Left is a normal quail egg. Middle is a double yolk quail egg. Right is the egg I found today. Yowch!
Normal, today vs large chicken egg
I had to double check that all my hens were still alive, that's one hell of a big quail egg. I'm really hoping that inside of it is another, smaller quail egg. Shell and all.
me, kneeling down and speaking very empathetically: listen i know you want water. i'm giving you the water right now. please i'm begging don't knock it over again.
my quail, doing a perfect imitation of a car alarm and immediately knocking over their water:
For anyone thinking about getting quail and have read that one of the great things about quail is that they are quiet. Hens are quiet, roosters are not!
A PSA brought to you by a quail owner who gets to wake up every morning to their rooster crowing
Quails being especially noisy in the last few days. Nougat (the brown one) and Oreo (the black one) are especially angry when I bring food for some reason. It's like they demand it, even though the food container is never empty, and I have 3 different ones placed in the aviary. Maybe something animal went by and agitated them again.
Me, quietly reading an article titled "Top ten reasons to keep Coturnix quail" hmmmm . . my daughter is a bad influence. This is definitely her fault . . .
It's incredibly difficult to get a photo of them, because my phone keeps trying to color correct them to white. But I figured out it takes half a second to think about it, so if I whip the camera over onto them and snap the pic without any hesitation, it will take the pic as it first sees it, without adjustment.
But they are SO pretty. The last hatch I did in the fall is laying age now, as well, and there are a couple of brown layers and the rest blue. I'm going to have to do an exclusively brown layer hatch, since it looks like only three actually were girls and nicely sized. I'll start pulling eggs to hatch starting next month. Since Indie went home, I won't be hatching any peafowl this year, so time for lots of quail!
