My tongue runs rivers to the Cottonwood and I would deify the sands on its frozen shore. The blue jays flutter about parabolic the iris an air of whipped cream atop a raspberry life-raft, you run your fingers through my hair.
Those eyes neon a strip mall waiting with winter blustery all the things I wish to say. Maybe the matcha is ritual quality, like stunning trifecta of mango ripened couplets rolling over those gold rimmed glasses.
In the fields where prairie flowers hurl sonnets honeycombed your vocal chords en garde the white worm making fallen farms their homes. And it was always you, lock land and fruitless, the multiple lifetime grin shimmer.

Tuesday
Diane and I popped out of our sleeping bags around 6am so we could go back down the Cottonwood Trail to see a few birds that we couldn’t find on Monday. We spotted yellow warblers, a Baltimore Oriole, spotted towhee, eastern kingbird, and a ton of robins! We also saw a few mule deer and rabbits! Then the mosquitoes drove us back to camp.

Bunny rabbit!
Once back, we quickly ate breakfast and packed our gear so that we would be on time for our Cretaceous Fossil Tour. The three hour walk took us into the restricted part of the park to see a fossil rich area. Along the way, the paleontologist who led the tour described the geology of the area and what made it so fossil rich. At our ultimate destination we were able to see fossils that were exposed to the elements thanks to erosion. 77 known Centrosaurus had been discovered in that area and it is believed that 10 times that number died in a single event and remain to be discovered.

Hot sun across the badlands.
Not only did we see an old dig site but but we were able to walk around and see and touch fossils that were just sitting on the ground. It almost looked like every stone we saw was a fossil!

Everywhere fossils!!!
On the tour we also met a couple from the UK that was hitting all the dinosaur hotspots. He was a retired geologist and was checking off his bucket list of places to see. There was also a woman who was traveling with her wife, campervaning their way to the Yukon and the NW Territories from Phoenix. We had visited many of the same places as she had been over the years.
After we left the park we decided to hotel it rather than camp. I had a lot of prep work to do for the upcoming bike ride. It also gave us a chance to see Calgary. We ended up eating downtown in a touristy area near the business district. There were quite a few places to eat and drink although all the retail shops had closed by 6pm.

Stevens Street Mall.

Space Needle downtown.
We ate at a placed called Barbarella. The food and drinks were quite good. The people watching was fun as well. There was quite a bit of strutting and preening going on.
All-in-all, a good day in Canada!

Saw this spiffy bowl at the Dakota Flea Market today in the old Sears space at Gateway Mall. The bowler — That’s what you call them, right? — said it was cottonwood but he doesn’t know why or how the wood ended up groovy like that. $250 and it could be yours.

This is a great essay published by the Sierra Club, addressing how important small chunks of public lands are important to us. The author tells us about his early adventures in one of the forest preserves of the Cook County (Illinois) Forest Preserve District. These preserves ring Chicago, are sometimes are in the city proper, and run through several suburban areas. The total amount of protected area is about 70,000 acres, or 11% of the footprint of Cook County. We live a block from one of the units, Thatcher Woods, which has been a source of friction in our community lately, with most of us grateful to have the resource right there, including its wildlife, while the nature haters, mostly old people and the younger privileged princes and princesses, are pushing to have the deer slaughtered because they eat the hosta and poop on the front lawn.
Here’s the essay in full. It’s a short essay, but a long post because it’s worth a full read.
As a 10-year-old in the 1970s, I found myself marooned in the vast sprawl of suburban Chicago. Seeking more inspiration and adventure than the strip malls, giant parking lots, and endless tracts of split-level homes on cul-de-sacs could provide, I would get on my trusty green Murray bike with the banana seat and ride the two miles or so to Linne Woods. This little nature reserve was the nearest outpost of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County. In 1916, the same year the National Park Service was founded, the forest preserves were conceived in a bold act of civic devotion. They eventually grew to 70,000 protected acres or 11 percent of the second-most populous county in the United States. Today, these forests, prairies, savannas, and wetlands form a significant biodiverse refuge in a sea of asphalt sprawl.
While Linne Woods was barely more than 100 acres and surrounded by six-lane arterial roads, fast-food restaurants, and vinyl-clad houses, it was still, to me at least, a mighty citadel, bursting with mystery and magic and biological integrity. Towering old forests of oaks, hickories, and sugar maples were cheerfully carpeted in spring with trillium and mayapples. Growing in the bottomlands along the Chicago River were mammoth cottonwoods, which seemed to me as big as sequoias, where large mobs of raucous crows would roost. Along the western edge, the forest gave way to sunny open prairies and brushy meadows that filled the humid summer air with the scent of wild bergamot and Virginia mountain mint, both of which grew profusely. Here the natural world cast its spell on me and led me to be its lifelong student. Here I wandered aimlessly for hours and once tried to fish (unsuccessfully of course) with a stick and a string and a safety pin. Here I taught myself to identify trees and once fell through the ice of the river on a 10-degree day—and lived to tell about it.
Later, after I procured the driver's license that conferred full citizenship on a child of the suburbs, I branched out and began to explore forest preserve units further afield. Later still, as an adult, I have had the privilege to trek and tramp through America’s glorious public lands—from the dark, dripping rainforests of the Pacific Northwest to the swamps and bayous of the South, and from the austere canyonlands of the Colorado plateau to the emerald forests and still, clear waters of the Northwoods. Mine has been a life defined by my connection to wild land; it's something I have devoted my academic life to as well.
I owe all of this to those humble patches of accessible public land near my house in the third-largest metro area in the country. As a suburban kid with city-bred parents and grandparents, I had very little exposure to wild nature. We didn’t have any sort of family traditions in the great outdoors. There were no camping trips, no grand tours of the national parks, no summer camps in the woods. My passion for wild nature all started from my bike trips to the urban woods—public woods, collectively held and open to all.
The Forest Preserve District strives mightily to incorporate an equity framework in all of its efforts to connect residents to its parks. Even as a 10-year-old, I could intuit that Linne Woods belonged to me (along with everyone else), and no one could tell me to scram. That made me possessive of them in the best sort of way. I was always shoving litter into my back pocket and later, in my twenties, I became a restoration volunteer on nearby preserves, cutting invasive plants and collecting seeds. It is only today—as a political scientist who grapples with issues of democracy, equity, and civic values—that I can more precisely identify what I only knew in my gut as a kid: These public places bind us to things larger than ourselves. They bind us to human community, the natural world, and collective values in ways that enhance responsibility and devotion and love. This is something we crave and need desperately.
Public lands do this partly because they are a kind of fountain from which issues a continuous flow of outrageously valuable things—treasures that are at once biological, aesthetic, cultural, psychological, spiritual, and historical. To be connected to such a place is to be a collective account-holder of a treasure trove more valuable, both tangibly and intangibly, than a million Fort Knoxes. But unlike a dead bank account, you must actively and vigilantly love and protect this treasure, because there are always those who don’t believe in sharing.

Would you guys like me to continue writing these for you? Please give a read and let me know.
Chapter One: Memories.
I remember looking at her. Looking at her hurt. The day she skinned her knee while playing on the playground at Cottonwood Elementary. I watched as she cried in pain while the blood was slowly running down her leg while she was in agony. We used to be best friends and I was always right there with her. “Jeydon, it hurts really bad,” she said to me with more emotion in her voice than I could ever handle. But that didn’t stop me. I didn’t stop being by her side until the school nurse made me go back to class while they fixed up her knee. “No, I need to be with Ava, I can’t leave Ava.” I said while they brought me back to Mrs. Joneson’s class. I didn’t work anymore that day; I remember how upset I actually was.
I looked over at her while she was finishing up her paper in class. She was wearing her favorite sundress she and her friends went shopping for last week at the mall. I overheard her talking about it when she came in on the first day of school this year. We don’t talk much anymore, well, at least not since middle school when she moved away from me, and met a new clique who didn’t want anything to do with me. After all these years, I’ve done nothing but watch over her and made sure she was alright. I’ll never break the promise we made the day before she moved.
“Jeydon, promise me you’ll never stop looking after me,” she said with sorrow while turning her face away from me while a tear trickled down her cheek. “You’re my best friend, Jeydon, and you always will be. Just please look after me. Even if we start drifting, never stop watching and making sure that I’ll be okay.” I didn’t know what to say and all I did was pull her into the biggest hug while she cried in my arms as I started tearing along with her. “I promise to always protect you in any situation, and I’ll never break that promise. I mean it Ava.” I said in a whispering tone while she just held onto me and cried as hard as she could.
“Jeydon, pay attention!” The worst teacher, Mrs. Taylor, said as she put the whole class's attention towards me. I looked at the board which read “Future and everything within it.” I shook my head trying not to laugh and then there was a knock at the classroom door.
Mrs. Taylor opened the door and everyone looked as the principal said “I need Ava to come to my office right now. Is she present?” The teacher nodded and called for her as I looked right at her. She looked in pain and had a lot of regret inside of her aching soul as she got up and grabbed her bags. “What happened?” I looked at her with a puzzled look and all she did was shake her head as she slightly whispers “don’t worry about it.” I watched her as she walked out and door as it shut behind her. I started getting anxious, and nervous as minutes went by until the bell finally rang and I bolted out the door running to the principal's office.
“You’re in a lot of trouble Ava.” Mr. Maeser said while staring Ava dead in the eyes. “I don’t think so. I didn’t do anything wrong.” She replied crossing her arms over her chest as she rolled her eyes. “Ava, stop giving attitude.” I whispered while shaking my head in anger. I stood out in the hallway for a good 20 minutes before she came out of the office as she looked at me grabbing her keys out of her bag and walking out the front door. “Where are you going Ava?” I asked questioning why she was leaving so early. “Why would I stay if I’m going to get accused of something I didn’t do?” She replied shrugging her shoulders as she walked to her car.
I sighed as I walked into the last hour of the day because all I could think about was what Ava was doing, and if she was okay. I’ve never worried about anybody as much as her. The anxiety I have inside of me started to take me over as I leaped out of my seat and ditched the last hour that I had of the school day. My mind had so many thoughts running through it and I just couldn’t handle it. “Jeydon, where are you going?” My youngest brother Jake said to me in a really angry tone. “You were supposed to walk with me home today.” I shrugged my shoulders ignoring him as I walked out the school doors. I’ve never thought about ditching class until today. And today might not be the only day that I leave.
You could hear my teacher asking where I was from outside of the school through the window. “Does anybody know where Jeydon is?” She asked everyone in a very concerned tone. I almost felt a little sympathy for leaving until she started talking about essays. “I just saw him in the hallway, I don’t know where he could’ve gone.” Sarah said to the teacher in a very shy voice. She was the new girl, but she was the kind of shy where you could hear her clearly from across the hall. I just shrugged and kept walking down the road towards the skatepark where all the drug addicts hung around since none of them are in school since they all dropped out. I could hear them all talking about the upcoming party that’s apparently going to be “the best.” The parties usually have a ton underage drinking, smoking, and the usual. I’m not big on that, until I heard Ava’s name in the conversation.
“You know that Ava girl right? The one who’s shorter than everyone in her class. She seems like the innocent one. We should invite her to this party dude.” He said as anger took over and I walked over to them. “You think Ava is going to your party?” I said with the most angrified tone in my voice. “What’s it to you? It’s not like you’re important to her.” He said and I could feel my heart drop and my voice started getting shaky. “I’ve known her since we were little. She’s not into parties.” I said in almost tears as he took his phone out and called someone. It sounded like Ava. “Hey, you want to come to a party this weekend?” He said while I stared at him and he grinned at me as he hung up the phone and smirked at me. “Ava is coming to this party this weekend. She’s going to have a blast.” He winked at me as he pushed my shoulder and my first instinct turned to punching him as hard as I could in the face. I’ve never felt so much terror come into me all at once as all of them surrounded me. “You’re going to regret that, punk.” He said as he kicked me in the side and punched me in the nose. The pain I felt was excruciating and I could feel my nose breaking. I screamed out in terror as I tried to fight back swinging at Parker. “Ava is not going to be there. You’re not going to do anything with or to her, and I swear to god if I hear you touched her Parker, I will personally rip out every little bit of your soul. “You can’t do anything to me. You’re too weak.” He started laughing at me and then spit on me as my nose started bleeding. Thoughts started pouring through my head as the anger built up inside of me. “I mean it.” I said under my breath so he couldn’t hear me as I got up and started walking away from them holding my nose.
{Ava’s POV}
“I can’t believe you Ava!” My mom yelled at me while I walked right past her up the stairs. “You need to listen more often. You’ve changed. You used to do great in school, and you used to never get in trouble.” She yelled at me tapping her feet at the bottom of the stairs. I don’t really know what I’m supposed to say to her considering I’m not the same young little girl that she knew a few years ago. I slammed the door shut as I went into my room. I got a call earlier and I was invited to a party by Parker. Of course I’m going, I mean, who wouldn’t go? I started getting ready just as my phone started ringing. “Hello?” I asked in a slightly angry tone considering they ruined my thinking mode for the party. “Is this Ava?” A shy males voice came through my phone speaker. “Yeah, it’s Ava. Who’s this?” I asked in curiosity. “It’s Jeydon. I’m sorry for calling you on short notice.” He said and my heart started beating faster. I’ve never thought about Jeydon more than a friend. I think it’s weird that I get these weird feelings for him. I don’t even like him in that sort of way. “Jeydon, What’s up? Something wrong?” I asked in a curious tone. He hasn’t called me since the day that I moved away from him.
“No, there’s nothing wrong. Are you going to a party tonight?” Well that’s weird. I just got asked by Parker not to long ago. How would he know by now? “Yes Jeydon, I’m going. Why?” I asked puzzled. “Don’t go. Parker is going to try something on you. I know he will. I’m just looking out for you like you always told me to. I don’t trust this man around you Ava.” Jeydon was talking extremely fast as if something was bothering him. I could tell something was bothering him. I mean, who couldn’t tell? He always talks fast and you can’t understand him when something’s wrong. “Jeydon, tell me what’s wrong. I know something’s wrong. I can always tell. So spill.” I said with concern in my tone. “Parker punched me in the face for saying he won’t do anything to you or with you.” He said breathing heavily. “He broke my nose.” I was shocked when I heard that and after a awhile it turned to anger.
{Jeydon’s POV}
I don’t know how I’m feeling, but I do know that my mind, and heart were both racing faster than any sports car with a turbo in it. The fact that I called Ava and it’s been so long since I’ve called her. I haven’t since the day she moved away from me. I’m glad that I did call her though, I miss her. Ava was my best friend since we were younger, and I’ve never thought bad about her, no matter what she’s done to me or anybody else. I could never do anything to hurt her. “Jeydon!” My little brother Jake yelled while running after me as I was walking down the street to turn away from the school. “Jake, what are you doing? Go back to school, and get back to class. I don’t want you to get in trouble!” I yelled at him while I kept walking. “You should be in class to, what are you doing?” He asked while catching up to me. He tugged on my sweatshirt as I continued walking. “Go back to school Jake.” I said turning around and looking at him. “Jeydon, you need to go to school too though. Mom’s going to kill you. You know that!” He yelled at me and I pushed him to the side as I continued to walk away from him.
“I’m just looking out for you. And you know that. Dad would be disappointed in you.” He said under his breath. I could still hear him but I didn’t say anything because my dad died a long time ago when I was little due to alcohol poisoning. “Don’t talk about dad Jake. He’s gone. He’ll always be gone. He’s not coming back.” I said as my heart started breaking. I was really close with my dad. I trusted him with everything. My family and I tried to get him to stop drinking, but he never listened. He had an anger against my mother when he would get extremely drunk. He’s abused her to the point she was hospitalized for a month and he had shattered her arm all the way from the wrist to the shoulder. I can’t really say anything though. Mom’s done the same thing to me since I was little. “Jeydon.” He said to me with a tear in his eyes. “I love you. Just know that. Everyone loves you.” He turned around and walked back to the school and I couldn’t do anything but just stand there until I found a spot on the side of the road where I could just sit and think about everything that’s happened throughout my life. Every bad thing that I’ve ever done is just running through my head. I cross my arms, buried my head into them as I started to cry. I’ve been in and out of foster care since I was younger. My mom was always on drugs, or she wouldn’t feed us for the longest time. I’ve practically raised Jake since he was a baby. I’m going to do everything I can to make Jake happy. Everybody happy actually. I could care less about my feelings.
Once I got home, I grabbed my skateboard, bat, and anything I could put in my bag for self defense. (Not that I need anything, I can handle myself.) The time has been going by extremely slow today for no reason at all. It’s been making me anxious all day too. My day has been totally crap ever since I left school. Apparently the school is also looking for me because a “friend” of mine decided to tell the school cop that I ditched. I’ve been sitting around caught up in my own thoughts, and it’s very frustrating because I’m not able to do anything about them as of right now. I can’t stop thinking about what Parker is going to do tonight. Everything just keeps getting worse day by day, and I can’t seem to change it.
(Ava’s POV)
Things just keep getting worse for me. I’m stuck with an abusive boyfriend who flirts with everything that walks. I’m addicted to being high on whatever my body can get. My life has just been going down hill since a couple years ago when my father died. He died of lung cancer and that happened from smoking cigarettes every single day. I tried to get him to quit, and you know how that goes? Nobody listens. But I can’t be mad. I don’t listen to people when they try to get me sober from everything. Nothing works. I’m too strung into it that I just can’t seem to quit. It’s bad, and I know this. But there’s nothing anybody can do. I can’t even do anything. I wish I could though. I need to find somebody who’s willing to go through and help me with it. Even if it kills me trying to stop. I started getting ready for the party, because god knows everybody has to look good for a party. Well, I always look good. I don’t ever have to try hard. I can tell guys drool over me just from walking by them. I sound conceited and cocky, but that’s just how I am. Nothing can change that. I was born this way. I start putting on my black skin tight strapless dress. I haven’t worn this dress in over a year, only because my boyfriend has a problem with it. But I don’t care only because he’s so abusive. Maybe I’ll be lucky and find someone so I can drop him tonight. I’m sick of the daily beatings when he gets mad at me for crap I didn’t do. It gets irritating sometimes. I’m going to try my best to change it. I’m going to find a way to be happy again. “Ava, get down here this instant!” My mom yells at me as I’m coming out almost half naked because the dress isn’t pulled all the way up yet. “What do you want mom? Just leave me alone. I need space.” I said as I’m trying to pull the dress all the way up to my chest. “Why are you dressed like that? You can’t leave dressed like that. What and where are you going? Shouldn’t you be in school?” She said to me in a very angry tone. But I don’t really take it to offence when she yells at me. I don’t need her in my life. I roll my eyes in a very annoyed manner. “I got suspended again. But that’s none of your business. And I’m going to a party, and there’s nothing you can do about it.” I’m tired of my mom treating me like a little kid. I’m almost eighteen years old. I don’t need to be questioned or babied about anything I’m doing. I’m grown up now, and she doesn’t know how to let go. She grabbed ahold of my arms as I walked down the stairs to look for my heels and makeup. “Ava, you’re not going to this party. You know I worry about what could happen to you.” She says to me as I roll my eyes at her again. “I can take care of myself.” I grabbed my heels and makeup and went out to my car as I finished getting ready for the night that could change my entire adulthood.
{Jeydon’s POV}
It’s finally time. I walk out of my house as I jump onto my skateboard and start heading towards Parker’s house for the party. My night, I can tell, isn’t going to be great. As I get towards Parker’s, my heart start beating faster than anything in the world. Ava just pulled up in her black Dodge Charger. She’s wearing a black skin tight dress. You can see everything. The way her body moves, and the way it defines her curves. She curled her hair and put a black bandana around the top of her head. I watched as Parker came out of the house towards her. “Ava, you made it.” He says to her with the biggest smile on his face as he goes in for a hug.
{Ava’s POV}
Parker hugged me. The cologne he’s wearing smells like the really manly cologne at Hollister. Since when did he wear cologne? “Hey Ava.” He said to me as my heart started skipping a beat. “Hey Parker.” I said with a grin on my face as I walked into the house knowing that tonight should be really great.
{Jeydon’s POV}
They hugged. She looked like she enjoyed it. I’ll stick around for awhile. Maybe she won’t need me here. I told her what he did to me. She’s acting as if I didn't say anything. I shrugged my shoulders as I went towards Parker’s as a group of people came towards me. “Jeydon, why did you come here?” One of the guys said to me as he shoved me to the ground. “I came here for Ava. I’m not dumb. I know what you assholes want to do to her.” I said as I stood back up and shoved him back. “You can’t push me around anymore.” I picked up my skateboard and I whipped it towards his face, knocking him to the ground. “You deserved that.”
I smirked and walked into Parker’s house looking for Ava. “Jeydon, why are you here?” A younger girl looked at me as she shook her head at me. “I’m looking for a friend of mine. Do you know where Ava is?” I asked in a concerned, but relaxed tone. “She went upstairs to the bathroom with a group of people.” She reassured a good look at me smiling. “Do you know if she’s okay, and if I leave she’ll be okay?” I asked shrugging my shoulders staring at her. “She’ll be fine. I’ll be watching her for you. Don’t worry.” She smiled at me and I started walking for the door. I’ve got this gut feeling where I know something will go wrong. But I trust her. I have to trust her. What else can I do? I left Parker’s house holding my skateboard.
{Ava’s POV}
I don’t know why Parker is being so sweet to me. He’s never this nice. He just wants something from me. I don’t really mind that he’s being nice to me. He’s a good guy in his heart. I know he is. I leaned over the counter to rinse off my nose since it was bleeding. My nose bleeds constantly now and there’s nothing I can do about it. “Ava, what are you doing in there?” Layla banged on the bathroom door at me. I wiped my nose and opened the door. “Come in quick, but shut the door right away. I don’t need anybody seeing this.” I said while putting out a line on the sink. “Ava, don’t don’t do this. We’ve tried to help you so many times. How do you think Jeydon feels?” She looked at me with worry and I just shook my head. “He doesn’t know, and he won’t know either.” I used a straw to breathe is all into my nose and my nose started bleeding again. “Ava, you need to tell him. Maybe he can help you. I care about you. You know that Ava.” I shook my head as a tear went down my face.
I heard a loud bang on the bathroom door. “Ava, get out here now!” He yelled at me. “I’m a little busy here Trevor.” I said towards my boyfriend with a tear strolling down my face. “Ava, stay calm. He’ll eventually go away.” Layla wrapped her arm around mine to try to reassure that I’ll be okay. But I wasn’t okay. I’m never okay when he’s around. “Get your ass out here right now Ava!” He banged on the door really hard and was yelling extremely loud as the tears started pouring out of my eyes and down my cheeks. “Ava, don’t go out there.” Layla said to me trying to make me feel better as I pulled my arm away from her and opened the door for Trevor. “You’re taking drugs again? What did I say to you about that? You need to quit!” He smacked me as hard as he could in the face causing my cheek to bruise and for me to instantly drop onto the door. “Ava!” Layla yelled towards me as my head smacked the wall. “You really shouldn’t have done that Trevor.” Parker yelled while running towards Trevor and punching him straight in the face. You could hear the impact as he fell to the ground. “Ava, you’ll be okay.” He said while picking me up in his arms and carrying me to his room and laying me on his bed. “Parker, you didn’t need to do that. He’ll come after you now, and it’s all my fault.” I started to cry and move into a ball while the blood ran down my cheek onto his blanket. “I did it for a reason. You deserve to be happy, and not with some punk who hits you every day if you don’t do as he tells you. You are your own person Ava. You need freedom too.” He said while kissing my forehead and wiping the blood off onto his dark black and red plaid shirt. “Thank you Parker.” I whispered as I slowly started to fall in and out into a coma. “Ava, stay awake. You can do it. Stay awake. I’m right here.” He held me closer to him trying to keep me awake. “Layla!” He yelled and she came running into his room. “Call the ambulance.” She pulled out her phone and called the ambulance. “You need to get here now. Please. My friend is unconscious. Her boyfriend hit her really hard. She’s bleeding. You need to hurry!” She screamed into the phone as loud as she could as the tears started streaming down her face.
