Oi, e ai?

Kurzes Update zu einer kurzen Nacht: Bin heute morgen, ja richtig gelesen!, ins Bett. Für Frühschichtverhältnisse ein halsbrecherisches Himmelfahrtskommando. Aber keine Panik, das gehört alles zu meinem ausgeklügelten Plan mich auf nächste Woche, wenn es wieder heißt, sich die Nächte um die Ohren zu schlagen, vorzubereiten. Wie es sich für einen Freitag den 13ten gehört, hatte ich eine ungemütliche, unruhige Nacht. Alles kein Problem, denn für die nächsten Wochen war es das mit früh aufstehen. Uns erwartet das Ausschlaf-Paradies!

Alles andere als paradiesisch ist der topsecret Report der kürzlich von einem alten Bekannten an mich herangetragen wurde. Das muss ich einfach mit euch teilen. Behandelt diese Infos zu meinem und vor allem euren Wohl vertraulich. Keine Ahnung ob das eine neue wiederkehrende Kategorie wird. Kommt darauf an ob mir noch mehr solcher Wahrheiten anvertraut werden. Falls ja nenne ich sie "Selbsternannter Doppelagent des Mossad und FSB sagt"(mhhhh, vielleicht nicht der griffigste Name🤔).

Hier erstmal die Faktenlage:

Putin befreit zum Wohle der Menschheit die Ukraine. Nicht wegen der Entnazifizierung, das spielt nur eine untergeordnete Rolle, sondern weil hier die Labore stehen in denen das Corona Virus gezüchtet wird. Leider konnte ich bei der Flut an Informationen die auf mich einprasselte, nicht genau herauskristallisieren wer den Virus warum herstellt.

Ufff, danke das dieser "Obelix des LSD's" internationale Topspion mir die Augen geöffnet hat.

Ich werde unter dem Einsatz meines Lebens versuchen auch die Antworten auf diese Fragen zu bekommen.

A Comprehensive Guide to the Thugs in Tangled: The Series

When I watch shows on my computer, I usually have the subtitles on. Because of this, I have learned the names of some of the series thugs who are never addressed, or even never have speaking lines, because the subtitles will inform me who just laughed or grunted or screamed. I've also learned some of them through supplemental reading material.

So, without further ado, here are the names of Corona's criminal Underworld (and surrounding areas). I am including the names of those that we all know perfectly well. After all, it's a comprehensive guide. (Some of them are still unnamed, but I'm going through the episodes when I feel up to it, and will update this post as I discover new things.*)

Lady Caine and Her Crew

Lady Caine

The leader of her own band of thugs, with a personal vendetta against King Frederic and Rapunzel, she disguises herself as the Duchess of Quintonia in Tangled: Before Ever After as part of the plot to get inside the palace during Rapunzel's coronation. Implied past linked to Eugene.

Pocket

Lady Caine's right-hand man. He's also on the prison barge in "Peril On the High Seas."

Axel

Lady Caine's favorite horse and Maximus' #1 nemesis and rival. He's also on the prison barge in "Peril On the High Seas."

Otter

A hired thug who works for Lady Caine during Tangled: Before Ever After. He's also on the prison barge in "Peril On the High Seas."

Bandana

A hired thug who works for Lady Caine during Tangled: Before Ever After. He's also on the prison barge in "Peril On the High Seas."

Dwayne

A thug who idolizes Lady Caine, but also works on his own when not directly hired by her. Helped her escape prison in "Max's Enemy," and had a third of the focus in "Day of the Animals." He's not a very good thief.

Skull Ruffian

A hired thug who works for Lady Caine during Tangled: Before Ever After. (Because his design was based on an old character from a previous version of the movie, I personally call him Crowley.) He's also on the prison barge in "Peril On the High Seas."

"Unnamed" Caine Thug 1

A hired thug who works for Lady Caine during Tangled: Before Ever After. Can be spotted in the background in Vardaros. He's also on the prison barge in "Peril On the High Seas."

"Unnamed" Caine Thug 2

A hired thug who works for Lady Caine during Tangled: Before Ever After. He's also on the prison barge in "Peril On the High Seas."

The Baron and His Men (and Daughter)

The Baron

A criminal kingpin who operates out of Vardaros. He hired and exploited Eugene and Lance when they were children, and did the same to Kiera and Catalina. Has a personal vendetta against Eugene for "stealing his prized Stalyan." Is bitten by a highly venomous spider at the end of "Beyond the Corona Walls" and isn't seen again until "Flynnpostor," but now is disfigured from the bite.

Stalyan

The Baron's daughter and Eugene's ex-fiancée. She attempts to force Eugene to marry her in "Beyond the Corona Walls". Teams up with Rapunzel in "The Eye of Pincosta" to get a priceless gem that will ensure the freedom of Eugene and everyone else Rapunzel is traveling with during season two.

Anthony the Weasel

The Baron's right-hand man, and our first introduction to this branch of Eugene's past in "The Return of Strongbow." He's sent to collect Kiera and Catalina on behalf of The Baron in "Big Brothers of Corona," and attempts to take over Vardaros in The Baron's absence in "The Return of Quaid." He's also on the prison barge in "Peril On the High Seas."

Cutter

Sent to collect Kiera and Catalina in "Big Brothers of Corona," he's also one of the thugs to jump Eugene, Lance, and Shorty in Vardaros.

Arkus and Farkus

Twins who work for The Baron, they were sent to collect Kiera and Catalina in "Big Brothers of Corona," and are also at the forced wedding of Eugene and Stalyan. (I am admittedly not sure which is which, since they're always seen together.)

"Unnamed" Baron Thug

One of the thugs to jump Eugene, Lance, and Shorty in Vardaros. (I personally call him Dante, because I think he looks like a Dante.)

Separatists of Saporia

Andrew/Hubert

The leader of the Separatists of Saporia, his goal is to take over Corona in the name of his ancestors, after a marriage between Saporian General Shampanier and Coronan King Herz der Sonne joined the two kingdoms under the name Corona. Introduced in "Under Raps" as Cassandra's love interest, he quickly shows his true colors when he attempts to kill her in order to get the Book of Hearts, which includes maps to all of Herz der Sonne's underground tunnels. Is later to be shown having succeeded in taking over Corona in Rapunzel's absence along with the rest of the Separatists and Varian.

Clementine

A Separatist magic-user who cast a memory spell on King Frederic and Queen Arianna to aid in taking over Corona.

Juniper

A Separatist who helped take over Corona.

Kai

A Separatist who helped take over Corona.

"Unnamed" Separatist of Saporia

A Separatist who helped take over Corona.

Independent Criminals

The Stabbington Brothers

Patchy and Sideburns (nicknamed "Burnsie"), these two have a long-standing history with Eugene and Lance. It's possible that they, too, were taken under The Baron's wing, but that's never canonically confirmed. They hold a grudge against Eugene for double-crossing them with the Lost Princess' stolen crown. They appear in the movie Tangled, "Cassandra v. Eugene," "Peril On the High Seas," and for the final time in "The Return of the King," though a teenage version of them appear in "No Time Like the Past," when their bodies are inhabited by a time-traveling Rapunzel and Pascal.

The Daylight Thieves

Petunia and William are only seen in "Vigor the Visionary," where they are preying upon the town Fortuna. They pose as Kiera's parents, after a case of mistaken identity, since they took over their house, where she found them. Though Eugene and Rapunzel realize who they really are, they arrive on the scene too late to save Kiera and Catalina, since the girls have rescued themselves from the situation.

Dale

Introduced in "Fitzherbert P.I.," Dale disguised himself as The Giovanni, a renowned Italian portrait painter who comes to Corona to paint Rapunzel's first official portrait. He's caught by Eugene before he can escape with the priceless painting of Corona's former king, Robin the Eleventh. He's also on the prison barge in "Peril On the High Seas," where we learn his real name.

The Collector

Hired by Anthony the Weasel in Vardaros during his attempt to take over in "The Return of Quaid". Never says a word, and we never see his face.

"Unnamed" Thug

First seen as a background character in Vardaros, "Peril On the High Seas" is the only other time I remember seeing him.

Gothel and Lilia Parallels/Tangled & Cassandra

I was talking to Mumble ( @/081314) and Amy ( @/the-knaves-world) and how Lilia has a lot of elements from Gothel (From Tangled)

Gothel

Lilia’s new title from the 3rd Anniversary update has been Seeker of Cradles. We know that Gothel kidnapped Rapunzel because she has the healing properties/ablility to reverse age from the flower.

Rapunzel is also the kidnapped princess and with the theories that Silver could be a descendant from the Knight of Dawn, that could make him royalty.

Then we come to the age aspect. Gothel kidnapped Rapunzel so she can use her to become young again. Who else do we know that is old and lacking magic? Lilia Vanrouge, who can’t use his magic and is dying.

On top of that, Lilia has been hiding many secrets especially from Silver. As can also be seen with Gothel and how she hid Rapunzel’s background from her.

If Silver has symbolisms from Rapunzel, then he might also have her abilities as well. The power to heal. In the movie, Rapunzel brought back Eugene with her tears...and who else do we know has been crying? Silver. Maybe it is his tears that heals Lilia? Maybe returns his magic? It would make sense and is in parallel with the live action Maleficent 2 Movie. Since it was Aurora’s tears that brought back Maleficent. If that is the case, that means that Lilia can then help bring down Malleus’ OB.

Most of the Flowers that Lilia has been associated with recently has had healing properties to them, so hoping (please) that means that one way or another Lilia will be healed (or have more time with his sons).

We know that Silver and Lilia lived far away from other villagers, but we don’t know why. Mumble and I assumed it could be because Silver has so many qualities of the Knight of Dawn. Time will only tell why that is so. Gothel kept Rapunzel away so she can keep the child to herself and use her powers.

Lilia, despite becoming weak in the sun, has been in many sun related events. The sun symbol is the main design in the kingdom of Corona. Not only that, but Gothel literally became dust out the window when she fell out of the tower. It was bright and sunny outside, despite the cold and dark inside the tower. Not saying that will happen to Lilia, but he is weak and dying is he not?

Bringing back the point that Eugene got stabbed and then healed by Rapunzel, who got hurt recently in Chapter 4? Protecting Silver no less? Do you see where I am going with this? It points that someway somehow Lilia might get healed and Silver might be the reason. (Love heals all, does it not?)

Back when I was really into Tangled, I read this post that talked about how Rapunzel was raised not to show emotions. We have seen how Fae have trouble expressing themselves, verbally and emotionally. We have seen how Lilia’s role in Malleus’ and Silver’s life has affected them so. Malleus having to act and always keep the image of a king. Then we have Silver, who expressed how he has trouble showing how he feels and how that troubles him (Silver Dorm SSR). That is until we get to book 7 and he breaks down in front of Malleus which ends up cascading to the whole OB event. All of this to say, Gothel raised Rapunzel not to show physical affection and when it was needed, Rapunzel would seek comfort from her and no one else. Just like how Silver can only seek comfort from those he is close with. (though, to be fair, those he is close with know him better than anyone else and we have seen how NRC reacts to how chivalrous Silver is)

Sun Drop/Moon Drop Symbolisms & Cassandra

Elements from the animated series can be seen as well.

We know that Silver and Malleus have traits that are the same and yet opposites as well,

Silver gives off light vibes. He always had his animal friends even when Lilia was away. Malleus gives off dark vibes. He has always been alone despite being surrounded by people. Silver has lived in a cottage out in the forrest with plenty of sun while Malleus (if we go by animated movie vibes and aesthetics and what we have learned from him) probably lived in a dark atmosphere at the castle, only escaping to visit the others.

There's also the fact that Lilia, Malleus, and Sebek are a type of Dark Fae. Silver is not Fae and could be a descendent of Knight of Dawn. You know dawn, which is the light before the sun rises.

The Sun drop has healing properties. Silver has symbolisms in pastels (which is of course in correlation with Sleeping beauty as well).

The Moon drop is destructive, causes death, decay, ruin, and destruction. It can also drain the life force and vital essence from living things, such as plants and people. Which we know is what's happening with Malleus’ magic as it expands and destroys the nature around him. How people can die if they don't get rescued from this dream world soon.

The moon drop can summon black rock spines...which in instances can look like thorns. The Moon drop can also keep track of the sun drop, as it always knows its location.

Gothel played a role in the animated series as well. She neglected her daughter, Cassandra, and then abandoned her once she kidnapped Ranunzel. To condense what happened in the series, theres misunderstandings which eventually leads to Rapunzel and Cassandra butting heads. In short, Malleus and Silver are currently butting heads.

Cassandra and Silver has parallels too. Lilia often went traveling leaving Silver behind. (We don’t know to what degree the Zigvolts took care of him nor how often Malleus visited). Silver had to fend for himself and do chores in the cottage. Cassandra would often get left behind while Gothel would got about doing her own business, leaving Cass to fend for herself.

Cassandra repressed her memories of Gothel and grew to be a mature, intelligent, and skilled fighter. She had the dream to become a Royal Guard just like her adopted father. Who else do we know that shares those same ambitions? Silver who’s adopted father is the General of the Royal Family.

Cassandra is loyal to the King and Queen but was willing to break rules and lose her job to make Rapunzel happy. Silver is willing to to go against Malleus so Lilia can do what he wished despite his actions hurting all three of them. Silver is also willing to go against his King to stop him knowing that it is wrong and Malleus is not in his right mind and knowing that Malleus is suffering while OB.

Reuniting the two stones are said to bring ultimate power, but what if in this case, Humans and Faes getting along brings peace? (Its not like we can yeet Silver and Malleus to space lol)

Alternatively, we have seen how Malleus has used his powers to fix the stage in Book 5. We have seen how Malleus healed Vil. Maybe, once Silver helps brings Malleus back, both Malleus and Silver can heal Lilia. The ultimate power is the love they share for Lilia, the sun and moon, which ultimately heals. Like how Cass died, but Rapunzel used the two stones to bring her back. (Malleus magic does deal with nature and we have seen how connected to nature and magic the Fae are and Silver has always also had a connection to animals/nature).

Fun Fact: Hikaru Midorikawa was one of the singers in “I see the Light”... I bet Lilia is seeing the light alright--okay, okay, I’ll stop 😂( I know a few people who are going to give me looks for that lolol)

(Disney really out here saying we should focus on the movies and the animated shows 😂, I did not expect to delve into Cassandra as much as I did but it all makes so much sense).

year in review

wanted to reflect on the things i've made this year. here goes nothing!

Games

ghost story is a point-and-click mystery made in unity as my final project for code coven's IGM course!! I genuinely think we managed a pretty solid concept and execution in two weeks, and if you like murder mysteries, this is for you!

lungs to burn is a short poem game made for the may 2023 bitsy jam, talking about wildfires, grief, and queer connection. featured in both indiepocalypse #43 and hand eye society's SUPERFestival. in general, the response i got for this one was kinda overwhelming (and a little confusing), but i'm glad it resonated with people! still very proud of it.

no postage required is another bitsy game, this time made for the trans game dev server jam. a somewhat-sequel to the end is near; or a letter to a lost love. there are definitely things i'd redo with this one but all in all, not too bad!

Zines

Kriah: a personal zine about some of my experiences with antisemitism over the years. definitely a heavy read but honestly i stand by it just as much as when i wrote it? idk as someone who has a lot of trauma from years of antisemitic harassment, this has been a WEIRD fucking year, and it's weird to revisit something i wrote at the beginning of the year that feels even more relevant now.

how to the hold the pain is a collage/web weaving zine i did for this year's blaseball zine jam, using blaseball narratives as a way to view crip theory and vice versa. i spent a LOT of time reading through articles for this (both academic and other) and every second of it was worth it. genuinely one of my favourite things i made all year.

Fic

i wrote a lot less fic this year than the previous two for a multitude of reasons but i still put out a few bangers!! here's a brief selection of my favourites:

swallow your guilt (blaseball, 13.2k), a story about the new seattle garages, the old chicago firefighters, grief, and finally growing up, all through the biased eyes of one baby "ruthless" triumphant

spectroscopy, or a snapshot of a light and that which it absorbs (blaseball, 2.6k), the coda to my bright zimmerman series. i technically wrote this in the fall of 2022 but posted it in march so it still counts.

somewhere there's a fire burning (rogue one, 1k), a character study of bohdi rook between the destructions of nijedha and scarif. my first non-blb fic! and still a banger imo

i play dead, come alive (hatchetfield, 12x100), character study of stephanie lauter during the events of npmd. now officially my most popular fic and honestly i'm good with that!!! i think it's a solid little fic.

just all of corona borealis. i did some good stuff about grief and growth this year y'all.

the back half of this year was mostly filled with portfolio updating, job hunting, and just generally struggling with everything lol but!!! i still made some cool stuff and am hoping to get more back to making stuff next year! it's where i feel most at home. have fun checking these out if you do!

"Gideon the Ninth"

So... It seems I'm at the last reading update... I actually didn't plan to cram so much into one post, but I got really into reading for a day or two, and then managed to get to the last 50ish pages and said fuck it. I'm not gonna say much except that I didn't expect for it to be that bloody, then at the end got so used to it that I had no other choice to just close the book and think to myself "Well. This happened." I will be writing a concise review as I do with each book I read, but I'm just gonna say I loved it very much. (This is, of course, a big understatement, but yeah... I'll gush about it in my review.) SPOILER WARNING! (Like always.)

Without further ado, my thoughts:

I might have been unbothered by the first two deaths, but I sure as hell am not ok after the end of Act 3. Was all that really necessary?? 😭😭

Yooo that scene when Gideon forces Harrow to siphon from her again is??? Hhhhhh... Made me feel a few things. Here's a graphic rendition:

I'm glad Harrow is banning Gideon from seeing Dulcinea. And the thing she mentions about the keys - she's right, it really doesn't make sense. It stuck out to me before, but I just forgot to comment on it. In any case, it's extremely suspicious. Protesilaus is also probably missing because of a distinct reason, related to his adept. Wouldn't be surprised if the Seventh is the one going around killing people.

Of course Silas turned out to be a little weasel. But at least Colum has some dignity.

Oh yeah, Corona is definitely not a necromancer.

Ok, but why am I not surprised that Harrow is the one who had her fingers in Protesilaus's disappearance? Honestly, she's the second most suspicious person in the mansion, but I love her, so I don't care.

HELLOOOOOOOO???? HELLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO????

First plot twist I have not expected. At all. I'm shooketh, as one might say.

Aww man. False alarm. >:( (This was about Gideon't claim that she murdered Harrow's parents.)

Oooh, but the big revelation was good! It was just a matter of time, so my reaction was more like "Ah! Finally!", than :O (Future me talking here: I'm not entirely sure what this is referring to? I'd guess it was about the Locked Tomb.)

Stuff just kept happening and people just kept dying. Didn't even get the chance to write it all out, and another one was on the floor. Anyway... WHAT THE FUCK.

Honestly, I thought stuff would get all tangled up and I would lose my footing, as I heard most people do. (Or will, in the next book.) So I'm just glad I could follow along quite nicely. It all made sense in the end, even the stuff about Dulcinea. I wasn't too surprised she's the culprit, I'm just surprised how she's the culprit.

PALAMEDES!!!! NOOOOOO!!!!!!

"I can't conceive of a universe without you in it." Again, Muir going straight for the jugular. I know she likes to kill off her characters, but she doesn't need to kill of her readers as well.

Ok, you know what. I knew there would be no happy ending. We all knew Harrow couldn't become Lyctor without Gideon dying. So, I am not surprised it happened. But I am also NOT OKAY.

Man, I love Harrow. I love her in the epilogue. I love her in the last chapter. I love how much she cares, how much she always cared. And I love how her relationship with Gideon evolved over time. Ugh. Uuughhh!

Ok, yeah... This was an experience. I'll be ordering Harrow soon and.... Yeah. I'm (not) prepared for more heartbreak.

I was wondering, how many peafowl babies did you end up with this year? Other than the marvelous Miss Bug, of course.

The updates on all of your pets are always such a joy and I thank you for them!

Five have hatched total! Bug's clutch mates were a purple hen and a blue boy, and I sold them as a pair to a friend since I knew I didn't want a blue boy and I didn't want that hen (her conformation was not as good as Bug's). Aurora and eclipse hatched 2 babies, a blue boy and a purple hen, whom they are raising in the pen.

Arcana and Aris are still on a nest and while the time is long past for Aris' eggs to hatch, there's a chance Arcana's eggs she laid in Aris' nest will hatch. Corona is sitting on a few eggs from Polaris, but I don't think they are her eggs, as she laid them well after Polaris got put in horny jail for being a dick. He got over it and I released him back into genpop, and Opal and Onyx have been laying eggs in Corona's nest. I JUST candled all the eggs she would let me, and find 2 fertile ones, so hopefully Corona will have some babies to raise. They won't be Indie's babies, but I'll be able to sell them to cover some upkeep costs.

So, five out, hopefully 2+ on the way.

Tangled Fic Recommendation

Every so often I like to talk about a fanfiction I am reading and recommend it to people.

Today, I'm not only recommending one story, I am recommending an entire series.

23 stories in their series so far and counting. And there is still a lot more to come.

Not only has this author embarked on a thrilling rewrite of the series, they have written it so well that I am always eagerly awaiting the next part.

The best part is that updates are DAILY! What author manages to keep updating daily consistently for over a year?

I am of course talking about the series on A03 starting with the fic: "Two Tangled Sisters" which begins with the premise that Cassandra was taken to the Tower before Gothel kidnapped Rapunzel and then subsequently cared for Rapunzel and became an older sister. The first fic shows them growing up in the Tower and then covers the Tangled movie, introducing Eugene and showing their adventure as Rapunzel and Eugene fall in love, alongside Cassandra who just wants to protect her little sister.

The series has expanded from there, following through with how Rapunzel and Cassandra adapt to Royal Life (because Arianna being the most awesome mum ever decides to adopt Cassandra too and she becomes a Princess of Corona). It is fascinating following their journey together, and the different paths Rapunzel and Cassandra take in this AU.

It continues into The Coronation, with Rapunzel getting her hair back, and then onto a rewrite of Season One, Two and now Three. I cannot talk much about it but each story written so far has something for everyone!

There is so much this series has given! To this day, the season finale for season 1 still hurts me.

I love the character progression all the characters go through: they all shine in this series!

As a Eugene fan, I cannot express my excitement enough as to his future role in this series! I am so excited for it!

And, despite the series being called Two Tangled Sisters, Eugene has a big role in the series and his and Rapunzel's relationship does take centre stage.

There are twists and turns and rewrites of episodes! An unexpected pairing for Cassandra that I did not expect to want but now its there I am rooting for them! Such great development of all the characters and it shows what a great author we have for this series, for them to be able to tell such great stories and make a pairing work.

This series is so much more than just a Cassandra series. It is so much more than that. It is one of the best rewrites I have ever encountered in my few years in the fandom. The author has done the impossible and, as a fan who wasn't fond of Cassandra to start with, this series has certainly helped me see Cassandra, even in canon, with a new light. I cannot wait to see how this series goes!

I urge anyone not to brush this series off, to give it a try. You do not have to read every story in the series. The core set of stories following the series are enough, and there are multiple side-stories that add a bit extra to the characters.

I urge people to give this series a chance, whether you are a Cassandra fan or not - this series has something for everyone. And this is a series I wouldn't have read myself if I hadn't given a chance - and the only reason I did was because of the daily updates. I am so glad I gave this series a chance. It is 100% worth it!

Now, for some of you here, it will be very obvious which author I am talking about with this fic recommendation.

Unfortunately, this author has been, in some aspects, ostracised by the fandom in a lot of places. It's got to a point they still do not feel comfortable on tumblr, and this, to me, is very sad, because @twotangledsisters is such a GREAT PERSON to interact with.

She has become one of my favourite people on this site. Her writing, her opinions, her art are absolutely fabulous, and yet, people block her, excluding her from being able to interact with their content all because of her love of Cassandra from Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure.

@twotangledsisters is not just a Cassandra fan. She is a New Dream fan too but has been excluded from a lot of New Dream spaces because of her love of Cassandra and that is absolutely heart-breaking, that someone who loves this show so much, cannot fully interact with the fandom simply because they love Cassandra. If someone reblogs a piece of New Dream art that she likes, she finds out she's blocked from the original poster's blog so cannot follow them or see their other New Dream content.

It is sad and horrible to find out the way she did that people have done this to her. And how some people sent her horrible messages, telling her she was not welcome in New Dream spaces, when she absolutely 100% is WELCOME.

@twotangledsisters has so much love and care and creativity she wants to share with everyone but now feels she cannot. I am thrilled that she continues to produce brilliant artwork for my own fics! I'm honestly astounded by what she has produced so far for my fic: The Lost Prince!

Please everyone: be kind.

@twotangledsisters is a gift to the fandom and I feel incredibly proud to be calling myself her friend. She is awesome, and so is her fanfic series: Two Tangled Sisters.

Give it a try! I heartily recommend it.

Chapter 1 of Nona the Ninth

Apologies for the AI interlude, back to your regularly scheduled Locked Tomb liveblog

So Nona is a child or childlike person in Harrow's body, and I guess she is maybe having dreams about Harrow's memories, in the case of this chapter, the memory of the pool scene. At least, I think this was a dream, this happens right after she wakes up and after recounting it she says "it's gone already", like she's having trouble remembering a dream

I wonder if Harrow is actually short/skinny enough to pass as a ten-year-old well or if people just think Nona is weird? I guess we will find out exactly how irrational all of that "she's only nine years old!" stuff was from Mercy in that last book

I notice they seem to be using actual paper here. In As Yet Unsent, Judith said that Camilla and Corona both hated the texture of paper, but it seems like Camilla at least has gotten over that. Presumably Pyrrha has actual experience of using paper from 10,000 years ago

It's not clear what kind of recording device Camilla is using, but from what we do get it sounds like an old tape recorder from the 90s. With any kind of modern technology, she would surely be recording Nona with a phone or some similar device that doesn't have physical buttons and is multipurpose rather than just being a recorder, wouldn't she? The Nine Houses seems to be technologically stuck somewhere in the middle ages and probably this is John's fault somehow, but I don't think BOE has that excuse, they seem to have relatively modern technology available and it's been 10,000 years. So why are they using a tape recorder?

Is it important that she not have another tantrum just because she doesn't like them or doesn't like how they make people treat her, or does she do some unconscious necromancy thing during them that puts them all in danger?

So Harrow obviously wasn't like Gideon-level buff or anything, but we never heard anything about her having trouble or getting sore just from walking around. Or is this related to the thing that Judith mentioned, where necromancers get used to supporting their body with necromancy and then when they go to space and don't have any available thanergy they're a bit disabled? Was Harrow supporting her muscles with necromancy all her life and now that her body is occupied by someone who seemingly can't, or doesn't do necromancy, she has trouble with basic things like walking? It didn't sound from Gideon's POV in the last book that Harrow was that weak

You know, Gideon called it a "watch" way back in the very first chapter of Gideon the Ninth:

Is this a Sixth House thing? Or is it trying to do something where Nona only knows whatever language BOE speaks, and somehow the House word that Camilla uses sounds like or means "clockwork" in the BOE language? That doesn't make a lot of sense, those languages should realistically be very different regardless of whether either of them is actually Modern English

So she has been shown multiple alphabets, it sounds like, but she can't recognize letters, at least in handwriting. I wonder if it's an issue with handwriting in particular, or if there's something funky about the way she perceives shapes and lines. She certainly doesn't seem to have any issues with language

I like how they're keeping a tally of Pyrrha's ass jokes, haha. It sounds like they might be tallying other things too

This sounds like some more weird Christian-inspired religious flimflam. I wonder what kind of religious flimflam BOE has, and if it's actually significantly different than the Houses' religious flimflam aside from obviously not being about necromancy

So I guess Camilla and Palamedes got updated by Pyrrha about how she and G1deon achieved Lyctorhood and said that sounds rad, sign us up? Or did something different happen here?

I mean, Palamedes already broke into the fanfiction scene, he's most of the way there to the poor-quality erotica, really

I seem to recall from Dr. Sex that there was some required erotic poetry writing on the Sixth. I wonder what Camilla thought of that

So they're not entirely sure what the actual extent of her cognitive abilities are. I wonder what their theories are about who or what she is, or how this soul came be in possession of this body? I guess possibly her body could have gotten possessed by a ghost from the River at the very end of Gideon's POV in the last book, John did say at the beginning of the book that if Harrow's soul went missing while they were physically in the River something else would come and take its place. But Nona being a random ghost is not very interesting, and thus probably not actually the case. I seem to recall that the last thing Gideon saw before we lost her POV was Alecto, who does indeed seem to have been haunting Harrow at least at some point, but the way that Mercy and Augustine described her as being before John enTombed her is nothing like how Nona is

Who is "her"? Nona? I've gotten the feeling so far that BOE don't know that Nona's body used to belong to a necromancer, they seem to be trying to keep this a secret

So, I guess BOE has captured a Nine Houses barracks that is maybe on a planet or space station or something and are besieging it while they negotiate with the Houses for something? Are they on the thanergy planetoid that Palamedes mentions later? I'm not sure from this conversation exactly what Palamedes thinks should be done with the barracks and exactly what Pyrrha is advocating for instead, and I can tell already that the Nona POV is going to be even less helpful at telling me what is going on as the POV in the previous two books was

Presumably "she" in that last bit is Wake

I'm not sure what the status of this planet they're on is. Is it a refugee planet? Is it involved in the siege?

Nine million people in a city is like, a little bigger than New York City, it's not that crazy. Is the 16 million the rest of the population of the planet? That's really not much for an entire planet, the combined total of 25 million is still 12 million less than the population of the Tokyo Metropolitan Area. And the whole Seventh + Eighth is not even much bigger than New York City, the Nine Houses really is tiny. I guess this is the effect of thanergenic planets on population growth, but like, it sounded from Gideon the Ninth that the Fourth House was relying on a have-as-many-children-as-possible-in-the-hopes-that-some-don't-die strategy, and they are using vat grown babies to accomplish this rather than relying on natural reproduction, so in theory they should have a large population, at least

Kind of interesting, when I was googling the population of Tokyo, google showed me this:

Based on the Wikipedia article, I think this number is the population of Tokyo proper rather than the whole Tokyo Metropolitan Area, but many other sites that document the "population of Tokyo" use the 37-40 million number, possibly because it's more crazy sounding. So the information extraction is technically accurate, but then you look at the first four results:

And you can see that a different information extraction algorithm has highlighted what it thinks is the correct answer in the snippets of these results, and three out of four of them give the bigger number, which is very different than the number that appears at the top of the search results. This overall does not provide a clear answer to the question without actually clicking through to the results, so IMO google's attempt to use information extraction to deliver a quick answer to a simple question has failed, here, even though the algorithm worked. It's also not surprising that the one source that gives the lower number is the actual Japanese government source, they probably have a reduced interest in wowing people about how big Tokyo is

Anyway

So possibly this planet is about to become a casualty of this war, although I still do not understand the politics of this situation, and I gather that We Suffer is a Waker, and now that Wake is gone some other political faction has taken over, possibly the one responsible for nuking John's fleet. Ctesiphon is an ancient Iranian city, and Merv is also an ancient placename in Iran, this seems to be a theme. I guess BOE probably have records of pre-Resurrection Earth and just name everyone and everything after all of that stuff, but based on Wake's name they seem to have lost some cultural context for a lot of it. But Ctesiphon and Merv are actually names that were used as names on Earth, whereas the names for the actual people are not

Lyctor healing abilities are pretty convenient for shaving, haha. Also, I gather this means they do not actually require necromancy to function (although I think it was established in the last book that Pyrrha maybe heals more slowly than G1deon would if he were in control) and I think it was implied at the end of Harrow the Ninth that Nona also has some residual instahealing abilities, although I'm guessing that whether or not Nona can do necromancy is not currently known with certainty by anyone

If Nona is not supposed to be rescuing any animals, I wonder where this specific category of animals to be saved came from? Also interesting that she says this when she probably knows it's not the answer Pyrrha wants. It's not like she can't lie, she said earlier that Pyrrha and Palamedes were speaking loudly, but they weren't

Man, I can tell this was written by someone who has never had to wear glasses regularly. I've switched back and forth between glasses and contacts at various point in my life, it's really not a big issue to adapt to not wearing glasses ever after having worn them every day for a long time, in my experience it's the not being able to see things part that is what primarily reminds you that you aren't wearing glasses and so when you can see things because you're wearing contacts you don't feel the need to put on glasses before going out. You also don't wear them 24/7, you take them off to sleep, it's totally normal to veg out around the house or leave to get the mail without your glasses, your glasses are not a phantom limb that you miss, what prompts you to push them up your nose is the feeling of them slipping down, you don't get the urge to do that if the glasses are not on your face at all. If I woke up in a new body with 20/20 vision I would never wear glasses again and I would not miss them, or probably ever think about them again

So maybe this planet is about to get eaten by a resurrection beast, and it's not to do with the war at all? Also, like, Gideon killed a bunch of Heralds in the last book, while in an unfamiliar and not very strong body, I feel like Camilla could do perfectly well against them in her own body, though it might be a problem if Palamedes surfaces during that event

I just want to finish by saying that it's pretty funny that there are four people living in this apartment, and not a single one of them is the singular occupant of their original body

Sure!

Apologies for taking so long, I was determined to find my last WIP post so as to not re-list everything but... didn't find it so we're going in with a new list! XD

But first, the fic with Captain raising Eugene and Lance is tilted 'A Chance to Raise Them', I'll throw it first onto the list and yes, it is still in the making, it's my go to for writing when I feel under the weather, last chapter I wrote Cass had a new sworn enemy, Eugene got waaay too many sprinkles on his hot chocolate and Arianna started a tickle fight that Cass lost! :D

Onto the list (in no particular order):

Chance to Raise Them

Two girls are recovered from a tower. Arianna and Frederic get their daughter back only three years after her kidnapping but she comes with a seven-year-old big sister.

A few years later Cassandra takes down a couple of thieves going by Flynn and Lance. At first Captain keeps them close in hope of teaching them a lesson, but when they thank him for the structure and security he supplies, he doesn't have it in him to send them back to the orphanage.

A Badly Aimed Arrow (Title Pending Change)

Eugene and Cassandra head into town to buy Rapunzel some paints, bickering as they do. Then suddenly Cassandra shoves Eugene to the ground, at first he thinks she's taking the bickering to a new level, until he sees the blood.

Mirror, Mirror, What You Took From Me

Cassandra was heading to the dining hall of the House of Yesterday's Tomorrow to get a snack when arms reached out of the mirror and tried to snatch her, she thinks fast and smashes the glass.

She knew this place was a terrible idea! Thankfully she handled the danger. That is... Until they realise Eugene was the first taken by the mirror and he now has no way out.

The Backup (Title possibly Pending Change)

Gothel always knew it was only a matter of time until she misstepped and lost. Because of that she had a child, a child of her blood and flesh whom she enchanted so that if ever Gothel did die, she had a way back into the world of the living.

An alternate S3 with Cass fighting for control over her own body and the gang fighting to get their friend back.

Market Day

The guards were searching for an old lady. They'd of never picked Gothel out of a crowd. But you know who would?

"Mama!" Cassandra pointed and reached out for the curly haired woman during a visit to the market.

Gothel fails at kidnapping Rapunzel and dies, Tromus swoops in to take Cassandra and raise her. Teacher her magic and raises her to one day seek out vengeance for her Mother.

Partners in Crime

Neither Eugene nor Rapunzel ever realise she's the lost princess, so after Gothel's death they flee Corona to be partners in crime together. Captain loses his job after Flynn Rider's prison escape, leading Cassandra to want vengeance on her dad's behalf.

She didn't expect to find her thief alongside the missing princess.

Islands Together

Owl never went to get Rapunzel and Rapunzel never talked any sense into Captain.

Captain came home with a little four-year-old Cassandra and people in Corona just kinda let it happen, not knowing what else to do. All seems fine until Cassandra finds out.

Royalty Can't Date a Thief

Frederic doesn’t allow Rapunzel and Eugene to date because royalty can’t date an ex-thief. So Eugene gets a job as her bodyguard and they date in secret.

Queen for an Eternity

What if Arianna and Frederic didn’t make it back after the blizzard?

Rapunzel is the new queen of Corona but far to occupied mourning to do her job.

Arianna became encased in the amber and Frederic tries to kill Varian.

Kinda self-explanatory.

The Hostage Situation

Instead of knock Cassandra out, Hector takers her hostage to force the gang to leave his home. Eugene tries to sneak back in while the rest of the gang leaves, he fails pretty miserably.

Thankfully Hector and Cassandra are able to bond over duty and foolish royals who don't listen to your warnings.

Mother Knows Best

Magic is heavily prosecuted in Corona.

Gothel really did rescue Rapunzel.

Eugene only realises the danger his put Rapunzel in by taking her from the tower after he falls in love.

Amber Alchemist

Quirin isn't there to save Varian from his experiments. But he is around to seek out justice for his son. (Quirin Villain arc!)

Mother Zhan Tiri

Zhan Tiri reached Cassandra through dreams slowly convincing her that Gothel is an unfit mother and will eventually hurt Rapunzel. Convincing Cassandra to escape with her sister and head to the dark kingdom where she will find the moonstone.

Gothel the Guardian of the Sundrop

Before the Sundrop can be turned to tea a woman shows up claiming she can heal the queen and princess if just allowed a moment alone.

She succeeds.

Frederic is forever grateful and gives the woman a position as Corona's healer, a home in the palace garden where she can heal and raise her daughter Cassandra.

Arianna does not much like Gothel, but her husbands is too grateful to see some of that behaviours. Besides, Gothel is the only healer Corona has.

That is until the thief Flynn Rider while hiding from the guards discovers an incantation in some underground tunnels and decides he wants in on the scam.

I think that's most of it! Also there's a few prequels for the Tangled Sisters AU. Obviously anything already publishing.

And I did leave a few projects that are either very unlikely to be finished or I just don't know how to describe!

Oh, and Our Undying Dream with @the-writer1988 that is also a WIP...

Yeah, I've definitely forgotten some stuff xD

The Smolder

PAIRING: Eugene x Female Reader (Romantic) (Fluff)

SUMMARY: (Y/N) has her hands full with her thieving boyfriend, Eugene. She has to make his wanted posters and decides she needs a model.

Being an official member for the knights of Corona is more than just a tiring job. Especially when (Y/N) constantly has to use her influence just to keep her boyfriend out of trouble.

Eugene Fitzherbert, professionally known as Flynn Rider, has proven to be more than just a thorn in her side; even on his best days, it’s still a load of paperwork to get through just to clear his name. That never stops Eugene from repaying the favor tenfold of course.

(Y/N) left her house, greeting the townsfolk as she made her way to work. Countless wanted posters needed to be updated and others required a whole new look. Her boyfriend was one of them.

It was quite pitiful how often the wanted posters got his nose wrong, but (Y/N) couldn’t help herself from keeping a copy of each one she made; yep, she made every single one. A secret that she had kept from Eugene. (Y/N) didn’t hide it out of shame or anything, she was just waiting for the right time to reveal it and see the look of shock on Eugene’s face.

And today was finally her chance. The stars had aligned, she woke up in a good mood, and even encountered a ladybug on her way into her private office. Today was going to be the day she’d finally unveil her long ongoing prank to Eugene.

She took her work supplies home and waited for Eugene to return from one of his many adventures. He always made it back home at the exact same time with a gift of flowers, chocolate, and afternoon kiss.

“Have a good day at work, sunshine?” He asked while hugging (Y/N) in a deathly grip. He planted light kisses all over her face as she snuggled up closer to him. They sat down next to each other, Eugene playing with her hair.

“You’re wanted again. Even more than before now. I have to make a new poster for you.” (Y/N) smiled mischievously as Eugene hummed in response. “Wanna model for me?” It was like night and day with how quick he switched; one moment Eugene is holding you in his arms and the next he’s already striking a pose.

You immediately ran off to get your supplies, sat on a stool, and got to work. “Don’t forget the smolder!” He teased.

“Ooooh don’t worry! I definitely won’t forget…,” she kept giggling under her breath. Eugene scrunched his eyebrows, becoming more confused and intrigued as she kept on giggling.

“What are you, uhhh, doing there? Hun? Love of my life? Light of my world? The one who’s totally not going to make me look like a dork on a poster that’ll be immortalized on thousands of papers for years to come?”

“Stop worrying! You look divine,” (Y/N) avoided the question.

After some time had passed she finally finished the picture. Eugene rushed over with a wide smile on his face only for it to immediately drop. Instead it was replaced with a pouty face and a loud huff. “You didn’t get my nose right.” (Y/N) kissed him on the cheek and skedaddled to the kitchen.

At first he said it in passing thought, but it wasn’t until after dinner, after his shower, and when he was lying in bed that he had a revelation.

“Since the beginning…it’s been you!” Queue your loud laughter booming through the night.

“Ooooh. No, no, no, no. Now, it’s on.”

“What is?”

“A prank war.”
