Has anyone else noted the parallels between the deaths of Admiral Zhao and Chin the Conqueror? Both proudly went to their deaths in the face of defeat by the Avatar when they could've easily saved themselves, but Zuko offered to help Zhao whereas Kyoshi was more like "LOL bye then"

The pretty girl genes
My personal headcanon/fav wack theory is that the families with magic in their blood, like the Targaryen or the Stark, often have two phenotypes. The bulky phenotype and the pretty girl phenotype. I don't say this in a gendered sense, just as a general aesthetic. The pretty girl parts of the family are usually softer in aspect, and have those fairytale airs about them. The bulky parts on the other hand are the people that will scare you off based on appearance alone. It's not the sneer in their face or the wildness of their demeanor, it's just that they look like they could really fuck you up.
For the Targaryen, the pretty girl genes are dominant. You rarely ever get some dude like Maegor who was just massive all around. I mean. Aegon The Conqueror was just some anime twink. Look at this guy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This isn't some dude you'd wanna cross the street to avoid. He's really just some twink. And most of the Targaryens are Like That. Maegor is one of the few exceptions, and I'm going to put in Maelys Blackfyre in that category too, but take at some of the most feared ones for having their heads up their asses like Aerion the Bright, or crazy Aerys.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aerion is pretty even being punched in the face.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aerys always looks like he's constipated anyways but he's still built like a pretty girl. You get exceptions that pop up once in a lifetime when the stars and planets align and someone manages to get the bulky genes from both sides.
Now, for the Stark, and i'm probably guessing the north in general, considering they come from a different lineage/ethnicity altogether, have some different shit going on. The Targaryen got, from outsiders to the house, andal blood (Arryn, Martell [rhoynar too, in this case]). In theory, the Dayne were of the first men, but with the andal invasion, there's likely been a lot of mix up, and the same is to be said of the Blackwood and the Hightower. The only arguably more direct line (though i doubt they haven't really married with other andal houses too) are the Baratheon. ...The Velaryon hadn't as much self imposed restrictions for marriage as the Targaryen did, so there's probably one shit ton of outside marriages for them too. I can be very wrong about all this bc it's pretty hard to track when we don't have all that much info on family trees, but honestly i don't care, this is my wack theory and you'll bear with me. The Targaryen are fairly easier to track because of the, yknow, whole incest business.
The north doesn't really get on with outsiders, though. They pretty much stay there, doing their thing, trying very hard not to stick themselves in all this court bullshit. For the Stark line, mostly only the daughters married people from the outside, meaning they don't partake in the main line, and are instead accounted for in other family trees. The women who weren't northeners are Blackwoods, who have, though likely joined with andals on the long run, a first men origin, and one Catelyn Tully, who has this same claim to her bloodline. I don't count the Manderly as outsiders, seeing as they, as the Stark and most if not all of the north, a claim to the first men origin.
Now, the Starks often seem to be the imposing, bulky type that we don't really see all that often with the Targaryen. They all mostly seem tall and imposing from the accounts we have. We'll say for this purpose, the pretty girl genes are actually recessive for them. The only two described Stark women that aren't Catelyn's Arya or Sansa are Alarra Stark, who was described by her father as "as sweet to look upon as any southron lady", and Lyanna, The Lyanna. Lyanna wasn't described to be beautiful in the same way that Elia was, being wild and slim where Elia was delicate. I am a firm believer of pretty girl Lyanna -- though, yes, i don't think she was pretty in the same manner as ladies from other ethnicities were, all pretty girls, but different brand of pretty girl. North pretty girl is wilder and all that.
And then we get to what for me is the funny part. I know, I know, not all of us like or are into the R+L=J theory, but I do, and since this is my post only my opinion matters. Whatever was the nature of the relationship between them, we get lil pretty Jon. Jon always gets described as pretty. He's prettier than daughters, he gets confused for a girl a time or two if i remember it right, and in comparison to what Robb looks like, Tully features aside, he looks way softer. This doesn't seem to have been a problem Ned Stark had, from what was told so far, to have been to pretty it became annoying.
Rhaegar, however, was never really different from what a Targaryen man was expected to look like. People already expected them to look pretty and soft and graceful and stare into the distance after something no one else could understand.
What I'm saying is that Jon managed to snag TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF PRETTY GIRL. That's why he's Like That.
Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

ASOIAF/GOT/HOTD theory that just hit me like lightning
the maesters were sexist westerosi outsiders who mistitled the three conquerors: aegon was the dreamer, visenya the conqueror, and rhaenys the ruler.
aegon brought the seven kingdoms together bc of his dream of the long night but visenya was the one with the conqueror's temperament. the line of targaryens descends from rhaenys bc aenys was a velaryon-sired bastard(in order to maintain the valyrian beauty and divert suspicion from aegon being impotent) and "aegon's dagger" was actually hers originally.
even though all three targaryen heirlooms are equally important - THE DRAGON HAS THREE HEADS - the average westerosi citizen/noble regards them as unequal. blackfyre is considered the king's weapon bc aegon wielded it, visenya was a woman, and a dagger is just a dagger. but the truth of it is, blackfyre(aegon's myth) protects the order amongst the kingdoms, dark sister(visenya's will) protects loyalty to their family, and catspaw(rhaenys's blood & subsequent children, "of my blood will come the prince that was promised") protects the realm/life.
the loss of blackfyre thematically parallels how the seven kingdoms have been growing more separate/unbalanced. the loss of dark sister signifies how the targaryens are eating themselves alive with each generation rather than protecting one another. finally, rhaenys' dagger is the only heirloom still in circulation bc even despite these things, at least two targaryens yet live that could protect the realm from the cold and the dark-

𝙷𝙴𝙰𝙳𝙲𝙰𝙽𝙾𝙽: 𝐎𝐧 𝐑𝐡𝐚𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐫 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫
𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐏𝐑𝐈𝐍𝐂𝐄 𝐎𝐅 𝐃𝐑𝐀𝐆𝐎𝐍𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐍𝐄 was known to be a great knight, by all accounts. Even though he had no true love for lance or sword, he was skilled in their use, and this is another testament to how he “excelled at everything he put his mind into”.
We know Rhaegar started training in his teenage years, when he discovered a scroll ( likely with more information on the prophecy, and who the prince that was promised was ). His words were, “I will require sword and armor. It seems I must be a warrior.” Despite starting training later than some other noble boys might do, with absolutely no prior experience or love for it, he became one of the most respected warriors of his time. But it’s important to point out that unlike some of those other boys, he did have access to some of the best training, including members of the Kingsguard. I’ve no doubt he trained mostly with Ser Arthur Dayne ( who was the same age or a year younger than him ), who would become his closest friend in time.
“Prince Rhaegar’s prowess was unquestioned, but he seldom entered the lists. He never loved the song of swords the way that Robert did, or Jaime Lannister. It was something he had to do, a task the world had set him. He did it well, for he did everything well. That was his nature. But he took no joy in it. Men said that he loved his harp much better than his lance.” “He won some tourneys, surely,” said Dany, disappointed. “When he was young, His Grace rode brilliantly in a tourney at Storm’s End, defeating Lord Steffon Baratheon, Lord Jason Mallister, the Red Viper of Dorne, and a mystery knight who proved to be the infamous Simon Toyne, chief of the kingswood outlaws. He broke twelve lances against Ser Arthur Dayne that day.”
We don’t know when Arthur joined the Kingsguard exactly, but the earliest recount of him being a member is the Lannisport tourney in 276 AC, where Rhaegar would’ve been newly knighted at 17 and Arthur either older, the same age or 16 at youngest ( I do think he was older, but not too much ). Ser Arthur was well renowned as one of the best, not only as a tourney knight but with battle experience as well, something he likely imparted on the prince during lessons. Arthur defeated him in that tourney, but then during the tourney at Storm’s End at least a year or two later, Rhaegar bested him, and then we have Harrenhal, where the prince emerged the champion. For this, I headcanon that he had the intent to win, because he had a purpose in doing so: to crown Lyanna. So he put his mind into it, and he achieved his purpose.
It’s also important to note that being a tourney knight is not the same as a battle experienced knight, and we have no canon knowledge that he did participate in actual battles. Viserys in the show said Rhaegar was ‘good at killing’ according to Dany, but these are words that I don’t think can be taken for granted. If I were to apply them, it would be in the sense that he probably executed those sentenced to die himself, especially when he ruled in Dragonstone. I actually do go with this, in the few instances that I’ve written similar plots.
“Ser Jorah named Rhaegar the last dragon once. He had to have been a peerless warrior to be called that, surely?” “Go on,” she urged. “You may speak freely to me.” “As you command.” The old man leaned upon his hardwood staff, his brow furrowed. “A warrior without peer … those are fine words, Your Grace, but words win no battles.” “Swords win battles,” Ser Jorah said bluntly. “And Prince Rhaegar knew how to use one.”
That Rhaegar was so skilled in jousts with lance also entails that he was an excellent horse rider. This is something he probably learned to do before taking up arms to become a knight, because it seems he did like to wander; for example, his lone travels to Summerhall. I don’t think he was Lyanna level at all, of course, but he was good. Being a jousting and/or tourney knight means he wasn’t that good as a swordsman? Not at all true either. Again, he trained with some of the best, he wanted to become a warrior, and as it was so said, he excelled at everything he put his mind into. And I doubt it was any different for that. I think the one testament we have for this is the one canon battle we have: the Battle of the Trident.
His opponent was Robert Baratheon, who had monstrous strength and skill, he was the representation of Thor in GoT/ASOIAF swinging his war hammer around. Robert, unlike Rhaegar, delighted in battle and he loved to fight, and it was likely he began his training earlier ( yes, Rhaegar was older than Robert, but am sure he had at least 2 years or so earlier in training than Rhaegar ). Also unlike Rhaegar, Robert had every intention of killing in that battle, whereas it was very possible that such was not the case for the prince. Despite this, Rhaegar still managed to wound Robert badly enough for him to not be able to continue the war until he recovered.
There’s also the variables of armor, and their choices in weapons. With one powerful blow, Robert killed Rhaegar, it was all it took to break that armor and cave his chest in. Rhaegar, on the other hand, fought with sword against armor and a man with brutal strength and angry, killing intent, it would take much more than a single strike ( because he probably did not want to kill Robert ), to incapacitate him. Most likely, the best blows he landed on Robert were on horseback, considering that Rhaegar ( for what we have seen in tourney performance ) was a better horse rider, and he might’ve had some edge then. But once the battle was on foot, that’s when things probably turned ugly for the prince.
I do like to headcanon that Rhaegar maybe let his guard down because of that lack of killing intent. Maybe he believed Robert was weak enough to try and stop the fight, completely underestimating his cousin’s hate towards him, and Robert exploited that, landing the fatal blow while the prince was trying to be ‘noble, honorable, valiant’. Not to mention the heir also very possibly believed that ‘fate’ was by his side. But the fact remains that Robert was the better fighter, not only in intention but brute strength. Would Rhaegar have been able to win if he had that intent, as he was said to excel at whatever he put his mind into? I can’t really say because it would’ve depended on other factors too that can’t really be predicted, such as something as simple as random luck.
This is on headcanon grounds, but Robert loved that fight not only for the glory and victory ( it didn't feel like a victory to him ), but because Rhaegar gave him a worthy challenge, he put up a fight. The prince that had less training years, no battle experience, no love for fighting, no killing intent; wounded Robert enough for him to pull away from the war in order to recover.
I think this ( Robert needing to recover from the battle ) as the only canon information we have, is more than enough to tell us of Rhaegar’s swordsmanship and ability in battle, outside of tournaments and jousting. And it’s knowledge I use and apply to his character as well, so I thought it would be good to share in how I come to this conclusion, that it’s not just because people said Rhaegar was skilled. He was an excellent jouster as much as he was a great swordsman. In survival AUs, specifically in those where he’s saved and taken to Essos and he eventually becomes a sellsword, his skills would undoubtedly be even better.
But anyway, I hope this post helped give some more insight into my portrayal of Rhaegar ( because that is really the reason why I do these, to help current and potential RP partners learn more of my take on him ), and thank you for taking the time to read!

Fire and Blood - 2
Tumblr media
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3  | Part 4 | Part 5
Hi all, I feel like explaining a couple of things to whomever chooses to read this: ● I could not find a precise timeline of the Century of Blood nor for the period of time Aegon had been East, so I decided to set this approximately 10 years before the conquest. This makes Aegon around 17 years Old, Visenya is two years older than him and Rhaenys is around two years younger than Aegon. ● I know there were no Dornish involvment in this part of Essosi history, bu i felt like a good start, so bear with me. ● Princess Deria was born in 35 BC, so she's about 8 years older than Aegon. I could not find any material on her family members apart from her father Nymor and her grandmother Merya. I imagine that there were other Martells living at the time, so I invented the character of Oberyn, who's her older uncle (I like the name lol). He's at least a decade older then her. Warnings: None really in this chapter, there’s just mention of nudity and allusion to sex.
Summary: AU. Aegon, the Storm King Argilac and two Dornish prices are currently dealing with potential war in the east.
The sun was slowly rising and a yellowish hue was settling on the square brick towers that spread throughout the city of Pentos. A chilly summer breeze was blowing from the coast towards the terrace that covered the entire western side of the palace, Aegon was leaning on the baluster, his long hair tied in a messy bun on the back of his head. It was chillier than he expected for a summer morning, and being in nothing but his short linen breeches surely did not help, so he finally opted to wear the short tunic he had placed on the handrail.
The city below him was awakening, but like himself the port never really got to sleep. Not far he heard the distinct sound of Balerion’s yawn. The huge dragon chose the palace’s garden to rest, in truth it was the only place big enough for him. A few moments later his horned head poked out from under the terrace, Balerion stared at his rider for a moment: in his eyes Aegon could read a silent admonishment towards the Targaryen’s lack of rest.
<<That is the largest beast I’ve ever seen>> Spoke a male voice somewhere behind him, his thick Dornish accent indistinguishable. Balerion hissed and quickly turned his head towards the direction the voice came from <<He doesn’t like being called a beast>> explained Aegon in an annoyed tone, his gaze not leaving the dragon. Balerion lowered his head and slowly moved closer to the Dornish prince who was walking in their direction. The dragon never liked strangers, and didn’t trust them so close to his young rider. <<Then I apologize>> Said Oberyn, fascinated by the creature in front of him. <<I can now see why Pentos and Tyrosh were eager to have you by their side>> Concluded the Prince <<when this war will be fought>>.
<<Pentos is a city of merchants.>> Replied the young Targaryen, his peaceful quiet morning now ruined, <<war is not good for trade, they will sue for peace>>. Oberyn suffocated a laugh, <<Volantis will not bow>> said the Prince, he had been in many battles and wars and he had to learn to read his enemies faster than they could him. Oberyn was sure that sooner rather than later a battle will be fought.
<<Then they will burn>> Concluded Aegon, looking at the dornish straight in the eyes. He hoped the short response was enough to signal his will to end the conversation right then and there, for since his arrival at the pentoshi prince’s palace he did not have a moment to himself. He was made to entertain this noble or the other, he had been dragged all over the city to meet merchants, wealthy men or supposed descendents of Valyria. He was tired of all of them, of their feast and their false promises, and mostly of their talking. The Gods knew he was tired of hearing people talking.
He turned to Balerion, who was still studying Oberyn, deciding if it was safe to leave his young rider alone with the stranger, <<Jikagon, Balerion.>>* Aegon said, <<nyke ȳgha kesīr>>* he knew well that Balerion would be hungry by now. The dragon waited a moment longer, then took to the skies to hunt for his breakfast.
*Go, Balerion. I am safe here.
Whatever the outcome of the peace negotiation between the free cities, if it was to be war or not, Aegon hoped it would be quick, he was not happy to be there, he did not want to be in Pentos. The young dragonlord longed for a rocky island, for the distant smell of smoke, for Visenya’s scolding, little Rhaenys’s laughter and mother’s kind and wise words. Yet as lord of Dragonstone he was forced to attempt to broker a peace between the free cities that were once part of his ancestor’s empire. <It is our duty as the last scion of Valyria, to keep the peace among the lands of the freehold> Said his mother some moons ago, when the first messenger came from Tyrosh. They thought this was going to be quick: fly Balerion east, scare the volanteene into giving up their belligerent way and fly back home. This task however now apparently required also being a buffer between a warmongering Stormalder king and pestering Dornish royalty. And Aegon has never been a good diplomat.
<<The magisters and prince of Pentos require our presence at once>> The sweet voice of Deria announces her arrival, nothing but Aegon’s bed sheets covering her form. He turned around immediately upon hearing her, his gaze now traveling from her figure and her uncle, still by Aegon’s side. She made a show of looking surprised and pretended to be embarrassed for the situation, all the while doing nothing to hide the love bites and the marks he had left all over her neck and collarbone ours before. <<Uncle, I did not expect to see you awake at this early hour>> mewled the Princess, a knowing smirk on her face, while moving towards the pair. Aegon was not afraid of Oberyn’s reaction to this revelation for the Rhonysh have never been prude people, unlike their westerner neighbors, yet he couldn’t help but feel that they made it their mission to annoy him. A surprised humming sound left the older Prince’s mouth, he now turned to look ad Aegon, his right brow risen in a knowing look <<Vipers riding dragons, I could have not imagined it>> joked the prince, echoing the Deria’s words from the night before, <<oh I assure you uncle>> said the woman not hiding the satisfaction from her voice <<there wasn’t much riding on my part>> laughed her gripping the sheets covering her nakedness tightly. <<If my lords excuse me, I must go, have a bath and get presentable for our gracious hosts. We are to attend a council meeting with them.>> With these last words Deria disappeared from the terrace.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
<<We have larger numbers, better trained soldiers, and more importantly the greatest dragon in the world on our side>> Argued one of the magisters, his voice boomed in the hall they were all gathered, <<the Volanteenes would be mad in pursuing their war against our combined forces>> continued the man standing at one end of the great table at the center of the room where all of the magisters were sitting. The pentoshi had always pushed for peace, -in fear of retaliation- Aegon thought. He was watching the scene from his high chair on the back of the room -should it come to war they fear Volantis’s future revenge. At the very least they understand that they cannot always count on the support of others to defend themself.-
They had been locked for at least two hours now in the main room where the Magisters and the elected Prince of Pentos ruled the city. It was a square chamber on top of the highest tower, with large windows overlooking the city and, most importantly, the port. At the center was a large wooden table, filled with papers, tomes and now a big map of the east. Each of the magisters had a seat each different from the other -to identify their family’s trade and name- Aegon remembered being thought. At the eastern edge of the room, overlooking the magisters and the port beyond them, was the raised platform where the elected Prince of Pentos was traditionally seated. Aegon had been given a place of honor: a high chair carved with shapes of dragon and flames, higher even than the seat of the Prince. It was an ancient thing of blackened wood, gilded and with precious stones placed here and there. A relic of the freehold, older than they could remember -is it older than Balerion?- Aegon found himself wondering while examining the thing, the throne he was sitting belonged to a Dragonlord whose name he could not remember, -Visenya would, she always does- it came from a time when above each free city’s elected government stood their assigned dragonlord, to ensure the Freehold’s interests.
-They are making a show of honoring me, sitting me on a throne above even the Prince- he reasoned with himself looking at bejeweled man on his right, Aegon was well aware that he was receiving such treatments and honors only because of the huge dragon now soaring overhead, certainly not out of love for his person or family. -They need me not the army camped outside the walls.- He realized, the Stormlanders, the Dornish and the sellswords now gathering in the camp outside the walls were indeed an advantage, a precaution in case the last Dragonlords refused the call, for their numbers were greater than any host Volantis could have mustered. But there wasn’t an army in the world who could resist dragonfire. That’s why he was given a throne, while the Stormking, the Dornish Princess and her uncle laid on armchairs below him. If they weren’t interested in the discussions between the magister about how war would be disastrous for spice trade, they all didn’t show it. At the very least they made a show of looking interested, while Aegon laid sprawled on his chair with his face in his right hand, the elbow on the chair’s arm and his legs crossed. The precise image of a lord holding court. -Mother would skin me if she saw- Laughed the young man to himself.
The discussion went on for two more hours, the magisters were now divided on the terms to offer to Volantis, at that point even the westerner rulers were beginning to be bored. <<Let's get this over with>> The strong voice of King Argilac brought all of the magisters to silence, no one could deny that his presence was commanding, <<we must find a neutral ground, move our hosts there and meet the volanteene. There will be no need for discussion then: they will either yield or be conquered>> the Storm King has always been a man of action, not words. He had no interest in endless councils or talks about trading routes, he wanted glory. Aegon decided that he liked him more than the fat magisters now staring at him. <<I never thought to find myself to utter this words>> Echoed the voice of Oberyn Martell of Dorne, brother of the heir to the throne of the southernmost kingdom of Westeros, <<but King Argilac is right.>> he looked to Princess Deria, her brother’s heir, after saying his piece. She nodded her support, so now Aegon had to straighten himself, for everyone was slowly turning their gaze in his direction, to himself and the Prince of Pentos.
<<We shall find a neutral ground then. Somewhere that belongs to neither city, to ensure our good will>> Said the prince, repeating Argilac’s words. He sounded uneasy, scared, and Aegon didn’t blame him -should we go to war they might sacrifice him- thought the young men remembering the ways of the pentoshi, -they might do it even to ensure a prosperous peace negotiation- concluded the valyrian. He decided that he was certainly happy not to be born a noble of Pentos.
<<It is settled then>> Resonated the voice of Argilac, eager to leave that prison, <<where must we move our men?>> There were many lands between Pentos and Volantis, an entire world, yet they must choose carefully: they had to find a place that gave them advantage to their enemy.
<<Gohyan Drohe>> Said Aegon, as the two Rhonysh Princes immediately turned in his direction. For a moment he stopped to think if it was a wise decision to suggest that place, if it might cost them the support of Dorne. Yet it was undeniable that it would send a precise message to the Volanteene. <<I do not wish to offend our Dornish guests with this suggestion but it would send a message to our foes>> Explained Aegon, locking his gaze in the Princess’s dark orbs, she was smiling at him. <<What kind of message?>> Asked the Storm King now standing to face Aegon in his chair. <<When dragons fly to war everything burns>> The young man turned his gaze towards the old King, looking him in the eyes as he spoke. In truth he has never seen real battle, nor as he ever ordered Balerion to incinerate an entire army, but he knew all too well the power he wielded. He remembers being told of the thousands of wars his people were a part of entire empires reduced to smelting ruins by dragons not even half Balerion’s size. Of the arbor of Volantys whose water boiled the day the Rhoynar were at last defeated by his ancestors, moments before Nymeria sailed west. Argilac, much like the rest of the room, grew quiet in realization of what that phrase ment, he too was certainly taught the histories of Old Valyria.

This black and silver doublet was first worn by Prince Frederick in the fifth episode of the second season of Magnificent Century. It is seen again twice in the third season, first on the Venetian ambassador in the thirtieth episode and then on Tommaso Conterini in the thirty-fourth episode. The doublet also makes further appearances on Nurbanu's fiancé Enzo in the first episode and on John Sigismund Szapolyai in the thirty-sixth and final episode of the fourth season.
Mehmed The Conqueror used the doublet on the Hungarian ambassador in the first episode.
