"No," said Inej.

some important and underrated lines in the books, related to wylan van eck (aka gold that i found again while writing the character study fic):
Wylan took a deep breath as if sucking in courage and sputtered, “You won’t throw me overboard. You need me.”
--- Six of Crows, Chapter 13. when i say wylan is unhinged, i mean he had the audacity to lie to kaz brekker (who doesn't know yet that wylan isn't the best hostage) AND use that lie to go against kaz AND actually win. jesper only notices wylan lying to kaz in the second book, but despite being wide-eyed as matthias describes, wylan's been lying to kaz from the very beginning. throughout the books, wylan gets better and better at using people's assumptions of him as a weapon/tool, and he admits as much when jesper says: "i'm going to stop underestimating you", and wylan replies: "then you're going to be a lot harder to surprise."
While Kaz explained and Jesper used the laundry shears to portion out pieces of rope, Wylan helped Inej and Nina prepare. To pass as members of the Menagerie, they would need tattoos.
--- Six of Crows, Chapter 28. wylan is CANONICALLY a tattoo artist. demolitionist. poisons expert. musician. and tattoo artist. do with that what you will
“I don’t like the idea of killing people, either. I don’t even like chemistry.”
--- Six of Crows, Chapter 32. HE LIKES NUMBERS. and music. and jesper. there's just something about wylan being forced into chemistry when he doesn't truly enjoy it, vs. everything his father's forced him to do when he doesn't truly enjoy it. he says this right after the we could wake him up line, and him mentioning that he doesn't even like what he's been doing all along underscores how much wylan's ruthlessness comes from a place where he doesn't want to be cruel. he's just. had to do a lot of things to survive. and he does want to survive
Gunfire sounded from above. Apparently, Wylan had found the controls. ... Wylan had scratches from the glass all over his cheeks and neck. He was beaming.
--- Six of Crows, Chapter 39. wylan is unhinged. truly. and i love him, really. he was really the first to figure out how to fire the tank. him, not jesper, which was a choice i very much approve of
He should be making a plan, maybe even plotting revenge, trying to gather his wits and his resources. And what was he doing? Wishing he could ring for tea... Whatever it took to survive the Barrel, Wylan knew he didn’t have it.
--- Crooked Kingdom, Chapter 23. first, wylan wishing he could ring for tea, vs. the parallel in the show where he offers the crows tea. second, wylan being painfully honest with himself. but third, he ends the chapter being able to navigate the streets of the barrel himself without knowing how to read the signs, which really reflects his amazingly good memory and skill for thinking along three axes, like the lockpick kaz compared him to
“Yes,” Wylan said, that one word imbued with a whole world of hope. “But I don’t have anything to bargain with.”
--- Crooked Kingdom, Chapter 28. wylan's spent so long bargaining for his life that by the time he meets genya, he doesn't believe he has anything left to bargain with. but wylan still tries, AND when he succeeds, he still has the audacity to get genya to make him look better
in conclusion, wylan might be shy but that doesn't mean he isn't scheming something, but that doesn't mean he wants to scheme, but that doesn't mean he isn't good at scheming. he's excellent at it, he's just an unhinged ball of contradictions, and wylan would, could, and should beat kaz in a chess match

I was thinking about this line from crooked kingdom chapter 23- "That night, he arrived back at the boardinghouse to find the first letter. The only words he recognized were the name of the sender: Jan Van Eck."
what a haunting thing it is that the only words wylan can read is his father's name. how many times had he seen it? how deep was the shape of the name seared into his brain, to be the only words he could recognize? Jan's ghost can follow him wherever he likes.
imagine- you can't read a thing no matter how hard you try, and as you try all it does is remind you of the shame your father nurtured you with. and then years later, once you can remove the shame like the cancer it was, still the only thing in the world you can read is your father's name.

longer quotes under the cut!
"Don't pretend to shrug this off. You've barely looked at me since I returned."
Because I am greedy for the sight of you. Because the prospect of facing this war, this loss, without you fills me with fear. Because I find I don't want to fight for a future if I can't find a way to make a future with you.
But he was a king and she was his general and he could say none of those things.
"I'm looking at you now, Zoya." Her eyes met his in the stillness of the garden, vibrant blue, deep as a well. "You need never ask forgiveness of me."
(Rule of Wolves, chapter 23)
--------
When she turned to him, her eyes were bright with anger.
"He was going to break my legs," she said, her chin held high, the barest quaver in her voice. "Would you have come for me then, Kaz? When I couldn't scale a wall or walk a tightrope? When I wasn't the Wraith anymore?"
Dirtyhands would not. The boy who could get them through this, get their money, keep them alive, would do her the courtesy of putting her out of her misery, then cut his losses and move on.
"I would come for you," he said, and when he saw the wary look she shot him, he said it again. "I would come for you. And if I couldn't walk, I'd crawl to you, and no matter how broken we were, we'd fight our way out together - knives drawn, pistols blazing. Because that's what we do. We never stop fighting."
The wind rose. The boughs of the willows whispered, a sly, gossiping sound. Kaz held her gaze, saw the moon reflected there, twin scythes of light. She was right to be cautious. Even of him. Especially of him. Cautious was how you survived.
At last she nodded, the smallest dip of her chin. They returned to the tomb in silence. The willows murmured on.

also while I'm on the subject of Kaz being selfless and trying to minimize damage for his Crows during the Geldrenner chapters, have we talked about how Kaz's first instinct when backed into a corner he didn't see an immediate way out of was to give himself up to the stadwatch...but specifically in a way that explicitly protects Wylan from his father even though it ensures a very painful end for Kaz???
“Yup,” said Jesper. “We are well and truly cooked.” Kaz drew a circle on the window with one leather gloved finger. “Not quite,” he said. “I can get the stadwatch to stand down.” “No,” said Inej. “I’ll give myself up.” “But Kuwei—” said Nina. “The stadwatch don’t know about Kuwei. They think they’re looking for Wylan. So I’ll tell them Wylan is dead. I’ll tell them I killed him.” “Are you out of your mind?” said Jesper. “Kaz,” said Inej. “They’ll send you to the gallows.” “They’ll have to give me a trial first.” “You’ll rot in prison before that happens,” said Matthias. “Van Eck will never give you a chance to speak in a courtroom.” “You really think they’ve built a cell that can hold me?” “Van Eck knows just how good you are with locks,” Inej said angrily. “You’ll die before you ever reach the jailhouse.” -Chapter 23, Crooked Kingdom
Because if we haven't, we really should talk about that

Just a reminder that Wylan was the reason the tannery he worked at improved and started running smoother. He had the dye chief asking him for advice and how to keep everything in operation.
——————
One afternoon, Wylan heard the dye chief complaining that they were losing gallons of dye to evaporation because the boilers ran too hot. He was cursing over the cost he’d paid to have two of them fixed and how little good it had done.
Wylan hesitated, then suggested adding seawater to the tanks.
“Why the hell would I want to do that?” said the dye chief.
“It will raise the boiling point,” said Wylan, wondering why he’d thought it was a good idea to speak at all. “The dyes will have to get hotter to boil so you’ll lose less to evaporation. You’ll have to tweak the formula because the saline will build up fast, and you’ll have to clean the tanks more regularly because the salt can be corrosive.”
The dye chief had merely spat a stream of jurda onto the floor and ignored him. But the next week, they tried using saltwater in one of the tanks. A few days later, they were using a mixture of seawater in all of them, and the dye chief started coming to Wylan with more questions. How could they keep the red dye from stiffening the hides? How could they shorten processing and drying times? Could Wylan make resin to keep the dyes from bleeding?

I finished Six of Crows. Great fun. Loved the characters, and though elaborate heists aren't generally my thing, I enjoyed this one a lot. The tank in particular was funny. Nina was my favorite POV to read. I just love her. Kaz definitely comes across differently than he does in the show. He talks more, which makes sense, since in a book, it's hard to have a main character communicate almost entirely through death glares and unamused eye rolls. And of course, his own POV chapters softens him a bit.
I had to age up the characters a few years in my mind to make it work, though. I don't know if this is a case of the author being forced to age down her characters to market the book as YA or what, but the idea that these 15-18 year olds are leading a crime syndicate and then get hired by a powerful and rich merchant to break into a foreign country's maximum security prison and smuggle someone out is, frankly, ludicrous.
The characters don't even come off that young. Sure, some of the relationship stuff is a little immature, but still not quite teen. It all would make more sense if they were early to mid 20s at least.
I would believe Jesper as a 21 year old gambling addict who dropped out of university. Inej as a 22-23 year old survivor of human traficking and forced prostitution who then spent years turning her acrobat skills into spy and assassin skills. Kaz, in particular, would definitely be more believable as a gang leader's second with a reputation as one of the most dangerous and ruthless bastards to roam the streets of the Barrel if he were say, 25 or 26.
ANYWAY, the show definitely made the right choice in hiring actors that are clearly older than what their characters are supposed to be in the book.
I've got Crooked Kingdom on hold through Libby. I requested both at the same time, so I think I only have a few days until I can start reading that one too.

Crooked Kingdom, Chapter 23: Wylan
“What do you think my forgiveness looks like, Jordie?”
Aww, Kaz is still shooked up after his altercation with Pekka Rollins. This also raises an interesting question about how Kaz sees Jesper and Jordie. Kaz really doesn’t seem to be taking a younger brother kind of role with Jesper, considering how he’s always in charge, and Jesper definitely doesn’t see their relationship as brotherly.
So, this is most likely about how Kaz still harbors resentment towards Jordie about his death and about how he lost their money. I don’t think his punishing Jesper has been even a little about Jordie, and this is just an outburst because of his heightened feelings.
Really, if we hadn’t seen the aftermath of their escape from Kaz’s point of view I might have assumed that he was having a flashback again.
“You think they can’t kill each other with their bare hands?”
No, the point is that they aren’t trying to kill each other. They’re trying to blow off steam and the lingering resentment they have after Jesper fucked up and almost got them all killed.
It’s also very cute how Kaz, who has always shown himself as someone apart from the group and Kuwei who’s basically a hostage are both willing to try to give themselves away to save the rest of the group. I really hope Kuwei manages to get to Ravka in the next book so that we can see him find people who appreciate him for who he is.

-02/08/2023- "Six of Crows" by Leigh Bardugo
Read through: 100%
Read today: 23%
My Kindle totally bamboozled me! I have a version of the book that also has a sneak peak into "Shadow and Bone" as promotion material. But it's 5 full chapters!!! This means since yesterday I only had a few more chapters to go through before the end. A good thing to since I actually spent the day outside and didn't have much time to read, except in the evening.
Anyways. Book is finished. I'll be writing a review later on. Funny enough, I loved it more this time than during my first read through a couple of years ago.
Also! My bf bought himself "Crooked Kingdom" today, so he can just keep reading. Needless to say, he's hooked.
Last thoughts for this book:
I know I've said it already, but I'll say it again. Nina's and Inej's friendship is so underrated. There's a certain softness in them that really comes out when they're together. The gentle touches, the hugs and the kisses. They'd work better as a pair than with their love interests.
Speaking of love interests, I adore Inej for standing up for her own needs and wants. She loves Kaz. It's so obvious. It's so intense. But she knows she can't get what she needs from him. Not right now and not in the way she wants. I think I had a slight problem with that fact last time. I wanted them to finally end up together because they should, but now, when I'm older, I'm really happy Bardugo made the choice to give Inej more character than that. She is string enough to fight for herself.
But yeah. KAZ, YOU FUCKING IDIOT!!!!!
Oh, now you want to get your girl? When she's been snatched by the enemy?? Good job, doofus. Real fucking smart!
Jumping back to their eskape from Fjerda, the final fight was somewhat anticlimactic. I remember it being more exciting, but this has just been... Meh.
I completely forgot the book just... Ends! It cuts off at the worst moment. Sure, nowadays it's easy just picking up the sequel, but hell. Reading through the book when it first got published must have been hell!
Okay! That's it from me! Review will be up soon, until then, if you want to talk to me about the book, feel free! ❤️

In our generations of the Gentiles, Have we FORSAKEN the memory of the gospel of Jesus Christ; the “GOSPEL OF THE KINGDOM”?
Matthew 4:23 - From that time (when John was cast into prison) Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand" - the same message that John had preached in the wilderness, but John also foretold the topping of the hills and the filling-in of the valleys to "prepare the way of the Lord," that Isaiah prophesied and that Journalist Josephus told about in describing how his armed forces and servants had shaved off the tops of the hills around Jerusalem and filled in the deep valleys with the dirt and debris collected.
Zechariah wrote it was at the time of the 70 A.D. siege that Jesus' feet stood on the mount, (chapters 12-14) and Micah said it was in the Last Days of the Israelite that the Mountain of the House of the Lord would be established in the tops of the mountains and exalted above the hills at Jerusalem (chapter 4) and Isaiah said, "The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, "Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God - Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain: And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it."  - Isaiah 40:3-5
The highways were made straight and even to prepare for Jerusalem's enemies to come and surround the city during the siege, and to have all flesh present when Jesus' feet touched the mount fulfilling prophecy that every knee would bow and every tongue confess that "Jesus is Lord".
Jesus faithfully preached this message of His soon coming Kingdom to the Israelites for three and a half years; and it was Because of their wicked ways that their time for punishment and release from the yoke of other nations serving themselves of them had come; and it was time for His Kingdom to be established so that His will might be done in Earth as it is in the unseen realm! (Matthew 6:10)
That kingdom lasted around 770 years, until Satan was released from prison - the time being cut short for the sake of the elect. It was around year 840 A.D. that civilizations worldwide disappeared, leaving their cities and villages vacated; for the devil's army was as many as sand of the sea.
The faithful were all at Jerusalem enjoying the last Feast of Tabernacles for that Kingdom Age when that army of dissenters came up against the "camp of the saints" and were devoured by fire from heaven. The text in Revelation 20:7-10 doesn't say what happened to Christ's kingdom and the Mountain of the House of the Lord, but Hebrews 1:10-12 gives us a good hint for understanding it's now in another realm that's unseen to us; for it was "folded up and changed."
Isn't it a relief to know you don't have to figure out a 'gap theory'; and that earth will not have to endure another thousand years of "dirt, blood and guts"? For we are living in one of Apostle Paul's "Ages to come", saved by the same blood of Jesus and looking forward to a gathering of all who "keep their garments." - Revelation 16:13-16. AlleluJAH!

so I googled “how to pronounced llewellyn” and the results that came up said that it was a welsh name (also apparently it’s not that hard and almost pronounced how it’s spelled), but I thought the Kaelish were based after the Irish? Are the Kaelish supposed to be a combination of all the celtic cultures?
