when I played Caribert, I was pretty disappointed about the lack of impact Dain seemed to have on Kaeya, honestly. during Kaeya's hangout, he didn't mention the weird cryptic blond dude who just dropped family lore once, which I thought would have been pretty important?

but in truth, I think Dain actually had a HUGE impact on Kaeya.

we can all know that from Kaeya's personal lore and former events that Kaeya had very conflicted feelings over his duty to Khaenri'ah and his love for Mondstadt, even with his estranged relationship with Diluc (which now seems partly fixed?), but in the performance route of Kaeya's hangout, Kaeya makes his choice.

The story of Prince Qubad is a very, very thinly veiled metaphor for Khaenri'ah all throughout, and then we finally get to the end scene of the play:

Kaeya: When I departed my beloved home to fight in a foreign land, I did so to honor his (my father's) wishes and for my duty to our people. Kaeya: alas, is this fate's grand design… that I should spend the rest of my days in a foreign land, till I am laid to rest in a grave far from home? K: Must it be so…? K: my dear audience, I ask you this: do you believe in fate? if fate decreed that your life was to end in tragedy, what would you do? Traveler: I would challenge my fate, and rise above it. / I would bravely face my fate. K: then so must it be! I shall discard this intaglio, and rid myself of the shackles of fate. G: my dear prince, do you intend to betray your father, and abandon your heritage? K: fate means to send the machinations of war to every corner of the land, to fan the flames of conflict til they engulf the entire world…

K: fate would see my sword tainted with the blood of innocents, that the bright banner of my homeland might fly in every nation known to mankind. K: but I shall not bow to the will of fate. I am no pawn in heaven's plan. K: I, Kaeya Qubad, will spend the rest of my days in a foreign land, til I breathe my last in a place far from home. K: but I must walk this path, or freedom dies by my hand. goodbye, my tribe and kin. farewell, sweet land of my birth.

after a lifetime of questioning his role, Kaeya makes his choice for Mondstadt. and I think this happening after meeting Dain isn't a coincidence. (and no, not in a soulmate way or shipping way- this is Kaeya's moment of choice, not infatuation.)

after not only learning the history of his origins, Kaeya meets a Khaenri'ahn who... doesn't want to return Khaenri'ah to its glory days? who is more focused on helping others and minimizing damage than causing more for his own gain? who chose his path and has not budged since, even through loss?

Kaeya gets to see someone who is so Khaenri'ahn, so human at his core, someone who cares not for the fate and tragedy of their nation. Kaeya gets to meet someone from his homeland who tells him to leave it all behind, who tells him he should take the chance he has been given at his own life; who actively discourages the idea of Kaeya being a fated "prince" or being indebted to Khaenri'ah.

even though he never said it, I think meeting Dainsleif helped Kaeya choose his own path, which is all Dain ever truly asked of him, anyway.

good for Kaeya.

Pls your Dottore and Dainsleif writing makes me feral. I always kind of liked a cat and mouse kind of thing so imagine this: mage!darling. If Dottore, they have been painfully aware of something— or rather someone— has hyper fixated on them as of late. Fatui agent's has been rather relentless in their attempts to capture them, but luckily for darling, they are well known for being unattainable if they did not want to be found. As powerful as they are, it was almost child's play batting away or staying out of reach from the fatui. They've become far too confident, cocky even, after they even managed to out best the Doctor! Or at least who they thought was the Doctor. The Prime has become rather impatient at the failures of the fatui agents much less his own clone, his very own creation. Did he have to do everything himself? Well...they did say that if you want a job done well, do it yourself. Then so be it. If darling insists on playing cat and mouse, then he is willing take the bait. It'll only be a matter of time before darling have to face the inevitable and he was always one to enjoy the fruits of his hard labor.

If Dainsleif, I'd imagine darling being an unaging mage, a feat obtained after a freak accident with one too many potions. When was Dainsleif ever going to find another delight that wasn't shackled by the unforgiven grips of mortality? This had to be fate finally taking pity on his unresting soul, a gift from the higher heavens. No matter if it is or isn't, he wasn't going to let such a beauty slip right through his finger tips. He can almost taste them upon his tongue and it left him starving for more.

anon i love both of these thoughts so much . . . ah. both a terrible fate, for entirely different reasons. dottore becoming obsessed with them just because of the idea of power, of what they could do for him, of how . . . resistant they are, how well they work through everything that dottore throws at them. how fascinating it would be to find out everything he could about them - and, of course, someone who is so clever and so highly regarded in their field would be a fitting partner for the doctor, even if he did have to make some modifications to make them a little more willing.

and dainsleif - on the surface, perhaps it doesn't sound so bad. but when you realise that it will stretch on forever and ever, that dainsleif will stubbornly cling to you and will never let you leave, because you and he are birds of a feather. kin. fated to be. and it doesn't matter if you disagree, because even if you shake him off for now - it won't take him that long to find you again.

faves: (this is gonna be a long one lmao)

Heizou- (obviously) the way he flirts is so hot. he’s really such a big tease

Kaeya- that man is PACKING. like is it really necessary to wear pants that tight? (not that i’m complaining tho👀)

Albedo- the ultimate rizzler. the true husbando collector. not even lyney can reach the level of rizz he has

Aether- i go feral over him and his slutty little waist UGH love him. i even mained him up until i pulled wanderer in 3.8 (i think i was also AR48 at the time so aether has spent the most time on my team)

Dottore- look i know this man is a fucking monster but as the saying goes “if evil, why hot?”. i would let him experiment on me fr

Xiao- emo babie. i love him so much, he makes me feel so many things all at once

Scaramouche/Wanderer- look, i have a huge degradation kink so i think this is self explanatory LMFAO if he stepped on me, i would thank him. pretty sure he will be my main all the way to the end of the game tbh

Diluc & Alhaitham- there’s something about a serious, emotionally unavailable man that really gets me going

Lyney: i have a love hate relationship with this man. i love how forward he is when he’s flirting and he’s quite nice to look at but again there’s just something about him that i just don’t like. idk i feel like he’s very self absorbed in way.

Dainsleif: another love hate relationship. he’s so mysterious and pretty but the way he barely gives any crumbs when he gets screentime annoys me lol

Pierro: he’s hot i guess but like idk how to explain what i’m trying to say without sounding fucking insane lmfao i guess he just reminds me of an evil santa claus HAHAHA

Childe: realistically he and i would probably get along the best out of any of the guys listed (beside kaveh). we’re very similar in personality but he’s only part of the least fav category because he’s kinda cringey lmao i mean that in an endearing way but also in the way that i want to strangle him (although he would probably be into that lol) also his stupid little jacket makes me mad, why does it look like that. I appreciate the tummy window but i think he would’ve looked way better in some kind of button down with a chest window 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’ve been thinking about it for awhile, and I think I’ve pinned down the reason why I love both of the Travelers and Dainsleif’s dynamics so much in Genshin.

The idea that, even if you’ve lost yourself, “turned to the dark side” or just gone off the deep end, your friends and family will always fight to get you back. Even if you’ve at some point tried to push them away.

The abyss twin, who has clearly gone through a lot in the past 500 years since the cataclysm and being separated from their only kin, at some point gave up. They had already traveled to the ends of the earth and back looking for their sibling and came back empty handed.

For reasons currently unknown they deemed Dainseif, their former friend and travel companion, a traitor, they may have assumed the Traveler was dead, or simply unreachable, and turned to the abyss for solutions to their problems.

All of that didn’t stop Dainsleif from going after them though, to the point where he will challenge the Traveler to a duel to prove they were worthy of saving the abyss twin.

(Also the audacity he has, making them prove themselves to him is hilarious to me. And on a kind of unrelated note, I love the line literally right after this about how he will “always remember how much she too loved these flowers.” It’s just so sweet and sad)

And I know I’ve talked about their dynamic multiple times at this point but of course the Traveler still hasn’t stopped looking for their sibling.

Even after they technically found them, they haven’t given up their search. Even after the abyss twin left them in that cave with zero answers, even after they saw how much they’ve changed since they were separated, and even after their morally questionable actions in the Chasm. The Traveler hasn’t turned their back on them.

Why? Because they love them, and they know what kind of person they are at heart.

I just love the idea that love conquers all, and the people that truly care about you will drag you from the very depths of the abyss, simply because they love you.

And I have no idea what happened between Dainsleif and the Abyss twin, why they decided he was their enemy and what he did to have them consider him a traitor. But it seems to me that even after they ditched him for the abyss, he still cares about them.

I mean considering the fact that the only time he ever remotely talked bad about them to the Traveler was when he called them stubborn (and from the character trailers it seems that Dainsleif has very strong opinions about people) he still seems found of them.

Maybe I’m insane and am the only one that thinks this way, but all that to say that I just adore the family/found family dynamics the three of them have.

Also I can’t wait to see Dainsleif and the Traveler bond more. I wonder what that will look like, and how closely it will mirror Dainsleif’s friendship with their twin.

and so here you are, sitting all pretty and flushed as pierro caresses your cheeks and throat with his talons as he slips a thin silver chain around your neck, smiling lightly at the tiny gasp you let out due to the cold of the beautiful glowing blue stone attached to the necklace as it fell upon your bosom.

you were his, he was certain of that and he had to fight the urge to sink his fangs into your warm neck and mate you to him. but everything would soon fall into place, just you wait darling~

for now pierro would gloat in silence, parading you around zapolyarny palace and showing off your beauty, the quiet mark of his ownership hanging and glinting around your neck for everyone to see <3

or or chieftan!pierro claiming you, the young beauty from his tribe and wedding you to him much to the jealousy of his two sons, kaeya and dainsleif <3 you are the daughter of one of the commanders of the tribe who just so happens to be his close friend and brother-in-arms, and pierro has been observing you for quite some time now. he watched you as the whole clan celebrated your 20th spring ceremony, beautiful flowers woven into your hair as you laughed and danced around the celebratory fire in a simple but tasteful dress reserved for special occasions like this.

the silver haired man couldn't really help but let his imagination run wild and in his mind's eyes he could already see your wedding; you all bashful and flushed under all the attention you were receiving. hair woven into intricate braids decorated with a flower crown made from the rarest mountain flowers, dressed in the finest white sable furs, a white wedding gown specially imported for this occasion, after all pierro wants all whats best for his new bride. your painted red lips would shyly open when he'd feed you the best cuts of meat and various fruits as he growled words of praise for your beauty and purring promises of what will come when it will be time to whisk you away to your now shared tent <3 all the while the man was fully aware of the two pairs of eyes watching you two and burning with barely contained jealousy and rage, pierro could almost taste the anger his two sons felt after he quite literally snatched you right from under their greedy little hands and made you his wife. pierro wasn't a petty man but he couldn't help but shoot kaeya and dain a knowing look over his shoulder as he led you with an arm possessively wrapped around your shoulder towards your shared tent to consummate your marriage, the noises from the cheering rowdy clanspeople overpowering the furious growls coming from his sons </3

he jerked slightly when he had to leave his imagination and return to the present. suddenly he was very aware of the way his two idiot boys tried to flirt with you and woo you as you shyly averted your gaze from the smirking men as they flexed in front of you and showed off like two peacocks. pierro could only raise a silver eyebrow as he watched the scene unfold, already feeling for his sons when he'll make the grand announcement to the clan that he's taking a wife-you <3

So very deep down under the sea, the echoes of the depths resonate within his very core, silent, yet forceful as rogue waves crashing against the hull of doomed ships during a storm. "Forgive me." He finally mutters at his companion's address, eyes closing so as to ward off intrusive memories seeking to ebb at his mind before he grants them permission to. "This place is charged with memories and emotions... I need a moment to adjust." But that is not the whole truth, is it -- hydro is not the only vector welcoming him in those lands like earth craving water after a draught. Deep within his soul, dormant nature stirs - ancient and ferocious, proud and regal even in its downfall. The dragon of water has come home; and to him, Enkanomiya signs the somber hymn of long fallen kin.

Even amidst all his efforts, images slip past - humans and vishaps clawing at one another's throats, each fighting for survival; an artificial light, burning and blinding his retinas; newborn vishaps growing into elements that were never meant to be theirs, freezing and electrifying their vulnerable minds into frenzy; starvation, torture, a laboratory, pain, fury and despair beyond measure. "For as long as I can remember, a part of my consciousness has always been tied to this place... I know not whether I was born here or elsewhere, but... though human-born I was, my memory was always tethered to theirs." The sovereigns murmurs. At his side, Dainsleif's aura may very well be the last tether he has to the present, before getting swept by the tide of memories. "Have I failed them?" His voice is barely a whisper now - he who commands justice and order, a judge and ruler - and perhaps, one day, an executioner. "I am their sovereign... and yet, in five hundred years, I have never gone to rescue them... however few of us are left."

Land of the white night reveals itself before the eyes of the ancient with Hyperion standing proud and high farther from where they stand shining like the artificial sun it is. Now a no man's land that long ago it has been abandoned by following generations of people who once used to be part of the unified civilization in the Era of the Saints, before the Apocalypse struck Teyvat and with it, gods ceased to answer the prayers of the humans. Not only that, but these in particular, most of them turned into ghostfire phantasms, were denied return to the so-called world shaped to allow human life to prosper and locked to coexist with the Abyss in a similar manner as Khaenri'ah did— and to forever war against vishaps whose rest was perturbed by the coming of creations of the god they have come to despise so. Not without reason, for it was by his hand that their kings have fallen one by one, fated to wither away until naught but a shadowy reminiscence of their previous existence is left in the hearts of those who laments their loss— soon to rebirth.

This is only the second time Dáinsleif has ever stepped on holy grounds to the vishaps, not prompted by the necessity to perform the ritual to ensure the survival of the island above, but by his own suggestion to the sovereign of all waters to come visit it at the notion that never before he came. From what little this fallen seraphim can offer him, leading him to some semblance of home that the land of the midnight sun might be to a bleeding heart that has an unequivocally grander connection to this land that he may have with Fontaine.

Ironically, there is some semblance of familiarity within him upon stepping these grounds, too. A more spiritual one he fails to make connection with, tied exclusively with that elusive destiny he has encountered in a moment of being completely at a loss after losing it all. The shape his fate takes after, and a name to go with that represents immense importance to ancients of old that no longer live here, that one day he would like to investigate more about: Ouroboros— perhaps a topic to ask Leviathan himself about, for as far as he's concerned that is no dragon, but a serpent. Even yet, one of the philosophies he reminisces the eidolons murmuring about in hushed whispers when Evernight falls is that dragons and serpents have little to differ about.

Dáinsleif cannot begin to imagine what the coming to Enkanomiya must suppose to Neuvillette's psyche— what memories might return to him in full strength and what sentiments and echoes he must feel and hear the same from these poisoned waters. Sensing his paralysis, his name slips past roseate lips not with the intent to startle him, but to rouse him back to awareness and, if an emotional whirlpool made its way to his very core, give him the strength to emerge from it victorious and not let waters drown the dragon that has authority over them, of all beings.

To Neuvillette's apology, a gentle shake of his head is offered to dispel all enormity of guilt he shouldn't feel. Crystalline blues gaze upon Helios, making a mental note to shut it off at the closest opportunity to spare the draconic rex and all vishaps that are left wandering this soil. For there is no meaning in keeping an artificial sun alight when it has already served its purpose, completely meaningless now that only those whom even know about the existence of this fragment of a fallen civilization and their way to its grounds come here. His gaze returns to Leviathan as he speaks further, glacial sapphires narrowing gentle and compassionate to allow him to express himself in a moment where he needs it most— and when, perhaps, he didn't have a chance to yet.

◜According to scriptures of the ancients that were forced to conceal and leave behind, should they desire to return to the surface, your rebirth in human form was anticipated.◞ He reminisces as much from reading the collection of books that he was requested to retrieve, and, eventually, their completion would become the Sun and Moon collection. ◜Because part of the vishaps had undergone adaptation in mutating their original element for another, provoked and holding no other solution but adapt to their circumstances and do so naturally, you would be unable to be born as a fully-fledged dragon. I ignore how old these scriptures are, but I can attest with entire confidence that they predate the end of the Archon War in Inazuman lands.◞

Celestial azures widen when Leviathan questions himself if he has failed the vishaps and with it, his own heart drops to the pit of his stomach. Stellar pupils quiver within their depths as his eyes narrow, a crease makes its way betwixt fair brows before albescent lashes flutter close as the same question echoes within the recesses of seraphim's broken mind, in his voice, worth all the times he ever questioned himself the same.

At least one of them still has a chance.

◜Too many times to remember have I asked myself the same.◞ Albescent lashes flutter open a tad to reveal quivering, sapphire irises. ◜Even if I am fighting to protect the honor and dignity of my knights, and of the people I sword protection… "Have I failed them?" Would it have been better if only I joined the Abyss Order? Are my actions contributing to the prolongation of their suffering, of those who still exist as hilichurls or otherwise after five hundred years? I was supposed to protect all of them, but I was useless to stand against the gods that brought destruction and desolation to Khaenri'ah.◞ Starlight-kissed strands sway gently with another shake of his head, before Dáinsleif turns fully to look at Neuvillette. ◜Even if things may look presently bleak to you... you are different. There are vishaps scattered wide in these lands, waiting for the return of their kings. Having you back, sensing that your authority is complete and that you are healthy, even if limited to a human form... there is no other light of hope that could shine brighter to them. This light is what they seek.◞

Dáinsleif turns to the precipice thereafter and walks a couple of steps farther and closer to its edge. Celestial eyes close anew to focus as sapphire flames answer his call immediately, engulfing his form entirely so he can fly forward a couple of meters. He turns again, gloved hand extends towards Neuvillette in invitation to follow. ◜Long enough they have dwelt in darkness without their king, but you can interrupt that time with your presence now and bring them hope that they may live at peace knowing that they have guidance now— O' Leviathan.◞
