hi so there are a lot of valid reasons why adding renesmee to the saga was just a bad idea but like DAMN if smeyer wasn’t such a coward she could have opened up a door for such an interesting dynamic. consider how interesting it could have been to explore renesmee:

feeling like an outcast in her family because she’s the only hybrid

hearing the stories of her parents and wondering if bella’s previous rejection of humanity is by extension a rejection of her

struggling with loneliness because everyone in her family is so much older than her and doesn’t fully understand what it’s like to be her

struggling with the dichotomy of loving her family but simultaneously resenting them because she did not Ask For This Shit

becoming increasingly interested in humans and being apart of humanity

clashing with the cullens because of this interest, as they fear the dangers of getting too close to humans again

even moreso clashing with bella, who struggles to understand why her daughter wants so badly to experience the things bella never saw much value in

leaving the cullens for some years to immerse herself in human life, but still feeling lonely because she’s not fully human either

we’d hope of course, that this conflict would be resolved. but it would be so interesting to see the cullens first struggle to understand her u know? They all saw her as this perfect prodigy child who was brilliant and easy to handle. make her hard to handle, not because she’s bad, but because she’s a complex character with difficult feelings and relationships that need work. let her challenge the way they see humanity as an obstacle. let her be angry. let Bella and Edward feel lost, like they failed her somehow. let them not be a picture perfect happy family and THEN let them work through it all together and have great relationships after some actual effort is put in.

and all of that isn’t even considering how her life would effect the vampire world as a whole, i know other hybrids have existed for years, but renesmee brought their existence to the attention of the volturi. and now the separation between vampire and human becomes less exact, which could create further conflict and questions with the volturi u know. there’s just so much potential imo.

but sure, steph. go for the racism, uncomfortable age gaps, and consent issues. that’s fine too :/

Do you think Esme and Carlisle argue? What about? Like even before Bella came to their lives do you have any head canons? 💕

excellent question my darling, thank you! 

I think they probably argue about the state of their souls now and again. In the early days, and for a good few decades, I think Esme despised any kind of disagreement and found it very distressing. Given her background, it seems fair to assume that she was highly sensitive to the moods of others and feared negative emotions and avoided them at all costs. Any disagreement she had with Carlisle was absolutely non-confrontational and although he enjoys a lively debate, Esme initially never knew where the line between debate and argument was. But still, I think (despite what SMeyer says) that Esme had a Christian faith (in NM Carlisle says that only he and Edward have faith but nah not here for that) and believed in Heaven and Hell and souls and I think she would disagree with Carlisle and Edward that they were damned simply for existing. I think that she and Carlisle would discuss the concept of souls and as Esme grew more confident and their relationship strengthened until she knew for certain that he would never hurt her or raise his voice at her or threaten her, she grew more vocal in her beliefs. I can see them getting in arguments that distressed them both regarding their souls - Carlisle saying that he did not believe he had a soul, and Esme fundamentally disagreeing. Over the years, he came to her way of thinking more, but he was never fully convinced. 

I can see them arguing about Rosalie. Carlisle was probably brought up somewhat frugally (assuming his father was more of a Puritan than a closet Catholic -type Anglican) and Esme was brought up by what we can assume was a moderately successful farmer and probably had a bit more of an indulgent lifestyle. Rosalie, by comparison, came from a high society New York family and was ready to marry the king of Rochester. She was used to a high standard of living. I think Esme was ready to indulge her as much as possible in an attempt to ease the transition to the Cullen family and I can see Carlisle pushing back, not wanting to base their relationship on materialism, and Esme struggling to explain that’s not what she means. Over the years, I think Esme probably thought that Carlisle made mistakes with Rosalie but I can see them discussing it calmly more than arguing. They probably came to an agreement and set a (generous) budget for indulging and spoiling Rosalie. It didn’t fix things and Rosalie protested and acted offended that they were trying to ‘buy’ her but deep down she was grateful because she’s a materialistic queen and u know what? good for her!! 

One point of friction between them was probably the whole funeral thing. It seems cruel to make the whole family go to the funeral of their victims, and it really feels like a power trip on Carlisle’s part. Reading that he makes the family go to the funeral of anyone they feed on and kill made me go batshit it’s just INSANE. Esme is so loving and kind I think that forcing her to go to the funeral of a victim would break her sweet heart, and I think he asks her every time to go and every time she just weeps and cries that she can’t and he tries to change her mind and she puts her foot down, distraught. I think they argue every time it happens with anyone in the family because Esme can see how much it hurts them. Carlisle sees it too, but he thinks it’s still the right thing. Carlisle always wins and the family follows his orders but Esme is always there to bring comfort.

I think their biggest argument was when Carlisle wanted to terminate Bella’s pregnancy at all costs and Esme lost her shit at him in private. She won that argument, understandably.

okay as someone who like is literally enamored with tortured males who learn to love from their extroverted and Type 2 significant other, it wasnt strange for me to fall for Jasper Hale.

What I fucking hated though? was when my minority ass read that this dude was a part of the confederate army. like my heart SHATTERED when i found out that he fought for enslavement and then also wanted to be higher in ranks??? like my heart BROKE.

smeyer didn’t even fucking help because his “redemption” was that “oh wait but he fell in love with some latina” and AS A FUCKING LATINA i was like: w h a t . t h e. A C T U A L FUCK???

like okay so it was fucking bold of her as a writer to fucking write his past to be actually really fucked up, and lowkey i have so much love for Maria in the one way where i sympathize that she was a woman of color trying to survive off the land of her people that was stolen from her by America, and like what i hated was that the movie had sUCH POOR translations for the spanish, it was like so choppy to me and i was like ugh…

but anyways, back to how my heart broke because of jasper being in the wrong side of the civil war, after my heart was ripped to shreds, i read more and (one smeyer just is not the best writer she literally ate Khaki’s ass and i mean the pants), i saw that he began to hate himself because he could feel the pain of all the newborns emotions when he killed them, i could only connect that to the war he fought in. i began to think, did he think back to those times and think on how those he killed who were fighting for freedom felt? now that he was an Empath, did that mean he felt the pain and tortured souls cry for justice when he went to all these schools and witnessed all these POC finally after that long trek, now going to school unsegregated, and then like learning about history only to find out he was on the wrong side? like i just feel like.. the character that smeyer poorly developed, was actually someone we prob would’ve sympathized with.

i don’t condone his fucking actions for fighting in the confederacy cause that’s literally disgusting, fuck white supremacists, but i feel like as a boy who was trapped in that environment and being told that what made a man was being in the army, and desperate to survive this war shit he moved up ranks, and even after he died and was changed, falling in love with a woman who manipulated him (which was like also something i sympathized for maria cause she needed to in order to survive as a WOC) and feeling every death and loathing his existence, until finally he wanted to change?

where he was ashamed to tell his past to bella and fought the inner turmoil that was how to not be a monster as before and now, and finding alice who taught him that there was another way like eating animals instead of humans and learning from the past to change in the future,

i feel like that’s the present jasper. the one who learned the right way of thinking and getting on the right path. we can hate his path, it’s a given, but i can’t find myself to hate him over just smeyers lack of development for her LITERAL characters that she created, and instead connect the dots myself. she lowkey also barely had any poc in this damn book and i hated her for that. but anyways.

BUT WAIT THERES MORE TO MY HATE FOR HER WRITING: yall what i hated was that she wrote Maria as a woman that we were supposed to hate right? but like, the stereotype about latina women is that we are seductresses and like are lowkey manipulative because we know how to seduce and make men lust after us, was used to “manipulate” this “poor pitiful white male”. i hated that. it literally fed into the thinking of like that women should hate on latinas cause that’s what they do they seduce our men and manipulate them. like please bitch. and the way it was just point blank a fucking minority as the villain. ugh it makes me so mad. anyways.

that’s just my thoughts rn and i wanted to write it in words. y’all can disagree cause even sometimes i fight myself on this too. idk it’s just me feeling like as a reader i make the world that she wrote better.
