Last year, a report from the European Committee of Social Rights of the Council of Europe concluded that Portugal continues to violate the right to decent housing for the Roma community residing in the country… According to the the country's High Commission for Migration, there were 37,000 Portuguese Roma in 2017, but the number is disputed by other sources and some estimate it to be at least three times higher.

This week’s newsletter from AthensLive is out:
*   Déjà vu
*   Dear MP, you’ve got a trap SMS
*   A little child just died from dehydration in 21st century Europe
- are the main headlines to be found inside this highly informative weekly must-read from and about Greece.
The European Parliament conducted open hearings over the ‘Greek Watergate,’ while in Greece governmental cover-up efforts intensified to the point they became blatant.
New wiretapping revealed: SYRIZA lawmaker is the new victim of Predator. Coincidentally (not), he was involved in revealing EYP's wrong-doings.
A 4-year-old refugee child died from dehydration due to a delayed Malta-Greece SAR operation.
By reading the newsletter - and even better by subscribing or becoming a supporting member - you will also find a lot of links to other sources and to events and developments that you will not otherwise come across. And even if some of them are in Greek only, by using a Translator in your browser, it will be easy to read no matter how familiar you are with the Greek language.
It cannot be recommended strongly enough to read and share this week’s updates on the events and developments in Greece here:

Vučić announced threat to Serbia
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić stated on Tuesday, 26 March, that the country would soon face “the challenges ahead,” according to Serbian media
Right now, it’s not easy for me to say what news we’ve had in the last 48 hours. In the coming days, I will inform the people of Serbia about all the challenges ahead. It will be tough as always. We will fight. Serbia will win.
Commenting on the country’s possible withdrawal from the Council of Europe, Vučić recently declared that if Kosovo’s application for membership was approved, it would mean Serbia’s exit. The president rejected the possibility of recognising Kosovo’s independence despite diplomatic efforts between Priština and Belgrade.
He reiterated that Serbia would not allow Kosovo to become a member of the United Nations or any UN-related organisations, institutions or agencies and would not consider such proposals.
Vučić’s announcement coincided with the statement of Russia’s first deputy permanent representative to the UN, Dmitry Polyansky. According to him, Russia again requested a meeting of the UN Security Council on the NATO operation in Yugoslavia.

PACE Committee on Equality and Non-Discrimination on combating racism and intolerance made the following statement
Tumblr media
“The International day for the elimination of racial discrimination is an opportunity to reflect on the progress achieved in countering racism at global level, and on how to tackle the challenges that people of African descent still face. This year, as the International Decade for People of African Descent 2015-2024, proclaimed by the General Assembly of the United Nations, draws to a close, the picture is far from satisfying.
In 2020, the violent death of George Floyd at the hand of the police and the widespread protests that followed on both sides of the Atlantic sparked awareness of the extent of Afrophobia and the need to tackle it. A window of opportunity seemed to be open for legislators, policy makers and the society at large to seize. The developments since then are not always positive. Deeply entrenched racism endures. New forms of prejudice targeting people of African descent emerge. The current political landscape is a reason for concern, with racist and xenophobic populist movements resisting progress and undermining the struggle for inclusiveness and respect.
As members of the Committee on equality and non-discrimination, we reaffirm on this occasion our commitment to counter all forms of racism. Referring to Resolution 2389 (2021) on Combating Afrophobia, or anti-Black racism, in Europe, we reiterate our call on fellow politicians and public authorities to counter racism in all its forms, including at institutional level, and multiple and intersectional discrimination; recognise the contribution of people of African descent to Europe’s development and culture; and to recognise the negative impact of colonialism, enslavement and the transatlantic slave trade.
Finally, we reiterate our support to the No Hate Parliamentary Alliance. We believe in the Charter of European political parties for a non-racist and inclusive society, based on political parties self-regulation power, as an important tool to prevent and counter racial discrimination.”
