Another season of anime is upon us an i am surprised by how much I've been enjoying it. Like, this year, so far, is on of the best in recent memory. It feels like that we’ve finally found a bit of normalcy after the Great Plague the still continues to Plague. It’s been some time since I've written one of these, mostly because there wasn’t anything that’s really caught my eye, but this season, i ended up following a decent amount of shows. So, for the first time in probably years, i wanted to take some time and give a heads up to the content on my ever-growing list of anime recommendations this season. There might be a few from last on here, too, because some of those were really good, too. My Dress Up Darling, I'm looking at you!
Uncle From Another World
Tumblr media
Isekai Ojisan was one that i was curious about for a bit. I am a passing fan of the manga and have been following it for years. I didn’t see how that thing would translate to TV but, i must say, i am happily incorrect. Uncle is f*cking hilarious. I think that the actual kineticism of animation lends itself to the slapstick and exaggerated humor of those old comic panels. This thing was made for top quality animation and, so far, that’s exactly what we’re getting. This sh*t ain’t Mappa, UFOtable, or Madhouse levels fluid but it’s much better than it has any right to be, making this one of the better looking shows of the season so far.
Vermeil in Gold
Tumblr media
Vermeil is a mixed bag for me so far. The manga is rather action packed and has a bombshell of a main heroine but, so far, the show is a little lacking. It’s gorgeously animated, it have to be to capitalize on the sex-in-heels that is Vermeil, but the plot is cliche as f*ck. It does get better, recently there have been a few revelations in the book that have kept my attention, but that doesn’t fee like something we’ll get to in one season, which is concerning. Vermeil is a slow burn and it’s wildly derivative of the content coming out today. I’m a fan of the manga so I'm trying my best to hang on but i can’t see this thing picking up enough steam to keep me interested for an entire season. It' a shame because this feels like a throwback anime from the late Nineties or early Aughts. I miss that sh*t. Still, the show is mad pretty to look at, not even going to lie about that.
Call of the Night
Tumblr media
Song of the Night Walkers is everything i hoped it would be. It’s animated beautifully, has a spot on voice cast, and looks unique enough to stand out as pure art. I love this show but i was already going into it as a fan of the book. It was a soft sell for me to tune into Nazuna and Kou’s weekly midnight madness but then to see this thing delivered with such attention to detail? Bro, if Overlord didn’t exist, this one would be my anime of the season, easy. It’s wild to say that out loud because i can’t stand Dagashi Kashi at all and Call is written by the same author. That said, i am a sucker for vampires so that might play into it a little bit. Probably.
Harem in the Labyrinth of Another World
Tumblr media
So this is the one that is rather... polarizing for me. I am a massive fan of the manga version of Slave Harem. I don’t think i like the show all that much, though. The preview of this show made the animation look amazing. Roxanne was throttling some jobber monster and i was taken aback by it’s fluidity. She was properly thicc and properly deadly. That was dope. The first three episodes of this show have no Roxanne and even less of that high quality action. I remember that it took a while for the manga to catch up and start doing things but, after three episodes, dude just bought her. That means they’re wither about to cut out a ton of content to get the plot rolling, world building stuff like the buying of their house or the explanation of the other Labyrinths, or they won’t and this thing is going to be a slog with dog tits occasionally. Like, there is no reason why the murder of all those bandits should have been so underwhelming but it was.
Danmachi IV
Tumblr media
I was a massive shill for the first season of this show. It was animated with care and really resonated on a character level. I remember watching Bell overcome that Minotaur and feeling thing about it. Like, i legit had a moment and, to this day, every time i see that sh*t, it hits me right in the feels. I have not felt the same about this show since then. I’ve watched every season, every special, and while they are entertaining, this series has never been able to capture the same intensity i felt in that one episode from so long ago. It’s wild to say that out loud because i generally enjoy these characters. Hell, my favorite one, Haruhime, was the catalyst of the principal conflict for and was added at the end of, season two. I still don’t care. I’m watching season four more because I'm basically committed at this point as opposed to actually enjoying the show anymore. We’re only one episode into season IV at the time of this essay so we’ll see how this shakes out.
Black Summoner
Tumblr media
This one was a surprise. I did not expect Kuro no Shoukanshi to get an adaption. I literally JUST picked this manga up, read the first four chapters, and then powered through the rest over the course of three days. It’s exceptional and i highly recommend getting into it. I was literally going to write a whole essay about my love for this book and then, quite by accident, i stumbled on the anime. It is top tier. The animation, the characterization, the world building; All of it is on point. We’re three episodes in so far and i am having the best time with it.
The Devil is a Part-Timer II
Tumblr media
Listen, the first season was a surprise for me. I ended u enjoying ti way more than i thought i would and was mad bummed out that it never got the return it earned. Like, that first season earned a second and then nothing. For years. All of a sudden, there’s this resurgence of shows that died a painful death. I got a second season for Tanya the Evil and even BLEACH is coming back to finish what Kubo couldn’t in the manga. I’ve only watched one episode so far, there’s two available, but this thing feels like it hasn’t lost a step. Part-Timer was one of my favorites when it aired the first time and, so far, this one is stacking up to be just as endearing.
Overlord IV
Tumblr media
Of the top, Overlord IV is my “must see.” I love Ainz and his rag tag band of misfit monsters. I’ve loved them since the very beginning all those years ago. Literally anytime there is an adaption to be released, I'm on it, even if the quality is a little lacking. Lord Momunga and Rimuru Tempest have that in common, actually. Season II was a bit of a let down, if i recall, but IV is ramping up to be something special. We’re three episodes in and i am having a goddamn blast. The first episode was a little rough around the edges in terms of animation, most episodes coming back from such a long hiatus tend to be, but this show has continued to get better with each, successive, outing. We Albedo fans are eating good!
That’s it for the current Summer season of anime. There are a few that i am still curious about but haven’t officially started to watch. Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer, The Maid I Hired Recently Is Mysterious, and Lycoris Recoil all look interesting and i might pick them up as the season progresses. We’ll see. I already have a full plate with eight shows on the watch list. That’s the most I've had in probably a decade. However, this entire year has been solid as f*ck for anime and i wanted to just highlight a few standouts that have made an impression since the Winter season.
Spy x Family
Tumblr media
Its rare that i say this but the hype for Spy x Family is real as f*ck. I mean, Yor replaced Marin as the “It Girl” fairly quickly but the show, itself, matched Sono Bisque in quality, too. I was mad surprised by how much i ended up enjoying this thing and i wanted to drop it after the first episode! I am so glad i didn’t because this thing turned out to be one of the best anime i have ever had the pleasure of experiencing.
My Dress Up Darling
Tumblr media
Look, i loved this show, alright? It’s adorable, gorgeously animated, and the sweetest f*cking thing I've seen since Ore Monogatari. Most people don’t know this about me but i am a sucker for a cute love story, man. I’ve been a closest CLAMP fan for decades and absolutely adore Chi from Chobits. Marin gives her a run for her money as top tier dandere material. Plus, i mean, the narrative is so endearing. It captures what it feels like to be so youthful and energetic about life. The passion Gojou and Marin have for their hobbies mirrors my own when it comes to writing and art. I absolutely identify with that.
Skeleton Knight In Another World
Tumblr media
Gaikotsu Kishi-sama, Tadaima Isekai e Odekake-chuu got an anime adaption and it was everything i dreamed of. It feels a lot like TenSura but i am fine with that, I love me some Slime which makes it very easy to love me some Bones. I generally enjoyed the cuts and changes made to the narrative i remember from the manga, too. It’s the same plot just kind of remixed a little bit, to make it more palatable to a wider audience. In all honesty, I'm a little surprised this one didn’t have more backlash because there are some notes that can be seen as problematic here in the States. Hopefully, we get a second season with this one because i rather enjoyed my time with Skeleton Knight.
It’s as if the new year started and Japan decided to drop a constant blaze of hot fire. I mean, these three are just the cream of the crop for me but there are a ton of other shows that i ended up checking out, most of which I'll circle back around and finish later. Summer Time Rendering, The Executioner and Her Way of Life, The Rising of the Shield Hero II, Life With an Ordinary Guy Who Reincarnated Into a Total Fantasy Knockout, Bastard!!, and I’m Quitting Heroing, all could have made this short list but i wanted to highlight these three specifically because, goddamn, were they excellent! And the year isn’t even over! I mentioned the return of my darling Tanya Degurechaff and Ichicgo Kurosaki, but Mappa is putting something special together for their Chainsaw Man adaption and i cannot wait! 2022 just might go down as one of the best years in anime, ever!

Sunday 22/8/21 - Media Recommendations #16: Top 3's of Right Now
In terms of new media to recommend this week, there is none. So this week I'm gonna do a bit of a recap/best of media thing. From the categories of Music, Anime, and Videogames, I'm gonna list my top 3 of right now.
What do I mean by Top 3 of Right Now? Well, personal taste in consumable media is very malleable and subject to change over time. So today, I'm gonna quickly highlight what I can declare my Top 3 Favourite Songs, Anime Series, and Videogames are, as the Mitchell of August the 22nd, 2021.
Some of these things I'm recommending I will have discussed in a previous Media Recommendations post, but my discussion of each of the things I talk about today will be very short. So without further ado, let's start with music.
● Top 3 Favourite Songs
▪︎3rd: Caramelldansen - Caramella Girls
Tumblr media
I can't really explain in words why I like this song so much, but it's just really good. I am not fluent speaker of Swedish, so I do not understand much of anything in the lyrics, but that's the magic of good music, you don't have to understand. If a song bops hard enough, the lyrics can be complete nonsense and still make worldwide charts even outside their native tongue. Caramelldansen also manages to capture that quintessential excitable weaboo nerd energy that I've come to accept is definitely part of my being.
This spot was the hardest to place out of any other placing in this post. There was about 6 songs I could declare as being my 3rd favourite song of all time, but at the very second I'm writing this, midnight on Sunday, I decided that Caramelldansen is my third favourite song.
▪︎2nd: Foolish Heart - Nyanners
Tumblr media
One thing that will always make me enjoy a song is a funky beat. Music that just pumps and jams. Foolish Heart is fun to groove to and there's not much more to it. I also have a soft spot for bitter-sweet lovesongs, and there aren't many songs I know that are as bitter about the sweetness of love than this. I follow the artist who does this song on many of her socials and I was a fan of it the second it came out, and it will probably stay in my regular rotation for a long time.
Honourable Mentions:
Old 45s - Chromeo
A Thousand Miles - Vanessa Carlton
Mr Blue Sky - ELO
Mansion Party - Ninja Sex Party
Roundabout - Yes
▪︎1st: I Want You - Savage Garden
Tumblr media
I had actually heard this song a bit when I was much younger, but it was only recently I became obsessed with it. It is the song used in the closing credits during JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 4, and I instantly fell in love with it. It's just so funky and goes so damn hard. It's a soft song, but also very powerful. The vocals are so smooth and the instruments are so sexy. It's been my favourite song for many years in a row now, and I think it's gonna keep that number 1 spot for a while longer yet.
● Top 3 Favourite Anime Series
▪︎3rd: Darling in the Franxx
Tumblr media
Darling in the Franxx just vibed with me on an emotional level. My very soul was touched by how much love this anime exudes. Studio Trigger are known foremost for their intense action and over the top characters, and sure this anime has those in spades. For someone who hasn't watched it, it may appear to be a cosmic mecha anime, but in fact, it is a romance story first. I can't really explain it well, but Darling in the Franxx just punches you right in the soul with how much emotion there is. It is a beautiful anime.
▪︎2nd: Food Wars - Shokugeki no Soma
Tumblr media
There's just something fun about rooting for a snarky protagonist who is overconfident. Especially when, most of the time, they are precisely big enough for their boots. Food Wars is a complete 3 course dinner that fills many different niches of anime. It's a lesson in many different cultures, it is food porn, it's a battle shonen, it even has light romance, but never lets that take centre stage over the journey of the protagonists. I'm admittedly a lover of tasteful fanservice here and there, and Food Wars delivers just the right amount of echi to entertain those into it, but no more than necessary. Food Wars is just... a lot. And it's great.
Honourable Mentions:
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku o!
Dagashi Kashi
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime
Log Horizon
▪︎1st: Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood
Tumblr media
FMA is just such a full package. It has a fun and interesting cast of characters. A complex and vast setting that is neither overexplained nor underexplained. A cast of villains that are all unique and the perfect balance of sympathetic to hateable. And most importantly, it does not outstay its welcome. I was very much considering putting JoJo's Bizarre Adventure up here, but the issue is that like, many other series, a series can be too long. A good anime has to be long enough to sink your teeth into, but if drags on for too long, it can become exhausting. FMA spends the perfect amount of time building up the plot and ends where it should. Edward and Alphonse Elric are the perfect dynamic duo, and every character has such fun designs and personalities. I could blab on for ages on why I love Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, and I have in a previous post. So go search that up in my pinned post if you want a longer breakdown. It is an anime MUST WATCH.
●Top 3 Videogames
▪︎3rd: Super Smash Bros Ultimate
Tumblr media
The very idea of Super Smash Bros is something that appeals to gamers everywhere. A suite of characters from all over gaming that are all playable in one huge game. You get to play that classic "my favourite character could kick your favourite character's butt" in real time. I'm not a big fighting game guy, but Smash has a very accessible jumping off point, simple controls and a system of combat that's only really as deep as you need it to be. Smash Bros is also a very important game to me socially, since I owe all my current closest friends to meetings I had interacting with the competitive scene. I used to be really into competitive Smash too, and Smash Ultimate in particular had a fairly balanced cast, in that if you were committed enough, you could dominate with any character. But even if I've grown exhausted with that scene, and only ever play the game casually now, I owe a lot to this series.
▪︎2nd: Animal Crossing New Horizons
Tumblr media
As of right now, Animal Crossing is not a game I play.... at all. But for the few months after the game released, ACNH was a religious dedication. I'm in a pretty shitty place these days. Can't see friends, can't even go to work, the world is falling apart as our leaders can't get Covid under control. But while I was playing ACNH, it brought structure and purpose back into my life for a while. I had villagers depending on me, museum collections to complete, flowers to breed, an island to transform into my vision of a nice place to live. It was nice. This number 2 spot might be taken by a different game in the future, but this year, Animal Crossing New Horizons was a very important game for me.
Honourable Mentions:
The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess
Pikmin 3
Jackbox Party Pack (the whole series)
Shovel Knight Treasure Trove
Pokémon Soul Silver
▪︎ 1st: The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild
Tumblr media
Despite Zelda being a huge part of my identity, I didn't actually get into the series until my mid teens. By that point, most of the later games were very formulaic and linear. And sure that can make for a very compelling story and experience, but BotW just threw that idea out the window. Breath of the Wild is a game you can just get lost in. Spend an hour just dicking around in the middle of nowhere and it's a blast just to move around. The world is tranquil, and also exciting. The game is gorgeous and fun to play and there's just too much to talk about. I've played the game from start to finish at various levels of completion about 5 times now, (one playthrough being a 2 hourish speedrun to the final boss) and every playthrough I found new locations, puzzles, interactions that I never encountered before. It's a game that just matched my being perfectly and I doubt a game will leave an impact like that for many years to come.

Writing Tip: Slice of Life and Conflict
There’s this notion that slice-of-life type stories do not have conflict or that there is no plot to them. Which may be true for some, arguably, but I think on the balance you’ll find that even very simple stories may have more conflict than it seems at first blush.
Why is this important? Because I think studying slice-of-life stories can yield some really interesting lessons about plotting -- lessons you can apply to your own work whether you’re writing action-packed thrillers or quiet little coffee shop AUs.
All of this occurred to me one day as I was watching Dagashi Kashi.
Tumblr media
This is an adorable and utterly silly little anime where ostensibly almost nothing happens -- yet it still manages to be interesting and engaging. How does that work? Let’s find out.
First, the premise:
Kokonotsu (Coconuts) is a teenager whose father wants him to inherit the family business, a candy store that’s been in the family for generations. Hotaru is the heir of a major sweets manufacturer who arrives at the shop with the intention of getting Coconuts’s father to work for her family’s company. He strikes a deal with her: He’ll consider the job offer if she can convince his son to take over the family business.
Along for the ride are Coconuts’s best friend, To, and his sister Saya (who is harboring a long-time crush on Coconuts).
It’s a quiet anime, but this premise is already rife with conflict. There’s the conflict between Coconuts and his father, who’s frequently coming up with excuses and sneaky ways to trap his kid into watching the store for him. There’s sexual tension between Coconuts and Saya, and also between Coconuts and Hotaru (who is probably too oblivious to realize it). There’s the question: “Will Coconuts decide to take over the shop after all?”
But the episodes themselves are...not very dramatic. Take a peek at the way the episodes are summarized on Wikipedia:
Kokonotsu and To try to play with spinning top style toys called "beigoma," only to smash them into Kokonotsu's foot. Later, the two are joined by Hotaru, and then Saya, as they begin a battle royale with beigoma. Later, Hotaru reminisces about an old dagashi shop that she used to visit when she was a child.
Or:
Hotaru arrives at the Shikada shop (san Yō) and continues her eccentric and sexually oblivious sweets-related behavior, culminating with her passing out from drinking a non-alcoholic candy beer mix. Kokonotsu later meets with Saya and Hotaru meets up with them while playing with candy that can also function as a whistle. She then spins a tale relating to the snack; Saya believes it is nonsense, but Kokonotsu catches on that it is allegorical and also implies that Hotaru's ditzy antics may not be completely sincere. Saya defuses the situation when she imagines all the sweets she could get for free if Kokonotsu were to succeed the shop. The three then play Menko into the evening as Saya stuns both Kokonotsu and Hotaru with instances of beginner's luck.
Tumblr media
On a day-to-day basis, each episode only obliquely deals with its core conflicts. What the episodes are really about is pretty much the kids doing basic summertime activities and Hotaru doing her dead-level best to win Coconuts over to the magical world of dagashi (basically cheap snack food) which she is...bizarrely and comically infatuated with.
Hotaru’s character is the primary driving force of the show, especially in the beginning. She’s eccentric and over-the-top and there is inherent tension in every scene she’s in simply because she tends to obliviously blunder through social situations. You get the feeling that her upbringing was quite sheltered. But she is deeply knowledgeable and passionate about dagashi, and she endeavors to convert Coconuts over to that same level of passion. From her perspective it seems pretty obvious: She thinks that dagashi is AMAZING, and if he could just see how amazing it is, too, there’s no way he would ever NOT take over the family business.
For his part, Coconuts doesn’t seem to care all that much about dagashi, but as the story unfolds and episodes continue it becomes clear that he knows more about it than he originally let on -- he’s evidently paid a lot of attention to this shop he claims not to care about. He’s also very interested in Hotaru, which definitely has nothing to do with her big breasts. because she’s such an interesting person.
What makes the story interesting enough to watch:
The sexual tension (I’m personally rooting for Saya)
Wondering what crazy new random factoid Hotaru (or Coconuts) will come up with today to relate real life to dagashi
Wondering how it’ll all turn out in the end. Will Coconuts take over the shop? Will he actually be happy if he does so? Is he actually just displaying this sudden interest because of Hotaru, or is Hotaru actually just giving him a reason to be who he was all along?
That shit is really interesting. It’s also proof that plot and conflict don’t have to be “big” to be enjoyable to watch. No one is going to die as a result of Kokonutsu’s choice. His decisions won’t really impact the world in any meaningful way. But it’s important enough that we care, for the same reason that all of the other minutiae of our own lives is important to us. Our lives are made up of tiny dramas and inconsequential decisions that are only important to us, and even only important in fleeting glimpses. And there’s value in telling those stories.
Tumblr media
So here’s the takeaway for writers:
Create characters who want things, and give them motives that are in conflict with one another. Hotaru wants Kokonotsu to fall in love with dagashi the way she is, so he’ll take over the shop. Saya doesn’t even like sweets, but she wants Kokonotsu to take over the shop so that he’ll stay in their village rather than move away. This makes her allies with Hotaru despite their being romantic rivals. (Saya also really respects Hotaru’s intelligence and bold nature and they genuinely like each other as people, which is refreshing). Kokonotsu wants a life more glamorous and adventurous than what he has - but maybe Hotaru is the key to that? You get the point.
Plot happens when people want things that they can’t have right away. The things they do to get those things, or to avoid other things, creates the story arc. Kokonotsu has ambitions, but those ambitions are called into question when he starts to have a genuinely good time running the family shop. What does he really want? Who is he really? He’s going to have to change as a result of his changed circumstances, and that creates plot.
Conflict doesn’t have to mean arguments or fighting. It’s just what happens when two people with their own motives and goals collide. Consequences can be as simple as embarrassment or disappointment. Small-scale conflict is still valid and engaging.

Anime Summer 2019 Final Impressions + Plans for Fall
Tumblr media
Summer sure was the hottest season of the year yet, it was an extremely unbearable hell, but that aside, there were lots of things this season, had some really sweet vacations, I’m back on school studying fine arts, and of course, all the good anime shows I watched.
Though, I must say, Fridays this season were my least favorite because they’re so packed with a lot of shows to watch, things get a lot worse when I have school now and I wouldn’t even have the time to watch everything after arriving at home at 3 PM.
Now that the Summer season is coming to a close, we’re finally moving on to Fall and the upcoming lineup is definitely the hottest yet, and most importantly: My birthday is this Friday, October 4th, and I’m going to become 20 years old, so I hope y’all don’t disappoint me with the birthday messages and potential surprises (which I’m always looking for ;-;).
Since it’s my 20th birthday, it’s a big milestone for me and I hope I get to activate my moral superiority, and if I see any of you whiny crybabies say some negative shit about things I really hold dear the most in my life, you’re gonna be hella sorry. 🙂💢
Ahem, excuse my weird behavior right there. Anyways, before we talk more about my birthday presents and everything, let’s talk about the shows I watched this Summer!
WARNING: This post contains spoilers for “Granbelm.” (About time I had discussed something with spoilers, it’s been forever)
Tumblr media
1.- Girls’ Frontline Healing Chapter: This is the anime I’ve been dying to watch and it finally came out... albeit with a little surprise: It’s in full Chinese! Dub and all!
I guess it makes sense they released it on full Chinese on BiliBili (Think of it as China’s equivalent of NicoNico or something) because it’s a Chinese game, but even Azur Lane, which it’s a Chinese game too, is huge in Japan now (Sorry Kancolle, you have sunk) that its upcoming anime is a full-fledged 30 minute TV series on national Japanese TV. But even so, the Chinese dub so far is relatively fine.
The series has even spawned two Grand Theft Auto dubbed parodies (1, 2) and they lead me to create my own parody using Team Fortress 2 sound clips, there should be more parodies like these!
Anyways, the wait for this series has absolutely been worth it and can’t wait to watch the Japanese dub!
10/10 - Rank: S++ - 100%
2.- The Case Files of Lord El-Melloi II: All I can think of this series is: This is the perfect definition of a Nasuverse with multiverse and different incarnations of some characters a la comic books, (By that I mean there’s characters from Fate/Apocrypha like Caules and Flat,  for example. All within the realm of the Stay Night/Zero continuity (?)) having some MCU-styled worldbuilding or something. (Okay, maybe I’m going too far with these childish meaningless comparisons, it’s just that I want the Nasuverse to be something other than standalone universe after standalone universe)
Now, me personally, having never read the novels, I did enjoy the series as it is, but it does get somewhat problematic that the first half is anime original while the second half is adapted from the novels for non-readers. It’s really weird how they decided to make the series half anime original half adaptation. This is beyond for me to call it “Semi-original” (I usually use this term for anime series based on intellectual properties but have a completely original storyline, such as Danganronpa 3 and Katsugeki Touken Ranbu).
Here’s a helpful timeline made by Karoshi to help you where the anime fits within the Case Files LN series.
Moving on, the animation is really great, the opening is awesome and with the instrumental only theme, it feels as if I’m watching a Netflix or HBO show, which is really neat. TROYCA did a good job on the visuals, the actions scenes and everything, they’re replicating the Ufotable style nicely.
Everyone must be like “A breath of fresh air after the fuckery we had with Fate/Apocrypha and Fate/Extra Last Encore” or 4chan people still hating on Case Files, sure, but I won’t really acknowledge it because I don’t care about Apocrypha and Last Encore anymore, but I will always defend them no matter what. I may have not read the Apocrypha LNs but there’s no reason to call the anime crap for no reason, and with Last Encore, I have played the original Fate/Extra game and while I was surprised and mad that it was a completely different story, in the end, the story is still close to the game and it’s an interesting alternate take on the Fate/Extra story. You can’t convince me otherwise, so get out of my sight, please.
I really hope this is the last time I rant about recent adaptations of different Fate series, because for me, Fate is a franchise that shouldn’t be disserviced on something like this, not even from the most dedicated Fate or general Type-Moon fans. (except the 2006 series because it aged like crap; Same with the MCU and other big franchises, inb4 Karoshi and everyone else crucifies me for stupid statements like these. Except Karoshi flat out told me he doesn’t use Tumblr at all to even read this post, so I’m glad)
Tumblr media
Case Files may be over, but there’s another Fate series coming out this Saturday...
9/10 - 93% - Rank: A++
3.- Dumbbell Nan Kilo Moteru: Having dropped out of the gym days prior, I immediately felt bad for doing so and watching the series made my desire to go back to the gym grow even more, though I don’t think I would have liked to given that I have school now and wouldn’t have time to have my break at all. At least the series did show exercises I can do at home. Even if I spent 1 year at the gym, I still have a fat belly despite having a decently fit body. Somebody help me. ;_;
I just realized I’m more like Hibiki, she works out but then she still eats a lot of fat afterwards. 😅
I’d definitely recommend this show for people who want to workout either at the gym or occasionally at home. This has some pretty good fan service, comedy and over-the-top muscles galore.
8.5/10 - 87% - Rank: A+
4.- Danmachi S2: I wasn’t fond of the beginning arc in a sense I didn’t want to see Bell suffer, but then the next arc is just way better (Not gonna lie, I’d really love to go in the City of Lust with the Ishtar Familia. 🤤)
After One-Punch Man 2 and even Okaa-san Online, Danmachi is and continues to look one of the better looking anime I’ve recently watched. There’s a bit of weird quality errors here and there, but overall, the visuals still look impressive. Hell, even the opening looks amazing (though Case Files beat it as the best looking opening of the season).
After the series ended, a new OVA AND season 3 got announced for 2020. I’m glad I won’t have to wait for another 2 or 4 years. For 2 years, I would have to get a new season of Sword Oratoria like in 2017, but Sword Oratoria is rather forgettable, so I’m sticking with the base series, instead. Anyways, looking forward for more Danmachi next year.
8/10 - 84% - Rank: A
5.- Fire Force: Even though I never saw Soul Eater, but even so, this series is interesting, it had a strong start but the last few episodes, the animation has been TERRIBLE. The way the characters move, the flow and everything is just god damn slow.
It’s a damn shame how David Production of all studios is getting a troublesome series with decaying animation quality or something. Even JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure and Cells at Work had decaying qualities or something.
Since this is a two-cour series (for the better or for worse), I hope the animation would get better, but if it continues to be the way it is, I don’t really know what to say, and maybe David Production shouldn’t have picked this series up in the first place, Bones should have adapted Fire Force so it can give Soul Eater vibes, but I guess they were too busy with Mob Psycho 100 and My Hero Academia. Even so, the series still had some decent moments.
One thing worth pointing out is that the ending theme, veil by Keina Suda, reminded me of the song シャルル... But then I discovered that シャルル  was made by Keina Suda too, that took me by surprise.
7.5/10 - 75% - Rank: B
6.- Tejina Sempai: I wasn’t much convinced on wanting to see the series before it came out, but when I’ve seen crossover fan arts with the titual character and Hotaru Shidare from Dagashi Kashi, even pKjd’s tweet about it, got me interested, I saw the first episode and I loved it, I had laughed a lot on it, but like on the second half of the show, the series has kinda lost me and couldn’t even find it funny anymore, a little bit, but it wasn’t working out for me anymore.
Animation wise is a little decent, not as utterly poor but the showoverall is okay.
To add insult to injury, this is the one project artist Sky-Freedom has recently dedicated to make porn pictures on his Patreon and sell a doujin of it.
Long story short: Sky-Freedom was making a JK oneshota series on Patreon, but then on early July 2019, he was accused of plagiarism from another artist for one image (See here; and yes, I made this Twitter account to protest, but it didn’t work like I wanted), hence he cancelled the JK oneshota series and has since moved on making doujins of Azur Lane, and of course, Tejina Sempai.
Basically, an artist I’ve grown to hate has moved on to make porn of Tejina Sempai on his Patreon and a doujinshi. Sure, what he did about copying another artist and make money of it from Patreon was shitty, but since he won’t make that JK oneshota series anymore and can’t even care for his new stuff, hence why I hate him now (though not really because I’m still curious to know what he’s doing).
Sorry if I went a little bit off-topic, but this is the most important thing I wanted to address, something associated with Tejina Sempai, whether it’s a good thing or a bad thing.
7/10 - 71% - Rank: B-
7.- Okaa-san Online: This one I kinda have grown to have quite mixed feelings about this series.
In one hand, it recreates Pochi’s art style nicely but it doesn’t even come close, everything else is rather nice, but on the other hand, the poor animation kinda kills the interest and enjoyment of the series quite a bit. It seems like part of JC Staff has gotten worse in animation talent than One-Punch Man 2, but it certainly won’t top OPM2.
As for the story, writing and characters, there isn’t much for me to talk about, and it’s its nature to have characters with terrible puns as their names and such.
However, it does get a bit thought provoking about my relationship with my mom, but I wouldn’t like to get too personal about it (and it’s none of your business anyways).
The best girl of course is Mamako, not only she’s a genuinely good mother, someone I really shouldn’t fight so bad (I’m worse than her son, Masato), but also she’s a legit good MILF. 👌
Okay okay, let’s not get too perverted again as I briefly did at Danmachi with the Ishtar Familia arc or something and let’s just move on to the score.
Also, why would HorribleSubs refer this series as “Okaa-san Online”? It certainly has a long ass title, but calling it “Okaa-san Online”? Really?
After Okaa-san Online, can we please get an Ane Naru Mono anime but with a better studio, please? Maybe it could be a hentai based on the NSFW version or it could be a TV series based on the SFW version, either is fine but give me something, please!
6/10 - 63% - Rank: C-
8.- Granbelm: I was honestly feeling super mixed around the first few episodes, and at times I even felt like dropping this, but I never drop any anime I wasn’t feeling interested, but then the second half of the series has been getting me interested now, especially when the series gave me the best anime villains ever:
Tumblr media
Anna Fugo: The “obsessed for power” type of villain with a terrific performance by Yoko Hikasa.
Tumblr media
Suishou Hakamada: The “servant of the most powerful boss, but the boss sucks, so screw this!” type of villain with a mysterious background, with a voice ranging from calm but terrifying to extreme when she gets angry, provided by Aoi Yuuki. Around episode 12, here’s a surprising info bomb: Suishou out of the blue reveals that she participated and won every single Granbelm for a thousand years to become the Princeps or something.
Another con I have to mention is the weak sound design. When the fight scenes happen, the mechas flying, the strikes and everything sound really off, they don’t sound like loud engines blasting off or even metal clashing very strongly or something.
I must say, even if the story wasn’t the most convincing I’ve ever watched but it has some redeeming qualities like the villains, the animation was pretty good. Certainly doesn’t involve sakuga, but at least it was pretty decent.
6.5/10 - 67% - Rank: C+
Overall:
Tumblr media
I know Okaa-san Online should have been last for the poor animation and my lower score, but Granbelm was always destined to be in that spot because I was the least interested at it.
I have a history of rigging my own scores, so I don’t make the rules.
Spring 2019 ongoing:
Fruits Basket: The first season has ended, and now we’re gonna get season 2 around 2020. I’m excited to see how the story goes. (And before you tell me to read the manga, I’ll pass and I’m gonna wait and see how will the adaptation goes)
Kimetsu no Yaiba: Episode 19 and with the series ended, might as well say this now but this is totally my Anime of the Year, no denying it. I’m glad it’s not the end for Kimetsu no Yaiba yet, there’s going to be a movie of the Infinite Train arc... inb4 it becomes another vaporware like the Katsugeki Touken Ranbu movie or, hell, even Girls’ Work, and things get worse with the tax fraud on Ufotable, if that’s anything to go by.
They still have Heaven’s Feel III coming out in 2020, so there’s a pretty good chance that Ufotable can still work it out with the Kimetsu no Yaiba if they can.
Tumblr media
Not quite a mediocre anime to give it a D or even an E like the past two seasons, in my opinion. Now, it’s finally the time to talk about my anticipated anime not only for the entire season in general, but for my birthday as well!
Anticipated:
1.- Azur Lane The Animation - October 3rd: I’m a big avid player of Azur Lane and I seriously can’t wait for the anime to come out! I don’t care if people are gonna compare this with the Kancolle anime, if it’s gonna be good, bad or worse than the Kancolle anime, etc. I just want to watch it, please!
October 3rd is just PAINFULLY a day close to my birthday, but you know what? I’m gonna watch the first episode on day 1 and then rewatch it on my birthday so I can be satisfied.
With the latest trailers, the anime looks impressive, it seems like the character designs are relatively close to the diverse art styles from the characters, but it’s still mixed in with a uniformal art style like Kancolle’s or something. Still nowhere near Chronicle Chain-tier, but it’s something.
This is definitely the one anime I’m super anticipated to watch and can’t wait to watch it, even if it’s an early birthday gift!
2.- Girls’ Frontline Healing Chapter (Japanese Dub) - October 4th: Yes yes, the series already exists, albeit for Chinese audiences with Chinese dub and all and I just reviewed it, but hey, this is the Japanese dub we’re talking about and I was growing as desperate as I was to watch the series. As to how these news came to be, I was scrolling down my timeline and saw the Crunchyroll news post about the series, I was like “Yooo, the Japanese dub is finally coming out!”, I looked at the post, read through and at the bottom, I saw the broadcasts:
Tokyo MX: every Friday during the 25:00 time slot beginning on October 04, 2019.
BS11: every Saturday during the 20:55 time slot beginning on October 05, 2019.
Yep, you read that right: October 4th. This is my biggest surprise I’ve seen yet, and the road for my birthday (at the time of writing this, Sept. 25th) keeps getting better and better!
I actually had thought it was gonna come out on Fall but I expected on late October at best, to coincide with the Chinese release’s late July release, but I never thought they would definitely go for my birthday of all dates.
3.- High Score Girl - October 4th/16th: Every time I watch this show, I seriously cannot stop smiling for how good this is, and I’m glad it’s back for a second season as my birthday gift.
But what’s strange is that the first 3 episodes are going to be on my birthday while the rest of the series will be on October 16th onwards, it’s a little odd but hey, I get to see the first 3 episodes of my birthday, it’s definitely worth it.
4.- Blackfox - October 4th: I haven’t heard anything new about this lately and I genuinely lost interest on it because the fact that it’s a theatrical movie in Japan left me a sour taste in my mouth. Well, I would still see the film eventually in some way, whether the film would come out on Mexico or torrents from the Blu-Ray release, but at the same time, it’s just the usual “Japan getting an anime movie first and it’s going to take forever for it to come out on Mexico or won’t at all.”
That is until on September 27th, I was randomly reading the Wikipedia page for Blackfox and I noticed that, get this: Crunchyroll is going to stream the film on October 4th! My interest on Blackfox has regained!
With that said about Blackfox being a movie and coming out on Crunchyroll on October 4th, looks like I’m going to have two movies in one birthday, one of them being a certain mentally ill prince of crime clown. Given that I’m going to have all morning watching all these other anime that are coming out in my birthday, I don’t think I’ll be able to watch Blackfox too in favor of Joker.
5.- My Hero Academia season 4 - October 12th: I’m surprised that My Hero Academia took a long lap between seasons, maybe we all needed a break from MHA coming out in every Spring, especially when there was another Shonen Jump series, Kimetsu no Yaiba, and the competition would sure be hot, I think Kimetsu no Yaiba might have been suffocated with MHA or vice versa, who knows really.
Anyways, we’re finally getting into the Eri arc and boy, seeing this arc animated is gonna be intense.
6.- Fate/Grand Order: Babylonia - October 5th: I don’t really understand what’s the appeal with Babylonia (and Camelot) in comparison to the other storylines from FGO before Epic of Remnant and Cosmos in the Lostbelt. And I didn’t even bother to look at English translations or even videos or transcripts of the chapter released in the NA version. Now that it’s getting animated, I’ll have to wait and see because what I like the most of these adaptations is seeing the VN-like scenarios come to life, or pretty much any other media I like seeing being brought to life in general.
Some things I do have to compliment about the Babylonia anime is that they released episode 0 in the actual game (and at the same time, simulcasts were released which begs the question: How the fuck were they able to get an episode of the Babylonia anime straight from the game?), and, unlike Azur Lane which it’s another mobage with an anime coming out this Fall, it uses a uniformal art style and it tries to replicate the Takeuchi art style. Granblue Fantasy is an exception because it’s only one artist who does literally every single character ever.
7.- BEASTARS - October 8th: This is the next project from the studio that brought Houseki no Kuni, Orange. Looking forward to more of their CG greatness. (Sanzigen will always hold a special place in my heart, though)
8.- Tokunana - October 6th: I was randomly lurking on Yuuichiro Higashide’s (Fate/Apocrypha, Danganronpa 3, Date A Live Fragment: Date A Bullet writer)  website and I saw “Tokunana”, I visited the website and it showed me the trailer first, it looked pretty interesting and for some reason I thought it was like an old series of sorts, but nope, it’s actually a new series.
The full English title is Special 7: Special Crime Investigation Unit, and given that I watch CSI, NCSI and Hawaii Five-0 very early in the mornings before I go to school, I’m definitely gonna get some vibes from these shows or something, and this show has a pretty stellar cast too.
9.- Granblue Fantasy: The Animation season 2 - October 4th: I genuinely had enjoyed the first season when it came out, the animation looked nice too, but now reading some reactions on the anime in general has given me a sour taste, I refuse to believe it’s bad or anything...
I’m surprised that they’re changing studios from A-1 to MAPPA, I wanted Cygames Pictures because supposedly they were supposed to make anime based on their properties themselves, why MAPPA of all studios?
Also, this is coming out in my birthday and I’m not sure if I asked for this, but I’ll take it.
10.- Psycho-Pass 3 - October 24th: With news about Psycho-Pass 3 flying around, I had to binge the series on my Spring break, and yes, even Psycho-Pass 2, everyone says that it sucks and whatnot, but for me honestly, it wasn’t even that offensively bad, it does suck that there wasn’t a lot of Kogami, but the storyline and everything wasn’t really that bad, at least the movie gave more Kogami, though. And speaking of familiar faces, it seems like only Shion and Sho are returning and this whole season has an all-new cast, I’m not sure how I feel about that.
Before Pscyho-Pass 3 comes out, I forgot there were the Sinners of the System film trilogy released earlier this year and I got to watch them all this past Sunday as of the publishing of this post. Speaking of the films, they were 1 hour each and I think they were a test on how will Psycho-Pass 3 work with 1-hour length.
The series will have 8 episodes consisting of 1 hour, I’m not really sure if I’m prepared for that, and now that I think about it, it’s going to feel like watching a Netflix show.
11.- Phantasy Star Online 2: Episode Oracle - October 7th: So a new PSO2 anime is apparently happening, but this time it seems like it’s definitely gonna be more serialized and actually taking place in the game’s universe, because the 2016 series had a lot of meta shit and it was just ridiculous, but even so, I loved it.
And that’s all of the anime I’m looking forward this Fall, don’t forget that my birthday is soon and I’m looking forward for your messages! I’m sure going to have a great time in my 20th birthday with Azur Lane, Girls’ Frontline, High Score Girl, Granblue Fantasy, Blackfox (if I have the time) The Blacklist (if I have the time) and Joker!

Winter 2018 Anime Season
What I’m watching:
Hakata Tonkatsu Ramens is easily my favorite new show of the season. I can’t think of anything else that even comes close. The show has very attractive character designs, cool music (that ending theme gives me Cowboy Bebop vibes), and an overall stylish, frenetic feel that puts me in mind of a less crazy Durarara!!. The show touches on some surprisingly dark topics but so far has never been exploitative and keeps a mostly lighthearted tone. The characters are a lot of fun, especially in the way they all connect and interact. It should also be noted that there is very obvious sexual tension between the two male leads, yet it doesn’t feel at all like fanservice or yaoi bait. Instead it feels like a natural part of their growing friendship. The whole cast is interesting. This has to be the nicest group of assassins, information brokers, and torturers I’ve ever seen. This is hands down the show I look forward to the most every week. At the top of my watch list.
Dagashi Kashi Season Two was a bit of a surprise. I didn’t realize season two was coming out now until it popped up on Crunchyroll. I was pretty excited too, because I really enjoyed season one and adored the heroine, Hotaru. I even have a figure of her. I was drawn to Hotaru because she was so entertaining. She’s beautiful, yes (easily one of the top five most beautiful anime ladies, in my opinion), but she’s funny, persistent, and big hearted. Okay, gushing about Hotaru aside, season two is a bit different. For one, the episodes are now half the length of regular anime episodes. This works okay, since season one typically had two self-contained stories per episode. Another difference is that the animation quality seems to have dropped a little. It’s not a huge deal, but it’s noticeable. The third thing is that the Hotaru fanservice has become a lot more overt, which is particularly disappointing for me as a fan of her character. Season one had some fanservice, yes (Hotaru has fairly large breasts), but it was more subtle and a lot funnier. Season two, inspired by the heaps and heaps of pervy Hotaru merchandise that’s come out since season one, has decided to focus a lot more attention on how bouncy her boobs can be. It’s annoying, but it doesn’t make the show unwatchable, so it still has a solid spot on my watch list.
Sanrio Boys is one of two cute, feel-good shows this season (I’ll get to the other one later). It’s basically a “cute boys doing cute things” show with BL undertones that is apparently sponsored by Sanrio, as each boy has a favorite Sanrio character that they’re associated with. The show could have gotten by on being cute and fluffy and I probably would have watched it that way just because I like cute things and have a fondness for Sanrio myself. Thankfully, the show puts in the extra effort to have likable, relatable characters with interesting back stories explaining their connections to their favorite Sanrio characters. A couple of these stories literally made me cry. The friendship between the five main characters is very sweet and comforting. I also have to wonder if some of the stuff in this show is meant to be one big metaphor for being a gay youth. The main character lives in shame and denial about his love of Sanrio because “boys shouldn’t like stuff like that”. He fears being rejected by his classmates, because he was made fun of and bullied in the past over his interests. He even tries to help another character avoid being “outed” as a Sanrio fan before realizing the other boy is open and unashamed about his hobbies. A big part of the series is about him growing to accept himself and the things he likes and gradually opening up to others about it. The theme of the show seems to be, “don’t try to deny who you are, be true to yourself even if that means some people will judge you and reject you”. That’s a very positive message cloaked in Sanrio product placement.
Darling in the Frankxx is this season’s garbage guilty pleasure show. It has attractive art, nice animation, excellent music (that ending theme is so. freaking, good.), an interesting setting, and some truly awesome mecha battle scenes. Which would all come together to make one of the top shows of the season, if the show didn’t have some seriously ridiculous and laughable fanservice that very badly distracts from all the cool stuff. Let me just describe the cockpit situation in these mechs. Each mech must be piloted by a pair of one boy and one girl (typical of shows like this, homosexuality doesn’t seem to exist in this world). The boy sits in the seat. The girl is positioned in front of him, facing forward, on her knees, with her ass in the air, practically shoved in the boy’s face. But it gets better! Weird metal handlebar-looking things are attached to the girl’s skin-tight outfit and spring up on either side of her ass for the boy to hold onto. All together, it literally creates the image of the boy riding the girl like a freaking motorcycle. Without even getting into how ridiculously impractical this setup is (wouldn’t the girl get extremely sore and uncomfortable while trying to stay on her knees on the hard metal cockpit floor during longer battles? Wouldn’t a hot girl’s barely-clothed ass in a teenage boy’s face be extremely distracting when he’s trying to fight monsters?), just the image alone is completely absurd. I could be extremely generous here and say the writers/animators were trying to create some sort of metaphor for how these kids are being exploited by the adults and how their budding sexuality relates to the mysterious process of becoming adults (the show strongly hints that they don’t simply grow naturally into adults). But... it looks like the boys are riding the girls like motorcycles, so nah, I’m not gonna be that generous. The show tries and fails to come across as a serious, thoughtful sci-fi story, which is a shame because it might have had more success in that area if not for the stupidity I’ve outlined above. For now, I’m still watching because it does actually have some good qualities that I enjoy. But it’s pretty much at the bottom of the list.
Killing Bites is another show with fanservice, but it does fanservice right. The chicks are badass (and none of them have the bodies of eleven year old girls, thank God) and, so far, all of them are totally okay with their skimpy clothes and actually seem to feel empowered by them. These ladies enjoy being sexy, and use it to their advantage. There was a problematic scene in episode five but it did reach a satisfying conclusion. The show is action-packed, with fun battles between (generally attractive) people who can transform into animal-human hybrids. The show has plenty of humor as well. It’s nothing too deep or tightly plotted, but it’s good brainless fun.
Dame X Prince Anime Caravan is a super cute and fun otome series, one of the most entertaining ones I’ve seen in a few years. This is primarily because the heroine is refreshingly practical and proactive. She’s not a simple audience-insert who gets passed around between the guys. Instead she’s a spunky, no-nonsense rural princess who is well aware of how absurd her situation is. The guys are such over-the-top caricatures that it’s hard to root for any of them to win her heart. What results is a rare otome series in which you’ll be much more interested in the heroine than any of her suitors. That’s not to say the guys are boring. They’re actually pretty fun characters, and their interactions with the princess are hilarious. The art is very pretty and the music is cute, making this a very watchable show.
School Babysitters is the other sweet, feel-good series I mentioned above. How you feel about this show will depend entirely on how you feel about children (or at least children in anime). The bulk of the series is about an orphaned teenage boy and his little brother, and the school where the older brother is allowed to attend for free if he works after school in the on-campus daycare room to help babysit the teachers’ children. It’s absolutely adorable and heartwarming and is designed to make you say, “Awww!” as often as possible. The show can be really funny at times, and can get surprisingly deep as well. One short scene was absolutely devastating to watch if you’ve ever lost a loved one (and probably even if you haven’t). It was just a quick, simple scene and yet it instantly had me crying my eyes out. Despite this, the general tone of the show is lighthearted and positive. A couple of the kids can get a little annoying (just like real kids...) but never to the point that you’ll want to turn it off. High on my watch list.
Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru Season Two is more enjoyable for me personally than season one. When writing about the first season, I mentioned that I wished the show had focused more on the sword battles and the action than on the cute slice of life stuff. Well, last year’s Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu must have quenched my thirst, because the sweet, funny antics of the sword boys in Hanamaru seem much more entertaining to me now. The art is of course very nice, as per usual. The backgrounds and outfits are still gorgeous. There’s still a healthy dose of poignant melancholy mixed in with the fluff (mostly dealing with the sword boys’ lingering loyalties to their former masters and their inability to change those masters’ fates despite being able to travel back in time). My favorite is Kiyomitsu, who paints his nails every day in an attempt to be cute, which would sound funny and a bit superficial if you didn’t know he was doing this because of his deep-seated fear of being rejected and abandoned by his new master. Despite these sad little moments, the show is by and large a sweet, comforting experience.

Colossalcon 2018 - Love Is in the Air: Recent Romance Anime
In this panel we presented a seasonal breakdown for past 1 1/4 years. Here are some of my favorite romance anime in each season.
Tumblr media
Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid is not a traditional romance anime but it does feature a well developed cast and some romantic tension. The family dynamic presented in this show is one of the series strength.
On the opposite end of the spectrum is Scum’s Wish. This anime lives up to its name. While it can be challenging to watch, the show does provide a very unique portrayal of romance.
Tumblr media
Next up is spring. This season featured one of my favorite romance anime. Tsukigakirei is polar opposite of Scum’s Wish. The show features a very sweet romance between two middle school students. The show also boasts strong animation and likable characters.
The other anime I want to discuss from this season is Anonymous Noise. This anime is flawed but still packs an emotional punch. The love triangle in this anime is very frustrating and the show lacks closure. Despite those problems I still enjoyed watching the show and I’m also reading the manga.
Eromanga-sensei and Saekano season 2 were also good. Saekano is one of my all-time favorite harem anime. Eromanga-sensei is enjoyable despite its trash reputation.
Tumblr media
Summer season featured two of the year’s funniest shows with Tsuredure Children and Gamers. Tsuredure Children is one of the best short anime, with episodes clocking in around 12 minutes. That show features a large cast but still gives most characters a chance to shine.
Gamers has a smaller cast, but manages to ship every character. The show boasts one of the most convoluted love polygons. The show is laugh out loud funny with some of the most memorable scenes. Unfortunately it ends in 12 episodes and there is little closure. Hopefully a second season is produced.
Love and Lies is another frustrating romance anime. I hated most of the characters in that show, so I didn’t enjoy the series. NTR is another anime I did not enjoy. This yuri series does not have any likable characters and is trash.
Last but not least I wanted to mention Welcome to the Ballroom. I really like this show as well as the manga, but I don’t really view it as a romance anime. It is a very good sports/performance anime.
Tumblr media
Fall 2017 showcased two of the best adult centered romance anime with MMO Junkie and Love is Like a Cocktail. Both anime showcased adult characters finding love, which sadly is not something often seen in anime.
Ancient Magus Bride highlighted one of the oddest relationships in anime with Elias and Chise. It is difficult to define their relationship. At times it feels more like father / daughter, but it quickly switches tones. The age difference between the characters is a bit strange. Elias can also be a tough character to sympathize with at points in the show.
Speaking of off-putting relationships, Blend-S manager is a creep. The show was still enjoyable despite disliking his character. Just Because was another unremarkable, but watchable romance anime. It does not have the best animation but I liked some of the characters.
Tumblr media
Wrapping this post with the winter 2018 season. This season had two notable romances with After the Rain and Takagi-san. Keeping with trend of uncomfortable relationships, After the Rain focuses on 17 year-old in love with her 45 year-old manager. The show handles this age gap with more class than Blend-S. This is another anime with a unique art style.
Takagi-san is a silly anime about middle school boy and girl. Despite his many attempts to best Takagi, male lead Nishitaka always ends up being the fool. There is romance vibes between the two main characters throughout the series.
A few other anime worth mentioning are Citrus and Dagashi Kashi 2. Citrus is another yuri trash show, though it is level or two above NTR. Dagashi Kashi 2 isn’t a traditional romance anime, but there are romantic moments sprinkled throughout the show.
Lastly I wanted to mention Card Captor Sakura Clear Card. The show has been slow developing, but there is still great chemistry with Sakura and Li. As a big fan of the original anime, any appearance of these characters is exciting.
