1999 Jerusalem - Number 11 - Sürpriz - "Reise Nach Jerusalem - Kudüs'e Seyahat"
youtube
Back to the videos and all the way back to Jerusalem for another Ralph Siegel entry. Germany's ever-present schlager-matic songwriter who's written about everything from penguins to Genghis Khan has written another song about peace, given it to a Turkish band and sent it to Jerusalem.
Except it didn't even win in the German national final Countdown Grand Prix. It came second by a large margin to Corinna May, the blind singer who went on to represent Germany at Eurovision in 2002. Her song Hör den Kindern einfach zu (Just Listen to the Children) was disqualified shortly after the final when it was discovered that the song had been released in 1997 by someone else. How these things slip through I don't know.
Luckily there was this in second place and Sürpriz went to Jerusalem with a song about going to Jerusalem. In a very Siegel way the song reference childhood, in this case a game of musical chairs, in which there's always someone left at the end when the music stops with nowhere left to sit. Instead of squabbles, the song says that peace is more important the childish games. The message is barely disguised; it's a subtle as a brick.
It's also a song sent by Germany with Turkish members. The last time Eurovision was in Israel, Turkey boycotted it. There are so many sensitivities here that you might imagine they would be tiptoed around, but no Siegel just goes 'peace everyone' and it was so popular it finished third at Eurovision.
Having said that - it is catchy. The Turkish instrumentation adds to what is essential a hook repeated many times until it insistently burrows its way into your brain via your eardrums. That can't have harmed it. That earworm is so stuck in my brain that it's wriggled its way up to 11th for my songs for 1999. Not too shabby.
Unsurprizingly Sürpriz were one-hit wonders. The band had probably been brought together for Eurovision this year by Siegel and his enablers.

Shitty summary- Finland in Eurovison (and eurovision in general)
Actually ever since I started this blog I've had the idea of making a post for every single Finnish entry and then publishing them as a countdown to either UMK or Esc final, but I've always come to the conclusion that absolutely nobody would care 😄

Eurovision Fact #399:
Tumblr media
Australia's 2023 representative, Voyager, composed an electronic-style version of the "Eurovision theme" 'Te Deum' for the EBU. The 'modern' version of the song had been used during YouTube premiere countdowns on the official Eurovision YouTube channel.
About the experience, the band remarked:
"To be able to forge the original Te Deum theme with some beautiful ambient sounds, ‘80s synths, soaring Floyd-esque guitars and a ramping of suspense was very special. It's a nod to ESCs past, present and future and it elicits that warm feeling of anticipation that we all know and love: 'it's Eurovision time'!"

Warriorvision Nun Contest 2023 planning - part 2
(Following on from : https://www.tumblr.com/thosedangnuns/721850812622684160/warriorvision-nun-contest-planning-post)
-- What is this? 🤔 A Eurovision song contest type event on Twitter (tbd?) culminating in a live space where we play a song for each chosen character and have the audience 'vote' on it. Planned to be the day before the new countdown timer ends. All items below are musings and suggestions are welcome ❤️ --
July 31 - Nomination day.
Make a single tweet for each participant asking for song nominations. https://twitter.com/NunVision account exists. Maybe need some minor graphics? We might have to salt the tweets to begin with a few suggestions.
August 5 - Last day for song nominations.
Result : List of songs for each character.
August 7-12 - Song voting.
Make two tweets a day, one for each character, containing either a poll of all of the songs (or a link to an external poll). Encourage people to vote for not only the 'best' song but the 'most fitting' one for the character.
August 7 - Ava Portugal / Michael Ireland August 8 - Beatrice Finland / Hans Switzerland August 9 - Camila UK / JC Germany August 10 - Yasmine France / Vincent Spain August 11 - Lilith UK / Duretti Italy August 12 - Superion Italy / Salvius the Netherlands
Result : The nominated song for each character.
August 14 - The Final!
A live space (est. 90-120 minutes) where we introduce and play each of the songs. When all songs are played, we play a short recap (10 second clip of each song + the characters name) then provide a voting link. We wait … 15 minutes? - then announce the results dramatically as is tradition. -- QUESTIONS / THOUGHTS - How should we do voting in the nomination round? It is way easier and more user friendly to do a twitter poll, but do we add drama by making not revealing the result until the final show? And is that drama worth it? - How should we do voting in the final round? 12, 10, 8–1 like in the ESC? Should we have a small panel of 'experts' do a small voting round before hand to make it infuriating just like the ESC? - This is a dumb idea and I love it and I can't wait to do it. (I don't suppose you can tag users on here like yo can on twitter?)

2000 Stockholm - Number 25 - E-Rotic - "Queen of Light"
youtube
Remaining in Germany and at the Countdown Grand Prix for an absolute Eurovision banger in an era largely devoid of Eurovision bangers. E-Rortic are stalwarts of the 1990s Eurodance scene. They've been around for long enough to have had a best-of compilation album released in Japan.
This is dance-floor Euroclub music with sexual motifs strewn liberally throughout. The band know their formula, they're led by Lyane Leigh, the titular Queen of Light, although confusingly she's not on stage, having 'left' the band four years earlier but continuing to provide vocals for all of E-Rotic's recordings after that point. The singer on stage is Jeanette Macchi-Meier who normally lip synchs Lyane's voice. Here is the one and only time she sings live. She's not great, but neither is she bad.
The song is not a departure for E-Rotic, full of pounding beats and synths it fits right into the Eurodance meta squarely. If this had been entered in most other national finals of the year it would probably have been in contention for the win. Unfortunately for E-Rotic, they were first on in Countdown Grand Prix 2000, up against Stefan Raab and all manner of other diversions. They finished only 6th.
What this song does demonstrate is that perhaps more than any other EBU member national broadcaster in 2000, NDR has its finger on the pulse of Eurovision. It's ripped up the rulebook of the 1990s and is aiming squarely at the televote. Many of the songs are either floor-fillers, outrageous or have other controversy surrounding them. Maybe they needed the proceeds that televoting brings in too. 1.5 million televotes were cast in this national final.

I've just put in my votes for esc250 this year, so here they are!
12. Mall – Albania 2018 10. Dansevise – Denmark 1963 8. Viszlát Nyár – Hungary 2018 7. Midnight Gold – Georgia 2016 6. Molitiva – Serbia 2007 5. Cha Cha Cha – Finland 2023 4. Silêncio e tanta gente – Portugal 1984 3. Aijā – Latvia 2023 2. Stripper – San Marino 2022 1. D.G.T – Romania 2023
I stuck with my usual top five – I briefly considered dropping Midnight Gold a couple of places so I could give even more points to Cha Cha Cha, but I expect Käärijä to do well in the ranking this year without those extra two points! Even so, I still wanted to put it right at the top of my remaining five places – I’m still utterly obsessed with this song! Also from this year I wanted to give points to Aijā as my second favourite, and I also ended up putting D.G.T. on my list. Even though I feel mixed about the version that ended up getting performed at the contest, I still love the original and I’ve been listening to it a lot since May, so I feel it earned a point from me.
Usually when I do this ranking, I tend to swap out my favourite songs in the lower positions, however when I was trying to decide which of my favourite classic entries I should replace Silêncio e tanta gente with, I realised that I somehow like it even more than I did when I put it on the list last year! I also kept Stripper on the list, because, hey, it’s my ranking, and I still love that song a lot from last year.
I expect Cha Cha Cha to easily make top 10 at minimum in the final ranking, and I’m also hoping for Aijā to do well, considering that it seemed to have plenty of fans within the esc fandom. I would be overjoyed, but very surprised, if any of my other bottom five made it – Neither Silêncio e tanta gente or Stripper were in the top 250 last year, and part of why I wanted to give some love to D.G.T. is because I suspect it might not get much from elsewhere.
I’m very interested to see how this year’s ranking will turn out! Obviously I’m hoping for Cha Cha Cha to take the top spot, and I think it does have a legitimate chance, it has a lot of fan love and swept the televote this year. However, Loreen is still super popular with a lot of fans, and she is our reigning winner, so of course you can't rule Tattoo out. With the nature of the ranking, it doesn’t matter if the song is divisive, all that matters is if enough people will vote for it, so I’m sure it will still do very well, though I have no idea if it’ll top the ranking or not. I could even see a scenario where Euphoria regains the number one position, it’s still a good song that’s beloved by a lot of people.
Personally I got tired of Euphoria winning year after year, and enjoyed the shake up with Slo Mo taking top spot last year, although it does mean that we can’t get the scenario of Loreen finally being knocked off the top spot… by Loreen. Since that can’t happen, I’d prefer for someone other than her to be number one this year, ideally Käärijä of course, but it’ll be interesting to see if Chanel has momentum to set up a new winning streak, or if we’re going to get another change at the top. I honestly cannot call it, so I’ll be very interested listening to the countdown this New Year’s Eve!

So... First semifinal thoughts
The countdown was the most stressful moment of my life. Good job
Laura Pausini in a fluorescent pink gown really caught me off guard bestie,, like, do I care about her? No. Do I care about the fact that she was dressed like that? Of course. Don't know what it's giving but it's giving
The opening number? Chef's kiss. Amazing. Showstopping.
The italian commentary sucked. It's a song contest. Let me hear the songs. Non me ne può fregare un emerito cazzo delle vostre opinioni e di quanta gente conoscete in quei paesi. Porco due.
Albania my beloved. Stunning performance. I was fully expecting Ronela's head to start flying way like a helicopter. Also I am not immune to bi lighting.
So. LATVIA. YOU HAVE NO IDEA THE EXPERIENCE OF HEARING A WHOLE CROWD OF PEOPLE SCREAM "PUSSY" ON LIVE TELEVISION. Honey they did you so dirty you are literally the most beautiful country. Love you. You are my light in the dark, my heat when I shiver in cold, all that. Icons.
Monika was nice but damn this is eurovision not your chill concert. Put some pizzazz, some swagger in there
Same thing for Switzerland but DAMN I am now no longer caring whatever people say. Was it boring? Probably. Do I give a shit? No. It has my heart.
LPS are goddamn nice pls let me just take the adoption papers.
So. Ukraine. Their song was SO GOOD DAMN FUCK. Killed me. Anime nosebleed style. I swear the vibes were immaculate. I'm not saying my money's on them but it also kinda is.
Bulgaria's song was very funky
S10 is so good it's unfair
Moldova's performance. Now. That was the greatest most fun power move ever. Congratulations. Damn.
AH GOD I SWEAR PORTUGAL HAS WON THE LIFE LOTTERY OR SOMETHING SAUDADE SAUDADE IS LITERALLY THAT SONG THAT EVERYONE USES IN SAD BITTERSWEET EDITS AND THAT EVERYONE PUTS ON DURING THEIR DEPRESSIVE EPISODES IT'S MAGNIFICENT.
Croatia has the straightest performance and yet. Fun.
I mean Denmark was nice but it didn't give me much so it's probably gonna be that kind of song that you get into like 2 months later
Now. Austria's was a bop I swear. Nothing captures the feeling more than this:
Italians: have been massacred and ruled over and tortured by the Austrian empire for centuries
Me, an italian: LET ME BE YOUR HALO
Ehm. Now onto ICELAND. They were so poggers. Immaculate vibes. Love them. Also they waved this huge ass trans flag on live television and that should make them win automatically. Also the song was so very good.
Greece was nice, liked more the performance than the song but isn't that the point of esc really?
Norway had me on the floor. Furry daft punk was the best thing since eat your salad tbh. Also I now need to know if wolf actually eat fruit.
Armenia's fun cos the whole song's eh but the chorus have me screaming with her I swear.
If I remember correctly during the performance at the end L'amour toujours was in there and I think people thought they were allo stadio a guardare la partita di calcio (se vede che non l'ho mai vista una partita di calcio eh?)
The whole thing was so very gender
Also Laura said porca vacca on live television. Stupenda. Mi mancava.
Overall spectacular night. Loved it.
Extremely disappointing that none of my friends have had the time to watch it, but I mean I only had the time cos I didn't study bECAUSE THE NATION AND THE CONTINENT COME BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE.

StarKnife / Starmimi Week 2023
---⭐️🔪---
Thursday, June 1st : Dance
Happy Pride Month, enjoy some slow dancing! Sorry if this is a little messy. Late night writing bdgvxdg
---⭐️🔪---
" May I have this dance? ~ ♡ "
Starline asked with an eager smile, his webbed hand offering itself to the octopus.
Mimic froze dead in his tracks. Hesitating to respond.
" I don't... I don't really dance. "
" It's not that difficult, here. "
Starline replied as he proceeded to gently pull Mimic into a dance.
While carefully wrapping one arm around the assassin’s cloaked back, Starline nodded at Mimic to do the same.
Once each had one arm wrapped around the other, Starline took Mimic’s suctioned hand into a soft grasp.
" Now, just follow my lead. Alright? "
Mimic gave a subtle nod in agreement as he kept his gaze to the floor. Anxiously watching his tentacles curl and brush against the metalic floor.
With the hushed speech of a countdown, Starline began to guide the dance. Slowly moving his feet to the rhythm of the music that played from a small speaker on a nearby table.
The music was calming and slow-paced, almost lullaby-esc in its melody.
Now, despite the required movements being simple, there was still a struggle on Mimic’s end. Misplaced steps, small trip ups over his own tentacles.
Yet Starline never said much of it. A small lighthearted chuckle may escape his bill here and there, but besides that, he was quiet.
" See, it's not so bad. "
" I guess not... but dont expect me to say yes to this again. "
" What? Afraid you're making a fool of yourself? "
The doctor teased with a smirk.
" Shut up. "
The assassin lightly snapped.
Despite the tone and words that left his beak, Mimic didn't feel that much worry. Maybe it was the soothing music or the gentle embrace,
but something about this moment felt safe.
Something about being around Starline felt safe.
Mimic didn't know why or how he felt this way, but something within him never wanted it to end ~ ♡
