yo so last week or smth i went to build a bear with my little relatives and when i saw chubby cubby (look it up you wont be disappointed) i fell in love, then i was struck with inspiration. so my chonky teddy bear and i hope you enjoy this lmao

warnings: heavy cursing, SPOILERS FROM S2 but not too specific in the bulleted fic? still be warned. other than that pretty mild, fluffy? yeah fluffy and probably ooc for black noir but whatevs

when news spread of Black Noir being in critical condition, a lot of internal questions were raised at Vought: who did this? was it an accident? was it on purpose? was it another supe? how can we market off this? etc

once crisis control handled the public nightmare that was social media and news outlets (special thanks to Cameron!), did the flood gates open

in the first few days, there were countless cards and money chip-ins for charity donations that Black Noir advocated for

i mean you could not take a shit without someone thrusting a card in your face and saying, "Wanna write something sweet to Noir so he gets better soon?"

hence came the little lie, "oh, i already got him something with a card. thanks tho"

you worked in the crime analysis department, so you did not have a close relationship with Black Noir personally

but that didn't mean you felt bad; i mean, critical condition? you had to give him something

and people at Vought would easily find out you lied and who knows what would happen then?

there are definitely some snakes in the grass if you know what i mean

but what would you get him? everyone else was giving cards and flowers and balloons. no doubt his hospital room is flooded with all those things

so while you're agonizing over what to get him because god forbid snakes figure out your "white" lie, you're stuck on babysitting duty for a friend's eight-year-old kid one day

while you're not too hip on what eight-year-old kids do in their spare time nowadays, you decide to take them to the ol' reliable of your childhood: the mall

as you both are walking around bored out of your minds do you see the answer to your agony: the holy golden glow of build-a-bear workshop

you have to drag the kid you're babysitting inside, but they dont put up a fight for long when they see a stuffed animal they like

unfortunately, you dont see anything you like, but you buy the kid your babysitting his bear (a frog dressed like Obi-Wan)

At the check out do you see another saving grace: "exclusive customizable bears online! order one today!!"

so the second you drop the kid off and you're at home, you immediately go incognito on your browser

you buy a stuffed (animal of your choice) and dress it up like Black Noir because build a bear is in an obvious partnership with Vought for younger consumer marketability

for the extra hell of it, you buy a "get well soon" shirt bc you thought how cute it would be to put it over the Black Noir getup

for the customization, on all 4 paws do you write: Black (front right) Noir (front left) For (back right) Ever! (back left)

you buy expedited shipping and when it finally arrives, you put on the get well soon shirt over the black noir outfit, but you stop from putting on the black noir helmet

why you didnt put on the helm was beyond you. maybe because you thought the sentimentality was stronger since you're recognizing he's still human beneath the suit??

who the fuck knows, anyway

you ask Ashley to give it to Noir (which took a lot of convincing, and a pricey meal for lunch).

funnily enough, you dont leave a card or any sign the gift was from you

when you're both outside in the back where there's literally not a single soul in sight, do you apologize

because its Black Noir, and of course he knew that was your gift

and then the most confusing fucking thing happens

he pulls out a motherfuckin build-a-bear which was your favorite animal (how did he know?) wearing a freakin "thanks a bunch" shirt

he holds it out to you; you're quick to snap out of whatever fucking dream this was and gingerly take it from him

then you start giggling, relieved and so bewildered because what the fuck???

Unlike how it usually goes around here, this pattern is mine. It’s my first time designing one so it may not be the best but I'm proud of it anyway. This version is on 14 count Aida and was done using ThreadworX 1154 Bradley’s Balloons, but the “cute” is completely customizable in any floss color/type that you want!

You can find this on my Etsy shop, where is is currently my only listing. I’m working on another pattern right now, but it’s pretty large and I still need to test stitch it before I can put it up, but keep your eyes out for some cool anthropology content.

If he’s grown attached to you, and considers you part of his family, you can bet that he’s going all out for your birthday.

The problem is, the narrator’s understanding of celebrations has always been a bit skewed. The cake is big enough to feed forty people. You stare at it in open astonishment. “Happy birthday, reader! I do hope you’re hungry, because I don’t generally eat.” He expects you to eat the entire thing yourself. Hope you’ve got some freezer space!

His gifts are either hit or miss. Depending on what sorts of things you like, and how long the narrator has known you, he nails it or misses the mark completely. No inbetween. 

Let’s say you have a passion for marine animals, just as an example. The narrator buys you three pounds of shrimp, while reciting facts he learned about them. You ask him to buy you a plushie next time.

Maybe you’re into a particular fandom, like Star Trek or Good Omens, or anything else. He’s much better at buying things in this context, because related items are specific and limited. Fandom related gifts are easier for him to understand.  

He tries very hard to acquire nice things for you. If he’s absolutely stumped, he may get you things related to his game. That’s how the two of you probably met, after all.

Pins, buttons, customizable name tags, stuff like that. He steers clear from any reassurance bucket he sees though. There’s such a thing as going too far, in his opinion.  

He hangs balloons up. If you’ve known him for more than a year, he tosses out the “Happy 12th Birthday Step-Niece” and gets some proper ones.

He doesn’t sing the happy birthday song, claiming that he can’t sing, and that the song is actually copyrighted and would get him in trouble.

“Make a wish, reader!” Meanwhile, the cake has enough candles that it looks like it could burst into flames any second. You quickly blow out the candles to save both of you from a ruined cake.

The celebration wraps up, and he gently pulls you to one side and says, “I’m very glad you’ve survived another year, reader. Life is difficult, but I’m very proud you’ve made it through another planetary rotation.”

Vehicle Overview

WOO! It’s been a minute since my last post here. Well, I can tell ya, it’s because this post was really, really complex to write. We’re talking about some heavy concepts, not just about gameplay. Let me get into it here.

So when I first drafted the vehicle rules, I’d already put the finishing touches on toonpunk first edition. It was my intention, once upon a time, to release these as an expansion pack; but that expansion pack ballooned up into a whole thing, and then there was a few parts of the core book I wanted to change, and now it’s just part of second edition. In a sense I prefer that: releasing it as part of a core book keeps it from being bolted-on. Players won’t have to dip back and forth between books, and there’s (theoretically) not going to be any dangling rules contradictions.

Vehicles have their own statlines and traits, which you guys are already familiar with from the way everything else works. I’ll let the text speak for itself once the book drops, but let’s talk for a moment about the philosophy behind this section. The idea behind this section stemmed out of a gameplay concept for which I’ve gotten a fair bit of flak. That being the idea of the “van guy”. 

For as long as I’ve been developing toonpunk--even longer, actually, because I think this dates back to the first time I started playing roleplaying games--I was fascinated by the idea of the character who helps the crew tick along without being there on the frontlines. When you look at a typical roleplaying game setup everyone is some kind of hacker, gunslinger, ninja, wizard, or whatever. And those are all pretty exciting things to be, sure. 

But you look a little closer at any gang of heroes or outlaws, and who do you see standing just behind them?  You see Simon Pearson, Samwise Gamgee, Alfred Pennywise--someone who keeps the gang moving through their practical knowledge, while the “Heroic” stuff is mostly other people. Most of the time this critical supporting character stays back at the camp, or the lair, or wherever--so, in the case of a roving gang of cyberpunks, they are the “van guy”. 

Everyone seems to agree those characters kick ass. So why don’t more games let you play as them? Well, that’s what brings us to this. Read after the break for more.

The idea of a largely passive and supporting character, who helps the more combat-oriented characters mostly in a logistical and medical capacity, is something that really appealed to me. So the vehicular customization and functionality of Toonpunk grew up out of the idea that this character would have a customizable safe haven, where they help the other characters--being an in the sky, their invisible hand--who would spend most of any given game session watching and waiting, coming in clutch with some obscure skill when they’re needed most. In the book, this role is called “The Founder of the Feast”. 

My old co-conspirator pushed hard back on that character concept, categorically denying that anyone could ever find it fun. Me personally, I’m all about it. I love being kind of an invisible hand. Let me show you some of the tricks they get to play around with using the new vehicle section. On one hand, you’ve got things that let you support your teammates’ abilities, like this:

And then there’s some things that let you take center stage, like this.

But all of this is pretty simple. What made this part so difficult to write about? Well, because, simply put--it wasn’t enough, for me, for players to just drive cars. Toonpunk is a game about being a weird wacky character in an impossibly banal fucked-up world. One of the things I wanted--and this was another thing my old editor pushed back hard against--was for players to be able to play as talking cars and weapons. The hard part wasn’t drafting these rules on how vehicles would work; the hard part was figuring out how to integrate them into character creation. 

Well, I did that part. 

But then I had another, harder thing to do, which I haven’t actually done yet: which is figure out whether or not I actually should include this in the core manual. I like this idea a lot, mind you, there’s some fun stuff in here--we got acidic window-washer fluid, we got unhinging your grille and devouring people whole, we got doing really funny movements to tip-toe yourself through small places--but the core manual is already up to 210 pages and this’ll take on 30 more. So, for the last month and a half, I’ve been drafting, writing, and repeating this process in an attempt to make this thing slim enough to justify including in core but also robust enough to be worth doing.

And so far I’m not really satisfied with what I have. So this devlog ended up being late, and not having as much to show as I really would’ve liked. Sorry about that. But this does have a question, for all you out there in the audience.

Do YOU think this is worth putting into core, even if it beefs up the book? Or do you think this would be better served as a small supplement? I dunno, so...maybe you all do!

Logging In...

Have you ever spun The Wheel of Wow? Gone gem mining in hopes of achieving The Crown of Wonder? If you have, then continue on to reminisce with me. If you've never heard of a The Wheel of Wow or The Crown of Wonder, log in with me to learn about my favorite childhood game Webkinz. 

Webkinz is an online children's game that has real-life counterparts. Players would access the game by purchasing a stuffed animal that has a code on the tag. The child would then go to Webkinz.com and start their journey of being a virtual pet owner.

Players would open Webkinz and meet Ms. Birdy at the adoption center, a motherly penguin who has her hair in a bun. Players would either redeem their code or select a free pet. Free starter pets are a newer addition to the game, originally you would have to pay about $25 for the real-world plush. With the free starter pets, there is less access to different areas of the world. Once the player’s pet is on screen an adoption certificate would pop up and players could fill out the name and pick the gender of the pet. 

After the pet is ready the screen would change to the player’s customizable pets room. There they would be guided through the controls and how to care for the pet’s hunger, sleep, and happiness levels. After the tutorial, they would be given a gift box and a list of challenges. Dragging the box to the room would open it, revealing some food, a piece of decor based on their pet, a welcome balloon, and 2,000 Kinzcash (Webkinz currency). The list of challenges is simple tasks meant to show the new player around Webkinz world. From there they start actually playing the game and seeing around the wonderful Webkinz world which we will discuss in later posts.

I joined in 2008 so some of the procedures and gifts have changed, but for the most part they are similar. When I joined I was six days into being five years old, so my memory of the first tutorials is basically nonexistent, but my joy is not. I made a new account for the purposes of this blog and it was interesting to see how a new beginner would see the world. New players now are given a trial deluxe account for three days, unlocking most of the world. (I was a little bitter when I saw that since it cost me seven dollars when I had it, but c'est la vie)

I kept thinking what kind of things I could add to the fanzine as an AR interactive content considering the amount of time there is to work and I come up with one idea that could be a great plus to the fanzine.

Maybe I can do a simple loop for each piece, inspired by the theme of each piece; nothing as complex as the original design but something with movement that can 'pop-up' from the screen when the user interacts with it. Maybe each piece could have a 'glimpse' of a song from the artists which the artwork is inspired by and that could de a way for the reader to engage with the artists music's.

My fanzine specifically will be inspired by already famous artists and brands, but this is an example of how this fanzine could continue as a future project and be a way for upcoming and underground artists to get their music out there in a subtle, creative and engaging way. Maybe the AR experience could even redirect them to the artists profile on spotify od Apple Music! It could function as a small 'catalog' of new/trending music.

The other option is to create a 'pop up' version of each image where the 3D elements appear 'layered' when the user scans the target as well as some 'facts' or information about the piece, instead of having the info printed in the fanzine.
