Book Review: Leah on the Offbeat
Creekwood (Book 2) by Becky Albertalli
Tumblr media
Source: Google Images
When it comes to drumming, Leah Burke is usually right on the beat - but real life is a little harder to manage. She loves to draw but is too self-conscious to show it. And she hasn't mustered the courage to tell her friends she's bisexual, not even her openly gay BFF, Simon.
So Leah really doesn't know what to do when her rock-solid friend group starts to fracture. With prom and college on the horizon, tensions are running high and it's hard for Leah to strike the right note while the people she loves are fighting - especially when she realizes she might love one of them more than she ever intended...

Utterly Annoying
Other than Simon and Bram, I have nothing good to say about this book. I hated Leah Burke, I hated how reading this book was equivalent to reading about nothing really happening, I just really hated this book because Leah was an extremely infuriating character. The number of times I ended up being angry or irritated by Leah was surprising because I did not DNF this book.
I have never felt such annoyance with a fictional character as much as I did for Leah Burke. Firstly, I hated how unappreciative she was to her mother and when she assumed her mother was dating Wells because her mother was a gold digger? That's rich, coming from a woke teenager... Secondly, I hated how she treated Garrett. He was honestly such a sweetheart and she led him on. The worst thing was, she knew she was leading him on yet she still led him on. I absolutely dislike it when people play with other people's feelings like that. Thirdly, I hated how she projects her unhappiness to everybody and anybody like the damn world revolves around her. Apparently, to Leah, nobody is as righteous as her and as long as someone does not share her sentiments, those people are wrong. Like when Morgan said the wrong thing in a moment of anguish and rage? I agree what Morgan said was racist but the way Leah refused to see just how sorry Morgan was, I wished Anna had called Leah out way more than she did. Or when Abby repeatedly said she's confused but Leah was not having it because apparently nobody can be confused with their sexualities, right? My goodness, how does that girl retain friends?
I do not know why Albertalli wrote Leah the way she did but I genuinely hope Leah Burke was not based on someone real.

When Women Were Dragons Summary:
Back in the 1940s women first started turning into dragons. A wonderful exploration on how women are repressed, exploited, manipulated and abused. Also they turn into dragons and also they always were dragons.
Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Summary:
Straight people should have to come out too. And the more awkward it is, the better. Simon Spier is sixteen and trying to work out who he is - and what he's looking for. But when one of his emails to the very distracting Blue falls into the wrong hands, things get all kinds of complicated. Because, for Simon, falling for Blue is a big deal ... It's a holy freaking huge awesome deal.

Books I Read in June
I’m trying to get back into reading a bit more because I’m pretty sure I only read like 3 books last year, and reading is what helps inspire my writing. I thought it might be fun to share what books I’ve been reading plus a few of my thoughts on them, starting with the books I read in June.
Tumblr media
Kate in Waiting by Becky Albertali
I really enjoyed this book at the beginning, but once I began to realize how the book was going to end, I started to like it a little less. Kate and Andy’s dynamic was really fun and their “communal crushes” was interesting, if not a little weird. I just hated that Andy had to lie to her while she was still crushing on Matt. I do like the way it all turned out in the end; it was just a little painful to get there (and not in a fun way).
Love, Creekwood by Becky Albertali
I’m going to be completely honest here and admit that I didn’t actually finish reading this one. I don’t know if it was because it had been so long since I read the other books or because I didn’t like they style. I usually really like epistolary-type books, so it was probably the former. I just couldn’t get into it because I didn’t feel very close to their story.
In Deeper Waters by F.T. Lukens
In keeping with being honest, I have to say that it took me over half the book to really get into it. It felt like the story was too slow at first and then too rushed. Tal and Athlen’s journey felt really drawn out without actually drawing me in, and once we got to the good part where Tal was back home and everything was happening, it felt like it all happened too fast. I really enjoyed reading Tal’s interactions with his family, and their dynamic was so well written; I wish we had gotten to see more of that. And more of Athlen getting used to everything on land. Altogether, I really liked the book; it just left me wanting more, and I’m not sure if that was a good thing.
One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus
I actually read this book a few years ago, but I decided to reread it before reading the sequel. The ending was a total surprise back then, which is what I really love in a mystery novel. It wasn’t as fun reading it the second time around already know how it was going to end, but it was interesting to go back and notice some of the details that I hadn’t before.
Little White Lies by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
I love mystery novels, and this one was no different even though I was a little hesitant about the premise of this story at first. The book had me guessing the whole time, trying to figure out who Sawyer’s father is, and I even loved seeing her make friends and all the new revelations along the way. I like the way this story played out, so I’m not sure if I’m going to read the sequel.
Husband Material by Alexis Hall
I absolutely adored this book, and you can read my more in-depth review in this post if you want.
The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee
I tried reading this book a few years ago, but I barely made it 100 pages in before it triggered me so bad that I couldn’t open the book again. Now that I’m in a much better place, though, I was able to pick up the book again and read it in its entirety. The slowburn of this story nearly killed me. I’ll admit that I didn’t really care for the adventure aspect of this book (which means I probably won’t finish out this series) but I was really interested in how Monty and Percy’s relationship would play out. It hurt me deeply every time that they would come together just to be ripped apart again, and the only thing that kept me reading was the hope for a relatively happy ending where they would somehow work past their differences and end up together. So, I was very pleased with how this book ended.
As a little bonus, here are some the books that I’m going to try to read in July:

Recent Books I've Read and My Ratings and Reviews on them!!
- An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson
Tumblr media
4.5/5
I want to start off by saying I love faerie stories and fae/human romances. This book was really good I enjoyed it. I enjoyed the writing style and characters. The romance was good too but I did feel like at times it seemed a little rushed and corny. I usually don't have a problem with corny but in this book it kind of erked me a bit (got over it relatively fast) but still. I did end up enjoying the romance though. I also thought the plot or certain characters would've been a bit different especially the prince. I was expecting more of an aloofness and for a longer time etc, also for some reason to I also expected him to have long hair. But all in all It was a really good read, and I do recommend it!!
- Love, Creekwood by Becky Albertalli
Tumblr media
5/5
Beck Albertalli can't do anything wrong when it comes to writing. I have yet to come across a book of hers I didn't love. I breezed through this in one setting, not only was it a quick read but also a great read. I love revisiting the Simonverse. I love revisiting these character's. You know I was a bit worried I wouldn't know how to feel since the whole novella is told from the perspectives of everyone in email form but I loved that as well too. My only problem . . . . . . . . . . How could it end that way!!!!!?????? Was Bram excited?? I imagine he was but I feel he might also feel a bit guilty since Simon loved Haverford so much. It was left kind of open ended in a way ( I thought so in a way anyways) and I need more!!!!
- The House In The Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune
Tumblr media
5/5
First book I read of 2023 and wow what a wonderful surprise this was!!! I went into this book not quite knowing how I would feel about it or if it would live up to the hype or not!? But OH BOY DID IT. Ugggghhh it was soooo good, throughout the book I was giggling, smiling, tearing up etc. I didn't want the book to end, and I think that's why I waited a few days after starting it, to pick it back up and finish it. It really is a great read, I would love a follow up novel to this, there's definitely potential for one!! Fingers crossed the author will think about one later on down the road??!! 🤞I think it would also be a great pick for a possible movie adaptation. If it is ever made into one I think Cameron Britton (Hazel - TUA) would be perfect for Linus Baker. He's my perfect fancast anyways. And Cherry Jones as Helen. I don't know who I would want casted for the other characters yet though.

I used to think boners literally pointed in the direction of the person you're attracted to, like a compass. That would be helpful. Mortifying as fuck, but at least it would clarify things.
