ISLAM 101: Muslim Culture and Character: Reflections (Tafakkur): Part 1
MAN IN THE ‘SPIRAL’ OF THOUGHTS
Man is a being shaped in mind and spirit and in character in accordance with the view of things and the world that he has acquired after years of thinking and consideration.
Thought intention and ambition are of the same importance in the development of a man’s potentialities as the earth air rain and sun are in germination and growth of seeds under the soil. Intention and thought have a primary influence on the formation of a man’s morals and character. Sound minds and character develop from pure thoughts and intentions.
The thought is a seed from which the tree of personality grows. Manners are flowers of this tree and joys and sorrow its fruits. The one who looks upon the bright side of the world thinks of good things and the one who thinks of good things germinates in his soul the seeds of virtues and beauties and thereby lives in the gardens he has formed in his bosom. Contrary to this the pessimistic souls who are critical of everything and look upon their environment through the holes of their dark world can never discern what is good and beautiful in it nor can they truly enjoy their lives. Even if they were admitted in Paradise they would again sing the praises of Hell and pour out their grievances to the angels of Hell and therefore they always live in the pit of regrets and complaints.
Man being the Creator’s vicegerent on earth has been created so that he should rule over the whole creation. In order to be able to carry out this significant mission, he has been endowed with great potentialities. Through systematic thinking and deepening in the spiritual life, he will develop those potentialities and acquire a sublime character and personality. Pessimism and evil thoughts will, by contrast, cause him to develop an evil character or if as a third alternative he does not build his personality by developing his potentialities in accordance with the Commandments of his Creator he will rot away with nothing positive to give his community.
The gardens which a man builds in his soul through pure thoughts and intentions will in the course of time flourish so as to surround the whole world and spread the perfumes of happiness to everybody. Evil thoughts and intentions, by contrast, offer everyone ‘blood pus and filth’. In fact, man carries in his being the potentialities of being either a ‘monster’ or an ‘angel’. In this realm of trial, he may rise to the ‘highest of the high’ as he may fall to the ‘lowest of the low’. So the one who uses his will-power by reliance on God in accordance with the demands of the Divine Will will attain to the highest of the ranks by God’s leave and help while those who make themselves devoid of this support will regret and wail over their pitiful ends.
Although it is always questionable what part man’s free will has in his accomplishments all his duties and responsibilities are nevertheless based on this ‘fine thread’. By seeing his strength and richness as innate impotence and poverty by relying therefore upon God’s Power and Riches and submitting his will to the Divine Will a man can discipline himself and direct his thoughts and feelings to lofty ideals to gain eternity for them and so build his character and personality. Without being discouraged in the face of any setbacks and without neglecting to consider again and again the prevailing circumstances he uses his free-will as a key to discovering the traps laid for him by his material carnal self and eliminates them from his way to eternity. He also analyses his inner world continuously without being tired and finally succeeds in realizing the mysteries of selfhood. This enables him to develop all his potentialities to virtues and beauties and at last as gold is obtained after tons of earth have been sifted in large cauldrons and many other processes he may become an ideal of humanity.
Whoever sincerely intends to become a true ‘human being’ and strives in this way for a whole lifetime will one day attain his ideal and discover his real essence. The one who pursues something usually attains it; a ‘door’ is opened to the one who knocks at it persistently. This is a Divine law according to which one can be elevated to the rank of humanity through pure intentions systematic thinking unshakeable resolution and uninterrupted strife. Man is sent to the world equipped with the potentialities to obtain these means and is promised help and support in his efforts to rise ‘upwards’. Therefore what is left to him to do is to use his free-will in accordance with his Creator’s Commandments and attain that rank through upward movements.

It is said that good people always win, however, it seems that the good ones always lose. Bad people always win both materially and spiritually. What is the reason of this?
This sentence is true in general. However, it may not be valid at all times. For example, some troubles and bad things may happen to a good person in this world. In the end, that person will get the reward both in this world and the hereafter in return for these troubles. It may seem that evil ones win and good ones lose but when the result is observed, it will be understood that the good ones win. Our creator Allah (SWT) promised this to us.
The story between Hz. Abraham and Namrud is a good example for us. Although Namrud won at the beginning, he lost it forever.
This world is a place of service and hardship, not a place of reward and comfort. The real duty of man is to know his Lord and to live according to the criteria He imposed. And this is done through worshipping.
Worshipping is divided into two:
1- Positive worshipping
2- Negative worshipping
The positive worshipping, as we know, includes salah-obligatory prayer performed five times a day-, fasting, etc. The negative worshipping, on the other hand, is the great good rewards that man gains when he accepts his weakness and poverty, and takes refuge in his Lord and shows patience when he faces diseases, calamities and natural catastrophes.
On the other hand, it is the prophets - primarily our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) - and pious people, who are the beloved servants of Allah, that have encountered the hardest of the troubles. If troubles were evil, as it is supposed, then Allah would not inflict these troubles on His most beloved ones. As it is stated in the hadith:
“The ones who are subject to the troubles and hardships most are the most virtuous ones and best of the humanity.”
The reason why Muslims face troubles and calamities more is that the punishment of the mistakes they have done in this world will be given here and not left to the Hereafter. As the big mistakes and murders are handled in big courts and small ones in small courts, the mistakes of the believers whose sins are few are cleansed in this world with various troubles and calamities, and not left to the Hereafter. However, the mistakes of the disbelievers are postponed to the eternal place of punishment, Hell, because the troubles and calamities of this world would not suffice.

THE CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN OF THE PROPHET (PBUH) : Fatima (r.anha)
Hz. Fatima (r.anha), who is the unique daughter of the Messenger of Allah and the honorable mother of the generation of sayyids, is the symbol of chastity and virtue that continues the pure descent of the Prophet.
Her mother is Hz. Khadija (r.anha), whom the Messenger of Allah could not forget, who was one of the most honorable women on earth and who had the honor of accepting the first invitation of Islam and belief. She was born as the fifth child of Hz. Khadija's six children at a time when the sun of the prophethood was about to rise.
The first years of her life, when she tried to know the world, coincided with the first period of Islam, when there were a lot of struggles and troubles. The polytheists started to torture and harass the Prophet, whom they could not dissuade from his cause. This young baby grew up in such an environment. The Messenger of Allah loved all of his children but he had a different love and compassion for Fatima. He felt that she would continue his descent and that she would be the mother of sayyids; he loved and hugged Fatima with the compassion of the holy generation that would continue up to the Day of Judgment.
When Hz. Khadija died after being married to the Prophet for 25 years, it was three years before the Migration. After this lofty woman, the death of Abu Talib, who was the Prophet's greatest protector against the polytheists, was so saddening for the Messenger of Allah and the believers that they called this year "the Year of Sorrow". With the death of Hz. Khadija, Fatima was left motherless. The Messenger of Allah did his best to prevent her from being sad and tried to relieve her by showing her the compassion of both a father and a mother.
The Messenger of Allah prepared her for the future like a rose bud; he virtually wrapped her in cotton wool. He kissed her when he left home and when he returned.
Fatima’s love and loyalty toward her father, who was the sultan of the prophets, was very big. Whenever she saw him sad, her face would change color; whenever she saw him happy, she would smile.
After the death of Abu Talib, the polytheists transformed their defamation and insults into harassment and torture, inflicting all kinds of bad deeds upon the Prophet. They committed all kinds of bad deeds including throwing dirt on him while he was worshipping and stoning him. Once, the Messenger of Allah returned home all of his clothes being in dust and dirt. Fatima, who welcomed him, hugged him and tried to clean the dust and dirt on her beloved father by crying. She wondered what would happen. Would the polytheists take her father, who was her only close relative in the world, away from her? These bad thoughts saddened the unhappy heart of young Fatima more. However, the sublime Prophet and compassionate father, who was sent as mercy to all realms, consoled this young girl, whose heart was sad, as follows:
“Do not fear my daughter! Allah will definitely protect your father.
Life in Makkah started to be unbearable for the Muslims due to the harassment of the polytheists. They were waiting for a divine manifestation. Finally, permission to migrate was given by Allah Almighty. The Muslims started to leave Makkah one by one. Meanwhile, the polytheists realized that the only way to stop Muslims was to assassinate the Messenger of Allah and they started to make plans. One night, when they were planning to realize their plan, the Messenger of Allah left Makkah secretly with Hz. Abu Bakr. He could not take Hz. Fatima and the other members of his family with him. He had to leave them in Makkah.
When the Messenger of Allah arrived in Madinah and settled  in the house of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, the first thing he did was to send Zayd bin Haritha and Abu Rafi’ to Makkah to bring his family members to Madinah. They went to Makkah at once and brought Hz. Fatima, Umm Kulthum, Sawda bint Zam’a, the wife of the Prophet, and Usama bin Zayd to Madinah. Thus, they left behind a dark and troublesome period. The Messenger of Allah rejoined his beloved daughter about whom he said, “Fatima is a part of me; anyone who saddens her saddens me; anyone who rejoices her rejoices me.”
Time flew and the cause of Islam proceeded to a bright future by getting bigger day by day. After the Battle of Badr, the Muslims confronted the polytheists at the Battle of Uhud. A tough war took place. When the Muslims scattered during the battle, the polytheists approached the Messenger of Allah and caused his teeth to be broken and he was drenched in blood. The Companions could not stop his bleeding. When Hz. Fatima heard about it, she ran to help her father and stopped the bleeding of her father by burning reed mace and using its ash.
The Companions showed great respect and love to Hz. Fatima. They called her “Ummu Abiha [her father's mother]” because she resembled the Messenger of Allah a lot. Hz. Aisha narrates,
“Whenever Fatima entered the room, the Messenger of Allah would stand up, kiss her and make her sit. Whenever the Prophet entered her room, she would stand up, kiss her father and gave her place to him. I have never seen anyone resembling the Messenger of Allah more than Fatima in terms of manners, sitting and standing.”
Ibn Abbas states the following by indicating the unique love between the father and the daughter:
“Whenever the Messenger of Allah returned from an expedition, he would definitely visit his daughter Fatima and kiss her.”
After the Migration, Hz. Fatima, who stayed with Hz. Aisha in Madinah, reached the age of 15. Some notables of Companions asked the Prophet to marry her and they wanted to be closer to the Messenger of Allah through marriage and to be honored. However, the Prophet refused them politely and gave the following answer:
“I am waiting for the decision of Allah about my daughter Fatima.”
One of the Companions who were refused by the Prophet was Hz. Umar (r.a.). When Hz. Umar received this negative answer, he said to Hz. Ali (r.a.),
“O Ali! It seems that Fatima will marry you.”
Hz. Ali (r.a.) wanted to marry Fatima but he did not know how to talk to the Messenger of Allah about it. He did not have the courage to do so. Finally, he decided to go into the presence of the Messenger of Allah. He narrated what had happened as follows:
“I went into the presence of the Messenger of Allah in order to ask him to marry Fatima off to me. However, when he looked at my face, I became speechless. I could not utter even one word. Then, the Messenger of Allah said,
‘O Ali! Do you need anything?’
Although he repeated the same question three times, I could not answer him. Finally, the Messenger of Allah said, ‘I think you have come here to ask me to marry Fatima.’ This time, I was able to say, ‘Yes.’ He asked, ‘Do you have anything to give as mahr?’
I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah! I do not have anything.’
He said, ‘I had given you some armor. What happened to it? ’
I said, ‘It is available.’
He said, ‘Sell that armor and bring me the money. It will be enough as your mahr to marry Fatima.’”
They bought some economical household goods with the money. The foundation of this blessed core of the descent of the Prophet was laid by the Prophet himself. He married them. He went to their house and sat between his daughter, Fatima and Ali. He asked for some water and made wudu with it. He sprinkled some of the water on   Fatima and some on Ali. Then, he prayed as follows:
“O Allah! Make this marriage blessed for both of them! O Allah! Make their descendants blessed too! O Allah! Protect them from the evil of Satan!”
Then, he read the chapters of al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq and an-Nas.
Thus, a hearth and home that would emit light and knowledge to the realms, that would bring up sayyids and that would be a source of abundance and virtue was founded. This home became a hearth that the Messenger of Allah visited from time to time and where he felt the happiness of Paradise. When, Hasan and Husayn, his grandsons, were born, this hearth became full of joy and happiness.
This blessed family formed the nucleus of Ahl al-Bayt. One of the two things the Prophet gave the glad tidings that would be a means of guidance for his ummah after him was the Quran and the other was Ahl al-Bayt, which was founded as it was mentioned above.
The Messenger of Allah cuddled his beloved grandsons, smelled and kissed them; he ran and played with them. He took great pleasure in serving them.
Hz. Ali narrates: “Once, the Messenger of Allah visited our house. Hasan and Husayn were sleeping. Hasan woke up and asked for some milk. We had a sheep. The Messenger of Allah stood up and went out to milk the sheep. I was astounded. The sheep that gave very little milk gave a lot of milk when the Messenger of Allah milked it. The Messenger of Allah started to feed Hasan with the milk. When Fatima saw it, she said, ‘O Messenger of Allah! You probably love Hasan more.’ The Messenger of Allah said, ‘I love both of them equally but Hasan asked for milk before Husayn.’ Then, he added, ‘O Fatima! You, me, these two young children and Ali will be in the same place on the Day of Judgment.’“
Once, the Messenger of Allah ate a meal with all of them; then, he put his garment over Hz. Ali, Fatima, Hasan and Husayn and said, “O Allah! They are my Ahl al-Bayt and Aal-Aba. Keep them away from the things that are contrary to your consent.”
Yes, his love toward Hz. Fatima was not only the love and compassion of a daughter; she was also the beginning of the generations of sayyids that would be the inheritors of his cause.
The Messenger of Allah was interested in both the sorrow and joy of this happy family. Once, he went to their house in order to reconcile Hz. Ali and Fatima due to a quarrel that took place between them. After entering the house, he made his daughter Fatima sit on one side of him and Hz. Ali on his other side. He held their hands and united them. Thus, he reconciled them. When he came out, the Companions asked,
“O Messenger of Allah! You were sad when you entered but now you are happy. Why?”
The Messenger of Allah answered,
“Because I have reconciled two people that I like very much.”
Hz. Fatima had qualities and merits showing that she was the daughter of the Messenger of Allah.
Once, the Messenger of Allah asked the Companions around him the following question:
“What is the best thing for women?”
None of the Companions who were there including Hz. Ali could answer that question. Hz. Ali went home and asked his wife Fatima the same question. She answered as follows:
“Why did you not say the best thing for women is not to see men and not to allow men to see them unless it is necessary?”
When Hz. Ali received this wise answer, he went into the presence of the Messenger of Allah. When the Messenger of Allah heard this answer from Hz. Ali, he said, “Who taught you this answer?” Hz. Ali said, “Your daughter Fatima.” Thereupon, the Messenger of Allah said, “It is a fact that she is a part from me.”
Hz. Aisha narrates an incident that took place one day near the death of the Messenger of Allah as follows:
“Once, Fatima, whose walking style was like that of the Messenger of Allah, came toward us. When the Messenger of Allah saw her, he said, ‘Hello my daughter!’ He made her sit on his right side. He leaned over and whispered in her ear. Thereupon, Fatima cried. Then, she said something else. This time, she smiled. Thereupon, I asked Fatima, ‘I have never seen you becoming happy so quickly after becoming sad.’ I asked her what the Messenger of Allah had told her. She said, ‘I cannot reveal the secret of the Messenger of Allah.’
When the Messenger of Allah died, Fatima told me about that secret. She said that the Messenger of Allah said to her, ‘Jibril reviewed the Quran twice this year. I interpret this that my life is about to end. You will be the first one to rejoin me.’ When I heard the first one, I became sorry; when I heard the second one, I became happy.”
Six month after the death of the Messenger of Allah, when Fatima was very young (28 years old), she rejoined the Messenger of Allah, her compassionate father.
According to the narration of Hz. Aisha, Hz. Fatima never laughed after the death of the Messenger of Allah until she died.
Once Hz. Hasan and Husayn, the grandsons of the Prophet, became ill. When the Prophet heard that they became ill, he went to visit them with Hz. Abu Bakr, Hz. Umar and some Companions. Hz. Ali, Hz. Fatima, and Fidda, their maid was at home. The Companions made an offer to Hz. Ali: “O Abu Hasan! Have you made a promise for Allah's sake to do if your children get well? Are thinking of a vow?” Allah’s Lion (Hz. Ali) said,
“Yes, if Allah heals my children, I will perform fasting for three days for Allah's sake.”
When Hz. Fatima heard her husband's vow, she said, “If my children get well, I will perform fasting for three days for Allah's sake too.” Fidda, their maid, also promised to perform fasting for three days.
Their prayer was accepted. Two young boys became well soon. They started to fulfill their vow. They woke up before dawn to start fasting. However, they did not have any food to break their fast in the evening.
Hz. Ali, went to Sham'un, a Khaybarian Jew, and borrowed from him about four kilograms of barley. He took it home and gave it to his wife, Fatima. He told her to make bread with it.
Hz. Fatima made some bread with some of the barley and put it on the table. They were about to start eating when the door was knocked. There was a poor man at the door, He said, “O children of Muhammad! I am a poor Muslim. I have nothing to feed my children. Give me some food so that Allah will give you food in Paradise.
When Hz. Ali heard those words of the poor person, he wanted all of the food on the table to be given to him. They gave their bread as sadaqah and broke their fast with water.
The next day Hz. Fatima made some more bread from the barley and placed it on the table. The door was knocked just as they were starting to eat. This time, an orphan came and said, “I am an orphan of muhajirs whose father was martyred. Please give me some bread.” This time, they gave their bread to the orphan and broke their fast with water.
On the third day in the evening, Hz. Fatima made bread from the remaining barley and put it on the table. This time, a slave who was a polytheist, knocked on the door. He said, “O Muslims! I am very hungry. Please give me some food.” These real believers gave their bread to him this time. They and broke their fast with water again.
In the morning of the fourth day, Hz. Ali took his beloved children to their grandfather. They went into the presence of the Messenger of Allah. When the Prophet saw the weak and anemic state of his beloved grandchildren, he started to cry. They were shivering like squabs due to the severity of hunger. The Prophet asked, “O Ali! What is the matter? Why did you sadden me so much?” Hz. Ali told him what had happened.
When the Messenger of Allah found out that the other members of the family were in the same state, he set off for Hz. Ali's house. When he arrived home, he saw that Hz. Fatima’s abdomen had touched her back. His sorrow increased. However, he was thinking about their spiritual ranks in the hereafter.
Just then, Hz. Jibril arrived and approached the Prophet. He gave the Prophet a divine glad tiding: “And they feed, for the love of Allah, the indigent, the orphan and the captive.” (al-Insan, 8.) Allah Almighty praised their self-sacrifice.

Abdullah bin 'Amr narrated that the Messenger of Allah said:
"The merciful are shown mercy by Ar-Rahman. Be merciful on the earth, and you will be shown mercy from Who is above the heavens. The womb is named after Ar-Rahman, so whoever connects it, Allah connects him, and whoever severs it, Allah severs him."

PROPHET MUHAMMAD (PBUH)’s BIOGRAPHY : The Expedition of Umrah.Part2
Like a Fountain with Ten Taps…
The place where the Muslims stopped at Hudaybiyah was a dry place. They were without water that day.
Meanwhile, when they saw that the Prophet wanted to make wudu from his pitcher, the Companions ran toward him. The Messenger of God said, “What is the matter with you?”
They said, “We are ruined, O Messenger of God! We have no water to drink or make wudu except the water in your pitcher.”
The Messenger of God put his hand on the pitcher and said, “Take, Bismillah!” Suddenly, water started to gush from among his fingers as if coming from taps. The Muslims drank from that water, made wudu and filled their pitchers up to the brim.
When Jabir b. Abdullah, who narrated this miracle of the Messenger of God, was asked  “How many of you were there?”, he answered,
“It would have been enough even if there were a hundred thousand of us! However, there were about one thousand and five hundred of us.”[ Ibn Sa’d, ibid, Vol. 2, p. 98. ]
The Second News
When the Messenger of God was in Hudaybiyah with his Companions, Budayl Ibn Warqa, the leader of the Khuzaa tribe, came to his presence with a few people from his tribe. The tribe of Khuzaa, which was one of the tribes of Tihama, had been the allies of Sons of Hashim, to which the Prophet belonged, during the Era of Jahiliyyah. After the emergence of Islam, they showed respect to that alliance and supported the Prophet. All of them, whether they were Muslims or polytheists, informed the Prophet about what was happening in Makkah.
Budayl said to the Prophet, “The Qurayshis swore that they would fight you. They will never let you visit the Kaaba.”
The Messenger of God repeated their aim of coming to Makkah: “We did not come here to fight anyone. Our aim is to make umrah and to circumambulate, and to visit the Kaaba. Wars have battered, weakened and harmed the Qurayshis. If they want, we can declare a period of cease fire. During this period, they will be safe. They should not prevent me from talking to other tribes. If I persuade those tribes and if they embrace Islam, the Qurayshi polytheists can become Muslims, too, if they want. If I cannot persuade the other tribes, then, they will be relieved and strengthened. If the Qurayshis do not accept what I offer and attempt to fight me, I swear by God, in whose hand of power my life is, I will fight them in the way of this religion, which I convey, until my head is cut off my body. Then, God will definitely keep his promise to help me.”[ Tabari, Tarikh, Vol. 3, p. 74. ]
Budayl said, “I will report the Qurayshis what you have told me.” Then, he left.
Budayl wanted to tell the Qurayshis about what the Prophet had said when he returned to Makkah but they said, “We do not need any news from him. We want him to know one thing: He cannot enter Makkah even if there is only one of us alive.”
However, Urwa b. Mas’ud, one of their notables intervened and said, “Why do you not want to listen to what Budayl and his friends will say? Listen to them! If you like what Budayl says, you can accept it; if not, you can reject it.”
Thereupon, they listened to Budayl. He told them the reason why the Prophet had come to Makkah and his offer of cease fire.[ Tabari, ibid, Vol. 3, p. 74. ]
The Qurayshi Envoy in the Presence of the Prophet
Urwa b. Mas’ud, one of the notables of the Quraysh found what Budayl said appropriate and said,
“Indeed, Budayl came here to show you the way of honesty and peace. Accept his offers and let me go and talk to him.”
The Qurayshi polytheists did not like what Urwa said. They said to him as if scolding him, “Go to Muhammad but do not come and tell us your view.”
However, Urwa went to the presence of the Prophet. He told the Prophet about the preparations of the polytheists, that they were waiting next to the Hudaybiyah Well and that they had decided not to allow anybody into Makkah.
The Prophet said to Urwa, “O Urwa! Speak for God: Is it appropriate to prevent these camels from being slaughtered, to prevent us from visiting the Kaaba and circumambulating it?” He continued,
“We have not come here to fight. We want to perform umrah and slaughter the camels that we want to sacrifice.
Tell this to my tribe, my family and my people: War has weakened them. Let them decide a period of cease fire between us. Tell them to let us visit the Kaaba. Tell them to let us perform umrah and sacrifice our animals. Otherwise, I swear by God that I will not stop fighting them until God keeps His promise that He will spread the religion of Islam on earth and until my head is cut off my body.”[ Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, Musnad, Vol. 4, p. 324; Abu Dawud, Sunan, Vol. 3, p. 85. ]
Urwa b. Mas’ud was talking to the Prophet and at the same time observing their attitudes and acts toward the Messenger of God. He admired the respectful acts of the Companions toward the Prophet and their submission to the Prophet.
When he returned to the Qurayshi polytheists, he told them about the aim of the Prophet and his observations expressing his admiration. He said,
“O my people! I have been to the presence of many rulers as an envoy. I swear by God that I have never seen any men showing respect to their rulers as his Companions showing respect to him. No Companion spoke without getting permission from him. When Muhammad ordered them something, everybody competed with each other to fulfill it. When the Companions talked near him, they spoke in a very low voice; they did not stare at him due to their respect to him and lowered their gazes. I realized that they would never leave him alone and they would not surrender even one hair of him to anybody; they would not let anybody touch his body. You can think of the rest yourselves!”[ Ibn Hisham, ibid, Vol. 3, p. 328; Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, Musnad, Vol. 4, p. 324. ]
Then, he said, “He offered peace; Come on! Let us accept his offer.”
The Qurayshi notables did not like this offer of Urwa; they even scolded him because of the way he spoke. Being disturbed by their scolding, Urwa left them and set off to Taif.
The Envoy of the Prophet
Both parties started to make negotiations in their headquarters and sent each other envoys with offers. The Prophet sent Khirash b. Umayya from the tribe of Khuzaa to the Qurayshis in order to inform them about his aim of coming. Thus, Khirash became the first envoy sent by the Messenger of God to the Qurayshis.[ Ibn Hisham, ibid, Vol. 3, p. 328; Ibn Sa’d, ibid, Vol. 2, p. 96. ]
Khirash b. Umayya told the polytheists about the aim of the Messenger of God but they did not want to understand him. They treated him harshly, slaughtered his camel and even wanted to kill him. However, when the people of Ahabish intervened, they released him. Khirash b. Umayya saved his life with difficulty; he returned to the Prophet and told him what had happened.
The Messenger of God did not attack them though they tried to kill his envoy. He acted cautiously and patiently. He waited for their new offers. His aim was not to shed blood.
One More Envoy from the Quraysh…
When the Qurayshis saw that the Prophet did not return despite what was said, they sent Hulays b. Alqama, the leader of the Ahabish tribe as their envoy to the Prophet. The Prophet recognized Hulays from a distance. He said to his Companions, “This man is from a tribe that shows respect to animals to be sacrificed. Release the camels to be sacrificed and direct them toward him.”[ ]Ibn Hisham, ibid, Vol. 3, p. 324; Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, ibid, Vol. 4, p. 324. ]
The Muslims directed the camels toward Hulays and uttered talbiya: “Labbayk! Allahumma Labbayk!”
When Hulays saw this lofty and innocent scene, he started to cry. He could not help shouting,
“Subhanallah! It is a very ugly act to prevent this magnificent congregation from circumambulating and visiting the Kaaba. I swear by the Lord of the Kaaba that the Qurayshis will be destroyed due to those wrong attitudes and acts. The Muslims came here in order to perform umrah only.”
The Prophet heard the words of Hulays and said, “Yes, you are right; O Brother from Sons of Kinana.”
Hulays had nothing else to say when he saw the scene. He did not want to approach the Prophet and talk to him due to his respect to the Messenger of God. He went directly to the Qurayshis.
Hulays and the Qurayshi Polytheists
The lofty scene impressed and softened the spirit and the heart of Hulays so much that he said to the polytheists bluntly,
“I think it is not appropriate to prevent the Prophet from circumambulating the Kaaba.”[ Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, ibid, Vol. 4, p. 324; Tabari, Tarikh, Vol. 3, p. 75. ]
However, the notables of the Quraysh had the view that nobody other than themselves could think truly. They were astonished and even infuriated when they heard what Hulays said. They insulted him by saying,
“You are an Arab of the desert! You are ignorant! Keep silent; you do not know about these issues.”
Hulays got very angry when he heard those words. He said, by defending the Prophet, “How can we prevent a person who came here to show respect to the Kaaba? I did not make an agreement with you regarding this issue. By God, either you will allow Muhammad to do what he wants or I will take all of the members of the Ahabish tribe and leave.”[ Ibn Hisham, ibid, Vol. 3, p. 326; Tabari, Tarikh, Vol. 3, p. 75-76. ]
However, even this threat did not persuade the Qurayshi polytheists. They persuaded Hulays by telling several lies and prevented him from breaking their alliance.
The Second Envoy: Hazrat Uthman
Negotiations through envoys continued.
The Messenger of God wanted to attain a definite result as soon as possible. He wanted to send Hazrat Umar to the Qurayshis in order to tell them why they had come.
Umar said, “O Messenger of God! The Qurayshi leaders know what a fierce enemy I am. I fear that they might assassinate me. There is nobody from my tribe in Makkah to protect me. However, if you definitely want me to go, I will go.”
The Prophet kept silent.
Thereupon, Hazrat Umar said, “It would be more appropriate if Uthman b. Affan went for this task because he has many people from his tribe and many relatives in Makkah.”
Indeed, Sons of Umayya, who were among the notables of Makkah, were all Uthman’s cousins.
The Messenger of God accepted Umar’s offer and summoned Uthman. He said to Uthman,
“Go to the Qurayshis. Tell them we have not come here to fight anyone; we have come here to visit the Kaaba. We will sacrifice these camels and return. Then, call them to Islam.”
The Prophet also told Uthman to meet the Muslims who are forced to conceal their religion and console them and to tell them that Makkah would be conquered soon and that they would not have to conceal their religion.
Hazrat Uthman went to the Qurayshi polytheists. He told them why the Prophet had come there and called them to Islam.
However, this negotiation did not yield a positive result, either. They said to Uthman, “Go and tell the person who sent you that he will never be able to enter Makkah and circumambulate the Kaaba.”
About ten muhajirs went with Hazrat Uthman to visit their relatives upon the permission of the Prophet. They also told their Muslim relatives that Makkah would be conquered and rejoiced them.
Hazrat Uthman does not Circumambulate the Kaaba Though he is Given Permission
Meanwhile, The Qurayshi notables said to Hazrat Uthman, “Circumambulate the Kaaba if you wish.”
Hazrat Uthman said, “No. I will not circumambulate it unless the Messenger of God (pbuh) does.”
The Qurayshis were disturbed by what Hazrat Uthman said and retained him for a while.
However, this news reached the Prophet as if Hazrat Uthman and the muhajirs with had been martyred by polytheists.[ Ibn Hisham, ibid, Vol. 3, p. 329. ]

ISLAM 101: Allah (God Almighty): The All-Beautiful Names of God: Part 2
If God Almighty had not introduced Himself to us with His All-Beautiful Names, we would never be able to comprehend the truth concerning these Names in what is going on in the universe or to know the All-Sacred Being Who is called by them. It is only through His making His Being, His Essential Characteristics, and His Attributes of Glory known that we are able to have knowledge of the truths that we know today, even though this is incomplete.
It is our belief that the Names in question are the titles of His Being; as a result we try to acquire bits of knowledge about the truth of Divinity, voicing our requests at His door, which is open to all, and constantly observe these Names in hopeful expectation that our requests will certainly be answered, provided we submit to His judgments and commands. We believe that we can overcome our various troubles and ailments and be saved from our centuries-old problems by turning to Him, using these Names, each of which has the effect of different mysterious medication, as intercessors with Him.
We approach the All-Beautiful Names and understand them in accordance with whatever meaning they have in God’s sight and in the way the master of creation, upon him be the most perfect of blessings and peace, perceived and interpreted them. We regard opposing considerations as deviance in thought and belief. How can we think and act otherwise when the Qur’an tells us that the denial of the Names, whether explicitly or by way of misguided interpretations, or the attribution of them, with their meanings and contents that are unique to God, to others than God is heresy? Declaring,
God—there is no deity save Him; His are the All-Beautiful Names (20:8),
the Qur’an refers to the whole of existence, including humankind and the universe with whatever occurs in it, to those All-Beautiful Names.
It is of great importance that every responsible person has recourse to the Divine Names so that they can have accurate knowledge of God and entreat Him properly and be able to establish a proper relationship with their Creator. We begin every good deed with His Names, and render every act of service under their supervision. We believe that any work done without having recourse to these will be fruitless. The Names Allah (God) and ar-Rahman (the All-Merciful) are of particular importance and have a special place in the Divine Being’s sight. They are the first door through which we enter the clime of prayers and entreaties.
Even though some philosophers and the theologians influenced by them have put forward certain differing views about the All-Beautiful Names, as they have done for the Attributes, the scholars of the Ahlu’s-Sunna have always acted with care, sensitivity, and self-possession. Without going into detail or useless interpretations, they have maintained that the Names can be identical to or separate from the Divine Essence. It has sometimes happened that they have asserted in a moderate style that the Names are neither identical to nor separate from the Divine Essence, thus preferring to distance themselves from further discussion.
No matter what their true nature is, the All-Beautiful Names Which God Almighty has taught us in His manifest Book are each a mysterious key for a certain sort of relationship with Him in the heart and the spirit; through these we can traverse our distance from Him, advancing toward nearness to Him, something that we are aware of in our conscience.
They are each a mysterious word which gives an answer when uttered. Those who possess these keys and regularly recite these luminous words are not left unanswered even when they attempt to purchase all the worlds, and are not turned back with empty hands when they become customers for the realms beyond.
Experiencing and knowing the All-Beautiful Names with their own depths is a Divine favor for God’s servants and a pleasure which will enrich their spirits, and in respect of their outer and inner senses or faculties, it is an awareness of “seeing,” knowing, and experiencing Him and of being seen and known by Him.
Those who reach this horizon work for God’s sake, begin every task for God’s sake, and do whatever they do for God’s sake; in the words of Bediüzzaman,
they can make the seconds of their life as fruitful as the years of other people by moving and stopping “for God,” “for God’s sake,” and “for the good pleasure of God.”
Why should this not be possible, as the servants are His servants, the Names are His Names, it is He Who is called by these Names, and the door to which the servants turn is His door?
Some scholars have asserted that God’s Names are only those Which God and His Messenger have taught us as Divine Names, and it is not acceptable to derive Names from certain Divine Acts or to attribute them to God as being among His All-Beautiful Names. However, it is a fact that many Divine Acts are mentioned in the Qur’an in a way that will lead to different Names.
Moreover, God Almighty has not taught us all of His Names. As our master, upon him be peace and blessings, stated in his prayer that begins with,
“O God, I am Your servant, and the son of Your male servant, and the son of Your female servant,”
in addition to the All-Beautiful Names Which are mentioned in the Qur’an and certain Prophetic sayings, God has Names Which He mentioned in the previous Divine Books or Which He particularly informed some of His servants about or Which He keeps concealed with Him.
However, we cannot know any of His Names unless He teaches them to us. We can know only the Names Which He has taught us either in the Qur’an or in the Sunna.
Abu Hurayra, may God be pleased with him, narrates 99 Divine Names from the noblest Prophet, upon him be peace and blessings.
Even though these same Names are narrated from the Prophet by Salmanu’l-Farisi, ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas, ‘Abdul lah ibn ‘Umar, and Caliph ‘Ali, may God be pleased with them, these narrations have not been authenticated. Some assert that the number 99 was used as a symbol of multiplicity in the hadith related by Abu Hurayra, therefore we cannot say that God’s All-Beautiful Names are restricted to 99.

PROPHET MUHAMMAD (PBUH)’s BIOGRAPHY : The Expedition of Sons of Nadr.Part1
THE EXPEDITION OF SONS OF NADR
(4th Year of the Migration, the month of Rabiulawwal / 625)
Sons of Nadr were a rich and strong Jewish tribe that descended from the lineage of Hazrat Harun (Aaron) (pbuh). They lived in strong castles two hours away from Madinah. They had signed a treaty with the Messenger of God stating that they would not take part in any activities against Muslims, that they would not help any enemies of Muslims and that they would contribute to the ransoms to be paid.[ Ibn Hisham, Sirah, Vol. 3, p. 199. ]However, they did not give up cooperating with the Qurayshi polytheists and Madinah munafiqs secretly. They increased their relationship with the polytheists and munafiqs especially after the Battle of Uhud.
As we have mentioned above, Amr b. Umayya had killed two people from the tribe of Amir by mistake. According to the treaty signed by Sons of Nadr Jews, they had to contribute to the ransom to be paid for those two people.
The Prophet (pbuh) went to the place of Sons of Nadr with Hazrat Abu Bakr, Umar, Ali, Zubayr b. Awwam, Talha b. Ubaydullah, Sa’d b. Muadh and Usayd b. Khudayr (may God be pleased with them) to demand a contribution to be paid as blood money and to find out how loyal they were to the treaty.
They welcomed the Prophet nicely and said that they were glad that the Prophet and his friends came to see them; they stated clearly that they would fulfill their duty.[ Ibn Hisham, ibid, Vol. 3, p. 199; Ibn Sa’d, Tabaqat, Vol. 2. p. 57. ]
The Prophet sat near the wall of a house with his Companions.
The Jews, who welcomed the Prophet seemingly nicely, started to whisper among them:
“Never would you get such a golden chance. If one of us drops a rock on him from the top of the house, we shall get rid of him.” Then they asked, “Who will do it?”
Amr b. Jihhash came to the front and said, “I will do it!”[ Ibn Hisham, ibid, Vol. 3, p. 199; Ibn Sa’d, ibid, Vol. 2, p. 57; Halabi, Insanu’l-Uyun, Vol. 2, p. 560. ]
Meanwhile, Sallam b. Mishkam, one of the notables said, “O my tribesmen! Obey me this time; then, oppose me after that whenever you want.”
He added, “I swear by God that if you try to do something like that, he will be informed about it by revelation. It will be very bad for us. It will be regarded as violating the treaty between us and him. Please give up that decision. If you try to do it, it will mean the end of Jews and the elevation of Islam till the Day of Judgment!”[ Ibn Sa’d, ibid, Vol. 2, p. 57.]
Jews, who were famous for betraying prophets, did not give up this decision. Meanwhile, Amr b. Jihhash, who undertook the duty of dropping rocks on him, went up to the roof.
Gabriel Informs the Prophet about the Situation
Just then, Gabriel arrived and told the Prophet about the assassination attempt and the betrayal. The Messenger of God stood up and pretended as if he was going to go to the toilet and set off for Madinah. The Companions waited there for some time for him to return. When they realized that he would not come, they left the place.
A Jewish Person Warns his Tribe
Kinana b. Suriya, one of the Jews asked his tribesmen, “Do you know why Muhammad left?”
They said, “No. if you know, tell us about it.”
Kinana started to speak:
“I swear by the Torah that I know that Muhammad was informed about the assassination you planned! Do not deceive yourselves in vain. I swear by God that he is the Messenger of God and the last Prophet! He left because he was informed about the assassination you planned. You expected him to come from the descent of the Prophet Aaron. We wrote clearly in the Torah: ‘The birthplace of the last Prophet to come is Makkah; the place he will migrate to is Yathrib (Madinah)’. The properties of the last Prophet comply with that definition. There is nothing contrary to his properties in our book. There will be nobody to fight you before him. I imagine seeing you loading your possessions on camels and migrate, hearing the screams of your children and seeing you leaving your property behind and leave! Obey me in two things and know that the third is no good for you!”
The Jews asked, “What are they?”
Kinana said, “Embrace Islam and join the Companions of Muhammad! Only in this way can you secure your children and possessions, reach salvation and avoid being expelled from your land and home!”
However, the Jews said, “We shall not leave the Torah and the oath of Moses.”[ Waqidi, Maghazi, p. 284-285. ]
The Prophet Sends a Messenger to Sons of Nadr Telling them“To Leave their Land”
The assassination attempt planned by the Jews of Sons of Nadr showed clearly that they were not friends of Islam and Muslims and that they did not remain loyal to the treaty they made with the Prophet. Therefore, the Prophet assumed a very definite attitude against them.
He called Muhammad b. Maslama and said to him,
“Go to the Jews of Sons of Nadr! Tell them, ‘the Messenger of God sent me to tell you to leave this land and not to live in the same place as him because you planned an assassination to kill him. You have ten days. If any of you is seen here after ten days, they will be killed’”[ Ibn Sa’d, ibid, Vol. 2, p. 57. ]
Muhammad b. Maslama went to the land of the Sons of Nadr. Before telling them about the order of the Prophet, he said,
“Tell me the truth for the sake of God, who sent the Torah to Moses: Before Muhammad was sent as a prophet and when the Torah was in front of you, I came to you and you offered me to embrace Judaism; I said to you, ‘I will never embrace Judaism’. You said to me, “What prevents you from embracing our religion? There is no religion other than Judaism. It is the same religion as the religion of Hanif that you are seeking and you have heard. The Prophet that will come to you has a shariah and he is a warrior. There is a slight red mark in his eye. He will come from the direction of Yemen; he will ride a camel, wear an ihram (cloak), find it sufficient to have a bone with little meat, have his sword hanging on from his neck and speak wisely.’ Did you not say so?”
Sons of Nadr Jews said, “Yes, we said so but he is not the Prophet that we told you about!”
Then, Muhammad b. Maslama told them about the order of the Prophet.
Sons of Nadr realized that the assassination attempt cost them dearly but it was too late now. They had nothing else to do but act in accordance with the Prophet’s order. They said to Muhammad b. Maslama, “We will migrate” and started to make preparations.
