it’s the song’s explosive chorus, where Cox unleashes his howling vocals over charging guitars, where “Boomer” goes from an interesting song to a great one. If there’s any justice, he’ll be rising up the indie ranks very soon.
Tumblr media
“Kyoto” by Phoebe Bridgers
I think I might be the only music nerd who didn’t adore Phoebe Bridgers’ new album, Punisher. For me, her mix of hushed, mostly-sincere singer-songwriter ballads with snarky lyrics just came off as tonally awkward. Her quips about Scientology and outlet malls in otherwise-sad ballads left a sour note for me.
But Bridgers’ unique songwriting style shines most on the few uptempo songs on Punisher, particularly “Kyoto.” Her goofy non sequiturs fit much better in a driving, anthemic song. And I’m immediately primed to enjoy any tune with a strong resemblance to Sufjan Stevens’ “Chicago.”
Tumblr media
“Dynamite” by BTS
I’m not sure what it says about me that I didn’t learn to love BTS, the insanely-beloved South Korean boy band, until they finally recorded a song in English.
It’s not that I dislike their earlier, Korean-language stuff — “Boy With Luv” in particular is a banger. And BTS’ English-language lyrics on “Dynamite” don’t really have any meaning (they’re basically just a bunch of random catchphrases jammed together ... but they do sound good).
But there’s something immediate and pristine about “Dynamite” that makes it impossible to not adore. It’s a little too cleanly produced to be on the level of the Bruno Mars hits BTS were clearly aping, but the sense of fun is infectious. At the very least, it’s on equal footing with Taio Cruz’s classic of the same name.
Tumblr media
“Comeback” by Carly Rae Jepsen feat. Bleachers
Carly Rae Jepsen can knock out wistful synthpop nuggets like this in her sleep. So can Jack Antonoff, who produced the track and provides some backing vocals.
But just because this isn’t anything new for the duo doesn’t mean the winning formula’s gone stale. “Comeback” is a worthy addition to both of their catalogues.
Tumblr media
“Hollywood” by Car Seat Headrest
I can’t, in good conscience, put this song in the top 25. It’s an intentionally abrasive misfire from the Seattle indie rockers, who’ve done much better. Complaining about the vapidness and sleaziness of Hollywood is an overplayed topic, and letting side members of the band rap some of the verses (in goofy voices, no less) was maybe not the best call.
...but at the same time, there’s something to this objectively bad song that I keep returning to. Maybe it’s the embarrassing bluntness of the lyrics. Maybe it’s the forceful guitar riff. Maybe it’s because the aggro, visceral nature of “Hollywood” makes it a perfect workout song. Maybe it’s the goodwill left over from Car Seat Headrest’s last two albums, which were both stone-cold indie rock classics. I’m not sure!
But even though I know it’s not a good enough song to make the proper list, I can’t lie to myself and leave it out of the honorable mentions. It’s a banger in spite of itself.
Tumblr media
“24 Hours” by Georgia
"24 Hours” is the best possible version of a left-of-center synthpop club banger.
What makes it great — the pulsating energy, Georgia’s yearning vocals, the “whoo!” vocal samples — are obvious on immediate listen. But perhaps what makes “24 Hours” worthy of this list is its replay factor. It came out in January, and it still sounds great 11 months later.
Tumblr media
“1985″ by Freddie Gibbs and The Alchemist (song starts at 1:35)
We already knew — thanks to his two collaborative albums with Madlib — that Freddie Gibbs’ gruff flow sounds incredible over dusty samples. So why not team up with another producer who does something similar?
“1985″ is a prime example of knowing one’s strengths. The Alchemist’s production is stunningly gorgeous in his typical style, with a soaring guitar solo and a shuffling, dreamy beat. Gibbs pounces on it with the same ferocious street-life verses he’s been spitting for years. I’m glad to see Gibbs has figured out exactly which production sounds best for him to make Tiger King jokes and tell coke-dealing stories.
Tumblr media
“Say Something” by Kylie Minogue
Aussie icon Kylie Minogue has been at it for 33 years at this point, reminding us every decade or so exactly why she’s stuck around.
“Say Something” is one of those reminder tracks — a burbling, irresistible, futuristic-yet-retro disco banger. The production is stellar, from the clanging guitar riff to the bouncy synth bass, and Minogue has a winking confidence on the track like she’s been doing this for decades (which, of course, she has). It’s exactly what you want out of a bubblegum pop jam.
Tumblr media
“Right Round The Clock” by Sorry
With their very-British boy-girl dueling vocals, new London indie rock outfit Sorry definitely have more of a whiff of The xx. But instead of hyper-minimalist, whispered tunes, “Right Round The Clock” has a thundering, droll swagger that grabs you by the throat when the chorus comes slamming in.
The thumping, piano-based sound of “Clock” has a bit of a jazzy flair, thanks to the flecks of sax that pop in here and there. And Sorry interpolates Tears For Fears’ classic “Mad World” in a gloriously tongue-in-cheek way on the chorus (at the very least, it’s far superior to that awful gloom-and-doom Donnie Darko cover).
Tumblr media
“Brooklyn Bridge To Chorus” by The Strokes
In a year FILLED with improbable comebacks from ‘00s and ‘90s artists (we’ll get some of to them in the top 25!), The Strokes may have been the least likely. The early ‘00s indie rock standard-bearers had been in sharp decline for nearly 15 years before their new album, The New Abnormal, dropped and the group returned to form.
“Brooklyn Bridge To Chorus” is a prime example of The Strokes’ invigorating comeback. It’s a killer new-wave jam that could’ve been been written by The Cars, with its jittery keyboards and impossibly catchy chorus. And of course, The Strokes’ most valuable asset — lead singer Julian Casablancas’ impossibly cool vocals — is here in full force.
It’s not quite Is This It, but “Brooklyn Bridge To Chorus” is still The Strokes’ best song in 14 years.
Tumblr media
“Spotlight” by Jessie Ware
After a career making increasingly dull ballads, “Spotlight,” and Ware’s new What’s Your Pleasure? album, is a refreshing change of pace into sleek dance-pop.
I don’t know if “classy” has ever been used to describe disco, but that’s the best way to describe “Spotlight.” It’s undoubtably a dancefloor filler, with a funky groove and ‘70s string stabs, but there’s also a stateliness to it. It could fit equally well at Studio 54 as it would at a black-tie affair. I credit Ware with that, using her breathy vocals and charisma to strong effect here.

“Lilacs” by Waxahatchee
Any time you can write a song that sounds like an outtake from Tom Petty’s Wildflowers, I’m on board.
That’s a bit of a reductive way to describe “Lilacs” — Katie Crutchfield’s vocals are much more fiery, for starters. But there’s something nostalgic and welcoming about this southern-fried folk-rock song with oblique lyrics and catchy hooks for days.
Tumblr media
“Mood” by 24kGoldn feat. iann dior
Much of this new wave of emo-influenced rap isn’t really my thing. Maybe I’ve grown out of super-angsty and blunt songs about depression? Although I still love Smashing Pumpkins, so maybe that’s not the case. I can’t really answer why I don’t adore Juice WRLD or Lil Peep like so many others seem to.
But “Mood” — an unabashed sell-out, watered-down version of that sound – immediately clicked for me. I know 24kGoldn is trend-riding here, and that this is essentially a wildly shallow pop song. BUT! It’s a really catchy wildly shallow pop song! With bouncy pop-punk production that sounds like trap-ified Blink-182! (okay, it’s much better than that sounds, but you get the point)
I allow myself a guilty pleasure or two on my lists. “Mood” is one of those guilty pleasures this year. As the kids (presumably still?) say, it’s a vibe.

My Favorite Hit Songs of 2019
This year’s crop of popular music was... absolutely bonkers? I mean, this year we had Billie Eilish crash into the mainstream, Lizzo managed to get multiple hits out of songs she released nearly three years ago, the Jonas Brothers made a comeback, and the longest-running #1 hit in Billboard history became a rap/country crossover that got its start on Tik Tok made by a complete nobody and the dad from Hannah Montana. I’m going to admit, this list was pretty hard to put together, as I found it hard to find 10 songs that I genuinely loved that were hits this year. Despite that, the sheer absurdity of this year’s popular music gave me a spark of hope going into the new decade. For this list, I’ll be selecting my favorite songs off of Billboard’s year end Hot 100 songs list. I’m ready to recount this year in music, so...
Tumblr media
10) Sucker by Jonas Brothers I never watched the Jonas Brothers show or listened to their music back when they were big on Disney, so I’ve got no nostalgic investment in them. However, this was a fun comeback to watch play out. This song was pretty dang good for a while, with the funky guitars and the instantly catchy lyrics. It reminded me of “Feel It Still” by Portugal. The Man. Then it got the point where three separate radio stations were playing it at the same time, and now I can barely stand it. I think that after the radio releases this song from its clutches it will warm up on me again though, because I do like it overall.
Tumblr media
9) Better by Khalid The strongest attribute of this song is its ATMOSPHERE. The beat, melody, and vocal delivery all compliment one another perfectly, combining to create a smooth, almost sexy sound that washes over you with ever listen. I also like the Daft-Punk-y vocoded lines that pop in at the end, they’re so unexpected and yet they fit in perfectly. I've always loved Khalid’s vocal timbre, it’s so chill and yet warm at the same time. The only thing I can’t praise about this is the lyrics, because I have no clue what they are. Khalid, bless his sweet soul, cannot enunciate. It’s the same problem I have with Ariana Grande. I love your voice, I want to know what you’re saying!
Tumblr media
8) Trampoline by SHAED Give me the hipster points, because guess who knew about this song before it was cool! I’ve loved SHAED’s music for some time now, so it’s been thrilling to watch this song climb the charts and for them to get the recognition and success that they deserve. While this song isn’t my favorite by them, (that slot would probably be reserved for “Perfume” or “Melt,”) it does showcase the group’s strengths, which are emotive vocals and glossy electronic production. I love the effervescent backing vocals and bubbling keys that pepper this song, it gives the song a floaty feel while still keeping it tense.
Tumblr media
7) Old Town Road by Lil Nas X ft. Billy Ray Cyrus I can’t think of a piece of music in recent memory that has captured the public’s attention so swiftly and so completely, and you know what? Sometimes something gets big because it’s good. This song, despite all the memes and jokes and radio play and oversaturation, never ever got old to me. Every time it comes on, it puts a giant, goofy smile on my face, and I sing along to the whole thing. I want Lil Nas X to stick around, but even if he doesn’t, I want what this song represents, genre blending, trend-bucking, and a sense of fuck-it fun, to stay.
Tumblr media
6) bury a friend by Billie Eilish Out of all the strange hits we had this year, this was the weirdest one to hear on the radio. It doesn’t have a classic structure! It’s about the monster under your bed! It’s got nothing but a shuffle beat, bass, and the sound of dental drill! It just doesn’t belong on the airwaves next to songs like “ME!” or “I Don’t Care.” Despite that, I’m beyond happy that Billie Eilish is bringing a bit of emo weirdness to the mainstream, because if the success of her music, specifically this song, says anything, it’s that pop is heading in a far scarier and more experimental direction. And I’m on board with that.
Tumblr media
5) break up with your girfriend, i’m bored by Ariana Grande The groove on this song is fantastic. The combination of eerie synths, bass, reverbed backing vocals, and rolling snares makes it feel tight and controlled, but also loose and flowing at the same time. There was a lot of pushback against this song due the sentiment of the lyrics, but it’s not like Ariana is unaware that she’s the bad guy in this position. There’s enough indifference and sarcasm in her delivery to show that she’s self aware. This was probably my favorite out of the hit singles from the thank u, next era, (”thank u, next” is great but got a bit old to me, and I don’t care for “7 Rings.”)
Tumblr media
4) Circles by Post Malone  This is embarrassing to admit, because I rarely, if ever, enjoyed any music Post Malone has put out in the past. But this song just hits different. The instrumental feels more acoustic-driven and has a nice pulse to it, projecting a warmth and comfort that none of his other songs have. This was a perfect hit for Autumn, being chill and relaxing enough for Summer, but the underlying bass groove makes you want to move into the productive patterns of the school year. If Post Malone made more music like this I’d reckon I’d enjoy his music quite a bit.
Tumblr media
3) Dancing With A Stranger by Sam Smith ft. Normani Sometimes radio filler turns out to be spectacular. The ambiance this track builds is relaxing but in an otherworldly kind of way, forming a soundscape of echoing drums and whispering synths. I’ve always stood by the opinion that Sam Smith sounds really good with an electronic beat under them, it helps their great voice move in a more free-flowing way. Normani also sounds amazing on this song, her vocals dipping into smokier territory, and when the two sing together they play off one another’s performances with ease.
Tumblr media
2) Sweet But Psycho by Ava Max Who predicted this in their last year’s hit song’s list? This bitch! I was so happy to see this hit the U.S. charts, you have no idea. It was such a breath of fresh air in that it was so splashy, sugar-sweet, and unabashedly pop. The lyrics are some of the silliest of the whole year, (”she’s poison but tasty” makes me chuckle every time,) but it doesn’t matter. The addictive melodies and the earnestness in Ava Max’s performance make them sound like Shakespearean poetry, or at least like she believes that they’re Shakespearean poetry.
Tumblr media
Should Have Been Hits
Cruel Summer by Taylor Swift This should’ve been a single. I get why Taylor chose the singles she did, but this was primed to be a Summer smash, with the glossy synths and vocoded backing vocals and soaring chorus. We were robbed. Robbed, I tell you!
Graveyard by Halsey While “Without Me” got all the glory, this is my favorite of all the Halsey singles we’ve gotten so far by a wide margin. It’s the only one that I’ve made the conscious choice to listen to on my own time for one. I love the way the production rushes as the chorus hits, and the synths that sparkle throughout the verses, and Halsey’s reserved performance.
3 Nights by Dominic Fike This was a hit in the U.K., and I even heard it on a few alternative stations, so why no cross over? If there was any song that should have been the chill Summer hip hop hit, it should have been this. This song is weirdly addictive, the chorus is so inexplicably catchy that once you hear it one time through you will know all the words to it.
Blame It On Your Love by Charli XCX ft. Lizzo When the mainstream decide that it didn’t need Charli XCX? Because it’s wrong, it needs her very, very badly. The success of “1999″ in the U.K., the name recognition, and the Lizzo feature should’ve been more than enough to boost this onto the charts, but I guess we didn’t want an instantly catchy and fun EDM pop song on the radio. Oh well.
Motivation by Normani Normani and Lauren are my favorite Fifth Harmony members, so I’ve been rooting for their solo careers like nobody’s business. This single in particular had so much potential: a bouncy beat, a stamp of approval from Ariana Grande, and a kick-ass music video filled with impressive choreography. I hope this gets a bigger push into next year, because Normani is a wildly talented performer that deserves success outside of her collaborations.
Guilty Pleasures
bad guy by Billie Eilish This was a good song, just not my favorite off the album, or of the hits, (I prefer ”bury a friend,” obviously, and “when the party’s over,” which made last year’s list.) Still, watching this idiosyncratic little tune become one of the biggest pop smashes of the year was enthralling. Like “bury a friend,” it was so strange to hear this on the radio.
Close To Me by Ellie Goulding ft. Diplo & Swae Lee When a melody gets its claws in me, there’s nothing I can do about it. This is not Ellie Goulding at her best, (I’ll admit that I miss the days of “Lights,”) but the way she delivers the hook on this song is absolutely infectious. I’m not the biggest Swae Lee fan, but he’s fine here too. I never minded when this song came on the radio.
This year was a bit of a roller coaster for me. Needless to say, there were several instances where I felt quite a bit of stress and insecurity, and oftentimes, I would turn to music to make myself feel better. There was one song in particular that a friend of mine, @hasanminajs, introduced me to, that instantly became a beacon of self-appreciation and enjoyment to me throughout the year. And when I tell you that I have never been happier to hear a song on the radio than I have with this one, I'm telling the truth.
Tumblr media
1) Truth Hurts by Lizzo I have never rooted for a song’s success like I have for this one, and watching a hip hop track this bouncy, confident, and enigmatic climb the charts was an absolute joy. There are so many great punchlines in this song, from “why men great till they gotta be great?” to “I don’t play tag bitch, I’ve been it,” to the ever-iconic “I just took a DNA test, turns out, I’m 100% that bitch.” This song raised the standards for lyricism in the mainstream. I want Lizzo to be huge, I want her to be influential, I want her to be one of the biggest pop stars of the next decade if not longer. Everything about this song, from its production to its message to its performance makes me smile. And you know what? Sometimes that’s all that pop music needs to do.
Do you agree with this list? What were your favorite hit songs of 2019? Leave a comment and let me know!

Man i was just thinking again about that idea i had for a cliche gijinka app card game where the gijinkas are all Interesting Bugs instead of weird sexy anime george washington.
I've kinda got quite attatched to my idea for a leech gijinka as a super cuddly white mage who just happens to look emo and scary. And they'd be a great opportunity for nonbinary representation cos in real life leeches don't have binary sexes anyway. But i cant decide between whether i want them to look like a full plague doctor mask thing or a more cliche cutesy nurse but theyre like super tall and look like the monster girl from the ring so they get sad that people always run away before they can help them! So then i was thinking "hey, alternate skins!" Not like in the other games ive played where there's always one canon skin and all the others require hours of grinding and/or real money to buy. But just that there's like three or so randomized versions of the base character with all the same stats but a different costume. Just to spice up the pool of options a bit! Or maybe it could even be more than just the costume and you can get entirely different reinterpretations of that job class? Like the medusa jellyfish could be either a young kid or a grandpa!
Oh and i'm not really sure how to name this or anything? Cos its not really a clear category of animals, its not all insects or all worms or whatever. More like just..all the animals that are unfairly hated but have Cool Biology Facts that i can babble at u to maybe make u like them more. So i dunno.. Pests? Creepy crawlies? Some entirely made up fantasy term for them?
Also i think the setting will definately be jrpg fantasy! Just a world where all these critters are actually funky people on a comedically bad D&D quest. I wonder who the villains could be tho? Maybe theyre gijinkas of more commonly loved cute animals? Or like.. Not gijinkas but monsterfied versions? Hilariously over the top evil fluffums! hamsters are this setting's dragons! And i dunno maybe the ultimate dark lord is a dog with a cat for a royal vizier or something, cos theyre the kings of popularity.
This could also make it actually make sense why the Clione character could be a beserker like in real life! Cos theyre the most un-hated rare sea slug for looking cute, but their actual personality is big scary predator. But in this universe being seen as cute by humans = evil, so the Clione's fighty doom personality would make perfect sense! Im not sure if i should make them like a tormented Shadow esque antihero or a paladin-looking knight who has a dark streak or maybe even a viking? Cos in videogames theyre like the epitome of 'loves fighting but is still a nice hugs guy'. And it'd be neat to have a chubby buff clione instead of the more cliche bishie gijinka. But then i mean theyre literally nicknamed 'sea angels' or 'sea fairies' depending on country so yeah? Oh or maybe that could mean i make them an elf or an angel but theyre still mega buff! Viking guy with lil chibi wings and halo!
Also randomly i think that Slug will be the other nonbinary character along with Leech. Cos well there's a lot of bugs who dont fit the human gender binary but i'd probably be a bit too obnoxious if i had like 90% enbies and noone else. I always think about like 'if this is my first game project i need to go at a small and reasonable pace with all the Big LGBT Feels', yknow? But then every idea i do is always my first game project cos ive never completed any of them yet XD
Anyway i think Slug would be a more fashionable bishie kind of androgenous character, while Leech is a relateable cuddly socially awkward one who wears a mask. But definately also looks stylish in their own way, and i'm sure Slug is always complimenting them and trying to bolster their spirits! Aside from being super fashionable i also think maybe Slug would be a wandering bard? Cos somehow slow animal -> lazy human -> free spirited instead to be less cliche -> bard. Also the whole 'bard rolls to seduce every boss' meme, lol! So Slug is a very nyeheheh tricksy flirty adventuring song person who aint take nobody's shit. Instead of being sleepy they sleep on the concept of low self confidence! Full and powerful pride at all times!!! Goal in life is to be beautiful AF and handsome AF and make everyone swoon at your feet and also recite an epic poetry so cool that your enemies straight up die from the sick burn. Tho i mean i don't think anyone could actually ACHIEVE that, lol! It might be obnoxious if i actually have a character who's basically 'enby people are literally perfect in all ways'. So i just think Slug is a big ol dork who's like the Gaston archetype of the comically overconfident flirt, but like a good and heroic version who actually respects when people say no to their advances. And is also a great BFF to Leech and tries to help them get out of their shell, because well of course Slug is out of theirs XD
Also actually i dunno whether they should all just be named after the animal or have thier own names but the animal is mentioned on their profile as a job class name or something? Cos it might get awkward once we get to more specific obscure bugs with longer names or ones who only really have a scientific genus name. I'd feel like i'd have to make them all wizards cos their names sound like spells! Oh MAYBE THEYRE SPELLS!! Like each character could chant their own scientific name when they use their ultimate attack??
Oh and maybe Slug and Leech could be just based on the species in general but have their alternate costumes themed after more specific rare subspecies? Like Slug could have nudibranch themed costumes cos the vibrant colours would fit such an elegant fashioniste~ And leech could just be an opportunity to talk about how there's subspecies of leech that dont drink blood, though this character is based on the ones that do because otherwise they wouldnt really have a unique job class, lol. Maybe their rarest alt costume is a fashionable orange ensemble that symbolizes both Slug taking them out for a night on the town in their finest to feel more comfortabke in their self confidence, and also just the fact there's an orange tropical leech. Its kinda funny cos there isnt such a huge range of different colours for leeches, its mostly just different barely visible patterns and a spectrum from greenish brown to brownish black, lol. And then suddenly a bunch of wildly different red and orange ones! And nothing in between! Really does seem like a surprise makeover from your bestie, yknow?
Oh and then when i was thinking about other potential relationships between different magic bug people, i thought of Daddy Longlegs! Cos thats a name confusingly given to multiple bugs of wildly different species who're all mistaken for spiders when they really arent. And this mythical nonexistant daddy longlegs spider also has the myth of having 'the strongest poison but its fangs are too short to bite you' which is COMPLETE nonsense based on nothibg cos how would it even survive in the wild if it cant hunt? But its a real cool myth so it could be an awesome excuse to make them have a move that gambles on either an instant kill or a self debuff. ALSO THEY ARE MARRIED
I was thinking they could be a duo of fabulous zorro-looking assassin dudes who were sent to assassinate each other but instead fell in love and quit the business for good. Like 'you made me want to live again, and the only reason i threw my life away on this job was cos i wanted to die'. And to atone for all the bad mercenary stuff theyd done in the past, now theyre robin hood esque mercenaries who take jobs with world-saving hero groups like our protagonists. And they work for free as long as the cause is just! And they wish they could settle down someday and dream about having children of their own, but they feel like they dont deserve it after all that theyve done. They'd be a rare goofy bugmans that actually have a real emotional backstory! So anyway they're fancy fencing guys who're both the same class but maybe slightly different variants with different stat builds or abilities? More specialized and all. Like maybe one is speedy but weaker and one is slower but stronger? Or one relies more on luck based attacks and one is a consistant damage dealer but has a lower max damage cap? Or even one is status effects and one is attack and really even though they have the same job name theyre wildly different interpretations of it. Fitting for the entomology mistake husbands! I want them to be balanced so that they have special bonuses together but are still viable to use separately if your party setup only requires one of them. Also randomly i think their names would be Albedo and Rubedo? I was originally gonna make Rubedo the name of the leech cos i mean alchemy words and plague masks and all. But then it doesnt really SOUND like an alchemy word, it sounds like a fancy handsome dancer name. And then i started thinking about the cute once-sad-now-happy young assassin dads fighting together so well that it looks like one big dance between them, rather than a battle. And i got REAL EMOTIONAL over goddamn bug gijinkas! Man my heart is made of paper and mush!! Oh and maybe they have combo attacks together but also with all of the party members that are younger? Like special dad instinct combo! A built in ability that they automatically shield the kids from enemy attacks. YOU HIRED A MERCENARY BUT YOU RECEIVED A NICE MARRIED COUPLE WHO PROMPTLY ADOPT YOU. Oh and maybe their alternate costumes could just be each other's costumes? Like they'd already be wearing matching red and white versions of the same thing, but then albino dad wears ginger dad's version and vice versa. Or maybe their alt costumes are different complimentary colour pairs like black and gold or blue and pink? And maybe their ultra rare special costume is Big Cute Dorky Argyle Dad Sweaters! It must be capitalized cos it is IMPORTANT!
Oh and then i was also thinking about the idea i had before of bugs with a queen hive structure being like the workers are the common unit and the breeders and queens and such are rarer variants? But the workers are the only ones actually good in a fight, the others are just for collectables sake. Rare but useless, just like how the real queen bee is so big that she cant leave the hive, and never figjts a day in her life unless the kingdom has already fallen. So maybe queen bee is still unlockable as a rare character but she's just a support that makes worker bee stronger? Like you get a lil event of worker's boss coming to honor her with a knighthood for her good service, allowing her to upgrade her job class. Tho i think she still fights with construction work equipment, now its just like a golden jewelled shovel XD

Here’s a playlist that you can play in a variety of settings. These songs are chill, lyrical, funky, jazzy, introspective and nostalgic. Rap deals with a lot of heavy subject matter and a lot of the songs below talks about serious stuff. While I love rap and I love to have fun while I listen to it, it’s important to recognize the black stories being told here. With that being said, I’ve provided a bunch of things to do while listening to each song for a maximized listening experience.

Here Are The Artists Performing At Coachella That Hip-Hop Fans Need To Check Out
Getty Image
Coachella has announced the lineup for its 2019 festival and as usual in recent years, it’s a diverse, eclectic group, running the gamut from underground rap and soul to dance, pop, and psychedelic rock. While its wide-ranging scope makes the festival a perfect format for music discovery, it’s not a “hip-hop” festival and for fans of specific genres like hip-hop, it can be a little difficult to sort out which artists on the roster suit your specific tastes, especially if you’ve never heard of some of these artists before.
Have no fear, though. We’re here to break down the must-see hip-hop artists performing at Coachella this year with a guide to the hottest acts hitting the festival’s many stages, from the newest up-and-comers to the established vets. This list doesn’t cover every hip-hop-related artist (some, like Wiz Khalifa and Kid Cudi, ought to be pretty self-evident). Instead, it focuses on the artists who’ve come — or will come — to dominate the conversation in hip-hop, the ones who will leave you with the greatest sense of FOMO should you miss out on their sets. Some are new, some you may have heard of before, but they’re all guaranteed to put on a show worth seeing.
070 Shake
This 21-year-old singer/rapper hails from North Bergen, New Jersey and is signed to Kanye West’s GOOD Music, which is still a recommendation in itself. She appeared all over the label’s 2018 spate of releases after making her debut with the six-song Glitter EP featuring “Mirrors” in the spring. 070 made her television debut during Kanye’s infamous SNL appearance performing “Ghost Town” alongside him and Kid Cudi. While she doesn’t have much of a catalog at the moment, her highlight track has the relatable title “I Laugh When I’m With Friends But Sad When I’m Alone.”
88Glam
88Glam is a Canadian duo signed to The Weeknd‘s XO Records. The two have fully embraced the glitchy, hazy dynamic their region is best known for, with a yin-and-yang dynamic that makes use of members Derek Wise and 88 Camino’s easygoing chemistry. Just picture Travis Scott, Future, and Nav getting chucked into a blender and turned into a smoothie of sneering one-liners and icy melodies set to the tune of the most lit 8-bit video game theme ever.
Burna Boy
Burna, a Nigerian Afrobeat singer best known for going viral when fans mistook his song “Ye” for Kanye’s album of the same name, caused a bit of controversy after the lineup reveal, fussing that his name appears too small on the flyer and calling himself an “African legend.” While he’s certainly earned the right to call himself that after an extensive grind that made him one of two Afrobeat artists on the flyer (the other being Mr. Eazi), Afrobeat’s relative obscurity to the average American concertgoer means that he’s pretty much honor bound to put on a show that no one forgets and introduce a well-established style to a whole new audience.
Childish Gambino
While Donald Glover is pretty well known by now and made a point of laying his Childish Gambino persona to rest on his last tour, Childish is still set to pop up at a few more festivals this year before (possibly) disappearing forever. After seeing what he can do with an arena show, I feel it’s pretty safe to say his set will silence the few remaining naysayers if it comes close to spectacle and extravagance of his final shows at the LA Forum, opening the door for Donald Glover to become everyone’s favorite singer/rapper for a good, long while.
Gucci Gang
Guwop has likely become best known for a certain generation of trap rap fans as the godfather and one of the originators of the style embraced by many of their favorite rising stars. And just like any good role model, he’s taken a pair of them, Lil Pump and Smokepurpp, under his wing with a moniker that caused some amusement and confusion among music fans who saw the name of Pump’s breakout hit attached to a photo of Atlanta’s reigning royal figure.
JPEGMafia
JPEG is loud, boisterous, and unconventional, a noise rapper from Baltimore, Maryland who mashes up experimental beats with an unusual life story and emotive, soul-baring flows. His album Veteran made a splash in 2018 with its melange of industrial soundscapes and loosely-constructed, cynical bars. He’ll throw a lot of listeners off at first glance much like Vince Staples, with whom he’s going on tour soon, but if you give him a chance, he can surprise you with how much you relate.
Juice WRLD
Juice‘s name should be familiar to pretty much anyone who’s taken a gander at the hip-hop landscape at any point in 2018 after his single “Lucid Dreams” launched him into the mainstream’s consciousness with its conspicuous Sting sample and endearing, dopey love story. Emo teens love him as much as grumpy boom-bap revivalists hate him, which is pretty much a guaranteed formula for success these days. It sure doesn’t hurt that he’s been working like a maniac, pumping out a mixtape, an album, and a collaborative tape with Future in the time it took “Dreams” to finally run its course.
Little Simz
No, that’s not a typo: Simz really does insist that you pronounce the “T’s” in her name, unlike the majority of American “Lil” rappers. Call it the proper British in this English rapper, whose diction extends to her fiery, intricate raps. She’s a bar spitter of the highest order and had the distinction of opening for Gorillaz during their Humanz tour and their Demon Dayz Festival, as well as being praised by Kendrick Lamar. She’s been in album mode throughout the past two years, and with the finished project dropping sometime in the near future, there’s no time like the present to get familiar with this import from across the pond.
Playboi Carti
I made the argument last year that Carti, the 22-year-old genre-less upstart from Atlanta, Georgia, deserved his own musical category after his album Die Lit broke every conventional rule of rap on its way to being a fan favorite. He may not bring much lyrical wizardry to the stage but he makes up for it in raw energy — it’s like trap jazz scatting, with hundred mile-a-minute ad-libs taking the place of limerick rhyme schemes and bass turned up to rib-shattering levels.
Rico Nasty
Speaking of bone-breaking, you’d best guard your grill if you end up in the pit at Rico’s set. Hands, arms, elbows, wigs, and weaves go flying when this brash young lady hits the stage. She doesn’t just rap, she screams her threats on her mixtape Nasty with a shocking blend of aggression and exuberance that resonates with her largely female fan base, sparking the sort of rambunctious reactions usually reserved for swaggering male artists. There’s a reason Rico is at the forefront of a revolution for women in hip-hop.
Smino
Smino had a laugh with the lineup announcement flyer himself, turning every artist name on the list into a version of his own. It’s his off-kilter sense of humor that informs the quirky, soulful raps that glide silkily along his funky beats. From eyebrow-raising metaphors to funkadelic-influenced melodies, Smino’s experimentations with the form are well-worth the price of admission.
SOB x RBE
This Bay Area band was introduced to a wider audience early last year on the soundtrack to Black Panther, but California natives have been rocking out to their post-Hyphy party raps for quite some time. They are as heavily influenced by The Pack as they are E-40, but one thing that always shines through in their energetic delivery is their sense of fun and the invitation to turn up higher than ever.
Tierra Whack
Take away the visual elements of Whack World — you know, the part that has been highlighted in all the praise she’s rightfully garnered — and what you have left is still an impressive collection of one-minute tunes that perfectly broadcast this Philly rapper’s musical breadth and depth despite their brevity. But what you might not expect is how well her performance translates to a big stage. Seeing her at Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival proved to me that she has all the talent and star power to justify the hubbub that surrounded her in 2018 and surpass it in the very near future.
