With white actors, their stereotypes are clear satire, while their authentic portrayals of accents are taken seriously—African accents are not afforded that luxury. Part of the authenticity and grit we’ve come to love in Good Will Hunting (1997) owes to the fact that both Matt Damon and Ben Affleck speak in accents native to South Boston—which successfully shows the importance of class distinctions, Will’s intellectual ability despite his “rough” surroundings, and rooting him in his neighborhood and background even as he progresses to new places and opportunities. Part of the joy of watching Mary Poppins (1964), is the grating sound of Dick Van Dyke’s bizarre “Cockney” accent. Often noted as one of the worst accents in film history, Van Dyke’s character sounded like he came from New Jersey, Australia, but Poppins is a children’s comfort film filled with magic, so audiences are already prepared to suspend their disbelief.  Language, voice, and tone are vital parts of storytelling, but somehow caricature-like portrayals of African accents still manage to win Oscars, while Dick Van Dyke’s “Cockney” failure is an actor’s cautionary tale. This speaks to a larger issue: the hierarchy of occidental languages over languages from the global south, the (lack of) knowledge of African dialects, and a general laziness toward the research required to thoughtfully and effectively learn regional African accents. Alongside my research for this article, I also spoke to Djeneba Bagayoko, a linguist who specializes in African languages and is currently working on a book exploring the similarities in Ebonics and continental languages. When we discussed Beasts of No Nation—no nation indeed, as the film is set in an “unspecified” West African country—Djeneba pointed out the prevalence of guttural sounds and line delivery in a lower vocal pitch. While having a lower-pitched voice is completely within the rights of directors and actors to be a stylistic choice for a character, its unfortunate prevalence goes beyond artistic prerogative and seems closer to laziness or ignorance. Viola Davis’s accent in The Woman King is also delivered in a lower register, with an emphasis on guttural sounds and a sprinkling of that American English rhotic R that would not be present in a West African accent during the 1820s. Winston Duke’s accent in Black Panther (2018) also features guttural sounds, a low pitch, and even Nigerian facets of speech (adding “o” as a standalone sound at the end of sentences), despite the fact that the fictional nation of Wakanda is supposedly located in southeast Africa. Bagayoko rightly asked, “Why, when it comes to Africa, are we all lumped together?” Reducing Western and Southern African accents down to hard, low-pitched noises positioned at the back of the throat perpetuates the idea that African languages are too “other” for any attention to detail. The frequency with which we see this technique reiterates the view of Africans as homogenized and underdeveloped—a colonial perspective.

source: peter allen, formulascout.com format: article (profile) season: 2015, european f3 summary: formulascout profiles a 17-year-old charles.
Excerpt:
"Leclerc marked himself out as a real prospect in karting – so much so he topped our 2012 ‘karters to watch‘ feature, ahead of Verstappen. But it’s never a foregone conclusion that a successful karter will make a successful car racer. His debut season in FR2.0 was in some ways fairly low key with ‘only’ two wins, but the jump up from karting to continental FR2.0 is very rarely made to look easy by anybody. Leclerc ultimately finished as high up in the Alps standings as he could have been realistically expected to do so, given the presence of an on-form de Vries. It was actually up against tougher competition in the Eurocup that he really shone, with three consecutive P2s taking quite some doing in a series where nobody was particularly consistent.
Those performances suggested he would be capable of stepping up to F3, particularly as his old rival Verstappen had made it look easy and didn’t have the benefit of a year of car racing experience. And so he has proven to be. It’s still early days, but Leclerc has so far been the class of a large crop of rookies and taken the fight to proven F3 winners with multiple years of experience already under their belt.
His early performances are on a par with what last year’s star rookies Esteban Ocon and Verstappen were doing – in fact, his record of two wins and five podiums from the first six races replicates the 2014 champion’s start. If he keeps it up, he will deserve to be held in the same high esteem as them a few months down the line. [...] While he’s got plenty in common with his old karting rival and Van Amersfoort F3 predecessor Verstappen, a lesser reputation and sensible management mean he’s unlikely to be making the jump straight up to F1 next year. He will therefore need to sustain this impressive form into an intermediate category like GP2 in order to make the grade."
Monaco plays host to probably the most famous of any Formula 1 race each year but, perhaps unsurprisingly for a microstate of less than 40,000 people, it doesn’t have a history of producing its own successful Formula 1 drivers. Louis Chiron won his home race in 1931 but since his last participation in 1958 (the oldest ever F1 driver at 58), only Olivier Beretta in 1994 has represented Monaco in an F1 race. Clivio Piccione and Stefano Coletti have won in GP2 since then, but didn’t make it to the top level.
Charles Leclerc is only 17 but he is probably Monaco’s best chance yet of repeating Chiron’s home streets victory. A long-time protege of F1 driver manager Nicolas Todt, Leclerc was a star in karting and has had no trouble adapting to single-seaters, impressing in Formula Renault 2.0 last year and now taking up the mantle of being the star rookie in European F3. A winner on his debut at Silverstone, he added a second victory at Hockenheim last weekend and is just five points off the standings lead.
A quick history (so far)
Leclerc’s father Herve was a Formula 3 driver in the 1980s, and Charles began karting at the circuit owned by Philippe Bianchi, the father of Jules. Working his way up the ranks, Leclerc was French was French cadet champion in 2009 and the runner-up in KF3 and the Monaco Junior Kart Cup winner in 2010.
The following year, he claimed a CIK-FIA double, winning the Academy Trophy and the KF3 World Cup. Moving up to KF2 for 2012, Leclerc triumphed in the WSK Euro Series and took second in the European and U18 championships.
Tumblr media
Together with Max Verstappen, Leclerc took part in the KZ gearbox classes for his final year in karting in 2013, winning the Winter Cup and finishing second to his Dutch rival in the world championship.
Leclerc entered Formula Renault 2.0 for his rookie single-season season, embarking on the Alps series for Fortec Motorsports. He quickly became a frontrunner, making the podium at round two at Pau and then twice again at Spa. At Monza he won both races, and followed that with more podiums to secure second place in the championship behind third-year FR2.0 racer Nyck de Vries.
Some of Leclerc’s most impressive performances last year came in Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 as a guest entry. He took part in six races and finished second in the last three of those, up against lots of drivers with multiple years of experience in the series.
He could have made the full-time move to the Eurocup for 2015 but instead stepped up to Formula 3, and after testing for several different teams, signed with Van Amersfoort Racing. He would essentially replace Verstappen as team leader, working with the same engineer Rik Vernooij.
Leclerc was rapid in testing and demonstrated his pace on his debut weekend at Silverstone, scoring a double position and winning the final race of the weekend. At round two at Hockenheim he extended his podium streak to five consecutive races, and defeated F3 veteran Felix Rosenqvist in a battle for victory in the wet in race three.
Up next
Leclerc is just five points behind championship leader Antonio Giovinazzi, and so far he’s only raced on circuits he hadn’t competed at before. Next up on the calendar are Pau, Monza and Spa, and he tasted success at all of those last season. Therefore, it stands to reason that there’s yet more to come from Leclerc.
It’s a long season (there are 33 races) and plenty could happen between now and the F3 paddock returning to Hockenheim on the weekend of Leclerc’s 18 birthday in October. But based upon the first two rounds, there’s no reason to think of Leclerc as anything other than a serious title threat. Beating the more experienced Rosenqvist and Giovinazzi – driving for bigger teams in Prema and Carlin respectively – will take some doing, but he’s already given them a hard time. Anyway, his season’s hardly going to be a failure if he loses out and finishes up third as a rookie.
Talent and potential
Tumblr media
Leclerc marked himself out as a real prospect in karting – so much so he topped our 2012 ‘karters to watch‘ feature, ahead of Verstappen.
Off-track
No doubt assisted by the Bianchis’ tutelage, Leclerc signed with Todt Jr’s All Road Management firm in 2011. At present, Leclerc has no ties to F1 teams, but through his work with Felipe Massa, Pastor Maldonado and Bianchi, Todt has dealt with most of them and will be very well-placed to get his protege a role when the time comes.
A potential stumbling point is that most F1 teams are already overflowing with some serious sub-F1 prospects, but if he continues to impress as he’s doing at the moment, they could begin falling over each other to find a space for him.
Funding-wise, Leclerc benefits from partners usually tied to Todt’s projects, and watch maker Richard Mille (currently a sponsor of the Lotus F1 team) is his loyal main backer. And you’d imagine that being billed as a future F1 star from Monaco could well tempt some further future investment.
Verdict
In just his second season in single-seaters, Leclerc is quickly marking himself out as a star of the future with fine performances and two wins in his first couple of weekends in European F3, making him seriously stand out from a large and competitive grid.
While he’s got plenty in common with his old karting rival and Van Amersfoort F3 predecessor Verstappen, a lesser reputation and sensible management mean he’s unlikely to be making the jump straight up to F1 next year. He will therefore need to sustain this impressive form into an intermediate category like GP2 in order to make the grade.
But the signs are definitely there that Leclerc is one of the very top talents in the junior ranks right now, and that he’s capable of tasting success in F1 in the future.
His lifelong friend Bianchi was so sadly stopped in his tracks last year just when his F1 future was looking promising. In a few years’ time, Leclerc could just pick up where his mentor left off.

The Villainy of the Van Buren Sisters (1916)
In 1916, Augusta and Adeline Van Buren completed a 5,500 mile (8,851km) journey across the continental United States on separate motorcycles. They were also arrested multiple times for their villainous perfidy.
They had to contend with appalling roads, sometimes mountainous terrain, some remarkably unseasonal bad weather, and plenty of other issues... but they completed the trip, making them the second and third women respectively to cross the continental United States on motorcycles.
They were also the first women to reach 14,109-foot summit of Colorado's Pikes Peak by any motor vehicle.
(Which seems like cheating, but for all I know it might be harder on a motorcycle. A helicopter would definitely be cheating. Nevertheless, having done nothing more constructive on a motorcycle than fall off it, I'm still in awe.)
But they were, nevertheless, villains. Why was this?
Had they stolen the motorcycles?
Imagine the scene... a pair of hellions in suspicious hats hotwiring a couple of motorcycles, with naught but villainy in their eyes, and untrammeled mischief on their minds...
No. Their twin 1,000cc Indian Power Plus motorcycles (equipped with gas headlights) were legitimately purchased from the Indian Motorcycle Company. Back in 1916, these were the motorcycles to have, and they ran to an exorbitant US$275 each in the day. That's roughly US$7,000 in today's money.
The sisters were not short of a dollar or two, as they were descendants of a former US President, and came from a wealthy family.
Did they cause mayhem along the route?
It's hard to commit a ram-raid with a motorcycle, I'm sure... so were they the first women to do so on motorcycles in the United States?
Oddly, no. Not this either.
They certainly attracted attention, and they certainly committed crimes... but not in the way that you might think. There was no mayhem in the traditional sense. No bank robberies, no drive-by shootings, no burn-outs outside the Police station.
They did have to be rescued once, after becoming lost in the desert, but that involved one chap who was able to guide them back to a road... not a huge call-out on the tax-payer's dime.
Were they trying to promote anarchy or rebellion?
The first all-female motorcycle gang members, heading across the country on a recruitment drive? Trying to foment discord and thrust the United States into an era of calumny and woe?
No. There were no anti-government slogans, no "What are you rebelling against? What've you got?" showdowns. In fact, if anything, they were trying to be especially patriotic.
They were part of a 'preparedness' organisation, and wanted to show that women could be a productive part of the US war effort - as the US was steaming quickly towards entering World War I - and demonstrate that women could help to shoulder the burden of sacrifice for their country, even if they weren't allowed to fight.
Specifically, they wanted to show that women could become dispatch riders on the front-lines, able to travel long distances quickly and efficiently.
So, why were they constantly being arrested?
They were wearing trousers.
I don't mean that they should have been riding around with no pants on, as such... because that would have been chilly, and nobody wants flying bugs up their bits... but that even as late as 1916 there were expected dress codes, and women could be arrested for wearing men's clothes.
As the Van Buren sisters were wearing leather riding gear - including trousers and jackets - this was considered a ghastly breach of etiquette, not to mention the law, and couldn't be overlooked by... well, by the less-evolved members of society.
Technically, they should have been crossing the continental United States wearing dresses or skirts, and (probably) riding side-saddle... and according to media of the day, they were "using the national preparedness issue as an excellent excuse to escape their roles as housewives."
Ultimately the sister's petition to be allowed to be come dispatch riders was denied.
They each had successful later lives, however. Augusta went on to become a pilot, and Adeline became a lawyer.
In 2002, the sisters were inducted into the American Motorcyclist Association's Motorcycle Hall of Fame... but their epic journey - which would almost be a doddle with today's technology - and the ridiculous social barriers that they faced certainly deserves a wider audience.

@hisroyalmagnificence found the concierge
The fact that a hotel manager had business elsewhere in the city was not uncommon. Theirs was a different world that existed in the shadows of the general population and which had progressively expanded over the last decades, but still - alliances, partnerships, inspections and investments were done with those who did not necessarily trade gold coins from their presses.
What caused Melissa to grow concerned at first was the lack of communication - Magnifico did not often turn off his phone or failed to respond his wife. After all, theirs was a bond that surpassed etiquette and protocol. But maybe he had ran into someone from the High Table and devices had been collectively apprehended as tradition mandated... Perhaps she was worrying too much.
Until the first tape came in, delivered to their door in a nondescript envelope and by a street kid that merely said he had been paid to drop the package addressed to the concierge. It was an old cassette, but luckily there was an ancient TV and VCR set which was still functional in their surveillance room - but as soon as it started, Melissa wished it was all but an old, somewhat grainy movie.
There was no way that Magnifico - that her Nicolás - was in chains, strapped to a wall. Not him.
And yet, that was precisely what the video suggested; since the technology used was old, neither sound nor image quality were great, but the shows of torture were evident. Someone had kidnapped a Continental manager (off consecrated ground) and were subjecting him to unspeakable things while recording it all and sending it to his family. The first thing Melissa thought of was that she had to rescue him - immediately followed by a meeting with their daughters.
Now, the three beautiful daughters they had were no longer toddlers - instead, they had been groomed to take specific positions in that world of theirs. Rosalinda was next in line for manager; Narcissa had turned into a talented sniper and Florita was an expert in crafting poisons and working with toxins from their gardens. Each and every of the girls had a skillset, and they would need all of them - including Melissa's own training as the firstborn to a Welsh crime syndicate.
Together, they kept receiving and watching the tapes delivered every two hours or so - tracing the delivery kids was likely a dead end as they really were the homeless children that roamed around the district and who would have never been behind a master plot of that size. Instead, they joined forces in trying to see beyond the obvious, painful torture - any signs on the walls, trademarks on boxes, voices and hints that could disclose a location.
Melissa immediately contacted her peers; the girls used their own connections and pooled all resources together, from old-fashioned intel gathering to modern-day triangulation of Magnifico's phone and last known locations on CCTV. At some point, there was just one building that had been vacant within the designated perimeter which had seen suspicious movement of black cars parking around and people shuffling inside. That had to be their target.
With decisions made and all information available pulled up - from the map of the sewer tunnels to the nearby constructions for a good placement for snipers - Melissa did something that she never thought would happen: she unlocked the armory and grabbed most of the arsenal available there with her children. That damn book of his - the concierge had thought that it would protect him more than the fencing classes the brunette forced Magnifico to take.
Now, while she placed guns into holsters and checked the comms, Melissa felt her heart sinking - they were not too late, were they?
They would be able to reach Magnifico in time from whoever had taken him - there was no other possible scenario in her head. And, with a simple look at her kids while they got into a van to take them to the place he was likely being kept at, Melissa knew that the girls shared similar thoughts.
They would bring Nicolás home.

"I know you well enough; you are the old fool Van Helsing. I wish you would take yourself and your idiotic brain theories somewhere else. Damn all thick-headed Dutchmen!"
I know much has been written today about Renfield telling off Van Helsing and his psychological 'science' with this line, but I also can't help noting that he couldn't just stop at calling him thick-headed - like, he just had to go all the way and do that very upper-class Englishman thing of scoffing at the Continentals lol

Ancestors of James McCutchan who may have been a close relative of historical persons.
James McCutchan's great grandfather, William McCutchan Sr. William was born in Ireland. William's sister was Elizabeth McJohnstone, also known as Elizabeth McCutchan, their parents were Andrew McCutchan and Margaret Johnstone. She married John Hilliard, and was known in the United States as Elizabeth Hilliard. When she was a little girl, she attended church with her parents. They were friends of the Wesleyan minister, the Reverend John Wesley.
While they were at church one Sunday, Elizabeth wore a bow on her bonnet. Mr Wesley inquired “Is it a bow upon Betty?”, which was taken , Arad McCutchan reflected, as a reproof for undue gaiety in dress.
A note here on another line, the White family appears as an ancestor. We are also related to John Henry William White b 1602 , known as Elder John White. My 10th great grandfather. We thought we were also related to the Reverend John White b 1596- 1684, who was related to the Wesley family by marriage, but no definite connection has been made yet.
On the Ross side of the family, James Rounds was a private in the Massachusetts Continental Army. My 5th great grandfather. His brothers, Mark and Lemuel also served in the Revolutionary War. Lemuel was also reportedly a body guard for General George Washington. It was also reported that there was dissolving of the guards and reinstatement due to a plot which was discovered to kill General George Washington.
A newspaper article which quoted the Court Records of Massachusetts, Vol. 34, page 588, which lists all the men who served together was printed in the Biddeford Weekly Journal published March 17,1916 Biddeford, York County, Maine. (Maine was part of Massachusetts at one time).

EVs have emerged as the imminent future as sustainable living has become our first priority. The sales of electric cars and bikes are already through the roof globally. Moreover, governments are pushing for the integration of charging stations. So soon, there would be as many charging stations as gas depots. Thus, investing in companies involved in the manufacturing or distribution of EVs or their components is prudent.  The UK is one of the nations leading on this front. It is home to many emerging companies in this electric vehicle domain. These companies are bringing forth different solutions in this niche. They aren’t only making vehicles but facilitating the adoption of sustainable means of living. Because of this, they have become a promising investment option for investors.   EV Stocks That Are Likely To Remain Profitable This Year Experts have chosen these stocks based on their possibilities in the future. They are likely to expand, earn great revenues, and gain good value.  Zenobe Energy  Zenobe operates in the battery manufacturing and charging infrastructure niche. It also refurbishes used batteries and makes EVs more affordable. Moreover, the company is expanding at an impressive pace. It has maintained brilliant figures in terms of power storage and support of electric vehicles. When it comes to investment, the company has limitless profits of earning and distributing profits.  Arrival  Arrival manufactures electric passenger vehicles such as vans and buses. However, it has recently developed a car purpose-built for ride-hailing in association with Uber. Founded in 2015, the company has operations in the UK as well as the US.  In the year 2020, the company got listed on NASDAQ too. For EV stock investors, it’s a precious one. Onto  Onto is an electric car subscription service. It becomes a great choice for businesses that require vehicles for the short term. Also, the company provides some tax-saving benefits as compared to its fuel-run counterparts. It boasts of offering an all-inclusive service and a wide range of cars. It’s in a niche that’s going to be bigger and more profitable for investors. Tevva Tevva is essentially a technology that has done a remarkable job in the electrification of medium-duty vehicles. It has its own electric trucks that have gained a lot of attention lately. Furthermore, the company’s focus on R&D makes it a leader in this space. It plans to open manufacturing units in continental Europe in the near future. EO Charging EO is a charging solutions provider for electric vehicles at home and commercial places. It manufactures EV charging stations and cloud-based charging software too. The company provides services to the world’s largest companies including Amazon, Tesco, and DHL. Its distribution network is spread across 35 countries.  Conclusion EV stocks certainly bring great prospects for investors. They ensure good profits for a very long time. Also, most of these companies are likely to expand their operations. They can easily move to other lines of operations in renewables or sustainable energy markets. Therefore, investing in the aforementioned companies is something every investor should focus on. Still, it is recommended to do some evaluation instead of following the advice blindly.

About Timor Sea, facts and maps
Tumblr media
Timor Sea, arm of the Indian Ocean, lying southeast of the island of Timor, Indonesia, and northwest of Australia. Located at latitude 10° S and influenced alternately by the southeast trade winds and the monsoon belt, the area is well known for generating typhoons. The Timor Sea was the location for Australia's largest oil spill when the Montara oil field leaked oil, natural gas and condensate from 21 August to 3 November 2009. During the spill 400 barrels (64 m3) of oil leaked each day. East Timor is enclosed on the south by the rough waters of the Timor Sea (part of the Indian Ocean) and on the north by the calmer Banda Sea of the Pacific Ocean. The Timor Sea (Indonesian: Laut Timor, Portuguese: Mar de Timor, Tetum: Tasi Mane or Tasi Timór) is a relatively shallow sea bounded to the north by the island of Timor, to the east by the Arafura Sea, and to the south by Australia. The sea contains a number of reefs, uninhabited islands and significant hydrocarbon reserves. International disputes emerged after the reserves were discovered resulting in the signing of the Timor Sea Treaty. The Timor Sea was hit by the worst oil spill for 25 years in 2009. It is possible that Australia's first inhabitants crossed the Timor Sea from the Malay Archipelago at a time when sea levels were lower. The waters to the east are known as the Arafura Sea. The Timor Sea is adjacent to three substantial inlets on the north Australian coast, the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf, Beagle Gulf and the Van Diemen Gulf. The Australian city of Darwin which is located in part on the shore of the Beagle Gulf, is the nearest large city to the sea. The small town of Wyndham is located on the west arm of Cambridge Gulf, an inlet of Joseph Bonaparte Gulf. Rivers that enter the Timor Sea from the Northern Territory include Fish River, King River, Dry River, Victoria River and the Alligator Rivers. Rivers in the Kimberley region that flow into the Timor Sea include the Ord River, Forrest River, Pentecost River and Durack River. The sea is about 480 km (300 mi) wide, covering an area of about 610 thousand km2 (240,000 sq mi). Its deepest point is the Timor Trough (which some geologists consider is the south-eastern extension of the Java Trench, but others view as a foreland trough to the Timor Island "mountain range"), located in the northern part of the sea, which reaches a depth of 3,300 m (10,800 ft). The remainder of the sea is much shallower, much of it averaging less than 200 m (660 ft) deep, as it overlies the Sahul Shelf, part of the Australian continental shelf. The Big Bank Shoals is an area on the sloping seabed between the continental shelf and the Timor Trough where a number of submerged banks are located. The ecosystem of the shoals differs significantly from the deeper waters surrounding them. In May 2010, it was announced that a crater about 50 km (31 mi) wide has been discovered on the seabed of the Timor Sea. The International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) defines the Timor Sea as being one of the waters of the East Indian Archipelago. The IHO defines its limits as follows: On the North The Southeastern limit of the Savu Sea the Southeastern coast of Timor and the Southern limit of the Banda Sea . On the East. The Western of the Arafura Sea . On the South. The North coast of Australia from Cape Don to Cape Londonderry (13°47′S 126°55′E). On the West. A line from Cape Londonderry to the Southwest point of Roti Island (10°56′S 122°48′E).

Timor Sea Treaty The Timor Sea Treaty, which was signed on the 20 May 2002, led to the establishment of the Timor Sea Designated Authority (TSDA). This organisation is responsible for the administration of all petroleum-related activities in a part of the Timor Sea known as the Joint Petroleum Development Area (JPDA). The treaty was ratified in February 2007. Under the terms of the treaty, royalties on petroleum production in the JPDA are split in a 90:10 ratio between East Timor and Australia. It has been criticised because the treaty did not finalise the maritime boundary between East Timor and Australia. 2018 Maritime Boundaries Treaty The Australia–Timor Leste Treaty Establishing Their Maritime Boundaries in the Timor Sea was signed on 6 March 2018 at United Nations headquarters in New York in the presence of United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

Is Timor its own country? The United States recognized Timor-Leste, then known as East Timor, on May 20, 2002, when it achieved formal independence. Before this time, the region had been a Portuguese colony up until 1975 and was under Indonesian sovereignty from 1976 to 1999. The Island of Timor is currently divided in two parts: the West is part of the Republic of Indonesia with provincial capital in Kupang; while the East, whose capital is Dili since its independence, had been a Portuguese territory since the 16th century. Are there sharks in the Timor Sea? Points of interest. Large giant clam (~1 meter), black tipped reef sharks, turtles. Is East Timor Islamic?

The majority of the population of East Timor is Christian, and the Catholic Church is the dominant religious institution, although it is not formally the state religion. There are also small Protestant and Sunni Muslim communities. Is Timor a rich country? Timor-Leste remains one of the poorest countries in East Asia and is heavily dependent on foreign aid. Economic liberalization has largely stalled. Oil and gas account for more than 95 percent of government revenue, which is consigned to a Petroleum Fund that had assets of $19.5 billion at the end of June 2021. Is Timor a poor country? The world's newest nation - East Timor - is also Asia's poorest, according to a new report released by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The South China Sea and East Indies, eastern Mediterranean, Black Sea, North Sea, and British Isles are the most dangerous seas in the world, with the greatest number of shipping accidents in the last 15 years, according to a report released by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Which is the roughest sea in the world? From the tip of the South American continent to the northernmost shores of Antarctica: here's where you'll find the reputed roughest sea-passage in the world. Is Timor safe to travel? Crime risks increase at night, and if you're travelling alone. Smash-and-grab property theft from vehicles happens. Intruders have broken into homes where foreigners are known to be. There is a history of gang-related violence, robbery, arson and vandalism in major towns, especially Dili. Which country controlled Timor?
Tumblr media
The British governed the island in 1812–15. The Dutch and the Portuguese fought for supremacy over Timor, and Portuguese sovereignty over the island's eastern half was settled by treaties in 1860 and 1893, although the latter became effective only in 1914. Japanese forces occupied Timor during World War II. Why is Timor called Timor-Leste?
Tumblr media
Etymology. "Timor" is derived from timur, meaning 'east' in Malay, thus resulting in a tautological place name meaning 'East East'. In Indonesian, this results in the name Timor Timur. In Portuguese, the country is called Timor-Leste (Leste meaning 'east'; Portuguese pronunciation: ). Beneath the Timor Sea lie considerable reserves of oil and gas. Confirmation of the prospectivity of the Timor Sea came when Woodside-Burmah's Big John rig drilled Troubadour No. 1 well in June 1974 on the Troubadour Shoals about 200 kilometres (120 mi) southeast of Timor, and intersected 83 metres (272 ft) of hydrocarbons. A number of offshore petroleum projects are in operation and there is considerable exploration activity either underway and numerous proposed projects. A gas pipeline crosses the Timor Sea from the Joint Petroleum Development Area to Wickham Point near Darwin. The Timor Sea was the location for Australia's largest oil spill when the Montara oil field leaked oil, natural gas and condensate from 21 August to 3 November 2009. During the spill 400 barrels (64 m3) of oil leaked each day. The Montara Commission of Inquiry placed blame on the Thai company PTTEP, owner of the wells. Read the full article

Name ; Elizabeth "Betsy" Schuyler
Nicknames ; Eliza, Lizzie, Betsy
Age ; 18
Universe ; Hamilton
Personality .
Never the one for the spotlight, Eliza much prefers the company of a few people close to her. She isn't the type for large crowds and would often get uncomfortable in them. Elizabeth would often be seen with a book or two in her hands. She is an observer. The type that would remember who was there, what they were wearing, who they were with and so on and so forth. She normally stands to the side and watches people have fun. Although, if being forced to(Angelica and Peggy we're looking at you), she will participate in the activity.
Now, with that being said, she does have her bad side. She can get competitive at times. Often working herself to the point of exhaustion. She wants to be the best society lady but also be true to herself. That's a fine line for her to walk in however. She is a tad bit judgemental at times, believing in first impressions. Despite her dainty appearance, Elizabeth does have a temper. She will strike out with words rather than fists. She does have a sharp tongue. She has a strong impulsive side to her as noted by several people, mainly her family and friends.
History.
Elizabeth was born the middle child to Phillip Schuyler and Catherine Van Rensselear. She is the middle sister as she had a sister who was a year older, Angelica, and a sister who would be two years younger, Margarita 'Peggy'. The sisters were born with a silver spoon in their mouths. The Van Rensselear family were very wealthy and Phillip was a General in the Continental Army. They were from old Dutch families who settled in the area around the mid 1600s or so. They are able to fully speak and understand Dutch as both parents held firm in making sure they learned the language of their ancestors.
Growing up, life for Elizabeth had been wonderful. If not for one without constant worrying whenever her father would be called out. She spent most of her childhood learning how to read and playing in the mud. A lot of people had described her as a tomboy. She had matured around the age of eight, a late bloomer as she started learning how to become a proper lady of society. She learned how to walk properly, play the piano, sing, speak French amongst other things. She spent time usually annoying Angelica, following her around and asking a lot of questions.
Eliza is now eighteen and she is around the age where Phillip is starting to look for a suitable match for his daughters. She doesn't want to get married as of yet. She thinks that there is more to life at her age.

I’ll start with the my conclusion for emphasis:
It was these OFF DUTY MILITIA that intercepted Andre with the proof of conspiracy. They literally saved the nation. Something to think about these days.
For the history buffs..discussion of how John Andre’s captors have become increasingly maligned over time. Imagine that. History being changed.
Cliff notes version:
During the Revolution John Andre was the British major who conspired with Benedict Arnold to surrender West Point and capture George Washington. The fate of which would have changed the world forever of course. From the article:
The Continental Army retreated behind the Croton River after the Battle of White Plains. Militia and levies became the first line of defense in the neutral zone, the area of Westchester County, New York, between American and British forces. Due to the atrocities of loyalist militia units, patriot authorities passed specific laws governing who and what could be allowed to pass the lines, and ordered all suspected Tories out of American lines.[9] In June 1780 the New York State legislature authorized civilians to intercept cattle being driven to the enemy and awarded the confiscated cattle as payment.[10] To add to the mayhem, there were thieves that would steal cattle, say that they recovered them from the loyalist raiders, claim the cattle as prize, and sell them back to the Patriots at public auction.[11] These are the hoodlums that are associated with the Skinners today, the dictionary defining Skinner as “any of a band of irregular cavalry operating in the neutral ground of Westchester County, New York, during the American Revolution and claiming loyalty to both the British and American troops but preying on all persons indiscriminately.[12
John Yerkes, James Romer, John Paulding, Isaac Van Wart, Isaac See, and Abraham Williams were members of the First Westchester Militia who had just finished a tour of duty and now had a week off to do as they pleased. New York State allowed off-duty militia to earn some money by recovering stolen cattle and contraband as prizes.
It was these OFF DUTY MILITIA that intercepted Andre with the proof of conspiracy. They literally saved the nation. Something to think about these days.

Hot nights: US in July sets new record for overnight warmth (AP) Talk about hot nights, America got some for the history books last month. The continental United States in July set a record for overnight warmth, providing little relief from the day’s sizzling heat for people, animals, plants and the electric grid, meteorologists said. The average low temperature for the Lower 48 states in July was 63.6 degrees (17.6 Celsius), which beat the previous record set in 2011 by a few hundredths of a degree. The mark is not only the hottest nightly average for July, but for any month in 128 years of record keeping, said National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration climatologist Karin Gleason. July’s nighttime low was more than 3 degrees (1.7 Celsius) warmer than the 20th century average.
Files Seized From Trump Are Part of Espionage Act Inquiry (NYT/Bloomberg) Federal agents removed top secret documents when they searched former President Donald J. Trump’s Florida residence on Monday as part of an investigation into possible violations of the Espionage Act and other laws, according to a search warrant made public on Friday. F.B.I. agents seized 11 sets of documents in all, including some marked as “classified/TS/SCI”—shorthand for “top secret/sensitive compartmented information,” according to an inventory of the materials seized in the search. Information categorized in that fashion is meant to be viewed only in a secure government facility. The search for documents was reportedly preceded months ago by a subpoena and visits by federal agents including the head of the DOJ’s counterintelligence and export control section. “I can’t imagine why Trump would have this material,” said Neil Eggleston, former White House counsel under President Barack Obama. “It’s just hard to know why this whole battle ensued and why President Trump didn’t simply return it when he was asked for it.”
Mexican border cities hit by burning vehicles, blockades (AP) The Mexican border cities of Tijuana and Mexicali along with Rosarito and Ensenada were hit by gang violence that included vehicles being set ablaze and road blockades. The U.S. Consulate in Tijuana instructed its employees “to shelter in place until further notice” around midnight because of late Friday’s violence. It was the third time this week Mexican cities have seen widespread arson and shootings by drug cartels. The gangs appear to be targeting stores, vehicles and innocent bystanders in response to disputes or attempts to capture gang members. Baja California state officials said a total of 24 vehicles had been hijacked and burned at different points throughout the state: 15 in Tijuana, three in Rosarito, and two each in Mexicali, Ensenada, and Tecate. On Saturday, few people ventured out on the streets in Tijuana and many of the bus and passenger van services stopped running, leaving some residents unable to get where they were going.
Four Latin American nations back Castillo as Peru political crisis continues (Reuters) The governments of Mexico, Argentina, Ecuador and Bolivia on Saturday backed the continuation of Pedro Castillo's presidency in Peru, where he is facing several criminal investigations and constant threats of impeachment. Mexico, Argentina and Bolivia are led by left-wing governments that have supported Castillo in the past. Ecuador is led by center-right Guillermo Lasso.
Slurping to victory (Foreign Policy) A plastic thermos used to keep Uruguayan maté tea warm won an online vote to become the country’s 2022 World Cup mascot—twice. Uruguay’s soccer federation was unhappy with its first victory, apparently believing animal candidates—such as birds, horses, and wild cats—to be more appropriate for the two-time world champion team. So it hosted a fresh contest, this time with an open call for design submissions rather than a slate of five candidates. The plastic thermos, common in Uruguayan duffle bags, once again prevailed. In line with Latin America’s anti-establishment wave, a fan wrote online during the second contest that he was voting for the thermos “because [our soccer federation] is so corrupt it can’t even hold a mascot contest without meddling. … I’M WITH THE THERMOS TO THE DEATH.”
Russia’s economy shrinks (NYT) In the first snapshot to fully capture the costs of the war for Russia, data released today showed that the gross domestic product fell 4 percent from April to June, compared with a year earlier. The drop is the start of what analysts say will be a downturn that may last several years. Despite imports drying up and sanctions blocking financial transactions to such an extent that the country was forced to default on its foreign debt, the fall in G.D.P. was not as severe as some had predicted. This was in part because state coffers were flush with energy revenue as prices rose because of the war. But the economic toll is expected to grow heavier with time as Western nations turn away from Russian oil and gas, critical sources of export revenue. Western sanctions sparked an exodus of hundreds of Western companies, cut off Russia from about half of its $600 billion in foreign currency and gold reserves and imposed strict restrictions on dealings with Russian banks. The outlook for the coming months looks bleak. Russian companies will need to rearrange their supply chains as imports seize up and businesses have trouble getting replacement parts for Western-made machines.
Russia’s losses (NYT) Russia has not released a death toll from the mysterious blasts this week at its air base in Crimea, but a senior Ukrainian official said today that some 60 pilots and technicians had been killed and 100 wounded in the explosions. Russia’s leadership, which expected a quick victorious war when it invaded in February, has given questionable accounts about military losses in the conflict, now in its sixth month. When the flagship of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, the Moskva, sunk in April, U.S. intelligence confirmed that two Ukrainian missiles had struck the vessel, killing an unknown number of sailors. But Russia claimed that an accidental fire caused the sinking, which was the most significant loss for any navy in 40 years. The Kremlin’s tendency to underestimate battlefield losses is a deeply ingrained behavior that stretches back decades. For example, the official military toll for Russia’s disastrous first war in Chechnya in the 1990s is nearly 6,000. Most independent estimates put the real figure at perhaps twice that or more. Russia has not released figures about the number of casualties it has suffered in Ukraine since March, when it said that 1,351 soldiers had been killed. The U.S. estimate at the time was closer to 5,000. Likewise, Ukraine has not disclosed an official toll. The government said that between 100 and 200 of its troops were being killed each day at the height of the battle for Sievierodonetsk in June.
Switzerland’s melting glaciers reveal human remains and plane wreckage (Guardian) Soaring temperatures are prompting Switzerland’s melting glaciers to reveal their secrets, with hikers this summer chancing upon two sets of unidentified human remains and a plane wreckage lost for more than half a century. Two French alpinists found human bones last Wednesday while scaling the Chessjen glacier in the southern canton of Valais, a police spokesperson confirmed on Monday. A week earlier, another body had been found on the Stockji glacier near the resort of Zermatt, north-west of the Matterhorn. In both cases, Valais police said the process of identifying human remains through DNA analysis was still underway and would take “a few more days”. Police in the Alpine region maintain a list of about 300 cases of people who have gone missing since 1925. The plane wreckage was from 1968.
After Korea’s Floods (Foreign Policy) The floods that engulfed South Korea this week have provided the first major emergency for new President Yoon Suk-yeol and one where the enemy isn’t missiles coming down from the sky, but torrential rain. At least 11 people—including one child—have died in the floods, which came after the worst rainfall the capital Seoul has seen in more than a century. That four of those killed in the flooding lived in “banjiha” semi-basement dwellings—the kind popularized in the Oscar-winning movie “Parasite,” which featured a catastrophic flood scene—has thrown a spotlight on the country’s housing crisis, where home ownership is becoming out of reach for the middle classes, let alone those further down the economic scale. Roughly 5 percent of households in Seoul are believed to live in banjiha properties across the city. The housing market was a major issue in March’s presidential election, and outgoing President Moon Jae-in was repeatedly criticized for his government’s failure to tame it. Despite a raft of policy interventions, prices in metropolitan Seoul, where almost half the country’s population lives, remain stubbornly high, and the price of an average apartment there has doubled in the past five years.
Kenya on Edge as Media’s Election Tally Suddenly Stops (NYT) As results poured in from Kenya’s cliffhanger presidential election, patrons at a restaurant in Eldoret, 150 miles north of Nairobi, the capital, stared up at six television screens on Thursday night that were showing the competing tallies by Kenyan news media outlets. With 90 percent of the votes tallied, the two main contenders, William Ruto and Raila Odinga, were only a few thousand votes apart. Each had about 49 percent of the vote. “People are so tense,” said Kennedy Orangi, a hospital nurse brandishing two cellphones, “that they cannot even think straight.” Then the tallies ground to a halt. Suddenly, millions of Kenyans, who had been glued to their televisions, radios and phones since Tuesday’s vote, were in the dark about the latest results of a neck-and-neck presidential race that has gripped the country, and is being scrutinized far beyond. On Friday, Kenyan news organizations gave various explanations for stopping their counts, including fears of hacking and a desire to “synchronize” their results. But to many Kenyans, it seemed they got cold feet and shied away from having to declare the winner in a high-stakes political battle that pits Mr. Ruto, the country’s vice president, against Mr. Odinga, a political veteran making his fifth run for the presidency.
Momentum builds behind a way to lower the cost of college: A degree in three years (Hechinger Report) An article by Jon Marcus in The Hechinger Report describes “A rare brand-new nonprofit university, NewU [with] a comparatively low $16,500-a-year price that’s locked in for a student’s entire education and majors with interchangeable requirements so students don’t fall behind if they switch.” Part of the savings—and a big part of the draw—is that NewU offers bachelor’s degrees in three years instead of the customary four. Today’s students are looking for a more efficient education, and a three year degree—much as what is offered in European universities—appears to be just the ticket. As the article notes: “We didn’t think the three-year bachelor’s degree was going to be the biggest draw,” said Stratsi Kulinski, president of the startup college. “But it has been, hands-down. Consumers are definitely ready for something different.”

Chasing Lee Lansing (Chapter One)
By: Lisa Timmerman, Executive Director
Lee Lansing’s contributions to Historic Dumfries Virginia can never be overstated as he freely donated his time, energy, and resources to restoring and developing The Weems-Botts Museum and the historical heritage of Dumfries. Recently, I came across an intriguing binder in the Lee Lansing Research Library where he had collected correspondence regarding his own family’s history in Dumfries. Jump down the rabbit hole as we read his correspondence and research to discover how the Lansing’s history “repeated itself” in 1783 and 1936.
When Lansing moved from Albany, NY to Alexandria, VA, then Dumfries, he was aware of his family’s extensive genealogical lineage as he researched family history in college. His charismatic and quirky personality shine through his writings such as in his introduction to Dumfries Short Subjects, 21A, History Repeats Itself – The Lansings in Dumfries, “Much of this data is still in my files and comes in handy many times, without having to travel to a library – saving much time and shoe leather.” He was particularly interested in Colonel Gerrit/Gerret G. Lansing, an Officer of the Fifth Company, First New York Regiment in the Continental Army.
Tumblr media
(Lee Lansing, Official Marine Corps Photographic Section MCS, Quantico, VA. 01//21/1959)
On 11/05/1986, George Pitcher wrote to Lansing, thanking him for previous research and asking if he could help track down a book. “I was especially interested in the incident involving Gerrit G. Lansing that you describe on page M, where he was almost executed for desertion…I’m not clear why he was cleared of the charge: is it because he only pretended to desert, as it were, in order to persuade some of the genuine deserters to return to their regiments?”
Lansing replied on 11/10/1986, “The account of Gerrit G. Lansing is taken from that same publication, but the reason for his pardon came from oral history from my grandmother Lansing, an avid history buff, who left me a good measure of oral history to check-out. The author evidently had not bothered to delve into the reason Gerrit was pardoned and let the subject drop…”Gerrit evidently, with Col. Goose Van Schaick’s blessing, went to Mass. to either persuade his comrades to return or be arrested. Somehow he was discovered by a bounty hunter (which was the practice of that time), and he was brought back to a quick court martial. Col. Van Schaick had been in Albany on leave and when he returned he must have cleared Gerrit of the charges.”
When Lansing published his “Dumfries Short Stories” specifically on Col. Gerrit Lansing in 2002, he had resolved this conflict and did not mention oral history. After discussing the rampant unrest and desertion before Yorktown at West Point in 1781, he noted that troops left to reenlist in places where they could receive better wages. “Ensign Lansing found where his troops were bivouacked and proceeded to that location to try to persuade his friends to return to New York and their former company. Upon his return, on 21, July Ensign was court martialed and accused of desertion and joining the enemy; secondly he was charged with changing his name to John Johnson and re-enlisting in the Massachusetts Line.” According to Lansing, General George Washington pardoned and released Col. Gerrit Lansing due to Col. Van Schaick’s collaborating testimony.
Besides for his grandmother, Lansing recorded he had access to the original papers kept by a relative. “Unlike some officers he did not write letters home to his family but in place thereof he kept an accurate record of his exploits in the form of a journal. This journal, unlike some, “in book form”, was composed of “bits-and-pieces”, each delineating – a “campaign”, or individual task, from start to finish. He noted a few issues with the papers themselves, mainly “were on “browning paper” – torn and or in bad condition – written in what was like a lead pencil, not in order of time, bit in what seemed to be placed after being inspected and bunched together – some very hard to decipher.” Lansing went further to try to deduce if the papers were written indoors or outside, “My observation came to the conclusion that these sheets had been done when a Tavern or other comfortable structure was available. Checking on their position I found that they conformed to the Tavern, on the rise of the hill, in Stafford, near the Acquia Creek and the Tavern in Dumfries adjacent to the Town Square where they camped for the night.”
Lansing then takes the reader on a tour with Col. Lansing as he travels from Stafford to Dumfries. While the entire tour is fascinating, I’ve summarized a few of the more intriguing observations below:
“Upon inspection of the 1762 Courthouse and looking into the small deck containing the whipping post, the pillory and the dick at the waters edge – they were prone to get ot the “Tavern”, raise their tends and get some rest – no mention of cider, was with previous camping locations was made in note form on the edge of the place. They were greeted by the Sheriff and made welcome. He answered their many questions especially as to why the Town had two courthouses, referring to the Tebbs House on the hill behind the Tavern. The troops were amazed at the “all header bond” masonry, on both structures, as this method was not found in the Tri-city Area of New York.”
“At sun rise many of the men were “walking the Town” amazed at the small size, with only about fifteen structures along Main St., and twice as many vacant lots with signs of fire having destroyed the buildings thereon many years ago. Also the men commented on the few citizens in the Town. Its merchandize establishments, in general had much empty space on their shelves and seemed to do business by trading in lieu of ‘coins of the realm”, purchases.”
In the end, Lansing felt satisfied with the information he salvaged from the damaged packet of “bits and pieces”. While he did not include any sources or provide photographs, he noted that six different accounts had been found documenting the military’s use of the town for lodgings. As we continue to delve into Lansing’s research, we hope to find more sources and materials documenting his considerable knowledge and service to the Town of Dumfries.
