Gothikana
Tumblr media
A 5 ⭐ read for me | It had a dark and spooky atmosphere without being scary which I loved. Vad could be annoying although I was warned, he was supposed like that and he grew on me. LOVED CORVINA. Personally, I didn't expect the twist. There were questions left open but not in a way that had me disappointed about the ending. I also really loved the setting. A mysterious boarding school in the mountains with secrets that get uncovered

Gothikana: A Dark, Spicy Story Shrouded in Fog & Mystery
Tumblr media
I'd never read a book that was specifically labeled "Dark Academia" before. While it sits squarely in the larger Young Adult section, Gothikana by RuNyx is a novel that falls perfectly into that rich, brooding, gothic niche of DA. I guess it isn't just a filter for my Instagram photos. I wanted to finally try this genre, and not just try it, but willingly, readily know what I'm going in for. I love a dark setting, it's somewhat my own preferable setting if I'm being honest (honestly creepy), and I haven't given romance outside a purely fantasy setting a proper chance. I found this book through another bookstagrammer, and after scanning the synopsis, I knew it definitely contained every element I'd love to read about: a shadowy and terrifying castle on a treacherous mountain, a witchy main character whose image is cosplay-able, an isolated cast of characters, potential supernatural elements, and atmospheric world-building.
The setting is a modern other-world, one that reflects our own but is entirely fictitious. It gives enough to the reader to see their way vividly through the book without overreaching its necessity to create the believable setting it needs to carry the story forward. There's a forbidden romance that builds as a somewhat enemies to lovers concept, but it's built with complexity and emotional weight. The mystery surrounding the university where the story takes place is one that weaves mental illness, family secrets and evil-crossed lovers into a seamless journey through a school year in 21-year-old Corvina Clemm's life. Mental illness and the paranormal are interwoven in our own world, and the author has combined and described situations and scenes that blend these two concepts really intriguingly. It gives the reader a perpetual obfuscation of precise events as the main story unfolds. Certain events could have been ghosts, or they could all have been imagined as part of a mental condition, it's up to interpretation but it doesn't detract from the plot in any way. If anything, it also leans into how Corvina feels as she navigates a mysterious university, her family's secrets and other darkly perceived aspects of herself, and a nemesis/love interest by the name of Vad Deverell. His name is so made for a romance novel it nearly slays me. If you've read it, you'll see what I did there. Corvina's name and those of the other characters fit into this other-world of earth with lanterns and iphones, gargoyles and class schedules with ease.
I liked this book, and I liked the story. I found myself admiring the way RuNyx brought supernatural concepts to a clearly dark and brooding school aesthetic but didn't overwrite them into every twist and turn. Events unfolded over the months that go by in the book with a consistent pace, the spice is descriptively exquisite, and the characters have been given depth enough to provide real understanding of their motives and behaviors.
It wasn't a book that look longer than a day to read, and I started with that "Look Inside" thing on Amazon. A chapter down and I just bought the ebook to lose an entire Wednesday to. I'm glad I did, and I'm glad this author is about to release another book in the same setting 150 years before Gothikana takes place. Autumn reading and Dark Academia are going on the TBR list with the horror!
-Leigh
PS: Nesta would totally read this and love it.

An unusual girl. An enigmatic man. An ancient castle. What could go wrong?
The Gothikana Hardcover Edition: featuring sprayed edges, a foil case stamp, gorgeously detailed endpapers, an updated map and deliciously moody art throughout.
WHAT IT’S ABOUT
The eternal romance of Beauty and the Beast meets the gothic suspense of Dracula in this erotic dark academia story of epic love from bestselling author RuNyx.
An unusual girl. An enigmatic man. An ancient castle. What could go wrong?
An outcast her entire life, Corvina Clemm is left adrift after losing her mother. When she receives the admission letter from the mysterious University of Verenmore, she accepts it as a sign from the universe. The last thing she expects though is an old, secluded castle on top of a mountain riddled with secrets, deceit, and death.
An enigma his entire life, Vad Deverell likes being a closed book but knowing exactly everything that happens in the university. A part-time professor working on his thesis, Vad has been around long enough to know the dangers the castle possesses. And he knows the moment his path crosses with Corvina, she's dangerous to everything that he is.
They shouldn't have caught each other's eye. They cannot be. But a chill-inducing century-old mystery forces them to collide. People have disappeared every five years over the past century, Corvina is getting clues to unraveling it all, and Vad needs to keep an eye on her.
And so, begins a tale of the mysterious, the morbid, the macabre, and a deep love that blossoms in the unlikeliest of places.

I name my characters stupid shit all the time but if your “dark fantasy romance” is published by Tor I get to make fun of you for names like “Corvina Clemm” and “Vad Deverell”. Like that’s hilarious sorry

“You’re the mountain I build my castle on, brick by brick,” she whispered to him, her eyes stinging. “You stand, I soar. You crack, I crumble.”
He crushed his lips to hers, kissing her with the fierceness she would never be able to tame, that she never wanted to tame, and she kissed him back, in the middle of ruins that had witnessed unspeakable horrors, the girl with the soul of the moon — blemished, darkened, ephemeral — finally finding a man with the soul of the night to shine with.

🎧 Matthew Mayfield - The Wolf In Your Darkest Room
.
Gothikana'yı bir süre önce okuduğum halde, paylaşma kısmını biraz geciktirdim. Kitabı sevip sevmediğimden emin olmayı bekledim belki de bilemiyorum.
.
.
Kitap, Yetişkin Okurlar İçindir.

2021 recap
Some of my favourite illustrations of 2021: 1 - for @gariverauthor's new project 2,3 - Corvina & Vad from RuNyx's "Gothikana" 3,4 - "Kintsugi" and "Devil" Inktober pieces
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(There are some other pieces I'm pretty happy with but can't reveal yet 😉) Since I'll be posting next in the new year, I'll make a recap of this one. 2021 was an interesting year overall. I met and got to know wonderful people, worked on fun and exciting projects 🙂 Finally got to work on book covers (1, 2) and illustrated a music single cover 🤩 Completed Inktober again 😂 Not everything went easy and smooth, though - some things turned out not the way I expected and were pretty stressful 🥴 Nevertheless, it was valuable experience that, hopefully, made me a little smarter 🤓 I hope we all will have more good in the upcoming year 🤞 And THANKS for sticking with me for this/another year! 😊
