I love 1776. It's such a fun musical! I definitely want to be in it someday. Anyways, the way these actors did "But Mr. Adams" is hilarious!

Fort Ticonderoga Artifacts: Day Two
Hello fellow history nerds! I am back again with another post from the archives of Fort Ticonderoga. This one I think is really neat and I believe I saw it when I was at the fort myself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a locket that has a piece of George Washington's hair in it!
Description from the website: Gold locket with convex glass front and back, enclosing a lock of George Washington's hair backed with paper. The reverse contains a small swatch of a pale blue textile, apparently a piece of a battle flag surrendered at Yorktown which was presented to Washington by the first Congress.

Fort Ticonderoga Artifacts: Day 3-5
Hello everyone! I am so sorry that I forgot this series! I was sick for a couple of days but now I am back! Into the archives I gOOOoOOoO!
The first artifact is something simple, yet something truly important. Because of it, we have records of the past! That's right, a pen!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(I had to write the first paragraph of the declaration of independence in my history class a couple of days ago with a ink pen and paper. My classmates were struggling with it and I was laughing because I was able to complete the paragraph and write some more.)
What the website says about this artifact: Wooden pen case (.a-e) containing a quill pen (.f) and nib (.g). The case itself unscrews into four sections: a rounded, hollow cap marked "Berry's / Patent" on the exterior (.a), a hollow tube for holding quills (.b), a hollow tube with an attached ink bottle (.c), and a hollow cap (.d) with a spring (.e) inside.
The second artifact is a picture of the fort itself! I was scrolling through and I thought it was very pretty, so I added it here!
Tumblr media
Description from the archives: Black and white photograph of the reconstruction of the northeast bastion at Fort Ticonderoga.
The third is a piece of art of General Anthony Wayne. I just thought it was really well done, so why not add it here?
Tumblr media
From the website: Half length print of General Anthony Wayne in elaborate, rectangular frame. Text reads: "General Wayne."
The last one is this beautiful helmet! Military helmets are just so cool!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's what the website says about it! "Black leather helmet with brass decoration and a long horse hair mane. The black leather helmet has a leather brim and a torn leather neck protector. The layered brass chin scales is attached to each side of the helmet with stamped brass eagle side buttons. The die-struck oval brass cap plate depicts a figure in military dress charging forward on a horse. Above the mounted figure, there is an eagle holding a circular wreath in its beak. The style of the cap plate is typical of the 1830s. A large brass comb is fastened to the crown of the helmet. A stamped brass cone is attached to the front of the comb. This piece would likely have held the red pompom found with the helmet. A long mane of white horse hair flows out from the left side of the comb. Three die-struck brass eagles holding arrows and an olive branch are attached to the helmet. One of the eagles is attached on the right side of the helmet. The other two eagles are attached to the left and right side of the comb. One the left side of the helmet there is a black leather cockade with a New York button in the center. The button has an eagle on it and says "EXCELSIOR"."

Fort Ticonderoga Artifacts: Day One!
Hello fellow history nerds! Birch here, starting a new series about artifacts on the Fort Ticonderoga site. Fort Ti is very near and dear to my heart, being a beautiful piece of history. I was fortunate to step foot inside the fort with my family in 2015 and I have wanted to go back since that day. But the archives will do for now! Today's first artifact is part of the old fort itself! Fort Ticonderoga has many of its stones still left, but the fort was in ruins before it was rebuilt. This wood piece was part of a window cap from when the fort was surrendered to Ethan Allen, the Green Mountain boys and Benedict Arnold.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Section Window Cap, Fort Ti. Next window North of where Allen and Arnold entered Officers' Quarters. De la Place looked out of this window at the Green Mountain Boys. May 10, 1775. Fort burned by St. Clair on his evacuation July 6, 1778. Secured, June, 1876. Last Piece of timber of famous Fort Ticonderoga."
From Fort Ticonderoga's Archive Website: The oval shaped piece of wood is a window cap from a window on the east side of the second floor of the West Barracks. The windows on the east side of the building look out onto the parade ground. According to a typed note attached to one side of the piece of wood, the window it was removed from was north of the door where Captain William Delaplace surrendered Fort Ticonderoga to Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold after their early morning raid on May 10th, 1775. The window cap was removed from the ruins of Fort Ticonderoga in 1876. Although William Ferris Pell attempted to preserve the remains of the fort, taking remnants as souvenirs was a popular and acceptable habit in the 19th century. What Victorians saw as taking mementos of the past, we understand today as a destruction of the historical record.

Boston Sports Songs
Hello, Birch here! People may or may not know this, but I am a New Englander by heart. I grew up in a very sport-centered house. My Dad grew up in the era of Larry Bird and Carl Yastrzemski, while Tukka Rask, Tom Brady and David Ortiz graced my television. Sports is still dear to my heart, and it was a way that I could relate to my Dad and be happy.
I remember going over to my Dad's parents. Big Sox fans, as many people are around here. Dad would prep me for the visit by making sure I knew who played what position, what number they were, and how baseball as a whole operated. So when six year old me rattled off sports facts to my Grampy, he was surprised yet elated. "Holy smokes!" He always used to say, and give me the biggest hugs.
Anyways, Dad made sure that I knew about sports and famous moments, past and present. He told me about the Yaz song and the Impossible Dream Season of 1967. He told me about Bobby Orr's famous flying goal and how he and his family reacted. Dad was a sports fan until the very end, and I still try to keep tabs on sports for him. But it feels weird to sit alone on the couch without him there.
Because of Dad's love of sports, I want to teach my family someday about Yaz, Orr, Bird, and the many others that were iconic New England sports figures. Although my Dad isn't here anymore, his love of sports will carry though me, and hopefully to the next generation.
