Read -> Reading -> To-Read: Black History Month Graphic Novel Round Up
Check out these awesome graphic novels reader's advisor Ashley has been picking up for Black History Month!
Tumblr media
Read: Kindred by Octavia Butler, adapted by Damian Duffy
This graphic novel was adapted from the book Kindred by Octavia Butler. This story more recently has also been made into a TV series for Hulu. In this twisted tale, Dana is living in the 1970s when she begins having dizzy spells shake her to the core. These dizzy spells lead to her waking up in the 1800s helping a boy who she refers to as “Rufe.” While Dana is not sure what brings these spells on at first, she has an even harder time time trying to figure out how to make it stop.
Ms. Davis: A Graphic Biography by Sybille Titeux de la Croix, art by Amazing Ameziane
The story of Angela Davis is filled with resistance and unwillingness to accept unfair treatment and judgment. She is infamous for being a part of the FBI's Most Wanted List in 1971 due to an incident that occurred where she was accused as the main conspirator.
Reading her story as a graphic novel does not take away the seriousness of her story. I appreciate that the book provides explanations of key events; that is helpful if you are only hearing about some of the events for the first time, as I was. This book was a random find but it sent me down a research hole that made me want to learn more, and that is what any good book does.
Reading: Miles Davis and the Search for the Sound by Dave Chisholm
Miles Davis was an extremely talented musician. He thought outside of the box when it came to his music, so it is fitting that this graphic novel tells his story in an eclectic way.
The story begins as Miles has just gotten a piece of life-altering news in 1982. From there, he reminisces and begins telling his origin story. The artwork and illustrations of this graphic novel are beautiful. The colors truly jump off the page and speak to you, as clear as the words do. The funky art and the insight of Miles' fascinating yet tumultuous life make this book a true learning experience that explores the cool world of jazz and many of its legends.
To-Read: Toussaint Louverture: The Story of the Only Successful Slave Revolt in History by C.L.R. James, adapted by Nic Watts and Sakina Karimjee
This graphic novel details the Haitian Revolution led by Toussaint Louverture. This graphic novel is based on the play by C.L.R. James, produced in 1936. If you love history, and revolutions, this graphic novel my pique your interest.

Comics Read 10/29-11/08/2022
Over the past week plus I read the comic book adaptation of Octavia Butler’s The Parable of the Sower by Damian Duffy and John Jennings. They previously adapted her novel Kindred and I read it back in 2017 or 2018, a period in which I wasn’t updating this blog. I have not read the novels on which either of these is based, though I have read Butler’s work collected in Blood Child and Other Stories and Seed to Harvest. Despite not having read either of the source materials, it feels like Kindred is more amenable to adaptation than The Parable of the Sower. As this is an adaptation of something I haven’t read, I’m going to avoid discussing the plot or its political relevance. The plot sprawls with dozens of characters, the political relevance has some really keen moments and other aspects feel best appreciated as a product of the early 1990s, when the original book was written. I can't really say anything of value about it.
I do want highlight that I appreciate that it gets the concept of empathy correct, and I like the way the lead character’s, Lauren Olamina, “hyper-empathy” illustrates it. It’s become a pet peeve of mine that too many people use the word “empathy” (the psychological identification with or vicarious experiencing of the emotions, thoughts, or attitudes of another”)  when they mean some kind of very strong sympathy (the act or state of feeling sorrow or compassion for another), minus whatever pitying condescension they associate with that word. A person can feel another persons pain and not care, or blame the other person for their discomfort. The hyper-empathy described here is involuntary and easily manipulated. It applies to pain and pleasure. That said, the artistic choice to describe this is part of what makes the book often feel too busy and confusing. The experience of hyper-empathy is generally in the color red, but not a red that is distinct enough from the colors use in the rest of the book to be automatically clear that this is what is happening. Sometime Lauren is portrayed as having whatever affliction she sees and feels. Sometimes a body part of hers is super imposed in red over the character being injured. Other times the whole panel is portrayed in red. I’m constantly reminding myself what I’m reading.
Tumblr media
The plot involves many characters who often appear only briefly, have a mostly tragic story told and then leave. It seems at odds with artistic choices including the portrayal of hyper-empathy, as well as the rough expressiveness of the style. The story alternates between Lauren’s experiences, and how she interprets them in her notebook, the original draft of what becomes the basis of Earthseed, the religion that she is in the process of founding. In the early pages of the comic they try and address this by including the lines from notebook paper in the drawing, essentially fading into the background while the reader goes more into Lauren’s perspective.

Nature and Young Adult Lit
This may be a strange slightly rambling post, but one thing led to another. As I bicycle to work each day, there are several oak trees to pass which means that lately there are many, many acorns to dodge. Recently on Threads, author Jen Ferguson [Those Pink Mountain Nights] mentioned having a load of acorns raining down on the roof. This got me thinking about the chapter in Braiding Sweetgrass when the author's grandfather gathers up pecans during a year with an extraordinarily large crop. That story is a good one and may be found here. From there I leapt to thinking about nature and young adult lit because that's what my brain does.
Obviously, Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teaching of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer and Monique Gray Smith was the first young adult book that came to mind. It's a beautiful memoir with a look at Indigenous science and the natural world. The illustrations by Nicole Neidhardt are fantastic and make it an excellent book to pour over. See our review here.
This led me to thinking about Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Boulley. In it, the main character has learned about nature through Indigenous teachings, but also through schooling and texts. There were parallels between Kimmerer's lived experience and the fictional account of Daunis. You can learn more about the book in our Group Discussion.
Highly Suspicious and Unfairly Cute by Talia Hibbert is a book that that involves the outdoors and romance. We had a Group Discussion for this one too. In that discussion, Jessica mentioned Alexis Nicole Nelson, also known as The Black Forager. Looking at the acorns around me I wondered if she had done a video about them and yup, that is a thing she's collected and talked about. I don't know if she will be writing a book for young adults anytime soon, but for now, there is an incredible amount of video content on Tiktok, Instagram, and YouTube including the relatively new Crash Course Botany class.
Reflecting on nature, there is an awful lot of things that can go wrong so there are also quite a few dystopian and sci-fi books that are concerned with the environment, disasters, and climate change.
The Parable of the Sower: A Graphic Novel Adaptation is based on Octavia E. Butler’s novel of the same name and is by Damian Duffy and John Jennings. The story follows a young girl as she navigates a world that is in severe distress. She is not only trying to survive, but she is contemplating faith and what it means to her and what it could look like for others.
The Ones We're Meant to Find by Joan He is another survival type of story in the midst of natural disasters due to climate change. The story revolves around two sisters.
Want by Cindy Pon really digs into the economic disparities in relation to climate change and environmental issues. It's set in Taipei not too far in the future. You can read more about this awesome book in our Group Discussion.
Orleans by Sherrie L. Smith is an older title, but also delves into some of these issues of the environment and economic disparities. Here is our review.
Are there other books about nature and the environment that you think we've missed or should watch for in the future?

What are your top 3 favourite books (/comics/manga/poems/etc...) and/or top 3 you would recommend to others?
oh god............. top 3 favorite books is so hard bc i read SO much and then. stopped. but here's my semi-outdated list:
aristotle and dante discover the secrets of the universe by benjamin alire saenz, tangled by carolyn mackler, and kindred by octavia e. butler, damian duffy, and john dennings. (also my favorite manga is assassination classroom that silly lil series my beloved)
top 3 books that i would recommend are hard, bc i read so many different genres, but i think a safe and easy three are: aristotle and dante discover the secrets of the universe by benjamin alire saenz (everyone ever should read this book. like just once. it changed me fundamentally as a person), carry on by rainbow rowell (or fangirl by rainbow rowell depending on the person i think. anyway i got my best friend a copy of this for her graduation and like wrote a personalized message in it so. you know. its everything to me.), and the raven boys by maggie stiefvater.
(if you're, like, an avid reader though, i may recommend kindred by octavia e. butler, damian duffy, and john dennings, the perks of being a wallflower by stephen chbosky, and the five people you meet in heaven by mitch albom)

Power Rankings
I saw @marzena-doe's list and decided to create a quick one myself. This includes characters besides the Royal Family of Mongo, and is based on my understanding of current power levels. A few notes follow.
Ora
Amy O'Connor
Duffy Gordon
Veena Dark
Zorelda
Mandrake
Cathleen O'Connor
Damian Dark
Jedda Walker
Jedda Gordon
Hadea
Sheila DeWindt
Duffy's telepathy is generally shown to be stronger than Jedda Walker's. So far, we've learned that Duffy can control several people in a room without much effort. Her power can even reach someone from a building across a street. However, Amy's ability to fly and to detect others would likely allow her to avoid Duffy's telepathic range while attacking at a distance. Veena can project and direct lightning while hovering as well.
One of Zorelda's most impressive abilities in the TV series was her power to teleport others to a place of her choosing, but it's never made clear just how far she can move someone, or if she can warp them to a location that she isn't familiar with. In fan fiction, she displays impressive energy projection, and presumably has the same powers that she gave Krotan temporarily.
Mandrake, of course, has a variety of tricks up his sleeve, as does Cathleen. Jedda Gordon shows much potential, but does not demonstrate the same mastery of telekinesis that Amy displays. At present, Jedda's use of the power also weakens her.
Sheila can summon strong force fields, but Hadea's ability to heal likely gives her an edge in battle, as it makes her -- and her allies -- especially difficult to overcome.

DC also announced DC Finest, a new line of comprehensive collections of the most in-demand periods, genres, and characters from across DC history. Scheduled to launch in November, these affordably priced, large-size paperback collections start at $34.99, and will take full advantage of DC’s extensive backlist and appeal to casual and completist fans alike. Focusing on characters and storytelling genres instead of creators or prior series will give casual fans the chance to discover full continuities for their favorite characters, while offering completist readers an affordable option to build out their ultimate collection of stories based on their favorite DC Super Hero or genre.
Tumblr media
Character-focused collections will spotlight multiple iterations of fan-favorite DC Super Heroes throughout the decades; for example, a “Robin” collection may include volumes featuring Dick Grayson, Tim Drake, Damian Wayne, or Jason Todd, depending on chronology, while a “Green Lantern” collection may include classic stories featuring Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Kyle Rayner, Alan Scott, or other fan-favorite ring slingers. Genre fans can curate collections of their favorite tales from specific genres, which may include science fiction, romance, war, westerns, horror, and other genres; many of these volumes will feature material reprinted for the first time, by some of comics’ greatest storytellers. The first wave of DC Finest collections include: DC Finest – The Flash: The Human Thunderbolt: Collects classic adventures of Barry Allen, the Silver Age Flash, by John Broome and Carmine Infantino, including 1956’s iconic Showcase #4. Also includes Silver Age Flash stories that include the first appearances of famous Flash rogues, including Captain Cold, Mirror Master, and Gorilla Grodd. DC Finest – Batman: Year One & Two: Collects the Dark Knight’s adventures following the game-changing crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths, including Batman: Year One by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli and Batman: Year Two by Mike W. Barr and Todd McFarlane, plus more mid-to-late-’80s Batman stories from Barr, Max Allan Collins, Norm Breyfogle, and others. DC Finest – Wonder Woman: Origins & Omens: This collection spotlights fan-favorite writer Gail Simone’s run on Wonder Woman, starting with 2007’s “The Circle,” with artist Terry Dodson, plus celebrated story arcs “Ends of the Earth,” “Rise of the Olympian,” and “Warkiller,” featuring art by Aaron Lopresti. DC Finest – Catwoman: Life Lines: Selina Kyle steps out of Batman’s shadow and becomes a protagonist in her own right in this collection featuring Catwoman’s 1989 solo debut by Mindy Newell and J.J. Birch, Peter Milligan and Tom Grindberg’s Catwoman Defiant from 1992, and the first year of DC’s Catwoman ongoing series, by writer Jo Duffy and artist Jim Balent. DC Finest – Superman: The Coming of Superman: Features the Man of Steel’s earliest and most iconic adventures, starting with Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s groundbreaking Action Comics #1. This collection includes Action Comics #1-25, Superman #1-5, and New York World’s Fair Comics #1.
It only took them a decade but DC finally came out with their equivalency to the Marvel Epic Collection. Marvel Masterworks is met with DC Archive Editions, Marvel Essential is met with Showcase Presents, Marvel Premiere Classic is met with DC Comics Classics Library, DC didn't even change the name for their own Omnibus line. They admittedly have the Absolute Edition over Marvel. DC only since 2016 or so has been putting in the work to get a ton of stuff back in print or in print for the first time, we JUST got our first Silver Age Superman Omnibus. I could see myself picking up a few of DC's Finest, we'll see.

2023 Resolutions (December)
LAST POST.
For 2023, I was going to read 50 books, with at leas 24 of them being novels/fiction - which is exactly what I did, 50 books, 24 fiction and 26 nonfiction.
Also two new-to-me albums a month. To close it out I had to finish a lot of books this month that I had started earlier...
For December:
Fiction:
The Adult-Bronwyn Fischer (2023)
Mrs. S - K. Patrick (2023)
Parable of the Sower (Graphic Novel)- Octavia Butler/Damian Duffy (1993/2022) (first time with graphic novel, had read novel before)
Biography of X - Catherine Lacey (2023)
Wilder Girls - Rory Powers (2019)
Not So Quiet - Helen Zenna Smith (1930) (a re-read)
Nonfiction:
Memoirs of a Man's Maiden Years - N.O. Body (1904) (a re-read)
The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath- Sylvia Plath (1955ish)
The Years- Annie Erneux (2008)
Banished Knowledge - Alice Miller (1988)
Albums:
Laugh Track- The National (2023)
Paint my Bedroom Black - Holly Humberstone (2023)
Highlights:
The Adult and Biography of X are two of my favorite novels of the year, although I have critiques of Biography of X and The Adult took about 100 pages to get good. (but then it really, really did)
I've read and re-read Not So Quiet a lot and this is I think the best I've loved it. I'm so excited to teach it in February.
I understand why Erneux won the Nobel Prize for The Years but I didn't especially like it.

UBN Challenge 2023 Recap - Part III
Tumblr media
Photo by Tom Hermans on Unsplash
Part III of the Ultimate Book Nerd Challenge 2023 Recap - Categories 21-30!
This particular round had some difficult categories for me to find books I really wanted to read, but two of my favorites from this set of reads are Biography of X and The Story of Art Without Men. Both books were hard for me to finish in the best way possible - I just didn't want them to be over. I savored each page, which wasn't great for speeding through the rest of my list, but it meant that I really got to immerse myself in the prose.
I should add that when I do the UBN Challenge, I bounce around the categories. I will often choose a book in advance, only to come back to it and realize I'd rather read something else. So there's a lot of shuffling that happens for me to get through these categories and actually enjoy the process (sometimes it's not that enjoyable, actually).
About 30 books into the challenge, I found myself getting a little bored. Instead of taking a break from reading, I picked up another challenge. In August, I completed the Sealey Challenge (a book of poetry every day for the whole month). I thought I'd be burned out as a result, but I ended up finding my second wind and reigniting my passion for poetry! Sometimes you just have to find the right book to fall in love with reading again.
Now for the recap:
21. Read a book by an author that shares their first name with you (or initials if first name is impossible) - Biography of X by Catherine Lacey (I cheated a little on this one, since I share my first name with the writer's last name) *
22. Read a book found in a book list (NY Times, etc.) - Ducks by Kate Beaton *
23. Read a gothic novel - Skim by Mariko Tamaki
24. Read a western - True Grit by Charles Portis *
25. Read a biographical fiction - Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders* (also highly recommend the audiobook of this one!)
26. Read a book involving art - The Story of Art Without Men by Katy Hessel *
27. Read a graphic novel adaptation of a classic - Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler, adapted by Damian Duffy and John Jennings
28. Read a NaNoWriMo Book - Evvie Drake Starts Over by Linda Holmes
29. Read a romance - Sunburn by Andi Watson
30. Read a book written from a non-human point of view - Birds of Maine by Michael DeForge *
*Books I'd recommend to a friend or read again.

Rick learns of the baby.
Aura gives birth to a daughter, Azura.
Amy decides that she loves this baby, no matter what, and if there’s a chance it will chose the side of good, then she will risk it. There’s a lot more drama going on all season because of the powers that child has but I’ll spare you the details.
Damian Dark is connected to Theron’s past. I assume that would make him Mandrake’s brother?
Amy and Rick get back together and Amy gives birth to her daughter. Rick asks her to marry him.
Flash’s long lost daughter is named Daphne. Yup, it’s Duffy.

Collects Black Panther (2016) #1-4, Fantastic Four (1961) #52.
Fine by Rhea Ewing
As graphic artist Rhea Ewing neared college graduation in 2012, they became consumed by the question: What is gender? This obsession sparked a quest in which they eagerly approached both friends and strangers in their quiet Midwest town for interviews to turn into comics. A decade later, this project exploded into a sweeping portrait of the intricacies of gender expression with interviewees from all over the country. Questions such as "How do you Identify" produced fiercely honest stories of dealing with adolescence, taking hormones, changing pronouns—and how these experiences can differ, often drastically, depending on culture, race, and religion.
Amidst beautifully rendered scenes emerges Ewing's own story of growing up in rural Kentucky, grappling with their identity as a teenager, and ultimately finding themself through art—and by creating something this very fine. Tender and wise, inclusive and inviting, Fine is an indispensable account for anyone eager to define gender in their own terms.
Kindred by Octavia E. Butler & John Jennings
More than 35 years after its release, Kindred continues to draw in new readers with its deep exploration of the violence and loss of humanity caused by slavery in the United States, and its complex and lasting impact on the present day. Adapted by celebrated academics and comics artists Damian Duffy and John Jennings, this graphic novel powerfully renders Butlerâs mysterious and moving story, which spans racial and gender divides in the antebellum South through the 20th century.
Butlerâs most celebrated, critically acclaimed work tells the story of Dana, a young black woman who is suddenly and inexplicably transported from her home in 1970s California to the pre-Civil War South. As she time-travels between worlds, one in which she is a free woman and one where she is part of her own complicated familial history on a southern plantation, she becomes frighteningly entangled in the lives of Rufus, a conflicted white slaveholder and one of Danaâs own ancestors, and the many people who are enslaved by him.
Held up as an essential work in feminist, science-fiction, and fantasy genres, and a cornerstone of the Afrofuturism movement, there are over 500,000 copies of Kindred in print. The intersectionality of race, history, and the treatment of women addressed within the original work remain critical topics in contemporary dialogue, both in the classroom and in the public sphere.
The Life-Changing Manga of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo & Yuko Uramoto
Marie Kondo presents the fictional story of Chiaki, a young woman in Tokyo who struggles with a cluttered apartment, messy love life, and lack of direction. After receiving a complaint from her attractive next-door neighbor about the sad state of her balcony, Chiaki gets Kondo to take her on as a client. Through a series of entertaining and insightful lessons, Kondo helps Chiaki get her home—and life—in order. This insightful, illustrated case study is perfect for people looking for a fun introduction to the KonMari Method of tidying up, as well as tried-and-true fans of Marie Kondo eager for a new way to think about what sparks joy. Featuring illustrations by award-winning manga artist Yuko Uramoto, this book also makes a great read for manga and graphic novel lovers of all ages.

Did you know that before the television adaptation of Kindred, there was a graphic novel adaption? By John Jennings and Damian Duffy, the graphic novel was published in 2017 by Abrams Books. Below are what some great minds thought of the graphic novel adaption: "Wonderful. Captures the essence of Octavia Butler’s vision even as it demonstrates the superlative skills of Duffy and Jennings." ~ author of Skin Folk, The New Moon’s Arms, and Sisters Mine, Nalo Hopkinson "Adapting any prose novel to the graphic format is an audacious undertaking at the best of times, but translating Octavia E. Butler’s fearsomely powerful work in particular must surely have been a herculean task. Yet Damian Duffy and John Jennings have managed it…A worthy and powerful supplement to a classic.” ~ The New York Times @nytimes Reposted from @mina_reads Have you guys read #kindred by #octaviabutler? I’ve read the novel version so I’m excited to dig into this story in the pictorial format for class. We are in stock!
