FLP CHAPBOOK OF THE DAY: This Rocking Motion of Time by Yvonne Pearson
ADVANCE ORDER: https://www.finishinglinepress.com/product/this-rocking-motion-of-time-by-yvonne-pearson/
Yvonne Pearson’s poetry has appeared in a range of publications including Plainsongs, Split Rock Review, Main Street Rag, Wolf Head Quarterly, Chrysalis, Sidewalks, and Literary Mama. She has received a McKnight Writing Fellowship, a Loft Creative Non-Fiction Award, two Minnesota State Arts Board grants, and other awards. A freelance writer, retired clinical social worker, and children’s author, she lives in Minneapolis with her husband. She has three children and three grandchildren and loves hiking along the Mississippi River.
PRAISE FOR This Rocking Motion of Time by Yvonne Pearson
Yvonne Pearson‘s poems in This Rocking Motion of Time are deeply incarnational. These fearless lyrics exult and grieve for what the body undergoes in its passage through youth, through love and age. They form a gorgeous, sensual testament to being mortal, to being here, and to knowing this will not always be so.
–Susan Deborah King, Poet, Moon Dance, Dropping Into the Flower, One-Breasted Woman, Coven, Tabernacle (Poems of an Island)
In this beautiful collection of poems, Yvonne Pearson casts a panoramic look at her life and asks, “How do we live with/this rocking motion of time?” This question informs all the book’s poems, poems about a childhood in Northern Minnesota, about raising children, about a long marriage. With rich imagery and quiet lyricism, the poems articulate the joys and complications of daily life. An open curiosity and generosity inform the collection, exploring the mysteries of time and the meaning one might make of a life. And while the central question Pearson asks is unanswerable, the book’s final poem suggests an understanding born of experience: “I cannot choose what comes in/The darkened line, the shadow/enters with the light? So be it.” Shadow and light; joy and sorrow; birth and death—all of these make up the rocking motion of time, and Pearson, in the last words of the collection, welcomes them in.

August 7 - Part Two
—Warning, this post contains pixel nudity under the cut. I sent them to a bar and things got crazy.—
We spent another hour picking out bridesmaid dresses by the time we were done – it was dark outside. Naya suggested we go through a drive through for dinner and then go to a bar.
That’s when things got weird.
Tumblr media
Soon after we walked in the door, I heard Lilith hiss and set her sights on some guy who I later recognized as Thorne Bailey Jr. Famous and cocky like his father before him who was around during my Mom’s time.
Tumblr media
“Uhh….why is he naked now?” I asked Lilith, very confused.
“I commanded him to take off his clothes for public humiliation.” She explained like she was telling me the temperature outside.
“Why are there swirly things around his head?” I asked also. I blinked, trying to see if I was seeing things.
“It’s part of him being under my command.” She said before walking off, leaving us with a naked stranger.
Tumblr media
“Why is he following us?” Aubree questioned Lilith.
“Right now, he’s a bit mindless and open to suggestion.” She told Aubree.
“Make him dance on the bar next.” Aubree told Lilith, laughing.
“Uhh, no. I don’t want to see that little vienna sausage flipping around in front of my face.” Naya said with a shake of her head.
Tumblr media
I grabbed another drink while the Naya and Lilith went to dance. Thorne sat down beside me and I did my best to ignore him until he got up to go find the others.
Tumblr media
I looked over and saw Rahmi, who had been quiet since we left the car, taking pictures of Thorne on her phone.
“You’ve surprised me.” Aubree told her in approval.
“You posting those online?” Lilith questioned, while swirling her drink around in her glass. A drink she doesn’t even need.
“Nope.” Is all Rahmi said as she put her phone back in her pocket.
Tumblr media
I’ve never seen Lilith’s – or any vampires- dark form before. Caleb said he doesn’t even have one, which he always found odd.
“So you think all vampires should be burned to ashes, do you?” Lilith questioned Thorne. Apparently, Mr. Bailey had gone on a talk show recently and spoke out against vampires.
Tumblr media
She snacked on him. In a bar. A crowded bar but everyone was too busy drinking and dancing to notice except the rest of our group.
Tumblr media
I dealt with it like a rational adult. With a glass or two of liquor. Things got really fuzzy after that.
I remember wanting to call Caleb, to tell him about what was happening…
Tumblr media
“Heyyyy, Dr. Cullen! Yer sisster made me see a peenisss.”
I don’t remember much after that.
Tumblr media
Though I do remember him carrying me and telling someone he was going to stake his sister himself.
Now, I’m going to go take more aspirin and go back to bed.

Welllp These Are Books: the February 2021 Edition
Tumblr media
Most of my last month was spent on deadline and waiting for people to respond to my emails, which meant I did not have the time (or energy) to write much of anything, but had plenty of time to read, quite frankly, an absurd number of books. Some of which were very good, some of which were very cheesy, and some of which I have now told multiple people was quite possibly the worst book I have ever read. As always, though, what are my opinions if I am not sharing them with the internet? Ridiculous headlines, links, and those aforementioned opinions under the cut. As always, part two, feel free to send me any and all recommendations. It cannot possibly be worse than this one book. Seriously, you’ll understand in a second.
———
Quite Possibly the First Book I’ve Gone Out of My Way to Buy On Release Day Since Breaking Dawn, Which Says a lot About Me. As a Person.
A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J. Maas
Nesta Archeron has always been prickly-proud, swift to anger, and slow to forgive. And ever since being forced into the Cauldron and becoming High Fae against her will, she's struggled to find a place for herself within the strange, deadly world she inhabits. Worse, she can't seem to move past the horrors of the war with Hybern and all she lost in it.
The one person who ignites her temper more than any other is Cassian, the battle-scarred warrior whose position in Rhysand and Feyre's Night Court keeps him constantly in Nesta's orbit. But her temper isn't the only thing Cassian ignites. The fire between them is undeniable, and only burns hotter as they are forced into close quarters with each other.
Meanwhile, the treacherous human queens who returned to the Continent during the last war have forged a dangerous new alliance, threatening the fragile peace that has settled over the realms. And the key to halting them might very well rely on Cassian and Nesta facing their haunting pasts.
Against the sweeping backdrop of a world seared by war and plagued with uncertainty, Nesta and Cassian battle monsters from within and without as they search for acceptance-and healing-in each other's arms.
I’m not kidding when I tell you that I was counting the days until this came out. I was kind of indifferent to Nesta after the original ACOTAR books, but intrigued enough that I was like, I need to read this, and then I did read this and now I care quite a lot about Nesta. And how in love with Cassian she is. And vice versa. Because, let’s be honest, dude is in l o v e. There were some parts of the story I was not super into — namely, Ferye having to die in childbirth. Like, you’re telling me Cassian could have his guts hanging out at one point and we don’t know how to do a c-section? Nah, that ain’t it. Also, pregnancy as a storyline is not always my favorite thing, but more on that in a second. Also, also, here’s a bunch more words about ACOSF.
A “Huh, So That Happened” Sort of Ending. Which Was Disappointing.
A Vow So Bold and Deadly by Brigid Kemmerer
Emberfall is crumbling fast, torn between those who believe Rhen is the rightful prince and those who are eager to begin a new era under Grey, the true heir. Grey has agreed to wait two months before attacking Emberfall, and in that time, Rhen has turned away from everyone--even Harper, as she desperately tries to help him find a path to peace.
Fight the battle, save the kingdom. Meanwhile, Lia Mara struggles to rule Syhl Shallow with a gentler hand than her mother. But after enjoying decades of peace once magic was driven out of their lands, some of her subjects are angry Lia Mara has an enchanted prince and a magical scraver by her side. As Grey's deadline draws nearer, Lia Mara questions if she can be the queen her country needs.
As the two kingdoms come closer to conflict, loyalties are tested, love is threatened, and an old enemy resurfaces who could destroy them all, in this stunning conclusion to bestselling author Brigid Kemmerer's Cursebreaker series.
I loved the first book in this series. Absolutely adored it. So much so that I pretty quickly got the second one and read it. Enjoyed that on its own, but like I said in that one ask, I’m fairly certain A Curse So Dark and Lonely could have very easily been a standalone story. Should have been a standalone story? There was just SO MUCH going on here, and not nearly enough of it was resolved. Plot points just hung by the end of the trilogy, I was not ever entirely convinced Rhen and Harper were actually in love, let alone liked each other, and I thought Rhen got the very short end of an exceptionally cracked stick by the time the whole story wrapped up. Really, I think this  tried to do too much in not enough time and there should probably be another book. Also Lia Mara getting pregnant was dumb. There I said it.
Free Books On Amazon Unlimited That Were Better Than Expected, But Also Read Like Fic
The Bargainer Series by Laura Thalassa
Everyone knows that if you need a favor, you go to the Bargainer to make it happen. He’s a man who can get you anything you want … at a price. And everyone knows that sooner or later he always collects.
Callypso Lillis is a siren with a very big problem, one that stretches up her arm and far into her past. For the last seven years she’s been collecting a bracelet of black beads up her wrist, magical IOUs for favors she’s received. Only death or repayment will fulfill the obligations. Only then will the beads disappear.
But for one of his clients, he’s never asked for repayment. Not until now. When Callie finds the fae king of the night in her room, a grin on his lips and a twinkle in his eye, she knows things are about to change. At first it’s just a chaste kiss—a single bead’s worth—and a promise for more.
For the Bargainer, it’s more than just a matter of rekindling an old romance. Something is happening in the Otherworld. Fae warriors are going missing one by one. Only the women are returned, each in a glass casket, a child clutched to their breast. And then there are the whispers among the slaves, whispers of an evil that’s been awoken.
If the Bargainer has any hope to save his people, he’ll need the help of the siren he spurned long ago. Only, his foe has a taste for exotic creatures, and Callie just happens to be one.
No one is going to be able to convince me this wasn’t ACOTAR fan fic. I don’t care about timing or dates, or whatever. The similarities just...did not stop. In all three books, even. There were three books in this series, by the way. Most of which I really enjoyed. I read them all in like four days of email waiting, so they must have been doing something right. Des was a good love interest and I really liked the flashbacks in the first book. Also Callie didn’t super annoy me. That being said, whoever edited this book. Oof. Some of the prose was so goddamn cringe, I literally lol’ed. Right out loud. Every now and then it was like we had to be reminded that Des was a BAD GUY ™ but it felt very Edward “I’m a killer, Bella” Cullen, and Callie’s internal monologue was occasionally hysterical. Not in a good way. Also Temper was the worst. She was so annoying. Every time she talked, I was like, oh, her again. The first book was the best one.
HITTING ALL MY ROM COM BOXES! BASEBALL! ROMANCE! PINING! ONLY VAGUELY UNCOMFORTABLE WHEN THEY HAD SEX IN THE PORT JEFF DUGOUT BECAUSE I’VE BEEN IN THE PORT JEFF DUGOUT.
Fix Her Up by Tessa Bailey
Georgette Castle’s family runs the best home renovation business in town, but she picked balloons instead of blueprints and they haven’t taken her seriously since. Frankly, she’s over it. Georgie loves planning children’s birthday parties and making people laugh, just not at her own expense. She’s determined to fix herself up into a Woman of the World... whatever that means.
Phase one: new framework for her business (a website from this decade, perhaps?)
Phase two: a gut-reno on her wardrobe (fyi, leggings are pants.)
Phase three: updates to her exterior (do people still wax?)
Phase four: put herself on the market (and stop crushing on Travis Ford!)
Travis Ford was major league baseball’s hottest rookie when an injury ended his career. Now he’s flipping houses to keep busy and trying to forget his glory days. But he can’t even cross the street without someone recapping his greatest hits. Or making a joke about his… bat. And then there's Georgie, his best friend’s sister, who is not a kid anymore. When she proposes a wild scheme—that they pretend to date, to shock her family and help him land a new job—he agrees. What’s the harm? It’s not like it’s real. But the girl Travis used to tease is now a funny, full-of-life woman and there’s nothing fake about how much he wants her...
Living her best life means facing the truth: Georgie hasn’t been on a date since, well, ever. Nobody’s asking the town clown out for a night of hot sex, that’s for sure. Maybe if people think she’s having a steamy love affair, they’ll acknowledge she’s not just the “little sister” who paints faces for a living. And who better to help demolish that image than the resident sports star and tabloid favorite.
Legit, I saw the description for this and I was like—did I write this? Kind of. (Shameless plug to read my own rom com, it also has baseball and pining) It didn’t matter, I loved it. Seriously, it hit all my rom com boxes: childhood friends, best friend’s sister, coming back home under duress, FAKE DATING and, let’s be honest, I am not immune to the use of “baby girl” as an endearment. Every time Travis called Georgie “baby girl” I was like, oh, ok, this is cool. It was cool! I only have two quips. One, that the fake dating didn’t last a little longer. The pacing of the story felt very quick, but that’s also this genre’s style. So I kind of get it. And two, that it happened in Port Jefferson, which is a town in Suffolk County that I have not only been to, but have spent significant time in. Meaning I could picture every single thing, knew exactly where they were and have used the exit on the Northern State Parkway that the final moments of the book took place at. The Port Jeff girls basketball team won a Long Island championship last weekend. In real life, not the book.
In Which Spinoffs Continue to be my Kryptonite. Especially Well-Written Ones
Mistletoe and Mr. Right by Sarah Morgenthaler
Lana Montgomery is everything the quirky small town of Moose Springs, Alaska can't stand: a rich socialite with dreams of changing things for the better. But Lana's determined to prove that she belongs...even if it means trading her stilettos for snow boots and tracking one of the town's hairiest Christmas mysteries: the Santa Moose, an antlered Grinch hell-bent on destroying every bit of holiday cheer (and tinsel) it can sink its teeth into.
And really...how hard could it be?
The last few years have been tough on Rick Harding, and it's not getting any easier now that his dream girl's back in town. When Lana accidentally tranquilizes him instead of the Santa Moose, it's clear she needs help, fast...and this could be his chance to finally catch her eye. It's an all-out Christmas war, but if they can nab that darn moose before it destroys the town, Rick and Lana might finally find a place where they both belong...together.
I mentioned The Tourist Attraction in my January list, and this is the second in the Moose Springs trio. And it’s so good! I wish people were all as nice to Lana as Rick was. It’s what she deserved! More small-town antics, more kissing, another moose. This one was just as cute as the original book, especially because it brought back original characters and Zoey and Graham were so goddamn adorable as a committed couple I genuinely feared for the state of my teeth.
Enjoy the View by Sarah Morgenthaler
Former Hollywood darling River Lane's acting career is tanking fast. Determined to start fresh behind the camera, she agrees to film a documentary about the picturesque small town of Moose Springs, Alaska. The assignment should have been easy, but the quirky locals want nothing to do with River. Well, too bad: River's going to make this film and prove herself, no matter what it takes.
Or what (literal) mountain she has to climb.
Easton Lockett may be a gentle giant, but he knows a thing or two about survival. If he can keep everyone in line, he should be able to get River and her crew up and down Mount Veil in one piece. Turns out that's a big if. The wildlife's wilder than usual, the camera crew's determined to wander off a cliff, and the gorgeous actress is fearless. Falling for River only makes Easton's job tougher, but there's only so long he can hold out against her brilliant smile. When bad weather strikes, putting everyone at risk, it'll take all of Easton's skill to get them back home safely...and convince River she should stay in his arms for good.
Wrapping up the Moose Springs trio, this one might have been my least favorite, but that’s not really saying much. Since I loved them all pretty equally. River and Easton’s banter was grade-A, top-notch, which is a one-way ticket to my reading-heart. Maybe part of the problem (I say problem like there really was one) was that most of the story took place on a mountain. I kind of wanted more small-town shenanigans, and updates on the condos and the state of the town and Graham being mayor. Still, this was very cute. I swooned multiple times. I’ll probably read anything Sarah Morgenthaler writes from here on out.
Seriously, What Is YA? Does Anyone Know?
The Beautiful by Renee Ahdieh
In 1872, New Orleans is a city ruled by the dead. But to   seventeen-year-old Celine Rousseau, New Orleans is a safe haven after   she's forced to flee her life as a dressmaker in Paris. Taken in by the sisters of the Ursuline convent in the middle of the carnival season,   Celine is quickly enraptured by the vibrant city, from its music to its fancy soirées and even its danger. She becomes embroiled in the city's glitzy underworld, known as La Cour des Lions, after catching the eye of  the group's enigmatic leader, Sébastien Saint Germain.
When the body of one of the girls from the convent is found in Sébastien's own lair--the second dead girl to turn up in recent weeks--Celine battles her attraction to Sébastien and suspicions about his guilt along with the shame of her own horrible secret.
After a third murder, New  Orleans becomes gripped by the terror of a serial killer on the  loose--one who has now set Celine in his sights. As the murderer stalks  her, Celine finally takes matters into her own hands, only to find  herself caught in the midst of an age-old feud between the darkest  creatures of the night, where the price of forbidden love is her life.
Like I said last month, I put a hold on pretty much everything Renee Ahdieh had written in my library. And this was just as good as the last series I read. Her world building is just—chef’s kiss, gorgeous. I dream of writing this airy, magical way, that makes you feel like you’re in New Orleans. That being said, I do not know what kid is reading this because apparently this is YA and I had to read every single word to figure out what was going on. Now, I know there are two more books in the series, but this one felt like a lot of set up and I spent most of it being like...will this make sense eventually? It did, but only during a very rushed climax of final few chapters. The sequel isn’t available on Kindle at the library, and I haven’t bought it yet. So, that’s probably kind of telling.
In Which You Cannot Always Depend On Old Favorites
No Judgments by Meg Cabot
When a massive hurricane severs all power and cell service to Little Bridge Island—as well as its connection to the mainland—twenty-five-year-old Bree Beckham isn’t worried . . . at first. She’s already escaped one storm—her emotionally abusive ex—so a hurricane seems like it will be a piece of cake.
But animal-loving Bree does become alarmed when she realizes how many islanders have been cut off from their beloved pets. Now it’s up to her to save as many of Little Bridge’s cats and dogs as she can . . . but to do so, she’s going to need help—help she has no choice but to accept from her boss’s sexy nephew, Drew Hartwell, the Mermaid Café’s most notorious heartbreaker.
But when Bree starts falling for Drew, just as Little Bridge’s power is restored and her penitent ex shows up, she has to ask herself if her island fling was only a result of the stormy weather, or if it could last during clear skies too.
I love Meg Cabot. That should be stated upfront and at the very beginning because for a very long time I have claimed that being Meg Cabot was my dream job. I’ve read pretty much every book Meg Cabot has ever written and was fairly certain I’d be into these once I did read them. Only I was...not. Not really. Everything in this book happened so quickly, I felt like I was the one in the hurricane. People were kissing and then they were having sex and there was a storm and pets and then—it was over? The pacing was all over the place, I had no idea why Drew and Bree liked each other, some guy kicked a dog at one point?? It was weird. Which leads us to—
No Offense by Meg Cabot
A broken engagement only gave Molly Montgomery additional incentive to follow her dream job from the Colorado Rockies to the Florida Keys. Now, as Little Bridge Island Public Library’s head of children’s services, Molly hopes the messiest thing in her life will be her sticky-note covered desk. But fate—in the form of a newborn left in the restroom—has other ideas. So does the sheriff who comes to investigate the “abandonment”.  When John Hartwell folds all six-feet-three of himself into a tiny chair and insists that whoever left the baby is a criminal, Molly begs to differ and asks what he’s doing about the Island’s real crime wave (if thefts of items from homes that have been left unlocked could be called that). Not the best of starts, but the man’s arrogance is almost as distracting as his blue eyes. Almost…
John would be pretty irritated if one of his deputies had a desk as disorderly as Molly’s. Good thing she doesn’t work for him, considering how attracted he is to her. Molly’s lilting librarian voice makes even the saltiest remarks go down sweeter, which is bad as long as she’s a witness but might be good once the case is solved—provided he hasn’t gotten on her last nerve by then. Recently divorced, John has been having trouble adjusting to single life as well as single parenthood. But something in Molly’s beautiful smile gives John hope that his old life on Little Bridge might suddenly hold new promise—if only they can get over their differences.
This isn’t a sequel SEQUEL, but another one of those “exists in the same universe,” or same town, as it were, and it was better than No Judgments. Molly and John actually had a few legitimate conversations before they started kissing. The conflict was still weird and sort of forced, this was not Meg’s usual banter (I fell like I can call her Meg at this point, y’know?) and, again, the ending just felt like it...happened. I don’t know guys, maybe I should just reread The Boy Is Back. Or that quasi Persephone-Hades series. It’s been awhile. On that one, at least. I read The Boy Is Back like six months ago.
ABSOLUTELY INFURIATING ROM COM THAT I CANNOT BELIEVE I FINISHED, SOMEONE GIVE ME A PRIZE FOR FINISHING THIS
Fight or Flight by Samantha Young
The universe is conspiring against Ava Breevort. As if flying back to   Phoenix to bury a childhood friend wasn't hell enough, a cloud of   volcanic ash traveling from overseas delayed her flight back home to   Boston. Her last ditch attempt to salvage the trip was thwarted by an   arrogant Scotsman, Caleb Scott, who steals a first class seat out from   under her. Then over the course of their journey home, their antagonism somehow lands them in bed for the steamiest layover Ava's ever had. And  that's all it was--until Caleb shows up on her doorstep.
When pure chance pulls Ava back into Caleb's orbit, he proposes they enjoy their physical connection while he's stranded in Boston. Ava agrees, knowing her heart's in no danger since a) she barely likes Caleb and b) his existence in her life is temporary. Not long thereafter Ava realizes she's made a terrible error because as it turns out Caleb Scott isn't quite so unlikeable after all. When his stay in Boston becomes permanent, Ava must decide whether to fight her feelings for him or give into them. But even if she does decide to risk her heart on Caleb, there is no guarantee her stubborn Scot will want to risk his heart on her...
When I tell you guys that this was the worst book I have read in recent memory, I am not kidding. Might actually be the worst book I have ever read. Bar none. And that’s saying something because one time I had to read Ender’s Game in college and that, like, physically pained me. This was awful. Awful people. Awful plot. Awful resolution. AWFUL. Where to start? Well, I’m not going to apologize for spoilers, because God help us all, do not read this book. Ava has been through so many horrible things in her life it was like someone was trying to set a record. Bad parents, cheating ex-boyfriend, dead former best friend who was former because of the cheating ex-boyfriend. Naturally, this made her a control freak because—of course, or something. And Caleb! Oh my God, fucking Caleb Scott. The dickwad. I’ve never rooted for anyone to not get the girl more. When Ava “broke up” with him (they were never really together) I might have cheered. Shitty things does not give you an excuse to be a dick, and Caleb was a dick. Seriously, he started crying about how his ex-fiance KILLED THEIR BABY and I was like—this cannot possibly be a real book. It was! With lots of abortion opinions out of FUCKING nowhere, and weird possessive behavior from, like, every dude in it. Both Ava AND her best friend (not the dead one, a different one) got assaulted at one point. I kept reading solely because I was desperate to see how they rationalized Ava and Caleb getting back together at the end and they didn’t. He showed up on her flight when her boss came up with a fake work trip so he could sit next to her on the plane. What? WHAT?? It was so dumb. So bad. I can’t believe I read it.

---
He waited, and the mages emerged from the room with bloody hands. All he could do was replay the moment over and over, watch as Erimond spirited Loghain away from the field, and Cailan shouting across the ranks of surrendered Gwaren soldiers for a healer, everything slowed to a horrific crawl he could not stop. They had carried her in still with the sword through her gut.
--
Her hand felt cold where he held it. The blood loss, Wynne explained, kept her heartbeat thready and the circulation poor in her extremities. She explained, too, that she was being held under a Sleep to speed the healing and that everything had been done that could be. That now they would have to wait. He could barely see her breathing, and he watched each shallow rise and fall of her chest beneath the piled blankets as if will alone could keep her from the dark. Fergus stood behind him, with Cailan, Teagan, Morrence, and even the maid he’d heard called Graela, and he didn’t care that any of them saw when he leaned over her to brush a lock of raven-black hair from the pallid, feverish skin on her forehead. An action so like on the first night he met her but with such a world more meaning behind it, it staggered him. Someone put their hand on his shoulder, but he didn’t care who it was. It offered only empty comfort.
“It’s my fault,” Cailan spoke into the silence. “I let this happen. I don’t –” But the words faded, lost, or perhaps waiting for someone else to pick them up.
Alistair didn’t waste breath on contradicting him; he had seen everything from the walls.
Hours later, he heard the strains of an argument echo down the hall between the king and his newly reunited queen. The words didn’t carry through the distance, but the vitriol that carried to Rosslyn’s rooms held the sourness of long-buried resentment. Once, he might have worried for his brother, but now he only scowled and shifted closer into her side, careful not to disturb her wound as he shared his body heat with her. Despite Anora’s objections about propriety, he refused to be torn from her side, and they all agreed she was too cold, and her body needed to focus on healing, and someone had to stay with her in case – in case –
He refused to think about it. In between the mages’ examinations he lay on top of the covers pressed as close to her as possible, like a dog might, with his hand clasped tight around hers and his ear over her heart, willing it to keep time. Only Graela interrupted the monotony of the hours, bustling in every now and then to stoke the fire or purse her lips at him, but he never moved and she left him alone. The silence grated at him through the long, dark periods in between. To keep time and to ward away the spiralling turns of his thoughts, he did what he always did, and talked. He told her about the clean-up after the battle, the clemency Amell requested for Howe’s pressganged blood mage, the way Loghain’s forces surrendered when they saw the dead rise, and swore fealty to Anora not long after. The servants’ hall in the bailey had been transformed into an infirmary, and a mass pyre had been built for all those who didn’t make it. Fergus was improving now he was being properly housed and fed, but he worried. Of the riders who had gone out with her, only she still clung to life; Erimond had surprised the others with some kind of trap like the one he had seen snare Cullen in the Harrowing chamber, and there had been little left of them when scouts were finally sent out.
Howe had disappeared in the confusion.
“But when you wake up,” he murmured to her, desperate, “when you’re better, I’ll help you track him down, no matter how long it takes, and then you won’t have to bite off his other ear.” He snorted softly and brushed her hair from her eyes. “Yes, Graela told me about that. It’s a very you thing to do, and I’m sure he deserved it.”
But the darkness crowded in on such small assurances, and as the lack of answer pressed against his ears, the fragile quirk of his mouth sputtered like a candle flame and went out. Beyond the walls, a storm raged about the castle, a howling wind that buffeted the keep with enough violence to almost be felt through the stone as well as the air, that frightened even the fire in the grate and drove sleet against the windowpanes. He had to turn his head into his shoulder to blink back the sting in his eyes.
--
The Sleep had been removed two days since, and yet she still hadn’t woken. Alistair took his meals – the little food he could stomach – in her rooms. He didn’t dare take the time away from her to bathe, or even to let Marten shave him, all for fear that she might wake up alone. Only the healers could pry him from his place at her side, and their sympathetic looks grated on his fraying temper. She might be healing physically, but whatever had happened to her mind had left her murmuring in nightmares, fidgeting beneath her blankets without any recognition of the people who surrounded her in the waking world. Worst were the times she screamed, or cried out his name in terror, and he had to hold her down so her thrashing did not tear open her wounds. The pressure of his hand in hers went unreturned, his assurances she wound be alright growing smaller and smaller with every passing fit.
For the moment, five days after they had brought her in, she lay quiet, her eyes still beneath their lids. He tried to focus on the growing colour in her cheeks, and the deep, even suck of her breath, but exhaustion hounded him. It made his eyes gummy and fogged his mind, but he preferred it to the cavernous ache of uncertainty that throbbed with every beat of his heart, because if he were too tired to think at all, he would be too tired to wonder about the future, to fear she might waste away without ever again waking and turning her smile on him.
He shifted in his chair in an attempt to banish the shadow, sitting forward to check the arrangement of her blankets for what must have been the hundredth time. After that, he untucked her hair from behind her shoulders so it wouldn’t itch, and fluffed her pillows, and checked her forehead for fever. Cailan had brought him books from the library to help distract him, and he glanced to them for a moment before a dark spot on the sheets caught his eye. Frowning, he touched it and fell back, shouting for help even before he reached the door.
“She’s bleeding,” he told Amell, who emerged from the room next down the corridor, where Fergus was convalescing. “It’s soaked through the sheet – maybe the last nightmare? I didn’t think it was that bad, but… Maker, I should’ve –”
“I’ll have a look,” the enchanter assured him, pushing past him into Rosslyn’s room.
Alistair lingered in the doorway, his sense of propriety warring with urgency as he watched Amell peel back the layers of blankets in order to examine her patient.
“Well?” he asked, when her expression turned from concern to something he couldn’t read.
The healer shook her head. “She’s fine, there’s nothing to worry about.”
“But she’s bleeding!”
“Her monthly courses have come,” Amell explained. “It’s normal.”
He scowled at that, the outrage that despite the stress to the rest of her body, she couldn’t even be spared such an indignity. And yet, considering the alternatives, it was a straw to which he was more than happy to cling. “So she’s not in any danger?”
“Not from this,” Amell assured him. “She’s healing well.”
“Wynne said she should have woken up by now,” he said, before he could stop himself. When the healer refused to meet his gaze, the frustrations of the previous few days spilled over into anger. “If there’s bad news, I want – I’d rather be prepared for it. I don’t need coddling.”
Amell bit her lip, but nodded. “Senior Enchanter Wynne suspects there might be something holding her in the Fade.”
“A demon?”
“Impossible to say, considering the trauma. But there’s still a lot to hope for.” For a moment it seemed like she wanted to say more, but as she looked him over that now-familiar pity shone in her eyes, and she shook her head. “You should go and get some proper rest, Your Highness,” she said. “You’re no good to Her Ladyship swaying on your feet like this. I’ll stay with her, and send for you if she wakes.”
“But –”
“Please, Your Highness. What if she wakes and the thing that greets is her is some great shaggy beast she hardly recognises?”
She meant the words as a joke, but they blunted the harsher truth. He had no response. He was so tired that the healer’s lightest touch on his arm guided him from the room, and by the time he realised he was being dumped in the corridor, she had already turned her most reassuring smile on him.
“I’ll make her comfortable, I promise,” she said.
“You’ll come find me? If –”
“Of course. Take care of yourself, Your Highness. I already have enough patients to deal with.”
The door shut in his face. Cut loose, he stood in the middle of the hallway, lost, without anywhere else to go. It was too late in the day to call for a bath, and how could he sleep with Rosslyn still yet to open her eyes? He considered going to see Cailan, to offer aid with paperwork so he might occupy his mind, but his few glimpses of his brother since the battle had shown him with sallow cheeks and sunken, fatigue-shadowed eyes that couldn’t be hidden by any amount of grooming. For the first time, Alistair felt a prick of guilt for not making more of an effort to help, or at least thanking him for the lightening of his own burdens. But it was the middle of the night, the castle was quiet except for the weather howling outside, and even if the king were still awake, Anora would likely not be happy at having their rest disturbed – and she disliked him enough already. He wished he could tell Rosslyn about her glares.
Instead, he took a lantern and turned to let his feet carry him down the three flights to the kennel, passing nobody, his thoughts turning to the long nights after his mother died but before he was taken to Rainesfere, when the warmth of dogs snoring in the straw became his only source of comfort. When he entered the harness room, the unexpected light roused Gareth from his cot, and the young man blinked and yawned as he untangled himself from the sheets. With the small number of Highever’s remaining war dogs needing to be housed, he had been declared kennelmaster in his father’s place. The majority of the dogs had gone to war with Teyrn Bryce, and those left behind had either been sold to help pay for Howe’s mercenaries, or had been sent to Vigil’s Keep to improve the stock in Amaranthine, which meant the young man’s duties consisted mostly of trying to track down which animals had gone where. It was one particular animal that Alistair had come to see.
“How’s the patient?” he asked, too tired to stand on formality.
“He knows something’s amiss, Your Highness,” came the reply. “He wunnot eat. If not for that Jowan he’d not be here at all, but he’s pining, and the poultices have knocked him further out’a kilter.”
He thought back, to the first night he had met Rosslyn. “Last time she was injured, he wouldn’t leave her side.”
“He’s not strong enough to leave the runs yet, let alone gan up all them stairs. You’ll see.”
Gareth shrugged on a jacket to ward off the chill, and beckoned Alistair into the next room. A few of the dogs rustled in their beds, and one chuffed in surprise at having its sleep interrupted, but they settled soon enough when they recognised who had come to visit, and why. In the nearest cage, piled with the deepest bedding, lay the only dark shape that didn’t move with the two humans’ arrival. Instead of a greeting, the dog stared vacantly at the far wall, the layers of blankets laid over his back rising and falling in time with his breath. Wraps of white bandage stood out against the brindle of his fur, breaking up his shape in the dim light.
“He’s not eating,” the kennelmaster said to Alistair. “He’s got no heart in him, and that’s without all the poultices sending him woozy.”
“Have you got any food I can give him?”
Gareth blinked. “Well… aye. But he’s trained to only take food –”
“I know.” At the sound of Alistair’s snap, Cuno’s head turned ever so slightly, nose twitching as he caught Rosslyn’s scent. “But he has to eat, and she isn’t here.”
Upstairs, he could do nothing for her but wait, and drive himself mad, but this – this he could do, and his heart surged with a faint hope that maybe by helping the one, it might help the other. Maybe the dog could do what he could not, and bring her back from whatever nightmare had her trapped. He had heard Dalish tales about the dogs that guarded their camps at night, and the Ash Warriors who sent their dogs into the Fade after their masters when they died, to protect them on the long road to the afterlife, so… why not try?
If nothing else, he was sick of being useless. While Gareth went to retrieve the kitchen scraps from the pail by the door, he let himself into the cage, murmuring reassurance to the dog, who tracked his progress with the slow rotation of an ear but still didn’t raise his head. Gareth returned and passed a shallow dish through the bars.
“Here, boy. Are you hungry?”
Alistair sat close enough to Cuno to touch him, but didn’t, and instead set the dish down and settled back comfortably with his legs crossed and his back against the bars to wait. He had learned very early that a dog not overtly inviting touch was one that should probably be left alone. It was understandable. From where he sat, he could see where the poultices had soaked through and discoloured the bandages wrapped around the gap of the missing limb. Even with the numbing effect of the herbs provided by the mages, Cuno had to be in incredible pain, and groggy from blood loss, and confused about why his mistress had abandoned him. The blood mage, Jowan, had worked hard to save the dog’s life, pouring healing spells and blood magic both into the wounds until the point of passing out, according to those who stayed to help him – and it was the only reason Cailan had decided to leave the boy in the dungeons and not hand him to the templars until Rosslyn woke to pass her own judgement.
When she woke up, not if.
With a sigh, Alistair moved the scraps into his lap and lifted a hand to stroke along Cuno’s neck. The dog growled, a low, true warning that echoed too loudly in the confined space, and he let his hand fall to his side with the slump of his shoulders.
“I know,” he said. “I know you’re in pain, and I know I’m not the one you want to see.” He hauled in a steadying breath, which stumbled past the stinging lump in his throat. “It’s not… Maker, it’s not because you failed, or because she’s forgotten about you, it’s…” He closed his eyes, though the tears still leaked between the cracks and rolled down his cheeks, and only smeared across his face when his head fell into his hands, spent.
“She’s lost,” he admitted. “She got hurt, and now she won’t wake up and I can’t bring her back and I don’t know what to do. I – I can’t…”
Something heavy landed on his knee. Blinking through blurred vision, he found dark eyes gazing up at him, their expression somewhere between hopeful and imploring, and still glazed with pain.
“She’ll make it.” Alistair swallowed, but when he cautiously rubbed a hand over Cuno’s ears, there was no growl to make him stop. “There’s nothing she can’t do. But you need to pull through for her. Imagine what she’d do if she woke up now and found out you weren’t eating? You need to keep up your strength so you can climb all those stairs to see her. Imagine how happy she’ll be.” His touch ran to the base of the dog’s neck, where the edge of the bandage met the short, coarse fur. “Don’t worry about this – she’ll love you just the same, and she’ll tell you how brave you are, what a good dog you are, but…” He faltered again. “You need to eat. Just a little. Please.”
He took a small strip of meat from the bowl for the dog to sniff, holding his breath. After a long moment, the very tip of a pink tongue poked out just far enough to lick the morsel from his fingers, and through a shower of half-hysterical praise, Alistair picked out another scrap, and then another. In the end, after a long-drawn endeavour that left his hands covered in grease and slimy with drool, only about half of the food had been eaten, but just before Cuno settled back to sleep, he lapped some water from the bowl pushed under his chin, with more enthusiasm than he had shown since waking from his injuries.
The effort exhausted Alistair. He kept his hand in the dog’s ruff until his soft breath turned into gentle snoring, and even then couldn’t bring himself to leave – and not only because Cuno was seeking comfort pressed tightly against his side. He didn’t want to go back, didn’t want to find out what was waiting for him. What if she was just the same, pale and catatonic and unresponsive? What if she was worse, gripped in another nightmare and calling his name? And what if she had awoken while he was gone, only to find he had deserted her? He couldn’t face it, any of it. His eyelids felt heavy, and the blanketed straw was so warm, the dog’s snores lulling him to surrender to the exhaustion that had been clawing at him for nearly a week…
--
“Your Highness!”
Cuno barked, startled from sleep by the clamour, but even as he was called again, Alistair took longer to rouse.
“What –?”
“Your Highness, you have to come quickly!” Graela pivoted to a halt in the doorway, her hair and dress both awry, and her eyes blown wide with alarm. “It’s Knight-Captain Irminric, he’s saying – ugh, no time! He’s come for Her Ladyship – I think he means to kill her!”
Bewildered, but stung by the urgency in the elven woman’s voice, Alistair staggered out from under the weight of the dog, stumbling through the pins and needles in his legs as he barrelled past Graela and up the stairs. His pulse rolled like thunder in his ears. He should never have left her. He should have been there, ready to defend, like he promised.
When he reached the second floor, he heard the commotion before he saw it, and skidded around the corner to see two templars standing off against Amell and a pair of soldiers in Cousland blue. Early morning sunlight fell across them from the open doorway, glinted off weapons drawn and raised.
Alistair didn’t hesitate. The templars barely registered his approach before he was barging past them. The sight that met him as he crossed the threshold stopped his blood cold. Irminric advanced on the bed with his sword in a guard, while Morrence stood before him, her own weapon in her hand, the snarl curling her lips a ragged counterpoint to the melancholy determination on the templar’s face. Rosslyn still slumbered, peaceful and helpless to the drama playing out around her.
“She’s possessed – an abomination,” Irminric was saying, placidly, as if explaining to a small child. “I do not want to do this, but it is a mercy.”
“You won’t touch her.”
“If she wakes, it will be worse for all of us, now stand –”
Alistair’s fist connected with the templar’s jaw, before he realised he had crossed the room. Stunned, Irminric went down in a crash of plate and a yell as his sword spun out of his hand. Morrence kicked the offending weapon into the far corner by the window then turned her attention to the two who had crowded in in Alistair’s wake.
“Knight-Captain!”
“Don’t even,” Morrence growled.
“I want you gone from the castle.” Every muscle in Alistair’s body shook, but his voice rang through the room like a bell, a lance of white hot fury that burned away even the smart where his knuckles had caught Irminric’s chin. “All of you. You’re no longer welcome here.”
The knight-captain worked his jaw, probing with his fingers for damage. “This is my duty,” he ground out. “It must be done.”
Incensed, Alistair took a step forward, raised his fist again. “You came armed with two knights as bodyguards so you could slaughter an injured, defenceless woman – who, by the way, saved all your lives less than a week ago.”
“I’ve heard her screaming too,” Irminric retorted. “Whatever demon is holding her in the Fade is torturing her, taking over her mind. I don’t want her to suffer, and she wouldn’t want to waste away like this.”
“And being murdered in cold blood by a coward is so much better.”
“I’ve known her since we were children,” he insisted, quieter now. “I do not wish for this, but it is a mercy. For the greater good.”
“She’s still fighting!” Alistair cried. “Whatever it is, she’ll beat it, and I will not let you take away her chance because your Chantry-fed paranoia likes to stab things first and ask questions later!”
“Your Highness –”
But whatever the reply was going to be, it cut short as a clatter in the doorway announced Cailan’s arrival with Graela, and hot on their heels, Fergus limping on the crutches that took the weight off his ruined legs.
“What’s going on here?” Rosslyn’s brother demanded.
“Nothing that hasn’t already been sorted,” Alistair replied, without moving. “The knight-captain was just leaving.”
“The thing inside her is tightening its grip – you know it, too, even if you refuse to see it,” Irminric insisted.
“I will not give up on –”
“Help me…”
Rosslyn’s voice. Everyone stopped. A frown had come to her face, and her breathing had quickened in the way that usually preluded a nightmare, her eyes fluttering beneath the lids as she rose from the depths of unconsciousness.
He all but shoved Morrence out of the way to get to her, to catch her hand.
“I’m here, love – it’s me,” he murmured as he sank to his knees by the bed.
“Alistair…”
“Rosslyn –”
She mumbled something else, too low and too quick to catch, but her expression crumpled into pain.
“I’m not going anywhere,” he told her, with an iron grip on her hand, the softest touch to the side of her face. Behind him, Irminric was arguing with Fergus, but he didn’t care. “You need to wake up – I need you to come back to me. I need you to fight it.”
“There’s something… something following… so many eyes…”
“Fight it.”
Her breath shortened, brow creased, teeth gritted as her body twitched. The fit only lasted a few moments, and then she went limp once more, the grip on his hand loosening as she fell back into deep sleep. He didn’t have the heart to call her name, not this time as grief and disappointment swelled so tightly in his chest it took all his self-control not to fling something across the room. He wanted to sob. Instead, he pressed his forehead against her hand and squeezed his eyes shut, determined not to give in to the loss of control. He would not give up, and he would not lose her to whatever monster was trying to consume her.

In Marcher Fields - Chapter 23
Tumblr media
Poppy Hawke was never the daughter her mother wanted, the sister her twin preferred, the hero Kirkwall desired. They do not see the woman who stands between them and the chaos that threatens. No one takes the time to look, until she crosses the path of a certain Knight-Captain with demons of his own to battle …
[Read on AO3]
9:42 Dragon, Solace
Skyhold was so quiet without the majority of the Inquisition in residence.
Poppy was uncomfortably reminded of Kirkwall in the days following the Qunari invasion, a population discovering slowly just how much had been lost in the chaos, a stillness covering everything for days. There was no such mourning here and now, of course - indeed, the Inquisition had just achieved a victory over Corypheus in the Arbor Wilds. But most of the Inquisition were still in the Arbor Wilds, dealing with prisoners, ferrying the wounded safely out of harm's way. The only reason she was in Skyhold was because she had outright refused to be left behind when Cullen had joined the rest of Xena's inner circle to rush ahead to the fortress.
But there was a restlessness hanging over Skyhold. Corypheus' army had been defeated, not Corypheus himself. No one knew better than Poppy that he would not give up so easily.
She pushed away from the gatehouse battlements, turning back to look into the lower courtyard, quietly agitated in herself. Xena and her advisors were closeted in the war room; the rest of the inner circle were in their accustomed places around the fortress, each waiting to be told what the next step would entail. A skeleton crew of guards and servants made the fortress seem far less populous than it had been just a few weeks before. But that lack of people made unknown faces very easy to spot.
It was a dwarf that had caught her attention. Ordinarily, dwarves were a regular sight in Skyhold, the much-needed connection to the lyrium supply from Orzammar, but this one ... there was something furtive in the way he moved. He walked with purpose, certainly, but kept glancing around, as though expecting to be challenged at any moment. Poppy's eyes narrowed.
Best not to disappoint him, then.
Passing through the unused gatehouse and down the steps into the upper courtyard, she lengthened her stride to intercept the furtive dwarf as he reached the top of the wide steps from the lower courtyard. He stuttered out an apology as she ran into him, barely catching his breath before her hand clamped onto his shoulder and dragged him back under the arch of the stairway that lead to the keep proper. Bearded and tattooed - Carta, or casteless-turned-exile, she realized - the dwarf glared up at her as Poppy pressed him against the stone.
"Who sent you?" she asked, pleasant enough for the time being.
"Messenger from the camp," he answered her in a gruff tone, though she noted he was clever enough not to try and pull out of her grasp.
"Nice try," Poppy countered. "But you're not wearing any insignia I recognize, and you move like someone worried about being caught. Now ... there are two people who could have sent you that immediately spring to mind. One of them will result in you being put in the cells; the other will result in you turning around and taking a message back from me. Lying to me will result in more than a few bruises. You look like a clever lad. So who sent you?"
She could see the options flickering through the dwarf's mind - was his employer worth getting himself beaten up by the Champion of Kirkwall? No one was worth that. Inviting the woman who had killed the Arishok to kick the Void out of you was stupidity worthy of a prize, and they both knew it. He sagged a little under her grip, pulling a neatly-folded letter from his pocket. Poppy glanced at the initial written on it, and felt a part of herself growl. Bianca.
"Where is she?" she demanded, her grip tightening on the dwarf's shoulder. "In the camp?"
He winced at the bite of her fingers through his cloak. "Not here, messare," he swore vehemently. "Traveling with her husband."
"But she found the time to write this and send it here," Poppy pointed out with a scowl. She considered her captive for a moment. "Are you her courier of choice?"
The dwarf cleared his throat awkwardly. "For Ferelden and the Marches," he told her. "Personal courier."
"How many of these letters have you delivered to Varric over the years?" she asked suspiciously.
"Too many," he admitted. "It's steady money, messare."
Poppy paused, thinking over her options. She knew that Varric had called it off with Bianca, not simply because he had begun a relationship with Xena - who, in her opinion, deserved her friend infinitely more than the smith who had kept him hanging for years - but also because he had shown her the letter he had sent to Bianca making his position absolutely clear. That Bianca would disregard his request to cut all ties was enough to make Poppy angry. But she could see a way to deal with it while preserving Varric's opinion of the woman he had once loved.
"That steady money should have dried up already," she told him honestly. "Varric wants nothing more to do with her, and I will not allow my friend to be badgered and prodded at by someone who forfeited her right to his attention years ago. I am going to burn this letter. You are going to assure her that you delivered it. I am sure she'll send another one when she gets no reply. You will burn it. You will burn every letter she gives you to give to Varric, and you will swear blind that you delivered them. And I won't hunt you down and make you regret ever lying to me. Are we clear?"
His eyes narrowed as he looked up at her. "What do I get out of this, messare?"
Poppy bent down until she was glaring into his eyes from barely an inch away, her voice low with menace. "To walk away."
The dwarf swallowed, apparently not needing much time to weigh his options at this point. An offer to have your ability to walk removed by a human legend in her own lifetime could do that.
"Right you are, Messare Hawke," he agreed. "Tethras won't get another letter from her via my hands."
"Glad to hear it." Poppy straightened, removing her hand from his shoulder, and jerked her head back toward the gatehouse and the bridge to the mechanized lift. "Sod off."
The unfortunate messenger did just that, taking the steps back down to the lower courtyard a good deal faster than he'd come up them. Poppy frowned, looking down at the letter in her hands. It was so tempting to open it, to find out exactly what Bianca thought she was doing, but at the same time ... these were private words. They were words that were not meant for anyone but Varric, and though Poppy had no intention of letting him find out they had ever been written, she wouldn't betray her friend by reading them.
"Although it really doesn't surprise me that she doesn't understand what the word "no" means," she muttered to herself, inserting one corner of the folded and sealed parchment into the flame of the nearest torch.
And, without warning, green light flashed across the world, a ponderous crack of thunder following it as high above the clouds swirled, horribly familiar to anyone who had looked up at the sky following the explosion at the Temple of Sacred Ashes. The burning parchment dropped from Poppy's fingers as he head snapped up, hearing the cursing that rose from everyone in this outer area.
Corypheus.
So he had surfaced. Too arrogant to run and hide, to lick his wounds and try again years from now, he was forcing a confrontation. And by the look of things, he had gone back to Haven to reopen the Breach.
She felt a flare of anger that her mistake had come back to haunt so many people all over again, her feet already moving toward the armory. She wasn't the only one headed in that direction - Iron Bull, Sera, Blackwall; they were all moving to collect their weapons, expecting to accompany the Inquisitor to this final confrontation. Poppy glanced up at the window of the war room, seeing Josephine's frightened face, Leliana's impassive wariness at her back.
A few minutes later, and she was ducking out of the armory, settling her armor and weapons about herself, unsurprised to be stepping aside as Xena and Varric hurried past her to arm themselves. Servants were bustling, throwing together packs for the journey down to the site of the Inquisition's first defeat; on the other side of the bailey, she could hear Master Dennet and his grooms preparing the mounts for their party. And there was Cullen, stone-faced, worry in his eyes as she tightened the last buckle and moved to join him for these few moments.
"I have to go," she told him before he could open his mouth to argue. "Corypheus was my mistake in the first place. I have to be there."
"I know." Cullen's sigh was heavy, but accepting, his hands falling to her shoulders as he looked into her eyes. "I want to come with you, but ..."
She reached up, gently curling her fingers to his cheek. "I know," she promised, drawing him down to press her brow to his. "We're going to win this, Cullen. I am coming back."
"Maker, please ..."
Heedless of any curious eyes that might turn to them, he pulled her into his arms, burying his face in the crook of her neck as she wrapped her own arms tight about him. She could feel him trembling, knew he could feel her shaking in answer. This was a fight she might not come back from ... but she refused to admit that aloud. She had lost too much not to have earned her happy ending. Not even Corypheus was going to keep her from having that promised home with her husband at long last. She just had to see this through to the end that loomed over them.
"Hawke."
Varric's voice as he passed, his hand on her back, drew her out of that embrace, a warning that there would be no waiting for her if she missed their departure. Cullen stiffened, his lips warm against her temple before he let her step back. No more words - everything that needed to be said between them had been said too many times before. All that remained was hope; hope that there would be no more need for such words when she returned again.
Poppy nodded to her husband, falling into step with the rest of Xena's motley crew, all of them somber with the knowledge that this really was the final confrontation. Riding out of Skyhold, turning their faces to the looming threat of the Breach, they all knew just one thing ... it was Corypheus or the world.
No more chances.

In Marcher Fields - Chapter 18
Tumblr media
Poppy Hawke was never the daughter her mother wanted, the sister her twin preferred, the hero Kirkwall desired. They do not see the woman who stands between them and the chaos that threatens. No one takes the time to look, until she crosses the path of a certain Knight-Captain with demons of his own to battle …
[Read on AO3]
9:41 Dragon, Firstfall
"You're doing it again."
Poppy blinked, dragging her gaze from the table across the hall to stare at her brother, mildly uncomprehending. Alex was smirking at her over a forkful of Antivan cherry pie.
"Doing what?" she asked innocently.
"Come to bed eyes at your dreamy commander," he teased, and yelped as her foot made contact sharply with his ankle. He laughed, reaching down to rub it. "All right, all right. Just try not to lay him out on a table in public, would you? I love you, but not that much."
Poppy smirked back at him, ignoring the snickering rising from Varric on her other side to let her gaze return whence it had come. Cullen was apparently deep in discussion with the Inquisitor on the far table, his own dessert hardly touched. Xena was animatedly talking about something that was clearly important to her, and the sheer force of his attention was endearing to see. It was good to know that he had learned to make friends of his colleagues in these past years, that he wasn't as alone as he could so easily have been. As she watched, his eyes flickered toward her, meeting her gaze with a warmth that blossomed deep inside, in her heart and in her belly, casting her face into a gentle glow of a smile that made her brother snort with laughter again.
"Oh, shut up," she managed, rolling her eyes away from Cullen as warmth grew in her cheeks. "This is all your doing, you can't complain about it."
"Am I complaining?" Alex defended himself. "I thought I'd earned the right to be smug."
"Not until it's a done deal," Varric interjected across Poppy. "Half an hour of grabby kisses does not mean they're back for good."
"Gosh, aren't you the little ray of sunshine?" Poppy drawled to her friend, unable to keep her smile in check as he guffawed with laughter. "Easy there, short-arse. You're already halfway to the done deal with Xena, you know."
Varric's laughter abruptly stopped, and Poppy had the privilege of seeing her friend look totally disconcerted. He glanced across at the Inquisitor's table himself, his own gaze lingering as Xena let out a raucous laugh of her own. She knew that look - she'd seen it in Cullen's eyes too many times not to know it - but Varric seemed hell-bent on not admitting his heart was already lost.
"Not gonna happen, Hawke," he told her quietly, dragging his eyes away.
"Bianca?" she murmured, concerned when he blanched and nodded. "One of these days, you're going to have to tell me this story."
"When it's over, maybe." He sighed, shaking his head. "But enough about me. Can I write your epic love story now?"
Poppy let out a burst of cackling laughter, quick to quiet herself when noble heads turned toward her, burning with curiosity.
"When the adventurous part is over, maybe," she allowed, knowing it had to be killing Varric to be sitting on romance he wouldn't have to make up to get it written down. "I'll tell you when that is."
"I'm going to be an old man before you say yes to that, aren't I?"
"It's a distinct possibility, yes."
Varric sighed exaggeratedly, throwing a grin her way as he poured more ale into his tankard. With a quiet giggle to herself, Poppy made a valiant attempt to finish her pie, but her eyes rose yet again to the opposite table.
To Cullen, gazing back at her with a fiendishly secretive smile glimmering in his gaze, raising one eyebrow at the turn of her blush. All she could do was smile in return, her mind's eye lingering on the kisses they had shared not so very long again, on the newfound certainty that he still loved her. Work and duty had got in the way of a proper reunion ... but now the night had come, and the meal was over. Varric had said Cullen worked long into the night, every night, but she didn't think that would be the case tonight. She hoped it wouldn't be. There was still so much that hadn't been said, so much they needed to renew together. One night would not be enough. A lifetime ... well, that might be time enough.
"Just go to bed, would you?" she heard Alex sigh exaggeratedly. "This is getting nauseating."
She kicked him again for good measure, laughing as he whimpered just for her benefit, and finally rose from her seat, locking eyes with Cullen once more. He nodded to her, slowly rising from his own seat as she turned away to head for the door into the walled garden, ignoring the hopeful attempts by various nobles to get her attention as she passed them by. She had no time for them anymore, and certainly not tonight.
The sound of the gathering in the hall faded as the door swung shut behind her. Poppy breathed in the fragrant air of the little garden, smiling faintly as she recognized the scents of elfroot, embrium, Crystal Grace, even the dank tang of deep mushroom. Xena's little herb garden was coming along very well, it seemed. She stepped across the cloister, resting her temple against the cool stone of the uprights, one arm wrapped about the narrow column. Nerves flickered in her belly - would she be all he remembered? Was she good enough? Would he even bother to follow her out here?
The noise from the hall swelled for a moment at her back - she started to turn - and Cullen was there, arms reaching for her, mouth hungry for more of the kisses they had been denied for far too long. She couldn't help giggling into the first of those kisses, feeling his lips curve in an answering smile lost in the heady rush of knowing that this was what she had been missing all these years. The safety, the warmth, the love that Cullen could envelop her in with just a kiss filled a hole in her heart she had been nursing since the last time he had been able to touch her.
Bare hands skimmed her sides, kneading, holding, one smoothing down over her hip to pull her ever closer, the other diving into the fall of her hair, cradling her head in his palm as her hands passed restlessly up and down his back. No armor tonight, for either of them - simple jerkin and shirt for the Commander of the Inquisition, never before seen without his plate and mantle by the eager nobles until this night. But he wasn't the Commander of the Inquisition, not here, not now. He was Cullen, her Cullen, and the woman in his arms wasn't Lady Hawke, wasn't the Champion, wasn't even the consultant helping the Inquisition with the Warden problem - she was Poppy. For the first time in a very long time, she was simply Poppy.
Stone pressed against her back as he surged forward, pinning her there quite literally between rock and a hard place, filling her mouth with his soft groan at the gentle rake of her nails through his hair. She was vaguely aware of the rise in sound behind him, and an embarrassed female voice stuttering out an apology for interrupting as he drew back from her in frustration. She caught a glimpse of Chantry robes disappearing back into the Great Hall, unable to keep herself from snorting with laughter at being interrupted again.
Cullen's frown smoothed away as he looked at her, slowly relaxing into a smile of his own as they leaned into each other in the moonslight.
"I think it's time we found a little privacy, don't you?" she murmured, tracing a fingertip along the stubbled line of his jaw.
"Maker, yes," was his fervent reply, drawing another laugh from her as she pressed a quick kiss to his lips.
She pushed him back, claimed his hand in her own, guiding him quickly away from that access way toward a door set into the outer wall of the castle. Skyhold was enormous, there was no doubting that - plenty of space for visitors and inhabitants alike - but she had been given a room beneath the Inquisitor's rooms in the tower, with a wide window that overlooked the bailey of the keep. It was a great honor, of course, to be quartered all but with the Inquisitor, but right now, Poppy was more frustrated with the sheer number of stairs required to reach the appropriate level. It was very difficult to force herself to keep going with Cullen walking close to her back, the hand she hadn't claimed brushing hungrily over her side and hip as though he couldn't bear to stop touching.
In the darkness of the hallway, she fumbled with the door handle, loosing a breathless whimper as his lips found her throat, seeking out the sensitive dip behind her jaw that he knew would turn her to water in his grasp. The door came open, and she stumbled forward, released from his arms to turn back and watch as he closed and locked the door, turning to her with predatory tenderness in his gaze. And she didn't care. For the first time in a long time, she was glad to be the prey, glad to be caught and kissed and touched, reminded all over again that this was where she should be, this was where she should have stayed. She loved him.
It could have been hours later, it could have been moments, but the moons soon shone through the window on rumpled sheets and bare skin, on limbs tangled together without any wish to separate. Poppy lay on her side, facing Cullen, her fingertip teasing gently up and down a new scar on his chest; his fingers pushing through her hair to trail down her back as he brushed kiss after soft kiss to her lips.
"You look good," she murmured to him in the darkness. "Not so haggard. Not so driven. Apart from this -"
Her hand rose, gently touching the pad of her thumb to the groove between his brows, proof that a frown lived there more often than not. He, predictably enough, frowned at the touch, eyes tilting upward for a brief moment before returning to her own.
"I have headaches," he admitted quietly.
"I thought you had good supply lines here," Poppy queried in a soft voice. "Surely you're not low on lyrium?"
Cullen grimaced, a flicker of that old awkwardness touching his expression as he sighed. His hand covered her, drawing her palm to his mouth to press a hot kiss there.
"No, Poppy, I ... we have good supplies," he promised her. "I simply ... I haven't taken lyrium for over a year now, not since I left Kirkwall."
Horror flashed through her for a long moment - memories of Samson's hungry addiction, of Cullen's own descriptions of the templars in the infirmary at the Gallows when their reliance on lyrium had become too much. But no ... he wasn't raving. He wasn't haggard or grasping for something he couldn't have. He had made the decision himself. And she couldn't deny that it had done him so much good already. His flesh was warmer, pinker; his eyes, brighter; his mind just as sharp as it had been. He had not lost anything through this decision of his. Perhaps he could teach others to do the same, and finally break the Chantry's leash entirely.
"I wish I had been there to help you," she whispered tenderly, drawing her fingers along his cheek as his hand returned to her back, encircling her in his embrace once again. "I'm so proud of the man you've become, Cullen."
He shook his head, a deprecating smile touching his lips - lopsided, thanks to the scar Alex had branded him with years ago.
"You made me the man I am, Poppy," he murmured back to her. "Even without you there to hold me to account, I have spent years wondering what you would do. I have tried to live my life the way you would want me to. I turned a blind eye to too much in Kirkwall; I allowed too many abuses, too much misery, to fester and bloom under my hand, just because I refused to let go of my own anger. I'm still angry, Poppy. But I won't let it blind me again."
She smiled sadly, knowing he had been through too much to ever let some of it go, shifting closer to touch her lips to his brow as his hands tightened on her once more, gathering his cheek to her breast, lowering her head, curling to wrap him close and stroke his hair, letting him listen to the beat of her heart as he had done so many times before.
"I will never leave you again," she whispered into the darkness. "Let the world find another Champion. I've found where I belong."
