Boston Letter 2 ((November 25, 1964), 8(9))

For her second iteration of Boston Letter, Krauss reviewed "Recent American Drawings" at Brandice University, notably featuring the works of Robert Indiana, and de Kooning; taking the opportunity to explore Pop Art which was evolving from burgeoning to becoming a more established aesthetic voice. Krauss reviewed was the Institute of Contempoary Art, "Biennale 8" featureing the works of artists featured in the Venice Biennale that year, notably Robert Rauschenberg's Tidelines. She also featured Louise Nevelson's Silent Music VII, which was at Pace Gallery (in one of its last years at its founding Boston location.) The last review was of Rosalyn Drexler 's work at Ward-Nasse Gallery.

Cultural life

Cultural life picking up. Last month has seen three contempoary dance events, one Cantonese opera, one feature film, one documentary and now a concert.

Always a pleasure to hear Piazzolla’s music, though will there ever be an evening that doesn’t feature Libertango? I guess the problem is we never get past introductions/homages to Piazzolla, so never get to hear to the other stuff. Perhaps not helped by the concert only being just over an hour. Would have liked more.

First time to hear Ginastera (I think). Fun, though also a little blocky and reminiscent of other efforts to bring folk music into the classical repertoire – quite 20th century in other words.

i think a lot of people that preach against studying The Classics cause it’s all eurocentric and stuff never really contest the idea that the western tradition is the only one that produces “classics”. like i think there’s a very weird assumed dichotomy of eurocentric = classical and everything non-eurocentric = contempoary. there’s great classical art and literature from non-western cultures. classical indian music is an entire world of study, just like classical european music is. there’s like, tremendous bodies of scientific and literary study within the islamic world in africa and the middle east. timbuktu had the largest library in the world for centuries. i think it would be extremely valuable to focus more on all that stuff when discussing decolonizing notions of classical study.

Pet would be my old family dog Flashlight's ghost ha--Ghost dog! I still see Flashy in dreams and sometimes she even talks to me! My spirit animal.

Famous brought back to life would have to be either Syd Barrett (back when he played music maybe) or Harpo Marx, the holy fool! (and I like almost no current "comedy" ha)
