History memes #49
So, fun fact, most of the army that conquered the Aztecs were actually made up of other peoples in Mexico who decided they hated the Aztecs more than the newly arrived Spanish

I got this Conquistadwarf from eBay a long while back. The seller doesn’t appear to exist anymore and I can’t find who originally modelled it.
If you recognise the sculpt let me know, the quality of the print doesn’t really bother me but I imagine some of the detail is lost so I would like to get a better one.

Centuries ago, Juego de Pelota, not soccer, was South America’s most popular game. Long lost to history, it’s now being revived by a group of Mexican athletes.

Journey of Honour / Kabuto (1991)
Mayeda (Sho Kosugi) is a loyal retainer of Tokugawa Ieyasu (Toshiro Mifune) who won the Battle of Sekigahara. Unforunately, he lost his wife and son during the battle, as they were trying to protect the son of Tokugawa, Yorimune (Kane Kosugi) from enemy capture.
Tokugawa sense that a new war is approaching and sends Mayeda with Yorimune to Spain to acquire more muskets from King Philip III (Christopher Lee), much to the agitation of a Spanish Lord, Pedro (David Essex), who doesn't want to sell weapons to non-believers.
It makes matters worse, when his to soon to be wife, an English Princess, Cecilia (Polly Walker) is intrigued by Mayeda. She wants to escape the arranged marriage and travel to the East with Mayeda to Japan but Mayeda is torn between her and his duty to the Shogun.
After watching Shogun 2024, I want them to remake this movie! It's set around the same period where the Catholic Spanish and Portuguese are taking a strong interest in Asia, and Japan itself. Would be cool to see a Samurai and a Conquistador duel!

The Fall of Tenochtitlan
The fall of Tenochtitlan on 13 August 1521 was a decisive moment in the dramatic collapse of the Aztec empire which had dominated Mesoamerica. Led by Hernán Cortés (1485-1547), the Spanish conquistadors enjoyed superior weapons and tactics. In addition, the Old World visitors brought with them terrible new diseases that caused massive loss of life amongst the indigenous Americans.

Page 6 of Códice Maya de México, Maya (about 1100),
When the conquistadors arrived in the Americas, they destroyed nearly all the books and manuscripts they found that had been created by Indigenous scribes. Only four pre-Conquest Maya manuscripts are known to have survived, and the Códice Maya de México is the oldest, estimated to have been written about 900 years ago.
Throughout 20 pages, several of which are now missing, the book carefully tracks the movement of Venus across the sky, alongside depictions of several deities.
Rumored to have been found in a cave in Chiapas in the mid-1960s, the Códice was exhibited in New York in 1971 before being seized in 1976 by the Mexican government, citing the United States-Mexico Artifacts Treaty of 1970.
Mineral and organic pigments on bark paper prepared with gesso,
7 1/16 × 4 15/16 inches.
