Fantasy Versus Reality 2022-01-26
Reality is too real! Except I don't even have a couch.
Just for fun. Thanks for reading.
[Two-panel borderless comic, titled "Fantasy Vs. Reality," in which a girl with a braid imagines being in a relationship. Panel 1 shows a thought cloud of the girl snuggling on a couch with her arms around a hot guy. The thought bubble leads into the second panel, which shows the girl's reality, sprawled out on the couch, alone, with snacks and a creepy sheet mask on, probably watching k-dramas on her laptop. Caption reads, "I often wish I had someone I could feel comfortable around and be myself with...but the fantasy is getting more and more far-fetched with each passing day."]

Yellow Jacket 2022-02-08
If you see someone wearing a very vintage yellow jacket walking around, it might be me! ⁣The story of how my Dad got this for me when I moved to NYC 15 years ago. ⁣ My brain wants to tell longer stories these days, but I don't have a great way to share them yet. Many ideas are too long for short comics and take more time to develop. I'm still working on a book. This is an awkward comic strip that is more a window into my creative process than a finished product.⁣ ⁣ Thanks for patiently reading along and not giving up on me.⁣ Connie on Ko-fi ⁣ [3-page comic. Page 1, 2 panels: flashback to Los Angeles, 2007. A father proudly holds up a large yellow jacket on a hanger to a younger version of the girl. The girl tries it on and looks ridiculous. Text reads, "15 years ago, my dad got me a large, second-hand, butter-yellow, puffy jacket to wear when I moved to New York City. He says, matter-of-factly, "It's so you can survive winters and not get hit by cars." Page 2: illustration of an yellow armchair, walking passed a fire hydrant on the sidewalk. Text reads, "For years, I was too embarrassed to wear it because it made me look like a piece of yellow upholstered furniture." Page 3: girl with a bun, wearing an overwhelming, butter-yellow jacket because it was given to her by her father and is a reminder of where she comes from. Text reads, "I recently took it out of storage and started wearing it again because, if my dad taught me anything, it's "WHO CARES what anybody else thinks?!"]⁣

Sorry I haven't been posting new comics. Someone important to me died and it has left a hole in my heart. Taking time to grieve and remember. ⁣ ⁣ After drawing this diary comic, a friend shared with me that cardinals are associated with cherished memories of loved ones we have lost who will never be forgotten.⁣
Thanks for reading.  ⁣ [4-panel diary comic of a girl with a bun leaning against a tree, grieving the loss of a friend. "I lost a dear friend...and it hurts a lot." Panel 2 is a rough sketch of a Central Park path under a crescent moon with a cityscape in the background, drawn from memory. Text reads: "Time is so short." Panel 2 shows a cardinal bird sitting on a branch. Text reads: "Let me love and cherish every moment." Panel 4 zooms back in to the girl leaning against a tree: "It's all that matters."]⁣ ⁣

My Cynical Valentine 2022-02-14
In the spirit of disclosure, happy Valentine’s :)⁣
Connie on Ko-fi ⁣ [3-panel comic of a girl with a braid, being cynical to hide her idealism. In panel 1, Elephant says, "Happy Valentine's Day." Girl, not stopping her stride, scoffs, "BAH! Love means nothing to me!" Panel 2 is a beat, girl walks away. In panel 3, still poker faced, the girl's unspoken thought bubble reads, "Love means everything to me." Original webcomic strip by Connie Sun, cartoonconnie, 2022.]⁣ ⁣

Happier Comics
I draw what I see -- sometimes happy, sometimes sad.
Thanks for reading and supporting <3
[Two-panel comic of a girl with a bun being asked, "Why can't you draw happier comics?" Response: she wordlessly points at a graphic of the world in flames. "Exhibit A."]

Happy new year, Elephant and all⁣ ⁣ May you find that you have done enough, whatever you have done :) ⁣ Thank you for following along the journey and reading my cartoons. ⁣
Connie on Ko-fi ⁣ [4-panel comic of a girl with a braid, talking to an elephant. In panel 1, she says, "I didn't do enough this year." In panel 2, she continues: "And yet, it feels like I did all I could." Elephant pauses briefly to listen. Panel 3 is borderless and Elephant says knowingly, while walking off the panel, "What about all those k-dramas you binge-watched? That's something." In panel 4, girl bristles with a touch of attitude at being called out: "Oh right. thanks." Off-camera, Elephant says, "anytime."]⁣

Turnip Cake Fail 2022-01-31
Turnip cake fail, mushroom lasagna win ;)
New autobio comic! ⁣ I celebrated Lunar New Year by trying to learn how to make a dish I haven't had since childhood. It didn't exactly turn out how I wanted, but it's salvageable as its own thing.⁣ ⁣ The quintessential Asian American experience: things don't go as planned, but you make do 😂 ⁣
Happy Year of the Tiger! Thanks for reading.
[3-panel autobio comic of a girl with a bun attempting to make a traditional dish from her childhood for the first time. Panel 1 is full of the ingredients that make up the dish, like daikon radish, rice flour, and shiitake mushroom. She's wearing an apron and is "so excited" to make the dish for the first time, which is a "childhood food memory." An arrow pointing at the girl indicates that she "studied recipes online for a week." In panel 2, it's "hours later" and she is holding a knife, looking at a flipped casserole. Caption reads, "Classic mistake: too much liquid in the batter" and that it's "too soft to slice neatly and sear." In panel 3, she's fixed herself a plate and sits down to partake: "Oh well. Still tasty." Text reads: "Turnip rice cake FAIL; mushroom lasagna WIN."]

Some days are extra hard and this is all you can do. It's something. ⁣ ⁣ Creative Notes #24 from my original webcomic series on Tinyview. New comics every Wednesday! ⁣ Thanks for liking and following - it helps! https://tinyview.com/connie⁣ ⁣ [6-panel comic about having a hard time finding the motivation to draw. In panel 1, a girl with a bun stares at a blank piece of paper taped to a wall. In panel 2, she doodles on the wall, everywhere but on the paper itself. Panel 3 shows white clouds. Panel 4 shows the girl sitting on a white cloud with a blank expression on her face. In panel 5, she's staring at a blank piece of paper again, with some empty thought clouds behind her. The final panel shows her drawing a "single dot of emotion". Text reads: "Sometimes the only way through a creative block is to go around it, to doodle in the margins and go somewhere wordless that can't be expressed verbally. Just draw anything and start there."] ⁣

New Year Snowball 2021-12-30
I'm not starting anew -⁣ as much as I'm rolling a giant snowball ⁣of unfinished business into another year.⁣ ⁣ Thanks for all your support and encouragement this year. It means a lot that you continue to follow my comics through pandemic life changes and growing pains. I continue to plow ahead with my writing project and process the journey, cartoon by cartoon. Hopefully, I'll see some progress in 2022.⁣ ⁣ Wishing you safe and well and happy in the months ahead.⁣
Connie on Ko-fi ⁣ [Single-panel comic of a girl with a bun, strenuously rolling a giant, messy snowball across a winter landscape, toward an arrow sign pointing to 2022. Rolled snowball contains a live squawking chicken and a bewildered dog. Caption reads, "I'm not starting anew as much as I'm rolling a giant snowball of unfinished business into another year." Titled "New Year Snowball."]⁣

On My Way
New diary comic about finding self-affirmation in less than ideal conditions.
George Takei on the long history of anti-Asian hate in the US (link) Daniel Dae Kim speaking to Congress (link) Karen Chee on the Atlanta shootings (link)
I have to learn the importance of loving myself no matter what external messages I get from my environment.
Sandra Oh famously said, "It's an honor to be Asian."
Yes, and now more than ever. Glad to know we are not alone.

Very Shout-y Humans 2021-12-29
Taking breaks from social media in tense times. ⁣ ⁣ Thanks for reading and wishing you safe.⁣ ⁣ [Two-panel webcomic of an elephant and a girl with a braid, standing in a corner, covering her ears. In panel 1, Elephant asks, "What are you doing?" In panel 2, girl looks up, ears still covered, and answers "Social media detox." After a beat, she adds, "Humans can be very shout-y."]⁣

Elephant Experience 2022-01-27
That feeling when the prerequisite for the job you want is prior experience :')
Thanks for following! Connie on Ko-fi
[Two-panel borderless comic of a girl with a bun, lounging on a couch, as an elephant casually walks by. In panel 1, she wonders out loud, "How does anybody get good at dating?" Elephant answers matter-of-factly, "Same as everything...you need experience." In panel 2, she looks up at the ceiling in frustration and says, "Damn it all. Life is so unfair." Elephant is already halfway off-frame and says, "Take it or leave it."]

"Very Asian" Food Therapy 2022-01-20
When society breaks my heart, I subconsciously crave the comfort foods that connect me to my history and heritage. The older I get, the more the foods my grandparents fed me as a child mean to me.
It's a rough time in the world. Hope you are finding ways to cope and comfort where you can.
Thanks for reading.
[4-panel comic of a frayed-looking woman with a braid, remembering foods she ate as a child. Panel 2 is a flashback of a young girl with bowl-cut hair, peeking at a table full of Chinese foods, like dumplings, turnip cake, rice bowls, and steamed bao. In panel 3, she opens wide for a dumpling being fed to her with chopsticks. Back to present day in panel 4. Woman with a braid sits in front of a laptop. The text of the comic reads, "When society breaks my heart, I subconsciously crave comfort foods...that my family made for me as a kid...and it soothes a part of me...to watch the hell out of Asian cooking channels on YouTube."]
