[Parents - Gwan (Kim) A-yeong & Gwan Chin-hwa]

Eunji’s mother, Kim A-yeong, was born in 1972 in Nam District, Gwangju. She worked as an actress since 1988 and had her breakthrough in 1989 with a lead role in a fantasy drama.

Gwan Chinhwa was born in 1972 in the same neighborhood as Ayeong. He was raised by his grandparents and is a born artist. He would go on to study computer science and get a job as an IT-Specialist.

The two of them had been friends ever since they could remember and this long lasting friendship would eventually turn into a romance. They got together in 1988 and started dating officially.

In 1990 Ayeong married Gwan Chinhwa and took on his surname Gwan. Both of them still pursuing their careers until 1992, when their daughter Gwan Eunji was born.

After their daughter was born both of them took a year off to take care of their baby girl. Both of them wanted to be involved in raising the girl. This being said, they resumed their careers but avoided working late and Ayeong didn’t film as many shows anymore.

On their daughter’s 10th birthday, the married couple planned a week in Disneyland in Paris. Sadly, they would never arrive. Their flight crashed due to complications and while Eunji survived, Ayeong and Chinhwa tragically did not. Chinhwa died on the scene and Ayeong would succumb to her injuries in the hospital only a few hours later.

{Orphanage - Caretakers & Friends}

After Eunji lost her parents she was put into an orphanage. In her first months she hated everything and everyone. She cried all the time and distanced herself from everyone.

However, the caretakers and other children in this orphanage were anything but the stereotype. With a lot of patience and some convincing they slowly started to crack open the shell of the young girl.

The orphanage has four caretakers and twenty children, including Eunji. And after opening up to them Eunji found her second family. The caretakers treat the children like their own and the kids started to feel like siblings to Eunji.

She is especially close to three boys, Gaeul, Hada and Iseul, and two girls, Areum and Chaewon. The six of them got really close and did everything together. They went to concerts, on picnic dates and also went out to party together. The five supported Eunji since the beginning. They actually came to her first concert and fansign. Eunji couldn’t be more grateful.

Over the years the six grew apart and eventually lost contact. But Eunji never stopped being grateful for the time she had with them. She mentioned them in an interview in 2020 and thanked them in hopes that they are watching.

Her caretakers, Chungcha, Daeun, Yejoon and Daeho, are still working in the orphanage and Eunji visits them once a month. She has made many donations to the orphanage and still loves going there. In a BTS Run Episode they actually visited the orphanage and took care of the kids.

Eunji is very grateful to have grown up with so much love and care. She also tells people that the stereotype of an orphanage doesn’t have to be true and that for her, it gave her all she needed after loosing her parents.
