At Gordon Castle, Scotland, these pillars of Fagus sylvatica Atropurpurea Group (copper beech, purple beech) add height and structure to the 100m long central borders. The designer Arne Maynard surrounded the topiary tree pillars with herbaceous plants in a soft colour palette with flowers and foliage of blue, purple and white with touches of yellow and apricot.

Wander the city of 100 spires as I collect acorns, cones of spruce & pine, linden tree nuts and copper beech leaves. Canal Transitions

Amidst an early September heatwave, Saharan dust coated cars and hot air made for squiffy guts. Instead of a planned outing further afield, we opted for a canalside amble and pub lunch. It’s in the trees, June 2022: The Copper Beech, St Laurence Churchyard, Ramsgate.

For June I stayed local and revisited one of my favourite trees in St Laurence’s Churchyard, Ramsgate. There, among the tomb stones stands a rather majestic Copper Beech tree. I can’t find any information as to how old this tree is but it is a beauty in all seasons - changing its shawl of foliage from bright greens to rusty reds and deep purples.

On my visit, I found a rather lovely jay feather too.

Crow Nest West to East

On a mid-May Saturday, we made our way up to Palace House Road to wend up pretty paths.
