okay i NEED to talk about Crowley's Edinburgh outfit

It's so good and I'm a big fan of fashion and history. To me the general silhouette reminds me more of the walking suits of the Victorian era, but this is too early for all of that, but Crowley's dress does reflect 1827 women's fashion very well. I think it might be a pelisse-robe, a long overcoat that was usually worn for morning walks which makes sense for the occasion.

After the Regency period, the waistline began dropping until it reached the natural height, and cinched waists came in to fashion and would stay that way for a long time. Crowley's is pretty loose considering, and she's also wearing a skirt (i think it's a skirt) that has a much smaller width than was fashionable, especially compared to her waist.

It also features a top that's far more decorative than the skirt, which also wouldn't have been the style. The skirt is a bit less flared than was typical and her sleeves don't quite have the same volume, but they have the same signature bell shape. Another reason Crowley's look isn't as fitted as was stylish is because she, to my knowledge, isn't wearing a corset. Her sleeves have sleeve caps, which were just beginning to come into fashion. Her skirt has a sort of structure to it that reminds me of fashions of both much earlier and much later periods. The way it almost goes out to the side seems very French Court, but it's far more minimalist than the French Court style.

The costume designer never sacrifices any elements of Crowley's character in order to make historical accuracy work. Yeah, Crowley wears older styles, but that's because he's been around for a long time. Yeah, Crowley favors monochromatic or two-toned looks to the patterns that were popular in the 1820s, but he always has. Yeah, Crowley downplays the femininity of a lot of pieces he wears or tries to counteract them (with the hat, in this case, or like i said, lack of a corset), but that's because he's an androgynous individual.

It just seems like such thoughtful and detailed costume design! As a lover of period dress this look was fantastic and felt so in character.
