There is something tragically beautiful about the angle in which the sun is dancing on her skin. He closes his eyes for a lifetime resembling second, but they are still burning, which makes him open them again. He catches a glimpse of his purple sketchbook, that old Nirvana record his dad gave him when he was fourteen and finally, the Robert Herrick poetry book he gave her last September. Last September, when the trees still looked like trees and his life felt like a collection of freshly taken photographs rather than a book that's been read for far too many times. This is his life. Its crucial insignificance resting against his front door. The crucial insignificance of his life and her. Her and the beautiful tragedy of it all.

She's standing there, long fancy dress, mismatched shoes (which is almost surprising), sparkly blazer, a blazer than doesn't quite fit her visually, but compliments her perfectly when you are on friendly terms with memories and unwritten letters and the rationality of madness. It would have been much easier for him to remember her in a way that the poet remembers his muse, with flowers in her hair, sunlight hugging her everlasting presence, a beautiful echo of the past that never existed outside of its paper kingdom. He doesn't remember her like that. He remembers her in the same way that she, now hauntingly, was.

There is this window in his room. It's a decent window, a human creation that is nice and good, unlike many others. And this window was his friend for what appeared to be centuries (in his mind at least, then) and he would get so close to it at times, one might believe he was trying to accomplish something dreadful. But the thing is, he was only trying to get closer to whatever was outside. He was sad, but was he actually sad if he didn't label what he was feeling as sad? It's like a bad joke system. You think the joke is funny and hilarious and you think everyone is going to laugh, but then you it leaves your mouth and it's all wrong and not there.

He doesn't know why she's here when she's supposed to be gone, gone with her life, life that was happening, and his photographs and drawings of rose petals and all these things he was supposed to pretend he had forgotten.

"The sun likes your face." he says, which is like the ultimate "you're my favourite person" decleration in his head, it's just that he doesn't say any of it out loud. She probably knows this. It's a twisted "I love you" at worst, best, but it's them.

Her hand reaches for her shoulder where it finds its solace for a few seconds that happen in slow motion. But not like "this is important, pay attention to this, this is a grandiose moment" movie kind of slow motion. It's more about the incredible irrelevance of the gesture. It's that detail you notice on the twenty first rewatch of your favourite film because that's when you get desperate and crave something more.

He realizes how his eyes are watery when they're already watery enough to cause his cheeks to change colour. His sunglasses are on his head, not on his eyes and he has an excuse to put them down because there's a window in the hallway of the building. He doesn't put them down.

She is saying something, but somebody completely cut off the sound wires in his brain because he cannot hear her even though he can assume what she's saying. He remembers microscopes and how they only focus on one object at the time. He remembers how, an optical microscope, specifically, mastered the art of dancing with light. He is focusing on one thing at the time right now too. She takes a step closer, to him.

For the first time in a capsule full of whenevers, somebody is reaching out for something, somebody, him, too.

yuji itadori - serena van der woodsen. everyone who meets little i will always fall for him. and the need to destroy but also protect y. what kind of charms did little y used to the point that even the special curses had its soul wrapped around y's finger? don't bite off more than what you can chew, i, otherwise that demon in you will be too hard for you or anyone to control.

utahime iori - blair waldorf. queen b. sophisticated, beautiful, regal and poise. but one warrior scar can tell you thousands worth of stories. wasn't she often seen as weak? just because you appear weak to others doesn't mean you really are. beware ladies and gents, you might not know the abilities of the person you see as a lesser individual compared to yourself.

fushiguro megumi - eric van der woodsen. spotted. another lonely boy. now, what do boys from troubled families tend to have? mommy and daddy issues. seems to me that little m still doesn't know the atrocities his daddy dearest committed. but you didn't hear it from me. let the boy find it out with the help of stronger s.

fushiguro toji - bartholomew bass. ruthless, sexy as hell, maybe even hell himself because everything he touches burns. will he have a chance of redemption or will he waste it away like how he sold his soul the moment he decided to throw it into the realms of money, lust and desire? will family be his saviour? or will he leave it again just like he did on the day little m was born?

serenate roommates would’ve been so good especially since they actually liked each other’s company and enjoyed each other which i never rlly got from chuck/nate lol

Okay, I really went all in on this reply, I apologize in advance, but this really inspired me.

First of all, if we're rewriting the show to make serenate roommates, I'm rewriting the show to put them at the NYC colleges they belonged at (NYU for Nate, Parsons for Serena), so they get an apartment together in Soho.

It'd be full of natural light, and plants, and have a little balcony, like this:

They'd have a combo dining room/reading area which horrifies Dan and Blair ("books and food should not be devoured in the same place!"):

Tiny kitchen but it doesn't matter because they never use it anyway (the spices were a gift from Vanessa - bless her but they never even get opened lmao):

For the bathroom, I think they'd do something like this:

Serena's room (the flowers are just spare flowers she picked up off the floor of the nearest florist that they let her have for free):

Meanwhile, Nate's room is alarmingly simple and decorated in that boyish way of where nothing really matches cause he just picked up random pieces he liked from wherever:

They get a golden retriever puppy and there's dog hair everywhere and if it wasn't for weekly maid service, they would never have a clean dish, but it's their home and they love it very much.

Also re: your last point, I'll just leave this: "Nate's only friends with you out of habit."

Under the Mistletoe.

CMO!Taehyung x reader

Genre : fluff

Word count : 1.5k

A/N : this is my first fanfiction here so please be kind. I know it wasn’t anything special, just a cute little fluffy scenario I had in mind. Hope you liked it!!

You want to think that New Year’s Eve was something that you enjoyed celebrating, but that would be a blatant lie. You only attend these parties because… well… there’s free food. And a chance to meet a potential suitor for Valentine’s day.

Maybe you are jumping a little too ahead with that. Valentine’s day? That is too far ahead, maybe you should just think about having someone to make you feel warm during this brutal winter in Seoul. Ah, the snowfall brings back memories of every romantic comedy you have watched in your lifetime of solidarity.

But this year is different, you don’t want to waste time trying to find your knight in shining armour. After watching numerous inspirational videos, you have realised that you don’t need to find love, it will find you. Dressed in a silver slip-on complimenting you curvaceous body, your hair perfectly curled with the help of your roommate, and a dash of scarlet lipstick working as just the right kind of a cherry on top – you knock on your parent’s suburban doorstep to celebrate the end of another wonderful yet complicated year.

“Oh, there is my baby,” your mother embraces you in a warm hug as she opens the door. “Come on in, oh and you’re-“ she checks her Rolex wristwatch, “twenty minutes late.”

“Sorry mum, got stuck in the traffic,” you roll your eyes. Your mother has always been the uptight one, trying to nit-pick every little mistake you make in your life.

“Anyways, I have a present for you today.” She looks quite excited about whatever she has in store for you. “But take off your coat and go greet the other guests first.”

After discarding your overcoat on the coat hanger, you saunter inside and greet familiar faces while trying to hunt home-cooked meals.

“I wouldn’t have that with that,” a deep sound resonates behind your back as you were about to dip a French fry in tomato sauce. You turn around to give a nasty look to whoever was trying to ruin your yummy moment. You felt like your jaw dropped on the floor and slid down to hell as you laid eyes on the most handsome man you had ever seen in your life.

He had dark hair that was parted in the middle, giving his glorious forehead a peek. His eyebrows were thick and perfectly shaped. Could someone even have two exactly resembling eyebrows? You thought as you gaped at him. He had beautiful eyes; was it raven? Or was it a dark brown hidden by the dim lights inside the kitchen. His beautiful full lips quirk up as he notices you staring at him wide-eyed. You weren’t sure why you were so shocked, whether it was due to the interruption or the fact that some living angel (maybe the devil even) was at your disposal clad in a green sweater matched with khaki pants.

A writer perhaps?

“I-“ you pause, unable to form words. “are you talking about my choice of eating fries with ketchup?”

“Yes,” he chuckles. His voice was deeper than the Pacific Ocean, yet it was so soothing to hear. He could be a musician and people would swoon over him in a heartbeat.

“You see ketchup and fries are the perfect combinations, and that’s on period.”

“Absolutely not. It’s like saying Dan and Blair were meant to be. They weren’t,” his eyes glimmer with mischief. “…and that’s on period.”

His teasing made a smile creep up on your lips despite wanting to look offended. His personality was as charming as he looked, perhaps even more. All you could do was want to hear him speak more and more.

“Hmm, Gossip Girl. I like your taste.” You toss a ketchup coated fry in your mouth and look at the handsome stranger mockingly. His grin widens as he watches you munch away the greasy goodness.

“Thank you,” he winks at you. “We are people of taste, aren’t we?”

“C’mon weekends with Gossip Girl and The Politician with a bowl of popcorn? The ambitious little part of me would squeal in joy!”

“Ambitious,” he words in a low tone as if thinking out loud. “I’m Taehyung.”

Your hand meets his extended one in a handshake. His palm was warm as a contrast to your cold ones.

“y/n,” you breathe. “What brings you to my parent’s place?”

“Ah, I work at Mr L/n’s firm. So, you’re the infamous y/n that everybody’s been talking about.”

“What have they been talking about me?”

“Just how beautiful you are.” His eyes catch some light as he tilts his head a little, strands of hair shifting sideways. “They were not wrong.”

Your cheeks turn red and remain so throughout the evening as you two kept conversing. He didn’t miss a chance to drop flirty remarks or to tenderly put his arm across your waist to shift you as people passed by. Turns out you two had a lot more common than you thought, apart from having the polar opposite taste in ketchup and its combinations with other food items. But that shouldn’t be a deal-breaker, right?

As time passes by the time for the countdown neared and the enthusiasm among guests escalates. Your mother enters the kitchen, where you and the handsome stranger, wait, where you and Taehyung stood and drank each other in meanwhile drinking champagne in a fancy flute.

“y/n- oh you’ve met Taehyung,” she looks surprised. “I’ve been meaning to introduce him to you. He’s the CMO of your papa’s company. He is a sweetheart. But I’m sure you know that already. Why don’t you kids come to the main room where we’d do the countdown together.” She pulls you both to the foyer as she gives you a knowing smirk. That woman!

You secretly like what she was doing so you don’t complain.

Taehyung nods as you all assemble in the main room, filled with the clinking sound of glasses and dinnerware. She nudges you both near the fireplace. It was warm and cozy. You look up towards your mum and saw her wink at you.

“Oops, you’re both standing under the mistletoe. You know what to do now.” She giggles like a teenager.

“This isn’t even Christmas maa, why do you have a mistletoe as décor?” You are baffled. Deep inside you knew it was an evil plan arranged by your mother so that you would have to kiss someone at midnight. And that someone is Taehyung.

That was the present she had for you, prepared with golden ribbons – all wrapped up in an exemplary manner.

“I like them,” she crosses her arms and gives you a look. “I don’t know, you two have to follow the tradition or there might be consequences, hmm?” She sing-songs.

You are about to protest but she gives you the last glare and then smiles at Taehyung. She left you both startled as she vanishes in the crowd.

You stand there awkwardly not knowing what to do. Your heart rate increases as you realise what happened. Your mother knitted a plan, a master plan to invite you to a party and to hook you up with someone who works at your father’s firm. Classic mom move, you’d say. You turn towards Taehyung who looks just as flushed. He notices you staring and quickly points at the mistletoe.

“Guess we gotta follow tradition, huh?”

“I guess.” He makes you feel comfortable in a span of only a few seconds.

Your heart was beating as if the god of thunder had possessed you.

Taehyung turns towards you. He places his long and tender fingers on the small of your back. Your faces are warm as the firewood makes discreet crackling sounds amidst the noisy counting of descending numbers in the room. For some reason, your ears cancel out any other sound surrounding you. All you can hear is the crackling of the fire, your brisk breathing followed by Taehyung’s ones resonating through your body. He pulls you closer and closer till you’re close enough to see tiny freckles on his face and nose. You want to caress his soft cheeks, should you? Or will it be too awkward or too straightforward?

He gives you that heart-wrenching smile again and takes a stray lock of hair between his fingers and runs them all the way to the end, tugging it like he’s flying a kite. He looks at you with soft eyes and leans in.

“Happy New New year!!”

His eyelashes elegantly dance as he closes his eyes, yours follow his command and you lean in as you taste each other – under the mistletoe, on New Year.

Maybe you truly don’t need to find love, it will find you.

YOU HAD ME AT NO CHUCK BLENNY AU OMG.... in 1x07 when Blair breaks up with Nate does she go to Jenny in Brooklyn instead? (Let's all pretend Jenny isn't in husdon asking her mom to come home in that moment lol...) Nothing happens that fast but they sit on the couch watching trashy romcoms and Blair leans her head on Jenny's shoulder and says "relief. I feel relief." And that's how it starts...

I meant to respond to this yesterday but I was too tired!! i’m gonna respond now with 2 things though :)

1. part of the enemies to lovers dan/nate au (it’s gonna take a while, but it’ll hopefully hit 40k, like, that is my goal, anyway, getting distracted) - part of that au does have blair going to brooklyn after breaking up with nate, but she’s there to see dan - dan’s nate’s #1 enemy, so she’s like - what better way to spite nate than to sleep with dan!! but things don’t go like that, at all. (this fic is going to have lesbian blair, because i wanted to explore that, and it’s going to be so much fun!! there’s no chair OR dair, don’t @ me)

2. i’ve been thinking about this au for a really long time, sort of inspired by like - serena & eric in the show vs serena & erik in the books, erik being serena’s big brother, etc - you can probably see where this is going. if not: au in which jenny is dan’s big sister. the derena arc doesn’t transpose right with jenny and serena, so it’d be a jenate arc, where nate’s come back after being gone for an year, and jenny’s been dreaming about him for ages. jenny and nate (who are the same age) would date for a bit and it’d be cute, i guess.... but every jenny i write is a lesbian (i can’t rlly imagine myself not writing lesbian jenny) and eventually she would realise that nate isn’t doing much for her. endgame blenny. i ... do not remember how dan’s arc went. i think everything jenny was trying to do, getting one over blair? he was doing the same with chuck. and this works SO well because, you know the whole ‘dan, to serena, i just don’t want her to end up turning into a mini blair’ etc etc? well: jenny to nate - ‘i don’t want dan to grow up into chuck’. like. it works pretty well!! i’m not going to go the dan x chuck route here, though. you already KNOW we’re heading into dan x nate eventually. as it should be. LKSDHLKGFKLFH. why do i keep adding more & more things to my ‘to write’ list!!!!

OH: adding on to say what i should’ve said first. no chuck blenny au with a slowburn like that would be GREAT.

CONCEPT: blair shows up right as jenny is leaving to hudson. jenny takes blair with her to hudson to get her mom back!!! the layers to this!!!!

ron/draco - ooh, very nice. i’d honestly prefer this to drarry cuz there’s more pent-up resentment about what it means to be pureblood. 7/10

jon/sansa - eh, the thing is, i do think this pairing could’ve been very interesting in the hands of someone other than d&d. but GoT has sort of tainted them for me. i don’t like the way either character is handled, separately or together. but george might convince me if he makes them a thing in the books. i think there’s potential, but for now, 4.5/10

andy/april - cuties! they’re a lovely little dysfunctional family. i have to say, april getting pregnant in the end was a big cop-out but if anyone can make child-rearing terrifying, it’s those two. so i guess 7/10 (i’m not giving them more points because my true april OTP is ben/april and i can’t be disloyal. yall know me)

dan/blair - U HAVE GREAT TASTE. 10/10

zuko/katara - oooooh man, this is one of the greats! and the build-up, the progression just !!! 10/10

eleanor/chidi - LORD. the yearning!!! the looks!!! if they hadn’t kissed this season idk what i would’ve done. 9/10 (not 10/10 yet because i want chidi to be the one yearning for eleanor next season. that boy needs to show me he loves her)

jake/rosa - definitely something i would watch/read. 8/10

ned/cersei - ooomggg. so true story, but i think i may have read like half of the ned/cersei fics on ao3. idk why i never talk about this ship but i dig it a lot! there’s just something i love about snotty queen B cersei having to be civil to brooding northern lord whom she considers a peasant. just great. 8/10

gambit/rogue - aaaah, so i’m still waiting for a format where i can get into this ship, because i did not much like them in the x-men cartoons. they just felt…off to me for some reason. but i do like the han/leia vibes. 6/10

steve/bucky - hooo boy. i think this is a combination of fandom fatigue and marvel being Cowards but i am so tired of this ship. i wish ppl didnt put up with shameless queerbaiting. and honestly? for all their angsty background (which DOES make for a compelling story), i feel like the movies short shrifted them big time. they were so scared of Gay Danger that they didn’t let these two characters actually express their emotions properly, so 2/10

eros/psyche - good shit, good shit. not my fave mythological pair but they’re an inspiration for many other ships i ship so, 7/10

It is now time to get to the bottom of the topic of witches - but we are staying away from witches’ bottoms! Once the topic of witches is raised, the cauldron of creepiness starts bubbling out witches all over the place. The Wicked Witch of the West is the archetypical witch, with the long pointy nose, green skin, black clothing, and conical witch hat. There were other Oz witches such as Glinda the Good Witch. Long before Oz, Greek mythology provided Medea and Circe. In Jason and the Argonauts, Medea mainly made potions and then ran off with Jason. Homer’s Odyssey had Circe trapped on an island turning sailors into pigs. The Middle Ages bubbled up Morgan Le Fay in the King Arthur legend. Shakespeare wrote famous plays with witches, such as in Macbeth. Witches were also featured in quite a few fairy tales. The Brothers Grimm’s Hansel and Grettel is perhaps the most famous witchy fairy tale. Mikhail Bulgakov’s The Master and the Margarita includes witches and the Devil galavanting with glee in Russia. Lloyd Alexander’s The Black Cauldron features the three witches of Orwen, Orgoch, and Ordxu who are actually helpful. Fritz Leiber wrote of witches in his novels, Conjure Wife and Our Lady of Darkness. Anne Rice wrote a three-book series, the Lives of the Mayfair Witches. But beyond literature, witches are also bubbling up in film.

I Married a Witch was a 1942 comedy, but 1960’s Black Sunday is horror. 1962’s Burn, Witch, Burn was based on Leiber’s Conjure Wife. Vincent Price hunted witches in The Conqueror Worm, but he was the villain persecuting the innocent. Christopher Lee was voodoo-dolled by his witch daughter in The House That Dripped Blood (see 2018: #1-GREAT HORROR FILM ACTORS). Rosemary’s Baby delivered us a delightfully witchy Ruth Gorden. The Witches of Eastwick had three witches summoning the Devil, Jack Nicholson. The Blair Witch has almost appeared in three films and probably has the greatest name recognition for a witch in popular culture. Sam Raimi’s Drag Me to Hell was about a witch’s curse. Even Marvel superhero films have included the Scarlet Witch (see 2017: #10-SUPERHEROES). Witches bubble up in the cauldron of creepiness beyond film and into television programs.

The Addams Family includes the witches of Grandmama as well as that of Morticia. Lara Parker portrayed the regular witch character, Angelique, in the original Dark Shadows tv series (see 2016: #7-GUIDE TO DARK SHADOWS). A few years later she played a witch in Dark Shadows’ creator, Dan Curtis’ other cult horror tv series, The Night Stalker, in the episode, The Trevi Collection (see 2015: #5-GUIDE TO THE NIGHT STALKER). There was a comedy tv series with witches, Bewitched, including the witches Samantha and Aunt Haggadah. Witches have made appearances in Doctor Who in the episodes, The Daemons and The Shakespeare Code which offers witches Mother Bloodtide and Mother Doomfinger (see 2018: #2-GUIDE TO DOCTOR WHO). The three-season series, Penny Dreadful, centered around the witch Vanessa Ives who was well-played by Eva Green. American Horror Story had an entire season, Coven, about witches and introduced us to such noteworthy witches as Cordelia Foxx and Misty Day; the Roanoke season featured Lady Gaga as the primal witch Scathach. Most recently, Game of Thrones has included the child-sacrificing witch Melisandre, the red priestess, who resurrected Jon Snow. Men can also be witches as seen with Lafayette in the True Blood series. There are even cartoon witches such as Winnie the Witch, Popeye’s watery Sea Hag, and there is Broomhilda from the Chicago Tribune comic strip. They are also in video games such as in the Dark Souls series with Karla the Witch and the fiery half-spider, half-woman, Chaos Witch Quelagg. The cauldron of creepiness overfloweth with a bevy of witches!

What sort of classifications can witches be put into to better understand them? Dungeons & Dragons is a good resource for monster listings and the game includes: Sea Hags, Night Hags, and Annis. There are evil black witches and white good witches, even neutral gray witches. Most witches are alchemists and make potions. Some witches have additional specialization of their magical ability, such as with Circe polymorphing people into pigs. There are solitary witches in comparison to covens of witches. But there are not too many classifications of witches. Desert dwelling witches are certainly not sandwitches, hold the mayo! The term, death hag, is not a classification of witch, but is a type of person who morbidly goes to cemeteries, reads obituaries, and indulges in other death-related past-times. What best distinguishes witches is what they do.

What do witches do? Witches tend to have the same goals and activities in mind. They primarily stand over their large cauldrons cooking up hideous magical stews and potions; in a way, they are pharmacists. The common crazy concoction they cook up consists of children and babies; few witches are vegetarians. Witches are often known to lure children, catch them, cook them, and eat them. Otherwise, they have to go to “witches supermarkets,” cemeteries, and dig up dead children. Witches cannibalistic proclivities primarily exist so they can make themselves younger. Witches are often very old. To make themselves either appear younger or actually physically become younger are their goals. This is seen with the famous illusion of the Young Lady or Old Hag. Witches deeply need to appear young and innocent, and they particularly enjoy the deceit of helping witch finders. In The Blair Witch Project, no physical form of the Witch is ever seen. However, early in the film, an eccentric town local, Mary Brown, is interviewed who very much looks like a witch as well as having interests and educational degrees beyond her age. I have always thought Mary Brown to be the normal human appearance of The Blair Witch. Witches also fly on brooms, often coating the broomstick or themselves wth a greasy oil they make from the fat of cooked children. Witches enjoy staying out late at night, generally doing evil things, and they hang out with the Devil and his minions. Midnight is known as the Witching Hour. Witches often summon up horrible things from beyond as well as have familiars reporting to them, usually in the form of black cats. They cast spells and excel in black magic. Witches often seem to feed off of fear itself, as seen in the Blair Witch films with wooden x-shapes that are left about decorating the forest to terrify the victims (see 2017: #1-THE PSYCHOLOGY OF HORROR).

Which are the most well known, supposedly real, witches? Folk tales do provide us with three well known witches. Baba Yaga comes from Russia, first written about in 1755. She was the typical old grandmotherly witch who created a hut that walked around on large chicken feet. She could be harmful or helpful, but was rumored to have a nasty nose. Black Annis is a witch rumored to live in a cave near Leichestershire, England since the Middle Ages (see 2011: #8-MONSTERS ON THE LOOSE 3). Black Annis is certainly less friendly than Baba Yaga since she is known to use her iron talons to grab children and devour them, later wearing their skins around her waist since she doesn’t shop at Versace. The Witch of Endor is not some witch from a Star Wars film ruling over the moon of the Ewok teddy bear people. The Witch of Endor is from the Book of Samuel from The Bible. She sees spirits rising from the ground and is a helpful and friendly witch…from The Bible?

Which is the most powerful fictional witch? Circe was either the daughter of Helios, the sun god or Hecate, the goddess of witchcraft. That would make her at least half divine, yet she was outwitted by Odysseus. The Graeae are a trio of divine witches from Greek mythology and are related to Medusa (see 2013: #2-MEDUSAS). However, the Graeae are old and share one eye, so they are handicapped. The Graeae is what inspires trios of old witches appearing in fiction such as in Macbeth. The Blair Witch certainly makes the top three since it is said to have killed more than ten people, often in rather groody and gory ways. 2015’s The Blair Witch showed the form of the Blair Witch if you freeze-framed the movie. It was very tall, thin, mostly naked, with stringy black hair and impossibly long arms and legs. Probably the monster form of Mary Brown. The Blair Witch clearly has little helpers or familiars, and it may have illusionary, hallucinatory, and mind altering abilities. It demonstrates an ability of manipulating time unlike any other witch. The Blair Witch may be the most powerful witch we have almost seen. But flying monkeys sure are cool.

In history were there really witches? No. Not at all. Old women who were sick were persecuted, tortured, and killed. It was an issue of people with bad brains contaminated with superstition and steeped in stupidity blaming others for their mishaps. Then those who were insanely religious moved into to glorify themselves while they tortured, oppressed, and killed others. Witch hunting clearly involved oppression of women, the mentally ill, and included the persecution of sexual deviancy. They fueled their witch hunting by believing that witches were going to unleash the Devil and bring about the Apocalypse. Books were written providing instructions on witch hunting, with the most well known book being the Malleus Maleficarum (The Hammer of Witches) from 1486. “Early modern artistic representations of witches articulated and perpetuated beliefs about witch’s bodies, emphasizing their diabolical power and moral weakness. The typical witch was depicted as old, and often naked (to display her sagging breasts, a sign of depleted and supposedly repellent femininity), with flying hair (a code for errant and uncontrolled sexuality). The cauldron—itself a perversion of female domesticity— also connoted a powerful, almost volcanic vagina (The Encyclopedia of Witches, p 132).”

What are the best witch films to watch for Halloween? The most recent critically successful film release was 2015’s realistic, The Witch. Rob Zombie’s The Lords of Salem is quite good. The Masters of Horror tv series episode, The Dream in the Witchhouse, is a particularly good and chilling adaptation of an H.P. Lovecraft story. But the original The Blair Witch project is one of the best. There are three magical foreign witch films I recommend. Suspiria is Italian director, Dario Argento’s best film. It was released in 1977 and includes the peculiar Udo Kier and Joan Bennett from Dark Shadows (see 2016: #7-GUIDE TO DARK SHADOWS). Haxan is a 1922 Swedish documentary that was banned in the US; watch the version narrated by William S. Burroughs. It is a creepy cornucopia of dark witchy images. Viy is a 1967 Russian film worth seeking out about a young priest who must spend the night in a haunted church; the special effects are unique.

I first became aware of witches when I was very young because a witch appears on Gypsy Witch Fortune Playing Cards which my grandmother owned. Have I ever actually known a witch? Yes, I worked with her at a strange retail store many moons ago (see 2009: #11-THE DIABLERO, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBES). But lots of people call themselves witches these days, for lots of reasons. Witches have permeated our culture from literature, film, tv, even music. Mort Garson’s delightfully danceable, 1968 album, The Wozard of Iz, has all sorts of witchyness. The topic of witches is very much like the two sides of the moon. One side is dark, nonfiction, and is full of innocent people being tortured and killed thru witch hunts. But the other side is illuminated, really interesting and creative, made of fiction and with possibilities of Halloween costumes and spooky movies. Life is a witch, then you fly.

Ok so I love your dynamic posts like some of them I wonder if their edits because they are so SMA Bamon/Steroline. Who would be your all time number one couple dynamic for Bamon,Steroline,stefonnie and daroline

YIKES, I’m about to take this WAY TOO SERIOUSLY and think about it crazy hard so before I fall into that rabbit hole I’m going to spit out gut instinct answers:

Bamon: HONESTLY, they’re like the hardest one because there are lots of elements of the inspirational goody goody x jaded bad boy trope, but Bonnie also has a dark side so they kind of connect on that level too, and it’s weirdly hard to find a dynamic that has both? So in light of that, I’m going to go with Spike x Buffy because I they’re a little greyer than the average good girl/bad boy ship.

Steroline: Dan x Blair (Gossip Girl)

Stefonnie: Haley x Lucas (OTH)

Baroline: Peyton x Liv (iZombie)

Defan: Harvey x Mike (Suits)

Daroline: Lucifer x Maze (Lucifer) *haven’t seen this show but based on gifs they seem to fit*

Another opinionated jerk makes a top ten movies of 2016 list!

Hey everybody and welcome back to my often neglected blog. It’s been even more neglected this year due to me finally figuring out how to use Instagram. This has been a really, really, really good year for movies. Don’t let the haters bring you down, there was a lot of good stuff this year. For the first time in a long time my list isn’t heavily populated with independent genre work (although I always argue all film is genre).

My one cravat as always is that I include festival films that might not have opened wide. This year it’s only one film I think.

Anyways without further adieu:

TOP TEN FILMS OF 2016

1. CHRISTINE

written by Craig Shilowich; directed by Antonio Campos; staring Rebecca Hall, Michael C. Hall, Tracy Letts

This film stuck with me long after watching it. Even now I can’t really get it out of my head. Not to be confused with Kate Plays Christine which also examines the story of television journalist Christine Chubbuck who famously, or rather infamously, committed suicide live on air in 1974. This film is not an entirely joyless watch, and it’s care and craft with the tragic story is stunning.

Rebecca Hall (who I’d somehow never seen in anything before) gives a performance that is so nuanced that you completely understand the depression that hangs over her, and makes her suicide less of shocking event and more of a soft sad gradual ending.

2. NEON DEMON

written by Mary Laws, Polly Stenham, Nicholas Winding Refn; directed by Nicholas Winding Refn; staring Elle Fanning, Jena Malone, Abbey Lee, Bella Heathcote

Haters are gonna hate. That’s the best way to describe the critical reaction to this movie. I don’t want all my thoughts to be about the reaction the film had at Cannes and afterwards but it definitely defined the conversation around this film.

Hopefully with time an audience will find the film and appreciate it for what it is: pure style and attitude. It’s a punk rock middle finger to the male gaze.

3. COLOSSAL

written & directed by Nacho Vigalondo; staring Anne Hathaway, Jason Sudeikius, Tim Blake Nelson, Dan Stevens, Austin Stowell

The single most original film I’ve seen this year. It’s a film about addiction and the effect it has on giant monsters destroying South Korea. I’m not saying anything else because that would ruin the sheer joy of watching this film.

4. HELL OR HIGH WATER

written by Taylor Sheridan; directed by David MacKenzie; staring Chris Pine, Ben Foster, Jeff Bridges, Gil Birmingham

Truly the first great modern-time western since Vanishing Point in the 70s. I’d argue it’s even a better western than No Country For Old Men. One of probably the best portraits of the current American financial landscape, it tells the tale of two brothers (Pine & Foster) who take to robbing banks in order to pay of the mortgage on their late mother’s farmland, while being pursued by two Texas Ranges (Bridges & Birmingham).

The scene that sums up terrible situation that the brothers find themselves in is when they attempt to take a bank only to find that it has been shut down due to lack of business.

It could be read as a metaphor for the current financial wasteland that millennials (Pine & Foster) have been born into and the omnipresent crush of the baby boomers and generation x (Bridges & Birmingham) that is damaging the economy beyond repair. And it has shootouts and car chases!

5. LOVE AND FRIENDSHIP

adapted & directed by Whit Stillman; staring Kate Beckinsale, Chloe Sevigny, Morfydd Clark, Xavier Samuel, Stephen Fry

Whit Stillman always took great inspiration from Jane Austen’s work. Much of his loose comedy of manners trilogy (Metropolitan, Barcelona, Last Days of Disco) would fit right alongside Pride and Prejudice or Emma and would be far more accessible to modern audiences.

This is probably the best (in my opinion only) adaptation of Austen’s work. It’s (as far as I know) the only adaptation of her short novel “Lady Susan.” Beckinsale plays the titular Lady Susan who flirts, gossips, backstabs, and snarks her way through Britain attempting to secure financial security for herself (and possibly her daughter if by accident).

Don’t let the period pedigree fool you: this is a hilarious comedy first and foremost. It succeeds where nearly all other Austen adaptations fail because Stillman embraces the terrible way the characters treat each other and minimizes the too-precious romance that sinks most other adaptations of her work.

6. BLAIR WITCH

written by Simon Barrett; directed by Adam Wingard; staring James Allen McCune, Callie Hernandez, Brandon Scott, Corbin Reid, Wes Robinson, Valorie Curry

At some point it became trendy to crap on any film that was a long late sequel. Especially a sequel to a cultural juggernaut like The Blair Witch Project. A lot of people wrote this film off as a warmed over retread of the original. To be honest I’m sure most of those people didn’t actually see the movie. Or if they did they went in with mind made up and refused to admit that this movie is pretty damned good. And very damned scary.

I caught it at Midnight Madness at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival. Only the hardest of the hardcore go to those screenings and the place was terrified.

The team behind the ludicrously awesome films “You’re Next” and “The Guest” (Barrett & Wingard) made a balls-to-the-wall horror show with their Blair Witch. The audience will feel totally beaten up by the end of this movie and leave questing their safety in society.

7. THE NICE GUYS

written by Anthony Bagarozzi & Shane Black; directed by Shane Black; staring Ryan Gosling, Russel Crowe, Angourie Rice

It’s Shane Black doing a gumshoe hardboiled detective story set in grimy 1970s Los Angeles set during Christmas. If I need to say more: you guys are jerks.

8. THE WITCH

written & directed by Robert Eggers; staring Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Ineson, Kate Dickie, Harvey Scrimshaw, Ellie Grainger, Lucas Dawson

The genius of this movie is that there are no real twists in it; yet it’s wholly (holy?) satisfying. A family of devout Christians are exiled and isolated, and are driven to distrustful paranoia when a coven of witches and the most evilest goat ever to grace the screen target them. A satanic bunny kills a dog and a woman mistakes a crow for her infant son. It’s got everything!

Haunting, horrifying, and beautiful this film is so captivating that it was equally praised by theologians and satanists. It’s mystifying and mysterious in how good of a film it is.

9. LA LA LAND

written & directed by Damien Chazelle; staring Ryga Gosling, Emma Stone, John Legend

Haters are gonna hate, but this movie is simply great.

A musical that finally breaks free of the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice/jukebox musical crappola that we’ve had to deal with since the 70s. You don’t walk away remembering any songs, because the film never comes to a stop to say “here’s a song!”

The music actually is integral to the emotion and character of the story. And it’s quite good too. And maybe now I kinda like jazz?

10. HUSH

written by Kate Siegel & Mike Flanagan; directed by Mike Flanagan; staring Kate Siegel, John Gallagher Jr., Samantha Sloyan, Michael Trucco

Make no bones about it: this is a mean movie. It’s got one of the most clever concepts I’ve ever seen: how would a deaf mute woman defend herself against a home invader?

It’s gripping and tense and you just want the lead character of Maddie (Kate Siegel) to survive and defeat her assailant (John Gallagher Jr.). The movie is essentially just the two of them trying to outsmart one another while both deal with Maddie’s handicap.

It’s just scary enough while never crossing over into the hardcore horror territory the would alienate mainstream audiences.
